The levels of DNA adducts in the hepatic tissue of the white sucker fish speciesCatostomus commersoni were determined by32P-postlabelling. The fish were caught at four sites: two sites near the city of Windsor (Québec, Canada) on the St. François River, a downstream tributary of the St. Lawrence River, and two sites in the St. Lawrence River itself, near the city of Montréal (Québec, Canada). The latter sites are known to be contaminated by many pollutants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Total adduct levels in all fish ranged from 25.1–178.0 adducts per 109 nucleotides. White sucker from the selected sites of the St. Lawrence River had a significantly higher mean level of DNA adducts than those of the St. François River (129.4 vs 56.8, respectively). These results suggest that the effluents of many heavy industries (e.g. from a Soderberg aluminium plant) flowing in the St. Lawrence River are more likely to produce genotoxic damage to fish than those released in one of its tributary, and mainly associated to the activities of a small town and a nearby pulp and paper mill.  相似文献

The exchange of zooplankton between two basins separated bya sill in the upper St. Lawrence estuary, Québec (Canada),was investigated using simultaneous times series of currentvelocity at various depths and zooplankton vertical samplesat an anchor station in the vicinity of a sill. Though strictlyaccurate estimates of organisms exchange could not be obtainedin this manner, it was possible to break down the exchange intoa mean flow mode, the magnitude and direction of which dependson the mean flow of water at the depth where the organisms areconcentrated, and a turbulent mode which is independent of waterexchange and varies considerably on a species basis. The secondmode of exchange is caused by differences in the concentrationof organisms between ebb and flood tides. Trophic cascade hypotheses for biological communities, linking predation by upper trophic levels to major features of ecological structure and dynamics at lower trophic levels, are widely subscribed and may influence conservation policy. Few such hypotheses have been evaluated for temporal or spatial generality. Previous studies of sea otter (Enhydra lutris) predation along the outer coast of North America suggest a pattern, often elevated to the status of paradigm, in which sea otter presence leads to reduced sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus spp.) biomass and rapid increases in abundance and diversity of annual algal species, followed by a decline in diversity as one or a few perennial algal species become dominant. Both sea otter predation and commercial sea urchin harvest are ecologically and economically important sources of urchin mortality in nearshore benthic systems in northern Washington marine waters. We recorded changes in density of macroalgae in San Juan Channel, a marine reserve in the physically protected inland waters of northern Washington, resulting from three levels of experimental urchin harvest: (1) simulated sea otter predation (monthly complete harvest of sea urchins), (2) simulated commercial urchin harvest (annual size-selective harvest of sea urchins), and (3) no harvest (control). The two experimental urchin removal treatments did not significantly increase the density of perennial (Agarum and Laminaria) or annual (Desmarestia, Costaria, Alaria and Nereocystis) species of macroalgae after 2 years, despite significant and persistent decreases in urchin densities. Our results suggest that other factors such as grazing by other invertebrates, the presence of dense Agarum stands, and recruitment frequency of macroalgae and macroinvertebrates may play a large role in influencing community structure in San Juan Channel and other physically protected marine waters within the range of sea otters. The loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) is a grassland bird species whose preferred nesting habitat in eastern Canada is pastureland. This species has been extirpated from much of its historical range in this region, and breeding habitat loss is suspected to be an important cause of this decline. We evaluated the availability of suitable breeding habitats in Québec using satellite imagery. Because this species no longer breeds in Québec, we established habitat selection criteria from known nesting sites in the adjacent province of Ontario, from analysis of a Landsat-TM satellite image, and applied these criteria to Landsat-TM images covering southern Québec. We developed regional landscape criteria in 100 km2 plots and patch indices criteria at the pasture level. Spatial analyses were conducted to characterize plots and pastures on the basis of pasture availability and spatial distribution. Pastures suitable for nesting loggerhead shrikes were those fulfilling patch criteria at the pasture level and located in plots fulfilling regional landscape criteria. Overall, 310 out of 1700 plots located in the historical breeding range of the loggerhead shrike in Québec fulfilled landscape criteria, supporting 3988 pastures that fulfilled patch criteria. More than 500 of these pastures were visited to validate their current status. The Outaouais region would be the most suitable region for nesting loggerhead shrikes in southern Québec, where suitable breeding habitat still remains because more than two-thirds of visited sites were still pastureland, hawthorns were well-distributed in the region, and pastureland fragmentation was lowest. We conclude that the availability of breeding habitat does not limit the establishment of a breeding population of loggerhead shrike in southern Québec, as we estimated that thousands of hectares of suitable habitat still remain in that province.  相似文献

