The activity patterns of two closely related echimyid rodents (spiny rats) of the Brazilian Caatinga were studied. One species, Proechimys [Trinomys] yonenagae, is a fossorial dweller of fixed sand dunes. P. [T.] albispinus, inhabits remnants of the Atlantic rainforest areas. A third species, Trichomys apereoides, collected in granite formations in the Caatinga was also studied. The animals were kept individually in cages under controlled conditions and light-dark cycle of 12:12 h. Data were collect by Scan sampling every 2 h, over 3 days, and were analyzed by Cosinor method. All species were nocturnal. P. yonenagae showed a regular pattern of circadian activity and restricted its activity to subjective night. P. albispinus showed an intermittent pattern of activity, especially in the dark phase. T. apereoides showed a bimodal pattern with high crepuscular peaks of activity. A high level of synchrony was found in the activity among individual P. yonenagae. No sex differences were found in behavioral patterns of either P. yonenagae or P. albispinus. Since the two species of Proechimys share a common ancestor, the differences that were found stress the importance of external selection over circadian rhythmicity.  相似文献

In this work we explored the evolution of sociality in cursorial echimyids by comparing affiliation among three species of Trinomys and one species of Thrichomys. We captured specimens of Trinomys yonenagae, Trinomys albispinus minor, and Thrichomys apereoides in areas of the Brazilian semiarid Caatinga, and Trinomys iheringi denigratus in one area of Atlantic Forest. For each species, we recorded 12 intra‐sexual dyadic encounters in a neutral arena (six between males and six between females) in order to test the hypothesis that species and sex influence level of affiliation. This response variable was assessed based on an affiliation index, calculated as the proportion of the total number of affiliative behaviors to the total number of social behaviors exhibited by the dyad during each encounter. Hypothesis test was performed by means of a parametric two‐way anova . The test was able to detect significant differences only among species, not among sexes. Trinomys yonenagae was the most affiliative species, while T. apereoides and T. albispinus minor were the most agonistic ones. Trinomys iheringi denigratus showed an intermediate pattern. We suggest, based on out‐group comparison, that affiliation in Trinomys increased in the lineage containing T. iheringi denigratus and T. yonenagae and that higher affiliation in the last species can be adaptive to the life in the desert‐like habitat where it lives.  相似文献

Thrichomys apereoides is widely distributed in the Caatinga, a semi-arid region in Brazil, but is presumed to lack capabilities for water conservation. In the present study, we compared two populations of adult individuals living under different precipitation conditions (700 and 450 mm year(-1)). Animals from the less dry area were twice as heavy as those from the drier locality. Under ad libitum water regimen, there were differences between populations in relative food intake as well as in water intake and urine concentration, but not in normalized body mass water intake. Under short-term water deprivation, both populations presented similar body mass loss. Whereas individuals from the more arid locality maintained food consumption, urine volume and urine osmolality, Thrichomys from the less dry locality reduced food consumption and urine volume. The occurrence of anuria in 75% of animals from this population indicates that the limits of their ability to deal with water shortage had been reached. The morphological and physiological difference and the non-allometric similarities found between the two populations of T. apereoides fulfill the criteria for physiological adaptations to differences in annual rainfall. Our data challenge the hypothesis that the irregularity of annual rainfall in the Caatinga precludes the evolution of adaptations to this semi-arid climate.  相似文献

Abstract

An age‐associated alterations in daily and circadian changes of cytochrome P‐450‐linked monooxygenases system activity were studied using 1‐, 6‐ and 12‐months old male Wistar rats, in winter and in spring season. Cytochrome P‐450 and NADPH‐cytochrome P‐450 reductase showed 12h rhythm in all investigated age groups of animals. Cytochrome b5 and NADH‐cytochrome b5 reductase were characterized by a 12h daily rhythm in 1‐month old rats, but in older ones 24h circadian rhythm was found. There was not significant changes of the rhythm pattern in the activity of investigated MFO system ingredients in rats of different age, between spring and winter.  相似文献

