The edible berry species Vaccinium sieboldii, Vaccinium ciliatum, and Vaccinium oldhami are deciduous shrubs found growing at low altitudes in Japan. They are classified in the same section. Of these, the former two species are listed as endangered species. The present status of these two species was surveyed. V. sieboldii was found in a very limited range, 65 km wide, in central Japan. Many plants are thought to have been lost because of habitat destruction in the past 50 years. Loss of pine forests from pine-wilt disease is thought to be a major threat to this species. In contrast, V. ciliatum was found over a range of more than 300 km in western Japan. Habitats of both species were heavily fragmented. The genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of the three species were studied using nine simple-sequence repeat loci. V. sieboldii and V. ciliatum have a close genetic relationship, although their present growth ranges are widely separated. Despite its limited growth range and the limited number of remaining plants, the genetic diversity of V. sieboldii is similar to that of another endangered species, V. ciliatum, and that of the widely grown species, V. oldhami. Seven populations of the former two species were used to create population-based dendrograms. They were separated into three groups: three populations of V. sieboldii, two mountainous populations of V. ciliatum, and two coastal populations of V. ciliatum. The separation was supported by high bootstrap values. Isolation factors of the two population groups in V. ciliatum are discussed.  相似文献

Kongsfjord and Hornsund are fjords located on the west coast of the island of Spitsbergen that differ in terms of hydrographical conditions and food source availability for benthic organisms. We studied the nematode communities of these two glacial fjords with respect to their morphometric attributes (body length, width, length/width ratio) and biomass (total and individual) to evaluate whether their differences reflect differences in hydrographical and biogeochemical conditions. Sediments collected from Kongsfjord, which contained enhanced marine organic material than sediments from Hornsund, supported nematode communities exhibiting higher biomass and morphological diversity. The roles that the biochemical properties of sediments and food availability play in structuring biological communities were reflected in the wider spectrum of length/width ratio (L/W) and size spectra, with biomass dominance in the higher weight-classes observed in Kongsfjord. In this respect, the appearance of short and plump nematodes in the Kongsfjord nematode assemblage (12% of all nematodes), characterised by a L/W ratio of <12, was striking. This morphotype, which is almost absent in the Hornsund fjord (4%), is considered to be an indicator of well-oxygenated sediments with favourable food sources and may further confirm that the organic material in the Kongsfjord sediments is of higher quality. Furthermore, the homogeneity of sediment composition suggests that the morphological landscape of nematode communities are not structured by granulometry per se, as has been suggested in other studies, but rather by other environmental factors that are indirectly connected with particle size. The results of the present study provide evidence that the morphometric characteristics of nematodes are suitable for detecting differences in sediments, particularly with regard to organic matter availability.  相似文献

In arctic ecosystems parasitism seems less conspicuous than in more diverse tropical ecosystems. However, several host-parasite relations may be a burden in Arctic ecosystems and modify energy-flow patterns. Four different localities of the shallow shelf off Godhavn, West Greenland, were studied with regard to biomass, production and life cycles of selected bivalve and polychaete species. The following important parasite-bivalve associations were found: the athecate hydroidMonobrachium parasitum onMacoma calcarea; the digenetic trematodeGymnophallus somateriae inHiatella byssifera; an unidentified species of turbellarian inHiatella byssifera; and the nemerteanMalacobdella grossa inMya truncata. In the bivalvesMytilus edulis, Serripes groenlandicus andCardium ciliatum only few parasites were detected. Parasitism seems to follow the general trend observed in Arctic ecosystems which exhibit low species diversities and high numbers of individuals.  相似文献

The spatial and bathymetric distribution of the Greenland smooth cockle, Serripes groenlandicus, in Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan has been studied based on the data of three dredge surveys conducted in 2010–2012. The bathymetric range of the species habitat is 20–75 m; the densest aggregations are associated with sandy silt sediments in the central part of the bay at depths of 55–60 m. The surveyed area of S. groenlandicus aggregation is 2255 km2; the total area is believed to be 3430 km2. The estimated total species biomass averages 8731 t, ranging within 8538–9831 t.  相似文献

