The present study experimentally determined the short-term effect of different trampling intensities on the phytal habitat and associated meiofauna, and assessed the recovery of these communities on a coral reef. The experiment was conducted within the protected area on the reef of Porto de Galinhas Beach, northeastern Brazil. Within three areas, 30 × 30 cm2 plots were subjected to different experimental trampling intensities: 0 (control), 32 (low intensity) and 79 (high intensity) footsteps applied during 3 consecutive days. Samples were taken before trampling started and then 1 day and 1, 2 and 3 months after the end of trampling. Multivariate and univariate analyses were used to test for changes in the phytal substrate, the densities of the main meiofaunal major taxa, and the diversity, comparing the trampling intensities and the time periods. The immediate impact of trampling negatively affected the phytal substrate, causing large reductions in sediment content, total substrate weight, and algal turf height. Trampling also drastically decreased the density of the associated meiofauna and modified the community structure. The major meiofauna groups showed different patterns of recovery during the first and second months. However, 3 months after trampling ended, no impact was found for densities of total meiofauna and for most major taxa, and no differences were observed in the community structure among all trampling intensities. Finally, the results for trampling susceptibility and resilience allowed us to extend the discussion to management strategies for the use of reef areas for recreation.  相似文献

The unique marine ecosystems of coral reefs express varying levels of degradation as a result of increasing anthropogenic pressures. This is the main reason why more than 200 coral reef localities were proclaimed as natural reserves or marine parks under varying legislation, rules, and monitoring and management programs. Ironically, the conventional management plans increased accessibility to many reef localities and enhanced dramatically the impact of tourism on reef habitats. Recreational activities including SCUBA and skin diving, fishing, human trampling, sediment re-suspension, and other damage caused by “innocent” visitors are causing a rapid deterioration of many reefs. Their destruction requires years and decades for full recovery. I propose to rehabilitate such damaged habitats by the alternate strategy of “gardening coral reefs” with asexual and sexual recruits. Coral branches, colony fragments, and whole small colonies (asexual recruits) and laboratory or in situ settled planula-larvae (sexual recruits) are designed to be transplanted into denuded reefs for restoration. This approach is further improved when the sexual and asexual recruits are maricultured in situ within special protected areas, before being transplanted. The use of sexual recruits ensures an increase in genetic diversity. I discuss several methodologies and results already accumulated showing the applicability of this gardening strategy for rehabilitation of denuded coral reefs. This restoration strategy should be integrated with proper management similar to that of already established reforestation in terrestrial habitats. The best candidates for employing this strategy are the fast-growing coral species, usually branching forms and species that brood their planulae larvae.  相似文献

The health of the coral reefs of the Abrolhos Bank (Southwestern Atlantic) was characterized with a holistic approach using measurements of four ecosystem components: (i) inorganic and organic nutrient concentrations, [1] fish biomass, [1] macroalgal and coral cover and (iv) microbial community composition and abundance. The possible benefits of protection from fishing were particularly evaluated by comparing sites with varying levels of protection. Two reefs within the well-enforced no-take area of the National Marine Park of Abrolhos (Parcel dos Abrolhos and California) were compared with two unprotected coastal reefs (Sebasti?o Gomes and Pedra de Leste) and one legally protected but poorly enforced coastal reef (the "paper park" of Timbebas Reef). The fish biomass was lower and the fleshy macroalgal cover was higher in the unprotected reefs compared with the protected areas. The unprotected and protected reefs had similar seawater chemistry. Lower vibrio CFU counts were observed in the fully protected area of California Reef. Metagenome analysis showed that the unprotected reefs had a higher abundance of archaeal and viral sequences and more bacterial pathogens, while the protected reefs had a higher abundance of genes related to photosynthesis. Similar to other reef systems in the world, there was evidence that reductions in the biomass of herbivorous fishes and the consequent increase in macroalgal cover in the Abrolhos Bank may be affecting microbial diversity and abundance. Through the integration of different types of ecological data, the present study showed that protection from fishing may lead to greater reef health. The data presented herein suggest that protected coral reefs have higher microbial diversity, with the most degraded reef (Sebasti?o Gomes) showing a marked reduction in microbial species richness. It is concluded that ecological conditions in unprotected reefs may promote the growth and rapid evolution of opportunistic microbial pathogens.  相似文献