We aimed to determine whether the copepod assemblages in lakes and ponds of northern Québec, Canada, were closer in composition to those found in southern Québec, or to those reported from the subarctic and arctic. Six calanoid and five cyclopoid species were identified from 37 ponds and lakes located in the region between 55° N and 59° N. Species diversity was generally low, ranging from 0 to 4 species per lake. Dominant species were Leptodiaptomus minutus and Acanthocyclops vernalis. The species assemblages showed high affinity with those found in forested regions of southern Québec. Exceptions were Leptodiaptomus tyrrelli, previously only recorded west of Hudson Bay, and Hesperodiaptomus arcticus, hitherto recorded north of 58° N. Relationships between the lakes, species, and environmental variables were explored using multivariate analysis. Lakes situated along the coast and on two offshore islands clustered together and were characterised by higher conductivity and pH than those lakes located further inland. Leptodiaptomus tyrrelli was common in these coastal lakes. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed statistically significant relationships between copepod distributions and conductivity, dissolved organic carbon and pH. These three variables accounted for 70% of the variation in the species' distribution.  相似文献

Summary Two populations of Echinochloa crus-galli (Québec, Mississippi) were grown at the Duke University Phytotron under 2 thermoperiods (28°/22°C, 21°/15°C day/night) and 2 CO2 regimes (350 and 675 l l-1). Thermostability, energy of activation (E a ),K m (PEP), K m (Mg++), and specific activity of phospho-enol-pyruvate carboxylase (PEPc) were analyzed in partially purified enzyme preparations of plants grown for 5 weeks. Thermostability of PEPc from extracts (in vitro) and leaves (in situ) was significantly higher in Mississippi plants. In vitro denaturation was not appreciably modified by thermal acclimation but CO2 enrichment elicited higher thermostability of PEPc. In situ thermostability was significantly higher than that of in vitro assays and was higher in Mississippi plants acclimated at 28°/22°C and in plants of the two ecotypes grown at 675 l l-1 CO2. E a (Q 10 30°/20°C) for PEPc was significantly lower in Québec plants as compared to Mississippi and no acclimatory shifts were observed. Significantly higher K m's (PEP) in 20°C assays were obtained for Mississippi as compared to Québec plants but values were similar at 30°C and 40°C assays. K m (Mg++) decreased at higher assay temperatures and were significantly lower for PEPc of the Québec ecotype. No significant changes in K m (Mg++) values were associated with modifications in temperature on CO2 regimes. PEPc activity measured at 30°C was significantly higher for Québec plants when measured on a leaf fresh weight, leaf area or protein basis but not on a chlorophyll basis. Significantly higher PEPc activity for both genotypes was observed for plants acclimated at 21°/15°C or grown at 675 l l-1 CO2. Net photosynthesis (Ps) and net assimilation rates (NAR) were higher in Québec plants and were enhanced by CO2 enrichment. NAR was higher in plants acclimated at low temperature, while an opposite trend was observed for Ps. PEPc activities were always in excess of the amounts required to support observed rates of CO2 assimilation.  相似文献

White sea urchins (Lytechinus anamesus Clark) attacked purple (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus Stimpson) and red (S. franciscanus Agassiz) sea urchins at Anacapa Island, California. Densities of white urchins were highest in the deep algal crust-dominated community where up to 6% of purple and 25% of red urchins were being attacked by white urchins. Up to 9% of Lytechinus anamesus in an area were actively eating stronglylocentrotids and usually, more than one white urchin was involved in the attack. In areas with low densities of white urchins, no strongylocentrotids were being attacked.After 36 h in the laboratory, there was no difference in the number of white urchins attacking injured or healthy purple urchins in each of the three experimental densities of white urchins. However, both injured and healthy urchins were attacked by more white urchins in high density. When given a choice between injured purple urchins or fresh kelp, white urchins overwhelmingly chose kelp. Data suggest that white urchins utilize other urchin species as an alternative source of food when more preferred food is absent, but will switch to preferred food should it become available.  相似文献