Selfing has evolved repeatedly in outcrossing taxa, and theory predicts that an increase in the level of self-fertilization should occur in concert with changes in reproductive allocation and the magnitude of inbreeding depression. Here we characterize the mating system of two sympatric congeners, Epilobium ciliatum and E. angustifolium, and compare the taxa for 1) reproductive allocation patterns and 2) the fitness consequences of self-fertilization. For E. ciliatum, autogamy rates were high, pollinator visitation was low, and electrophoresis revealed no genetic variation at 11 putative isozyme loci. For E. angustifolium, autogamy rates were low, pollinator visitation was relatively high, and electrophoresis generated an outcrossing rate estimate of t = 0.64 (SE = 0.08). The pollen/ovule ratio was ten times higher for E. angustifolium than for E. ciliatum, due to a decline in pollen production in the selfing species. The proportion of total flower biomass allocated to female function was significantly greater in E. ciliatum, while that allocated to male function and attractive structures was greater in E. angustifolium. We quantified the fitness consequences of selfing at three life stages: seed number, percent germination, and mature biomass. Relative performance (RP) measures indicated less inbreeding depression for E. ciliatum than for E. angustifolium at all stages; differences in RP between the species were significant for seed number and cumulative total, but not for germination or biomass. RP was correlated among life history stages for only one comparison, suggesting that the genetic basis of inbreeding depression differs among life history stages. Variation among maternal parents for RP was significant at almost all stages in both species, with the exception of seed number in E. ciliatum. The striking variation among maternal parents in E. angustifolium, ranging from strong inbreeding depression to strong outbreeding depression, may reflect both variation in the history of inbreeding and the long-distance migration of individuals from different populations.  相似文献

Life-history traits of kite skates Dipturus chilensis were examined from two regions (c. 2286 km apart) in the sheltered fjords and channels of southern Chile. A total of 482 and 403 specimens were collected from the southern fjords (c. 42–46° S) and the fjords of Chilean Patagonia (c. 51–54° S), from September 2003 to 2004, respectively. Vertebra marginal increment analysis indicated an annual deposition of growth rings which was completed during the winter months. For each region, von Bertalanffy growth parameters showed that females attained a larger asymptotic size, L, had a lower growth coefficient, K, and lived longer than males. Growth analysis indicated that D. chilensis from the Patagonian fjords had a longer life span (females: 22 v. 21 years; males 19 v. 17 years), attained a larger L (females: 150 v. 136 cm; males: 122 v. 118 cm total length, LT) and had a lower K value (females: 0·087 v. 0·104; males: 0·110 v. 0·116) than their counterparts in the southern fjords. Comparisons with previous studies indicated that D. chilensis from both southern and Patagonian sheltered fjords had larger L, and grew more slowly than their counterparts from central-southern Chile (L= 119–123 cm, K= 0·123–0·127), suggesting latitudinal variations in growth. Females attained sexual maturity later than males in both regions. For both sexes, lengths at 50% maturity (L50%) between regions were similar (females: c. 103 cm; males: c. 87 cm LT); however, D. chilensis from Patagonia appeared to mature 1 year earlier (females: 13 v. 14 years; males: 10 v. 11 years). Specimens from Patagonia had a lower ovarian fecundity than those from the southern fjords. An increase in the proportion of mature females and males during summer, suggests that the reproductive peak occurs in this season, and no regional differences were found. The size of the egg cases increased with maternal LT and these were longer in Patagonia. The information provided here represents the first evidence of regional variations in life-history traits for elasmobranchs in the south-eastern Pacific.  相似文献

The effect of repeated midday temperature stress on the photosynthetic performance and biomass production of seagrass was studied in a mesocosm setup with four common tropical species, including Thalassia hemprichii, Cymodocea serrulata, Enhalus acoroides, and Thalassodendron ciliatum. To mimic natural conditions during low tides, the plants were exposed to temperature spikes of different maximal temperatures, that is, ambient (29–33°C), 34, 36, 40, and 45°C, during three midday hours for seven consecutive days. At temperatures of up to 36°C, all species could maintain full photosynthetic rates (measured as the electron transport rate, ETR) throughout the experiment without displaying any obvious photosynthetic stress responses (measured as declining maximal quantum yield, Fv/Fm). All species except T. ciliatum could also withstand 40°C, and only at 45°C did all species display significantly lower photosynthetic rates and declining Fv/Fm. Biomass estimation, however, revealed a different pattern, where significant losses of both above‐ and belowground seagrass biomass occurred in all species at both 40 and 45°C (except for C. serrulata in the 40°C treatment). Biomass losses were clearly higher in the shoots than in the belowground root–rhizome complex. The findings indicate that, although tropical seagrasses presently can cope with high midday temperature stress, a few degrees increase in maximum daily temperature could cause significant losses in seagrass biomass and productivity.  相似文献