Phase shifts and the role of herbivory in the resilience of coral reefs   总被引:5,自引:4,他引:1
Cousin Island marine reserve (Seychelles) has been an effectively protected no-take marine protected area (MPA) since 1968 and was shown in 1994 to support a healthy herbivorous fish assemblage. In 1998 Cousin Island reefs suffered extensive coral mortality following a coral bleaching event, and a phase shift from coral to algal dominance ensued. By 2005 mean coral cover was <1%, structural complexity had fallen and there had been a substantial increase in macroalgal cover, up to 40% in some areas. No clear trends were apparent in the overall numerical abundance and biomass of herbivorous fishes between 1994 and 2005, although smaller individuals became relatively scarce, most likely due to the loss of reef structure. Analysis of the feeding habits of six abundant and representative herbivorous fish species around Cousin Island in 2006 demonstrated that epilithic algae were the preferred food resource of all species and that macroalgae were avoided. Given the current dominance of macroalgae and the apparent absence of macroalgal consumers, it is suggested that the increasing abundance of macroalgae is reducing the probability of the system reverting to a coral dominated state.  相似文献

Trampling responses of an Atlantic heathland dominated by furzes were experimentally determined. They concerned two levels of biological systems: the vegetal community level (community scale) and the species level (intracommunity scale). Two trampling experiments were conducted: the first one was carried out in summer and the second one in winter. Heathland was trampled over 4 months, at differents intensities: 10, 30 and 90 persons a day. Whether trampling was conducted in the summer or in the winter, immediate responses of heathland (community scale) were similar: resistance of this vegetal community did not vary with the trampling season. Responses also showed that there is no linear relationship between vegetation degradation and trampling intensity. Deferred vegetation responses were similar, but within the community heathland (intracommunity scale) responses of a taxonomic group can depend on the trampling season. For example, resilience of furzes trampled in winter was greater than resilience of furzes trampled in summer. All these results should be considered in order to establish management orientations of trampled heathlands.  相似文献

The effects of various disturbances on diversity and community structures of ground spiders in the Kenting National Park uplifted coral reef forest were investigated using pitfall traps. In each of the following five sampling sites, ten trap stations were established and were monitored once every month for a whole year: primary forest, primary forest with tourism activities, secondary forest, grassland with tourism activities and abandoned grassland. A total of 2237 adult spiders from 20 families and 110 species were collected, among which 86 (78.2%) were new or newly recorded species to Taiwan. Dominant species can be divided into two major groups according to temporal abundance variations: abundant in the dry season and abundant in the wet season. Habitat preference of 12 dominant species was assessed by comparing their relative abundance between sampling sites. Half of the species exhibited strong habitat preference and two species could only be found in habitats receiving no tourism disturbance. The Shannon–Weaver function, Simpson index and Evenness were not significantly different among the sites, suggesting that these sites had a similar community structure characterized by few dominant species and numerous rare species. However, the species composition differed considerably among the five sites. Results of a UPGMA analysis using pairwise Euclidean distance demonstrated that specimens from 50 trap stations can be divided into four major clusters: primary forest, secondary forest, grassland I and grassland II. Also, among 110 species obtained, 61 were distributed in one sampling site only, and each site had between 11 and 16 unique species. In addition to species composition, foraging guild composition also differed significantly among sampling sites. These results suggest that the diversity of ground spiders in the KTNP uplifted coral reef forest is quite heterogeneous, and any management activity should consider the uniqueness of each habitat type.  相似文献

The South China Sea in the Central Indo-Pacific is a large semi-enclosed marine region that supports an extraordinary diversity of coral reef organisms (including stony corals), which varies spatially across the region. While one-third of the world’s reef corals are known to face heightened extinction risk from global climate and local impacts, prospects for the coral fauna in the South China Sea region amidst these threats remain poorly understood. In this study, we analyse coral species richness, rarity, and phylogenetic diversity among 16 reef areas in the region to estimate changes in species and evolutionary diversity during projected anthropogenic extinctions. Our results show that richness, rarity, and phylogenetic diversity differ considerably among reef areas in the region, and that their outcomes following projected extinctions cannot be predicted by species diversity alone. Although relative rarity and threat levels are high in species-rich areas such as West Malaysia and the Philippines, areas with fewer species such as northern Vietnam and Paracel Islands stand to lose disproportionately large amounts of phylogenetic diversity. Our study quantifies various biodiversity components of each reef area to inform conservation planners and better direct sparse resources to areas where they are needed most. It also provides a critical biological foundation for targeting reefs that should be included in a regional network of marine protected areas in the South China Sea.  相似文献

