Locomotor activity rhythm of Orchestia montagui was investigated under constant darkness in a population collected in spring from the supralittoral zone of Bizerte lagoon (northern region of Tunisia) at Menzel Jmil in spring. This rhythm was recorded in individual and groups of animal by infrared actography every 20 min by multichannel data loggers, at a constant temperature of 18 ± 0.5 °C. According to double-plotted actograms, wave forms and periodogram analysis, results revealed different locomotor pattern. However, locomotor activity rhythm of males was more stable than females. Furthermore, the mortality was statistically higher in unmixed groups than in mixed groups.  相似文献

In constant conditions and continuous darkness, the burrowing species Nebalia bipes (Fabricius) exhibits a clear circadian rhythm of emergence from the substratum and of swimming activity. The rhythm, in which activity occurs during the ‘expected night’, is obvious in both males and females and can remain overt for several weeks.The ‘free-running period’, although variable, is ≈ 24 h 20 min in a calm environment and at 18 °C. During the first day of the experiments, the swimming activity of freshly collected animals increases abruptly at dusk and then decreases gradually towards dawn. It has been possible to change the phase of the rhythm by subjecting the animals to a reversed LD schedule.The synchronization seems to result from the high photonegativity of Nebalia in normal daylight. The results of some experiments carried out with young juvenile animals suggests that the synchronization may possibly take place during the incubation period.  相似文献

Understanding circadian foraging rhythms activity of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) foragers at different temperatures is an important step towards developing control measures in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. In this study, the circadian foraging rhythm activities of S. invicta foragersat different temperature were investigated under laboratory and field conditions. Results indicated that the foraging activity increased after sunrise, and maximum foraging occurred at 14:00 (foraging rate was 69.22 ± 0.57 and 72.58 ± 1.15 foragers/min in the first and second year, respectively) in the tea fields of Guangzhou during autumn. Furthermore, foragers demonstrated circadian rhythms and exhibited a unimodal after 24 h. A significant correlation was found between foraging activity and temperature. S. invicta colonies were active at moderate soil temperatures (approximately 26.65 °C to 29.24 °C). The preferred temperature of the colonies was 26 °C, followed by 22 °C and 18 °C in the laboratory. The individual S. invicta activity was maximum at 17:00 (18.67 ± 1.66 times /10 min) and minimum at 5:00 (8.33 ± 2.51 times/10 min) at 26 °C. The fluctuating temperature had a significant impact on individual locomotor activity (r = 0.8979, P < 0.01) but did not alter the rhythm activity. Our results demonstrated that temperature might play an important role in circadian foraging rhythms activity of S. invicta. These results may have implications for the development of more effective fire ant management strategies.  相似文献

Freshly collected individuals of Orchestia gammarellus from the supralittoral zone of Ghar El Melh lagoon (Northern of Tunisia) were housed in spring in a controlled-environment cabinet. Locomotor activity rhythm of this species was recorded in spring, at a constant temperature of 18 ± 0.5 °C. In the first experiment, juveniles and adults specimens were kept under light-dark cycle in phase with the natural diel cycle. In the two other experiments (males/females and mixed/unmixed groups), individuals of O. gammarellus were maintained under constant darkness. According to double-plotted actograms, waveforms and periodogram analysis, results revealed different locomotor pattern. However, locomotor rhythm of juveniles was more stable than adults. Also, the locomotor activity rhythm of groups was more defined than that of the isolated individuals. Moreover, the activity of mixed groups as well as unmixed groups was more pronounced than the activity of the isolated individuals. Furthermore, results showed no significant difference between locomotor rhythm pattern of males and females of this species.  相似文献

The production of Tsr factor by Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae was influenced by low temperature (10°C) In the presence of seed exudate collected at 10°C and 25°C or naringenin (10fuM). Root exudate collected at 25°C and naringenin induced Tsr factor in R. leguminosarum causing thick and short root phenotype and root hair curling and deformation of host root. Root exudate collected at 10°C also induced root hair curling but Tsr activity was low. low temperature grown plants had poor nodulation, nitrogen fixation, nitrogen content and total blomass as compared to plants grown at 25°C. Rhizospheric application of naringenin partially alleviated the deleterious effect of low temperature on nodulation status and nodule efficiency.  相似文献

