Eighty-five unhatched eggs from 68 white-tailed sea eagle clutches were collected during 1965–1978 along the Baltic coast and in Lapland. The eggs were analysed individually for residue levels of DDT and its metabolites, PCB and mercury. Pooled samples were analysed for levels of dieldrin and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). The variations in residue levels within and between clutches were studied before the material was grouped for investigations of relationships between reproduction and contamination.
Levels of DDE, PCB and mercury were significantly higher in the Baltic as compared to the Lapland material. In the Baltic, the reproductive success on a clutch basis and on a nest basis was significantly and negatively correlated to the egg residue levels of DDE and PCB; no correlation was found with mercury. Critical ranges were estimated to 500–600 mg kg1 of DDE and/or 800–900 mg kg−1 of PCB (lipid basis). The levels of dieldrin and HCB in the pooled samples were not considered important to reproduction. In a comparative study including six sea eagle and six bald eagle populations, productivity showed the strongest correlation with DDE.  相似文献

Breeding biology of the Barn Owl Tyto alba in central Mali   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Data were obtained on 178 clutches of African Barn Owls in central Mali from four breeding seasons during 1979–1983. Significantly more clutches were laid in 1979–1980 and significantly fewer in 1980– 1981 than the average for the 4 years and there were significantly more clutches laid in the middle period of the annual breeding season. The egg volume was significantly smaller at the beginning of the breeding season and significantly larger in the middle than the overall mean with eggs of second clutches being larger than those of first clutches. The clutch size was 605 eggs of which 479 hatched. The number of young fledged per successful nest was 319 and was 1 83 for all nesting attempts. The month was the only variable shown to affect significantly the clutch size, eggs hatched and fledging rate, the highest success rates being associated with the middle of the breeding period. The average interval between the hatching of eggs was 2–31 days. Survival rates (47'1%) to fledging were significantly affected by year (1981–1982 being the least) and month (mid-season birds the best). The order of hatching significantly affected age at death or disappearance, the first-hatched birds surviving the longest. The year significantly affected age at fledging, the young from the year in which most clutches were laid leaving the nest at the youngest age and those associated with the year having the least number of clutches remaining in the nest the longest. The month of hatching also affected fledging age, birds at the extremes of the breeding season fledging at older ages. The discussion compares these data with those from elsewhere.  相似文献

We present data from a 17-year study of the population biology of a growing population of Spanish imperial eagles Aquila adalberti across most of its breeding range. The objective of this study was to analyse the effects of age, supplemental feeding and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) on several breeding parameters of this population of eagles. Average clutch size was 2.2 eggs per clutch, and the average incubation time was 41.7 days per clutch. Fledging occurred an average of 76.8 days after hatching, the length of the fledgling period was not correlated to clutch size. The annual average percentage of pairs laying eggs was 88%. A significant reduction in the percentage of pairs laying eggs in the period 1992–1994 (from 91 to 81%) coincided with most of the eagles’ territories being affected by the rabbit epizootic disease, RHD, which reduced their food supply significantly. Average productivity was 1.23 chicks per monitored territory, average breeding success was 1.40 chicks in a clutch per territory and the average fledging rate was 1.69 chicks per territory with hatching success. The main known causes of breeding failure during incubation were nest collapse and human disturbance. During chick-rearing, total or partial chick losses were mainly caused by siblicide, disease, malnutrition or nest collapse. In 26.2% of the 1372 monitored breeding attempts, at least one of the breeding birds was a subadult (the male in 56.1% of the cases, the female in 15.5% and both sexes in 28.4% of cases). In cases of mixed-aged pairs (n = 205), 70.7% were the result of a substitution, and 29.3% were the result of the forming of a new pair. Egg laying took place significantly earlier and breeding success was higher in territories occupied by adults than in those occupied by subadults. Breeding parameters were higher in high-quality (rabbit-rich) territories than in low-quality (rabbit-poor) territories, but only for those territories occupied by adults. The values obtained in the territories occupied by adults were only significantly higher than in those of the subadults in high-quality territories. Age and territory quality thus simultaneously affected reproductive output.  相似文献

