Juveniles of African catfish, C. gariepinus were fed with different biowastes procured from various stations viz., slaughter houses, poultry sheds, fish markets, hotel kitchens and ware houses. Maximum growth was obtained in the fishes fed with poultry wastes and minimum in the fishes fed with warehouse waste. Total protein, fat, and dry matter contents were high in poultry and butcher wastes fed fishes. Culture of catfishes in controlled conditions by feeding biowaste is an alternative step to control the prevailing wide spreading culture practices of African catfish, which poses a threat to inland aquatic biodiversity. The present approach is ideal for recycling biowastes to fish protein and to keep our environment clean and hygienic.  相似文献

In the present work, the destructive effects of the 4-nonylphenol on one of the most economically important Nile fishes, namely African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) were studied. Apoptosis, erythrocytes alterations, micronucleus test and blood parameters count were used as biological indicators to detect those effects. After exposure to sublethal concentrations of 4-nonylphenol (0, 0.05, 0.08 and 0.1 mg/l), apoptotic red blood cells with many malformations and micronucleated erythrocytes were recorded. Decrease in the blood parameters such as red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin (Hb), package cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), platelets, white blood cells (WBCs), lymphocytes, basophils, monocytes and increase in mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), neutrophils, eosinophils indicated the negative effects of 4-nonylphenol. It was concluded that, the 4-nonylphenol caused genotoxicity in erythrocytes with many malformations in shape and number indicated with other blood parameters.  相似文献

Indiscriminate discharge of pharmaceutical waste into the aquatic ecosystem may pose serious health challenges to aquatic biota. The effect of acute exposure to ibuprofen was evaluated using changes in behaviour and haematological parameters under static bio-assay method in Clarias gariepinus. Test specimens were exposed to acute concentrations of ibuprofen (0.28, 0.33, 0.38, 0.43 and 0.48 mg l?1) for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h durations respectively. Behavioural and phenotypic changes were observed in surviving fish. There were significant (p < 0.05) concentration and duration-dependent increases in erythrocyte (RBC), haemoglobin (Hb), pack cell volume (PCV) and leukocytes (WBC) in treated fish compared to the control. Insignificant decreases (p > 0.05) in mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were observed in treated fish compared to the control. Ibuprofen elicited dose and duration- dependent decrease in neutrophil counts with the decreases being significant (p < 0.05) in the higher doses of 0.43 and 0.48 mg l?1. Ibuprofen did not elicit any significant changes in monocytes, basophils and eosinophils. Changes observed in this study showed that ibuprofen negatively affected the health of the fish and we recommend that discharge of ibuprofen into the aquatic environment should be monitored and controlled.  相似文献

Three ontogenetic stages of the African catfish Clarias gariepinus have been used to describe and discuss the ontogeny of the hyoid musculature. During ontogeny, an asynchrony in the development of the muscles is observed: the intermandibularis and protractor hyoidei are the first to develop and which bear their insertions, followed by the hyohyoideus inferior and the sternohyoideus. The hyohyoideus abductor and adductor muscles are the last of the hyoid muscles to develop. In the juvenile stage (136.2 mm SL specimen), the intermandibularis is still present. The protractor hyoidei is well developed, as it may play an important role in the opening of the mouth, the elevation of the hyoid bars and, as a typical catfish feature, the displacement of the mandibular barbels. The protractor hyoidei arises as three pairs of muscle bundles (a pars ventralis, a pars lateralis and a pars dorsalis), of which the pars ventralis and the pars lateralis become fused to each other. This fusion gives rise to four different fields of superficial fibres for the manipulation of the mandibular barbels. The pars dorsalis, with its tendinous insertion, may be of more importance for mouth opening and/ or hyoid elevation. The hyohyoid muscle is well differentiated into an inferior, abductor and adductor muscles, acting on the hyoid bars, the branchiostegal rays and the opercular bone.  相似文献

The skin and muscle chemical comparisons from normal and golden coloured African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus , of two different size (± 360 and ± 1500 g live mass) groups are reported. The skin of the golden strain is shown to be that of an albino that contains no melanin. Size has a stronger influence than strain on the proximate, fatty acid, amino acid and mineral profiles of both the skin and muscle. For both strains, the larger size class had statistically (P > 0.05) lower muscle moisture and higher total lipid content than the smaller size class. There was no significant difference in the muscle protein content (16.7–17.6% wet mass basis) between and within the strains and size classes. The skin has higher concentrations of glycine, proline and hydroxyproline than the muscle. The major fatty acids in both the skin and muscle were palmitic (> 23%) and oleic (>28%). Of the muscle minerals, potassium was significantly (P > 0.05) higher in the larger size class for both strains. The lack of any tangible difference in the muscle chemical composition of both strains therefore makes the golden catfish strain more attractive for the fresh fish consumer.  相似文献

