During 3 successive winters, we studied the dormancy sites ofPropylea quatuordecimpunctata (L.) andCoccinella septempunctata L., 2 species of ladybirds which hibernate in leaf litter. Samples of litter were taken from several kinds of forest to study the influence of 3 variables (exposure; altitude; sampling place: edge or inner wood) on the abundance of ladybirds. We found the ecological requirements of the 2 species of coccinellids to be quite different:C. septempunctata prefers forest edges orientated towards the South and the West.P. quatuordecimpunctata prefers the inner wood and does not show a preference for station exposure. For each species, the number of ladybirds collected in the samples is positively correlated with station altitude. In addition, some observations were carried out to examine the main mortality factors just before and during dormancy. In maize fields near dormancy sites, the harvest is very harmful forC. septempunctata. During the winter,P. quatuordecimpunctata andC. septempunctata suffer fromBeauveria ssp. and some ladybirds have parasitoïds.

Plants genetically modified to express Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) have been found to confer partial resistance to homopteran pests. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate direct effects of GNA on larvae of three species of aphid predators that differ in their feeding and digestive physiology, i.e. Chrysoperla carnea, Adalia bipunctata and Coccinella septempunctata. Longevity of all three predator species was directly affected by GNA, when they were fed a sucrose solution containing 1% GNA. However, a difference in sensitivity towards GNA was observed when comparing the first and last larval stage of the three species. In vitro studies revealed that gut enzymes from none of the three species were able to break down GNA. In vivo feed-chase studies demonstrated accumulation of GNA in the larvae. After the larvae had been transferred to a diet devoid of GNA, the protein stayed present in the body of C. carnea, but decreased over time in both ladybirds. Binding studies showed that GNA binds to glycoproteins that can be found in the guts of larvae of all three predator species. Immunoassay by Western blotting of haemolymph samples only occasionally showed the presence of GNA. Fluorescence microscopy confirmed GNA accumulation in the midgut of C. carnea larvae. Implications of these findings for non-target risk assessment of GNA-transgenic crops are discussed.

Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) is an important biological control agent currently being used in many integrated pest management (IPM) programs to control insect pests. The effect of post-treatment temperature on insecticide toxicity of a spinosyn (spinosad), pyrethroid (lambda cyhalothrin), organophosphate (chlorpyrifos) and new chemistry (acetamiprid) to C. carnea larvae was investigated under laboratory conditions. Temperature coefficients of each insecticide tested were evaluated. From 20 to 40 °C, toxicity of lambda cyhalothrin and spinosad decreased by 2.15- and 1.87-fold while toxicity of acetamiprid and chlorpyrifos increased by 2.00 and 1.79-fold, respectively. The study demonstrates that pesticide effectiveness may vary according to environmental conditions. In cropping systems where multiple insecticide products are used, attention should be given to temperature variation as a key factor in making pest management strategies safer for biological control agents. Insecticides with a negative temperature coefficient may play a constructive role to conserve C. carnea populations.

The effects of the invasion ofan exotic predator, Harmonia axyridis(Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), wereinvestigated using three experiments on theecology of aphid predators on apple. Oneexperiment, 1992, was collected prior to theH. axyridis invasion, and two others,1996 to 1997 and 1999 to 2000, were collectedafter the invasion. Except for one year, 1999,H. axyridis was the dominant coccinellid, replacing the formerly dominant Coccinellaseptempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae),another exotic species. The dominance of H. axyridis was greater among larvae thanamong adults. There was no apparent effect ofthe H. axyridis invasion on abundance ofthe predator, Aphidoletes aphidimyza(Rondani) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) and apossible positive effect on the abundance ofchrysopids (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). Principal component analysis indicated thatalthough individual species were affected, theoverall effect of H. axyridis invasion onthe predator guild as a whole was negligible. The data indicate that the interaction betweenthe two exotic species, H. axyridis andC. septempunctata, may be allowing nativecoccinellids to become more abundant on applethan when C. septempunctata was thedominant coccinellid.

