Summary Wyeomyia smithii Coq. (Diptera: Culicidae) overwinters as a larva in a state of diapause which is initiated, maintained, and terminated by photoperiod. Both in the dawn and in the dusk, diapausing larvae are photoperiodically most sensitive to blue light (390–450 nm) with a shoulder in response in the bluegreen and green (480–540 nm) region of the spectrum. The saturation curves for response to blue light in the dusk has a steeper slope than for response to blue-green and green light in the dusk, suggesting two distinct pigments or pigment complexes underly photoperiodic response in W. smithii. The photic environment of W. smithii during twilight is rich in yellow-green light but sufficient light is available at 390–540 nm to trigger photoperiodic response early during morning civil twilight and to sustain response until late in evening civil twilight. Comparison of action spectra with spectra of available light indicates that the zenith angles of the sun which would result in 50% response are 95°48 and 94°52 in the dawn and dusk, respectively. Using these zenith angles to approximate daylength in nature provides a resonable prediction of development in the field. The flux density of photons necessary to elicit 50% development a 454 nm is about 9×107 photons/cm2 s in the dawn and 3×108 photons/cm2 s in the dusk. This high degree of sensitivity enables W. smithii to cue to the rapidly changing light intensity which occurs around the nautical-civil twilight transition. At the same time, the chromophore is not likely to be stimulated by the light of the full moon.  相似文献

Seasonal and diel patterns of singing activity of Savis warblers (Locustella luscinioides) were studied in two areas of Central Europe 300 km apart, over a period of 18 years. We assess about 4,600 records of individuals singing. Males were found to exhibit similar singing activity in both study sites. They started to sing after arrival at the beginning of April and peaked from the end of April to the beginning of May. Thereafter, their singing activity was lower but more stable for a relatively long period from mid-May to mid-July. At the end of July, males sang only sporadically and singing activity ceased at the beginning of August. At the beginning and towards the end of the song-period males sang sporadically whereas in the period of the highest singing activity they sang over the entire 24-h period. During the whole song-period, there was a significant difference in singing activity between daylight and the dark (67.2 and 32.8%, respectively). However, the period of daylight was longer. Average singing activity showed similar levels in daylight and the dark with mean numbers of 5.9 and 6.6 males per hour, respectively. Major changes in singing activity were related to the twilight periods. There were distinctive dawn and dusk choruses. In the morning, Savis warblers exhibited similar levels of singing activity over 3 h of the dark before twilight, singing reached its highest level at twilight and 1 h after twilight. During the evening, singing activity reached its highest-level 1 h before twilight, while during twilight it was decreasing, with a considerable decline 1 h after nightfall.  相似文献

The study aimed to determine the influence of repeated natural dawn and dusk twilight pulses in entraining the circadian flight activity rhythm of the microchiropteran bat, Hipposideros speoris, free-running in constant darkness in a natural cave. The bats were exposed to repeated dawn or dusk twilight pulses at eight circadian phases. All bats exposed to dawn twilight pulses were entrained by advancing transients, and the stable entrainment was reached when the onset of activity occurred about 12 h before the lights-on of the pulses, irrespective of the initial phase at which the bats were exposed to twilight. All bats exposed to dusk twilight pulses, however, were entrained by delaying transients, and the stable entrainment was reached when the onset of activity occurred about 1.6 h after the lights-on of the pulses. The entrainment caused by dawn and dusk twilight pulses is discussed in the context of the postulated two photoreceptors: the short wavelength sensitive (S) photoreceptors mediating entrainment via dusk twilight, and the medium wavelength sensitive (M) photoreceptors mediating entrainment via dawn twilight.  相似文献

