Avian defensive behavior against host-seeking arthropods influencestransmission of vector-borne pathogens by affecting mosquitobiting rate, either by preventing vector–host contactor by increasing the rate of multiple host feeding. We exposedhouse sparrows (Passer domesticus L.) and chickens (Gallus gallusdomesticus L.) to Culex pipiens pipiens L. overnight in a largeobservation cage and measured avian defensive behavior ratesand mosquito blood-feeding success. Both bird species exhibiteda range of defensive behaviors, 90% of which were foot stomps, head movements, and wing shakes. Total behavior rates increasedproportionately with mosquito density in both species, increasedafter the first hour of mosquito exposure, and decreased asindividual birds were exposed to mosquitoes multiple times.Mosquito blood-feeding success on house sparrows was high overall(82 ± 5%) and independent of behavior rates. Blood-feedingsuccess on chicks was lower (58 ± 5%) and negativelycorrelated with defensive behavior rate after the first hourof mosquito exposure. Results revealed a higher percentage ofpartial blood meals on chicks (18 ± 3% of all blood mealson chicks) than on house sparrows (4.9 ± 3%). Birds ofboth species ate an average of 9.4 ± 1.2% of mosquitoes, and this percentage was positively correlated with defensivebehavior. High mosquito feeding success on house sparrows supportsits role as a potential amplifying host of West Nile virus.  相似文献

Wild-caught, immature black-bellied whistling ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) were inoculated with eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), St. Louis encephalitis (SLE), or western equine encephalitis (WEE) virus. Susceptibility, duration and titer of viremia, and antibody response to these arboviruses were determined. Birds from all inoculated groups became viremic. Higher virus titers occurred in the EEE group but overall mean titers were not significantly different among experimental groups. All birds inoculated with EEE and SLE viruses developed antibodies, and six of seven ducks receiving WEE virus were seropositive. All seropositive ducks had antibodies for at least 59 days, when the study was terminated. The EEE group had significantly more seropositive ducks during more days than the WEE and SLE groups. Geometric mean antibody titers were significantly smaller in the WEE group when compared to the EEE and SLE groups. Control ducks did not develop viremia or antibodies. Gross and histopathologic lesions compatible with viral encephalitis were absent in all of nine ducks necropsied. Black-bellied whistling ducks can develop low and short-term levels of viremia sufficient to infect mosquitoes, but probably cannot contribute significantly to the transmission of EEE and SLE. They may serve as good indicators of virus activity.  相似文献

An epidemic of conjunctivitis among house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) bacterial infections was first described in 1994. The disease exhibits high primary host specificity, but has been isolated from a limited number of secondary avian hosts at various times and locations. We used records from the House Finch Disease Survey, a continent-wide, volunteer monitoring project, to document the host range of conjunctivitis in birds at feeding stations and to investigate how disease in house finches might influence the spread of conjunctivitis to other hosts. Between 1994 and 1998, participants recorded 675 cases of conjunctivitis in 31 species other than house finches in eastern North America. Seventy five % of these cases were observed among three species: American goldfinches (Carduelis tristis), purple finches (Carpodacus purpureus) and house sparrows (Passer domesticus). The proportion of sites with diseased wintering populations of the three species increased over the 4 yr study and coincided with range expansion of conjunctivitis in house finches. Sites with diseased house finches present were significantly more likely to report conjunctivitis in each of the three species during the same month. These observations are most consistent with transmission of an infectious agent (presumably MG) from house finches to these secondary hosts via spillover of localized epidemics, rather than sustained interspecific transmission.  相似文献

