The alkaline buffering capacity of humic substances in persistent organic materials such as peats has been utilized for remediation of alkaline soils. The purposes of the present study were to reveal the mechanism of alkaline buffering and to quantify the alkaline buffering capacity of humic substances contained in three peat samples obtained from Hokkaido, Canada, and Sri Lanka. Acidic functional groups in humic acid and fulvic acid extracted from the three natural peats were quantified by alkalimetric titration and pK distribution analyses of the titration curves. The results indicate that the inherent degree of humification of the organic matter can be identified from the pK distribution, which showed that the humic substances in peats contained diprotic acids. The present study also showed that the ratios of amounts of deprotonation to organic carbon content, as well as the organic carbon content, were needed for quantification of the pH buffering capacity. Moreover, the study showed that the composition of the peat from Sri Lanka was different from those of other peats and that it is a effective organic material for buffering under alkaline conditions.  相似文献

Abstract. The population dynamics and reproductive strategies of two rare wet heathland species, Gentiana pneumonanthe and Rhynchospora, were studied in experimental permanent plots in a wet heathland near Bremen, NW Germany, to assess how effective sod cutting and mowing are in promoting these species. In one experiment, small plots (0.25 m2 - 4 m2) were sod-cut or mown; in the second, one large plot 30 mx 50m) was sod-cut. The development of the vegetation and the number of shoots of the two target species were recorded annually. Sod cutting lead to the highest shoot numbers of Gentiana in the long run, whilst mowing was more effective at the beginning of the experiment. Seedlings and adult shoots slowly became more and more abundant after sod cutting. In contrast, Rhynchospora soon formed closed stands after sod-cutting, first through seed germination and then through fast clonal growth of the established individuals. Moist soil or short inundations promoted the germination and seedling establishment of Gentiana, whereas drought negatively affected seedling recruitment. Long periods of inundation severely reduced the population at first, but high numbers of seedlings were found in the following growing season. For the disturbance-dependent Gentiana and Rhynchospora, the availability of gaps within the vegetation is of crucial importance. To promote existing populations, we suggest small-scale sod cuttings which create gaps without disturbing existing flowering individuals too much. For degenerated stands of wet heathland we recommend large-scale sod cutting to activate the seed bank. Additionally, seed introduction may be helpful to encourage the development of a wet heathland with characteristic floristic composition.  相似文献

  • Most aluminium (Al)‐accumulating species are found on soils with high Al saturation and low Ca availability (Ca poor). Callisthene fasciculata Mart. (Vochysiaceae), however, is an Al‐accumulating tree restricted to Ca‐rich soils with low Al saturation in the Brazilian Cerrado savanna. Here we tested its calcicole behaviour, and the possible role of organic acids in detoxification of Al during the early stages of plant development.
  • We assessed growth, dry mass, nutrients, Al and organic acids in seedlings grown for 50 days on two contrasting Cerrado soils; one with high Ca concentrations and low Al saturation and the other with low Ca availability and high Al saturation.
  • Relative to plants on Ca‐rich soil, plants on Ca‐poor soil had necrotic spots and bronzing of leaves. Roots and shoots contained reduced concentrations of P and Cu, but higher concentrations of Fe, Al and citrate. Despite lower concentrations in the soil, Ca and Mg increased in shoots. Shoot concentrations of oxalate were also higher.
  • We confirmed C. fasciculata as an Al‐accumulating species with calcicole behaviour. The increased concentrations of organic acids in plants with higher Al accumulation suggest that high availability of soluble Al does not prevent occurrence of this species on soils with high Al saturation. Instead, the absence of C. fasciculata from Ca‐poor soils is probably due to imbalances in tissue Fe, Cu and Zn imposed by this soil type.