Pre-imaginal development, immaturesurvival, and reproduction of a ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus, werestudied in response to six aphid species, Aphiscraccivora Koch, Aphis gossypii Glover,Aphis nerii Boyer de Fonscolombe,Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach), Myzuspersicae (Sulzer) and Uroleuconcompositae (Theobald) to quantify theirrelative suitability as prey. Pre-adultdevelopment was shortest (13.93 ± 0.12 days)when fed on L. erysimi and longest(22.85 ± 0.10 days) on A. nerii. Immaturesurvival, adult emergence, growth index, relative growth rate, development rate, maleand female longevity, oviposition period, fecundity and hatching percent were maximal, i.e. 73.47 ± 0.89%, 90.07 ± 1.43%,8.62 ± 0.23, 1.52 ± 0.02, 0.07,81.10 ± 1.26 days, 85.70 ± 1.45 days,69.80 ± 1.32 days, 1764.10 ± 8.46,and 87.88 ± 1.05, respectively when C.septempunctata were fed on L. erysimi. The same parameters were minimal, i.e.43.86 ± 1.33%, 71.65 ± 2.75%,2.02 ± 0.08, 0.49 ± 0.02, 0.04,44.40 ± 1.39 days, 53.50 ± 1.00 days,16.40 ± 0.60 days, 203.20 ± 11.83, and48.68 ± 2.06, respectively on A. nerii. Theweights of different ladybird life stages weremaximal after feeding on L. erysimi and minimalon A. nerii. Regression analyses of thedata revealed linear relationships betweendevelopment rate and weight of adult; dailyprey consumption and relative growth rate; logweight of adult male and female; and longevityand fecundity of female. On the basis of thesefindings, the order of suitability of aphidspecies for C. septempunctata is L. erysimi >M. persicae > A. craccivora > A. gossypii >U. compositae > A. nerii. Thus, the presentinformation can be utilized for the massrearing of C. septempunctata by supplyingthe best food and can also help in theprediction of the relative abundance of theladybird on different aphid infestations in thefields.

AbstractBiocontrol potential of the entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) on the second-instar larvae of the non-target insect predators, Coccinella septumpunctata and Chrysoperla carnea as compared to Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) was evaluated. The pathogenicity of EPNs, namely, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, Steinernema feltiae and Steinernema carpocapsae at concentrations 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600 IJs/cup) were tested at 2, 4 and 6 days’ post-inoculation. Laboratory results showed significant differences among the mortality rates of different tested larvae, for each concentration at different time intervals. H. bacteriophora induced the highest mortality followed by S. carpocapsae treatment. However, S. feltiae was found to be more safety on predators as it causes less mortality at 6 days of treatment. The values of half lethal concentrations (LC50) were 614.06, 3797.43 and 676.47 IJs/cup for C. Carnea and 390.60, 1209.88 and 503.65 IJs/cup for C. septumpunctata treated by H. bacteriophora, S. feltiae and S. carpocapsae, respectively. In semi-field experiments, there were non-significant differences among mortality of each predator indicated at concentrations of the different EPNs after 2 days or 6 days’ post-inoculation. The study revealed a lethal pathogenic effect of EPNs against insect pests but caused low mortality on the non-target ones.

A population ofChrysoperla carneafrom San Pedro, Coahuila, Mexico, showed phenological responses that differ from those of previously studied North American biotypes. Short daylengths that induce diapause in other biotypes resulted in low incidences of diapause in the San Pedro population. Diapause induction required a decrease in daylength (from long to short days). Constant long days produced variable reproductive responses, whereas an increase in daylength (from short to long day) resulted in high incidences of reproduction. Providing prey to adults that had been reared under short days consistently increased the incidences of reproduction. Storage of either diapausing or nondiapausing adults at low temperature (5°C) for 13 weeks yielded better survivorship and reproductive performance than in unstored (24°C) controls. For efficient production, the San Pedro population ofC. carneamay be reared either with an increase in daylength or with the regular intervention of a storage period. To induce diapause in individuals destined for storage, larvae may be reared under long-day photoperiod and the prepupae transferred to short days.

