The ability to cope with NH4+-N was studied in the littoral helophytes Phragmites australis and Glyceria maxima, species commonly occupying fertile habitats rich in NH4+ and often used in artificial wetlands. In the present study, Glyceria growth rate was reduced by 16% at 179 μM NH4+-N, and the biomass production was reduced by 47% at 3700 μM NH4+-N compared to NO3-N. Similar responses were not found in Phragmites. The amounts (mg g−1 dry wt) of starch and total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC) in rhizomes were significantly lower in NH4+ (8.9; 12.2 starch; 20.1; 41.9 TNC) compared to NO3 treated plants (28.0; 15.6 starch; 58.5; 56.3 TNC) in Phragmites and Glyceria, respectively. In addition, Glyceria showed lower amounts (mg g−1 dry wt) of soluble sugars, TNC, K+, and Mg2+ in roots under NH4+ (5.6; 14.3; 20.6; 1.9) compared to NO3 nutrition (11.6; 19.9; 37.9; 2.9, for soluble sugars, TNC, K+, and Mg2+, respectively), while root internal levels of NH4+ and Ca2+ (0.29; 4.6 mg g−1 dry wt, mean of both treatments) were only slightly affected. In Phragmites, no changes in soluble sugars, TNC, Ca2+, K+, and Mg2+ contents of roots (7.3; 14.9; 5.1; 17.3; 2.6 mg g−1 dry wt, means of both treatments) were found in response to treatments. The results, therefore, indicate a more pronounced tolerance towards high NH4+ supply in Phragmites compared to Glyceria, although the former may be susceptible to starch exhaustion in NH4+-N nutrition. In contrast, Glyceria's ability to colonize fertile habitats rich in NH4+ is probably related to the avoidance strategy due to shallow rooting or to the previously described ability to cope with high NH4+ levels when P availability is high and NO3 is also provided.  相似文献

The author studied the effect of different nickel concentrations (0, 0.4, 40 and 80 μM Ni) on the nitrate reductase (NR) activity of New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia expansa Murr.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Justyna) plants supplied with different nitrogen forms (NO3 –N, NH4 +–N, NH4NO3). A low concentration of Ni (0.4 μM) did not cause statistically significant changes of the nitrate reductase activity in lettuce plants supplied with nitrate nitrogen (NO3 –N) or mixed (NH4NO3) nitrogen form, but in New Zealand spinach leaves the enzyme activity decreased and increased, respectively. The introduction of 0.4 μM Ni in the medium containing ammonium ions as a sole source of nitrogen resulted in significantly increased NR activity in lettuce roots, and did not cause statistically significant changes of the enzyme activity in New Zealand spinach plants. At a high nickel level (Ni 40 or 80 μM), a significant decrease in the NR activity was observed in New Zealand spinach plants treated with nitrate or mixed nitrogen form, but it was much more marked in leaves than in roots. An exception was lack of significant changes of the enzyme activity in spinach leaves when plants were treated with 40 μM Ni and supplied with mixed nitrogen form, which resulted in the stronger reduction of the enzyme activity in roots than in leaves. The statistically significant drop in the NR activity was recorded in the aboveground parts of nickel-stressed lettuce plants supplied with NO3 –N or NH4NO3. At the same time, there were no statistically significant changes recorded in lettuce roots, except for the drop of the enzyme activity in the roots of NO3 -fed plants grown in the nutrient solution containing 80 μM Ni. An addition of high nickel doses to the nutrient solution contained ammonium nitrogen (NH4 +–N) did not affect the NR activity in New Zealand spinach plants and caused a high increase of this enzyme in lettuce organs, especially in roots. It should be stressed that, independently of nickel dose in New Zealand spinach plants supplied with ammonium form, NR activity in roots was dramatically higher than that in leaves. Moreover, in New Zealand spinach plants treated with NH4 +–N the enzyme activity in roots was even higher than in those supplied with NO3 –N.  相似文献