Considerable knowledge exists about the effect of aluminium (Al) on root vitality, but whether elevated levels of Al affect soil microorganisms is largely unknown. We thus compared soils from Al-treated and control plots of a field experiment with respect to microbial and chemical parameters, as well as root growth and vitality. The field experiment was established in a 50-year-old Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) stand where no Al or low concentrations of Al had been added every 7–10 days during the growth season for 7 years. Analysis of soil solutions collected using zero tension lysimeters and porous suction cups showed that Al treatment lead to increased concentrations of Al, Ca and Mg and lower pH and [Ca + Mg + K/Al] molar ratio. Corresponding soil analyses showed that soil pH remained unaffected (pH 3.8), that exchangeable Al increased, while exchangeable Ca and Mg decreased due to the Al treatment. Root in-growth into cores placed in the upper 20 cm of the soil during three growth seasons was not affected by Al additions, neither was nutrient concentration or mortality of these roots. The biomass of some taxonomic groups of soil microorganisms, analyzed using specific membrane components (phospholipid fatty acids; PLFAs), was clearly affected by the imposed Al treatment, both in the organic soil horizon and in the underlying mineral soil. Microbial community structure in both horizons was also clearly modified by the Al treatment. Shifts in PLFA trans/cis ratios indicative of short term physiological stress were not observed. Yet, aluminium stress was indicated both by changes in community structure and in ratios of single PLFAs for treated/untreated plots. Thus, soil microorganisms were more sensitive indicators of subtle chemical changes in soil than chemical composition and vitality of roots.  相似文献

Microcyst Germination in Myxococcus xanthus   总被引:10,自引:9,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
Germination of glycerol-prepared microcysts of Myxococcus xanthus was studied. The sequence of morphological events during germination resembled that of germinating fruiting body-microcysts. The turbidity drop of a culture of germinating microcysts could be described by McCormick's formula derived for germinating Bacillus spores. The rate of uptake of labeled glycine and acetate did not change during germination. Temperature, aeration, and pH optima for germination were the same as for vegetative cell growth. Germination was induced by protein hydrolysates and the individual amino acids glycine, alanine, valine, aspartic acid, and glutamic acid. A number of organic compounds, including sugars, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, organic acids, and chelating agents, did not induce germination. The inorganic ions HPO(4) (2-), Mg(++), Ca(++), and NH(4) (+) induced germination, although ionic strength was not a factor. Microcysts incubated in distilled water at concentrations greater than about 10(9) cells/ml germinated; supernatant fluid from such suspensions (germination factor) induced germination of less concentrated suspensions. The activity of germination factor was resistant to boiling, but was lost on charring and dialysis. Germination of microcysts and growth of vegetative cells was equally sensitive to a variety of metabolic inhibitors, including penicillin and chloramphenicol. Germination was more resistant than vegetative growth to inhibition by antibiotics of the streptomycin family and by actinomycin D.  相似文献

A good understanding of the relationship between plant establishment and the ecosystem of which they are part of is needed to conserve rare plant species. Introduction experiments offer a direct test of recruitment limitation, but generally only the seed germination and seedling phases are monitored. Thus the relative importance of different establishment stages in the process of recruitment is not considered. This is particularly true for parasitic plants where empirical data are generally missing. During two consecutive growing seasons we examined the effect of heathland management applications, degree of heathland succession (pioneer, building and mature phase) and seed-density on the recruitment and establishment of the endangered holoparasite Cuscuta epithymum. In general, recruitment after two growing seasons was low with 4.79% of the sown seeds that successfully emerged to the seedling stage and a final establishment of 89 flowering adults (i.e. <1.5% of the sown seeds). Although a higher seed-density resulted in a higher number of seedlings, seed-density did not significantly affected relative germination percentages. The management type and subsequent heath succession had no significant effect on seedling emergence; whereas, seedling attachment to the host, establishment and growth to full-grown size were hampered in older heath vegetation (i.e. high, dense, and mature canopy). Establishment was most successful in turf-cut pioneer heathland, characterised by a relatively open and low vegetation of young Calluna vulgaris. The age of C. vulgaris, C. epithymum's main host, proved to be the most limiting factor. These results emphasise the importance of site quality (i.e. successional phase of its host) on recruitment success of C. epithymum, which is directly affected by the management applied to the vegetation. Lack of any heathland management will thus seriously restrict establishment of the endangered parasite.  相似文献