Two new Pudicinae (Trichostrongylina, Heligmosomoidea, Heligmonellidae) coparasites of Proechimys longicaudatus (Caviomorph rodent) from Bolivia are described: Pudica ginsburgi n. sp. is differentiated from all the other species of the genus by the great length of the spicules and of the vestibule and by a different ratio of the length of the spicules on the length of the body. Heligmostrongylus chiarae n. sp. has very developed rays 4, strongly divergent from rays 5 as occurs in three other species, H. almeidai (Durette-Desset & Tcheprakoff, 1969), a parasite of Trichomys apereoides (= Cercomys cunicularius) from Brazil, H. squamastrongylus (Travassos, 1937), a parasite of Proechimys oris from Brazil and H. proechimysi Durette-Desset, 1970, a parasite of Proechimys semispinosus from Columbia. The specimens from Bolivia are differentiated from the three species by the division of the dorsal ray (anterior half versus posterior half) and by a different ratio of the length of the spicules on the length of the body.  相似文献

Thrichomys apereoides, a caviomorph rodent species common in a highly endemic area for Chagas disease in Brazil, may act as reservoir of the parasite. However, no information is available concerning its sibling species Thrichomys pachyurus, found in the Pantanal region, where Trypanosoma cruzi is found only in the enzootic cycle. We followed up the cross infection of these cryptic species with two isolates derived from naturally infected T. pachyurus and Thrichomys apereoides laurentius. No regional co-adaptation between Thrichomys species and the regional isolates were noticed. However, significant differences in the outcome of the infection were observed. T. a. laurentius was more resistant than T. pachyurus, as expressed by lower parasitemia and less histopathological damage. The routine biochemical markers used for laboratory rodents were unsuitable for follow up of infection in Thrichomys spp, since they did not correlate with the histopathological findings or allowed the kinetic follow-up of tissue colonization by the parasite.  相似文献

We tested intrinsic reproductive isolation between 3 taxa of the South American caviomorph rodent Thrichomys (Rodentia, Echimyidae): T. pachyurus, T. apereoides subsp. apereoides and T. apereoides subsp. laurentius. They were mated in captivity and produced viable progeny. Some F1 hybrid females were fertile, whereas all F1 males were sterile. Histological examination revealed meiotic arrest at the primary spermatocyte stage. No sperm was detected in testes or epididymes. Electron microscopic analysis of surface spread synaptonemal complexes revealed a complete failure of chromosome pairing in F1 hybrids of T. pachyurus with T. apereoides subsp. laurentius and T. apereoides subsp. apereoides. In the male hybrids between T. apereoides subsp. apereoides and T. apereoides subsp. laurentius, meiosis did not proceed beyond diplotene, although all of the chromosomes, including heteromorphic ones, paired in an orderly fashion. Backcross males with homomorphic karyotypes showed segregation in meiosis progression. This indicates that male hybrid sterility is due to genetic, but not chromosomal, incompatibility of the parental taxa.  相似文献

To understand the interaction of Trypanosoma cruzi with caviomorph rodents, which supposedly have an ancient co-evolutionary history with this parasite, experimental infection of laboratory reared Trichomys apereoides with several isolates of both genotypes of the parasite was studied. Parasitemia, pattern of hematic cells, specific humoral immune response, histopathological features and parasite clearance were appraised. T. apereoides maintained stable infections independent of the T. cruzi genotype as demonstrated by positive PCR results in analyses of several tissues after a 5 months follow-up. The acute phase was characterized by abundant and disseminated presence of amastigotes, vacuolization and/or myocytolysis. Lymphocytosis was a common feature. The chronic phase was characterized mainly by lymphomacroeosinophilic infiltrates independent of the inoculated T. cruzi isolate. T. cruzi of different genotypes did not show any tissular preference in T. apereoides.  相似文献

