Hormonal changes during non-maternal infant care have been demonstrated in many cooperatively breeding bird species, some monogamous rodents and two species of New World primates. Coevolution of hormones and social traits may have provided for the different breeding systems that occur today. Several hormones have been shown to covary with the breeding systems of vertebrates. Elevated levels of the hormone prolactin with male parenting behaviours are common to many birds, rodents and the callitrichid monkeys Callithrix jacchus and Saguinus oedipus. In birds, prolactin may be elevated in both male and female breeders during various stages of nest building, egg laying, incubating and feeding of young. Testosterone levels appear to have an inverse relationship to prolactin levels during infant care in birds and rodents, but this relationship has not been examined for primates. In cooperatively breeding birds, helpers who remain at the nest also have elevated levels of prolactin when displaying parental care behaviours. Prolactin levels are elevated in helper callitrichid monkeys during the postpartum period. Monogamous male rodents demonstrate elevated prolactin levels with parental care behaviour but, in contrast to the birds, the mechanisms mediating prolactin increase appear to differ for male and female rodents. Two factors may influence male parental behaviours and hormonal changes: stimuli from the pregnant female and stimuli from the newborn pups; whereas maternal behaviours are influenced by the maternal hormones of the female and the pup stimuli. An experiential factor may also influence male parental behaviours. Neuropeptides such as oxytocin and vasopressin appear to be involved in male rodent parental care and there may be an interaction between a series of hormones and neurosecretions and stimuli from mates and pups. Studies of Saguinus oedipus, the cotton-top tamarin, suggest that prolactin levels are responsive to stimuli from contact with infants and the level of infant care experience influences the levels of prolactin with male infant care. Father tamarins also have elevated levels of prolactin before the birth of infants suggesting that cues from the pregnant female are important. Prolactin's role in parental care may have evolved from prolactin's role in other reproductive functions. Hormonal regulation of non-maternal care may occur due to a complex interaction of many hormones and neurotransmitters. Studies described here should provide the impetus for further work on parental care hormones in a wide variety of primates.  相似文献

Male olive baboons decreased the probability of their being threatened by other males, and increased their relative dominance, if they were carrying infants during encounters with other males. Carrying of infants by males could be hazardous to the infants. However, males also showed other behaviours which were beneficial to infants. Choice of infant for ‘exploting’ and certain forms of ‘caretaking’ by males varied with the age of the infant. Both exploitation and caretaking by males were almost completely restricted to those infants which were born after the males' immigration into the infants' troop. Males which exploited infants most often also showed most caretaking behaviours and had resided in that troop the longest. Males that had infants carried against them by other males most often were the most dominant and the youngest sexually mature males. Males still residing in their natal troop chose their matrilineal siblings most often for exploiting and certain caretaking behaviours. The overall effects of close male-infant relations on the fitness of the male and the infant are discussed.  相似文献

A germ-free isolator system was designed and constructed, It permits a sterile caesarean section and rearing of an infant under germ-free conditions. The system includes a plastic surgical and rearing isolator and two supply isolators; one of the supply isolators served as a transport mobile unit for the transfer of the newborn from the operation room to the neonatal intensive care unit. All members of staff participating in the sterile caesarean section and in the postnatal care of the germ-free newborn underwent to a special training and all of them were able to meet the high requirements of this work. The surgery itself was without complications, the newborn was absolutely sterile up to the age of 1 month; afterwards the infant was gradually colonized with selected strains of bacteria and thus prepared for conventialization. In the course of this work further possibilities of application of gnotobiological techniques in pediatrics were proposed (e.g. care of premature, high-risk neonates).  相似文献

Two high-ranking adult male chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) of M group in the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania, tried to get a newborn female infant of an adult female who was born in M group. The mother was not seen to mate with these adult males during the probable conception cycle of the infant, but she disappeared from the group during the later cycle, when she may have been inseminated by a male of one of the neighboring unit groups. The adult males failed to get the infant because the grandmother of the newborn and her female friend cooperated to protect the mother and infant from attacks by the males. The sexual selection hypothesis for infanticide by adult male chimpanzees holds for this observed case. The sudden disappearance of another infant, a healthy female, strongly suggests the killing of female infants too. Therefore, the asserted male-biased infanticide in chimpanzees appears to be less tenable.  相似文献