Food availability is an important factor affecting breeding success in birds. Food supplementation experiments in birds have in general focused on the effects on reproductive success in terms of female investment (laying date, clutch size, egg size), however, it is also known that the estimation of mate quality based on sexually selected signals influences female reproductive investment. In the particular case of magpies, females use nest size, a post-mating sexually selected signal, to assess male's likelihood to invest in reproduction, and accordingly adjust reproductive investment (clutch size). Then, the possible effects of food supplementation on female reproductive investment could be mediated by other variables related to parental quality, such as nest size in magpies. In the present study, we explore if higher food availability in a magpie territory affected both male sexually selected traits (i.e. nest size) and female reproductive investment (laying date, egg size, clutch size). We performed a food supplementation experiment in which we experimentally increased food availability in several magpie territories, keeping others as controls. In food-supplemented territories, males built significantly larger nests and females significantly increased egg size by 4.1% compared to control females. Results suggest that the continuous provisioning of protein rich food allowed magpie females to increase egg size. However, laying date and clutch size did not differ between control and food-supplemented magpie pairs. Food availability also affected the relationship between female reproductive investment and nest size. In control territories, females decreased their egg size in response to a larger nest, whereas a tendency for the opposite relationship was revealed in food-supplemented territories. We discuss the possibility that magpie females adopt different strategies for reproductive investment according to food availability.  相似文献

In a population of moorhens (Gallinula chloropus), at least27% of netting females laid one or more eggs in a neighbor'snest Females laid parasitically under three conditions: 56%of parasitic eggs were from nesting females that preceded layinga dutch in their own nest by a parasitic laying bout, 19% werefrom females whose nests were depredated before clutch completionand that laid the following egg parasiticaDy, and 25% were froma small number of females without territories, "non-nesting"parasites, that each laid a series of parasitic eggs. Clutchsizes varied greatly between females, but nesting females eachlaid a consistent clutch size both within and between seasonsfor a given mate and territory. Nesting females that employeda dual strategy of brood parasitism and parental care producedextra eggs that they laid in the nests of neighbors before layinga dutch in their own nests. Two out of ten females whose dutchesI experimentally removed during the laying period were successfullyinduced to lay their next egg in the nest of a neighbor. Nestingfemales that laid parasitically selected their hosts opportunisticallyfrom among the nests dosest to their territories. An experimentin which parasitic eggs were removed and hosts left to rearonly their own young showed that parasites did not choose hoststhat were better parents than pairs with contemporary neststhat were not parasitized. Females that only laid parasiticaDywithin a given season timed their parasitic laying bouts poorlyand achieved no reproductive success. Parasitic young rarelyfledged, and the mean seasonal reproductive success of nestingbrood parasites did not differ from that of nonparasitic females. However, the variance in reproductive success of nesting broodparasites was significantly higher than that of nonparasiticfemales.  相似文献

Successful hatching of large numbers of artificially incubated eggs from the green iguana, Iguana iguana, are reported. Gravid females were captured at a nesting site in Summit Gardens, Soberania, Parque Nacional, Panama, and released into an enclosure with an artificial nesting area. Females dug their own tunnels and nest chambers or used artificial nest chambers for egg deposition. Eggs (n = 829) from 21 clutches were removed from the nests and artificially incubated. Average hatching success per clutch was 94.6% and the mean clutch incubation time was 92.1 days. A distinct odor was noticed in the incubation containers several days before the eggs began to hatch. At this time, the substrate layer was removed exposing the top surface of all eggs, and the eggs desiccated to some degree prior to hatching. High incubation temperature, hydric conditions, and egg arrangement are all implicated as contributing factors in low hatching success in previous studies using artificial incubation techniques.  相似文献

