The trophic spectrum of tilapia Oreochromis aureus (Steindachner 1864), was determined by stomach content analysis in 153 organisms collected during 1993 in Michoacán-Guerrero, México. The feeding status of the fish at the time of observation was evaluated by the examination of fat surrounding the gut, gastric replection and the condition coefficient. The quantitative evaluation of the food items was carried out by the combination of the following analysis: Frequency of Occurrence, Volumetric Method, Volumetric Mean Index and Relative Importance Index. Diet consisted of: detritus and vascular plant residues as a primary food; unicellular algae as secondary food; and remains of insects and fish, graminean seeds, filamentous algae, cladocerans, ostracods, rotifers and copepods as occasional food. We detected a difference in food preferences between juveniles and adults and a variation in the consumption proportions of some food items during the rainy and dry seasons. Thus, we concluded that O. aureus is an omnivorous species with preference for detritus and vascular plant remain. Feeding seems to be determined by the abundance of food items found in the habitat and adults showed a trend to eat only detritus. Feeding does not seem to be a limiting factor in the development of the tilapia in Infiernillo dam.  相似文献

We examined the taxonomic composition, abundance, and size of food items consumed by young-of-year, juvenile, and adult Colorado River cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki pleuriticus) in order to determine the degree of diet overlap occurring in a relatively unproductive, high-elevation, mountain stream. Overall, we identified 49 Families of insects representing nine Orders, and 4 other Classes of organisms in the diets of the trout sampled and saw no evidence of piscivory. Each size class of fish consumed significantly different taxa and significantly different sizes of food items. However, despite these differences, the proportional similarity index (PSI) indicated that there was considerable overlap in taxa and sizes of organisms consumed by the three size classes. The greatest overlap occurred between young-of-year and juveniles, and between juveniles and adults. Both the relatively high proportion of small items in the adult diet and the slow growth rate of adults in these streams indicate that food may be limiting for adults and that intraspecific competition between adults and smaller size classes may be high.  相似文献

Gelatinous plankton is an important food resource for several species of fishes in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Some fish depend heavily on these organisms and are specialized to feed on ctenophores, salps and medusae, while others only consume gelatinous plankton occasionally. We hypothesize that consumption of gelatinous plankton by fishes represents an alternative food resource when primary prey are not available during cold periods in the study area. To determine seasonal variations of gelatinous plankton consumption by fishes, data samples were grouped into cold and warm periods. A total of 64,567 stomachs belonging to 106 species of fish were analysed, of which 32,943 (51%) contained food items. Of those containing food items, 2719 (8.2%), from 38 fish species, contained gelatinous items. Fourteen species ingested gelatinous in warm period, nine in cold period, and 15 in both periods. The proportion of stomachs with gelatinous was significantly greater during the cold period. Ctenophores were the most predominant prey in both periods, followed by salps and medusae. Consumption of ctenophores, salps and medusae was unevenly distributed within the area during the different periods. Classification methods (group average sorting utilizing Bray–Curtis similarity measures based on log (X + 1) identified eight areas of consumption. SIMPER (similarity percentages) analyses revealed that nine fish species contributed most to gelatinous plankton consumption. The seasonal and spatial variation of gelatinous consumption by fish would be related to the availability of food in each period. Strategies of gelatinous consumption, including survival, feeding opportunities and prey specialization, are discussed.  相似文献

Factors influencing the choice of invertebrate food by early feeding trout are sought, special attention being given to the dimensions of the prey. The stomach contents of fish of similar age feeding on lake plankton and drifting stream fauna are compared. Little consistent preference was displayed for the smaller planktonic organisms but prey size was of importance in the distribution of stream benthos among predators of different lengths. The width of the prey was of greater significance to selection than the mean volume or the area of the largest surface of the food items. When the fish were in obvious competition for food the correlation between predator length and all prey dimensions improved.  相似文献