A clinical classification of perinatal morbidity and mortality should be based upon the pathophysiological mechanisms which affect the fetus and newborn infant, resulting in this morbidity and mortality. Each mechanism is a distinctive disturbance which may be regarded as the common pathway for expression of insults to the fetus and newborn infant arising from a wide variety of obstetric abnormalities and specific disease entities. The following classification of mechanisms incorporating the whole spectrum of perinatal problems is proposed: (1) developmental abnormality; (2) immaturity and prematurity; (3) chronic fetal insufficiency; (4) acute fetal insufficiency; (5) newborn respiratory failure; (6) blood group incompatibility; (7) infection, and (8) trauma.  相似文献

A case of Campylobacter infection in a 2-day old infant is described. The possibility for a newborn infant to get infected with Campylobacter jejuni directly from the infected mother in the process of parturition is considered. The methods of the laboratory diagnosis of Campylobacter infection, including the main principles of the identification of Campylobacter species, are presented. The possibility of using the enzyme immunoassay for the serological diagnosis of Campylobacter infection is shown. The possible ways and factors of the transfer of this infection to newborn infants are discussed.  相似文献

The mechanism responsible for the decrease in ventilation during breathing of low fractional concentration of inspired O2 in the newborn infant is poorly understood. The present study tested the hypothesis that endogenous opiates account for this ventilatory decrease. Eleven healthy newborn infants breathed 15% O2, balance N2 for 5 min following an injection of saline and following an injection of naloxone. Neither injection caused a change in minute ventilation (VE) or ventilatory pattern when the infants were breathing room air. However, the decreased ventilation during hypoxia following naloxone was significantly less than that following saline. VE dropped about 14% following saline but only about 4% following naloxone. However, the adult ventilatory response to hypoxemia, i.e., a relatively sustained increase in VE, was not attained. Naloxone had no influence on the occurrence of periodic breathing during hypoxemia. Thus in the healthy full-term newborn infant, endogenous opiates account only for a part of the decreased ventilation during hypoxemia.  相似文献

In the newborn infant, the diaphragm seems badly adapted to perform the burden of respiratory work. Indeed, due to the large angle of insertion on the rib cage and the small area of apposition, the flat diaphragm of the newborn infant seems better designed to suck in the rib cage rather than air. To better understand this paradox, and get insight in the structure-function relationship, the anatomical connections between the diaphragm and the rib cage were studied in 16 infants of various postmenstrual and postnatal ages. It was concluded (1) that the diaphragm inserts on the rib cage border only in the anterior costo-diaphragmatic triangle. From antero-laterally to posteriorly it inserts at increasingly greater distance from the rib cage border; (2) that the dorsal diaphragm ends its free course at the 11th rib and continues caudally as a spur ending between the 12th rib and the crista iliaca. From echographic studies of the right diaphragm with simultaneous measurement of the caudad displacement of the diaphragm and abdominal circumference change, the dynamics of the diaphragmatic movements could be better understood. It was concluded that, in contrast with the adult diaphragm, acting as a piston within the rib cage, the diaphragm of the newborn infant acts as a below moving mainly in the posterior part.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Parental care in mammals is influenced by sensory stimuli from infants, such as sight and sound, and by changes in the hormone levels of caretakers. To determine the responsiveness of common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) adult males with and without previous experience in caretaking to newborn sensory cues, we exposed twelve males to infant vocalization recordings and assessed their hormonal and behavioral responses. Males were placed in the testing cage for 10 min under two conditions: (a) control condition (exposure to adult conspecific vocalization recordings), and (b) experimental condition (exposure to infant vocalization recordings). We recorded the frequency of approach towards the sound source, the time spent near it and locomotion frequency of males in the cage under both conditions. Blood samples were collected after each test for cortisol, measured by the enzyme immunoassay method. Infant vocalization affects the behavioral and hormonal responses of non-reproductive male common marmosets. All males approached and spent more time near the sound source and showed an increase in locomotion during infant vocalization exposure compared to the control condition. Successive exposure to infant vocalization increased the responsiveness in inexperienced males. Cortisol levels were significantly higher following infant vocalization exposure compared to the control condition. These findings support the assumption that sound stimuli from the newborn are critical in initiating and maintaining caretaker responsiveness and that cortisol seems to be important for alertness to sensory stimuli, modulating their motivation to interact with infants.  相似文献

Background

Unintentional falls and poisonings are major causes of death and disability among infants. Although guidelines are available to prevent these injuries, safety behaviours are not performed by parents, causing unnecessary risks. Little is known about safety behaviours of first-time parents and whether they behave according to these guidelines.