The longterm effect of acid irrigation and liming (dolomitic limestone) on the mineral element content of roots of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) was investigated in an 80-year-old Norway spruce stand in South Germany (Bavaria). Soil cores of four soil depths (humic layer, 0–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm) were taken over 2 years (August 1991 and August 1992) from six plots with different treatments (control, normal irrigation, acid irrigation solely or in combination with liming) and living short roots selected and analysed for calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn) and aluminium (Al).On the acid irrigated plot, the Ca and Mg contents of roots were decreased in 1991, but by 1992, 2 years after the irrigation had been terminated, no difference could be found. The Al content of the roots was not increased by acid irrigation but rose with increasing soil depth, regardless of treatment. Liming increased root contents of Ca and Mg and reduced contents of Mn and Al. This effect was especially distinct in the humic layer and decreased with increasing soil depth. Even though the molar Ca/Al-ratio in the roots in the mineral soil was generally low (0.09–0.52), no evidence of Al toxicity could be found. The formation of Al complexes is discussed as a reason for this behaviour.  相似文献

Lepidium vesicarium is a weed species with a wide distribution in the rangelands and dry‐land farming in East Azarbaijan, Iran. The experiments were undertaken to assay the effects of light, temperature, pH, osmotic potential, NaCl concentration and burial depth on seed germination and emergence of L. vesicarium. Germination was maintained at high levels (> 80%) over a wide day/night temperature range (10/5 to 30/20°C), but a severe reduction in the germination rate of L. vesicarium was found below 20/10°C. Germination of L. vesicarium was influenced by different light/dark regimes, as the germination rate was highest at 16 h light for the all treatments (0, 8, 12, 16 and 24 h light). Germination was 92–95% over a wide range of pH (2‐10). Germination was >50% at a water potential of ?0.7 MPa and salinity of 21 dS/m, indicating that drought and salt conditions have a minimal impact on seed germination. With increasing burial depth from 0 to 2 cm, the number of days required for 50% emergence increased and no germination was observed at burial depths deeper than 3 cm. This suggests that L. vesicarium would become troublesome in the rangelands and for growers in reduced‐tillage cropping systems. The ability to emerge from shallow depths, coupled with tolerance of a wide pH range, drought and salinity at germination, should be taken into account when managing this weed species.  相似文献

During the last decades, the perennial tussock grass Molinia caerulea has shown an increased abundance in European heathlands, most likely as a result of increased nitrogen deposition and altered management schemes. Because of its deciduous nature, Molinia produces large amounts of litter each year, which may affect the intensity and frequency of accidental fires in heathlands. These fires may influence plant population dynamics and heathland community organization through their effects on plant vital attributes and competitive interactions. In this study, fire-induced changes in competitive ability and invasiveness of Molinia through changes in biomass production, seed set and seed germination under both natural and laboratory conditions were investigated. We found that fire significantly increased aboveground biomass, seed set and germination of Molinia. Seed set was twice as high in burned compared to unburned heathland. Two years after fire, seedling densities in natural conditions were on average six times higher in burned than in unburned heathland, which resulted in increased abundance of Molinia after burning. The seed germination experiment indicated that seeds harvested from plants in burned heathland showed higher germination rates than those from unburned heathland. Hence, our results clearly demonstrate increased invasive spread of Molinia after large and intense fires. Active management guidelines are required to prevent further encroachment of Molinia and to lower the probability of large fires altering the heathland community in the future.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was carried out to determine whether the decline of Arnica montana L. in heathland vegetation in the Netherlands could be caused by a detrimental effect of soil acidification on vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza of this species. Arnica montana and two non-declining species from the same habitat, Hieracium pilosella L. and Deschampsia flexuosa (L.) Trin., were grown with and without the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungus Glomus fasciculatum (Thaxter sensu Gerdemann) Gerd. and Trappe in pots with an extremely nutrient-poor, sandy soil. They were percolated weekly with nutrient solution with different pH values, viz. 5.5, 4.5, 3.5 and 2.5. At intervals of three weeks and up to 12 weeks, measurements were made on growth, nutrient uptake and VAM infection. In the most acid treatments growth and nutrient uptake were reduced in all species. VAM infection decreased only slightly with decreasing pH of the treatments. Without VAM, Arnica montana died and Hieracium pilosella hardly grew at the most acid treatments. Therefore it is concluded that VAM decreased the stress caused by the most acid treatments. Leachate from the most acid treatment had a pH of approximately 4, and contained considerable amounts of aluminium, dissolved from the solid phase of the soil. This might have played a role in the detrimental effects on the plants in the case of the most acid treatment. No evidence was found in this experiment that the decline of Arnica montana was due to detrimental effects of soil acidification on VAM of this species.  相似文献