Parasites that are transmitted through predator–prey interactions may be used as indicators of trophic relationships between organisms. Yet, they are rarely used as such in the construction of topological (predator–prey) food webs. We constructed food webs of vertebrate trophic interactions using observed diet alone, trophically transmitted parasites alone, and the combination of the two based on data from 31 species of fish from the Bothnian Bay, Finland. The fish food web contained 530 links derived from observed diet, 724 links inferred from parasitism, and 1,058 links calculated from a combination of both stomach contents and parasites. This sub-web constructed from stomach contents had a mean of 17.1 links per fish species, while that using parasites had 23.4 links per fish. Combining the two diet indicators yielded 34.1 links per fish species, illustrating the complementarity of the two methods. Mean number of prey species per fish species was 12.5 using observed diet items, 15.8 using parasites, and 24.5 using both measures together. Mean number of predators per fish species was 7.4 using observed diet, 11.7 using parasites and 15.0 using both. A positive correlation was found between the mean number of parasites and the number of prey taxa in the diet among the fishes. Omnivorous fish had the highest diversity of both parasite species and prey items, while benthophagous fish had among the lowest. Mean total abundance and mean total prevalence of parasites correlated positively with fish size, with piscivores being the largest with the highest abundance and prevalence, while planktivores and benthivores had the lowest. Trophically transmitted parasites may be used to help construct vertebrate sub-webs and derive information about food web processes. Parasites alone provided equivalent if not more information than observed diet. However, resolution is improved by using parasites and observed diet together.  相似文献

The food spectrum and seasonal dynamics of feeding of the stone sculpin Paracottus knerii in the littoral of southern Baikal is investigated. Altogether, 29 species of invertebrates are recorded. All year round, the bulk of food, similarly to other areas of the lake, consisted of amphipods; other groups of zoobenthos were represented insignificantly. The significance of particular amphipod species in the food of fish depended on their ecological and morphofunctional traits. The seasonal changes in the species composition and the ratio of food items in the food depended on life cycles of fish and on the migrations of zoobenthic organisms.  相似文献

To assess the feeding habits of plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L., and dab, Limanda limanda (L.), within Carmarthen Bay, three sampling techniques were used: benthic trawling and surf-zone push-netting were undertaken during the feeding season for the gut contents of plaice and dab (age groups 0-IV) and of 0-group brill, Scophthalmus rhombus , to be analysed in detail, and a benthic macro-fauna grab survey covered the trawled ground to assess the distribution of food species in relation to gut contents. Plaice consumed commonly-occurring food species whereas dab took any available food. The main items were the same for both species, but secondary food preferences differed. Variations in gut contents within species, for the same sized fish, chiefly resulted from the spatial distribution of fish and not seasonal variations in the benthic macro-fauna. The length and not the age of fish primarily determined the selection of food organisms.  相似文献

It was revealed that intestine and whole-body amylolytic activity (AA) in juvenile fish serving as potential feeding items for piscivores significantly decreases in the presence of Cu and Zn ions within a wide range (0.1–25 mg/l) of concentrations in vitro. In most of the studied fish species, Cu and Zn decrease the activities of carbohydrases in the intestine mucosa stronger than in the whole-body. On the other hand, in piscivore-facultative benthivore perch, which have the least AA, the inhibiting effect of Cu and Zn ions is 1.5 to 2 times higher in the whole body than in the intestine. The study data suggest that Cu and Zn ions at concentrations found in organisms that serve as fish food may not only reduce the rate of initial stages of carbohydrates hydrolysis in the juvenile fish intestine, but also considerably decrease the potential contribution of the food objects to the digestion processes in typical and facultative piscivores.  相似文献

