Two types of deep-water coral bioherms occur off the coast of southeastern United States: Oculina and Lophelia/Enallopsammia. The deep-water Oculina bioherms form an extensive reef system at depths of 70–100 m along the shelf edge off central eastern Florida. These reefs are comprised of numerous pinnacles and ridges, 3–35 m in height. Each pinnacle is a bank of unconsolidated sediment and coral debris that is capped on the slopes and crest with living and dead colonies of Oculina varicosa, the ivory tree coral. In comparison, deep-water reefs of Lophelia pertusa and Enallopsammia profunda corals occur at depths of 500–850 m (maximum 150-m relief) along the base of the Florida-Hatteras slope in the Straits of Florida. On the western edge of the Blake Plateau off South Carolina and Georgia, 54-m high banks of Enallopsammia and Lophelia occur at depths of 490–550 m, whereas on the eastern edge of the plateau the reefs form structures 146 m in height and at depths of 640–869 m. The geomorphology and functional structure of both the Oculina and Lophelia reefs are similar. North of Little Bahama Bank, at depths of 1000–1300 m, a region of bioherms is dominated by the coral Solenosmilia sp.; Lophelia is reportedly absent. This paper summarizes 25 years of submersible studies on the deep-water Oculina reefs, describes submersible reconnaissance of deep-water Lophelia reefs off the southeastern United States, and contrasts these types of bioherms with the deep-water lithoherms in the Straits of Florida west of the Bahamas.  相似文献

Scrub mangrove wetlands colonize the intertidal zone of fossil lagoons located in carbonate continental margins along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. These unique ecological types were investigated in October, 1994, by locating transects in several mangrove forests along the Caribbean coast of the peninsula. Four species of mangrove occurred at these sites including Rhizophora mangle, Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa, Conocarpus erecta. This is one of the first examples of a species rich scrub forest. The mangroves fell into three height categories: short scrub less than 1.5 m, tall scrub to 3.0 m, and basin forests between 4.5 and 6 m. Average height, diameter (dbh), basal area, and complexity index generally increased from short scrub to basin forests. Basal area, ranged from 0.16 m2 ha–1 in a short scrub forest intermixed with Cladium jamaicense to 12.9 m2 ha–1 in a basin forest. Density ranged from 1520 trees ha–1 to over 25,000 trees ha–1 in a short scrub forest dominated by R. mangle. The complexity index ranged from 0.01 to 8.3. Height, dbh, basal area, and complexity index were positively related. A number of trees were growing as sprouts from larger downed trunks, suggesting that hurricanes, such as Gilbert that occurred in 1988, are important in controlling the structure of these forests. These forests appear isolated from the sea, but are influenced by groundwater exchange occurring at the land-margin zone.  相似文献

A subfossil fragment of the deep-sea gorgonian coral Primnoa resedaeformis was 14C AMS dated along a radial growth transect. Dates ranged from 2600±50 at the outside, to 2920±60 14C years BP near the interior, suggesting an age of <300 years. The avergae radial growth was approximately 0.044 mm.yr–1. Based on comparisons with live-collected specimens, we estimate the entire colony may have been about 0.5–0.75 m tall, with a linear tip extension rate of 1.5–2.5 mm.yr–1. Towards the centre of the main stem, the coral skeleton is composed of alternating couplets, 200 m in width, of gorgonin (a horn-like organic skeletal protein) and calcite. We believe these couplets are annual. Within this larger scale of banding are finer couplets of gorgonin and calcite, with frequencies suggesting lunar monthly periodicity. Both scales of banding may reflect fluctuations in food supply from sinking POM, or from tidally-resuspended bottom POM, along with benthic consumers. Outer skeletal growth is predominantly massive calcite with intermittent gorgonin layers. If carbonate precipitation in this zone were continuous, approximately 25 m radial growth would be deposited every year. The Scleractinian Desmophyllum cristagalli lives to <200 years, and has rates of linear extension of 0.5–1.0 mm.yr–1. The skeletons show growth bands approximately 10 m wide, which may be annual. Due to tissue extension and retraction in life, parts of the skeleton may be overgrown, or suffer dissolution. Although we have shown in previous publications that sea water temperatures may be obtained from analysis of this coral, periods of skeletal dissolution, coupled with isotopic disequilibrium, will make obtaining long climatic records extremely difficult.  相似文献