The role of amino acids as triggers of Mucor racemosus sporangiospore germination was investigated. No single amino acid was effective as glucose or peptone at triggering germination. Germination induced by glucose or peptone was pH-independent, whereas germination induced by glutamate was pH-dependent. The composition of the free amino acid pools of M-spores (those unable to germinate on glutamate) was qualitatively and quantitatively similar to that of C-spores (those capable of germinating on glutamate) with the exceptions of hydroxyproline and methionine and methionine whose concentrations were several-fold higher in C-spores. Glutamate and leucine were taken up by germinating and nongerminating spores; however, significant protein synthesis occurred only in germinating spores. Spores not triggered by 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (M-spores) contained about one-half the protein of those triggered by 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (C-spores). C-spores initiated to germinate by 3-O-methyl-D-glucose decreased in total organic carbon and protein over a 6 h period; removal of the 3-O-methyl-D-glucose resulted in an immediate halt of protein degradation and spore swelling. These results suggest that protein is a major endogenous reserve in M. racemosus sporangiospores and that its turnover is a necessary event for glucose-triggered germination.  相似文献

Soil born fungi such as Phytium ultimum, Fusarium ssp., and Rhizoctonia solani (Kühn) severely restrict stand establishment of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) on acid soils of the Tropics. Calcium application is known to alleviate fungal infection in many legumes but the causes are still unclear. To investigate environmental factors and physiological mechanisms involved, growth chamber experiments were conducted with an acid sandy soil from Mexico. Treatments were soil liming at a rate of 0.67 g Ca(OH)2 kg-1, gypsum application at 0.49 g CaSO4 2H2O kg-1 soil placed around the seed, and an untreated control. Beans were grown under three temperature regimes with constant night and one constant day vs. two sinusoidal day temperatures. To examine patterns of seed and seedling exudation at regular intervals leachates of germinating seeds were collected on filter paper soaked with equilibrium solutions from soils of the three treatments. The severity of root rot in the control treatment was highest when plants were stressed by temperature extremes. At a sinusoidal day temperature peaking at 40°C soil liming and gypsum application to the seed increased the number of healthy seedlings similarly by over 60%. However, only liming which effectively eliminated growth constraints by low pH and high aluminum concentrations led to an increase in hypocotyl elongation by 22% and in total root length by 8%. Both calcium amendments increased the calcium and potassium contents in the hypocotyl tissue. From seeds exposed to the equilibrium solution of unlimed soil with pH 3.7, 1 mM Ca, and 0.6 mM Al considerable amounts of amino acids and carbohydrates were leached. In contrast, exposure to the equilibrium solution from limed soil with pH 4.3, 3 mM Ca, and negligible concentrations of Al led to a net uptake of amino acids and decreased leaching of carbohydrates. Exposure to the equilibrium solution of the gypsum treatment with pH 3.6, 20 mM Ca, and 1.2 mM Al resulted in a somewhat smaller net uptake of amino acids compared to liming. During germination pH around the seeds steeply increased in the untreated control but significantly less with both amendments. The results indicate that pH and the Ca/Al ratio in the soil solution around bean seeds determine their pattern of exudation and solute uptake. For bean germination and early growth on acid soils locally placed application of small amounts of gypsum as seed pelleting seems as effective as soil liming in reducing the incidence of root rot. The results indicate that this may be accomplished by decreasing the amount of leachates available for fungal development.  相似文献

Summary The effects of a number of organic compounds on the germination of spores of Agaricus bisporus (J. Lange) Pilat has been investigated and a preliminary analysis of spore lipids carried out. Germination was stimulated by isocaproic acid but not by straight-chain C5 to C11 fatty acids or by the amino acids leucine and iso-leucine. Cholesterol at a concentration of 1 ppm was inhibitory. The lipid reserve of the spore comprised mono-, di- and tri-glycerides, free fatty acids and sterols. The phospholipid fraction was unusually small and contained a lecithin and cephalin fraction, phosphatidylinositol and cardiolipin phosphatidic acid; phosphatidylcholine being the most prominent component. The role of lipids and various germination stimulants in the physiology of A. bisporus spores is discussed.  相似文献