Floodplain rivers worldwide are threatened by loss of connectivity to their floodplains and hence reduced benefits from floodplain energy subsidies. Dryland rivers with ‘boom and bust’ ecological responses to flooding and extended dry periods may be particularly vulnerable. This paper describes variations in dietary composition of three fish species of contrasting trophic position in dryland floodplain lagoons with variable flood inundation and drying histories. The study species were Ambassis agassizii - a microphagic carnivore, Leiopotherapon unicolor - a carnivore/omnivore, and Nematalosa erebi - an algivore/detritivor. Despite the range of food items recorded in fish guts, each species fed mostly on relatively few food categories and few food items within each category. Most of the spatial (i.e. among lagoons) and temporal dietary variation was associated with different proportional contributions of these food items. Given the absence or low magnitude of flooding during the study period, temporal changes in diets of the three species are probably the result of successional changes in composition of invertebrate prey as the dry season progressed. The focus of each fish species on relatively few food categories and a few reliable food items within each category may be the most profitable foraging strategy when food resources are limiting in progressively drying floodplain lagoons.  相似文献

From November 1991 to October 1993, 980 specimens of the characid Brycinus nurse were collected from Asa reservoir to examine its diet. The diet was analyzed using the frequency of occurrence, numerical and gravimetric methods. Two hundred and sixty nine (27.45%) of the stomachs examined were empty. The fish was an omnivore feeding extensively on a wide array of plant and animal food items. These consisted of 9 families, 10 genera and 10 species. The most extensively consumed plant food item was aquatic plant parts which occurred in 63.88% of the stomachs, and accounted for 6.06% by number and 12.10% by weight while the ephemeropteran, Povilla adusta was the most dominant animal food item, occurring in 50.92% of the stomachs, and accounting for 11.98% by number and 11.86% by weight. Conversely, the least consumed plant food item was Volvox occurring in 4.49% of the stomachs and accounting for 0.18% by number and 0.35% by weight, while the fish Barbus sp. was the least consumed animal food item occurring in 0.51% of the stomachs, accounting for 0.03% by number and 1.62% by weight. New food items not previously recorded such as a watermite. Aspatharia sinuata and Barbus callipterus were found in the stomach contents. The nonspecific feeding regime of the fish and its ability to utilize different food items effectively was what accounted for the prominence and wide distribution of the fish in the lake.  相似文献

The diet of the larvae of the sciaenid fish Leiostomus xanthuruscollected within the Mississippi River plume differs from thatof larvae collected in adjacent Gulf of Mexico shelf waters.Larvae collected in plume water had eaten twice as many foodorganisms as had larvae collected in shelf waters. Larvae collectedwithin the plume had eaten mostly small food organisms (tintinnids,copepod nauplii, pelecypod veligers and invertebrate eggs),whereas larvae collected in shelf waters had eaten mostly largerfood items (copepodite and adult copepods). Differences in theabundance of food organisms in and differences in the photicenvironments of these water masses may account for the differencesin diet.  相似文献

Using an extended method for calculating food consumption by diversified bird communities taking into account variability of diet, energy content and digestibility of different food items within a diet, it was possible to calculate the energy consumption of the bird community in eutrophic Lake Esrom. As the production of food items and energy flow in Lake Esrom have been well studied, it was possible to relate the bird community to the trophic web. Birds consumed approximately 20% of the annual macrophyte production (excluding roots and rhizomes), and 4% of the annual zoobenthos production. The annual consumption of fish by birds corresponded to 22% of the annual consumption by piscivorous fish measured in kJ, and was almost the same as the commercial fishery catch. However, the consumption of fish by birds consisted mainly of non-piscivorous fish, in contrast to the commercial catch. In Lake Esrom, the birds have a significant role in the energy flow of consumers within the ecosystem. This result indicates that bird communities should be included in future studies of lake ecology. Also, competition between fish and birds is potentially significant.  相似文献