A new method for the quantification of insect movements on leaves is presented and applied to larvae of a wheat aphid predator, C. septempunctata. The method results from behavioral definition of positions adopted by this predator during its advance along the wheat leaf. Through a factor analysis of multiple correspondences, the method allowed specification of some aspects of predator movements on plants, especially the frequency of position associations, to give a new definition of local search and to describe some behavioral interactions with aphids. The consequences for predator efficiency are discussed.

Three field experiments, with factorial designs and consisting of monocrops of oats, Avena sativa, and mixtures of oats with faba bean, Vicia faba, were conducted in 1983–1985. The densities of generalist epigeal predators were manipulated by vertical barriers or ingress and egress trenches. Pitfall trapping was used to measure the effect of manipulation. Tillers were sampled to monitor populations of the major pest of oats, the bird cherry-oats aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi, and to estimate their peak densities. Also grain yields were measured. The barriers and the egress trenches significantly reduced the pitfall catches of carabids, staphylinids and spiders. The effect on Coccinella septempunctata was variable. The peak aphid densities were 11–125% higher in the predator reduction treatments than in the controls. The grain yields of oats were reduced by 19–22% in all cases where aphid densities were increased by the manipulations. Relief of predation pressure by generalist epigeal predators is the proposed explanation for the increased R. padi densities and subsequently decreased oat yields.Mixed cropping increased the pitfall catches of carabids by 14–36%. Trechus spp. contributed most to the pattern. In 1985 the early egress manipulation increased the aphids' peak density and decreased the yield of oats significantly more in the monocrop than in the mixture: this was thought to be because the R. padi population escaped predation as the result of a higher colonization rate in the mixture, rather than being due to responses of the predators to crop diversification.

The behaviour and distribution of adultCoccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were recorded in two plots of winter wheat infested with the cereal aphidsSitobion avenae (F.) andMetopolophium dirhodum (Walk.) (Homoptera: Aphididae). One plot was sprayed with the pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin at a rate of 6.25 g a.i./ha
and the other was left unsprayed. Single ladybird beetles were released sequentially on the ground at the centre of the sprayed
and unsprayed plots and their behaviour and position in the crop canopy were recorded at 30 second intervals for a total of
15 min per beetle. Assessments, with fresh beetles, continued for four days after spray application with a total of eighty
ladybird beetles observed. The 15 min period was selected to avoid lethal effects and no ladybird beetles were killed or knocked
down as a result of exposure to deltamethrin residues during this period. Significant differences were found between the overall
behaviour patterns ofC. septempunctata in the untreated and deltamethrin treated plots up to three days after the spray application. Ladybird beetles exposed to
deltamethrin residues were observed to walk and groom significantly more frequently and to rest significantly less frequently
than those in the unsprayed plot. Significant differences were also found between the observed distribution of ladybird beetles
in the sprayed and unsprayed crop canopies, with higher numbers of observations towards the bottom of the crop canopy and
on the ground in the deltamethrin treated plot than in the untreated plot during the first two days after deltamethrin application.
Upon the foliage itself, ladybird beetles were observed significantly more frequently on the abaxial leaf surface in the deltamethrin
treated crop compared with the untreated crop. The results are discussed in terms of possible evidence for the repellency
of deltamethrin toC. septempunctata and also the implications for integrated pest management of changes in predator behaviour and crop distribution resulting
from sub-lethal uptake of insecticides.

The effects of imidacloprid, propargite, and pymetrozine on the common green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) were investigated in the laboratory, using the IOBC-system and the life table response experiment. Residual glass
plate bioassays were carried out using two-day-old larvae at the Iranian maximum field recommended rate of each commonly used
pesticide. All three tested pesticides produced significant adverse effects on pre-imaginal survival (p < 0.01). Imidacloprid had no significant effect on fecundity, but propargite and pymetrozin caused significant reductions
(p < 0.05). According to the IOBC classification, imidacloprid was found to be harmless (E = 27.44%); propargite (E = 49.78%) and pymetrozine (E = 66.9%) were slightly harmful. Life table assays revealed that imidacloprid and propargite had no significant effects on
the intrinsic rate of natural increase, while pymetrozine caused a 34% reduction in r
m
value (p < 0.05). Propargite was non-toxic to C. carnea under the tested conditions. In the case of imidacloprid, using a glass plate as test substrate led to␣underestimation of
its effects. The life table assay showed more adverse effects of pymetrozine than the IOBC method.

