Synopsis We evaluated morphological differentiation among populations of threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, from the Limia and Miño basins (Galicia, NW Spain), the river Karup (Denmark) and Aiguamolls de l’Empordà (Girona, northeast Spain), using multivariate analysis of morphometric and meristic characters. Multivariate discriminant analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis uncovered significant differences among the four main groups, between the two groups from Galicia and among populations within the Miño basin. The stickleback from Galicia differed from the Danish group in head and body armour characters. Between the Miño and Limia groups, we found differences in both head and body proportions as well as in number of gill rakers. Within the Miño basin populations varied with respect to head and body armour traits and the number of lower gill rakers. Clustering analysis divided these populations into two groups based on the latter trait: fish from the upper section of river Miño and tributaries (a lower number of lower gill rakers) and fish from the central and lower reaches of the river. Overall, morphometric traits were more useful than meristic ones; however, the two types of data provided congruent information about the morphological differentiation of stickleback populations.  相似文献

This study hypothesizes the existence of three groups of sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus L. in Portugal (North/Central group, Tagus group, and Guadiana group), possibly promoted by seabed topography isolation during the oceanic phase of the life cycle. Within this context, our purpose was to analyze the existence of a stock structure on sea lamprey populations sampled in the major Portuguese river basins using both morphological characters and heart tissue fatty acid signature. In both cases, the multiple discriminant analysis revealed statistically significant differences among groups, and the overall corrected classification rate estimated from cross-validation procedure was particularly high for the cardiac muscle fatty acid profiles (i.e. 83.8%). Morphometric characters were much more useful than meristic ones to discriminate stocks, and the most important variables for group differentiation were eye length, second dorsal fin length and branchial length. Fatty acid analysis showed that all lampreys from the southern Guadiana group were correctly classified and not mixing with individuals from any other group, reflecting a typical heart fatty acid signature. Our results revealed that 89.5% and 72.2% of the individuals from the Tagus and North/Central groups, respectively, were also correctly classified, despite some degree of overlap between individuals from these groups. The fatty acids that contributed to the observed segregation were C16:0; C17:0; C18:1ω9; C20:3ω6 and C22:2ω6. Detected differences are probably related with environmental variables to which lampreys may have been exposed, which leaded to different patterns of gene expression. These results suggest the existence of three different sea lamprey stocks in Portugal, with implication in terms of management and conservation.  相似文献

Data on polymorphism (plastic and meristic characters) are obtained for spawners of resident nonparasitic form of European river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis from the Serebristaya River. The new data verify the diagnosis of this species and contribute to the formulation of a hypothesis on the presence of several phenotypic groups: dwarf, small-sized, and common. Analysis of plastic characters and of the number of trunk myomeres demonstrated that the values of these characters reliably depend on position of lampreys in a certain discerned group. Some aspects of biology of this species are discussed: spawning and interaction between resident nonparasitic river and migrating parasitic lampreys.  相似文献

Neural crest cells contribute extensively to vertebrate head morphogenesis and their origin is an important question to address in understanding the evolution of the craniate head. The distribution pattern of cephalic crest cells was examined in embryos of one of the living agnathan vertebrates, Lampetra japonica. The initial appearance of putative crest cells was observed on the dorsal aspect of the neural rod at stage 20.5 and ventral expansion of these cells was first seen at the level of rostral somites. As in gnathostomes, cephalic crest cells migrate beneath the surface ectoderm and form three major cell populations, each being separated at the levels of rhombomeres (r) 3 and r5. The neural crest seems initially to be produced at all neuraxial levels except for the rostral-most area, and cephalic crest cells are secondarily excluded from levels r3 and r5. Such a pattern of crest cell distribution prefigures the morphology of the cranial nerve anlage. The second or middle crest cell population passes medial to the otocyst, implying that the otocyst does not serve as a barrier to separate the crest cell populations. The three cephalic crest cell populations fill the pharyngeal arch ventrally, covering the pharyngeal mesoderm laterally with the rostral-most population covering the premandibular region and mandibular arch. The third cell population is equivalent to the circumpharyngeal crest cells in the chick, and its influx into the pharyngeal region precedes the formation of postotic pharyngeal arches. Focal injection of DiI revealed the existence of an anteroposterior organization in the neural crest at the neurular stage, destined for each pharyngeal region. The crest cells derived from the posterior midbrain that express the LjOtxA gene, the Otx2 cognate, were shown to migrate into the mandibular arch, a pattern which is identical to gnathostome embryos. It was concluded that the head region of the lamprey embryo shares a common set of morphological characters with gnathostome embryos and that the morphological deviation of the mandibular arch between the gnathostomes and the lamprey is not based on the early embryonic patterning.  相似文献

