The platypleurine cicadas have a wide distribution across Africa and southern Asia. We investigate endothermy as a thermoregulatory strategy in 11 South African species from five genera, with comparisons to the lone ectothermic platypleurine we found, in an attempt to ascertain any influence that habitat and/or body size have on the expression of endothermy in the platypleurine cicadas. Field measurements of body temperature (T(b)) show that these animals regulate T(b) through endogenous heat production. Heat production in the laboratory elevated T(b) to the same range as in animals active in the field. Maximum T(b) measured during calling activity when there was no access to solar radiation ranged from 13.2 degrees to 22.3 degrees C above ambient temperature in the five species measured. The mean T(b) during activity without access to solar radiation did not differ from the mean T(b) during diurnal activity. All platypleurines exhibit a unique behavior for cicadas while warming endogenously, a temperature-dependent telescoping pulsation of the abdomen that probably functions in ventilation. Platypleurines generally call from trunks and branches within the canopy and appear to rely on endothermy even when the sun is available to elevate T(b), in contrast to the facultative endothermy exhibited by New World endothermic species. The two exceptions to this generalization we found within the platypleurines are Platypleura wahlbergi and Albanycada albigera, which were the smallest species studied. The small size of P. wahlbergi appears to have altered their thermoregulatory strategy to one of facultative endothermy, whereby they use the sun when it is available to facilitate increases in T(b). Albanycada albigera is the only ectothermic platypleurine we found. The habitat and host plant association of A. albigera appear to have influenced the choice of ectothermy as a thermoregulatory strategy, as the species possesses the metabolic machinery to elevate to the T(b) range observed in the endothermic species. Therefore, size and habitat appear to influence the expression of thermoregulatory strategies in African platypleurine cicadas.  相似文献

Whether nectarivores or frugivores place selective pressure on the plants they feed on, in terms of nectar or fruit traits, is much debated. Globally sugar preferences, concentration preference and digestive ability of avian nectarivores have been extensively researched. In contrast, relatively little is known about mammalian nectarivores or frugivores in terms of these, particularly Old World species. Consequently effect of sugar type and concentration on food preference in Wahlberg's epauletted fruit bat Epomophorus wahlbergi was investigated. Pair-wise choice tests were conducted using equicaloric hexose and sucrose solutions at five different concentrations (5%-25%). It was expected that they would prefer hexose sugars as these are dominant in available indigenous fruits. However, bats preferred hexoses only when offered dilute (5%) concentrations. From 10% to 25% they showed a decrease in volume intake. Their body mass was generally higher and similar after feeding during the night with the exception of 5% concentration where the mean body mass decreased. When E. wahlbergi were offered a range of sucrose or hexose solutions (10%-25%) respectively, they showed no concentration preference in terms of total volume consumed, nor energy intake. These findings suggest that these fruit bats do not appear to act as a selective pressure on sugar composition in Old World fruit. In fruit bats with high energy requirements, dietary flexibility may be an advantage when faced with seasonal and unpredictable fruit availability.  相似文献

Acoustic behaviour was studied in the four species of Alebra Fieber leafhoppers found in Britain, which are morphologically the closest in the genus: A. wahlbergi (Boheman), A. coryli Le Quesne, A. albostriella (Fallen) and A. viridis Rey. One male call, of a diagnostic structure and produced in all behavioural contexts observed, was recorded for each species. No female acoustic signals were identified. Using male call pattern the three species of Alebra coexisting on Castanea sativa Miller in Kastanitsa, southern Greece, were identified as A. wahlbergi, A. albostriella and A. viridis. Individuals of A. viridis from Kastanitsa had more pronounced external pigmentation than those from Cardiff, South Wales. Discriminant and principal component analysis on variables of the male call of A. viridis distinguished the populations from Cardiff and Kastanitsa, but could not differentiate populations from the two British host plants, Quercus petraea and Q. cerris , in Cardiff. The British and Greek populations differed in the covariation as well as the duration of call components.
Castanea sativa was also recognized as a host plant of A. viridis in Cardiff. Individuals collected from C. saliva had external patterning in the same range of variation as that found for individuals from species of Quercus.
Present evidence strongly suggests that divergence in the acoustic species recognition signals of Alebra is occurring among geographic rather than sympatric host plant-associated populations.  相似文献

