The fairy shrimps Chirocephalus kerkyrensis and C. diaphanus show a high EFA concentration as compared with other marine and freshwater organisms. Based on its 18:3w3 and 20:5w3 FA pattern, C. kerkyrensis is comparable with marine-type Artemia; C. diaphanus, on the contrary, is rich in both these essential fatty acids. Wild populations of five Chirocephalus species from Italy were tested for their fatty acid profiles, particularly essential
fatty acids (EFA) in order to obtain information on species differences. Chirocephalus diaphanus, C. kerkyrensis and C. salinus
were from temporary plain pools, whereas C. ruffoi and C. marchesonii came from a mountain pool and an astatic high altitude
lake. Statistical comparisons of the results obtained revealed significant (P < 0.05) qualitative and quantitative differences
among the species studied. Besides genetic make-up, other factors are presumably involved in these differences. Among these,
environmental stability, and hence food quality and quantity, may play a major role, an hypothesis supported by previous findings
regarding the possibility of manipulating fairy shrimp fatty acid patterns by using different diets. Further investigation
is needed, however, on the fatty acid composition of the food resources from different habitats in relation to the fairy shrimp
inhabitants.

Uptake of lead,cadmium and zinc by the fairy shrimp,Branchinecta longiantenna (Crustacea: Anostraca)
Individuals of the fairy shrimp, Branchinecta longiantenna, were subjected to 5 concentrations (0.1 to 15 mg l–1) of Pb in diluted habitat water at 13 °C. Lead concentrations (mg kg–1 wet weight) in the animals were determined at 2-day intervals by digestion in nitric acid followed by atomic absorption analysis. The shrimp were also subjected to 0.1 mg l–1 media of Cd and Zn, separately.Uptake rates by the fairy shrimp for the three metal ions at 0.1 mg l–1 were: 0.111, 0.0885, and 0.0460 mg kg–1 day–1 for Zn, Pb, and Cd, respectively. After 2 days in 1.0 mg l–1 Cd or Zn, the animals expired; but they surviced for 8 days in a 10 mg l–1 Pb medium and for 2 days in 25 mg l–1 Pb. Lead uptake demonstrated a linear dependence on the Pb concentration in the media.Shrimp survived at much higher tissue accumulations of Pb compared to Zn and Cd. Estimated lethal doses were 20, 1.2–2.4, and 0.4–1.4 mg kg–1 wet weight for Pb, Zn, and Cd, respectively. Pb was found to be at much lower concentration than Cd or Zn in the natural pond water but between Cd and Zn levels in the sediment. Laboratory cultured Streptocephalus proboscideus (three sizes (mm), viz. 8.44 ± 0.95 (virgin), 14.18 ± 1.49 (adult I) and 19.24 ± 1.52 (adult II)) were offered (separately
for males and females) field collected zooplankton (12 prey types) at three levels of abundance (1.0 ml−1, 2.0 ml−1 and 4.1 ind. ml−1 in 30-minute feeding experiments. Gut contents, analyzed for abundance and diversity of prey type, showed that predator size,
sex and their interaction had strong effects on prey consumption. Regardless of their size, and of prey density, S. proboscideus females consumed 25–90% more prey than males. Their filtration rates (adult II) were higher (125 ml ind.−1 h.−1) than those of males (30 ml ind.−1 h.−1) too. Rotifers had the highest numerical percentage in the gut, regardless of predator size or sex. Cladocerans were only
consumed by adults I and II. Adult II females consumed 28.5–43.3 μg zooplankton dry weight ind.−1 h.−1. Size distribution of B. longirostris in the field and in the gut were closely similar. This study confirms S. proboscideus as a non-selective filter feeder. Since it did not eat jumping rotifers, copepod nauplii and copepodites, it may contribute

Localization of crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) activity in the brain ganglia of Streptocephalus dichotomus was demonstrated by immunocytochemical method. For this, two different rabbit antisera, one raised against a crayfish Orconectus limosus, and the other with a crab Carcinus maenas, were used. Positive immunoreactivity was recorded with the antibody raised against Orconectus limosus CHH. However, the antibody raised against the CHH of the crab, Carcinus maenas failed to show any cross-reactivity. The biological specificity of these peptides was further confirmed by immunoblotting and immunodiffusion studies performed with the partially purified CHH. The results obtained with the immunodot-blotting and immunodiffusion studies with CHH, further confirmed the immunocytochemical studies. Bioassay experiments performed with a freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii indicate the interspecific biological activity of this neuropeptide. The present study indicates that besides the sinus gland, there are other sites of CHH synthesis and release in the brain ganglia of S. dichotomus. 相似文献