Aims/Objectives/Purpose

The objective of this study was to compare safety behaviours of first-time parents with those of non-first-time parents and to determine correlates of unsafe behaviour of parents of infants. We used self-report questionnaires to assess safety behaviours in a cross-sectional study sample.

Methods

A total of 1439 parents visiting a preventive youth healthcare centre in the Netherlands were invited to complete a questionnaire with regard to the prevention of falls and poisonings. Parents were categorized into first-time parents and non-first-time parents. Correlates of parents'' child safety behaviours were determined using multiple logistic regression analyses.

Results/Outcome

Most respondents were mothers (93.2%); 48.2% of families were first-time parents. The mean age of the infants was 7.2 months (SD 1.1; range 4–12), 51.8% were boys, and 34.5% of infants could crawl. First-time parents were more likely not to have a stair gate installed (OR 16.46; 95% CI 12.36–21.93); were more likely to store cleaning products unsafely (OR 4.55; 95% CI 3.59–5.76); and were more likely to store medicines unsafely (OR 2.90; 95% CI 2.31–3.63) than non-first-time parents. First-time parents were more likely to not have a window guard installed (OR 1.52; 95% CI 1.08–2.15) (all P<0.05).

Discussion/Conclusion

First-time parents are not well prepared for the safety of their infant, causing unnecessary risks. The various parents'' safety behaviours were influenced by different variables, for example, age of the infant, crawling of the infant, mother''s educational level, mother''s ethnicity, self-efficacy, vulnerability, severity.  相似文献

To determine whether disruption of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-VEGF receptor (VEGFR) signaling in the newborn has long-term effects on lung structure and function, we injected 1-day-old newborn rat pups with a single dose of Su-5416, a VEGFR inhibitor, or vehicle (controls). Lungs from infant (3-wk-old) and adult (3- to 4-mo-old) rats treated with Su-5416 as newborns showed reductions in arterial density (82 and 31%, respectively) and alveolar counts (45 and 29%) compared with controls. Neonatal treatment with Su-5416 increased right ventricle weight to body wt ratios (4.2-fold and 2.0-fold) and pulmonary arterial wall thickness measurements (2.7-fold and 1.6-fold) in infant and adult rats, respectively, indicating marked pulmonary hypertension. We conclude that treatment of newborn rats with the VEGFR inhibitor Su-5416 impaired pulmonary vascular growth and postnatal alveolarization and caused pulmonary hypertension and that these effects were long term, persisting well into adulthood.  相似文献

The occurrence of double aneuploidy in the same individual is a relatively rare phenomenon. We describe twin newborns with typical clinical features of Down's syndrome, of which one revealed 48,XXY,+21 GTG-band karyotype. The second newborn died 2 days after its birth, and was clinically diagnosed having Down syndrome. Due to the same clinical features of the twins, the common placenta and amniotic sac, we speculate that they were monozygotics and as a result the second newborn should also be a Klinefelter. The purpose of this report is to present a rare case of possible coincidence of double aneuploidy in newborn twins. A review of the literature showed that double trisomy (48,XXY,+21) in a twin newborn infant has never occurred.  相似文献

Escherichia coli strains isolated from the alimentary tract of 68 weaned and 44 unweaned pigs with diarrhoea in various parts of Hungary, were tested for the presence of pilus antigens K88, K99 and 987P. K88 was detected in 30% of the strains from newborn pigs and in 12% of the strains isolated from weaned pigs. One strain carried K99. Based on agglutination test and immunoelectron microscopic studies with specific absorbed antisera, five non-haemolytic E. coli strains isolated from newborn pigs were found to produce so-called 987P pili. Three of these strains were designated serologically as O8:K85:H--,987P+ and two as O141: K--:H--,987P+. The Y1 cell assay, the infant mouse assay, and the ligated intestinal loop assay in less than 3-week-old pigs indicated that none of the strains produced heat-labile enterotoxin but all produced a heat-stable enterotoxin detectable in infant mice and in pig loops (STa). All the strains induced diarrhoea in newborn, colostrum deprived pigs and colonized the lower small intestine by adhesion to the villous epithelium. The results have confirmed earlier findings about adhesive virulence attributes caused by 987P pili.  相似文献