There was a significant inshore to offshore pattern in grouper species composition and density on Florida Keys coral reefs. Red grouper Epinephelus morio and black grouper Mycteroperca bonaci were most abundant on inshore patch reefs. Graysby Cephalopholis cruentata was most abundant on offshore reef types. Density among sites ranged from 0 to 0·43, 0 to 0·26 and 0 to 1·23 100 m−2 for red grouper, black grouper, and graysby, respectively. Grouper density exhibited no consistency among sites within similar reef types. The densities of red and black grouper were correlated significantly with either physical or biotic habitat parameters. Graysby were observed in microhabitats with whose benthic features differed significantly from the surrounding habitat. This species was observed in high-relief areas with significantly less octocoral species and colony densities. Larger graysby were observed in areas of higher relief and less octocorals than smaller graysby. Habitat was one of several important factors influencing the distribution of groupers among coral reefs types in the Florida Keys.  相似文献

The structural complexity of coral reefs is important for their function as shelter and feeding habitats for coral reef fishes, but physical disturbance by human activities often reduce complexity of the reefs by selectively destroying fragile and more complex coral species. The damselfish Springer's demoiselle Chrysiptera springeri primarily utilize complex coral heads for shelter and are hence vulnerable to human disturbance. In order to evaluate the potential effect of habitat degradation on juvenile fish growth, coral reef cover, fish age at settling and otolith growth, juvenile Springer's demoiselle was investigated on a protected and non‐protected coral reef in Darvel Bay, Borneo. The protected reef had higher coverage of complex branching corals and exhibited a more complex 3‐dimensional structure than the non‐protected reef. Springer's demoiselle settled at the same age on non‐protected and protected reefs. The growth rates of the otoliths from Springer's demoiselle were similar during the pre‐settlement period on the two reefs (manova , P > 0.05), but from age 20 to 48 days (post‐settlement period) the otolith growth rate of juveniles on the non‐protected reef was reduced compared to those from the protected reef (manova , P = 0.017). However, the differences in the otolith size, and by inference, fish size, after 48 days were small. The small effect of habitat degradation on growth is likely related to the fact that the Springer's demoiselles collected on the non‐protected reef were associated with the few remaining complex coral heads. Increased foraging‐predation tradeoffs on the non‐protected reef may decrease food intake and growth of juvenile Springer's demoiselle, but the main effect of habitat degradation on their abundance is likely to be related to lack of suitable shelter, and consequently reduced carrying capacity, on disturbed reefs.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of reef fishes in relation to habitat structure were studied within Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary (BRMS) and on an adjacent reef, disturbed by destructive fishing techniques, in north-western Sri Lanka, by visually censusing 135 species groups using fifty metre belt-transects. Two types of continental shelf patch-reefs are found in the study area: coral reefs and sandstone reefs, which are divided into distinct habitats, four for the coral reef (shallow reef flat, shallow patch reef, deep reef flat and Porites domes) and two for the sandstone reef (structured sandstone-reef and flat sandstone-reef). Fish assemblages varied in structure between reef types and among habitats within reef types. Functional aspects of habitat structure and composition, such as available food and shelter, seemed to be important factors influencing distribution patterns. The strongest separation in the organisation of fish assemblages in BRMS was between reef types: 19% of all species were confined to the coral-reef patches while 22% were restricted to the sandstone reef patches and 59% were represented on both reef types. In terms of distribution among habitats, 21% of all species were restricted to one habitat while only 1.5% were present in all. The highest density of fish was in the coral reef habitats while highest species diversity was found in the most structurally complex habitat: the structured sandstone-reef. This habitat also had the highest proportion of species with restricted distribution. Planktivores were the most abundant trophic group in BRMS, and the species composition of the group varied among habitats. The comparison of the disturbed reef with BRMS suggested that habitat alteration caused by destructive fishing methods has strongly influenced the fish community. Within the fished area the structure of the fish assemblages was more heterogeneous, fish abundance was lower by an order of magnitude and species numbers were lower than in BRMS.  相似文献

In response to concerns about widespread degradation of coral reefs at Barbados, West Indies, over the past two decades, maps and planimetric areas of 20 fringing coral reefs were estimated from enlargements of aerial photographs of the island, using geographic information system analysis. There were statistically significant reductions in reef areas over a 40-year period from 1950 to 1991. Areal losses exceeding measurement and boundary interpretation errors of 10% were detected on eight of the 20 reefs. Ground validation carried out by divers on six of the reefs confirmed physical losses of reef structures and accumulation of rubble and sand substrata at sites where substantial planimetric area loss was detected on aerial photographs. Structural losses occurred along the "spur and groove" system of the reef-seaward edge, within deep channels or breaches in the reef front, and along the flanks or ends of reefs. The location and nature of the observed losses suggest that storm damage and seasonal alterations in beach morphology are the two most important factors contributing to geomorphological structural loss of the reefs.  相似文献