The successful use of predators in classical biocontrol programmes needs several background laboratory investigations, one of which is the evaluation of predator behavioural responses to changes in the density of their prey. The impact effect of the density of two prey species [Myzus persicae Sulzer and Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae)] on the predation rates of third-instar Chrysoperla carnea Stephens (Chrysopidae: Neuroptera) and fourth-instar Coccinella septempunctata L. and Hippodamia variegata Goeze (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) larvae was studied. Although prey species, predator species, prey density, and their interactions all had significant effects on the numbers of aphids consumed, the type of functional response did not vary, remaining a type II response in all treatments. However, the type II parameters differed among predator species on the same prey species, and for each predator species on the two prey species. Chrysoperla. carnea on M. persicae and H. variegata on A. craccivora were more voracious than other predators. In the context of functional response and biological control, the release of these predators, that show inverse density-dependent mortality, has to be started in early season to build up their population on low aphid densities and attack later high aphid populations.

Toxicity of spinosad to immature stages of Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) and its effect on the reproduction and survival of adult stages after direct spray and
ingestion treatments were evaluated. Spinosad was harmless to C. carnea eggs and pupae irrespective of concentrations or method of treatments. Direct spray of spinosad to first instar caused significant
reduction in rate of pupation and L1-adult survival, but did not affect the rate of adult emergence. Third-instar bioassay
revealed significant difference in L3-adult survival. When C. carnea first instars were fed upon spinosad-treated-Brevicoryne
brassicae (L.), significant differences in investigated parameters were not observed among different treatments. The weight of third
instar and pupae were comparable regardless of tested spinosad concentrations. Also, feeding on spinosad treated-B. brassicae had no negative impact on fecundity and fertility. Furthermore, ingestion of spinosad contaminated-B. brassicae significantly prolonged larval and larval + pupal periods. The larval feeding capacity of C. carnea did not differ significantly between larvae fed on spinosad-treated and untreated aphids with the exception of first instar.
When C. carnea adults were allowed to oviposit on spinosad treated-substrate, total number of eggs laid, percent of eggs laid on the treated
substrate and egg hatching did not differ from those of control. However, when adults were fed on spinosad-treated artificial
diet, negative effects on adult survival and fecundity were observed.

Preimaginal development, mortality, aphid consumption rate, and size and weight upon reaching the adult stage of the aphidophagous coccinellids Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville and Coccinella septempunctata L. collected from Karditsa, central Greece, were examined at four constant temperatures (14, 17, 20 and 23 °C) and L16:D8. The coccinellids fed on the tobacco aphid, Myzus persicae nicotianae Blackman. Egg, larval and pupal mortality was highest at 14 °C reaching 85.0, 73.8 and 29.4% in H. convergens and 49.3, 75.4 and 58.8% in C. septempunctata, respectively. Total preimaginal development ranged from 57.2 to 70.4 days at 14 °C, and to 16.9 and 22.1 days at 23 °C in H. convergens and C. septempunctata, respectively. Heavier and larger adults of H. convergens were obtained at 17 and 20 ° C. In C. septempunctata temperature did not affect adult weight while the lowest size was observed at 14 and 17 °C. Day-degrees requirements for preimaginal development in H. corvengens were 212.9 above a developmental threshold of 11.0 °C. The corresponding values for C. septempunctata were 281.5 and 10.7 °C. In H. convergens total and daily aphid consumption ranged from 46.8 aphids at 14 °C to 85.0 aphids at 23 °C and from 1.5 aphids at 14 °C to 9.2 aphids at 23 °C, respectively. The corresponding values for C. septempunctata were 112.0 and 2.7 at 14 °C and 157.7 and 12.4 at 23 °C. The results show the high potential of both predators as biological control agents against the tobacco aphid. The knowledge obtained could be essential for their appropriate use and for the improvement of mass rearing systems.