The influence of different N sources on medium pH variation and the effect of the external mycelium of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on nutrient dynamics were studied using a two-compartment, aseptic Petri plate system. VA mycorrhizal, transformed roots of carrot (Daucus carota L.) were cultured in the proximal compartment and external mycorrhizal mycelium in the distal compartment. The medium in the distal compartament contained N either as NO3 or as NH4 +. The pH and the anion and cation concentrations were measured every 15 days in filtrates prepared from the distal compartments. Thirteen weeks after colonization, there was a significant basification or a light acidification of the NO3 and NH4 + medium, respectively. There was no change in NO3 concentration but a significant decrease in NH4 + concentration. Treatments containing N as NO3 showed no variation in cations such asCa2+ and Mg2+ or anions such as PO4 2–, and SO4 2– but showed significant increases in the concentration of K+. Treatments containing N as NH4 + showed no variation in cations or anions, except for increases in the concentrations of K+ and Cl. Accepted: 7 March 1996  相似文献

Supplying both N forms (NH4 ++NO3 ) to the maize (Zea mays L.) plant can optimize productivity by enhancing reproductive development. However, the physiological factors responsible for this enhancement have not been elucidated, and may include the supply of cytokinin, a growth-regulating substance. Therefore, field and gravel hydroponic studies were conducted to examine the effect of N form (NH4 ++NO3 versus predominantly NO3 ) and exogenous cytokinin treatment (six foliar applications of 22 μM 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) during vegetative growth versus untreated) on productivity and yield of maize. For untreated plants, NH4 ++NO3 nutrition increased grain yield by 11% and whole shoot N content by 6% compared with predominantly NO3 . Cytokinin application to NO3 -grown field plants increased grain yield to that of NH4 ++NO3 -grown plants, which was the result of enhanced dry matter partitioning to the grain and decreased kernel abortion. Likewise, hydroponically grown maize supplied with NH4 ++NO3 doubled anthesis earshoot weight, and enhanced the partitioning of dry matter to the shoot. NH4 ++NO3 nutrition also increased earshoot N content by 200%, and whole shoot N accumulation by 25%. During vegetative growth, NH4 ++NO3 plants had higher concentrations of endogenous cytokinins zeatin and zeatin riboside in root tips than NO3 -grown plants. Based on these data, we suggest that the enhanced earshoot and grain production of plants supplied with NH4 ++NO3 may be partly associated with an increased endogenous cytokinin supply.  相似文献

The effect of two N-forms (NH4 + and NO3 ) and NaCl on pattern of accumulation of some essential inorganic nutrients was examined in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cv. Hisun 33. Eight-day-old plants of were subjected for 21 d to Hoagland's nutrient solution containing 8 mM N as NH4 + or NO3 ·, and salinized with and addition of NaCl to the growth medium had no significant effect on total leaf N. However, root N of NH4-supplied plants decreased significantly with increase in NaCl concentration, whereas that of NO3-supplied plants remained unaffected. There was no significant effect of NaCl on leaf or root P, but the NO3-supplied plants had significa concentration of leaf P than that of NH4-supplied plants at varying salt treatments. Salinity of the rooting med did not show any significant effect on Na+ concentrations of leaves or roots of plants subjected to two differen N. NH4-treated plants generally had greater concentrations of Cl in leaves and roots and lower K+ content in leaves than NO3-supplied plants. Ca2+ concentrations of leaves and roots and Mg2+ concentrations of leaves decreased in NH4-supplied plants due to NaCl, but they remained unaffected in NO3-treated plants.  相似文献

Ammonia (NH3) is the third most abundant N species in the atmosphere and, due to various natural and anthropogenic sources, can reach high concentrations in some areas. While some plants show effects of toxicity, others are capable of using this N-form and grow well without any utilization of soil-N. Acquisition of atmospheric NH3 will affect the acid-base balance of the plants as absorption and dissolution causes an alkalinisation (production of OH?) and assimilation of NH3 results in an acidification (generation of H+). As there is only a limited capacity for biochemical disposal of excess H+ in shoots, pH regulation may involve H+/OH? extrusion into the media via roots and transport of (in)organic ions between roots and above-ground parts of the plant. Our aim therefore was to assess NH3 acquisition by Lolium perenne and to study the effects of gas phase NH3 on growth, acid-base balance and mineral composition of the plants. The experiments therefore included application of a range of 14NH3 to the shoots and of 15N as NO3?, NH4+ or NH4NO3 to the roots, from which the amount of gas phase NH3 acquisition could be quantified. Analysis of the mineral composition provided data for calculation of acid-base balance as well as for water use efficiencies of the plants. The results indicate that over the range of NH3 supplied, plants from all treatments could utilize gas-phase NH3 as demonstrated by increases in growth and in N and C use efficiencies. Plants receiving NO3? via their roots had a higher capacity to use gaseous NH3 than those growing with NH4+. NH3 assimilation in shoots reduced both the acid load with NH4+ nutrition and the alkaline load with NO3? supply to the roots. The results of the experiments are discussed in relation to possible acid-base regulation mechanisms of the whole plant.  相似文献