While diversity of symbiodiniacean dinoflagellates has been a focus of coral reef ecological research, information on the diversity of planktonic dinoflagellates in reef ecosystems remains limited. We used dinoflagellate-targeted PCR to investigate dinoflagellate diversity for a coral reef ecosystem. In the summer of 2007, plankton samples were collected from a lagoon, atoll, and open sea area of Zhubi Reef in the Nansha Islands, South China Sea. Sequencing of dinoflagellate-specific SSU rDNA clone libraries from samples in each of these habitats revealed high diversity and numerous novel dinoflagellate lineages. Gymnodiniales were most abundantly represented in all three water areas. Lagoon assemblages were co-dominated by Syndiniales and Gonyaulacales, the atoll by Gonyaulacales and Peridiniales, and the open sea by Syndiniales and Prorocentrales taxa. Species in the Syndiniales (group II) genus Amoebophrya were represented by eight new sequences and 13 previously described clades and were dominated by species reported to infect Gymnodiniales, Gonyaulacales, Peridiniales, and Prorocentrales taxa. And Amoebophrya were particularly abundant and diverse in the lagoon. Our results suggest that Amoebophrya probably play an important role in regulating dynamics of dinoflagellate assemblages in the Zhubi Reef coral ecosystem. In contrast, the few symbiodiniacean taxa detected occurred only in the open sea, suggesting planktonic aposymbiotic Symbiodiniaceae rarely occur in the reef ecosystem. We demonstrate the usefulness of a dinoflagellate-specific molecular technique for profiling dinoflagellate communities, and uncover diversity and the potential importance of parasitic lineages in a coral reef ecosystem.

The coral reefs at the northernmost tip of Sabah, Borneo will be established under a marine protected area: the Tun Mustapha Park (TMP) by the end of 2015. This area is a passage where the Sulu Sea meets the South China Sea and it is situated at the border of the area of maximum marine biodiversity, the Coral Triangle. The TMP includes fringing and patch reefs established on a relatively shallow sea floor. Surveys were carried out to examine features of the coral reefs in terms of scleractinian species richness, and benthic reef assemblages following the Reef Check substrate categories, with emphasis on hard coral cover. Variation in scleractinian diversity was based on the species composition of coral families Fungiidae (n = 39), Agariciidae (n = 30) and Euphylliidae (n = 15). The number of coral species was highest at reefs with a larger depth gradient i.e. at the periphery of the study area and in the deep South Banggi Channel. Average live hard coral cover across the sites was 49%. Only 7% of the examined reefs had > 75% hard coral cover, while the majority of the reef sites were rated fair (51%) and good (38%). Sites with low coral cover and high rubble fragments are evidence of blast fishing, although the observed damage appeared old. Depth was a dominant factor in influencing the coral species composition and benthic reef communities in the TMP. Besides filling in the information gaps regarding species richness and benthic cover for reef areas that were previously without any data, the results of this study together with information that is already available on the coral reefs of TMP will be used to make informed decisions on zoning plans for conservation priorities in the proposed park.  相似文献

Perceived growth in the adventure recreation sport of canyoning in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area (Australia) has raised concerns with park management that such activity is resulting in unsustainable visitor impacts to canyon ecosystems. Three levels of trampling intensity were applied within an upland section of a canyon stream to assess the impact of trampling on benthic macroinvertebrate communities. After an initial detrimental effect from trampling, there was a rapid recovery of the macroinvertebrate community. Recovery occurred within one day of trampling ceasing, and overall community composition was similar among treatments after 15 days. However, by day 15 the untrampled sites showed a substantial decrease in animal abundance. This indicated that adjacent habitat contributed greatly to the recolonisation of animals into trampled areas.  相似文献

The present study was conducted on Tamandaré reefs, northeast Brazil and aimed to analyse the importance of different factors (e.g. tourism activity, fishing activity, coral abundance and algal abundance) on reef fish abundance and species richness. Two distinct reef areas (A ver o mar and Caieiras) with different levels of influence were studied. A total of 8239 reef fish individuals were registered, including 59 species. Site 1 (A ver o mar) presented higher reef fish abundance and richness, with dominance of roving herbivores (29.9 %) and mobile invertebrate feeders (28.7 %). In contrast, at Site 2 (Caieiras) territorial herbivores (40.9 %) predominated, followed by mobile invertebrate feeders (24.6 %). Concerning the benthic community, at Site 1 macroalgae were recorded as the main category (49.3 %); however, Site 2 was dominated by calcareous algae (36.0 %). The most important variable explaining more than 90 % of variance on reef fish abundance and species richness was macroalgae abundance, followed by fishing activity. Phase shifts on coral reefs are evident, resulting in the replacement of coral by macroalgae and greatly influencing reef fish communities. In this context, it is important to understand the burden of the factors that affect reef fish communities and, therefore, influence the extinction vulnerability of coral reef fishes.  相似文献