Historical spawning grounds for sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus L.) in most Portuguese river basins are becoming inaccessible due to the construction of impassable dams and/or weirs. Studies like the one described in this paper are particularly important in areas like the Vouga river basin, where there is a considerable fishing effort from both professional fishermen and poachers. In fact, for management and conservation purposes, it is important to clarify several aspects of the sea lamprey spawning run in this particular watershed. Therefore, a total of 30 radio tagged, migrating sea lampreys were released in the River Vouga and some of its main tributaries during 2004 and 2005. Results from the tracking sessions were used to determine the effect of poaching on the spawners’ population and the characteristics of the resting sites used during the upstream movement. The rivers’ stretches were also characterized according to the type of substrate present in the riverbed and flow type, in order to determine its aptitude to constitute appropriate spawning habitats for sea lampreys. We have identified in the upstream stretches of River Vouga, and in the tributary River Caima, characteristics that are particularly suitable for the construction of nests by the spawners. Presence of larvae provided evidence that spawners migrated into the River Vouga’s upper reaches. However, abundance and age class diversity appeared to be higher downstream of Sernada and Carvoeiro weirs, corroborating the telemetry data which suggested difficulty in passing these obstacles during low precipitation years. In the River Caima, migration was most predictable, which might be related to daily water releases from a small hydropower dam at dusk, that stimulated the lampreys to resume migration. Poaching has had a considerable negative effect on the success of the tagged lampreys’ migration: 76% of the animals released during 2005 were captured. Samples of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), were collected from the eight Cumbrian lakes containing all the known English populations. Comparative material was obtained from North Wales and southern Scotland. Comparisons were performed using otolith ages, meristic and morphological characters and by assessing allele frequencies for serum esterase and for skeletal muscle malate dehydrogenase. The results confirm that both basins of Windermere contain spring and autumn spawning races of charr. As well as differing genetically and exhibiting differing growth rates, the two races have different mean gill raker numbers and mean gill raker lengths. The latter two variables were used to derive a discriminant function which enables individual charr to be ascribed to the correct race with 94-96% accuracy. Within both principal races there were further significant differences between charr from the north and south basins of the lake and possibly also between different spawning grounds within each basin. Variation between six of the remaining seven Cumbrian populations is significant but generally no greater than that between the Windermere spring and autumn spawners. The exception is the Ennerdale charr which stands out on morphological, meristic and genetic characters, has a rapid growth rate despite its oligotrophic environment, and is a river rather than a lake spawner. The charr from North Wales and southern Scotland were clearly distinct, both from each other and from the English populations.  相似文献

The Arabian cyprinodontid Aphanius dispar (Rüppell, 1829) is known to show considerable morphological variation. It has remained unknown, however, whether this variation is a result of environmental differences or allopatric divergence owing to geographical isolation. In this study, 11 populations of A. dispar from three geographically separated basins were analysed, that is, the Makran Basin (I, one river system), the Hormuzgan Basin (II, five rivers and three hot springs) and the Helleh Basin (III, two hot springs) in southern Iran. Statistical analyses do not indicate significant differences between the fishes from river and hot spring habitats (T‐test, p < 0.05), which is also supported by the Canonical Discriminant Analysis (CDA). Nevertheless, morphometric and meristic characters of the fishes, as well as otolith morphology and morphometry, demonstrate that six phenotypic characters discriminate the A. dispar populations of the three basins, that is, (1) predorsal distance (Prdd.SL), (2) head length (HL.SL), (3) pelvic fin length (Lplf.SL), (4) number of pelvic fin rays, as well as relative length of both the (5) medial part and (6) rostrum of the otolith. In addition, these characters display a consistent pattern of variation, thus providing support for the assumption that the phenotypically different A. dispar populations are a result of geographical isolation and not related to environmental differences. It is likely that the geological history of the drainage systems caused isolation event(s) that may date back to the Pleistocene (1.8 million years before present). The high phenotypic differences might suggest that the A. dispar populations from the three studied basins represent separate subspecies or even species.  相似文献

Synopsis This study deals with the taxonomy of ammocoetes of the North American lamprey genus Ichthyomyzon. The characters most useful to identify them are the pigmentation patterns on the caudal fin and the different areas of the head, as well as the number of myomeres. These characters serve as the basis for a taxonomic key to ammocoetes 56 mm in total length and up.  相似文献