Development of the LLanos Orientales of Colombia, and access to underdeveloped areas in the Llanos, may create disease hazards to man and domestic animals or introduce exotic pathogens, creating reservoirs of infection for domestic animals and acting as limiting factors on the native wild species. A survey of wild animals common to the Llanos revealed a number of parasites indigenous to the area. A total total of 59 mammalian species, representing eight orders were examined. Haematozoa were represented by Trypanosoma cruzi, T. evansi and T. rangeli. Eight species of ticks were found: Amblyomma cajennense, A. auricularium, A. rotundatum, A. maculatum, A. longirostre, A. pacae, Ixodes luciae and Boophilus microplus. Four species of fleas were found: Rhopalopsyllus lugubris lugubris, R. australis tupinus, R. cacicus saevus and Polygenis klagesi samuelis. A species of Echinococcus was commonly found in Cuniculus paca. Serologic titers and/or isolations of pathogenic viral and bacterial agents generally indicated that the wildlife population had not been exposed to the diseases common to the domestic population. A low prevalence of titers to Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis was found in Cebus apella and Proechimys sp. Neutralizing antibodies to Group B viruses were found in Proechimys sp., Coendor sp. and Nectomys squamipes. Antibodies to Group C viruses were found in Proechimys sp. Serologic titers to Leptospira sejroe and L. tarassovi were found in Proechimys sp. and Didelphis marsupialis. L. tarassovi was isolated from Proechimys sp. Titers to Brucella were not found in 1964 animals. The significance of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Background: Circadian rhythms in plasma concentrations of many hormones and cytokines determine their effects on target cells. Methods: Circadian variations were studied in cortisol, melatonin, cytokines (basic fibroblast growth factor [bFGF], EGF, insulin-like growth factor-1 [IGF-1]), and a cytokine receptor (insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 [IGFBP-3]) in the plasma of 28 patients with metastatic breast cancer. All patients followed a diurnal activity pattern. Blood was drawn at 3h intervals during waking hours and once during the night, at 03:00. The plasma levels obtained by enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) or radioimmunoassay (RIA) were evaluated by population mean cosinor (using local midnight as the phase reference and by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Cortisol and melatonin showed a high-amplitude circadian rhythm and a superimposed 12h frequency. bFGF showed a circadian rhythm with an acrophase around 13:00 with a peak-to-trough interval (double amplitude) of 18.2% and a superimposed 12h frequency. EGF showed a circadian rhythm with an acrophase around 14:20, a peak-to-trough interval of 25.8%, and a superimposed 12h frequency. IGF-1 showed a high value in the morning, which is statistically different t test) from the low value at 10:00, but a regular circadian or ultradian rhythm was not recognizable as a group phenomenon. IGFBP-3 showed a low-amplitude (peak-to-trough difference 8.4%) circadian rhythm with the acrophase around 11:00 and low values during the night. Conclusions: (1) Circadian periodicity is maintained in hospitalized patients with metastatic breast cancer. (2) Ultradian (12h) variations were superimposed on the circadian rhythms of the hormones and several of the cytokines measured. (3) Studies of hormones and cytokines in cancer patients have to take their biologic rhythms into consideration. (4) The circadian periodicity of tumor growth stimulating or restraining factors raises questions about circadian and/ or ultradian variations in the pathophysiology of breast cancer. This study investigated whether changes in illumination modify perception of day and night conditions in a diurnal species, the Indian weaver bird. Birds were initially subjected to a 12-h light:12-h dark regime (12L:12D; L=20 lux, D =0.5 lux). After every 2 wks, the combinations of light illumination in L and D phases were changed as follows: 20:2 lux, 20:5 lux, 20:10 lux, 20:20 lux, 20:100 lux, and 20:200 lux. Finally, birds were released into dim constant light (0.5 lux) for 2 wks to determine the phase and period of the circadian activity rhythm. They were also laparotomized at periodic intervals to examine the effects of the light regimes on the seasonal testicular cycle. All individuals showed a consistently similar response. As evident by the activity pattern under these light regimes, both in total activity during contrasting light phases and during the 2?h in the beginning and end of first light phase, birds interpreted the period of higher light intensity as day, and the period of lower intensity as the night. During the period of similar light intensity, i.e., under LL, birds free-ran with a circadian period ( ~ 24 h). In bright LL (20 lux), the activity rhythm was less distinct, but periodogram analysis revealed the circadian period for the group as 24.46 (+/-) 0.41 h (mean???SE). However, in dim LL at the end of the experiment, all birds exhibited a circadian pattern with average period of 25.52 (+/-) 0.70 h. All birds also showed testicular growth and regression during the 16-wks study. It is suggested that weaver birds interpret day and night subjectively based on both the light intensity and contrast between illuminations during two phases over the 24 h.  相似文献