Summary In the spider Dinopis, retinae of the posterior median eyes synthesise new photoreceptor membrane in bulk at dusk and destroy it at dawn (Blest, 1978). During the dawn period, there is a rapid, anticipatory differentiation of unusual organelles from the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) in the intermediate segments of the receptors. This system is classified as GERL. Its products appear to play a role in the autolysis of photoreceptor membrane. Consistent topographical relationship to Golgi bodies has not been determined. Circumscribed regions of RER whorls first reorganise to yield fenestrated profiles; these differentiate further to a number of structures by condensation and loss of ribosomes. Smooth tubular profiles are termed rigid tubules to indicate their probable homology with the rigid lamellae of vertebrate secretory cells. More complex smooth multilocular bodies are also produced. Evidence is discussed which implies that both rigid tubules and multilocular bodies give rise to condensing vacuoles. These, in turn, pinch off coated vesicles assembled as Nebenkerne. Some rigid tubules are transported to the interrhabdomeral cytoplasm of the receptive segments. At late stages of differentiation, rigid tubules, multilocular bodies and Nebenkerne give strong, positive responses to zinc iodide-osmium tetroxide (ZIO) treatment; early stages and both cis and trans Golgi components do not. GERL differentiation is independent of immediate illumination of the retina at dawn. It is suggested to mediate the lysis of membrane degradation products by the production of hydrolases. We thank Professor D.T. Observational data collected in the field and in enclosures show that diurnal, burrow-dwelling European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) never were above ground during twilight at dawn or at dusk. The animals emerged on average 4.02 h (SD = 0.45) after civil twilight at dawn and retreated in their burrows on average 2.87 h (SD = 0.47) before civil twilight at dusk. Daily patterns of light perceived by these burrowing mammals were measured with light-sensitive radio collar transmitters in an enclosure (the Netherlands) and in the field (Hungary). The observational data are corroborated by the telemetry data, which show clear daily patterns of timing of light perception including light perceived from the burrow entrances. The first light was observed by the animals on average 3.54 h (enclosure, SD = 0.45) and 3.60 h (field, SD = 0.31) after civil twilight at dawn, whereas the final observed light was on average 3.04 h (enclosure, SD = 0.64) and 2.02 h (field, SD = 0.72) before civil twilight at dusk. Thus, the animals do not perceive the rapid natural light-dark (LD) transitions that occur at civil twilight. Instead, they generate their own pattern of exposure to light within the natural LD cycle. The classical phase response model for entrainment by light or dark pulses cannot explain how the circadian system of this species remains entrained to the external, natural LD cycle while the major LD transitions are created by its own behavior.  相似文献

Among the many unique flight behaviours of Common Swifts Apus apus, the most puzzling may be their ascents to high altitudes during both dusk and dawn. Twilight ascents have been hypothesized to be functionally related to information acquisition, including integration of celestial orientation cues, high‐altitude visual landmarks and sampling of weather conditions. However, their exact purpose remains unknown. We tracked Common Swifts with tracking radar at their breeding grounds in southern Sweden, and present evidence that during the dusk ascent and dawn descent they often occur in flocks, whereas during the dusk descent and dawn ascent phase they do not. This flocking behaviour suggests that swifts may benefit from conspecific interactions during twilight ascents and descents, possibly through more robust cue acquisition and information exchange in groups, or extending social behaviour also seen in screaming parties before dusk.  相似文献

Although bats are nocturnal, many species emerge from roosts to forage during twilight, despite a presumed high risk of predation at this time. Here, we describe twilight foraging by a maternity colony of Schneider's leafnosed bat (Hipposideros speoris) in the dry zone of Sri Lanka and determine the dietary benefits of such behavior. Bats usually began foraging during dusk, sometimes before sunset, and also foraged during twilight in the morning. Mean use of available twilight by four radio‐tagged bats was 75 percent. Twilight foraging made up, on average, 47 percent of the total foraging time of these bats (range = 25–96%), although twilight consisted of only 12 percent of the available time between sunset and sunrise the next morning. Eight species of potential predators (7 birds and 1 mammal) were observed within a 1 km radius of the colony, of which 5 species are predicted to regularly capture bats. Bats took a wide diversity of prey (11 insect orders, including at least 27 families, and spiders) that ranged in wing length from 2.0 to 54.0 mm. Major orders in the diet were Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, and Diptera. Prey of secondary importance included Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Isoptera, and Neuroptera. Bats captured large numbers of insects that were only available or had marked peaks in abundance during twilight. These groups included small, swarming insects (especially flies) that have peaks in flight activity at dusk and dawn, large diurnal species (especially dragonflies) that have crepuscular activity, and winged termites that emerge in swarms at dusk. Access to these insects was a clear benefit of twilight foraging.  相似文献