Uncovering the entire process of oviposition could enable the development of innovative pest control strategies. The European grapevine moth Lobesia botrana as well as the European grape berry moth Eupoecilia ambiguella are serious insect pests, which still threaten viticulture in many parts of the world. By creating an artificial semiochemical emitting surface, in form of a card, we tried to develop an egg‐monitoring tool for the oviposition of these two species in vineyards. The idea was to create a decision support system that facilitates timing and necessity of insecticide treatments. This article deals exclusively with the initial step towards the development of this tool: the influence of physical factors (colour, shape or texture) of a surface on the oviposition behaviour of L. botrana and E. ambiguella under laboratory conditions. The acceptance of different artificial substrates as oviposition site was analysed exclusive of volatile organic compounds emitted by a host plant. We investigated particular colours of the surface, which could be a visual stimulus to trigger the oviposition of both species. Apparently, the colour green, the texture of the material and the light conditions turned out to be highly important stimuli for oviposition.  相似文献

The reproductive attributes of commercially-produced Trichogramma platneri, T. minutum and T. pretiosum reared from eggs of both Ephestia kuehniella and Sitotroga cerealella were monitored at 25 C. The age-specific fecundity, longevity and progeny sex ratio and adult size were determined for individual females from all six combinations of Trichogramma and rearing host, using E. kuehniella as the experimental host. Rearing host had a significant influence on the lifetime fecundity, 3-day fecundity and longevity of all three Trichogramma species. In general, the performance of T. minutum and T. pretiosum was better when reared from S. cerealella, but that of T. platneri was superior when reared from E. kuehniella. The lifetime fecundity of the Trichogramma species was linearly related to longevity and the ranking between species was T. pretiosum > T. minutum > T. platneri. The age-specific pattern of oviposition for T. platneri was distinctly precocious, with 40% of its lifetime fecundity oviposited on the first day, in contrast to 17-24% for the other two species. Progeny sex ratio over the lifetime of the Trichogramma females was slightly male biased and differed significantly from 0.5 for T. minutum and T. platneri. Daily sex ratio for parasitoids reared from the most productive rearing host was female biased only for the first day of oviposition for T. platneri in contrast to the first 5-6 days of oviposition for the other two species. There was little evidence that any of the reproductive attributes of these Trichogramma species, reared from small host eggs, was dependent on the size of the adult females.  相似文献

1. Paropsine chrysomelids are eucalypt folivores for which it has been hypothesized that the availability of suitable age class foliage (i.e. young foliage) is a more important determinant of host use than the physical and/or chemical characteristics of foliage from different hosts. This prediction was tested by assessing the oviposition preference of Chrysophtharta bimaculata (Olivier) on excised branches of Eucalyptus regnans F. Mueller and E. nitens (Deane & Maiden) Maiden.
2. In cage trials, and as observed in the wild, beetles oviposited preferentially on E. regnans when the branches of both eucalypt species displayed the full range of foliar developmental classes, from immature to fully expanded. However, when the branches were pruned so that both species displayed only immature and expanding leaves, no difference in oviposition between the species occurred. Further, when the branches were pruned so that E. regnans displayed only fully expanded leaves and E. nitens displayed only immature and expanding leaves, females oviposited entirely on the latter species.
3. These results support and extend the hypothesis that C. bimaculata 's ovipositional preference is dictated more by leaf age class than by the tree species from which the leaves derive. In the discussion it is proposed that a eucalypt that initiates and expands leaves rapidly will be less preferred for oviposition than one that develops and expands leaves slowly, because of the smaller area of its canopy with less sclerophyllous foliage.  相似文献