Embryonic development of Clarias gariepinus was studied from oocyte activation to the end of endogenous feeding (164 h post‐fertilization, 164 h‐PF). The ontogeny of the eyes, the ear, the heart, the digestive tract and the notochord were described histologically: (i) eyes were not pigmented at hatching (40 h‐PF) and the anlage of the retina was observed at 96 h‐PF. At 164 h‐PF, the pigmented epithelium was distinguished as a single layer of cubical cells and the outer nuclear layer was composed of cones; (ii) the inner ear was oval‐shaped and two otoliths and a sensory epithelium were differentiated at hatching. Three semicircular canals with rudimentary cristae developed until 96 h‐PF, leading to a fully developed auditory vesicle at 120 h‐PF; (iii) at 40 h‐PF, a beating heart appeared as a thin‐walled tube and at 72 h‐PF no blood elements were recorded in the two‐chambered heart. The four compartments (bulbus arteriosus, ventricle, atrium, sinus venosus) and mature blood elements were found only at 144 h‐PF; (iv) the hatchlings possessed an undifferentiated digestive system, and differentiation of a buccal cavity, oesophagus and intestine was only recorded 96 h‐PF. The connection between the oesophagus and the intestine and the anus opened at 144 h‐PF; (v) the notochord in newly hatched embryos was composed of vacuolated cells and a peripheral layer of notochordal epithelium inside a fibrous sheath. Subsequently, vacuolated cells proliferated and notochordal epithelium changed from cubical to squamous cells. Eye differentiation was concomitant with first feeding, thus suggesting a key role of visual senses in feeding behaviour.  相似文献

The food and feeding habits of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) were studied in Lake Koka, Ethiopia, in May 2011 (dry month) and September 2011 (wet month). Three hundred and thirty eight nonempty stomach samples were analysed using frequency of occurrence and volumetric methods of analysis. Detritus, insects, macrophytes, zooplankton and fish were the dominant food categories by occurrence, and they occurred in 79.6%, 63.6%, 63.0%, 56.2% and 15.4% of the stomachs, respectively. Volumetrically, the above food items comprised 24.3%, 14.1%, 14.5%, 19.3% and 21.8% of the total volume of food categories. Phytoplankton and gastropods were of low importance, and they occurred in 28.7% and 8.6% of the stomachs, respectively. Their volumetric contributions were 3.2% and 2.8% of the total volume of food categories. During the dry month, fish, zooplankton, insects and detritus were important food categories, while during the wet month detritus, macrophytes, insects and gastropods were important. Smaller catfish diets were dominated by detritus, macrophytes and insects, whereas larger catfish shifted to fish and zooplankton. Based on the results, C. gariepinus was found to be omnivorous in its feeding habits in Lake Koka.  相似文献

Some aspects of the physiology and biochemistry of the African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822), were studied along with an array of physicochemical characteristics of the water in Lake Maryût, Egypt. Data were compared to those of a reference fish hatchery. At least 11 of the conventional water pollutants (Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Hg, Ni, Zn, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand and ammonia nitrogen) were elevated in the most polluted main basin of the lake. In turn, serologic analysis of the indigenous catfish C. gariepinus pointed at functional impairment of the liver, heart and kidney as reflected by the elevated activities of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, cholinesterase, glucose and creatinine. Reduced nucleic acid measurements [the ratio RNA/DNA and the relative RNA content (r)] indicated diminished protein synthesis and impaired growth in polluted fish. In some instances, glucose and nucleic acid measures were elevated in favour of fish from moderately polluted basins of the lake rather than in reference fish. Fish seemed to profit from the typical geographical habitat in the lake, regardless of the virtual contamination there, versus reference fish that seemed to suffer congestion stress and food competition in the confined and overcrowded commercial pond.  相似文献

To study the growth response of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) to the diets containing two protein (30 and 35%) and two lipid levels (12 and 18%) in a closed recirculatory system for 60 days, fish were fed to satiation twice daily. The experiment was carried out in triplicate groups. Fortnightly sampling of fish and water samples was carried out. The best result in terms of growth was obtained with the diet containing 34.62% protein and 12.12% lipid. The protein to lipid ratio was 18.57 in the diet that gave best percentage weight gain. However best survival, food conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio were recorded in the diet containing 29.86% protein and 18.08% lipid.  相似文献