The available spawning habitat for the anadromous sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus L., population that enters the River Mondego has been drastically reduced in the last 20 years. The installation of a fish passage in the first impassable dam, the Açude-Ponte, would enable sea lamprey to recolonise the 34.6-km river stretch between the Açude-Ponte and Raiva dams. In order to assess the suitability of the upstream river stretches for this species, 10 radio-tagged sea lamprey were released upstream of the Açude-Ponte dam and tracked continuously throughout the entire migratory path. Lamprey were unable to pass over intact weirs that had been built for recreational purposes. Sea lamprey movements were more frequent during dusk and night than other periods. Increased river discharge at night, resulting from the operation of the Raiva power station, stimulated lamprey movements but reduced ground speeds recorded. After reaching a certain location, some of the animals maintained their position for several weeks, before undergoing a new movement. Two of the main tributaries of this river stretch were used by some sea lamprey, indicating that the animals were able to find these historical spawning grounds.  相似文献

Sexually immature, adult river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis in the upstream migratory phase, were shown to be attracted to water conditioned with ammocoete larvae when tested using a two‐choice flume. Although preliminary, the data suggest that migrating adult river lamprey may be attracted to larval putative pheromone as recorded in sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus .  相似文献

Based on seven larvae from northern Australia, development ofCentrogenys vaigiensis—a species of uncertain phylogenetic affinities—is described for the first time. Identification was established from meristic and osteological characters. Development is characterized by few morphological specializations and is apparently completed at a small size (ca 5 mm standard length). Larvae are deep-bodied and compressed, with very limited head spination (small spines on preopercle, subopercle, opercle and supracleithrum). Fin development takes place at about the time of notochord flexion, and is complete at about 4.3 mm, with the exception of anal spine three, which does not fully transform from a soft ray until after settlement. Fin spines are short, smooth and weak. Larvae are apparently limited to near-shore, shallow marine waters, and based on the size of what are apparently settlement-stage larvae, the pelagic period may be short.  相似文献

Morphological and osteological development of the flathead,Percophis brasiliensis, is described based on specimens collected from southeastern Brazilian waters. Identification of larvae was based on pigment pattern and meristic counts. Distinct melanophores were present on the bottom of the hindbrain, between the bases of the pelvic fins and on the bases of the pectoral fins. Within the family Percophididae onlyPercophis brasiliensis has 57 myomeres, which result in the larvae having an elongated body form. The larval pigment pattern and structure of the caudal complex suggest that the subfamilies Percophinae and Bembropinae are phylogenetically close, while the Hemerocoetinae belong to an advanced group within the family.  相似文献

This study investigated the morphology, morphometric and meristic characters of 117 larval Pimelodus britskii showing early development of head, eye, barbel and snout. Body and mouth pigmentation increased throughout development; the mouth was ventrally situated in the yolk-sac stage, becoming subterminal afterwards, and an embryonic fin was visible in all four stages observed. Post-flexion larval P. bristskii are distinguished from larval P. ortmanni by having 47–50 myomeres (v. 36).  相似文献

Paraliparis adustus sp. nov., a snailfish species from the Bering Sea near the Aleutian Island Archipelago, Alaska, is described based on a single mesopelagic specimen. This new species is clearly distinguished by a combination of several morphological features and meristic counts, including long pointed gill rakers with 0–3 spinules at or near the tip, anus positioned forward near the pectoral symphysis, and color uniform brown. Paraliparis bullacephalus sp. nov. from Shelikof Strait, Gulf of Alaska, is also described. This new species is very similar in meristic characters and general body shape and size to P. holomelas Gilbert, but differs primarily in morphological features of the head, particularly in the shape of the dorsal contour of the head, snout, and opercular flap, mouth size, and eye position.  相似文献