The fire avoidance hypothesis proposes that a benefit of seed dispersal by ants (myrmecochory) is to protect seeds from being killed during fire and to facilitate post‐fire germination of seeds that require heat shock to break their physical dormancy. The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of fire and seed burial by a predominant seed‐dispersing ant, Rhytidoponera metallica (subfamily: Ectatomminae) on germination levels of three ant‐dispersed legume species (Pultenaea daphnoides, Acacia myrtifolia and Acacia pycnantha). Experimental burial of seeds within aluminium cans at a site prior to being burnt and at an adjacent unburnt site showed that fire increased germination levels, particularly for seeds buried at 1‐ and 2‐cm deep and that overall, germination levels differed among the three plant species. To quantify seed burial depths and post‐fire germination levels facilitated by R. metallica ants, seeds were fed to colonies prior to fire at the burnt and unburnt sites. Of the seeds buried within nests that were recovered, between 45% and 75% occurred within the upper 6 cm of the soil profile, although unexpectedly, greater percentages of seeds were recovered from the upper 0–2 cm of nests in the unburnt site compared with nests in the burnt site. Germination levels of buried seeds associated with R. metallica nests ranged from 21.2% to 29.5% in the burnt site compared with 3.1–14.8% in the unburnt site. While increased seed germination levels were associated with R. metallica nests following fire, most seeds were buried at depths below those where optimal temperatures for breaking seed dormancy occurred during the fire. We suggest that R. metallica ants may provide fire avoidance benefits to myrmecochorous seeds by burying them at a range of depths within a potential germination zone defined by intra‐ and inter‐fire variation in levels of soil heating.  相似文献

Fire, which is the dominant disturbance in the boreal forest, creates substantial heterogeneity in soil burn severity at patch and landscape scales. We present results from five field experiments in Yukon Territory, Canada, and Alaska, USA that document the effects of soil burn severity on the germination and establishment of four common boreal trees: Picea glauca, Picea mariana, Pinus contorta subsp. latifolia, and Populus tremuloides. Burn severity had strong positive effects on seed germination and net seedling establishment after 3 years. Growth of transplanted seedlings was also significantly higher on severely burned soils. Our data and a synthesis of the literature indicated a consistent, steep decline in conifer establishment on organic soils at depths greater than 2.5 cm. A meta-analysis of seedling responses found no difference in the magnitude of severity effects on germination versus net establishment. There were, however, significant differences in establishment but not germination responses among deciduous trees, spruce, and pine, suggesting that small-seeded species experience greater mortality on lightly burned, organic soils than large-seeded species. Together, our analyses indicate that variations in burn severity can influence multiple aspects of forest stand structure, by affecting the density and composition of tree seedlings that establish after fire. These effects are predicted to be most important in moderately-drained forest stands, where a high potential variability in soil burn severity is coupled with strong severity effects on tree recruitment.  相似文献

Aluminium tolerance in plants and the complexing role of organic acids   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The aluminium cation Al(3+) is toxic to many plants at micromolar concentrations. A range of plant species has evolved mechanisms that enable them to grow on acid soils where toxic concentrations of Al(3+) can limit plant growth. Organic acids play a central role in these aluminium tolerance mechanisms. Some plants detoxify aluminium in the rhizosphere by releasing organic acids that chelate aluminium. In at least two species, wheat and maize, the transport of organic acid anions out of the root cells is mediated by aluminium-activated anion channels in the plasma membrane. Other plants, including species that accumulate aluminium in their leaves, detoxify aluminium internally by forming complexes with organic acids.  相似文献

Germination, seedling establishment and growth of calcifuge plants in Swedish limestone soils of Archean and Ordovician age were studied. As previously demonstrated for Viscaria vulgaris, establishment of Rumex acetosella and Silene rupestris did not succeed unless CaHPO4 (at the rate of 10 mmol dm-3 of soil) was supplied. Growth of Deschampsia flexuosa was enhanced by phosphate addition, whereas establishment success of Jasione montana was poor, regardless of phosphate treatment. Establishment and growth in an acidic gneiss soil, used as a reference for the species studied, was good. Total, total inorganic, exchangeable, and soil solution P were considered in all soils and treatments. It is proposed that the calcifuge behaviour of plants is quite often caused by inability to solubilize the native phosphate of limestone soils.  相似文献

