The ants Formica aquilonia and F. lugubris which inhabit the entire forest zone of the North Palaearctic and are absent from the basins of the Yana, Indigirka, and Kolyma rivers were found in the coastal area of the Sea of Okhotsk. A possible climatic conditionality of their occurrence in the Northeast is considered based on the data on the biotopic distribution of ants, the temperature causation of their overwintering, and cold hardiness. On the Sea of Okhotsk coast, these ants overwinter at a depth of 40–200 cm in the soil. During winter, the minimum soil temperature at a depth of 40 cm under the anthill was ?5°C. The supercooling temperature of F. aquilonia was not lower than ?20.2 ± 0.5°C, that of F. lugubris, not lower than ?19.6 ± 0.4°C. Half of F. aquilonia individuals did not survive the daily exposure at ?13°C, F. lugubris, at ?16°C. These two cold-resistant species could inhabit some biotopes of the Kolyma River basin, similar to F. exsecta, F. lemani, and F. sanguinea, but they are absent there for some reasons that are not related to the temperature. A similar cold hardiness is characteristic of F. aquilonia in Estonia (Maavara, 1971, 1985), where it represents a side effect of diapause, since excessive cold hardiness has no adaptive significance for insects overwintering in the non-freezing soils of Estonia. Colonization of Siberia by ant species turned out to be possible only due to the existing cold hardiness, i.e. preadaptation to low temperature. On the Sea of Okhotsk coast, cold hardiness of the ants is non-adaptive due to the relatively mild conditions during winter.  相似文献

Changes of the quantitative and qualitative composition of ichthyoplankton off Mauritania (21–16° N) in different seasons of 1997–2008 are analyzed. In this area, pelagic eggs and larvae of over 120 fish species belonging to 71 families are recorded. In warm periods, the fish of the tropical fauna intensively spawn off Mauritania; round sardinella Sardinella aurita, West-African horse mackerel Trachurus trecae, and jack mackerel Caranx rhonchus are dominant. In cold periods, active spawning of fish belonging to the tropical fauna is recorded, the most abundant are European pilchard Sardina pilchardus, European horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus, and Atlantic mackerel Scomber japonicus. The spawning biomass of principal commercial fish species is calculated on the basis of the quantity of eggs laid by females. Environmental factors control fluctuations of abundance and distribution of ichthyoplankton in the considered region.  相似文献

In northern China, freezing injury is observed frequently in the rare species Magnolia wufengensis but not in the more common species Magnolia denudata. To investigate the role of the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) on frost tolerance in these two species, exogenous ABA was applied to the seedlings and then physiological and biochemical responses were measured during cold acclimation. Shoot growth cessation was stimulated by ABA in M. wufengensis but not in M. denudata. Abscisic acid inhibited shoot growth in M. wufengensis but not in M. denudata. Treatment with ABA stimulated leaf senescence in both species, and this effect was greater in M. denudata. For both species, ABA-treated plants exhibited bud dormancy sooner and had an increased tolerance to freezing, decreased water content and increased accumulation of proline, glucose, and fructose in shoots. These effects were generally greater for M. denudata. Freezing tolerance was significantly correlated with content of water, proline, glucose, and fructose for both species, but freezing tolerance was significantly correlated with raffinose content only in M. wufengensis. We conclude that exogenous ABA could increase cold acclimation and improve cold hardiness of both Magnolia species, although M. denudata was more responsive to ABA than M. wufengensis, which might result from a greater dehydration and accumulation of proline and certain soluble sugars.  相似文献

Changes in the qualitative and quantitative composition of ichthyoplankton off the coast of the Moroccan Sahara (21–28° N) in different seasons of 1994–2007 are analyzed. In this region, the pelagic eggs and larvae of over 100 fish species belonging to 62 families have been recorded. In cold periods, off the coast of the Moroccan Sahara there is peak in the spawning of fish of the subtropical fauna. The majority of them are European pilchard Sardina pilchardus, common scad Trachurus trachurus, and Atlantic mackerel Scomber japonicus. In warm periods there is intensive spawning of fish of the tropical fauna. Among them, dominants are round sardinella Sardinella aurita, West-African scad Trachurus trecae, and Atlantic bonito Sarda sarda. The spawning biomass of principal commercial fish is calculated by the quantity of eggs laid by females. The environmental factors are indicated that influence the fluctuation of abundance and distribution of ichthyoplankton in the region under consideration.  相似文献