A new technique for aging red coral Corallium rubrum (L.) colonies based on staining the organic matrix found in the axial calcareous skeleton is presented and validated. This method provided clear-cut images of growth rings of red coral. To demonstrate their annual periodicity, two approaches have been used: (i) applying this technique to adult colonies of known age (more than 20 years old), and (ii) labeling colonies with calcein and allowing them to grow for 1 year. Results provided evidence of the annual periodicity of growth rings. This new method assesses colony age with an underestimate of true age by 3–4 years. The difference between estimated age and actual age could be attributed to the phase of initial growth during which rings are not formed. Colonies from different sites, depths, and habitats (n=33) were analyzed yielding preliminary data on longevity and mean growth rates in red coral. Colonies from shallow habitats (15–62 m) examined here with basal diameter of about 7 mm were at least 30–40 years old. Mean growth rate of basal diameter was 0.35±0.15 mm year–1. Comparison with previous aging methods used for red coral resulted in considerable differences in estimations of age (about 10 years greater in this study) and growth rates (about four times lower). The application of this method to red coral will provide key data as a basis for developing management and conservation plans for this valuable species.Communicated by: H.R. Lasker  相似文献

The abundance of Gloeotrichia echinulata colonies in the sediments of Lake Erken and their phosphorus content were investigated to determine the contribution of Gloeotrichia colonies to total sediment phosphorus. Moreover, the potential size of the algal inoculum and the migration to the water during summer were estimated. The surplus phosphorus content of the resting colonies in the sediment was about 45% of total phosphorus, which maximized at 8.5 µg P (mg dw)–1 or 81 ng P colony–1. The C:P ratio (by weight) in the early colonies appearing in the lake water was 50:1, while the ratio stabilized at 150 during the major migration period. The internal supply of surplus phosphorus was used during the pelagic growth of the colonies. The internal phosphorus loading to the epilimnion of Lake Erken due to Gloeotrichia migration could, from the measurements of the increase in particulate epilimnetic phosphorus, be estimated at 40 mg P m –2 or 2.5 mg P m–2 d–1 in late July and early August. Determination of the number of colonies in the sediment before and during the migration verified this value to be a conservative estimate of the internal phosphorus loading due to Gloeotrichia migration to the epilimnion in Lake Erken. The sediment P content calculated from the P concentration in early epilimnion colonies resulted in a value of 35 µg P (g dw)–1 as a maximum. This corresponds to only 3% of the total phosphorus content in Lake Erken sediment.  相似文献

Large carbonate, bryozoan-serpulid constructions, made by Pentapora fascialis and Salmacina dysteri respectively, were found around karstic freshwater springs, called vruljas, in the Senj Archipelago (Velebit Channel, Croatia). In June 2002, several sites were investigated by SCUBA divers on the rocky cliffs of Grmac and dralova at depths ranging from 19 to 32 m. Mean colony diameter decreased with increasing distance from the vruljas: in the vicinity the mean diameter was 65.8±21 cm, at 2-m distance it was 40.4±8.2. Carbonate contribution was to a great extent due to the bryozoan (5,784±1,186 gm–2 CaCO3) rather than to the serpulid (383±218 gm–2 CaCO3). P. fascialis carbonate standing stock was remarkably high if compared with data from literature for shallow carbonate producers. The bryozoan-serpulid constructions can be indicated as important, even if localised, contributions to the carbonate budget in the Adriatic Sea.  相似文献

In recent spatial models describing interactions among a myrmecophilous butterfly Maculinea rebeli, a gentian Gentiana cruciata and two competing species of Myrmica ant, we predicted that apparent competition should exist between gentians (the food of young M. rebeli caterpillars) and Myrmica schencki, which supports M. rebeli in its final instar. Here we extend and quantify model predictions about the nature of this phenomenon, and relate them to ecological theory. We predict that: (i) Within sites supporting the butterfly, fewer M. schencki colonies occur in sub-areas containing gentians than in identical habitat lacking this plant. (ii) Where G. cruciata and M. schencki do co-exist, the ant colonies will be less than half the size of those living > 1.5 m from gentians; (iii) The turnover of M. schencki colonies will be much greater than that of other Myrmica species in nest sites situated within 1.5 m of a gentian. All three predictions were supported in the field on 3–6 sites in two mountain ranges, although the exact strength of the apparent competition differed from some model predictions. Field data were also consistent with predictions about apparent mutualisms between gentians and other ants. We suggest that apparent competition is likely to arise in any system in which a specialist enemy feeds sequentially on two or more species during its life-cycle, as occurs in many true parasite-host interactions. We also predict that more complex patterns involving other Myrmica species and G. cruciata occur in our system, with apparent competition existing between them in some sub-areas of a site being balanced by apparent mutualism between them in other sub-areas.  相似文献