Avian brood parasites, including cuckoos and cowbirds, have multiple negative effects on their hosts. We analysed the effects of Shiny Cowbird Molothrus bonariensis parasitism on different components (e.g. egg losses, hatching success, chick survival and nest abandonment) of House Wren Troglodytes aedon reproductive success. We also conducted an experiment to discriminate between two mechanisms that may reduce hatching success in parasitized clutches: lower efficiency of incubation due to the increase in clutch volume and disruption of host incubation by the early hatching of Cowbirds. Egg puncturing by Shiny Cowbirds reduced host clutch size at hatching by 10–20%, and parasitized nests had a decrease in hatching success of 40–80%. Egg losses and hatching failures were positively associated with the intensity of parasitism. Brood reduction was greater in parasitized nests, but the growth rate of the chicks that fledged was similar to that in unparasitized nests. The combined effects of egg losses, hatching failures and brood reduction decreased the number of fledged chicks by 80%. In addition, egg puncturing increased the likelihood of nest abandonment by Wrens. Experimental data showed that hatching failures occurred when there was a combination of: (1) an increase in the volume of the clutch by the addition of the Cowbird egg without removal of host eggs, and (2) the addition of the Cowbird egg before the onset of incubation. This was relatively common in House Wren nests, as Cowbirds generally parasitize before the onset of incubation. Our results indicate that Shiny Cowbird parasitism imposes a major impact on House Wrens, as it affects all components of the Wren's reproductive success.  相似文献

The breeding biology of the Pacific Swallow was studied in Malaysia. Time-budgets and preliminary energy-budgets were calculated for different stages of the breeding cycle. Breeding was seasonal, the first eggs were laid in the first week of March from 1978 to 1982. The nest was a mud cup built under an overhang, often on man-made structures over water. The mean clutch size was 2.98 eggs. So more than two successful clutches were ever raised, although up to four sets of eggs can be laid if clutches are lost. The incubation period was 16.2 days and the nestling period 19–21 days. Nestling weights showed the typical hirundine recession before fledging. The mean brood size was 2.32 and there was no evidence of undernourishment in larger broods. Nesting success was lower than for temperate hirundines but high for a tropical passerine. Incubation duties were carried out by the female alone but both parents fed the brood. The male never delivered more than 44% of the total feeds. Daily energy expenditure varied from 3.44–4.9×BMR depending upon the stage of the breeding cycle.  相似文献

Lack ( 1967 ) proposed that clutch size in species with precocial young was determined by nutrients available to females at the time of egg formation; since then others have suggested that regulation of clutch size in these species may be more complex. We tested whether incubation limitation contributes to ultimate constraints on maximal clutch size in Black Brent Geese (Black Brant) Branta bernicla nigricans. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between clutch size and duration of the nesting period (i.e. days between nest initiation and the first pipped egg) and the number of goslings leaving the nest. We used experimental clutch manipulations to assess these questions because they allowed us to create clutches that were larger than the typical maximum of five eggs in this species. We found that the per‐capita probability of egg success (i.e. the probability an egg hatched and the gosling left the nest) declined from 0.81 for two‐egg clutches to 0.50 for seven‐egg clutches. As a result of declining egg success, clutches containing more than five eggs produced, at best, only marginally more offspring. Manipulating clutch size at the beginning of incubation had no effect on the duration of the nesting period, but the nesting period increased with the number of eggs a female laid naturally prior to manipulation, from 25.4 days (95% CI 25.1–25.7) for three‐egg clutches to 27.7 days (95% CI 27.3–28.1) for six‐egg clutches. This delay in hatching may result in reduced gosling growth rates due to declining forage quality during the brood rearing period. Our results suggest that the strong right truncation of Brent clutches, which results in few clutches greater than five, is partially explained by the declining incubation capacity of females as clutch size increases and a delay in hatching with each additional egg laid. As a result, females laying clutches with more than five eggs would typically gain little fitness benefit above that associated with a five‐egg clutch.  相似文献