The life cycle of Chirocephalus kerkyrensis, a typicalspecies of the Mediterranean plain forest, was studied in thefield during 1990/91 and 1991/92.Temperature, and its variation, was the major factor affectinglife history. Marked, sudden temperature fluctuations resultedin depressed growth and longevity. Fertility was positivelycorrelated (P<0.001) with female body length. Nodecline in egg production was observed at the end of life, incontrast to other species. Hatching was observed after a longdrought followed by alternating wet and dry phases. Laboratorytests on hatching gave contrasting results and showed thatdrying is not obligatory. Cysts stored in 100% relativehumidity gave higher numbers of nauplii after a shorter timethan dried ones, at all temperatures tested. 相似文献

This study reports on male-biased sex ratios in west Mediterranean populations of the freshwater anostracan Branchipus schaefferi (Crustacea, Anostraca, Branchipodidae), in contrast to populations elsewhere. Crossing experiments over several generations indicate a clear paternal inheritance of the trait, possibly with a dosage effect. Various mechanisms which may underlie this phenomenon are discussed, the most plausible being the presence of one or more supernumerary ('B') chromosomes--as evidenced by karyological observations--interfering with sex determination and probably having an accumulation mechanism in male individuals. 相似文献

This study analysed the levels of genetic differentiation within and among the six Italian species of the fairy shrimp genus Chirocephalus by analysing electrophoretic polymorphisms at 22 enzymatic loci and by sequencing a 665‐bp fragment of the mitochondrial gene encoding for subunit I of cytochrome oxidase. The allozyme data revealed different levels of intra‐specific differentiation; mean θ estimates were low in Chirocephalus salinus, higher and comparable in C. diaphanus and C. kerkyrensis, while C. ruffoi was the most genetically structured species. At the inter‐specific level, C. marchesonii was the most differentiated species, both for allozymes and mtDNA. Phylogenetic relationships deduced from allozymes and mtDNA were not always consistent with each other. This highlights the differences in performance of the two classes of molecular markers and the need of different independent strategies of data analysis to search for possible incongruence. Neither allozymes nor mtDNA supported monophyly of the diaphanus‐group, previously recognized on the basis of the morphology of appendages (antennae and penes). In contrast the molecular results were consistent with the great heterogeneity in resting egg morphology among representatives of the diaphanus‐group. 相似文献

Phenol oxidase activity in the hemolymph of male Streptocephalus dichotomus is only 1/3rd of that of females. About 70% of
this activity resides in cell lysate and 30% in plasma. Electrophoretic analysis revealed that male plasma has a single fraction
of tyrosine hydroxylase, evidenced by positivity towards tyrosine methylester-PMS-NBT. Female hemolymph has as many as three
isozymes showing diphenoloxidase activity. The significance of these results is discussed with reference to sex-linked enzyme
activity and its possible role in longevity.

The feeding habits of the filter-feeding fairy shrimp Streptocephalus proboscideus are documented experimentally by offering them ciliates, Volvox, rotifers, nematodes and small crustaceans as prey. Escape capabilities (e.g. swimming speed) rather than size or shape were found to determine these animals' vulnerability to predation by the fairy shrimp. Ingestion rates for Volvox increased hyperbolically with size and, at the high temperatures in which they live, fairy shrimps may daily remove the equivalent of their body weight from the environment. 相似文献

During a two-year investigation of freshwater microcrustaceans in Thailand, an undescribed species of fairy shrimp of the genus Branchinella Sayce, 1903 in the family Thamnocephalidae, was discovered. This is the first record of the genus and the family from Southeast Asia and the second anostracan reported from Thailand. The new species, Branchinella thailandensis n. sp. appears to be morphologically intermediate between B. kugenumaensis (Ishikawa, 1895) from Japan and east China, and B. madurai Raj, 1951 from India and Pakistan. B. thailandensis n. sp. was collected from several temporary ponds in 11 provinces of the northeast and the central Thailand, often co-occurring with Streptocephalus sirindhornae Sanoamuang, Murugan, Weekers & Dumont, 2000. 相似文献

This paper reports new distribution records of large branchiopods for Mexico following a three year survey of the Baja California
peninsula. The occurance of the anostracans Thamnocephalus mexicanus (Linder, 1941) and T. platyurus (Packard, 1877), the
notostracan Lepidurus lemmoni (Holmes, 1894), and the spinicaudatans Eulimnadia cylindrova (Belk, 1989) and E. texana (Packard,1871),
all represent the first records for the peninsula. An undescribed species of the anostracan genus Streptocephalus is recorded
from the state of Baja California (Norte). The occurrence of the notostracan genus Triops and four other anostracan species
on the peninsula is also confirmed. The conchostracan Cyclestheria hislopi (Baird, 1859) is recorded from the state of Quintana
Roo. The collections of Lepidurus and Cyclestheria are the first records for México. These records increase the number of
species of large branchiopods reported fromMéxico to 36: 20 Anostraca, 3 Notostraca, 11 Spinicaudata, and 2Laevicaudata.