Males of many songbird species have peaks of singing activity at dawn and dusk. Singing during those twilight periods can function in territory proclamation, and males are suggested to adjust song output to the level of intruder pressure. We used song playback during the breeding season to simulate intrusions into territories of male Winter Wrens (Troglodytes troglodytes) shortly after dawn. We then compared male singing behaviour during the dawn and dusk chorus before and 1 day after the simulated intrusion. One day after the playback, male Wrens increased their song output before sunrise, which confirms our results from a previous study on dawn singing in autumn territories. At dusk, on the evening following the playback, males slightly increased song output after sunset, but singing activity at dusk was generally very low. We found no significant changes of song output after sunrise, before sunset, and between 2 days of control without playback. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that dawn and dusk singing is important for territory defence in spring. Unlike in autumn, however, increased singing in spring at dawn and dusk could also serve to defend other resources such as fertile mates or to strengthen the pair bond after a territorial challenge. In comparison with the results on autumnal singing, male Wrens started singing earlier at dawn during the breeding season, and they generally sang more songs at dawn and immediately after playback. The increase in absolute numbers of songs sung in the morning after playback seemed greater in spring than in autumn; however, the proportional increase relative to overall song output was similar in both seasons.  相似文献

Synopsis Social and reproductive behavior of three paternal mouthbrooding cardinalfishes (Apogonidae) were investigated in the shallow marine waters of Shirahama, Japan. The solitary species Apogon doederleini and A. niger bred in transient pairs, in which a male and female associated for only a few hours of each afternoon on less than 5 successive days. The prespawning behavior was the same as the courtship display on days prior to spawning. After spawning, egg-incubating males were usually left alone. The gregarious species Apogon notatus formed territorial lasting pairs, which resided at given sites from dawn to dusk on each day during a period of a month or more. After spawning, the egg-incubating male either continued to stay with his mate in the territory, or left it to enter into an aggregation. In the latter case, the female continued to reside in the territory, pairing with a new male whom she brought from an aggregation. It is suggested that in paternal apogonids the prolonged pair bond and territoriality should have developed only in gregarious species as secondary adaptation for reproductive success: to avoid conspecific interference during spawning.  相似文献

This paper describes and analyzes a type of Toraja (South Sulawesi, Indonesia) suicide in which a person kills him or herself after having been slighted or offended, usually by a close family member. Comparing and contrasting such suicides to similar types found elsewhere in Austronesia-speaking Oceania, the paper argues that self-inflicted deaths of this nature are not so much anomic, as suggested by some analysts, as indignant; they are committed by persons who feel that they have been severely mistreated or abused according to traditional notions of reciprocity, mutual aid, and the dangers of frustrated desire. The paper concludes by suggesting that Durkheim may have underestimated the frequency and importance of indignant suicide in traditional societies and that, conversely, contemporary analysts may be underestimating the importance of traditional norms and values in accounting for the high rates of suicide found in many parts of the Pacific today.  相似文献

The fecundity of the South India strain of Callosobruchus maculatus (Fab.) (Bruchidae: Coleoptera) is 73 eggs for females developing in 31 days and increases to 94 eggs for females emerging after 41 days. Fed females lay 45–55 more eggs which is the egg-equivalent of the reserves unfed females had to sacrifice for activity. Competition as a larva did not reduce a female's fecundity. Oviposition is inhibited when females are given 25 or fewer beans for oviposition and it is reversed if females find fresh beans. Oviposition is generally released by beans carrying a below average number of eggs, thus, the eggs are almost uniformly distributed over the beans. Eggs are preferentially placed on the largest egg-free beans as expected if oviposition is released when a beetle goes from a smaller to a larger bean. The cues resulating host preferences, cowpea > mung pigeonpea chickpea, are secondary to the cues producing hyperdispersion and the selection of larger beans. We present a model for the oviposition behavior that accounts for the observed responses to species, size, and egg load of oviposition sites.