Western equine encephalitis in avian populations in North Dakota, 1975   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The involvement of wild birds in western equine encephalitis (WEE) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus activity in the Red River valley area of North Dakota (USA) during a WEE epidemic was investigated in August 1975. Free-ranging birds were captured with mist nets and nestlings by hand. Virologic and serologic results indicated that a similar rate of WEE virus activity occurred throughout Richland County and between permanent and summer resident birds. The rate of SLE virus activity in the birds of Richland County was lower than for WEE virus, but the SLE antibody prevalence was greater in rural areas than within urban locations. Seven of the nine WEE virus isolations were from nestling birds of four different species; the remaining two from adults of two different species. Overall prevalence of neutralizing (N) antibody against WEE virus was 5% in nestling and 14% in adult birds but was the opposite for N antibody against SLE virus, 17% in nestling and 5% in adult birds. Differences between the two viruses in the presence and persistence of maternal N antibody or differential mortality in nestling birds may have caused the disparity in antibody prevalences.  相似文献

Since 1994 an epidemic of mycoplasmal conjunctivitis has spread throughout the eastern house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) population leading to a significant decline in this population. The infection has not yet been reported from house finch populations west of the Great Plains. We hypothesized that the western population, like the eastern population, is susceptible to infection, and we tested this hypothesis by experimentally infecting house finches from Missoula, Montana (USA) with the house finch strain of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG). We compared the response of finches from Montana infected with MG to that of finches from Auburn, Alabama (USA) (October 1999-February 2000). Fifteen house finches from Montana were shipped to Auburn and quarantined for 6 wk at the Auburn University aviary. All birds were negative for MG antibodies when tested by serum plate agglutination assay and MG could not be detected in any bird by polymerase chain reaction. We tested two methods of inoculation, ocular inoculation and contact exposure to an infected finch. Seven house finches from Montana and four house finches from Alabama were infected by bilateral ocular inoculation with 20 microliters of a culture containing 1 x 10(6) color changing units of the house finch strain of MG. The remaining eight house finches from Montana were co-housed with a house finch from Alabama exhibiting mycoplasmal conjunctivitis. After exposure to the pathogen, all house finches became infected, regardless of origin or method of exposure, and all developed conjunctivitis. All birds seroconverted, and evidence of infection could be detected in every bird at some point during the course of disease. Our results suggest that house finches from the western United States are highly susceptible to infection with the house finch strain of MG.  相似文献

West Nile virus (WNV) could be introduced into Germany via migratory birds originating from Africa or southern Europe and subsequently transmitted to indigenous birds, humans, or horses by mosquitoes. Neither the virus itself nor antibodies against WNV have yet to be found in mosquitoes and horses, whereas antibodies have been detected in migrating birds and in humans that were in close contact with birds. At present, the West Nile virus itself has yet to be detected in Germany. This investigation was conducted primarily in major bird breeding, resting, and roosting habitats (hotspots) in the Upper Rhine Valley. Adult mosquitoes were trapped using CO2‐baited Encephalitis Vector Surveillance (EVS)‐traps and were tested for WNV by the VecTest WNV Antigen Assay. In 2007 and 2008, a total of 11,073 host‐seeking adult female mosquitoes (13 species) were tested, and all tests were negative for WNV. Statistical calculations could be performed only where sufficient numbers of mosquitoes were trapped. For these sites, WNV infection among mosquitoes could be ruled out with 80% certainty. For the evaluation of the WNV situation in Germany, the results of this investigation are a further indication that the virus has not yet arrived.  相似文献

Saskatchewan, in the summer of 1962, was the scene of an extensive outbreak of western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) in horses. The results of mosquito survey work showed Culiseta inornata and Culex tarsalis respectively to be the two most abundant mosquito species during midsummer. These species are those reported to be most commonly associated with outbreaks of WEE. Five hundred and sixty-four pools of mosquitoes were examined for the presence of WEE virus. Six pools, three of C. tarsalis and one each of C. inornata, Aedes flavescens and Aedes dorsalis, yielded WEE virus. Positive mosquitoes were from St. Walburg (C. inornata), Saskatoon (C. tarsalis - two, A. dorsalis - one), Outlook (C. tarsalis) and Kisbey (A. flavescens).  相似文献