Behavioral rhythms of the Nile tilapia were investigated to better characterize its circadian system. To do so, the locomotor activity patterns of both male and female tilapia reared under a 12:12 h light-dark (LD) cycle were studied, as well as in males the existence of endogenous rhythmicity under free-running conditions (DD and 45 min LD pulses). When exposed to an LD cycle, the daily pattern of activity differed between individuals: some fish were diurnal, some nocturnal, and a few displayed an arrhythmic pattern. This variability would be typical of the plastic circadian system of fish. Moreover, reproductive events clearly affected the behavioral rhythms of female tilapia, a mouth-brooder teleost species. Under DD, 50% (6 of 12) of male fish showed circadian rhythms with an average period (τ) of 24.1±0.2 h, whereas under the 45 min LD pulses, 58% (7 of 12) of the fish exhibited free-running activity rhythms with an average τ of 23.9±0.5 h. However, interestingly in this case, activity was always confined to the dark phase. Furthermore, when the LD cycle was reversed, a third of the fish showed gradual resynchronization to the new phase, taking 7–10 days to be completely re-entrained. Taken together, these results suggest the existence of an endogenous circadian oscillator that controls the expression of locomotor activity rhythms in the Nile tilapia, although its anatomical localization remains unknown.  相似文献

The expression of biological rhythms was investigated in five populations of three different species of talitrid amphipods from various habitats in the Maremma Regional Park, Grosseto, Italy: Talitrus saltator (from a sandy beach and a canal), Orchestia montagui (form a Posidonia banquette), and O. gammarellus (from a cave entrance and a river bank). Locomotor activity rhythms were recorded in individual animals over 21 days in constant dark at a temperature of 18 degrees +/-1 degrees C. A high variability in rhythm expression was evident, not only among species and populations but also within populations and the activity pattern of individuals. Activity rhythms of T. saltator and O. montagui were similar, with a good definition and precise circadian periodicity, whereas O. gammarellus showed a high variability and low definition of the circadian rhythm. Significant differences were also observed between two populations of O. gammarellus and T. saltator from different habitats. Within the O. gammarellus species, a significantly higher percentage of active animals (p<0.001) was observed in the cave than the river-bank population; within T. saltator, a significantly lower percentage of active animals (p<0.01) and higher percentage of periodic animals (p<0.05) was found in the canal than the sandy beach population. With reference to environmental stability and variability, the differences observed are explained as a need for plasticity to adapt to environmental changes.  相似文献

Although it is well established that human adipose tissue (AT) shows circadian rhythmicity, published studies have been discussed as if tissues or systems showed only one or few circadian rhythms at a time. To provide an overall view of the internal temporal order of circadian rhythms in human AT including genes implicated in metabolic processes such as energy intake and expenditure, insulin resistance, adipocyte differentiation, dyslipidemia, and body fat distribution. Visceral and subcutaneous abdominal AT biopsies (n=6) were obtained from morbid obese women (BMI≥40 kg/m(2) ). To investigate rhythmic expression pattern, AT explants were cultured during 24-h and gene expression was analyzed at the following times: 08:00, 14:00, 20:00, 02:00 h using quantitative real-time PCR. Clock genes, glucocorticoid metabolism-related genes, leptin, adiponectin and their receptors were studied. Significant differences were found both in achrophases and relative-amplitude among genes (P<0.05). Amplitude of most genes rhythms was high (>30%). When interpreting the phase map of gene expression in both depots, data indicated that circadian rhythmicity of the genes studied followed a predictable physiological pattern, particularly for subcutaneous AT. Interesting are the relationships between adiponectin, leptin, and glucocorticoid metabolism-related genes circadian profiles. Their metabolic significance is discussed. Visceral AT behaved in a different way than subcutaneous for most of the genes studied. For every gene, protein mRNA levels fluctuated during the day in synchrony with its receptors. We have provided an overall view of the internal temporal order of circadian rhythms in human adipose tissue.  相似文献

We made a comparative analysis of the cytogenetics of spiny rat species of the genus Proechimys collected from several sites of the Madeira River basin (Amazonas State, Brazil) and Jari River valley (Pará State, Brazil). Individuals were assigned to three groups based on diploid and fundamental numbers: 2n = 28, FN = 46 (P. cuvieri and P. gr. longicaudatus); 2n = 38, FN = 52 (Proechimys gr. guyannensis), and 2n = 40, FN = 54 (P. gardneri). The nucleolar organizer region (NOR) was interstitial on the long arm of one submetacentric pair, as seen in all species of Proechimys analyzed thus far. However, its position in the karyotype was variable. A duplication of the NOR in one of the homologues was detected in P. gr. longicaudatus from the Aripuan? basin along the mid Madeira. The C-band pattern varied between species and, together with the NOR, allowed the identification of two evolutionary units in P. gr. longicaudatus in the region of the mid Madeira River (cytotypes A and B). The morphology and banding of the sex chromosomes were species specific. A range extension is suggested for the geographic distribution of P. gardneri and P. gr. longicaudatus. Moreover, we suggest that species of Proechimys with 2n = 38 chromosomes are restricted to east of the Negro River and north of the Amazon River. We also revised the published chromosome data available for Proechimys.  相似文献