Most of the knowledge of the reef geomorphology and benthic communities of Kuna Yala coral reefs (Caribbean Panama) comes from the western side of the archipelago, a few tens of kilometers around Punta San Blas (Porvenir). To bridge the gap between Porvenir and the Colombia–Panama border, we investigated with Landsat images the extent and geomorphological diversity of the entire Kuna Yala to provide geomorphologic maps of the archipelago in 12 classes. In addition to remote sensing data, in situ survey conducted in May–June 2001 provided a Kuna Yala-wide first synoptic vision of reef status, in terms of benthic diversity (number of species of coral, octocorals, and sponges) and reef health (coral versus algal cover). For a total reef system estimated to cover 638 km2 along 480 km of coastline, 195 km2 include coral dominated areas and only 35 km2 can be considered covered by corals. A total of 69 scleractinian coral, 38 octocoral, and 82 sponge species were recorded on the outer slopes of reef formations, with a slightly higher diversity in the area presenting the most abundant and diverse reef formations (western Kuna Yala). Attempts to relate benthic diversity and geomorphological diversity provided only weak relationships regardless of the taxa, and suggest that habitat heterogeneity within geomorphological areas explain better the patterns of coral diversity. This study confirms the potential of combined remote sensing and in situ surveys for regional scale assessment, and we suggest that similar approaches should be generalized for reef mapping and assessment for other reef sites.  相似文献

The severely degraded condition of many coral reefs worldwide calls for active interventions to rehabilitate their physical and biological structure and function, in addition to effective management of fisheries and no‐take reserves. Rehabilitation efforts to stabilize reef substratum sufficiently to support coral growth have been limited in size. We documented a large coral reef rehabilitation in Indonesia aiming to restore ecosystem functions by increasing live coral cover on a reef severely damaged by blast fishing and coral mining. The project deployed small, modular, open structures to stabilize rubble and to support transplanted coral fragments. Between 2013 to 2015, approximately 11,000 structures covering 7,000 m2 were deployed over 2 ha of a reef at a cost of US$174,000. Live coral cover on the structures increased from less than 10% initially to greater than 60% depending on depth, deployment date and location, and disturbances. The mean live coral cover in the rehabilitation area in October 2017 was higher than reported for reefs in many other areas in the Coral Triangle, including marine protected areas, but lower than in the no‐take reference reef. At least 42 coral species were observed growing on the structures. Surprisingly, during the massive coral bleaching in other regions during the 2014–2016 El Niño–Southern Oscillation event, bleaching in the rehabilitation area was less than 5% cover despite warm water (≥30°C). This project demonstrates that coral rehabilitation is achievable over large scales where coral reefs have been severely damaged and are under continuous anthropogenic disturbances in warming waters.  相似文献

Abstract. Effects of interspecific interactions on the organization of two trampled communities, Eragrostio ferrugineae - Plantaginetum asiaticae (EP) and Eleusino indicae - Digitarietum violascentis (ED), were examined by 4-yr field experiments. We compared changes in the relative abundance of the main component species of the communities in monoculture and mixed culture along a trampling gradient. At no trampling in mixed culture, Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior and Erigeron annuus (roadside herbs, RH) predominated and excluded the trampled community species. Severe trampling markedly reduced the predominance of these roadside herbs, promoted Eragrostis ferruginea (a perennial grass of EP), but suppressed Eleusine indica (an annual grass of ED). These results suggest that the differentiation of trampled and roadside herb communities under heavy trampling are caused by asymmetric competition between their main species. Several species pairs showed a constant rank order of relative cover at high trampling levels. Pennisetum alopecuroides (a perennial grass of both RH and EP) and Eragrostis coexisted, indicating symmetric competition. Eragrostis and Plantago asiatica (a perennial herb of EP) or Poa annua (a winter-annual grass of both EP and ED) coexisted through separation in phenology. Eragrostis promoted the survival of Plantago by moderating unpredictable drought (commensalistic positive interaction). This suggests that community composition is maintained by several interspecific interactions.  相似文献