Freshly collected samples of Tylos europaeus from Korba beach (northeast of Tunisia) were housed in an environmental cabinet at controlled temperature (18°C?±?.5°C) and photoperiod. Locomotor activity was recorded under two photoperiodic regimens by infrared actography every 20?min by multichannel data loggers. One regimen simulated the natural light-dark cycle on the day of collection, whereas the second imposed a state of continuous darkness on all individuals. Under entraining conditions, the animals displayed rhythmic activity, in phase with the period of darkness, whereas in continuous darkness these isopods exhibited a strong endogenous rhythm with circadian and semidiurnal components at mean periods of τ (h:min)?=?25:09?±?01:02?h and τ?=?12:32?±?00:26?h, respectively. In the free-running circadian locomotor activity rhythm of a 7-year-old male owl monkey (Aotus lemurinus griseimembra) kept under constant light and climatic conditions (LL 0.2 lux, 25°C ± 1°C, 60 ± 5% relative humidity [RH]), a second rhythm component developed that showed strong relative coordination with the free-running activity rhythm of 24.4h and a 24h rhythm. The simultaneously recorded feeding activity rhythm strongly resembled this rhythm component. Therefore, it seems justified to infer that there was an internal desynchronization between the two behavioral rhythms or their circadian pacemakers, that is, between the light-entrainable oscillator located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) and a food-entrainable oscillator located outside the SCN. This internal desynchronization may have been induced and/or maintained by a zeitgeber effect of the (irregular) 24h feeding schedule on the food-entrainable oscillator. The weak relative coordination shown by the activity rhythm indicates a much weaker coupling of the light-entrainable oscillator to the food-entrainable oscillator than vice versa. Melanerita atramentosa Reeve is active during high water and for a period after the ebb, until the substratum dries. A circatidal rhythm with an endogenous inequality between the diurnal and nocturnal high water activity is present in freshly collected snails placed under constant conditions (LL, 30 lux, temperature 21 °C, water level constant). The free-running period of the circatidal rhythm was approximately 24.3 h, slightly less than the tidal period of 24.8 h. This rhythm faded out after 4–6 days of constant conditions. Snails acclimated to non-tidal conditions were active at night. This rhythm persisted under constant conditions for 5–10 days, after which it too faded out. Shock-freezing re-initiated the circatidal rhythm, supporting a ‘multiple-clock’ hypothesis of control. Its limits entrainment are probably narrow, but an entrained periodicity persists for a number of cycles. A model of clock interaction and environmental influence is advanced.  相似文献

In this work, we analysed the efficacy of different commercial bio-insecticides (Steinernema feltiae, Steinernema carpocapsae, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and Bacillus thuringiensis) by valuating the mortality induced on two insect models, Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera) and Sarcophaga africa (Diptera) after exposure to different temperatures (10, 20 and 30 °C). Moreover, we investigated the effects of temperature on the basal humoral immunity of the two target insects; particularly, phenoloxidase (PO) and lysozyme activity. Our results show that G. mellonella is susceptible to all bio-insecticides at all the examined temperatures, except when infected at 10 °C with S. carpocapsae and at 30 °C with S. feltiae and B. thuringiensis. S. africa is more susceptible at 30 °C to all bioinsecticides; whereas, when infected at 10 and 20 °C, H. bacteriophora is the most efficient. Temperature modulates PO activity of both G. mellonella and S. africa, otherwise variations in lysozyme activity is observed only in G. mellonella. Except for a possible correlation between the increased lysozyme activity and the delayed Bt efficacy recorded on G. mellonella at 30 °C, a different resistance to bio-insecticides at different temperatures does not seem to be associated to variations of the host basal immunity, probably due to immunoevasive and immunodepressive strategies of these entomopathogens.  相似文献

The effects of temperature on larval development and the timing of pupation in the carpenter moth, Cossus insularis (Staudinger) (Lepidoptera: Cossidae) were examined by artificial rearing under different temperatures and the same photoperiod (15L:9D). Although C. insularis pupated and emerged at 20, 25, and 30 °C, the pupation rate was lower at 20 °C than at 25 and 30 °C. These results suggest that the optimum temperature range for preadult development is 25–30 °C. The duration of larval development was about 260 days for the first pupation group at 25 and 30 °C, and at least 600 days at 20 °C. Therefore, the C. insularis generation time was 2 years or more, as the total effective temperature for development from hatching to the pupal stage was unlikely to be reached within 1 year in Tokushima Prefecture. The second group pupated at 25 °C, about 200 days after the first group. This periodicity of pupation was likely due to the free-running period of the circannual rhythm. Furthermore, although only the first group pupated at 30 °C, the peak was almost synchronous with the first group at 25 °C. These results indicate that the timing of the first pupation group in C. insularis is temperature compensated. Therefore we propose that the presence of an endogenous rhythm during the development of C. insularis is evidence for a circannual rhythm related to the timing of pupation.  相似文献