Summary Fertilization in the freshwater hydrozoanHydra carnea has been examined by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Sperm penetrate the jelly coat which covers the entire egg surface only at the site of the emission of the polar bodies. The egg surface exhibits a small depression, the so called fertilization pit at this site. Sperm-egg fusion takes place only at the bottom of the fertilization pit.Hydra sperm lack a structurally distinct acrosome and in most of the observed cases, fusion was initiated by contact between the membrane of the lateral part of the sperm head and the egg surfacce. Neither microvilli nor a fertilization cone are formed at the site of gamete fusion. The process of membrane fusion takes only a few seconds and within 1 to 2 min sperm head and midpiece are incorporated in the egg.Electron dense material is released by the egg upon insemination but cortical granule exocytosis does not occur and a fertilization envelope is not formed. The possible polyspermy-preventing mechanisms in hydrozoans are discussed.
Hydra eggs can be cut into halves whereupon the egg membranes reseal at the cut edges and the fragments assume a spherical shape. Fragments containing the female pronucleus can be inseminated and exhibit normal cleavage and development. The observation that in such isolated parts the jelly coat will not fuse along the cut edges was used to determine its role in site-specific gamete fusion. These experiments indicate that site-specificity of gamete fusion can be attributed to special membrane properties at the fertilization pit.

To determine whether diverse populations and biotypes of Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) can be mass-produced and stored under uniform conditions, we assessed reproduction in five North American populations, four from the carnea biotype and one from the mohave biotype. Non-diapause adults from the carnea biotype varied significantly in only one aspect of reproduction, viz., the preoviposition period, whereas the duration and rate of oviposition, as well as fecundity, did not vary significantly. Relative to the carnea populations, the mohave population typically had delayed oviposition and a lower rate of oviposition; however, its oviposition period was long, and thus its fecundity differed only from that of the most productive carnea populations. The shelf-life (= survival during storage, and subsequent survival and reproduction after storage) was evaluated for four populations of the carnea biotype. Survival of diapausing adults during the first 18 weeks of storage was high among all four populations; adults from three populations also showed high survival after 35 weeks of storage. A high incidence of females from all four populations laid some fertile eggs after being stored for up to 31 weeks or longer. After six or more weeks of storage, average fecundity was high and ranged from 400–900 eggs/female. Duration of storage (up to 39 weeks) was a significant determinant of fecundity in two of the four populations. In practice, diverse populations of C. carnea can be efficiently mass-produced (with or without storage) under uniform conditions in the insectary. Thus, the choice of which populations to mass-produce and use in augmentation can be based primarily on the characteristics (e.g., climate, habitat, crop) of the intended area of release, rather than on considerations concerning mass-rearing.

The spatial distribution of polyphagous predators may often reflect the integration of aggregative responses to local densities
of multiple species of prey, and as such may have consequences for the indirect linkages among the prey sharing these predators.
In a factorial field experiment in which we manipulated local prey densities within a field of alfalfa in Utah (USA), we tested
whether aphidophagous ladybirds would aggregate not only in response to their primary aphid prey, but also in response to
an abundant alternative prey, the alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica [Gyllenhal]). Native North American ladybirds (primarily Hippodamia convergens Guerin and H. quinquesignata quinquesignata [Kirby]) responded only to spatial variation in aphid density. In contrast, the introduced ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata L., aggregated also at local concentrations of the weevil late in the experiment when weevil density was high and aphid density
was relatively low throughout all experimental plots. The results support the hypothesis that C. septempunctata is more responsive than are native ladybirds to the availability of alternative prey in alfalfa, which may account in part
for the displacement of native ladybirds from alfalfa by the introduced species as aphid numbers have declined. The differing
responses of the native and introduced ladybirds to spatial patterns of the alternative prey underscore the importance of
extending the study of predator aggregation to understand better how polyphagous predators distribute themselves in response
to spatial patterns of multiple species of potential prey.