Larvae and juveniles of long sardine, Triportheus auritus, from the lower Amazon river was described, evaluating ontogenetic changes in their external morphology, pigmentation, fin development, morphometry, and meristics. A total of 93 individuals, 83 larvae and 10 juveniles were analyzed, they were captured monthly between 2014 and 2019 in the Amazon river channel and in macrophytes aquatic stands in the alluvial plains located in the lower Amazon River. From each specimen, morphometric and meristic data were measured and then the growth pattern between morphometric variables was analyzed. The larvae have an elongated body in a fusiform shape, superior mouth, simple nostril, pigmented spherical eyes and long intestine, surpassing the median region of the body. Initial pigmentation is scarce, but intensifies through development forming a pattern composed of three longitudinal bands concentrated in the ventral, cephalo-dorsal and lateral line regions. There are also pigments in the mandible, surrounding the mouth, under the swim bladder, intestine and fins. The sequence of complete fin formation is: caudal, anal, dorsal, pectoral and pelvic. The total number of myomeres ranged from 45 to 48 (25–29 preanal and 17–22 postanal). Morphometric relationships indicated differential growth for measurable morphometric parameters, with abrupt growth of snout length, head length and body height in the transition from flexion to postflexion stages. The pre-dorsal distance showed a decrease in the growth rate at the threshold from the larval to the juvenile period. The pre-pectoral and pre-anal distances showed negative allometric growth. In conclusion, the combination of body shape pigmentation pattern and, the formation sequence of fins allow the identification of the genus and coupled with the number of myomeres, morphometric relationships, and ray numbers of the anal fin ensure the differentiation of T. auritus from the other congeneric species. The metamorphosis occurred mainly at the end of the larval period and it is related to changes in the physiological and ecomorphological characteristics of the species.  相似文献

Species delimitation is a permanent issue in systematics. The increasing recognition of geographically isolated populations as independent lineages allowed by new methods of analysis has inflated the species-populations dilemma, which involves deciding whether to consider separate lineages as different species or structured genetic populations. This is commonly observed between fishes of adjacent river basins, with some lineages being considered allopatric sister species and others considered isolated populations or variants of the same species. Pseudocorynopoma doriae is a characid diagnosed from its single congener by the number of anal-fin rays and sexually dimorphic characters of males, including distinct fin colouration. The authors found variation in the colour pattern between isolated populations previously identified as P. doriae but no variation in scale or fin-ray counts. They analysed molecular evidence at the population level and morphological differences related to life history (e.g., colour dimorphism related to inseminating behaviour). The results provide compelling evidence for the recognition of a new species of Pseudocorynopoma despite the lack of discrete differences in meristic data. The recognition of the new species is consistent with biogeographical evidence for the long-term isolation of the respective river drainages and with differences between the ichthyofaunal communities of these rivers.  相似文献

A study was made to determine the extent of morphological variation in Planococcoides jalensis (Laing), the most important mealybug vector of cocoa swollen shoot virus (CSSV) in West Africa, and to resolve if more than one Planococcoides species is present. Fourteen populations of P. njalensis collected on cocoa from different localities in Ghana and one population each on Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Steud and Coffea canephora Pierre were compared by measured and meristic female characters using two types of morphometric analysis, Discriminant Functional Analysis and Principal Component Analysis. The analyses showed that P. njalensis exhibited a wide range of intraspecific morphological variation, particularly in meristic characters, but failed to identify new Planococcoides species. The results are discussed in relation to the control of the mealybug vectors of CSSV and to the suitability of Gliricidia as a shade tree for cocoa.  相似文献

The initial development of the red-bellied pacu Piaractus brachypomus is described using morphological, meristic and morphometric characteristics. A total of 127 individuals were analysed (47 in the yolk-sac, 35 in pre-flexion, five in flexion, 20 in post-flexion and 20 in juvenile) with standard length varying between 2.92 and 48.61 mm. The larvae are born poorly developed and have a discoidal yolk at ~6.33 mm standard length. During early ontogeny, the mouth passes from terminal to subterminal and the anal opening reaches the vertical line over the midline region of the body. There are changes in body shape from long and moderate to deep, head length from small to large, and eye diameter from moderate to large. Dendritic chromatophores were present in the ventral, dorsal and upper part of the swim bladder in the early larval stages. Rounded spots are evident all over the body in juveniles. The total number of myomeres ranges from 39 to 41 (20–23 pre-anal, 17–20 post-anal). Through the morphometric relationships, it was evidenced that the greatest changes during the initial ontogeny of P. brachypomus occur in the transition from the post-flexion stage to the juvenile period, indicating changes in behaviour, foraging and physiology.  相似文献

The stone moroco Pseudorasbora parva is recorded in the inland artificial and natural water bodies of Crimea. Data from morphometric, size-age, and biological analyses are given. Significant differences in meristic and plastic characters are found between the stone moroco populations from the Crimea, river basins of Ukraine and Far East of Russia. Based on the results, a conclusion is drawn about the naturalization of stone moroco with the formation of self-reproducing populations in the waters of the peninsula. Additional information is given on facultative parasitism of the stone moroco with respect to the larger fishes. The opinion of the negative influence of this invader on the ichthyocenes of the recipient water bodies is confirmed.  相似文献