Biocontrol of the whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) using entomopathogenic fungi has been a difficult challenge under greenhouse conditions. In order to select fungal isolates adapted to high temperature and extremely low moisture nine isolates of Lecanicillium lecanii (Zimmerman) Zare & W. Gams, L. attenuatum Zare & W. Gams and L. longisporum (Petch) Zare & W. Gams (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) were evaluated. In vitro assays were performed to determine colony radial growth, conidial production and conidial germination in three water activity media (aw = 0.97, 0.98 and 1.00) at 28 and 32 °C. Virulence of Lecanicillium spp. isolates was evaluated against third instar T. vaporariorum on tomato plants at 23 °C. Colony radial growth, conidial production and germination decreased with the reduction in water activity, while 32 °C was extremely detrimental for all fungal isolates. However, some isolates were able to grow and produce conidia at low water activity and high temperature. Additionally, mortality above 60 % was recorded for one of these isolates. Practical implementation of biocontrol of T. vaporariorum under greenhouse production systems should consider the selection of those Lecanicillium isolates that show tolerance to the adverse environmental conditions in greenhouses.  相似文献

A temperature-sensitive mutant of Neurospora crassa, with reduced levels of protein synthesis at 37°C, was used to identify some essential events in conidial germination. Conidia of mutant strain psi-1 were incubated for 2 hr at 37°C and then shifted to 20°C. Germination was inhibited at 37°C, but commenced after 1.5 hr at 20°C. Increases in aspartate transcarbamylase activity, cell wall synthesis, and nuclear number preceded germination. However, increases in glutamate dehydrogenase activity, amino acid uptake, and DNA synthesis were inhibited prior to germination. Although all of these events were correlated with germination in control cultures of the mutant at 20°C and of its parent strain at 20 and 37°C, some events were apparently not essential for germination. The requirement for aspartate transcarbamylase activity was demonstrated independently by the failure of strain pyr-3d (lacking the activity) to germinate in the absence of uridine. The dispensability of glutamate dehydrogenase activity and DNA synthesis for the germination of some conidia was verified by the germination of strain am-1 (lacking glutamate dehydrogenase activity) in the absence of glutamate and by the germination of the parent strain in the presence of hydroxyurea (an inhibitor of DNA synthesis). These findings identify some landmarks in germination which may be useful in further studies of the regulation of a developmental program. They also provide preliminary evidence that the resting conidia may contain nuclei arrested at different stages of their division cycle.  相似文献

Activity thresholds were measured in nine anholocyclic clones of the peach‐potato aphid Myzus persicae collected along a latitudinal cline of its European distribution from Sweden to Spain. The effects of collection origin and intra‐ and intergenerational acclimation on these thresholds were investigated. Low‐temperature (10°C) acclimation for one generation depressed the movement threshold and chill coma temperatures, with the largest reduction in movement threshold recorded for clone UK 1 (8.8–2.5°C) and in chill coma for UK 2 (4.8–2.0°C). High‐temperature (25°C) acclimation for one generation increased the heat movement threshold and heat coma temperature with the largest increase in the movement threshold (40.1–41.1°C) and heat coma (41.4–42.3°C) recorded for clone Swed 1. There was no further intergenerational acclimation over three generations. High‐temperature activity thresholds were less plastic than low‐temperature thresholds, and, consequently, thermal activity ranges were expanded following low‐temperature acclimation. No constant affect of acclimation was observed on chill coma recovery, although clonal differences were observed with Swed 1 and 3 requiring some of the longest complete recovery times. There was no relationship between latitude and activity thresholds with the exception of heat coma data where Scandinavian clones Swed 2 and 3 consistently displayed some of the lowest heat coma temperatures (e.g. 41.3°C for both clones at 20°C) and Mediterranean clones Span 1, 2 and 3 displayed some of the highest (e.g. 42.1, 41.9 and 42.5°C, respectively, at 20°C). These data suggest that clonal mixing could occur over a large scale across Europe, limiting local adaptation to areas where conditions enable long‐term persistence of populations, e.g. adaptation to higher temperatures in the Mediterranean region. It is suggested that aphid thermal tolerance could be governed more by clonal type than the latitudinal origin.  相似文献

