Tree lizards (Urosaurus ornatus) are a highly accessible species useful in testing theories of life-history evolution and behavioural ecology. A polymerase chain reaction-based method was used to isolate nine polymorphic tetranucleotide microsatellite loci from the genome of these lizards. The isolated loci displayed 5 to 9 alleles in the populations screened. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.333 to 0.900. Results indicate these loci now provide a basis to study mate choice, parentage, and population genetic structure within this species. 相似文献

Isolation due to both geological barriers and range contractions during the Pleistocene glacial maxima has been an important cause of diversification of arid-adapted species in the North American deserts. Tree lizards, Urosaurus ornatus, are distributed across much of the southwestern arid regions and can tolerate a wide range of environments. Thus, they may have avoided large-scale shifts in distribution caused by Pleistocene climate change and any subsequent evolutionary impacts. Cytochrome b sequences were sampled from U. ornatus across the northern part of their range to test if current structure of these populations resulted from post-Pleistocene range expansion and habitat fragmentation, or prior geological isolation. Phylogenetic analyses found geographical structuring of populations consistent with a model of long-term geographical isolation corresponding to each of the desert regions. The two post-Pleistocene hypotheses were not well supported as estimated times of divergence predated the retreat of the last continental ice sheet. Populations in different regions were impacted by different processes. Southern populations of U. ornatus appear to have remained largely independent of more derived northern and eastern populations during Pleistocene climate change, while populations in regions containing more derived populations showed evidence of more recent range expansion (Colorado Plateau). As populations of U. ornatus attest to, the complex and dynamic history of the southwestern USA has left a deep-rooted and multifaceted imprint on genetic and phylogeographical structure of the species living there. 相似文献

In response to stressful events, most vertebrates rapidly elevate plasma glucocorticoid levels. Corticosterone release stimulates physiological and behavioral responses that can promote survival while suppressing behaviors that are not crucial to immediate survival. Corticosterone also has preparatory effects for subsequent stressors. Using male tree lizards (Urosaurus ornatus), we tested our prediction that elevated corticosterone is important for mediating and enhancing antipredator behaviors. Male tree lizards express developmentally fixed polymorphisms that are mediated by early organizational actions of steroid hormones, and thus we also tested the hypothesis that morph-specific differences in antipredator behaviors of adults are independent of circulating corticosterone levels. Plasma corticosterone levels were elevated exogenously for 12-16 h using non-invasive dermal patches, and we then compared the behavioral responses of these corticosterone-patched males to control-patched males during a simulated encounter with a caged predator (collared lizard, Crotaphytus nebrius) in outdoor enclosures. Elevating corticosterone did not alter the antipredator behavioral repertoire of each male morph, but did enhance their responses during the predator encounter: all corticosterone-patched males responded more quickly, hid longer, and displayed more toward the predator than control-patched males. With the corticosterone patch, the non-territorial and wary orange morph was still behaviorally the most wary morph, responding more quickly and hiding longer than either the bolder orange-blue or mottled morphs. Smaller males were generally warier than larger males, regardless of the endocrine treatment or color morph type. In sum, elevated circulating corticosterone enhances antipredator responses for all male tree lizard morphs, without altering morph-specific or size-specific differences in their behavioral responses. 相似文献

Animals often exhibit individual variation in their behavioral responses to the same stimuli in the biotic or abiotic environment. To elucidate the endocrine mechanisms mediating such behavioral variation, we have been studying a species of lizard with two distinct male phenotypes. Here we document behavioral variation across years in one of the two male phenotypes of the tree lizard, Urosaurus ornatus, and present hormone data that support an endocrine mechanism underlying this behavioral variation. Nonterritorial male tree lizards appear to be nomadic rovers in some years and sedentary satellites in others, whereas territorial males are always territorial. This behavioral variation by nonterritorial males was correlated with environmental conditions. In environmentally harsher years (as assessed by rainfall), nonterritorial males appear to behave as nomads, whereas in more benign years they are more site-faithful. A between-year comparison of levels of corticosterone and testosterone for the two male phenotypes supports a model for how hormones underlie the males' reproductive tactics, particularly the nonterritorial males' behavioral plasticity. In an environmentally harsher (drier) year, both types of males had higher corticosterone levels than in a milder (wetter) year, but only nonterritorial males had lower testosterone in the relatively harsher year. We propose that disruptive selection for individual variation in hormonal responses to environmental cues may be a common mechanism underlying the evolution of alternative male reproductive tactics in this and other species. 相似文献