A new species of fairy shrimp, Streptocephalus siamensis n. sp., is described from five temporary pools in Suphan Buri and Kanchana Buri Provinces, central Thailand. It sometimes co‐occurs with its congener, S. sirindhornae . This new species belongs to the subgenus Parastreptocephalus which is defined by bearing tetrahedral cysts. Food concentration (0.5 × 103 – 5 × 105
Scenedesmus cells m1–1) significant influenced the somatic growth, maturation and survivorship ofS. proboscideus larvae. A density of 5 × 104 cells m1–1 was optimal for early larval stages. Of four temperature tested (20–35 °C), 30 °C resulted in the best growth and survival. Maturation time was inversely related to temperature, and was size- rather that age-dependent. Larvae were tolerant of a wide conductivity range, but optimal growth and survival were observed at 260 µS cm–1. Nitrate-Nitrogen (NO2-N) caused a larval mortality of 50% after 24 h at 0.58 mg1–1. 相似文献

Two micronized waste products were evaluated in a closed recirculation system for their suitability to replace a costly die of live algae in the culture of the Sudanese fairy shrimp,Streptocephalus proboscideus. The test population was kept at a density of 50 individuals 1–1 (sex ratio:1/1). An agricultural waste product (YM20; mixture of pea and corn), and an industrial waste product (POME; Palm Oil Mill Effluent) were fed at two regimes: 0.1 and 0.2mg DW animal–1 h–1. The microalgaSelenastrum capricornutum, used as a reference diet at a density of 2.0±0.82 × 105 cells ml–1, proved adequate in preliminary screening experiments. The effect of the diets and feeding regimes on selected biological variables and water quality were followed by weekly observations and measurements. Results in terms of growth (=increase in length), cyst production, and mortality were more successful when animals were supplied high densities of YM20 than in all other treatments: mean brood size was 155±6 cysts with a maximum of 266. Length after 6 weeks about 2 cm while this ranged between1.4–1.7 cm for the other treatments. Weekly mortality rate was comparable under high food conditions. Mortality rate gradually increased from 5% in the first week to 15% in the last week. Water quality, especially nitriate concentration (measured as NO2-N), was slightly better in the dry food fed than in the algae fed cultures. Present results are promising for large-scale culturing ofS. proboscideus in a cost-effective way by making use of agro-industrial waste products. 相似文献

Three groups of six calves each were fed a milk replacer at 0.8 kg and a starter concentrate ad libitum. Calves of the control group received the basal diet supplemented with rapeseed oil at 10 g per kg of feed solids. Calves of treatment groups were fed diets supplemented with a synthetically produced oil containing 62.3% methyl esters of CLA. The CLA-oil was added to milk at expense of rapeseed oil and fed at 5 and 10 g · kg?1 feed solids for 63 days. Calves were slaughtered at 115 days of age. There was no significant effect of CLA on growth, intake of starter, feed conversion, chemical composition of meat and its oxidative stability. Dietary supplementation with CLA at 10 g · kg?1 significantly increased CLA content in m. longissimus dorsi (MLD) from 5.6 to 19.3 mg · 100 g?1, in liver from 13.1 to 68.8 mg · 100 g?1, and in perirenal fat from 0.37 to 3.17 g · 100 g?1. Dietary CLA decreased the ratio of cis-9, trans-11 and trans-10, cis-12 isomers of CLA in tissues, concentration of monounsaturated fatty acids in the MLD and fat, as well as the concentration of fatty acids with 20 and 22 carbon atoms. It can be concluded that in veal calves unprotected CLA apparently escaped ruminal hydrogenation, but was preferentially incorporated into depot fat. 相似文献

In this study, we report on the known Artemia habitats worldwide. Recent literature information is incorporated about the taxonomic status of the various populations studied. The genus is composed of di-, tri-, tetra- and pentaploid parthenogenetic populations and of the following bisexual species: A. franciscana franciscana , A. franciscana monica , A. franciscana sp., A. persimilis , A. salina , A. urmiana , A. sinica and A. sp. from Kazakhstan. The problems of characterizing new brine shrimp populations are discussed. In view of the great importance of Artemia as part of the live food chain for the culture of fish and shellfish larvae and the present cyst shortage from the market, the need for commercial exploitation and development of new Artemia sources is now, more than ever, necessary. 相似文献

The genus Branchinella is diverse in Western Australia, with 18 species, including four new species described here. B. complexidigitata n. sp. is characterized by an intricate frontal appendage, unlike any within the genus. The other three are less remarkable; B. halsei n. sp. is like B. lyrifera, B. kadjikadji n. sp. belongs to the B. affinis group and B. nana n. sp. is similar to B. simplex; similarities are based on frontal appendage and to a lesser extent on the second antennae and penis. Only two species, B. affinis and B. longirostris, are common and widespread; many of the remainder being localized endemics. The high diversity in Western Australia is explained by broad latitudinal range, habitat diversity, and great age and isolation of the landscape. 相似文献