It has been suggested that some animals are much more capable of perceiving certain kinds of geophysical stimuli which may precede earthquakes than humans, but the anecdotal phenomena or stories about unusual animal behaviors prior to an earthquake should be interpreted with objective data. During the Wenchuan magnitude 8.0 earthquake that happened in Wenchuan county (31.0° north latitude, 103.4° east longitude) of Sichuan province, China, on May 12, 2008, eight mice were monitored for locomotor activity and circadian rhythm in constant darkness with temperature 22–24 °C and humidity 55–65% for 38 days. The ongoing monitoring of locomotor activity of mice in our laboratory made it possible to design a posteriori study investigating whether the earthquake was associated with any change in animal behavior. Based on analyzing the recorded data with single cosinor, we found that the locomotor activity dramatically decreased in six of these eight mice on day 3 before the earthquake, and the circadian rhythm of their locomotor activity was no longer detected. The behavioral change lasted for 6 days before the locomotor activity returned to its original state. Analyses of concurrent geomagnetic data showed a higher total intensity during the span when the circadian rhythm in locomotor activity weakened. These results indicated that the behaviors, including circadian rhythm and activity, in these mice indeed changed prior to the earthquake, and the behavioral change might be associated with a change of geomagnetic intensity. The supratidal amphipod Talorchestia longicornis Say has a circadian rhythm in activity, in which it is active on the substrate surface at night and inactive in burrows during the day. The present study determined: (1) the circadian rhythms in individual versus groups of amphipods; (2) the range of temperature cycles that entrain the circadian rhythm; (3) entrainment by high-temperature cycles versus light?:?dark cycles, and (4) seasonal substrate temperature cycles. The circadian rhythm was determined by monitoring temporal changes in surface activity using a video system. Individual and groups of amphipods have similar circadian rhythms. Entrainment occurred only to temperature cycles that included temperatures below 20°C (10–20, 15–20, 17–19, 15–25°C) but not to temperatures above 20°C (20–25, 20–30°C), and required only a 2°C temperature cycle (17–19°C). Diel substrate temperatures were above 20°C in the summer and below 20°C during the winter. Upon simultaneous exposure to a diel high-temperature cycle (20–30°C) and a light?:?dark cycle phased differently, amphipods entrained to the light?:?dark cycle. Past studies found that a temperature cycle below 20°C overrode the light?:?dark cycle for entrainment. The functional significance of this change in entrainment cues may be that while buried during the winter, the activity rhythm remains in phase with the day?:?night cycle by the substrate temperature cycles. During the summer, T. longicornis switches to the light?:?dark cycle for entrainment, perhaps as a mechanism to phase activity precisely to the short summer nights.  相似文献

The photosynthetic activity of leaf slices from Spinacia oleracea L., Cucumis sativus L. and Nerium oleander L. was measured in 25° C immediately after preincubation for 2.5 h at various photon flux densities (PFD) with chilling at 4°C, or at a moderate (450 μmol m−2 s−1) PFD with various temperatures below 25°C. Inhibition of photosynthesis was evident in C. sativus and 45°C-grown N. oleander after preincubation at 4°C at all PFD. The inhibition was most severe at fluxes in excess of the moderate PFD under which the plants were grown. Photosynthesis in S. oleracea and 20°C-grown N. oleander was not inhibited at 4°C unless the PFD was in excess of this moderate PFD. The inhibition of photosynthesis was initiated in C. sativus below 13°C, and in 45°C-grown N. oleander below 8°C. A phase transition in the polar lipids from the thylakoids of these plants was detected at about the same temperatures. For S. oleracea and 20°C-grown N. oleander preincubated under the same conditions, there was no inhibition of photosynthesis and no phase transition above 0°C. These results show that some component of photosynthesis was disrupted in the light at temperatures below that of the phase transition in the thylakoid polar lipids.  相似文献