Repeated matings offset costs of reproduction in female crickets 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary Courtship food gifts can be a significant source of nutrition to females and costly for males to produce; hence, costs of reproduction should be reduced for multiple-mating females and increased for multiplemating males in a gift-giving species. We tested this hypothesis by experimentally manipulating mating opportunities of males and females of two cricket species,Gryllodes sigillatus, a gift-giving species andGryllus veletis, a non-gift-giving species. Females of both species consume the externally attached spermatophore after mating, but inG. sigillatus, the sperm-containing ampulla is accompanied by a large gelatinous spermatophylax. In both species, survival of mated females given limited access to males was reduced relative to virgin females, thus suggesting a cost of reproduction to females. However, females given unlimited mating opportunities lived as long as virgins and also produced significantly more offspring than limited-access females. These results suggest that benefits of repeated matings, particularly those arising through spermatophore consumption, offset costs of reproduction in females. Lack of a treatment by species interaction suggests that females of both species derive nutritional benefits through spermatophore consumption, and that any additional advantage to the consumption of the spermatophylax inG. sigillatus is offset by more frequent mating byG. veletis females. In contrast to females, varying mating opportunities had no effect on male survival, suggesting that mating effort is not very costly to males. Male survival increased linearly with body mass but only when males were food-deprived, suggesting that larger males possess greater initial energy reserves to sustain their longevity when food-stressed. 相似文献

Costs of reproduction include the costs of mating and egg production. Specific techniques such as irradiation or genetic mutation have been used to divide the expense into costs of mating and egg production in previous studies. We tried to divide the costs in the adzuki bean beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), which needs some kinds of bean as an oviposition substrate. Mated females that were not allowed to lay eggs had a shorter life span than virgin females, but they had a longer life span than mated females that were allowed to lay eggs. The results showed two independent significant costs, mating and egg production, on the life span in C. chinensis. Costs of mating, however, include the costs of sexual harassment by males and copulation itself, and we need further studies to divide the costs. The present method for dividing the cost of reproduction into costs of mating and egg production can be applied to a broad taxonomic range of insect species, and thus it will be a useful model system for inter-specific comparisons of costs of mating and egg production. 相似文献

We investigated the effect of exposure to males on female longevity and egg production in the stalk-eyed fly, Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni. In this species, females typically mate several times each morning over a lifetime that can span several months. We hypothesised that high costs of mating with males would be incompatible with the life history of this species. We predicted that 1) female longevity costs of exposure to males would be low, and 2) that the magnitude of mating-induced fecundity increases in C. dalmanni, if present, would also be low. We tested the predictions by comparing the longevity and lifetime fecundity of virgin and mated females. In line with prediction 1), the longevity difference between virgin and fully reproductive females was small and of borderline significance. In line with prediction 2), egg production was not significantly higher in females continually exposed to males than for virgin females. Our results suggest that costs of reproduction resulting from exposure to males are low in species that mate promiscuously at high rates. 相似文献

To explore the role of the thyroid gland in the control of seasonal reproduction in obligately photoperiodic American tree sparrows (Spizella arborea), the effects of (1) thyroxine administered in drinking water to thyroid-intact photosensitive or photorefractory birds, and (2) radiothyroidectomy before and after photostimulation and during photorefractoriness were examined. Chronic administration of pharmacological doses of thyroxine induced testicular growth and usually regression in initially photosensitive birds held on short or intermediate daylengths. Some thyroxine-treated birds with regressed testes were absolutely photorefractory, but most remained photosensitive. Exogenous thyroxine never induced testicular growth in photorefractory birds moved to short days, though it often impeded, and sometimes even blocked, the recovery of photosensitivity. Although circumstantial, these effects of exogenous thyroxine are consistent with an hypothesis that assigns to thyroid hormones two roles — one stimulatory and the other inhibitory — in the control of seasonal reproduction. Radiothyroidectomy before photostimulation inhibited (but did not prevent) photoinduced testicular growth, blocked spontaneous testicular regression, suppressed molt, and prevented photorefractoriness. Moreover, as demonstrated by testicular growth after thyroxine replacemnt therapy, radiothyroidectomy during photorefractoriness later restored photosensitivity despite continued photostimulation. Thus, euthyroidism is an essential condition for maximizing (but not for initiating) photoinduced testicular growth and for triggering and maintaining photorefractoriness in photostimulated tree sparrows. However, when performed early during photostimulation, radiothyroidectomy neither immediately induced nor later blocked spontaneous testicular regression. Thus, endogenous thyroid hormones and long days may interact during a critical period to program a sequence of physiological events that plays out as photorefractoriness in chronically photostimulated birds. Such an organizational event cannot be permanent, for seasonal reproduction is episodic and its control mechanism necessarily cyclic. Because thyroidectomy simulated the well-known restorative effect of short days (and exogenous thyroxine impeded it), short days may dissipate photorefractoriness by creating a milieu wherein thyroid hormones are deficient or inactive.Abbreviations ANOVA