Synopsis Retinomotor movements of three size classes of juvenile French grunts, Haemulon flavolineatum, are characterized during the periods of their daily evening and dawn migration. Differences in the extension and withdrawal of the cones correlate with the earlier departure and later return to the daytime schooling sites of the smallest juveniles as compared to the larger juveniles. For each size class changes in the dimensions and retinal distribution of the cone cells and optical properties of the eye are used to estimate differences in photosensitivity under conditions of equal radiant intensities. For a target subtending any given angle, calculation indicates that the largest juveniles should be capable of discrimination at one-thousandth the light intensity of the smallest juveniles. The differences in potential photosensitivity correlate with the different intensities at which they migrate. The likely trigger to initiate their daily migrations probably involves circadian factors at dawn and extension of the single cones from the focal region of the retina prior to the evening migration. This paper is dedicated to the memory of John Lythgoe, whose insight served as inspiration for this study.  相似文献

Embryogenic avocado cultures were exposed to ionizing irradiation in order to determine its effect on proliferation and subsequent somatic embryo development. The approximate PD50 as determined by linear regression is 35 Gy 2 weeks after irradiation for Fuerte 2.11.1 and 4 weeks after irradiation for T362 2.11.1. Irradiation of embryogenic cultures did not significantly affect the number of early stage Fuerte 2.11.1 somatic embryos that developed directly from irradiated cultures; however, 10–50 Gy inhibited somatic embryo development. Irradiation of T362 2.11.1 embryogenic cultures at 25–50 Gy inhibited the number of intermediate and mature stages of somatic embryos that developed directly from irradiated cultures, and 50 Gy inhibited somatic embryo maturation. Inhibition of somatic embryo development could be partially offset by proliferation of irradiated embryogenic cultures as suspensions. Irradiation up to 10 Gy significantly increased the number of mature Fuerte 2.11.1 somatic embryos that developed from suspension cultures. Irradiation with doses up to 25 Gy stimulated development of heart stage T362 2.11.1 somatic embryos; however, mature somatic embryo development was suppressed at dosages of 10 Gy and greater.  相似文献

Phase-response curves (PRCs) for the circadian rhythm of flight activity of the microchiropteran bat (Hipposideros speoris) were determined in a cave, employing discrete natural dawn and dusk twilight pulses. These PRCs are reported for the first time for any circadian system and they are unlike other PRCs constructed for nocturnal mammals. Dawn and dusk twilight pulses evoked advance and delay phase shifts, respectively. Advance phase shifts were followed by 3 to 4 advancing transients and a subsequent shortening of free-running period (τ); whereas, the delay phase shifts were instantaneous without any transients but with a subsequent lengthening of τ.  相似文献

The effects of the tripeptide analogues of neurotensin, GZR123 and GZR125, on thermoregulation was studied in rats that were kept at different ambient temperatures ( c): in the cold ( c = 4–6°C), thermoneutral ( c = 27–28°C), and hot ( c = 31–32°C) environment, as well as at room temperature ( c = 20–21°C). In the cold environment, the injection of GZR123 disturbed the vegetative mechanisms of heat emission, leading to peripheral vasoconstriction and possibly changing heat production. Similar to neurotensin, GZR125 disturbed the development of compensatory vasoconstriction in the cold environment and at room temperature, which resulted in a decrease in body temperature. At high temperature, this peptide induced vasodilation.  相似文献