Four Trichogramma species were recovered in the field from eggs of carob moth, Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The oviposition rates of Trichogramma oleae, Trichogramma cacoeciae, Trichogramma evanescens and Trichogramma bourarachae were compared when presented either E. ceratoniae or Ephestia kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). T. oleae and T. bourarachae did not parasitise either species of Lepidoptera.  相似文献

Abstract Damage caused by the eucalypt snout weevil Gonipterus scutellatus Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) (=G.gibberus Boisduval) was found on a greater proportion of F1Eucalyptus amygdalina Labill. X E. risdonii J. D. Hook, hybrid trees than either of the pure species, in a replicated field trial in south‐east Tasmania. A greater proportion of E. risdonii trees was also damaged than E. amygdalina trees. A study of the pattern of oviposition within the trial revealed no difference in oviposition by G. scutellatus between E. risdonii and E. amygdalina. Oviposition by G. scutellatus was significantly higher on the F1 and F2interspecific hybrids between these two eucalypt species compared with pure species crosses. There were no apparent differences in damage or oviposition levels between the F1 hybrids and the single large F2 progeny included in the trial. This finding provides little evidence that hybrid susceptibility is due to hybrid breakdown after the first generation. Rather, the evidence is consistent with the hypothesis that there may be different mechanisms of host defence operating in each species that are somehow diluted below a threshold level in the hybrids.  相似文献

Development duration, mortality and oviposition rate ofEuseius tularensis (Congdon),E. stipulatus (Athias-Henriot) andE. hibisci (Chant) were determined on three basic foods (pollen of iceplant, Pacific spider mite and citrus red mite) in the presence and absence of supplementary foods (honeydew from aphids and whiteflies). The studies were conducted in the laboratory at a constant temperature of 25°C. The mean duration of each development stage and total development time did not differe significantly between treatments with and without supplementary food, regardless of species and basic foods. The mortality of the immature stages of the threeEuseius species was generally higher in the absence of supplementary foods than in the presence of these foods, but differences were not significant (P=0.05). Oviposition rates generally were significantly higher in the presence of supplementary foods. The basic food was the most important factor affecting development, survival and oviposition rate; the most favorable food was pollen and the least favorable was citrus red mite. The development and oviposition rates differed somewhat among the threeEuseis, species on the same food or food combination.  相似文献

Most insects are dependent on chemical communication for activities such as mate finding or host location. Several plants, and especially orchids, mimic insect semiochemicals to attract insects for unrewarded pollination. Here, we present a new case of pheromone mimicry found in the terrestrial orchid Epipactis veratrifolia. Flowers are visited and pollinated by several species of aphidophagous hoverflies, the females of which also often lay eggs in the flowers. The oviposition behaviour of these hoverflies is mainly guided by aphid-derived kairomones. We show that the flowers produce α- and β-pinene, β-myrcene and β-phellandrene, and that these compounds attract and induce oviposition behaviour in female hoverflies. This floral odour profile is remarkably similar to the alarm pheromone released by several aphid species, such as Megoura viciae. We therefore suggest that E. veratrifolia mimics aphid alarm pheromones to attract hoverflies for pollination; this is the first time, to our knowledge, that such a case of mimicry has been demonstrated.  相似文献

For some phytophagous insects, egg maturation may be dependent on adult feeding. Accordingly, rates of egg maturation may be dependent on the quality and quantity of available food sources. In turn, oviposition behavior could be affected by diet quality via changes in egg load (number of mature eggs carried by a female). Experiments were conducted to determine whether adult feeding may affect oviposition behavior of the glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis. No-choice tests demonstrated that eggs accumulated in glassy-winged sharpshooter abdomens as time since last oviposition increased largely as a function of feeding plant species. In choice tests, glassy-winged sharpshooter females were observed most frequently on the plant species that imparted the greatest egg maturation rate in no-choice tests. Direct tests of the effects of egg load on glassy-winged sharpshooter oviposition behavior found that females were more likely to deposit eggs as egg load increased. Similarly, acceptance of a low-ranked oviposition plant species by female glassy-winged sharpshooters increased with egg load and time since last oviposition. The results indicate that adult feeding affected glassy-winged sharpshooter egg maturation, plant species varied in quality for providing nutrients for egg maturation, and egg load affected oviposition behavior. Thus, the quantity and quality of available feeding plant species may affect glassy-winged sharpshooter egg maturation rates, which in turn may affect the plant species female glassy-winged sharpshooters select for oviposition.  相似文献