The buccal cavity of an herbivorous fish, Cirrhinus mrigala, was investigated by scanning electron microscopy to determine its surface ultrastructure. The buccal cavity shows significant adaptive modifications in relation to food and feeding ecology of the fish. The buccal cavity of the fish is of modest size and limited capacity, which is considered an adaptation with respect to the small‐sized food items primarily consumed by the fish that could be accommodated in a small space. Modification of surface epithelial cells, on the upper jaw, into characteristic structures—the unculi—is considered an adaptation to browse or scrap, to grasp food materials, e.g., algal felts, and to protect the epithelial surface against abrasions, likely to occur during their characteristic feeding behavior. Differentiation of the highly specialized lamellar organ on the anterior region of the palate could be an adaptation playing a significant role in the selection, retention, and sorting out of palatable food particles from the unpalatable items ingested by the fish. The filamentous epithelial projections and the lingulate epithelial projections on the palatal organ in the posterior region of the palate are considered to serve a critical function in final selection, handling, maneuvering, and propelling the food particles toward the esophagus. The abundance of different categories of taste buds in the buccal cavity suggests that gustation is well developed and the fish is highly responsive in the evaluation and the selection of the preferred palatable food items. The secretions of mucous cells in the buccal cavity are associated with multiple functions—particle entrapment, lubrication of the buccal epithelium and food particles to assist smooth passage of food, and to protect the epithelium from possible abrasion. These morphological characteristics ensure efficient working of the buccal cavity in the assessment of the quality and palatability of ingested food, their retention and transport toward the esophagus. The fish fauna of an eulittoral mud flat was investigated at Sylt Island (North Sea) with special regard to its food uptake. During the course of a year the following species were caught:Pomatoschistus microps, Anguilla anguilla (elvers),Zoarces viviparus, andGasterosteus aculeatus. Considering the potentially available food, the most abundant organisms of the benthos were harpacticoids and nematodes, whereas in the phytal layer gastropods and gammarids were dominant. The benthic biomass was found to be greatest in spring, while phytal organisms were most abundant in late summer. The greatest fish density was stated in September 1974 though onlyP. microps was present. The fish biomass was highest in spring when the elvers appeared. The main food ofP. microps was epibenthos; in the diet ofA. anguilla phytal organisms dominated over epibenthos, inG. aculeatus suprabenthic organisms were also present. The most prominent food component by biomass was gammarids in all investigated fish, whereas harpacticoids were only dominant in number. During the course of the year the biomass of ingested food yielded highest values in summer and autumn, but lowest in winter. A very great predatory activity was found in September 1974, which possibly caused a grazing effect on harpacticoids. An estimation of the turnover rate of small-sized fish in this month led to a value of 70 mg dry weight m?2 · d?1.  相似文献

Studies on the food and feeding habits of Eutropius niloticus in Lake Kainji, Nigeria revealed that the fish is omnivorous but fed more on insects than on any other food. The most important insects were Povilla adusta Navas nymphs and imagos and adults of the common grasshoppers. Fish, particularly the clupeids Sierrathrissa leonensis Thys Van den Audernaerde and Pellonula afzeliusi Johnels, also formed an important part of the diet. There was seasonal variation of organisms selected for food and there were variations in the dietary items selected by different age groups. Accumulation of fat was found to correlate with seasonal feeding intensity. E. niloticus serves as food for other fishes.  相似文献

It was shown that stimulation by food odor (aquatic extract of food organisms, 10?2 and 10?3 g/l) does not cause shifts in gustatory preferences in carp Cyprinus carpio and cod Gadus morhua but modifies gustatory behavior. The level of consumption by carp of control granules and granules with attractive, by taste, L-proline (0.1 M) or deterrent L-lysine (0.1 M) (item by item presentation of granules) and by cod of control granules and granules with indifferent, to it, L-asparagine (0.1 M) (presentation of 10 granules simultaneously) is similar prior to and during olfactory stimulation. In the presence of food odor, the duration of taste testing for most types of granules, as well as the number of repeated graspings of granules with an attractive taste do not change in fish. At the same time, granules with indifferent or repulsive gustatory properties are rejected and repeatedly grasped by fish against the background of food odor more frequently than in water without odor. Olfactory stimulation leads to a considerable increase in the average number of graspings per one grasped granule with an indifferent or repulsive taste. Such behavior manifested by fish in the presence of food odor in response to granules with unattractive gustatory properties is apparently caused by the contradiction between the information coming via different chemosensory canals—olfactory and gustatory. The obtained results indicate that food stimulation caused by food odor in nature can lead to an increase in the actual consumption of only those accessible food items that have an attractive taste for fish.  相似文献