Harmonia axyridis is a predatory coccinellid, native to central and eastern Asia. It has been available in many countries for use as a biological
control agent of pest aphids and scale insects. In many of these countries, including the USA, H. axyridis has established. It is now considered an invasive alien species for a number of reasons, including its impact on functional
biodiversity. Beauveria bassiana is known to be a natural mortality agent of overwintering coccinellids and is a potential candidate for the biological control
of H. axyridis. In this paper we compare the susceptibility of three species of coccinellid, H. axyridis (cultures derived from Japan and UK), Coccinella septempunctata and Adalia bipunctata to infection by B. bassiana (commercial strain GHA) after exposure at three doses (105, 107, 109 conidia ml−1). The two subpopulations of H. axyridis (Japan and UK) were more resistant to B. bassiana infection than either A. bipunctata or C. septempunctata. This is exemplified by the median lethal doses at 10 days post-inoculation (LD50) of 106.2, 106.0, 108.3, 109.6 conidia ml−1 for A. bipunctata, C. septempunctata, H. axyridis (Japan) and H. axyridis (UK), respectively. Only doses of 109 conidia ml−1 resulted in mortality of H. axyridis, in contrast, 80% of C. septempunctata and 70% of A. bipunctata exposed to 107 conidia ml−1 of B. bassiana succumbed to infection. The fecundity (cumulative mean egg production over 10 days) of A. bipunctata and H. axyridis (UK) was also assessed. The fecundity of C. septempunctata could not be assessed because this species requires diapause prior to the onset of reproduction and these studies were on
beetles that had recently eclosed (2–8 weeks). Harmonia axyridis (Japan) produced no eggs in most treatments including the control and so was excluded from analysis. High dose (109 conidia ml−1) inoculation reduced the fecundity of A. bipunctata to zero but egg production was similar for individuals inoculated with doses of 105, 107 conidia ml−1 and control individuals. In contrast, all doses of B. basssiana reduced H. axyridis (UK) egg production dramatically. We discuss these results in relation to the potential for control of H. axyridis using B. bassiana.

In the present study, we investigated the natural control of aphids by predators in wheat fields in a low (L) and high-input
cropping region (H) of Germany during a 10-year period. Data for the statistical analyses were obtained from weekly after
the start of aphid emergence. The mean annual aphid indices, calculated as the sum of Sitobion avenae (Fabr.), Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), Metopolophium dirhodum (Walk.)(Homoptera: Aphididae), were 30.4 and 81.5 × 103 aphid days per m2, for L and H, respectively. Nine predator fractions
were analysed: Coccinella septempunctata L., adults (1) and larvae (2), Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (L.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) adults (3) and larvae (4), syrphid larvae (mostly Episyrphus balteatus [De Geer] (Diptera: Syrphidae)) (5), Chrysoperla carnea Steph. (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) larvae (6), and adult carabids (7), staphylinids (8) and spiders (9). The two sites were
comparable in terms of the mean size of the overall predator community, expressed in predator units (PU): 4.9 PU/m2 (L) vs.
5.4 PU/m2 (H). Most predator fractions responded numerically to increasing aphid densities. The numerical response was strongest
in syrphid larvae, scarcely detectable in adult coccinellids, and virtually non-existent in epigeic arthropods. Multiple regression
models revealed indirect relationships between the weekly overall predator community densities (PU/m2) and individual predator
fractions (individuals/m2) and absolute rates of aphid density increase (individuals/m2) one or two weeks after baseline.
A site-independent reduction of the aphid density increase to nil (y = 0) was observed at 3.9 to 4.2 PU/m2. Consequently,
the 2.7 times higher aphid density at H cannot be attributed to the presence of fewer predators or lower effects of the overall

In an effort to suppress the tuliptree aphidIllinoia liriodendri (Monell), approximately 2,000 eggs ofChrysoperla carnea (Stephens) from a commercial insectary were released 4 times on each of 8 tuliptreesLiriodendron tulipifera L. in Berkeley, California, during the spring of 1984.
On trees foraged by the Argentine antIridomyrmex humilis (Mayr), 98% of the eggs ofC. carnea were removed from the egg release tapes by the ants. A total of about 1,250 larvae per tree eclosed from the 8,000 eggs released
on each tree without ants. Fifty percent of the larvae that did eclose died due to cannibalism or entrapment in the sticky
egg release tapes and approximately 625 first instar larvae on each tree were free to forage for aphids.
Inundative lacewing releases ofC. carnea did not suppress populations ofI. liriodendri due to ant predation, the low viability of commercial eggs (0–73% eclosion),