Determining the genetic characteristics of natural fish stocks is useful for conservation and aquaculture programs. For African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, genetic characterization could help identify populations suitable as brood stock for culture, and those in need of conservation. This study determined the genetic diversity, population structure, and demographic history of C. gariepinus from Lakes Victoria (LV), Kenyatta (LKE), Kamnarok (LKA), and Rivers Nyando (NR), Tana (TR) and Sosiani (SR) in Kenya. Using 128 DNA sequences of D-loop control region, 34 haplotypes were recovered, of which 79.4% were singletons. Only 7 haplotypes were shared between sites, implying little gene flow between sites. Number of haplotypes was highest in LKE and NR populations and lowest in SR. Haplotype diversity was highest in LV, and lowest in SR, while, nucleotide diversity was highest in LKA and lowest in LV. Phylogenetic analyses revealed five clusters: Lakes Victoria, Kamnarok and Kenyatta, and Rivers Tana and Nyando, from both maximum likelihood tree and minimum spanning network. This, together with significant F ST values among the sites imply population differentiation. Mismatch distributions were multi-modal in LKA, LKE, NR and TR, signifying demographic equilibria. Neutrality tests Tajima`s D values for the sampled populations were negative and significantly different, suggesting stable populations. These results show the existence of genetically distinct populations of C. gariepinus that require spatially explicit management actions such as reducing fishing pressure, pollution, minimizing habitat destruction and fragmentation for sustainable utilisation of stocks.  相似文献

In a study aimed to determine the histopathology, component parasite communities and level of selected heavy metals, African catfish Clarias gariepinus from three rivers in Zimbabwe (Gwebi, Manyame and Mukuvisi) were analysed for heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the gills, liver, kidney and muscles. The histopathology of these tissues was assessed by microscopic examination of stained thin sections. Metazoan parasite diversity and species composition in fish along different sites of the rivers were determined and compared. Levels of Cd, Fe, Pb and Zn were lowest in the Gwebi, Cr and Cu in the Manyame, and Ni in the Mukuvisi River. There were significant differences (P < 0.5) in concentration of iron and nickel in the gill and liver tissues of fish among the three rivers while significant differences in concentration of iron and lead were observed in muscle tissue. Gill chronic inflammation and ossification were significantly different (P < 0.5) in fish from among the three rivers. Chronic inflammation, hemosiderin deposits and bile accumulation in the liver were also significantly different (P < 0.5) among the three rivers and so was the extent of chronic inflammation in the kidney tissue. Lamellar fusion was slightly more present in gills of catfish from the Mukuvisi than the Gwebi River. The parasite community of C. gariepinus comprised three monogenean, two cestode and three nematode species. The least polluted Gwebi River had the highest parasite community diversity while the most polluted Mukuvisi River had the lowest diversity. Fish parasite community structure is thus a potential indicator of river pollution, while heavy metal pollution is a potential threat to fish and human health in the system.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) immunoreactivity was studied in the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, by means of immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase techniques. Immunoreactive neurons were found throughout the preoptic nucleus (NPO). However, only a portion of the secretory perikarya in the NPO showed a positive reaction by use of an anti-LHRH serum. Numerous immunoreactive fibres were found to enter the pituitary and to terminate in its proximal pars distalis, the site of concentration of the gonadotropic cells. Since GnRH is present in the brain and pituitary of the African catfish, the lack of spontaneous ovulation in captivity is apparently due to an insufficient release of GnRH.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of partial gonadectomy on reproductive performance of male Clarias gariepinus broodstock. Testes from C. gariepinus broodstock were surgically removed; 25% of the testes (Treatment 1), 50% of the testes (Treatment 2), 75% of the testes (Treatment 3), and removal of the sperm from the testes sac using syringe after the abdominal cavity had been cut open (Treatment 4) {control}. The incisions were sutured and the fish kept inside separate concrete tanks for 4 mo. The incisions closed up within 8 to 9 wk of surgery. The postsurgical survival of C. gariepinus was 100%, indicating the efficiency of the surgical procedure. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in sperm production, percentage fertilization, hatchability and survival of the larvae using sperm derived from regenerated testes of the partially gonadectomized C. gariepinus and nongonadectomized C. gariepinus. It also reveals that partial gonadectomy could not alter the quality of sperm production of C. gariepinus. Sperm derived from regenerated testes performed effectively for fertilization of eggs. Based on the results of this study, the removal of 75% of testes during partial gonadectomy proved to be the best as the total number of spermatozoa was more than that of other methods and the sperm was able to fertilize more eggs. Hence the removal of 75% of testis during partial gonadectomy of C. gariepinus is recommended based on the results of this study.  相似文献