Evidence of a circadian clock mechanism was found in the cave crayfish Procambarus cavernicola. Analysis of motor activity recorded in this species during 12 consecutive days in either free running (constant darkness, DD or constant light, LL) or entrainment conditions (12 h of light alternated with 12 h of darkness, 12 : 12 LD) showed a well recognized circadian rhythm. In this rhythm however, the absence of synchronization by periodical external signals was notorious. The comparison between the motor circadian rhythm in cave crayfish and epigeous crayfish Procambarus clarkii (these last studied during juvenile and adult stages), evidenced strong similitude between the motor circadian rhythm of cave crayfish and juvenile epigeous crayfish.  相似文献

The locomotor activity rhythm of the desert woodlouse Hemilepistus reaumurii was monitored as individuals over the four seasons, under entraining and constant darkness conditions. Results indicated that individuals exhibited an endogenous rhythm of locomotor activity with a circadian period longer in spring than the other seasons whatever the regimen. Due to the important inter-individual variability, no significant difference in period was found between seasons as well as between regimens. Periodogram analysis revealed also an ultradian period around 12 h. Activity was mostly confined to the hours of the photophase or to those of subjective day. The activity pattern showed two main peaks. This bimodal circadian rhythm persisted for as long as the experiments were run, and was clearer in summer and autumn than in winter. The most clearly defined rhythms were found in spring and summer recordings, respectively, under entraining and free running conditions. The variation of activity patterns according to the seasons will be discussed.  相似文献

The daily pattern of blood-borne melatonin varies seasonally under the control of a multi-oscillator circadian pacemaker. Here we examine patterns of melatonin secretion and locomotor activity in Siberian and Syrian hamsters entrained to bimodal LDLD8:4:8:4 and LD20:4 lighting schedules that facilitate novel temporal arrangements of component circadian oscillators. Under LDLD, both species robustly bifurcated wheel-running activity in distinct day scotophase (DS) and night scotophase (NS) bouts. Siberian hamsters displayed significant melatonin increases during each scotophase in LDLD, and in the single daily scotophase of LD20:4. The bimodal melatonin secretion pattern persisted in acutely extended 16 h scotophases. Syrian hamsters, in contrast, showed no significant increases in plasma melatonin during either scotophase of LDLD8:4:8:4 or in LD20:4. In this species, detectable levels were observed only when the DS of LDLD was acutely extended to yield 16 h of darkness. Established species differences in the phase lag of nocturnal melatonin secretion relative to activity onset may underlie the above contrast: In non-bifurcated entrainment to 24 h LD cycles, Siberian hamsters show increased melatonin secretion within ~2 h after activity onset, whereas in Syrian hamsters, detectable melatonin secretion phase lags activity onset and the L/D transition by at least 4?h. The present results provide new evidence indicating multi-oscillator regulation of the waveform of melatonin secretion, specifically, the circadian control of the onset, offset and duration of nocturnal secretion.  相似文献

Entrainment of running wheel activity in DD was studied in adult male Long Evans rats exposed to cycles of a constant dose of melatonin (MEL; 100 microg/h) infused subcutaneously. The period (T) of the MEL cycle was initially kept at 24 h until stable entrainment was established; T was then changed in a stepwise manner, and each new T value was maintained for at least 20 cycles. Entrainment by phase advance occurred near circadian time 12 (activity onset), and the range of entrainment was between 30 and 35 min. The negative phase angle difference between activity onset and MEL onset increased as T values approached the entrainment limit, whereas no change in the duration of daily activity periods was found. No difference was observed between pre- and posttreatment values of the endogenous circadian period; hence, no aftereffects were found for any T value. These results indicate that the functional properties of entrainment to MEL are similar to those of entrainment to light, suggesting that both zeitgebers share a common timing mechanism.  相似文献