Data on sexual reproduction of scleractinian coral species living in temperate zones, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea, are quite scarce. This paper describes sexual reproduction of the colonial coral Cladocora caespitosa from Veliko jezero (Mljet Island) in the Adriatic Sea. Spawned orange eggs and white sperm bundles were observed on the coral bank of C. caespitosa two nights before the full moon (20 June 2005) coinciding with increasing water temperature and correlated with the lunar cycle. Spawning was observed during five nights, involving about 30% of the colonies from the coral bank. Different colonies on the bank released only one type of gamete during the reproductive period. The diameter of the sperm bundles ranged from 100 to 200 μm (average 163 μm; SD = 47.08), while the female gametes diameter ranged from 300 to 500 μm (average 416 μm; SD = 73.12).  相似文献

In the leaf-cutting ant Atta cephalotes (L.) small colonies produce a relatively narrow size-range of small workers, whereas large colonies produce a much wider size-range of workers. In this study, I compared the foraging of four small A. cephalotes colonies (fewer than 5000 workers) with published data on foraging of large colonies to examine how colony size and worker size-range may be related to foraging ecology in leaf-cutting ants. I found that the foraging ecology of small A. cephalotes colonies is very different from that of large colonies. In small colonies, a relatively narrow size-range of foragers (1.4–6.7 mg, mean 3.3 mg) cut primarily herbs (ferns, grasses, and other small herbaceous plants) located within 7 m of the nest. In contrast, in large colonies, a broader size-range of workers (1.4–30 mg, mean 7.3 mg) participate in foraging, generally harvesting from trees 20–80 m from the nest, with larger workers cutting on trees with thicker and tougher leaves. Small colonies' dependence on small herbaceous plants near the nest may have a profound impact on distribution of A. cephalotes. A. cephalotes colonies are rarely found in primary forest, where the low occurrence of small herbaceous plants in the understory may preclude the establishment of young colonies.  相似文献

Unionid clams were collected at 1–2 m, 3–4 m and 6–7 m depth in lake Mattsee, a moderately mesotrophic lake, to investigate the effect of depth on clam growth and age structure. No significant differences in age structure of Anodonta cygnea were found (p=0.65). Three and ten years old clams were present at all depths, but in different percentages. Whereas at 1–2 m 13.3% of the collected clams were <4 years old, this percentage was 4.4% at 6–7 m and 7.1% at 3–4 m. A greater percentage (6.7%) of older mussels (9, 10 years) were collected at 6–7 m than at 1–2 m (2.2%). Growth declined with depth. Total length at a given age of clams at 1–2 m and 3–4 m did not differ (p=0.54), whereas differences were significant between clams at 1–2 m and 6–7 m (p<0.05) as well as between 3–4 m and 6–7 m (p<0.05). The Growth constant k was highest at 1–2 m depth.  相似文献

Uredospores of a barley isolate ofPuccinia striiformis West. were germinated on glucose peptone agar and the development of colonies was observed with a microscope. A small number (0.1–1%) of germ tubes did not abort during the first 20 h of incubation and either differentiated an infection structure or continued slowly to elongate for several days. In 4 out of 9 experiments some of these sporelings produced colonies that reached maximum size (0.15–0.20 mm) after 3 weeks at 15° C.  相似文献

Gametogenesis and spawning have been studied since 1986 in a population of Protopalythoa sp. (Anthozoa, Zoanthidea) from Orpheus Island, Great Barrier Reef. Fertile zooids were gonochoric or hermaphroditic with oocytes and sperm vesicles intermingled in the same mesentery; colonies were single sex or mixed. Oocytes arose in macrocnemes below the actinopharynx and were first observed in July. Their mean diameter increased from < 50 µm to 160–240 µm by November, by which time they contained zooxanthellae. Female zooids each produced 800–2400 ova. No testicular vesicles were visible before October but spermatozoa were present in November and December. Spawning in each of three years occurred in November (4th to 6th nights after full moon) simultaneously with mass spawning of scleractinian corals. The buoyant eggs (along with sperm in the hermaphroditic zooids) were released in bundles. Some large oocytes and mature sperm were still present in December.  相似文献