The relative importance of bay habitats, consisting of mangrove creeks and channel, seagrass beds, and mud and sand flats, as feeding grounds for a number of fish species was studied in Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar, Tanzania, using gut content analysis and stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen. Gut content analysis revealed that within fish species almost the same food items were consumed regardless of the different habitats in which they were caught. Crustaceans (mainly copepods, crabs and shrimps) were the preferred food for most zoobenthivores and omnivores, while fishes and algae were the preferred food for piscivores and herbivores, respectively. The mean δ13C values of fishes and food items from the mangrove habitats were significantly depleted to those from the seagrass habitats by 6·9 and 9·7‰ for fishes and food items, respectively, and to those from the mud and sand flats by 3·5 and 5·8‰, respectively. Fishes and food items from the mud and sand flats were significantly depleted as compared to those of the seagrass habitats by 3·4 and 3·9‰, for fishes and food, respectively. Similar to other studies done in different geographical locations, the importance of mangrove and seagrass themselves as a primary source of carbon to higher trophic levels is limited. The different bay habitats were all used as feeding grounds by different fish species. Individuals of the species Gerres filamentosus , Gerres oyena , Lethrinus lentjan , Lutjanus fulviflamma , Pelates quadrilineatus and Siganus sutor appeared to show a connectivity with respect to feeding between different habitats by having δ13C values which were in-between those of food items from two neighbouring habitats. This connectivity could be a result of either daily tidal migrations or recent ontogenetic migration.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The feeding habits of Cobitis taenia were studied by means of monthly samples taken over a 2-year period, October 1972-October 1974, from two sites, one on the River Great Ouse at Newport Pagnell and the other at some neighbouring gravel pits. Dietury components, seasonal variation in these components, and seasonal and diurnal variation in feeding intensity were examined. The ecological niche of the food items and their size range are discussed, since both these factors appeared important in governing the micro-habitat of the fish.
The feeding activity followed a seasonal cycle with little or no feeding in the winter and a high level of feeding activity in mid-summer.
The diet showed a predominance of small food items, such as chydorids. copepods and rhizopods. These items varied in occurrence during the feeding period which appeared to be related to their own abundance, pointing to non-seleclive feeding by the fish. The small size and benthic habits of the food items, many of which are closely associated with surface layers of mud and weed, indicated a preference by Cobitis taenia (L.) for feeding in this type ot habitat and on this type of food, in contrast to the stone loach. Noemacheilus barbatulus (L.), which is believed to inhabit stony areas and take larger food items.  相似文献

通过对汉江中下游水文特点和渔业资源状况的研究,分析了该区域水文与饵料生物、渔业资源的关系。结果表明:汉江中下游中段的水文变化趋势适宜于产漂流性卵鱼类的繁殖;由于水文状况,汉江中下游的鱼类生长与繁殖季节晚于长江干流;4—6月的水文状况适宜下游江段饵料生物的生长;汉江中下游的饵料生物丰富,为鱼类的生长与繁殖提供了良好条件;汉江下游主要经济鱼类年龄组成简单,种群中以小型鱼类为主。  相似文献

The present paper provides the results of the study on feeding of juvenile (underyearlings and age 2+) sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) caught in the Danube River in 2002–2003. The full spectrum of food items found in the fish stomachs was identified. The seasonal patterns of food composition are revealed. It is shown that juvenile sterlet in the Danube feeds mainly on larvae of chironomids and trichopterans, amphipods, and leeches. The organisms typical for lithophilic and lithorheophilic biocenoses play considerable role in the feeding of sterlet. Mean daily gains of body length and weight in the sterlet underyearlings are calculated.  相似文献