Spontaneous testicular tumors, seminoma, were noticed in four male hybrid catfish (C. batrachus female x C. gariepinus male) after the age of two years. The hybrids showed massive abdominal swelling with catchectic body and free lobulated, encapsulated tumors (> 325 g) within the serosanguinous fluid-filled peritoneal cavities. The tumor cells were large and polyhedral with prominent centrally located nuclei. Other vital organs appeared normal. It seems to be the first report of seminoma in hybrid catfish and possibly of genetic cause.  相似文献

Male-specific DNA markers from African catfish (Clarias gariepinus)   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
We searched for sex-specific DNA sequences in the male and female genomes of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) by comparative random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assays performed on pooled DNA samples. Two sex-linked RAPD markers were identified from the male DNA pool and confirmed on individual samples, showing good agreement with phenotypic sex. Both markers were isolated, cloned and characterized. The first marker (CgaY1) was nearly 2.6 kb long, while the length of second one (CgaY2) was 458 bp. Southern blot analysis with a CgaY1 probe showed strong hybridizing fragments only in males and not in females under stringent conditions, indicating the presence of multiple copies of CgaY1 in the male genome. When tested by zoo blot on the genomes of two closely related species from the Clariidae family, CgaY1 hybridized to the DNA of Heterobranchus longifilis and generated a faint male-specific band at low stringency. CgaY2 produced similar hybridization pattern in both sexes of C. gariepinus, C. macrocephalus and H. longifilis. Specific primers were designed to the sequences and the markers were amplified in multiplex PCR reactions together with a control band common to all individuals. This allowed for rapid, molecular sexing of the species on the basis of a simple three band (male) versus one band (female) pattern. According to our knowledge these are the first sex-specific DNA markers isolated from a siluroid fish species. The ontogeny of the bony skull of the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, is studied from initial ossification until a complete skull is formed. The ossification sequence in C. gariepinus seems to be related to the functional demands that arise in a developing larva. Early ossification of the opercular bone coincides with the initiation of opercular skin movements. Early ossifications involve several dentulous bones, formed shortly before the transition phase from endogenous to exogenous feeding. The enlarging branchiostegal membrane becomes supported by the gradual adding of branchiostegal rays. Parasphenoid ossification may be related to protection of the brain during prey transport, whereas the several hyoid bones, including the parurohyal, are formed in relation to the increasing loads exerted onto the tendons of the sternohyoideus and consequently onto the hyoid bar. Overall skull reinforcement occurs almost simultaneously, with a whole set of perichondral bones arising especially at places of high mechanical load. The suspensorium becomes protected against dislocation in an anteroposterior direction through a ligamentous connection, which even becomes partially ossified, forming the sesamoid entopterygoid. Later, the cranial lateral-line system becomes enclosed by a set of gutters, which close, frequently becoming plate-like later in ontogeny. The brain also becomes covered dorsally. Additional dentition (prevomeral tooth plates) formation seems to coincide with formation of the opercular four-bar system, as well as with the time the digestive system becomes completely functional. Dry diets containing either fish meal (C-FM) or dried fermented fish silage and soybean meal blend (1:1, ww−1) (C-FS) as the sole protein source, were fed to triplicate groups of juvenile Clarias gariepinus (10.8 ± 0.3 g) at 5% body weight per day for 70 days. Catfish fed the C-FS diet showed reduced (P < 0.05) growth rate, feed conversion, protein efficiency and digestibility. Lower amounts of available amino acids in the C-FS diet resulted in inferior nutritive value for catfish growth than in the C-FM diet. Postprandial changes in plasma amino acids showed similar patterns in both diet treatments, but the maximal mean levels attained for the C-FS diet were correspondingly lower and occurred earlier than with the C-FM diet. There were no effects of feeding C-FS diet on the hepatosomatic index but carcass analysis showed that body protein deposition was lower (P < 0.05). Differences in haematocrit, haemoglobin content and liver histology were demonstrated but were not pathological. Lower digestible energy of C-FS diet also contributed to the poor performance of catfish in this treatment. Results of this study indicate that C. gariepinus cannot metabolize protein from co-dried fish silage as efficiently as fish meal protein when used as the sole dietary protein.  相似文献