Annual and seasonal variation in reproductive timing and performance were studied in a population of the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor over 10 years in southern Sweden. The median laying date of the first egg varied by up to 17 days between years, being generally larger than the variation of laying dates within years. Neither clutch size, brood size in successful nests, fledging success in successful nests nor mean nestling weight differed significantly between years. There was no trend for mean clutch size to vary between early and late years. In spite of a more than threefold variation in population size, no reproductive variable demonstrated an apparent density-dependence. Within the season, clutch size declined steeply with increasing clutch initiation date, whereas fledging success and nesting success did not, leading to a trend in brood size almost identical to the trend in clutch size. The survival prospects of fledged young declined with increasing clutch initiation date, and it is argued that the clutch size laid is a strategic adjustment to laying date. Out of 124 breeding attempts, 34% did not produce fledged young. In 9% of the breeding attempts, pairs laid no eggs. At least 20% of the breeding attempts failed after egg-laying. The most common cause of breeding failure was loss of the breeding partner followed by nest abandonment (40% of the failures). Only 16–28% of the failures were due to predation on the nest. Most complete failures, and also partial losses from nests, occurred at the early breeding stages. It is argued that the early nestling phase may be a critical stage, which the woodpeckers adjust to coincide with the seasonal food peak, explaining the strikingly late breeding season compared with other non-migrant species.  相似文献

Several groups of vertebrate taxa, including shorebirds, are unusual in that they produce a fixed number of offspring. The aim of this study was to examine whether the incubation capacity of western sandpipers (Calidris mauri) and semipalmated sandpipers (C. pusilla) limits their maximum clutch size to four eggs. Experimental enlargement of clutch size had no effect on rates of nest abandonment, nest attendance or loss of body mass by incubating sandpipers. The duration of incubation was significantly longer for enlarged five-egg nests, and there were trends towards increased partial clutch loss and asynchrony at hatch, but overall hatching success was unaffected by experimental egg number. I conclude that small, calidrine sandpipers with biparental care are able to compensate for an additional egg in an enlarged nestbowl, despite the constraints of conically shaped eggs and two brood patches. Possibly, shorebirds do not lay more than a fixed clutch size of four eggs because selection on factors acting during egg production or brood-rearing is more important in regulating offspring number. Herring Gull Larus argentatus eggs from a study colony in the Baltic showed a slight but significant variation in egg size within the laying sequence. Last-laid eggs were only about 5% smaller by volume than first eggs. There was no significant difference in dry yolk weight or dry albumen weight, although possible differences were evident. The chicks had nearly equal hatching weights and equally long tarsi. There was no differential mortality in the third chick in the study colony, and there were no indications of egg-size-mediated mortality. The birds in the colony produced an average of 1.45 fledglings per pair. Compared with several other studied colonies, the difference in egg size within a clutch was low, and a comparison of colonies from northwestern Europe suggests that variance within the clutch is negatively correlated with fledging success, so that a large difference in size between first and last eggs is associated with low fledging success. We suggest that the size of the last egg in the clutch reflects the feeding potential in the environment and is mainly a nonadaptive response to poor feeding conditions during laying.  相似文献

We studied intraspecific nest parasitism in the grey starling (Sturnus cineraceus) in 1992 and 1993. We used three criteria to detect nest parasitism: (i) the appearance of more than one egg per day while the host was laying; (ii) the appearance of extra eggs after the host completed its clutch; and (iii) the appearance of eggs which were of a different shape, size and color to other eggs in the clutch. There were 290 nests (157 nests in 1992; 133 nests in 1993) in which the clutch was completed early (clutches initiated before May 10). Twenty-nine (1992) and 32 (1993) nests contained at least one parasitic egg. Parasitic eggs hatched if they were laid during the laying period and early in the incubation period of their host, and a few of them fledged. Fledging success of parasitic eggs was not different from that of eggs in non-parasitized nests if parasitic eggs were laid during the host's laying period. However, fledging success of all parasitic eggs was fewer than that of eggs in non-parasitized nests. By comparison, fledging success of parasitized nests was not a great as that of non-parasitized nests.  相似文献