Leymus chinensis (Trin.) Tzvel is a rhizomatous grass species in the Eastern Eurasian steppe zone that is often limited by low soil nitrogen availability. Although a previous study showed that the rhizomes of L. chinensis have the capacity to take up nitrogen, the importance of such uptake for nitrogen nutrition is unclear. Moreover, little is known regarding the inorganic nitrogen uptake kinetics of roots and rhizomes in response to nitrogen status. Here, we first found that ammonium is preferred over nitrate and glycine for L. chinensis growth. Using the 15N-labelling method, we found that the rate of ion influx into roots was approximately five-fold higher than into rhizomes under the same nitrogen content, and the ion influxes into roots and rhizomes under 0.05 mM N were greater than in the presence of 3 mM N, especially in the form of NH4+. Using a non-invasive micro-test technique, we characterised the patterns of NH4+ and NO3 fluxes in the root mature zone, root tip, rhizome mature zone, and rhizome tip following incubation in the solution with different N compounds and different N concentrations. These results suggest a dynamic balance between the uptake, utilisation, and excretion of nitrogen in L. chinensis.  相似文献

Although many studies support the importance of the external mycelium for nutrient acquisition of ectomycorrhizal plants, direct evidence for a significant contribution to host nitrogen nutrition is still scarce. We grew nonmycorrhizal seedlings and seedlings mycorrhizal with Paxillus involutus (Batsch) Fr. in a sand culture system with two compartments separated by a 45-m Nylon mesh. Hyphae, but not roots, can penetrate this net. Nutrient solutions were designed to limit seedling growth by nitrogen. Hyphal density in the hyphal compartment, host N status and shoot growth of mycorrhizal seedlings significantly increased in response to NH4 + addition to the hyphal compartment. Labeling the compartment only accessible to hyphae with 15NH4 + showed that the increase in N uptake in the mycorrhizal seedlings was a result of hyphal N acquisition from the hyphal compartment. These results indicate that hyphae of P. involutus may actively forage into N-rich patches and improve host N status and growth. In the mycorrhizal seedlings, which received additional NH4 + via their external mycelium, the increase in NH4 + supply less negatively affected Ca and Mg uptake than in nonmycorrhizal seedlings, where the additional NH4 + was directly supplied to the roots. This was most likely due to the close link of NH4 + uptake and H+ extrusion, which, in the nonmycorrhizal seedlings, lead to a strong acidification in the root compartment, and subsequently reduced Ca and Mg uptake, whereas in the mycorrhizal seedlings the site of intensive NH4 + uptake and acidification was in the hyphal and not in the root compartment. Our data support the idea that the ectomycorrhizal mycelium connected to an N-deficient host may actively forage for N. The mycelium may also be important as a biological buffer system ameliorating negative influence of high NH4 + supply on cation uptake.  相似文献

In a pot trial growth and transpiration of 3-year-old Douglas-fir seedlings on an acid, sandy soil was examined at a deficient (30 kg N ha –  1 year –  1) and an excessive level (120 kg N ha –  1 year –  1) of NH4 application. Dissolved ammonium sulphate was applied to the pots weekly for two growing seasons. In half of the pots a complete set of other nutrients was applied in optimal proportions to the applied nitrogen. Water supply was optimal and transpiration was recorded. At the end of the second treatment season irrigation was stopped for 2 weeks during dry and sunny weather. Both high application of NH4 and additional nutrients increased shoot growth and transpiration demand in the first treatment year. The root system was smaller at higher N level and this reduced water uptake accordingly. In the second year the combination of high NH4 + and additional nutrients affected root functioning predominantly due to salinity effects and this seriously decreased water uptake capacity and shoot water potentials, finally resulting in tree death. Without addition of other nutrients the high NH4 + application resulted in a high degree of soil acidification, which damaged the roots, that showed a decrease in water uptake capacity. At the low NH4 supply level soil acidification was lower, and root functioning was not affected, and the trees recovered quickly from the imposed drought. Higher needle K and P status depressed transpiration rates at the low NH4 application rate. Received: 9 January 1995 / Accepted: 18 September 1995  相似文献