A clutch of Emydura krefftii eggs hatched 20 days after oviposition, in contrast to the normal incubation period of 45–50 days for this species. This shortened incubation and the presence of stage 20–21 embryos at oviposition indicates facultative oviducal development in E krefftii.  相似文献

Abstract This study examined the factors used as cues for diapause termination by two Euploea species. Euploea core and E. sylvester were collected from two overwintering sites at Chillagoe, Queensland. Under tropical wet-season conditions, more butterflies terminated diapause (approximately 60%) than those kept under dry-season conditions (approximately 40%). However, 100% diapause termination occurred only when butterflies were kept under wet-season conditions and were fed with honey. For reproductive success, Euploea species need to terminate diapause rapidly to synchronise oviposition with fresh, rapid growth of their larval host plants, which often occurs after rain. The presence of rainfall, increased temperature and long days alone is not a fail-safe set of cues for this event. Our results suggest that food (as nectar), in conjunction with these combined environmental factors, provide Euploea species with a reliable signal that larval host resources are available for oviposition.  相似文献

Summary Two species ofEuphydryas butterflies were studied in California, USA, and showed considerable diet overlap at the species level. They utilize many of the same plant genera for oviposition. However,E. editha is less likely to use woody perennials than isE. chalcedona. Both butterfly species are known to specialize on different host plants in different populations, so species level divergence may not be a good predictor of community level divergence. Within five communities,E. editha andE. chalcedona showed no dietary overlap. A major component of the niche ofE. editha in one community was occupied byE. chalcedona in a second community, even though both butterfly species occupied both communities. These resource use patterns indicate that community level interactions may affect diet divergence. The degree to which divergence within communities is greater (or less) than expected from a species level comparison may be used to provide a measure of community organization. Equations are given in the Appendix for calculating overlap probabilities from presence/absence types of data; in this study, presence is oviposition on a particular plant species, absence is no oviposition on that plant species. Given the various assumptions of the model,E. editha andE. chalcedona show significant community level components of their dietary divergence in the areas studied. However, in some other communitiesE. editha andE. chalcedona do share host plant species. Therefore, we could not demonstrate community level divergence conclusively, nor has this been demonstrated for any other pair of insect herbivore species. We do not know whether this is because the phenomenon is truly rare or just very hard to demonstrate.  相似文献

Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) is a nuisance aquatic weed, exotic to North America. The freshwater weevil Euhrychiopsis lecontei (Dietz) is a potential control agent of Eurasian watermilfoil and is a fully submersed aquatic specialist herbivore. Its presumed original host is the native northern watermilfoil (Myriophyllum sibiricum Komarov). We conducted a set of oviposition experiments to reveal first and second oviposition preference of Euhrychiopsis lecontei when presented with seven macrophytes. We tested differences between source (lake) populations of weevils, differences in behavior between weevils reared on the exotic Eurasian watermilfoil and the native northern watermilfoil and between weevils in the presence and absence of their preferred hostplant. Oviposition assays confirmed that E. lecontei is a watermilfoil specialist. Out of the 207 females that laid eggs, only three oviposited on a non-watermilfoil plant, Megalodonta beckii. The weevils' degree of specificity was influenced by the watermilfoil species on which they were reared. Weevils reared on Eurasian watermilfoil tended to oviposit on Eurasian watermilfoil, spent more time on Eurasian watermilfoil than on other plants, and spent more time off plants and took longer to oviposit when Eurasian watermilfoil was removed. Weevils reared on northern watermilfoil did not exhibit a preference for either watermilfoil species in oviposition or in time allocation, although they oviposited on and spent significantly more time on watermilfoils than on other species. Rearing of the two populations on their complementary watermilfoil hostplant resulted in responses typical of the rearing plant, not the original host. These results show that although both weevil populations are watermilfoil specialists, Eurasian-reared weevils prefer Eurasian watermilfoil in general host attraction and oviposition, whereas northern-reared weevils do not. The results support the contention that E. lecontei may be a good biocontrol agent for Eurasian watermilfoil because of its high specificity. The results also suggest that the current host range expansion of the weevil to Eurasian watermilfoil has the potential to become a host shift due to the increased specificity. Herbivory in freshwater systems is not well studied, and the E. lecontei-M. spicatum relationship is a rare example of submersed freshwater specialist herbivore-host-plant interactions.  相似文献