Several hypotheses have been raised to explain the upper limit of clutch size at four eggs in waders (suborder Charadrii), which may play an important role in the evolution of the variety of mating and parental care systems in this group. Experimental tests of the hypotheses have produced conflicting results. It was recently suggested that the combined effects of several incubation costs of a larger clutch suffice to limit its size to four eggs in this group. Here we test the incubation-limitation hypothesis in a field experiment, in redshank Tringa totanus. We created five-egg clutches by adding one egg from another nest to a just completed four-egg clutch. Four-egg control clutches were created by replacing one of the eggs by an egg from another nest. All egg removals, additions and replacements were done before incubation started. Incubation time in five-egg clutches increased by 1 day to 24.3ǂ.23 days, compared to 23.3ǂ.32 days in four-egg clutches. Egg hatchability and nest predation rates did not differ significantly between treatments. On average five-egg clutches produced one extra chick at hatching (4.5ǂ.26 chicks) compared to four-egg clutches (3.5ǂ.27 chicks). Also when several additional costs from incubating enlarged clutches are added, redshanks by laying a fifth egg would on average increase their reproductive success at hatching by an estimated 22%. The incubation-limitation hypothesis therefore is clearly rejected in this species. Possible mechanisms behind the four-egg clutch limit in waders and ways of testing the alternatives are discussed.  相似文献

The breeding biology of the Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus , a vulnerable bird species in the Palaearctic, has been studied for 7 years at Lake Mikri Prespa, a continental wetland and Tsoukalio lagoon, a coastal wetland within the Amvrakikos Gulf. The two colonies showed stability, with fluctuations in the number of breeding attempts each year varying by about 30% over a period of 7 years. The date of arrival at the breeding sites and the date of laying of the first egg varied between mid-February and mid-March. The egglaying period (including renesting) varied between 18 and 114 days between years. The annual average clutch size varied between 1.60 and 1.94 eggs per nest. The incubation period averaged 31.4 ± 1.4 days. The overall hatching success varied from 36% to 70%. Egg losses were mainly due to nest abandonment, infertile eggs and eggs rolled from the nests. The Dalmatian Pelican chicks took 11–12 weeks to fledge. Nestling mortality was very low in contrast to other species of pelican. Such a low nestling mortality explains why the breeding success each year is largely explained by the hatching success.  相似文献

Oatley, T. B. 1982. The Starred Robin in Natal, Part 3: Breeding, populations and plumages. Ostrich 53: 206–221 The female Starred Robin Pogonocichla stellata constructs a domed nest of moss and dead leaves usually on sloping ground and well concealed in the herb layer. The normal clutch is three eggs laid on consecutive days. Incubation usually starts with the laying of the third egg. The mean size of 138 eggs was 22 x 16 mm. The female incubates the eggs for 16 to 18 days and intermittently broods the young for the fist five of the average 14-day nestling period. Both sexes feed the young from the time of hatching and parental care lasts for some 42 days after leaving the nest. Eggs are laid from October to December with 63% of clutches started in November. Data on sex ratios indicate a surplus of adult males in the population and annual survival rates are estimated at 0,84 for males and 0,76 for females. 51% of eggs laid in 60 nests give rise to fledged young. About 21.3% of eggs laid produce adults. The level of brood parasitism by cuckoos is relatively low. Most adult mortality occurs outside of the breeding seasons. Chilling and overnight starvation from January to March when incidence of late afternoon thunderstorms is highMaycause significant mortality. The subadult plumage appears to confer crypsis and enable the immature bird to reside in adult territories without harassment. AdultsMaybenefit through an effective reduction in competitive stress.  相似文献