We investigated the role of photosynthesis by reproductive organs in meeting the carbon costs of sexual reproduction in the snow-buttercup, Ranunculus adoneus. The exposed green carpels of snow-buttercup flowers have 1–2 stomata each. Net carbon assimilation rates of flowers are negative during bud expansion, but rise to zero at maturity, and become positive during early fruit growth. Experimental removal of separate whorls of flower parts demonstrated that the showy, nectary-housing petals account for most of the respiration cost of flower presentation. Conversely, photosynthesis by female organs contributes to a flower's carbon balance. Dipteran pollinators of R. adoneus are most active in sunny mid-morning to mid-afternoon intervals. At this time of day, rates of carpel photosynthesis (Amax) meet respiratory costs of pollinator attraction in fully expanded flowers. Achenes remain photosynthetically active until dispersal, and positive net carbon assimilation rates characterize infructescences throughout fruit maturation. Photosynthetic rates of achenes are positively correlated with infructescence growth rates. We tested the causal basis of this relationship by experimentally shading developing infructescences. Mature achenes from shaded infructescences were 16–18% smaller than those from unshaded controls. Leaf photosynthetic rates did not differ between plants bearing shaded and unshaded seed heads. Since female reproductive organs are only 8% more costly in terms of caloric investment than male ones and contribute to their own carbon balance, it is plausible that the energy cost of male function equals or exceeds that of female function in this hermaphroditic species. 相似文献

Summary First clutches of double-brooded eastern phoebes Sayornis phoebe were manipulated (up two eggs, down 2 eggs or no change) to test for intraseasonal reproductive tradeoffs and to test whether size of first brood influenced food delivery rates to nestlings and nestling quality in second broods.Considering all nests from both broods, rate of feeding nestlings increased linearly with brood size but nestling mass per nest decreased with increasing brood size. High nestling weights in small broods may have resulted from parents delivering better quality food, but we did not test this.Among treatment groups in first broods, nestlings from decreased broods weighed more than those in control or increased broods. Treatment did not influence the likelihood that second nests would be attempted after successful first nests nor did it alter the interval between nests. Nestlings of parents that renested weighed more than those of parents that did not, regardless of treatment, suggesting that post-fledging care may preclude renesting. Mass of individual females did not change between broods, regardless of brood size. Clutch sizes of second attempts were not affected by manipulations of first broods but increasing first broods reduced the number of nestlings parents were able to raise to day 11 in their second broods. However, manipulation of first broods did not affect mean nestling mass per nest of nestlings that survived to day 11.In phoebes, parents of small first broods are able to raise nestlings in better condition. We predict that in harsh years, parents of small first broods would be more likely to renest. Parents of enlarged first broods sacrificed quality of offspring in second broods, which seems a reasonable strategy if nestlings from second broods have lower reproductive value. 相似文献

Convoluta roscoffensis collected from the natural habitat in reproductive condition laid egg capsules for up to 16 weeks under laboratory conditions. However, both the number of capsules laid and number of embryos per capsule decreased with time in culture. When animals were maintained in an alternating light and dark regime, the capsules were laid during the dark period. Animals ceased to deposit egg capsules within five days of incubation in the photosynthetic inhibitor, DCMU. This suggests that metabolism of the algal symbionts of C. roscoffensis contributes to egg production. 相似文献