Summary Lamellar bodies are described in the non-ciliated epithelial bronchiolar cells of the normal mouse lung. They are constituted of smooth concentric membranes, with a cytoplasmic center. The role of green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis as a source of fecal particulate organic matter (POM) for the benthic nearshore ecosystems has been studied over a 3.5-month period. Three macroalgae were tested as food sources: Alaria esculenta, Laminaria longicruris and Ulvaria obscura. Urchins were fed ad libitum with either a single alga species or a mixture of all three algae. Consumption and defecation rates were determined as well as the feces/alga ratio in term of biomass and biochemical composition. Consumption rate increased exponentially with urchin size and also varied with alga species. In the single alga trial, consumption rate was higher for both brown algae (Laminaria and Alaria) compared to Ulvaria. Urchins feeding on the mixture of algae maintained their total ingestion rate (sum of the three algae) at the same level to those feeding on a single alga diet. The mixed algae trial showed that urchins clearly preferred Laminaria (72% of total ingestion) over Alaria (22%) and Ulvaria (6%). The defecation rate was tightly correlated with the food consumption rate and thus increased with urchin size. On average, 75% of the ingested algal biomass was released as fecal POM. The percentage of food defecated changed with alga species, with the highest value for Alaria (81%) and the lowest for Laminaria (67%). The percentage of food defecated by urchins feeding on the mixture of algae was generally comparable to those feeding on single alga diet. Biochemical composition (in soluble carbohydrates, proteins and lipids) of urchin fecal POM reflected that of the algae content. From 40% to 80% of macronutrients in algal food persisted in fecal matter. This proportion varied with the alga species and macronutrient considered. This study shows that the green sea urchin plays a significant role in the production of POM within nearshore benthic ecosystems, and it is a potentially nutritious food source for detritivores.  相似文献

The occurrence of the potentially ichthyotoxic dinoflagellateGyrodinium aureolum Hulburt is reported for the first time inthe Lower Estuary and Gulf of St Lawrence. Taxonomic identificationusing an iramunochemical tagging method suggests a close taxonomicproximity between the species found in the St Lawrence and G.aureolumpresent in European waters. In 1993, G.aureolum was observedalong the entire coast of Quebec and in offshore waters of theGulf of St Lawrence. At the coastal stations, G.aureolum showedlarge week-to-week variations, but higher densities were observedduring late August and early September. Bloom concentrations(106 cells 1–1) were only observed in the GaspéCurrent at Mont-Louis, on the north coast of the Gaspd peninsula.In the central part of the Gulf, G.aureolum was concentratedin the upper 5 m of the stations directly influenced by thefreshwater run-off of the St Lawrence Estuary. Results fromprincipal component analysis indicate that G.aureolum favorsenvironments with high nitrogen recycling activity.  相似文献

Results are presented which prioritize areas for potential protection in Québec on the basis of biodiversity considerations. These results are relevant to the ongoing public discussion in Québec about designating new parks and refuges so that the province may fulfil its obligations to Canada's Endangered Spaces Campaign. The prioritization algorithm used in this analysis is based on rarity and complementarity. It attempts to sample biodiversity in as area-efficient a way as possible. The biodiversity surrogates used here comprise a subset of 743 species for which data on spatial distributions are publicly available; the analysis begins with 394 species at risk. It is shown that: (i) the existing network of protected areas in Québec does a poor job of protecting these biodiversity surrogates; (ii) adding adjacent areas to this network will not be the optimal way of protecting these biodiversity surrogates; (iii) many of the areas that have highest priority are in southern Québec, which has a high human population density; (iv) because of (iii), designating parks may not be economically or sociologically feasible and more adaptive alternative conservation plans will have to be devised; (v) coastal areas, riparian habitats, and other wetlands should have high priority for protection but are currently very inadequately represented in the reserve network; (vi) there is some reason for concern about the clear-cut logging of boreal forests in northern Québec; and (vii) the islands, Île d'Anticosti and the Îles-de-la-Madeleine, emerge as being of very significant conservation value and plans for the protection of areas on them should be an immediate goal for biodiversity conservation in Québec.  相似文献