So little is known about about what goes on above our heads in rain forests and what lives there that the rain forest canopy has been called the last biological frontier. Until very recently, researchers had very limited access to the canopy, even in temperate forests and, not surprisingly, we are only just beginning to discover this part of the world. A new breed of scientists, canopy biologists, has evolved and have accelerated the rate of discovery. The implications for management of forests of this new voyage of discovery are enormous. At present conservationists, forest managers, environmental policy makers, and other research users have not even started to consider how to integrate the resulting new information for future planning and sustainable management and use of forests. The Earth Summit in 1992 drew attention to several of the principal biological dilemmas of the 20th century: biodiversity and forest loss, land conversion, climate change and ozone depletion. Understanding the importance of forest canopies for these issues is essential and researchers need to consider how better to coordinate their activities and deliver their results if they are to influence decision making at all levels. One new initiative shows some promise in this regard. Recently the United Nations Environment Program has supported the International Canopy Crane Network. This network of crane sites around the world will focus on providing an improved scientific basis for the importance of the forest canopy with respect to the Conventions on Biological Diversity, Climate Change and Ozone Depletion.  相似文献

Three sialosylated and three neutral glycosphingolipids sharing a common iso-neolacto core were isolated from porcine kidney cortex. They were purified by preparative HPTLC, and were characterized by partial exoglycosidase hydrolysis followed by thin layer chromatography and immunostaining with anti-Gal13Gal, anti-type 2 lactosamine and anti-Lewisx antibodies, methylation analysis, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Among neutral glycolipids, one was a known structure, VI3VI3(Gal)2-iso-nLc8Cer, and two were novel structures differing by the number of Gal3Lewisx determinants: VI3VI3(Gal)2V3Fuc-iso-nLc8, and VI3VI3(Gal)2 V3V3(Fuc)2-iso-nLc8. The single Gal3Lewis x determinant was found on the 6-linked antenna. Among sialosylated glycolipids, two had been previously found in other species and tissues, VI3VI3(NeuAc)2-iso-nLc8, and VI3NeuAcVI3Gal-iso-nLc8. A novel structure was discovered presenting a Gal3Lewisx determinant on the 6-linked antenna and a N-acetylneuraminic acid on the 3-linked antenna, VI3NeuAcVI3GalV3Fuc-iso-nLc8. These results indicate that, in vivo, the porcine kidney 3fucosyltransferase synthesizes the Gal3Lewisx determinant, acting on the 6-linked before the 3-linked Gal3neolactosamine, and appears unable to synthesize the sialosylated Lewisx determinant on neolactoseries glycolipids.  相似文献

In the present study, the expression of glycoconjugates in the guinea pig seminal vesicle was localized and partially characterized by lectin histochemistry using a battery of 30 different lectins specific for different carbohydrate residues. The results indicate that the glandular epithelium of the guinea pig seminal vesicle exhibits complex glycoconjugates rich in Man, -GlcNAc, -Gal, /-GalNAc, Fuc and complex NeuAc(2,6)Gal/GalNAc residues, as shown by its positive reactions to most lectins used. The Golgi region of the luminal secretory epithelial cells expresses a complex glycoconjugate pattern, as shown by its strong reactions to Man-(PSA, GNA), -GlcNAc-(S-WGA, PWA, DSA, UDA), -Gal- (RCA-I and -II), /-GalNAc-(SBA, Jac, VVA, BPA) and complex NeuAc-(SNA) specific lectins, indicating that the secretory epithelial cells are active in glycosylation and secretion process. It was also shown in the present study that the basal and luminal epithelial cells are different in their glycoconjugates. The basal epithelial cells are rich in NeuAc(2,3)Gal residues as they are stained specifically by MAA. The fibroblasts in the epithelial-smooth muscle interface and the smooth muscle cells close to the glandular epithelium are shown to express more glycoconjugates as they are stained intensely by GS-I-B4, GS-II and SBA. However, their role in the epithelial-stromal interaction in the seminal vesicle remains to be elucidated. In summary, the present study reports for the first time on the lectin binding patterns of the guinea pig seminal vesicle, and the results show that the seminal vesicle epithelium elaborates and secretes glycoconjugates in a complex pattern. Some of the lectins might be useful as histochemical markers for the secretory activity and specific structural components in the guinea pig seminal vesicle. © 1998 Chapman & Hall  相似文献