The integument of Lamippe rubra Bruzelius and of Enalcyonium rubicundum Olsson has been studied with the electron microscope. Most of the cuticle covering the body of Lamippe is represented by the epicuticle, which shows an average thickness of about 2.0 µm, but in sclerified zones it consists of a thin epicuticle (0.2 µm) and a stratified laminated procuticle (0.5–1.5 µm) without bow-shaped structure. A complex system of epithelial microvilli or a well-developed system of membranes running parallel to the cuticle is also present. The cuticle of Enalcyonium consists of a thin procuticle (0.4–0.5 µm) covered with a uniform fibrillar coat (0.5 µm), whereas in sclerotized areas it is composed of a stratified procuticle (0.7–3.5 µm) with bow-shaped structures. In both species, cuticular hairs and gland vents occur at the dorsal and ventral surfaces. Some of the hairs are considered to be sensory in nature. The cuticular ultrastructure of L. rubra and of E. rubicundum is compared with that of some other copepods.  相似文献

Summary The osphradium of Aplysia californica, a sensory organ, is a small yellow-brown epithelial patch located in the mantle cavity immediately anterior to the rostral attachment of the gill. Scanning electron microscopy reveals a round ellipsoid structure of 0.6–1 mm in diameter with a central, occasionally folded, sensory epithelium. The central area is covered with microvilli and surrounded by a densely ciliated epithelium. Transmission electron micrographs show that the columnar supporting cells in the sensory epithelium contain an abundance of apical pigment granules and microvilli. Between the epithelial-supporting cells, the putative sensory elements consist of thin neurites (0.4–1.5 m in diameter) that reach the sea-water side of the osphradium. The neurites contain many neurotubules, mitochondria, vesicles and cilia in their apices. The nerve endings originate from cell bodies up to 40 m below the epithelium or in the osphradial ganglion itself, as revealed by electron microscopy and retrograde labeling with Lucifer yellow. There appear to be two populations of putative sensory cells, a large population of heavily stained cell bodies 4–10 m in diameter and a few scattered cells of large diameter (25–60 m). Following lanthanum impregnation, septate junctions can be seen between all types of cells in the epithelium, 3–5 m below the sea-water surface. This study provides new information for further investigation of osmo- and mechanosensation in Aplysia californica.  相似文献

During a survey of bryophilous fungi from boreal and montane habitats in central Alberta, a hitherto undescribed species of Cladophialophora was recovered from Polytrichum juniperinum, Aulacomnium palustre, and Sphagnum fuscum. On potato dextrose agar (PDA) colonies grew slowly, attaining a diameter of 25 mm after 30 d, were dark grey, velvety, radially sulcate, and convolute and cracked at the centre. Micronematous conidiophores gave rise to branched chains of small (1–2 × 8–22 μm), cylindrical to fusiform conidia with truncate, swollen scars at each end. Phylogenies built on the ITS and ribosomal SSU regions indicate the isolates form a monophyletic clade within the family Herpotrichiellaceae (Chaetothyriales) that is composed of two geographically based groups, each with 99 % within-group sequence similarity and 97–98 % between-group sequence similarity. A teleomorph has not been found but would likely be similar to species of Capronia. In vitro inoculation of the isolates onto axenically grown P. juniperinum produced no discernible host symptoms, and host penetration could not be detected using light microscopy. The production of polyphenol oxidases by the fungus and the role of other Cladophialophora species as latent endophytes and saprobes suggest that a potential role for the fungus is the degradation of the polyphenol-rich cell walls of mosses. A dichotomous key to species of the genus Cladophialophora is provided.  相似文献

Chaetosphaeria tortuosa is described as the newly discovered teleomorph of Menispora tortuosa, based on specimens from Canada and the Czech Republic, and single spore isolations from both morphs. The fungus produces superficial, more or less globose, papillate, dark brown to black smooth perithecia (200–)220–250 × (220–)230–260 μm. The asci are unitunicate, 8-spored, cylindrical-fusiform, (110–)120–133(–145) × 12–14 with a distinct apical, nonamyloid annulus 1–1.5 μm high, 3.5–4 μm wide. The ascospores are fusiform, 19–24 × 5–6 μm, hyaline, 3-septate, smooth, and 2-seriate in the ascus. The morphology of the teleomorph and anamorph are similar to that of C. ovoidea (anamorph: M. glauca), differing in dimensions of asci and ascospores, and in the disposition and morphology of the phialides of the anamorphs. The generic concept and phylogeny of Menispora is briefly discussed, and a key to the 11 species currently accepted in the genus is provided.  相似文献