The gonad condition of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermediuscollected in August 1997 at two stations in Peter the Great Bay was examined. One of the stations was located in a polluted area (Alekseev Bight, Popov Island) and the other, in a relatively clean area (the Verkhovskii Islands). The results were compared with analogous data for 1984, 1985, and 1989. In 1997, the gonad condition of sea urchins inhabiting the two areas differed significantly. The mean value of the gonad index (GI) for sea urchins from Alekseev Bight was less than half and the maturity index was about twice that of sea urchins from the Verkhovskii Islands. The GI of sea urchins from Alekseev Bight decreased by a factor of 1.5 between 1984 and 1997. Pronounced histopathological changes were found in sea urchin gonads at this station: granular and hydropic dystrophy of oocytes, resorption and a sharp decrease in the number of gametes (in about 20% of the sea urchins, hardly any gametes were found in the gonads), changes in the morphology of accessory cells (hypertrophy, atrophy, and necrosis), and accumulation of lipofuscin in the cytoplasm of accessory cells and oocytes, in the hemal sinuses and mesentery. The suppressed gonad condition of the sea urchin S. intermediusin Alekseev Bight may be a consequence of the unfavorable environmental situation that formed in the bight in the 1980s–1990s. The main negative factor is anthropogenic pollution of Amurskii Bay.  相似文献

Summary Mutations in the lipoprotein lipase (LPL) gene, leading to partial or total inactivation of the enzyme, result in a hereditary clinical syndrome called familial LPL deficiency. The French Canadian population, which is primarily and historically located in the province of Québec, has the highest worldwide frequency of LPL-deficient patients. We have analyzed the prevalence, spatial distribution, and genealogy in the Québec population of a LPL gene mutation, M-207 (P207L in conventional notation), which changes the amino acid proline to leucine in position 207 of the LPL protein and inactivates the enzyme. Our results show that M-207 is the most prevalent LPL gene mutation among French Canadians and accounts for the largest proportion of LPL-deficient patients in this population. Genealogical reconstruction of French Canadian LPL-deficient patients point to 16 founders of M-207, all of whom migrated to Québec in the early seventeenth century from the north-western part of France, especially from the region of Perche. Most of the carriers of M-207 are, at present, found in the Charlevoix, Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean regions of eastern Québec. On the basis of the number of homozygote M-207 LPL-deficient patients so far identified, we estimate that there are at least 31,000 carriers of this mutation in the province of Québec. This constitutes a large pool of individuals at risk for atherosclerosis and other lipid-related diseases, since LPL deficiency is considered to be a significant contributing factor in the etiology and development of these diseases.  相似文献

In most organisms, specific structures are responsible for detecting light patterns and vision. Several species of sea urchins appear to have a diffuse photoreceptor system that enables them to detect light and in some cases objects. The presence of extraocular vision was investigated on a sea urchin common in northern Oman, Diadema setosum. Urchins from 8- to 10-m deep coral communities were used in controlled experiments that quantified the orientation response of the urchins to various visual cues: size, contrast and colour of circular targets simulating urchins’ outlines. Urchins responded to black discs down to 11° initial visual angle but not to smaller discs. The minimum grey-scale value triggering a response was between 50 and 37% black. Urchins responded to red targets but not to green or blue ones. An average angular distance between spines of 5.3° suggested a visual acuity of about 10.6°. D. setosum thus showed extraocular vision allowing them to detect objects of different sizes, contrasts and to some extent colour, supporting the hypothesis that the whole sea urchin’s body acts as a single large compound eye.  相似文献

Summary The sea urchin, Centrostephanus coronatus, exhibits a relatively broad diet. Evidence presented in this paper suggests that evolution of dietary breadth is favored by two mechanisms. First, individual urchins occur in habitat types that support somewhat different foods. Urchins consume principally the most preferred food where it is common but are forced to eat other food types where it is rare. Second, overgrazing by individual urchins reduces the local abundance of the most preferred food, thereby forcing them to add less preferred items to their diet. Previous work indicates that the escape behavior of Centrostephanus from its fish predator, Pimelometopon pulchrum, results in different individuals being exposed to different foods and in reduction of the size of urchin grazing ranges to the point that overgrazing occurs. Hence, by the two mechanisms discussed in this paper, the presence of the fish predator favors the broad diet of its sea urchin prey.  相似文献