Decaying logs are important seedbeds in boreal and subalpine forests. However, biotic and abiotic factors and their interactions related to seedling colonization patterns on logs remain unclear. In the present study, we evaluated the influence of bryophyte communities, wood decay type (white-, brown-, and soft-rot) owing to decomposer fungal activities, and environmental abiotic factors on seedling establishment in an old-growth subalpine coniferous forest in Japan. Among the tree species recorded on the conifer logs, Picea jezoensis var. hondoensis was the most dominant. Log surfaces were covered with distinctive patches of liverwort Scapania bolanderi and moss Pleurozium schreberi (approximately 33% cover for each). Redundancy analysis showed that brown-rot in sapwood significantly affects the bryophyte and seedling community on the logs. Generalized linear models suggested that the total bryophyte cover, Scapania cover, and white-rot in heartwood positively associate with Picea seedling density, whereas Pleurozium cover and basal area of adjacent Picea adults negatively associate with Picea seedling density. Results of structural equation modeling suggested that the brown-rot of sapwood positively associates with Scapania cover that has a positive effect on Picea seedling density. Furthermore, brown-rot of sapwood inhibited the Pleurozium cover, thus contributing to the Scapania dominance on the logs. These results suggest that fungal wood decomposer activities affect colonization of Picea seedlings in an indirect way via structuring bryophyte community on the logs.  相似文献

The Upper Yenisei grayling Thymallus svetovidovi sp. nova that inhabits the headwaters of the Yenisei River in Mongolia is described. From the other representatives of the genus Thymallus, the species differs in the elements of body coloration, dorsal fin pattern, some morphometric characters, and genetic characteristics. Besides this species, most of the Yenisei basin is inhabited by Baikal grayling T. baicalensis Dyb., and its low reaches, by the Arctic grayling T. arcticus (Pall.).  相似文献

Potential impacts of an exotic grass, Hemarthria altissima, on restoration of wet prairie community structure (species richness and cover of indicator species) and assembly processes (temporal turnover rates of plant species) on the Kissimmee River floodplain in Central Florida, USA, were evaluated over a 12-year period before and after restoration of hydrologic regimes (2001), and implementation of herbicide treatments (2006–2007) to control its spread. Thresholds for impacts were derived from comparisons of sample sites with variable levels of H. altissima cover. Prior to herbicide treatments, cover of H. altissima exhibited a logistic increase over time, with peak colonization and expansion occurring during major flood events. Mean post-restoration cover of three native wet prairie indicator species (Polygonum punctatum, Panicum hemitomon, and Luziola fluitans) increased to 37.8 ± 3.4 % in plots in which H. altissima cover was <12 %, and did not exceed 15 % in any plots with H. altissima cover >30 %. Prior to and after herbicide treatments, these indicator species largely accounted for observed differences in wet prairie community structure (i.e., cover of wetland forbs and grasses) between heavily infested sites and plots with low or no cover of H. altissima. The cover threshold at which H. altissima began to have these community-level effects was 40–50 %, but lower species richness was found only where H. altissima cover was >80 %. Increasing cover of H. altissima led to a significant decline in temporal turnover rates of plant species (P < 0.001, r2 = 0.10), but also was largely due to plots with very high (>75 %) cover of H. altissima. Mean temporal turnover rates of plant species increased significantly (P = 0.03) after herbicide treatments and subsequently were highest during an ensuing flood pulse. However, 2–3 years after herbicide treatments, regrowth of H. altissima reestablished high cover (mean = 59 ± 9.5 %) in over half of the treated plots. The ability of H. altissima to establish dominant cover in restored hydrologic conditions on the Kissimmee River floodplain, and documented regrowth following herbicide treatments, increase the potential for this exotic grass species to be a pervasive threat to successful reestablishment of wet prairie community structure and assembly processes.  相似文献

Khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), is among the world’s most invasive and destructive pests of stored agricultural products. Its pest status is enhanced by the ability of the larvae to undergo diapause, which increases their tolerance to adverse conditions including insecticides and extreme temperatures. The ability of insects to tolerate extreme conditions can be influenced by their associated bacterial community (the microbiome). Understanding this relationship may lead to improved methods of pest control, but the microbiome of T. granarium is unknown. Here we use next-generation sequencing to address three main questions: 1) How similar are the microbiomes of the closely-related species T. granarium and T. variabile? 2) How does the microbiome change across life stage and physiological state? 3) How is the microbiome of adult T. granarium affected by extreme temperatures? Our results show that the core microbiomes of T. granarium and T. variabile are similar in composition. However, adults of former species have a microbiome dominated by Spiroplasma bacteria (99% of amplified sequences), whereas Spiroplasma in the latter species is almost absent (< 2%). The microbiome of T. granarium differs across life stage (feeding vs non-feeding life stages); its presence in eggs confirms the vertical transmission of Spiroplasma. High temperatures significantly reduced the relative abundance of Spiroplasma, but an effect of low temperatures on the microbiome of T. granarium was not detected. Given its dominance in a key pest species, further study of the interaction between Spiroplasma and its T. granarium host is warranted.  相似文献