To assess whether long-term faunal changes have occurred on intertidal flats in the Danish Wadden Sea, results of faunal surveys in the Skallingen area during the 1930s, 1940s and 1980s were compared. Since the earlier studies, two species have disappeared (Scrobicularia plana andPetricola pholadiformis) and two have invaded the area (Tharyx killariensis andEnsis americanus). This is, however, not a local event as species changes have occurred on a larger scale (Wadden Sea region). Comparison of abundance data did not provide evidence of changes from the 1930s until the 1980s. Spatio-temporal fluctuations in two dominant species, the mudsnailHydrobia ulvae and the cockleCerastoderma edule chosen for closer examination, could be explained by natural processes. Growth data on cockles from the 1930s and the 1980s matched perfectly. During both periods, cockles showed a much lower growth rate than generally reported from the Wadden Sea, while at the same time they occurred at high densities (>2000 ind·m−2). Intraspecific competition among cockles is suspected as being a major cause of the low growth rates. Estimates of secondary production and P/B-ratios of cockles were also in general agreement during the 1930s and the 1980s when corrected for differences in the age structure of the cockle populations. With the possible exception ofMytilus edulis, which according to some observations has extended its range along the low-water line, the present comparison failed to demonstrate long-term faunal changes caused by increased eutrophication. This results is expected to be representative for intertidal flats not exposed to direct impacts from terrestrial run-offs and waste-water discharges.  相似文献

Abstract

The Grenland fjords, southern Norway, have been heavily contaminated by dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (dioxins) over decades through inputs from a magnesium smelter. Despite radically decreased inputs since 1990, there are still high levels of dioxins in both biotic and abiotic components of the fjords. The aim of the study was to establish whether biomarkers’ responses in three fish species, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.), sea-trout (anadromous brown trout, Salmo trutta L.) and flounder (Platichthys flesus L.), could be used to discern the effects in the most contaminated ecosystem, Frierfjord, from the effects in the adjacent, less-contaminated ecosystem, Eidangerfjord. Biomarker responses clearly indicated that the three fish species were affected by dioxin exposure. Phase I responses in cod and trout could be used to differentiate exposure in the two fjord ecosystems. Phase II responses (glutathione S-transferase) in cod and trout similarly indicated a higher dioxin exposure in Frierfjord compared with Eidangerfjord. Results for glutathione S-transferase and glutathione reductase indicated different exposure levels in the two fjords, but also showed seasonal variability, and the results highlighted the need for baseline data for these biomarkers.  相似文献

The naturalisation hypothesis has been gaining attention recently as a possible mechanism to explain variations in invasion success. It predicts that exotic genera with native representatives should be less successful because of an overlap in resource use and of the existence of common specialised enemies. In this study, we tested whether native congenerics have more negative impact on exotic species than heterogenerics by increasing the effects of soil pathogens. We sampled soil in populations of three exotic species (Epilobium ciliatum, Impatiens parviflora and Stenactis annua) at sites with and without respective congeneric species. This soil was used as an inoculum for cultivating the first plant cohort, which included exotics, as well as native congenerics and heterogenerics. The conditioned soil was subsequently used for cultivating the second cohort of plants (exotics only). We found no consistent impact of relatedness of conditioning species on exotic growth. Although soil conditioned by congeneric E. hirsutum had the largest reduction on the performance of E. ciliatum, the final biomass of S. annua was lowest when grown in soil conditioned by itself. There was no effect of stimulating species on the biomass of I. parviflora. In both experimental phases, performance of exotics was improved when cultivated with sterilised inoculua, indicating the dominance of soil generalist pathogens. However, the biomass of S. annua was increased most by congeneric-stimulated inoculum from congeneric sites, suggesting a possible role for specialised symbionts. Our results suggest that variations in invasion success of at least some exotics may be affected by species-specific interactions mediated by the soil biota.  相似文献

Prokaryotic epiphytes on leaves of three seagrass species, Thalassodendron ciliatum, Thalassia hemprichii, and Cymodocea rotundata, from two Kenyan coastal sites, Nyali (a high‐nutrient site) and Vipingo (a low‐nutrient site), were characterized genetically and morphologically. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and clone libraries of PCR‐amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments were used to study prokaryotes associated with these seagrasses. In general, the epiphytic coverage was greater in the high‐nutrient site, while the microbial diversity was linked to seagrass species rather than the study sites. Cytophaga–Flavobacteria–Bacteroides (CFB) were associated with T. ciliatum and T. hemprichii mainly in the nutrient‐poor site, while α‐, β‐, and γ‐proteobacteria were associated with all three species at the two study sites. Some bacteria phylotypes were closely related to sequences of microorganisms previously recovered from wastewaters or other contaminated sources, indicating the influx of land‐based wastes into these coastal lagoon ecosystems. The abundance of potential nitrogen (N2)‐fixing cyanobacteria on C.  rotundata, particularly in the low‐nutrient site, suggested that this association may have been acquired to meet N demands. Unicellular cyanobacteria were dominant and associated with C. rotundata and T. hemprichii (with those on T. hemprichii being closely related to cyanobacterial symbiotic species), while T. ciliatum was almost devoid of cyanobacterial associations at the same site (Nyali), which suggests specificity in the cyanobacteria–seagrass associations. The abundance of prokaryotic epiphytes was considered to be linked to water depth and tidal exposure.  相似文献