The behavioral interactions of a primiparous lowland gorilla and her newborn female infant were observed and recorded during the birth of the infant and the subsequent 27 hours. The mother's behavior, initially unresponsive to the infant, progressed rapidly through a series of interactions that are described as preliminary to, and perhaps essential for the ultimate development of appropriate maternal behavior. The relationship between different critical activities, such as: (1) the ingestion of birth fluids by the mother and the establishment of initial contact with the infant, (2) the progression from impersonal contact to ventral-ventral contact, and (3) the coordination between the mother's and infant's vocalizations and activity preceding nursing are described, analyzed, and interpreted.  相似文献

Propionic acidemia (PA) is an inborn error of metabolism caused by the genetic deficiency of propionyl-CoA carboxylase (PCC). By disrupting the alpha-subunit gene of PCC, we created a mouse model of PA (PCCA(-/-)), which died in 24-36 h after birth due to accelerated ketoacidosis. A postnatal, liver-specific PCC expression via a transgene in a far lower level than that in wild-type liver, allowed PCCA(-/-) mice to survive the newborn and early infant periods, preventing a lethal fit of ketoacidosis (SAP(+)PCCA(-/-) mice). Interestingly, SAP(+)PCCA(-/-) mice, in which the transgene expression increased after the late infant period, continued to grow normally while mice harboring a persistent low level of PCC died in the late infant period due to severe ketoacidosis, clearly suggesting the requirement of increased PCC supplementation in proportion to the animal growth. Based on these results, we propose a two-step strategy to achieve an efficient PA prevention in human patients: a partial PCC supplementation in the liver during the newborn and early infant periods, followed by a larger amount of supplementation in the late infant period.  相似文献

In this study on Java macaques themain characteristics of the mother-infant relationship during infants' first 10 days have been elaborated. Early mother and infant behaviour is described and early interactions between mothers and their young have been analyzed. Observations and trend analyses of early behaviours like ventro-ventral contact behaviour, being on nipple, and explorative behaviour, make it clear that Java macaque infants play an important role in the early development of mother-infant interactions. In contrast to the rhesus and the stumptailed infant, the young Java macaque appears to develop a great variety of behaviours in its first 10 days. Whereas the infant's behaviour gains in complexity and social initiative, the mother becomes increasingly more passive and self-oriented. Early mother-infant interaction can be characterized by mutual adjustment.  相似文献

We compared measures of laterality obtained by two observational sampling procedures (a 15-min focal-dyad sampling with continuous recording, and a scan and instantaneous sampling), using 10 mother-infant dyads of captive olive baboons. The two measures of lateral biases for maternal cradling, infant nipple preference, infant head position and maternal carrying, but not those for infant retrieval, were positively and significantly correlated. Our results clearly show that the two sampling procedures produce equally sensitive measures of lateral bias for both the maternal and the infant behaviours. They also provide evidence of asymmetries in mean bout length and therefore suggest that recording bouts is not necessarily the best measure of lateral bias. Taken together, these results show empirically that the scan and instantaneous sampling procedure does not lead to a lack of independence of data points, as previously assumed.  相似文献

An evolutionary perspective on human infant sleep physiology suggests that parent-infant cosleeping, practiced under safe conditions, might be beneficial to both mothers and infants. However, cosleeping is not part of mainstream parenting ideology in the United States or the United Kingdom, and little evidence is available to indicate whether, and under what circumstances, parents sleep with their newborn infants. We present data from an anthropological investigation into the practices and attitudes of new and experienced parents of newborn infants regarding parent-infant sleeping arrangements in a community in the northeast of England. Despite not having contemplated cosleeping prior to the birth, new parents in our sample found it to be a convenient nighttime caregiving strategy, and one which was practiced regularly.