Summary Phosphoglucomutase1 (PGM1) polymorphism was studied in a French-Canadian population of Québec city, Canada by means of a low voltage (max 500 V) isoelectric focusing (IEF) procedure on vertical polyacrylamide gel slabs. Frequencies of the four common PGM1 genes estimated from the phenotype distribution in 308 unrelated individuals were PGM 1 1+ , 0.61 (±0.02); PGM 1 1- , 0.13 (±0.01); PGM 1 1+ , 0.61 (±0.02); PGM 1 1- , 0.18 (±0.02); and PGM 1 1+ , 0.61 (±0.02); PGM 1 1- , 0.08 (±0.01). The segregation patterns observed in 154 families, which included 31 different mating types and 353 children, confirmed a Mendelian inheritance of four autosomal genes. The distribution of the PGM1 phenotypes observed or expected in a Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was compared with that of other populations. A significant (P<0.001) difference was found between the Québec population and a Black population from Keneba, Gambia, West-Africa.  相似文献

Temporally consistent individual differences in behavior impact many ecological processes. We simultaneously examined the effects of individual variation in prey activity level, covering behavior, and body size on prey survival with predators using an urchin–lobster system. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that slow‐moving purple sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) and urchins who deploy extensive substrate (pebbles and stones) covering behavior will out‐survive active urchins that deploy little to no covering behavior when pitted against a predator, the California spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus). We evaluated this hypothesis by first confirming whether individual urchins exhibit temporally consistent differences in activity level and covering behavior, which they did. Next, we placed groups of four urchins in mesocosms with single lobster and monitored urchin survival for 108 hr. High activity level was negatively associated with survival, whereas urchin size and covering behavior independently did not influence survival. The negative effect of urchin activity level on urchin survival was strong for smaller urchins and weaker for large urchins. Taken together, these results suggest that purple urchin activity level and size jointly determine their susceptibility to predation by lobsters. This is potentially of great interest, because predation by recovering lobster populations could alter the stability of kelp forests by culling specific phenotypes, like foraging phenotypes, from urchin populations.  相似文献

Stability properties of the barren state of a kelp forest-sea urchin system were studied in northern Norway. The ability of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis to maintain high population densities and recover from perturbations, and the succession of kelp forest revegetation, were studied experimentally by reducing the sea urchin density on a barren skerry. Additional information was obtained from community changes following a natural, but patchy, sea urchin mortality that varied between sites. On the barren grounds, high sea urchin densities (30 50 per m2) is maintained by annual recruitment. Severe reductions of sea urchin densities initiated luxuriant kelp growth, while more moderate reductions allowed establishment of opportunistic algae (during spring and early summer), but no kelps. Succession of algal growth, after the severe decline in sea urchin densities, followed a predictable pattern. At first the substrate was colonized by filamentous algae, but within few weeks they were outcompeted by the fast growing kelp Laminaria saccharina. After 3–4 years of the removal experiment, the slower-growing, long-lived kelp L. hyperborea became increasingly dominant. Increased food availability after reduction in sea urchin density led to increased individual growth of the remaining sea urchins. However, the population density did not increase, neither from recruitment nor immigration from adjacent areas with high sea urchin densities. Possibly, early establishment of a dense kelp stand, may represent a breakpoint in the ability of sea urchins to reestablish a barren state. The ability of L. saccharina quickly to invade and monopolize an area may have both positive and negative effects on the succession towards the climax L. hyperborea kelp forest. Competitive interactions may slow the process, but development of a dense stand of L. saccharina will also reduce grazing risk on scattered recruits of the more slowly growing L. hyperborea.  相似文献

Many sea urchin genera exhibit cryptic covering behaviors. One such behavior has been documented in the sea urchin Tripneustes gratilla, and previous studies have theorized that this behavior serves as protection from UV radiation. However, other hypotheses have been presented such as protection from predators or added weight to help T. gratilla resist strong currents. A field study was conducted in October-November 2015 in Moorea, French Polynesia to assess urchin covering behavior in natural habitats. The study found that urchins partially underneath rocks covered more, and with more algae, than urchins totally underneath rocks. To test if this behavior was driven by light intensity, a series of 30-minute experimental trials were run on 10 individuals in bright and dim conditions. Individuals were given red and clear plastic, and percent cover of each was recorded. These tests were repeated once fifty percent of spines had been removed from the urchin, in order to determine whether spine loss affects T. gratilla covering behavior. The study found that urchins had a distinct preference for cover that best protects them from UV radiation. Spine loss did not significantly affect urchin ability to cover, and urchins with removed spines still preferred opaque cover. Additionally, covering behavior was mapped onto a phylogeny of echinoderms to determine how it might have evolved. Understanding urchin covering behavior more fully is a step towards an understanding of the evolution of cryptic behavior across species.  相似文献