Widespread ocean acidification (OA) is modifying the chemistry of the global ocean, and the Arctic is recognized as the region where the changes will progress at the fastest rate. Moreover, Arctic species show lower capacity for cellular homeostasis and acid‐base regulation rendering them particularly vulnerable to OA. In the present study, we found physiological differences in OA response across geographically separated populations of the keystone Arctic copepod Calanus glacialis. In copepodites stage CIV, measured reaction norms of ingestion rate and metabolic rate showed severe reductions in ingestion and increased metabolic expenses in two populations from Svalbard (Kongsfjord and Billefjord) whereas no effects were observed in a population from the Disko Bay, West Greenland. At pHT 7.87, which has been predicted for the Svalbard west coast by year 2100, these changes resulted in reductions in scope for growth of 19% in the Kongsfjord and a staggering 50% in the Billefjord. Interestingly, these effects were not observed in stage CV copepodites from any of the three locations. It seems that CVs may be more tolerant to OA perhaps due to a general physiological reorganization to meet low intracellular pH during hibernation. Needless to say, the observed changes in the CIV stage will have serious implications for the C. glacialis population health status and growth around Svalbard. However, OA tolerant populations such as the one in the Disko Bay could help to alleviate severe effects in C. glacialis as a species.  相似文献

Critical baseline population knowledge is required to properly assess the status of marine mammal and bird populations in the Canadian Arctic and the effects of climate trends on them. To address this need for one significant Arctic region, a boat-based marine mammal and seabird transect survey was conducted in Cumberland Sound fjords during summer 2008. During 173 km effort (20 h), 959 birds were recorded representing at least nine species which were dominated by Common Eiders (Somateria mollissima borealis), Iceland or Glaucous Gulls (Larus glaucoides or Larus hyperboreus), and Black Guillemots (Cepphus grylle), in addition to less common birds including Red-throated and Common Loons (Gavia stellata and Gavia immer), Northern Fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis), and Great or Lesser Black-backed Gulls (Larus marinus or Larus fuscus). Of these, 480 birds were observed on the water in one event consisting of eiders and gulls which may have biased encounter rates. Of 101 marine mammal sightings, four species were represented: 73 harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus), 13 beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas), nine bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus), five ringed seals (Pusa hispida), and one unidentified pinniped. A pod of four killer whales (Orcinus orca) was observed off-effort in Pangnirtung Fjord during the survey period. This pilot study provided the first estimates of relative abundance for marine mammals and seabirds in the study area to aid in developing future surveys.  相似文献

Ocean acidification and warming will be most pronounced in the Arctic Ocean. Aragonite shell‐bearing pteropods in the Arctic are expected to be among the first species to suffer from ocean acidification. Carbonate undersaturation in the Arctic will first occur in winter and because this period is also characterized by low food availability, the overwintering stages of polar pteropods may develop into a bottleneck in their life cycle. The impacts of ocean acidification and warming on growth, shell degradation (dissolution), and mortality of two thecosome pteropods, the polar Limacina helicina and the boreal L. retroversa, were studied for the first time during the Arctic winter in the Kongsfjord (Svalbard). The abundance of L. helicina and L. retroversa varied from 23.5 to 120 ind m?2 and 12 to 38 ind m?2, and the mean shell size ranged from 920 to 981 μm and 810 to 823 μm, respectively. Seawater was aragonite‐undersaturated at the overwintering depths of pteropods on two out of ten days of our observations. A 7‐day experiment [temperature levels: 2 and 7 °C, pCO2 levels: 350, 650 (only for L. helicina) and 880 μatm] revealed a significant pCO2 effect on shell degradation in both species, and synergistic effects between temperature and pCO2 for L. helicina. A comparison of live and dead specimens kept under the same experimental conditions indicated that both species were capable of actively reducing the impacts of acidification on shell dissolution. A higher vulnerability to increasing pCO2 and temperature during the winter season is indicated compared with a similar study from fall 2009. Considering the species winter phenology and the seasonal changes in carbonate chemistry in Arctic waters, negative climate change effects on Arctic thecosomes are likely to show up first during winter, possibly well before ocean acidification effects become detectable during the summer season.  相似文献