A study was conducted to elucidate the effect of N form, either NH4 + or NO3 , on growth and solute composition of the salt-tolerant kallar grass [Leptochloa fusca (L.) Kunth] grown under 10 mM or 100 mM NaCl in hydroponics. Shoot biomass was not affected by N form, whereas NH4 + compared to NO3 nutrition caused an almost 4-fold reduction in the root biomass at both salinity levels. Under NH4 + nutrition, salinity had no effect on the biomass yield, whereas under NO3 nutrition, increasing salinity from 10 mM to 100 mM caused 23% and 36% reduction in the root and shoot biomass, respectively. The reduced root growth under NH4 + nutrition was not attributable to impaired shoot to root C allocation since N form did not affect the overall root sugar concentration and the starch concentration was even higher under NH4 + compared to NO3 nutrition. The low NH4 + (2 mM) and generally higher amino-N concentrations in NH4 +- compared to NO3 -fed plants indicated that the grass was able to effectively detoxify NH4 +. Salinity had no effect on Ca2+ and Mg2+ levels, whereas their concentration in shoots was lower under NH4 + compared to NO3 nutrition (over 66% reduction in Ca2+; over 20% reduction in Mg2+), but without showing deficiency symptoms. Ammonium compared to NO3 nutrition did not inhibit K+ uptake, and the K+-Na+ selectivity either remained unaffected or it was higher under NH4 + than under NO3 nutrition. Results suggested that while NH4 + versus NO3 nutrition substantially reduced root growth, and also strongly modified anion concentrations and to a minor extent concentrations of divalent cations in shoots, it did not influence salt tolerance of kallar grass.  相似文献

The effects of nitrogen form and phosphorus source on the growth, nutrient uptake and rhizosphere soil property of tea (Camellia sinensis L.) were investigated in a pot experiment. The experiment was performed with a compartmental cropping device, which enables the collection of rhizosphere soil at defined distances from the root of tea plant. Nitrogen was supplied as nitrate or ammonium in combination with soluble phosphorus as Ca(H2PO4)2 or insoluble P as rock phosphate. The leaf dry matter production of tea was significantly greater in the treatments with NH4 + than NO3 -, whereas dry matter production of root and stem was not significantly affected. Addition of phosphorus as either source did not influence the dry matter production. The concentrations of K in root, Mg and Ca in both the shoot and root supplied with NO3 - were significantly higher than in NH4 + and influence of P sources was minor. On the contrary, Al and Mn concentrations were significantly larger in NH4 --fed plants which could be attributed to remarkably increased availability of Al and Mn caused by acidification of the rhizosphere soil (the first 1-mm soil section from the root surface) with NH4–N nutrition. The concentration of N in shoot was also significantly higher in NH4- than in NO3-fed plants, indicating higher use efficiency of NH4–N. Whatever the phosphate source, rhizosphere pH declined in ammonium compared to in nitrate treatment. The pH decrease was much larger when no P or soluble P were applied and reached 0.85–1.30 units which extended to 3–5 mm away from the root surface. Exchangeable acidity, content of exchangeable Al and Mn were also considerably higher in the rhizosphere soils of NH4 + fed tea plants. Significant amounts of P dissolved from rock phosphate accumulated in rhizosphere of NH4 +, not NO3 -, suggesting that the dissolution of rock phosphate was induced by the proton excreted by tea root fed with ammonium. With soluble P addition, shoot and root P concentrations were greater in NH4 + than in NO3 - treatment and it appeared that this difference could not be sufficiently explained by the available P content in soil which was only slightly higher in NH4 + treatment. With rock phosphate addition, the shoot and root P concentrations were hardly affected by nitrogen form, although the available P content was much higher and accumulated in the rhizosphere soil supplied with ammonium. The reason for this was discussed with regard to the inter-relationship of Al with P uptake. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Nitrogen dynamics in Lake Okeechobee: forms, functions, and changes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Total nitrogen (TN) in Lake Okeechobee, a large, shallow, turbid lake in south Florida, has averaged between 90 and 150 μM on an annual basis since 1983. No TN trends are evident, despite major storm events, droughts, and nutrient management changes in the watershed. To understand the relative stability of TN, this study evaluates nitrogen (N) dynamics at three temporal/spatial levels: (1) annual whole lake N budgets, (2) monthly in-lake water quality measurements in offshore and nearshore areas, and (3) isotope addition experiments lasting 3 days and using 15N-ammonium (15NH4 +) and 15N-nitrate (15NO3 ) at two offshore locations. Budgets indicate that the lake is a net sink for N. TN concentrations were less variable than net N loads, suggesting that in-lake processes moderate these net loads. Monthly NO3 concentrations were higher in the offshore area and higher in winter for both offshore and nearshore areas. Negative relationships between the percentage of samples classified as algal blooms (defined as chlorophyll a > 40 μg l−1) and inorganic N concentrations suggest N-limitation. Continuous-flow experiments over intact sediment cores measured net fluxes (μmol N m−2 h−1) between 0 and 25 released from sediments for NH4 +, 0–60 removed by sediments for NO3 , and 63–68 transformed by denitrification. Uptake rates in the water column (μmol N m−2 h−1) determined by isotope dilution experiments and normalized for water depth were 1,090–1,970 for NH4 + and 59–119 for NO3 . These fluxes are similar to previously reported results. Our work suggests that external N inputs are balanced in Lake Okeechobee by denitrification.  相似文献