The common grass yellow Eurema mandarina (Pieridae, Coliadinae) widely inhabits Japan, feeds on various fabaceous plants such as silktree (Albizia julibrissin) and uses d ‐pinitol, a cyclitol omnipresent in Fabaceae, as a primary oviposition stimulant. However, E. mandarina has a clear host preference within the Fabaceae; for example, white clover (Trifolium repens) is a nonhost despite containing d ‐pinitol. The present study aims to identify plant chemicals in white clover that inhibit oviposition of E. mandarina. Females lay very few eggs on T. repens foliage and plastic plant models treated with a methanolic extract of the foliage. The foliage extract is fractionated by successive extraction with chloroform, isobutanol and water. None of these fractions induce egg‐laying responses. The aqueous fraction is further separated into four subfractions (Tr‐3‐1 to Tr‐3‐4) by column chromatography. Among these subfractions, females show high egg‐laying responses to Tr‐3‐1, which is known to contain d ‐pinitol. Interestingly, Tr‐3‐2, when mixed with Tr‐3‐1, significantly decreases egg‐laying responses, indicating that it contains oviposition deterrents. Chemical analyses reveal that two cyanogenic glucosides, linamarin and lotaustralin, are the major constituents of Tr‐3‐2. Authentic linamarin does not elicit egg‐laying responses and significantly inhibits female oviposition when mixed with Tr‐3‐1 at the natural concentration. Although these cyanogenic glucosides are reported to synergistically induce oviposition of a coliadine species Colias erate on white clover, we conclude that linamarin acts as an oviposition deterrent for E. mandarina, restricts its host range and regulates their differential host acceptance.  相似文献

Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle, tree-of-heaven, is an invasive species native to Asia. It first was introduced into the United States in the 1700 s and now is distributed throughout much of North America. Mechanical and chemical controls are current suppression tactics, however, implementation is costly. A weevil, Eucryptorrhynchus brandti (Harold), was identified in China and imported for quarantine testing in 2004 as a potential biological control agent. Host specificity tests on adult feeding, larval development, and oviposition of this weevil were conducted from 2007 to 2011 on A. altissima and 29 nontarget species. Eucryptorrhynchus brandti adults fed significantly more on A. altissima foliage when compared with all test species. Range of means for feeding on A. altissima was 32.5-106.5 mm(2)/adult/d. In no-choice tests, Simarouba glauca DC, Leitneria floridana Chapm., and Citrus limon (L.) Burm. F., had feeding rates of only 10, 49, and 10%, respectively, compared with the level of feeding on A. altissima. The mean range of adult feeding by E. brandti on all other test species was <7% of feeding on A. altissima (0.0-3.3 ± 5.0 mm(2)/adult/d). In the no-choice larval inoculation tests, larval development only occurred in two of 10 L. floridana seedlings compared with seven of 10 A. altissima seedlings. In the no-choice oviposition tests, oviposition and subsequent larval development did not occur in L. floridiana, whereas all seven A. altissima seedlings supported oviposition and subsequent larval development. The weevil did not appear to be a threat to L. floridana or any other nontarget species tested. Therefore, we conclude that Eucryptorrhynchus brandti is highly host specific to A. altissima.