Seed of Zostera marina L. collected at Punta Chueca, Sonora, that was germinated in artificial seawater under growth chamber conditions was less affected by salinity than by temperature. Mean germination was higher for seed collected on reproductive shoots in situ (43%) than for seed collected in fresh beach debris (17%), but no germination was recorded for seed collected in dried beach debris. Mean germination for seed kept at either 15 or 35‰ salinity was approximately equal. Earliest germination was recorded in late April 1980, two weeks after collection, and germination continued through March 1981 at 18–20°C, conditions which are comparable to winter water temperatures in Canal del Infiernillo. Germination was inhibited at 28–32°C, temperatures that are near summer water conditions. The germination responses reflect the adaptive strategies of an annual population to habitat conditions near the southern limit of the species.  相似文献

In order to investigate the potential causal link between the rhythm of activity and body temperature, we simultaneously recorded rectal temperature and total locomotor activity in five clinically healthy female rabbits (blue Vienna breed), 12 week old and mean body weight 2.7 ± 0.3. Animals were housed in individual cages (90?×?50?×?35 cm) under natural 12/12 light/dark cycle. Total locomotor activity was monitored for 15 days by an activity data logger. On day 1, 5, 10, and 15 rectal temperature was recorded every 2 h for a 24-h period. Application of single cosinor method showed a nocturnal daily rhythm of rectal temperature with a range of oscillation of about 1 °C, acrophase after dusk and low robustness value. The daily rhythm of locomotor activity showed its acrophase in the middle of the scotophase and a high robustness value. This information improves the knowledge available on the circadian biology of rabbits useful in the evaluation of physiology of this species.  相似文献

We used implanted miniature data loggers to obtain the first measurements of body temperature from a free-ranging anthropoid primate. Vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) living in a highly seasonal, semi-arid environment maintained a lower mean 24-h body temperature in winter (34.6 ± 0.5 °C) than in summer (36.2 ± 0.1 °C), and demonstrated increased heterothermy (as indexed by the 24-h amplitude of their body temperature rhythm) in response to proximal environmental stressors. The mean 24-h amplitude of the body temperature rhythm in summer (2.5 ± 0.1 °C) was lower than that in winter (3.2 ± 0.4 °C), with the highest amplitude for an individual monkey (5.6 °C) recorded in winter. The higher amplitude of the body temperature rhythm in winter was a consequence primarily of lower 24-h minimum body temperatures during the nocturnal phase, when monkeys were inactive. These low minimum body temperatures were associated with low black globe temperature (GLMM, β = 0.046, P < 0.001), short photoperiod (β = 0.010, P < 0.001) and low rainfall over the previous 2 months, which we used as a proxy for food availability (β = 0.001, P < 0.001). Despite the lower average winter minimum body temperatures, there was no change in the lower modal body temperature between winter and summer. Therefore, unlike the regulated physiological adjustments proposed for torpor or hibernation, these minimum winter body temperatures did not appear to reflect a regulated reduction in body temperature. The thermoregulatory plasticity nevertheless may have fitness benefits for vervet monkeys.  相似文献

Supercooling points (SCP) of adult Diamesa mendotae Muttkowski, 1915 (Diptera: Chironomidae) were determined at 3, 5, 9, 12 and 17 days post-collection. Supercooling points were recorded using surface contact thermometry and a cooling rate of ca. 1°C min?1. Female SCPs averaged ?22.81, ?23.76, ?23.85, ?23.65, and ?20.87°C on each date post-collection and did not differ significantly. Male SCPs were statistically similar and averaged ?21.75, ?23.53, ?23.68, ?23.66, and ?22.92°C on each date post-collection. Paired comparisons of female/male SCPs on each date post-collection did not show significant differences over time. The overall mean SCP of D. mendotae (?23.05°C) is substantially lower than values of ?5.3°C and ?5.7°C published for adults and larvae of Belgica antarctica Jacobs 1900 collected at Palmer Station (Antarctica) and ?14.2°C for larvae of Paraclunio alaskensis Coquillett 1900 collected at Vancouver Island, British Columbia. In addition, the SCP of this species appears to be lower than that of other winter-active insect species reported in the literature. Although no adults survived after the SCP was recorded, further studies are necessary to determine if D. mendotae is a freeze-intolerant insect. Nevertheless, our results suggest that a low SCP could be used as a mechanism to facilitate emergence and adult activity of this species during winter conditions.  相似文献