Tropical dry forests are strongly affected by seasonality, but its effects on belowground communities are poorly studied. Thus, the objective of this study was to reveal the effect of the season (dry versus wet) on the mycorrhizal status of roots and their potential colonization, and to determine the composition and abundance of spore-based communities of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in rhizospheric soil of two dominant woody species in caatinga communities (tropical dry forest of the Brazilian Northeast). Soil and root samples were taken four times in each season (dry and wet). In the cases of the number of glomerospores and the number of infective propagules of AMF, there were significant differences between the hosts, with greater values observed in the rhizosphere of Commiphora leptophloeos than Mimosa tenuiflora. Mycorrhizal colonization and the number of infective propagules of AMF differed also between the seasons, being higher in the dry than the wet season. In total, fourteen AMF species were found in the rhizosphere of C. leptophloeos and twelve species were associated with M. tenuiflora. There was a predominance of the fungal genus Acaulospora, with seven species, followed by Gigaspora and Glomus. The species studied and the seasons differ in the composition and structure of the AMF community in the rhizosphere of the plants. The ecological significance of those differences needs to be examined further.  相似文献

Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) is a coccinellid of Asian origin that has recently invaded substantial parts of Europe and is suspected to affect native coccinellid populations through intraguild predation and competition for food. Previous work has shown that two species from the Calvia genus appeared to be well protected against H. axyridis predation. To deepen our understanding on chemical protection of Calvia spp. and the predation risk by H. axyridis, we tested for susceptibility and palatability of Calvia spp. and H. axyridis eggs against predation by H. axyridis neonate larvae. Results show that eggs of C. quatuordecimguttata were mostly not eaten by H. axyridis, while eggs of the congeneric C. decemguttata were found to be largely unprotected against predation by the invasive coccinellid. We also observed that H. axyridis first instars successfully cannibalized on conspecific eggs. Removing the surface chemicals from C. quatuordecimguttata eggs resulted in significantly reduced protection from being preyed upon by H. axyridis, while applying these extracts onto C. decemguttata and H. axyridis eggs resulted in increased protection against H. axyridis larvae. The importance of surface chemicals in the interactions between H. axyridis and native coccinellids was confirmed by GC–MS analysis, showing a high diversity of hydrocarbons located on the surface of C. quatuordecimguttata eggs, i.e. more than twice as many when compared to C. decemguttata. Survival of H. axyridis larvae feeding on eggs of C. quatuordecimguttata, C. decemguttata or conspecific eggs, from which surface chemicals were removed by washing them with hexane, was not different from survival on unwashed eggs.  相似文献

The colonization of an exotic species by native herbivores is more likely to occur if that herbivore is a generalist. There is little information on the life-history mechanisms used by native generalist insects to colonize exotic hosts and how these mechanisms are affected by host properties. We examined the ability of the generalist seed beetle Stator limbatus Horn to colonize an exotic species. We compared its host preference, acceptability, performance, and egg size when ovipositing and developing on two native (Pithecellobium dulce (Roxb.) Benth and Senegalia riparia (Kunth)) and one exotic legume species (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.)). We also analyzed the seed chemistry. We found that females recognize the exotic species as an unfavorable host for larval development and that they delayed oviposition and laid fewer and larger eggs on the exotic species than on the native species. Survivorship on the exotic host was 0%. Additionally, seeds of the native species contain five chemical compounds that are absent in the exotic species, and the exotic species contains three sterols, which are absent in the native legumes. Genetically based differences between beetles adapted to different hosts, plastic responses toward new hosts, and chemical differences among seeds are important in host colonization and recognition of the exotic host. In conclusion, the generalist nature of S. limbatus does not influence its ability to colonize L. leucocephala. Explanations for the colonization of exotic hosts by generalist native species and for the success of invasive species must be complemented with studies measuring local adaptation and plasticity.  相似文献

Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), an important energy sensor, is crucial for organism survival under adverse conditions. In this study, the roles of this gene under cold stress in a warm-water mud crab, Scylla paramamosain was investigated. The full-length cDNA (SpAMPK) was 1884 bp and its open reading frame of 1566 bp was isolated and characterized. The expressions of SpAMPK detected by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) in various tissues revealed that the highest expression was in the hepatopancreas. The profiles of SpAMPK gene in the hepatopancreas, chela muscle and gill were detected when the subadult crabs were exposed to the four temperature conditions of 10, 15, 20 and 25°C. The results showed that the expression patterns of SpAMPK mRNA in the three tissues were significantly higher when crabs were exposed to 15°C than the other three temperature treatments, while at 10°C treatment, the SpAMPK mRNA was lowest among the four temperature treatments. These findings suggested that the high expression of SpAMPK mRNA might initiate ATP-producing pathways to generate energy to cope with cold stress at 15°C treatment, which was slightly below the range of optimum temperatures; while treatment at 10°C, far lower than optima, the low expression of SpAMPK mRNA could reduce the energy expenditure and thus induce the crabs into cold anesthesia. The results of SpAMPK in this study might contribute to the understanding of the molecular mechanism of acclimation to cold hardiness in S. paramamosain.  相似文献

The sweet potato Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam., which has extrafloral nectaries, was visited by nine indigenous ant species in south Kyushu, Japan. These ant species were evaluated for their ability to remove the eggs of two lepidopteran species—Aedia leucomelas (Linnaeus) and Spodoptera litura (Fabricius)—through ant-exclusion experiments. The results showed that Tetramorium bicarinatum (Nylander), one of the dominant ant species, is an efficient predator of lepidopteran eggs. This ant species removed A. leucomelas eggs from ant-visited plants in six trials conducted from mid-July to mid-October, with high removal rates (90–100%) occurring from mid-September onward. On ant-excluded plants, only 0–18% of exposed eggs were removed by ants that accidentally invaded the plants. Tetramorium bicarinatum also removed egg masses and the hatchlings of S. litura. The mean percent area of egg-laden leaves eaten by S. litura larvae was lower on ant-visited plants (0.9%) than on ant-excluded plants (57.3%). In contrast, Formica japonica Motschulsky, another dominant ant species, was not observed removing the eggs or larvae of the lepidopteran species. These results show that certain indigenous ant species are efficient as biocontrol agents. Thus, individual ant species need to be investigated for their ability to control insect pests in various crops.  相似文献

Species composition and quantitative distribution of ichthyoplankton in the region of the oceanic seamounts of the Azores complex from 2000 to 2004 are considered. The spawning biomass of the main fishery item of this region—Atlantic jack Trachurus picturatus—is calculated. The ichthyoplankton of the Azores seamounts in the period under consideration included eggs and larvae of 60 fish species from 26 families. In the summer, 20 species of eggs and larvae from 11 families and, in winter, 57 species from 24 families were recorded. Larval Myctophidae and Gonastomatidae have the most mass in the plankton in both seasons. The eggs and larvae of commercial fish species (T. picturatus and Pacific mackerel Scomber japonicus) were recorded mainly in the cold period. The species and quantitative composition of ichthyoplankton of the South Azores seamounts is far more numerous than in the North Azores seamounts. The region of the seamounts of the South Azores complex, judging from the estimation of biomass of commercial fish with different methods, can be regarded as a reserve for the fishery of Russian vessels in the central eastern Atlantic.  相似文献

Small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) constitute a large, diverse, and functionally uncharacterized family of heat shock proteins. To gain insight regarding the function of sHSPs in insects, we identified genes encoding two sHSPs, Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3, from the rice pest Chilo suppressalis. The cDNAs of Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 encoded proteins of 206 and 216 amino acids with isoelectric points of 5.79 and 9.28, respectively. Further characterization indicated that both Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 lacked introns. Real-time quantitative PCR indicated that Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 were expressed at higher levels within the fat body as compared to other tissues (head, epidermis, foregut, midgut, hindgut, Malpighian tubules, and hemocytes). Expression of Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 was lowest in the hindgut and Malpighian tubules, respectively. Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 showed identical patterns in response to thermal stress from ?11 to 43 °C, and both genes were up-regulated by hot and cold temperatures. The mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) expression levels of Cshsp22.9b (KY701308) and Cshsp24.3 (KY701309) were highest after a 2-h exposure at 39 °C and started to decline at 42 °C. In response to cold temperatures, both Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 showed maximal expression after a 2-h exposure to ?3 °C. The two Cshsps were more responsive to hot than cold temperature stress and were not induced by mildly cold or warm temperatures. In conclusion, Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 could play a very important role in the regulation of physiological activities in C. suppressalis that are impacted by environmental stimuli.  相似文献