The release of chemical compounds from plant roots that suppress soil nitrification is termed biological nitrification inhibition (BNI). Determining the environmental factors that control the synthesis and release of BNI-compounds from Brachiaria humidicola (Rendle) Schweick, a tropical pasture grass that thrives on acid soils, is the focus of this investigation. Because the BNI trait is related to the N status of the plant, we investigated the possibility that the expression of this trait would be related to the forms of N found in the root environment. Plants were grown with two sources of N, NH4+ or NO3 for 60 days and the release of BNI-compounds monitored. Only plants grown with NH4+ released BNI-compounds from roots. The presence of NH4+ and possibly the secondary effect of its uptake (i.e., acidic pH) in the root environment significantly enhanced the release of BNI-compounds. Both the NH4+ and NO3 grown plants responded to the stimulus from NH4+ in the root environment. BNI-compounds found in root tissue and their release were nearly three times greater in NH4+ grown than from NO3 grown plants. The BNI-compounds released from roots composed of at least three active components—Type-I (stable to pH changes from 3.0 to 10), Type-II (temporarily loses its inhibitory effect at a pH higher than a threshold pH of 4.5 and the inhibitory effect is reestablished when the root exudate pH is adjusted to <4.5) and Type-III (inhibitory effect is irreversibly lost if the pH of the root exudate reaches 10.0 or above). A major portion of BNI-compounds released in the presence of NH4+ is of Type-I. In the absence of NH4+, mostly Type-II and Type-III BNI-compounds were released. The BNI-compounds inhibited the function of Nitrosomonas europaea through the blocking of both ammonia monooxygenase and hydroxylamino oxidoreductase pathways. These results indicate that the release of BNI-compounds from B. humidicola roots is a regulated function and that presence of NH4+ in the root environment is necessary for the sustained synthesis and release of BNI.  相似文献

The effects of nitrogen source on iron deficiency responses were investigated in two Vitis genotypes, one tolerant to limestone chlorosis Cabernet Sauvignon (Vitis vinifera cv.) and the other susceptible Gloire de Montpellier (Vitis riparia cv.). Plants were grown with or without Fe(III)-EDTA, and with NO3 alone or a mixture of NO3 and NH4+. Changes in pH of the nutrient solution and root ferric chelate reductase (FC-R) activity were monitored over one week. We carried out quantitative metabolic profiling (1H-NMR) and determined the activity of enzymes involved in organic acid metabolism in root tips. In iron free-solutions, with NO3 as the sole nitrogen source, the typical Fe-deficiency response reactions as acidification of the growth medium and enhanced FC-R activity in the roots were observed only in the tolerant genotype. Under the same nutritional conditions, organic acid accumulation (mainly citrate and malate) was found for both genotypes. In the presence of NH4+, the sensitive genotype displayed some decrease in pH of the growth medium and an increase in FC-R activity. For both genotypes, the presence of NH4+ ions decreased significantly the organic acid content of roots. Both Vitis genotypes were able to take up NH4+ from the nutrient solution, regardless of their sensitivity to iron deficiency. The presence of N-NH4+ modified typical Fe stress responses in tolerant and sensitive Vitis genotypes.  相似文献