Chaetomium is a fungus species that inhabits different cellulose substrates. Some species of this genus destroy books, textile, and wood. This genus is of particular interest due to its antagonistic and enzyme peculiarities. Studies on morphological and cultural features of Chaetomium species have both theoretical and practical output. Growth rates and development of C. globosum, C. funicola, C. elatum, and C. spirale were studied under different temperatures (17–20°C, 25°C, 27°C, 30°C, and 33–35°C) and carbon source media (glucose, saccharose, mannite, lactose, amylum, and cellulose). The optimal growth temperature was 25–27°C for all the studied species, while the temperature range of 33–35°C inhibited the colonies’ growth. Growth dynamics and colony shape and morphology, as well as development of overhead mycelium and ascocarps, varied greatly in different Chaetomium species in regard to the carbon source media. When comparing the destructive effect of four studied species and C. murorum on craft paper, the highest activity was registered for C. globosum, C. funicola, and C. elatum.  相似文献

The effect of water temperature on growth responses of three common seagrass fish species that co‐occur as juveniles in the estuaries in Sydney (34° S) but have differing latitudinal ranges was measured: Pelates sexlineatus (subtropical to warm temperate: 27–35° S), Centropogon australis (primarily subtropical to warm temperate: 24–37° S) and Acanthaluteres spilomelanurus (warm to cool temperate: below 32° S). Replicate individuals of each species were acclimated over a 7 day period in one of three temperature treatments (control: 22° C, low: 18° C and high: 26° C) and their somatic growth was assessed within treatments over 10 days. Growth of all three species was affected by water temperature, with the highest growth of both northern species (P. sexlineatus and C. australis) at 22 and 26° C, whereas growth of the southern ranging species (A. spilomelanurus) was reduced at temperatures higher than 18° C, suggesting that predicted increase in estuarine water temperatures through climate change may change relative performance of seagrass fish assemblages.  相似文献

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) have become an important model organism for developmental biology and human health studies. We recently demonstrated differential growth patterns between the zebrafish and a close relative the giant danio (Danio aequipinnatus), where the giant danio appears to exhibit indeterminate growth similar to most fish species important for commercial production, while zebrafish exhibit determinate growth more similar to mammalian growth. This study focused on evaluating muscle growth regulation differences in adult zebrafish and giant danio utilizing growth hormone treatment as a mode of growth manipulation. Growth hormone treatment resulted in increased overall growth in giant danio, but failed to increase growth in the zebrafish. Growth hormone treatment increased muscle IGF-I and GHrI gene expression in both species, but to a larger degree in the giant danio. In contrast, zebrafish exhibited a larger increase in IrA and IGF-IrB gene expression in muscle in response to GH treatment. In addition muscle myostatin levels were differentially regulated between the two species, with a down-regulation observed in rapidly growing, GH-treated giant danio and an up-regulation in zebrafish not actively growing in response to GH. This is the first report of differential expression of growth-regulating genes in closely related fish species exhibiting opposing growth paradigms. These results further support the role that the zebrafish and giant danio can play important model organisms for determinate and indeterminate growth.  相似文献

Tree-ring studies contribute worldwide to the understanding of climate and its relation to tree growth. Long tree-ring chronologies serve as climate proxies for the reconstruction of past, pre-instrument climate and its recent change. In tropical regions, the availability of exactly dated tree-ring chronologies is limited. The dendroclimatic potential of two dominant species from dry forests in northern Namibia was examined in the study presented in this paper. Both species (Burkea africana Hook and Pterocarpus angolensis DC) were sampled at two sites (ca. 900 km apart), and the response to several climatic variables, including ENSO indices, is studied. All specimens showed distinct growth rings and cross-dating between radii was successful for all trees. Species-specific mean curves were built for both sites. The mean curves of different species of the same site synchronised significantly, allowing the construction of a site-specific chronology. Synchronisation between sites was not possible, but spectral analysis of the chronologies implied that both show similar long-term (6.7 year) oscillation patterns. B. africana is more sensitive to rainfall variation than P. angolensis at both sites. Growth response to rainfall was positive, but a time-lag in the reaction occurred between the sites, corresponding to the time-lag of the beginning of the rainy season. Air temperature showed a negative correlation with stem increment at both sites. The response at the westernmost site to two ENSO indices indicates a tree growth decrease during El Niño years, which are generally dry in southern Africa.  相似文献