We examined costs of sexual reproduction and clonal propagation, and their consequences for resource allocation in the clonal stoloniferous herb, Potentilla anserina, a typical pioneer species in disturbed areas. We used heavy-metal treatment in soil to create unfavourable growing conditions, because costs of reproduction are more likely to be expressed when resources are limited. We also studied whether heavy metals affect the plasticity of clonal growth form that enables the plants to avoid poor growing conditions. Ramets collected from field were grown in a greenhouse under the heavy-metal treatment consisting of a control and two levels of heavy-metals added in soil. Clonal propagation was costly in terms of total biomass of flowering ramets. Also the costs of sexual reproduction were detected in flowering ramets. Contrary to our predictions, the costs of flower production were visible in the control but not in the heavy-metal contaminated plants. Only the flowering ramets were able to produce longer stolons under heavy-metal stress, but the stolon biomass was not affected by heavy metals. Results indicate that clonal propagation and sexual reproduction may be costly for P. anserina. However, the costs are modified by heavy-metal contamination.Co-ordinating editor: J. Tuomi 相似文献

Summary The consequences of reproduction for body weight, growth and survival were studied in a Swiss population of the explosive breeder, Rana temporaria. Males and females continuously loss weight in the range of 0.5% of total body weight per day from the breeding migration throughout May. Females also lost about 33% (1983) and 29% (1984) due to spawning. In addition to this significant year-to-year variation, there was also considerable individual variation in reproductive output. Skeletochronological techniques indicated that breeding male or female frogs experienced a growth reduction of several millimeters relative to non-breeding frogs of the same body size. There was no relationship between an individual female's reproductive output in consecutive years or with her subsequent growth or survival. It was concluded that weight loss is caused by a seasonally elevated metabolism in combination with a lack of feeding and represents a basic energetic cost of reproduction, resulting in lowered growth. Individual variation in relative reproductive output is mostly environmentally induced and is not an expression of different reproductive strategies. This may explain the lack of trade-offs that are predicted by the cost-of-reproduction-hypothesis. 相似文献

Artificial oviposition sites were used to estimate egg deposition rates in the field. Females laid an average of 10.76 eggs/minute with a mean duration of 22.81 minutes, giving an average clutch size of 245 eggs. Since one mating corresponded to one clutch of eggs, lifetime mating success was used as a measure of the number of clutches produced. Mean lifetime clutch production was 5.91 clutches per female, equating to 1447 eggs per female per lifetime. Eggs were hatched in the laboratory at temperatures comparable with those in the field. Hatching was highly synchronised and the overall hatching success was 75.1%. Causes of egg mortality in the laboratory were limited to infertility and unhatchability. Since no other sources of egg mortality could be found at the study site, this value was a good reflection of hatching success in the field. Lifetime egg production and hatching success were used to estimate the number of viable offspring produced per female, giving a higher order estimate of reproductive success than has previously been published for a zygopteran. 相似文献

I present the 6- year reproductive histories of three wild female siamang (Hylobates syndactylus)and four white-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar)at the Ketambe Research Station (Sumatra, Indonesia). Reproductive output varied considerably among females. Two females failed
to gestate: both were nulliparous young adult H. lar,one of which remained unpaired for 4 years after dispersing from her group, while the other lost her recently acquired mate
to another female. Only one- (a white-handed gibbon)- gave birth more than once, yielding interbirth intervals of 22 and 31
months. Pair bond stability or reduced interspecific feeding competition or both factors may have contributed to the brevity
of these intervals. The other females- one H. lar,and three H. syndactylus-each gave birth once, suggesting minimum interbirth intervals exceeding 4–5 years (H. lar)and 3 years (H. syndactylus)in these individuals. Even given the pronounced variation observed among H. lar, these data suggest that interbirth intervals may often exceed the 2- to 3- year interval commonly attributed to these two
species. Sources of reproductive failure were 1) maternal abandonment of the neonate due to impaired ability to provide maternal
care (H. syndactylus,),(2) premature or stillbirth (H. syndactylus,),and (3) pregnancy termination (H. lar). These data and a review of information on longevity and age at menarche suggest that the actual lifetime reproductive output
of a siamang or white-handed gibbon female may often fall far short of the 10 offspring/lifetime originally proposed for these
species. Indeed, females may rear as few as five offspring to weaning in a lifetime, which is a figure reminiscent of the
reproductive potential of some pongids. Finally, variance in female reproductive success is higher than expected in these
monogamous species, which suggests that females (and males) are under strong selective pressure to exert mate choice, possibly
through acquisition of (new) mates and extrapair copulations. Future research must clarify the availability of opportunities
for paired adults to engage in these sociosexual behaviors. 相似文献