Organic acids including humic, fulvic, aliphatic and aromatic acids comprise part of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) present in soil solution. They act as ligands for trace metals and are effective detoxifiers of monomeric aluminium (Al). Solid phase extraction (SPE) techniques permit fractionation of the DOC into organic classes but yield no information on the pre-existing Al/organic acid complexes. Aliphatic and aromatic acids may be separated and determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC); however, the conditions used dissociate the organic acid Al complexes. Humic and fulvic acids are of a variable and ill-defined nature and only limited information exists regarding their binding of Al. This paper reports on fractionation studies of soil solutions, using both SPE and molecular weight cut-off filters, to characterise the DOC components and on the subsequent development of a size exclusion chromatography (SEC) system for the separation of organically complexed Al into different species using a low ionic strength mobile phase at pH 4.2. Model complexes of Al and Cu citrate were used to evaluate chromatographic performance of a Fractogel TSK HW-40(S) column (1×30 cm). For soil solution samples, the column eluate, after passing through a UV detector, was directly coupled to an Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICPAES) for on-line multi-element detection to characterise DOC and trace metal distribution.Fractionation studies revealed that polysaccharides constituted the major proportion of the DOC which passed the 10000 dalton molecular weight cut-off filter. Analysis of soil solutions from an organically amended soil by the SEC-ICPAES system showed that Al, Fe and Mn eluted as multiple peaks prior to the bed volume, indicating their presence as complexes with organic ligands.  相似文献

As aluminium (Al) severely inhibits magnesium (Mg) uptake by many plant species, Mg uptake and Mg-Al interactions in maize (Zea mays L.) were studied in a series of short and long-term experiments. A relationship between Mg uptake and the degree of Mg saturation of exchange or binding sites of the root apoplast (root-CEC) was studied by growing plants in solutions containing: (i) different concentrations of Al, calcium (Ca) and hydrogen (H) ions; and (ii) a number of organic complexes of Al. In short-term experiments, Ca had little effect on the Mg nutrition of maize plants. However, with increasing concentrations of Al and H ions in nutrient solution, there was a decrease in both the degree of Mg saturation of root-CEC and Mg uptake. Effects of pH on cation (H, Al, Mg, Ca) binding at the root apoplasm were pronounced and complicated because of a simultaneous change of H ion concentration, effective root-CEC and Al speciation. The behaviour of Al as organic Al complexes differed from that supplied as aluminium chloride (AlCl3). In the presence of organo-Al complexes, less Mg was replaced from apoplastic binding sites and Mg uptake was inhibited less severely than with AlCl3. In a long-term experiment, Al-citrate, in contrast with AlCl3, was not phytotoxic to maize, expressed by the lack of any inhibition of shoot biomass production.  相似文献

We investigated the concentrations of particulate Al, Si, P, S, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, and Fe at various areas of Lake Biwa, such as the limnetic zone in the northern basin, the offshore zone, the dredged area and Akanoi Bay in the southern basin, and reed community areas in the shore. In the wide and deep northern basin, the density of suspended solids was low, and substantial fractions of particulate Si, P, S, and Ca were biogenic matter produced by phytoplankton. In the offshore zone in the narrow and shallow southern basin, the concentration ratios of particulate Si, K, Ca, Ti, and Fe against particulate Al were almost constant throughout the year and were similar to those found in crusts. Therefore, these elements are most likely derived from terrigenous clay matter. In the dredged area where the hypolimnion became anoxic during the stratification period, the concentrations of particulate Fe, Mn, P, S, and Ca increased because of the formation of hydrous Fe and Mn oxides and Fe sulfide. In Akanoi Bay, the ratios of Mn/Al and Fe/Al were high because of the stirring of sediments enriched with Mn and Fe oxides. In the reed community areas, the concentration of suspended solids correlated well with particulate Fe and P, but not with Al or chlorophyll a; therefore these areas seem to be rich in humic organic matter enriched with P and Fe due to microbial activity. Thus, the elemental composition of suspended solids reflects the chemical, biological, and physical processes in the lake and gives us useful indices of the characteristics of the water.