Adult house sparrows (Passer domesticus) were captured and experimentally inoculated with St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus to produce high concentrations of circulating antiviral antibody. Nestlings, 5-7 and 14-16 days of age, from SLE immune adult females and challenged with SLE virus, exhibited viremic enhancement by producing viremias of greater duration and magnitude than did controls. Nestlings possessing maternal antibody and challenged with SLE virus between 8 and 13 days of age did not produce viremias differing significantly from controls in magnitude, duration, or temporal appearance. Experimental nestling sparrows possessed detectable amounts of maternally derived passive antibody to SLE virus prior to challenge with this virus. Passive geometric mean antibody titers ranged from a high of 1:34.5 in nestlings tested 5-7 days posthatching, to a low of 1:11.2 in 14-16-day-old birds. Results presented imply that enhancement of SLE virus infections could lead to increased viral amplification and dissemination rates during natural disease cycles.  相似文献

Pathogen-induced host phenotypic changes are widespread phenomena that can dramatically influence host–vector interactions. Enhanced vector attraction to infected hosts has been reported in a variety of host–pathogen systems, and has given rise to the parasite manipulation hypothesis whereby pathogens may adaptively modify host phenotypes to increase transmission from host to host. However, host phenotypic changes do not always favour the transmission of pathogens, as random host choice, reduced host attractiveness and even host avoidance after infection have also been reported. Thus, the effects of hosts’ parasitic infections on vector feeding behaviour and on the likelihood of parasite transmission remain unclear. Here, we experimentally tested how host infection status and infection intensity with avian Plasmodium affect mosquito feeding patterns in house sparrows (Passer domesticus). In separate experiments, mosquitoes were allowed to bite pairs containing (i) one infected and one uninfected bird and (ii) two infected birds, one of which treated with the antimalarial drug, primaquine. We found that mosquitoes fed randomly when exposed to both infected and uninfected birds. However, when mosquitoes were exposed only to infected individuals, they preferred to bite the non-treated birds. These results suggest that the malarial parasite load rather than the infection itself plays a key role in mosquito attraction. Our findings partially support the parasite manipulation hypothesis, which probably operates via a reduction in defensive behaviour, and highlights the importance of considering parasite load in studies on host–vector–pathogen interactions.  相似文献

The house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) of eastern North America was introduced onto Long Island, New York, around 1940. The source is presumed to be southern California, where ca. 80% of individuals are completely sedentary. The eastern population has become migratory: by the early 1960s, 36% of eastern house finches were performing migratory movements (more than 80 km from their banding site) and that proportion has fluctuated between 28% and 54% in succeeding years. The movements of birds banded during the breeding season and recovered in winter were strongly orientated toward the south-west, and the same pattern was evident in the earliest recoveries (1958 to 1966); recoveries of birds banded during winter and recovered in the breeding season were orientated toward the north-east. The average distance of migration has continued to increase logarithmically. Areas colonized later, as the range expanded, were characterized by initial long migration distances and high proportions of migrants, suggesting that these traits have evolved in the eastern population. Eastern house finches are partial migrants: not all individuals migrate, and birds that migrate some winters remain in breeding areas in others. Younger birds exhibit a stronger tendency to migrate. A very few western (including southern California) house finches moved long distances, but they did so in directions consistent with seasonal migration, indicating that the machinery subserving migratory behaviour pre-existed in the parent population.  相似文献

We assessed experimentally if the main granivorous bird species that feed on the ground in the central Monte desert are able to detect and consume seeds buried in the soil or trapped within litter. Understanding seed vulnerability to birds allows 1) a better understanding of how seed abundance translates into seed availability, a necessary step to assess seed limitation scenarios, and 2) whether birds alter the distribution of soil seeds through their consumption. Rufous‐collared sparrows found and consumed high proportions of buried seeds, though less seeds were eaten at increasing depths. In contrast, many‐colored chaco‐finches, common diuca‐finches and cinnamon warbling‐finches did not find buried seeds. All bird species fed on every substrate offered but, as a whole, birds reduced by 50% their seed consumption in Prosopis litter, and by 30% in Larrea litter, compared to consumption in bare soil. This effect was less notable for rufous‐collared sparrows, whose ‘double scratch’ foraging method would contribute to its great diet breath and abundance in the Monte desert. As birds do not reach a fraction of seeds buried and trapped by litter, seeds readily available for them may be scarcer than previously estimated through soil seed bank studies. Furthermore, since the four bird species detect and consume seeds from littered microhabitats, seed consumption by them surely affects the seasonal dynamics of the soil seed bank in all microhabitat types of the Monte desert.  相似文献