It has been acknowledged that land-use change has negative effects on genetic diversity and sex ratio in dioecious species, but less attention has been paid on the influence that land-use change has on the biotic interactions, especially between dioecious species and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. AM mutualism involves reciprocal transfer of carbohydrates and mineral nutrients between the host plant’s roots and these fungi. Here, we report spatial and temporal variation in AM colonization in dioecious wild Carica papaya plants growing in sites with different land use intensity. We tagged, recorded the basal stem circumference and collected roots of reproductive female and male Carica papaya plants in three wild sites during dry and rainy seasons of western Mexico. We also collected soil samples in each site to conduct soil chemical analyses. The sexes of C. papaya did not show significant differences in the frequency (percentage of root colonized by intraradical fungal structures) and abundance (length of intraradical hyphae) of AM fungi but the higher AM colonization was observed during the dry season, and in the site with the lowest disturbance. There was no relationship between soil chemistry and AM colonization. Overall, our findings suggest that land-use intensity has a negative effect on AM colonization and we discuss the consequences of habitat loss for the reproductive female and male plants, the implications of decreasing AM colonization for wild Carica papaya plants an important species that provides a source of genetic variation for the C. papaya varieties.  相似文献

Winter-active small mammals residing in seasonal environments employ many different behavioral, anatomical and physiological mechanisms to cope with cold. Herein we review research on survival mechanisms in cold employed by small mammals with emphasis on the families Soricidae, Muridae and Sciuridae. The focus of this review is on research delineating the role of seasonal changes in resting metabolic rate (RMR), nonshivering thermogenesis (NST), body mass, and communal nesting in enhancing winter survivorship of six species of small mammals (masked shrewSorex cinereus, short-tailed shrewBlarina brevicauda, southern red-backed voleClethrionomys gapperi, white-footed mousePeromyscus leucopus, deer mouseP. maniculatus, and southern flying squirrelGlaucomys volans) residing in the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania, USA. Each species shows good over-winter survivorship but exhibits a different suite of mechanisms to maximize survival in cold.B. brevicauda, S. cinereus, andG. volans show slight increases in RMR during winter, whereasPeromyscus andC. gapperi exhibit decreased RMR overwinter. All six species experience elevated NST in winter. The comparatively low RMR and NST ofG. volans during winter was attributable to a decreased energy expenditure due to a larger body mass, coupled with communal nesting in cavities of trees that provided insulation from low ambient temperatures. Squirrels nesting singly experienced a longer period of elevated NST in winter and higher mean NST year-round than did squirrels nesting communally. Energy conservation in the form of growth retardation in winter was exhibited byC. gapperi andS. cinereus but not the other species.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are known to promote plant growth and nutrient uptake, but their role in nitrogen (N) uptake still remains unclear. Therefore, a pot experiment was set up to evaluate the impacts of N addition and AM inoculation (Diversispora eburnea, Claroideoglomus etunicatum, Paraglomus occultum, and their mixture) on AM root colonization, plant biomass, N and P nutrition in Elymus nutans. Our results showed that AM root colonization was unaffected by N addition but was significantly affected by different AM fungal species. D. eburnea and C. etunicatum showed significant higher root colonization than P. occultum. The E. nutans exhibited the highest biomass when inoculated with D. eburnea and significantly higher than non-mycorrhizal (the control) regardless of N addition. Under N addition treatment, D. eburnea significantly enhanced P content of roots, N content of shoots and roots, while AM mixture significantly enhanced shoot P content compared with non-mycorrhizal. However, N and P content in shoots and roots did not significantly vary among treatments when no N was added. In addition, inoculation with C. etunicatum and P. occultum showed no significant effect on plant biomass, N and P content regardless of N addition. In conclusion, this study revealed that the plant response to N addition depends on AM fungal species and also confirmed that significant functional diversity exists among AM fungal species.  相似文献

Serendipita indica is an axenically cultivable fungus, which colonizes a broad range of plant species including the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Root colonization by this endophyte leads to enhanced plant fitness and performance and promotes resistance against different biotic and abiotic stresses. The involvement of MPK6 in this mutualistic interaction had been previously shown with an mpk6 A. thaliana mutant, which failed to respond to S. indica colonization. Here, we demonstrate that mpk6 roots are significantly less colonized by S. indica compared to wild-type roots and the foliar application of plant hormones, ethylene, or jasmonic acid, restores the colonization rate at least to the wild-type level. Further, hormone-treated mpk6 plants show typical S. indica-induced growth promotion effects. Moreover, expression levels of several genes related to plant defense and hormone signaling are significantly changed at different colonization phases. Our results demonstrate that the successful root colonization by S. indica depends on efficient suppression of plant immune responses. In A. thaliana, this process relies on intact hormone signaling in which MPK6 seems to play a pivotal role.  相似文献