Caprella mutica Schurin is an epifaunal amphipod crustacean which originates in north-east Asia and has spread throughout the world, yet
very little is known about fundamental aspects of this species biology. This paper examined the survivorship of C. mutica reared under laboratory conditions at 13–14 °C, 14 h light: 10 h dark photoperiod and fed commercial salmon feed, the diatom
Cylindrotheca fusiformis Reumann and Lewin, the macroalgae, Fucus vesiculosus L. and given no additional feed. In addition, growth, maturation and reproduction of C. mutica fed C. fusiformis were assessed. No significant difference in survivorship of C. mutica was observed for the diet types over the experimental period. C. mutica was able to survive for upto 20 days without additional food. Average survival time of males and females fed the diatom,
C. fusiformis was 68.8 d (range = 62–73 d) and 82.0 d (range = 76–92 d). Juvenile C. mutica emerged from the brood pouch at a body length of 1.33 mm and moulted at 5.0–11.0 day intervals. Males exhibited faster growth
rates than females after Instar VII. Females produced their first brood at Instar VII, 24–26 days post-hatching and with an
average body length of 8.5 mm. Each female had an average of two broods sequentially and these were released at 20.2 day intervals.
Brood size for a single female increased from 11.3 (±9.9) hatchlings at Instar VII to 25.5 (±11.5) at Instar IX and the maximum
number of hatchlings produced by a single female was 82. The results suggest that C. mutica exhibits a number of life-history traits that would potentially enable it to withstand global transportation and to rapidly
become established in an introduced region, if environmental conditions are suitable. 相似文献

Investment into the current reproductive attempt is thought to be at the expense of survival and/or future reproduction. Individuals are therefore expected to adjust their decisions to their physiological state and predictable aspects of environmental quality. The main predictions of the individual optimization hypothesis for bird clutch sizes are: (1) an increase in the number of recruits with an increasing number of eggs in natural broods, with no corresponding impairment of parental survival or future reproduction, and (2) a decrease in the fitness of parents in response to both negative and positive brood size manipulation, as a result of a low number of recruits, poor future reproduction of parents, or both. We analysed environmental influences on costs and optimization of reproduction on 6 years of natural and experimentally manipulated broods in a Central European population of the collared flycatcher. Based on dramatic differences in caterpillar availability, we classified breeding seasons as average and rich food years. The categorization was substantiated by the majority of present and future fitness components of adults and offspring. Neither observational nor experimental data supported the individual optimization hypothesis, in contrast to a Scandinavian population of the species. The quality of fledglings deteriorated, and the number of recruits did not increase with natural clutch size. Manipulation revealed significant costs of reproduction to female parents in terms of future reproductive potential. However, the influence of manipulation on recruitment was linear, with no significant polynomial effect. The number of recruits increased with manipulation in rich food years and tended to decrease in average years, so control broods did not recruit more young than manipulated broods in any of the year types. This indicates that females did not optimize their clutch size, and that they generally laid fewer eggs than optimal in rich food years. Mean yearly clutch size did not follow food availability, which suggests that females cannot predict food supply of the brood-rearing period at the beginning of the season. This lack of information on future food conditions seems to prevent them from accurately estimating their optimal clutch size for each season. Our results suggest that individual optimization may not be a general pattern even within a species, and alternative mechanisms are needed to explain clutch size variation. 相似文献

The mite Varroa jacobsoni was reared in artificial gelatin cells under laboratory conditions and the possible presence of factors inhibiting Varroa reproduction was studied. In cells infested with three mites, the mean offspring per female was reduced to 75% of that in singly infested cells. When gelatin cells were used for two successive rearing cycles, both the proportion of reproducing females and the offspring per reproducing female were significantly lower in cells that had contained an infested larva during the first rearing cycle than in those with an uninfested larva. The mean reduction of the offspring per female was 48%; this suggests that inhibitors of the reproduction are released into infested cells. Treatment of gelatin cells with the hexane extract of cells in which an infested bee pupa had developed caused a 21% reduction in the mean offspring per female, with a difference close to the significance level (p=0.07). 相似文献