The rapid spread of the bacterial disease, Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), throughout the introduced range of house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) in eastern North America, compared to its slower spread through the native western range, has puzzled researchers and highlights the need to understand the relative differences in health state of finches from both populations. We conducted a light-microscope survey of hemoparasites in populations of finches from Arizona (within the western range) and from Alabama (within the eastern range), and compared our estimates of prevalence to published reports from house finches sampled in both ranges. Of the 33 Arizona birds examined, we recorded hematozoan infections in 16 (48.5%) individuals, compared to 1 infected Alabama bird out of 30 birds examined (3.3%). Based on independent surveys of seven western North American and five eastern North American populations of house finches the average prevalence of blood parasites in western populations is 38.8% (±17.9 SD), while the average prevalence within the eastern range is only 5.9% (±6.1 SD). The average rate of infection among all songbirds sampled in the east is 34.2% (±4.8 SD). Thus, our surveys of wild birds as well as previously published observations point to eastern house finches having a much lower prevalence of blood parasite infections than their western counterparts. Combined with the fact that eastern finches also tend to have lower rates of avian pox infections than do western birds (based on a literature review), these observations suggest that eastern birds have either strong resistance to these infections or high susceptibility and associated mortality.  相似文献

Spontaneous, continuous release of morphologically normal spermatozoa occurs in males of species of passerine (order Passeriformes) birds that were examined. It was demonstrated and studied quantitatively in temporarily captive and isolated house sparrows and house finches by means of repetitive cloacal lavages and extraction of excreta. It is suggested that this phenomenon could be exploited to facilitate comparative and quantitative evaluations of release of spermatozoa in relation to diverse environmental, physiological, and social factors.  相似文献

West Nile disease, caused by the West Nile virus (WNV), is a mosquito-borne zoonotic disease affecting humans and horses that involves wild birds as amplifying hosts. The mechanisms of WNV transmission remain unclear in Europe where the occurrence of outbreaks has dramatically increased in recent years. We used a dataset on the competence, distribution, abundance, diversity and dispersal of wild bird hosts and mosquito vectors to test alternative hypotheses concerning the transmission of WNV in Southern France. We modelled the successive processes of introduction, amplification, dispersal and spillover of WNV to incidental hosts based on host–vector contact rates on various land cover types and over four seasons. We evaluated the relative importance of the mechanisms tested using two independent serological datasets of WNV antibodies collected in wild birds and horses. We found that the same transmission processes (seasonal virus introduction by migratory birds, Culex modestus mosquitoes as amplifying vectors, heterogeneity in avian host competence, absence of ‘dilution effect’) best explain the spatial variations in WNV seroprevalence in the two serological datasets. Our results provide new insights on the pathways of WNV introduction, amplification and spillover and the contribution of bird and mosquito species to WNV transmission in Southern France.  相似文献

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV, Flavivirus, Flaviviridae) is an emerging mosquito-borne pathogen in South America, with human SLEV encephalitis cases reported in Argentina and Brazil. Genotype III strains of SLEV were isolated from Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes in Cordoba, Argentina in 2005, during the largest SLEV outbreak ever reported in South America. The present study tested the hypothesis that the recent, epidemic SLEV strain exhibits greater virulence in birds as compared with a non-epidemic genotype III strain isolated from mosquitoes in Santa Fe Province 27 years earlier. The observed differences in infection parameters between adult House sparrows (Passer domesticus) that were needle-inoculated with either the epidemic or historic SLEV strain were not statistically significant. However, only the House sparrows that were infected with the epidemic strain achieved infectious-level viremia titers sufficient to infect Cx. spp. mosquitoes vectors. Furthermore, the vertebrate reservoir competence index values indicated an approximately 3-fold increase in amplification potential of House sparrows infected with the epidemic strain when pre-existing flavivirus-reactive antibodies were present, suggesting the possibility that antibody-dependent enhancement may increase the risk of avian-amplified transmission of SLEV in South America.  相似文献