Recruitment patterns were investigated for the African honey bee in the Okavango River Delta, Botswana. The waggle dances of two observation colonies maintained in the field were monitored and used to construct maps of daily recruitment activity. These maps revealed that the African colonies frequently adjusted the allocation of recruits among food patches, recruited for 16–17 different food sites/day over areas of 55–80 km 2 ,and concentrated the majority of recruitment within 1 km of the hives (median foraging distances for the two colonies were 295 and 563 m). In both colonies pollen foragers were more abundant than nectar foragers, and pollen sources indicated by waggle dancers were significantly closer to the hives than nectar sources. Compared to the recruitment patterns of temperate climate colonies, the African colonies had smaller recruitment areas, smaller mean recruitment distances, and a greater emphasis on pollen foraging. These differences may be related to the contrasting survival strategies followed by tropical-versus temperate-climate honey bees.  相似文献

A marine oomycete fungus was isolated from philozoma of the spiny lobster,Panulirus japonicus. The fungus exhibited slow growth, occasionally submerged, with a creamy white, raised moist colony. Hyphae were stout, arranged in radiating pattern, irregularly branched, 10–22 µm diam, occasionally separated by cross walls into subthalli. Thalli occasionally consisted of swollen features. Sporangia formed from the subthalli had 1–3 wavy or partly coiled discharge tubes at the terminal or subterminal area. Zoospores were pyriform or reniform, biflagellate, isokont and diplanetic. Encysted spores germinated as a hairlike filament with a globular enlarged tip in sterilized synthetic seawater, and directly as stout initial hypha in PYGS broth. This fungus was identified as belonging to the genusAtkinsiella and was designatedAtkinsiella panulirata sp. nov. The optimal temperature for the fungus was 25°C. Hyphal growth occurred in both sterilized synthetic seawater and NaCl in the range of 1.5–6.0% and 2.0–4.0%, respectively. The fungus could utilize all carbohydrates and derivatives tested as the carbon sources. From in vitro tests of five fungicides against the fungus malachite green was found to be the most effective.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of freeze-substituted (FS) hyphae ofLaetisaria arvalis is described and compared to that of similar hyphae preserved by conventional chemical fixation (CF). The outline of membrane-bound organelles as well as the plasma membrane was smooth in FS cells. In contrast, hyphae preserved by CF exhibited membrane profiles that were extremely irregular. Centers of presumed Golgi activity were best preserved by FS. Microvesicles, 27–45 nm diameter and hexagonal in transverse section, were observed most readily in FS cells. Filasomes (= microvesicles within a filamentous matrix) were only observed in FS cells. Apical vesicles, 70–120 nm diameter, associated with the centers of Golgi activity and within the Spitzenkörper region exhibited finely granular matrices in FS hyphae, whereas in CF hyphae the contents were coarsely fibrous and less electron-dense. Microvesicles were present at hyphal apices and regions of septa formation. Filasomes were also found at regions of septa formation as well as along lateral hyphal tip cell walls. Microvesicles, but not filasomes, were observed in membrane-bound vesicles (= multivesicular bodies) and in larger vacuoles. Filaments, 5.2–5.4 nm wide, were juxtaposed with centripetally developing septa. Cytoplasmic inclusions, 20–40 m in length, composed of bundles of 6.7–8.0 nm wide filaments were observed in both FS and CF hyphae.  相似文献

Summary The effect of growth ofShigella flexneri on various selective media on retention of congo red (CR) binding ability was determined to evaluate the effectiveness of isolation techniques regarding maintenance of the virulence plasmid. WhenS. flexneri was surface-plated onto selective agars and the resulting colonies replica plated onto CR plates, no white colonies indicative of loss of virulence were found despite repeated trials. However, whenS. flexneri was grown in liquid media (agar was removed from agar-containing media by centrifugation), white colonies were found upon plating onto CR plates. Most common selective media for shigellae produced fewer than 5–10 white colonies/1000 red colonies. However, growth in broth prepared from violet red bile agar, desoxycholate citrate agar, and SS agar gave more than 100 white colonies/1000 red colonies. Loss of CR binding was demonstrated whenS. flexneri was grown in broth containing tergitol 7, sodium dodecyl sulfate, bile salts #3, crystal violet, eosin y or methylen blue. However, concentrations of selective agents that led to loss of CR binding were much higher than those used in selective media. Results indicate that under usual conditions of isolation ofS. flexneri from food and clinical specimens, CR binding appears to be a relatively stable character with most selective media; however, use of violet red bile agar, desoxycholate citrate agar, and SS agar may lead to substantial loss of congo red binding indicating that the isolates may not be virulent.  相似文献