The widespread use of NO3 fertilization has had a major ecological impact. NH4+ nutrition may help to reduce this impact, although high NH4+ concentrations are toxic for most plants. The underlying tolerance mechanisms are not yet fully understood, although they are thought to include the limitation of C, the disruption of ion homeostasis, and a wasteful NH4+ influx/efflux cycle that carries an extra energetic cost for root cells. In this study, high irradiance (HI) was found to induce a notable tolerance to NH4+ in the range 2.5-10 mM in pea plants by inducing higher C availability, as shown by carbohydrate content. This capacity was accompanied by a general lower relative N content, indicating that tolerance is not achieved through higher net N assimilation on C-skeletons, and it was also not attributable to increased GS content or activity in roots or leaves. Moreover, HI plants showed higher ATP content and respiration rates. This extra energy availability is related to the internal NH4+ content regulation (probably NH4+ influx/efflux) and to an improvement of the cell ionic balance. The limited C availability at lower irradiance (LI) and high NH4+ resulted in a series of metabolic imbalances, as reflected in a much higher organic acid content, thereby suggesting that the origin of the toxicity in plants cultured at high NH4+ and LI is related to their inability to avoid large-scale accumulation of the NH4+ ion.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) limits plant productivity and its uptake and assimilation may be regulated by N source, N availability, and nitrate reductase activity (NRA). Knowledge of how these factors interact to affect N uptake and assimilation processes in woody angiosperms is limited. We fertilized 1-year-old, half-sib black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) seedlings with ammonium (NH4 +) [as (NH4)2SO4], nitrate (NO3 ) (as NaNO3), or a mixed N source (NH4NO3) at 0, 800, or 1,600 mg N plant−1 season−1. Two months following final fertilization, growth, in vivo NRA, plant N status, and xylem exudate N composition were assessed. Specific leaf NRA was higher in NO3 -fed and NH4NO3-fed plants compared to observed responses in NH4 +-fed seedlings. Regardless of N source, N addition increased the proportion of amino acids (AA) in xylem exudate, inferring greater NRA in roots, which suggests higher energy cost to plants. Root total NRA was 37% higher in NO3 -fed than in NH4 +-fed plants. Exogenous NO3 was assimilated in roots or stored, so no difference was observed in NO3 levels transported in xylem. Black walnut seedling growth and physiology were generally favored by the mixed N source over NO3 or NH4 + alone, suggesting NH4NO3 is required to maximize productivity in black walnut. Our findings indicate that black walnut seedling responses to N source and level contrast markedly with results noted for woody gymnosperms or herbaceous angiosperms.  相似文献

Preference for NH4+ or NO3 nutrition by the perennial legume Sesbania sesban (L.) Merr. was assessed by supplying plants with NH4+ and NO3 alone or mixed at equal concentrations (0.5 mM) in hydroponic culture. In addition, growth responses of S. sesban to NH4+ and NO3 nutrition and the effects on root nodulation and nutrient and mineral composition of the plant tissues were evaluated in a hydroponic setup at a range of external concentration of NH4+ and NO3 (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 2 and 5 mM). Seedlings of S. sesban grew equally well when supplied with either NH4+ or NO3 alone or mixed and had high relative growth rates (RGRs) ranging between 0.19 and 0.21 d−1. When larger plants of S. sesban were supplied with NH4+ or NO3 alone, the RGRs and shoot elongation rates were not affected by the external concentration of inorganic N. At external N concentrations up to 0.5 mM nodulation occurred and contributed to the N nutrition through fixation of gaseous N2 from the atmosphere. For both NH4+ and NO3-fed plants the N concentration in the plant tissues, particularly water-extractable NO3, increased at high supply concentrations, and concentrations of mineral cations generally decreased. It is concluded that S. sesban can grow without an external inorganic N supply by fixing atmospheric N2 gas via root nodules. Also, S. sesban grows well on both NH4+ and NO3 as the external N source and the plant can tolerate relatively high concentrations of NH4+. This wide ecological amplitude concerning N nutrition makes S. sesban very useful as a N2-fixing fallow crop in N deficient areas and also a candidate species for use in constructed wetland systems for the treatment of NH4+ rich waters.  相似文献