Urban bird communities exhibit high population densities and low species diversity, yet mechanisms behind these patterns remain largely untested. We present results from experimental studies of behavioral mechanisms underlying these patterns and provide a test of foraging theory applied to urban bird communities. We measured foraging decisions at artificial food patches to assess how urban habitats differ from wildlands in predation risk, missed-opportunity cost, competition, and metabolic cost. By manipulating seed trays, we compared leftover seed (giving-up density) in urban and desert habitats in Arizona. Deserts exhibited higher predation risk than urban habitats. Only desert birds quit patches earlier when increasing the missed-opportunity cost. House finches and house sparrows coexist by trading off travel cost against foraging efficiency. In exclusion experiments, urban doves were more efficient foragers than passerines. Providing water decreased digestive costs only in the desert. At the population level, reduced predation and higher resource abundance drive the increased densities in cities. At the community level, the decline in diversity may involve exclusion of native species by highly efficient urban specialists. Competitive interactions play significant roles in structuring urban bird communities. Our results indicate the importance and potential of mechanistic approaches for future urban bird community studies.  相似文献

Ochlerotatus albifasciatus (Macquart) (Diptera: Culicidae) is the main vector of the western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) virus and potentially of other arboviruses in Argentina. Surges of adult population abundance during the rainy season are a nuisance, affecting milk and beef production. Larvae develop in short periods in shallow temporary ground pools on fresh or brackish water. Although adults seem to disperse long distances from larval habitats, little is known about their habitat preferences. This work studied factors affecting the spatial pattern of adult Oc. albifasciatus abundance. Adult mosquitoes were collected using CDC miniature light traps baited with CO2 at 28 sites located to the south of Mar Chiquita Lagoon, from November 1997 to April 1998. Each site was typified according to its predominating vegetation cover, potential breeding site occurrence, land slope and cattle density. The spatial and temporal patterns of abundance suggested that Oc. albifasciatus prefers prairies and natural grasslands subject to periodic flooding vs. woodland and farm land. A discriminant function based on the proximity to potential larval habitats, distance to woodland and land slope accurately classified 95% of the data categorized as having an average high (>500 mosquitoes) or low (<500 mosquitoes) abundance, and was validated using six sites located away from the study area. An analysis of the temporal variation of mosquito abundance highlighted the influence of the dynamics of the larval habitats on adult mosquito abundance.  相似文献

Conjunctivitis in house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus), caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), was first reported in 1994 and, since this time, has become endemic in house finch populations throughout eastern North America. Although the house finch is most commonly associated with MG-related conjunctivitis, MG has been reported from other wild bird species, and conjunctivitis (not confirmed as MG related) has been reported in over 30 species. To help define the host range of the house finch strain of MG and to better understand the effect of MG on other host species, we monitored a community of wild birds for exposure to MG and conducted experimental infections on nine avian species. For the field portion of our study, we conducted a 9-mo survey (August 2001 to April 2002) of wild avian species in a peri-urban environment on the campus of Auburn University. During this time 358 birds, representing 13 different families, were sampled. No clinical signs of mycoplasmosis were observed in any bird. Thirteen species from nine families had positive agglutination reactions for antibodies to MG, but all birds tested negative by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three mourning doves were PCR-positive for MG, but antibodies to MG were not detected. In the experimental infections, we exposed seven native avian species and two cage-bird species to MG (May 2000 to June 2002). After exposure, clinical disease was seen in all four species from the family Fringillidae and in eastern tufted titmice (Baeolophus bicolor). In addition, three other species were infected without clinical signs, suggesting that they may represent potential MG reservoirs.  相似文献
