The objective of this study was to compare levels of four elements (zinc, copper, selenium, and iron) in the serum and tissue
of 68 breast tumor patients (benign and malignant), from a teaching hospital in central Taiwan. Samples of normal tissue (5
cm away from tumor) were also taken from patients with malignant tumors. Only serum was taken from the 25 healthy persons
in the control group. Results showed that Zn, Cu, Se, Fe, Cu/Zn, Cu/Se, and Cu/Fe were present in different amounts in the
serum of each of the three groups. Zn and Se levels were lower in the serum of the two tumor groups compared to the control
group. In tissue samples, Zn, Cu, Se, and Fe concentrations were different in each of the three groups. The malignant tissue
had the highest levels of all four elements. In advanced-stage malignant tumors, levels of Cu and the ratios of Cu/Fe and
Cu/Zn (in both serum and tissue) were highest. The ratios of serum Cu/Zn, Cu/Fe, and Cu/Se were also higher in malignant patients.
The cutoff value of serum Cu/Zn was 1.2 (sensitivity and specificity were both 100%). The Cu/Zn ratio was highest in the advanced
stages of cancer and was a better diagnostic tool for breast cancer than Cu/Se and Cu/Fe. The authors suggest that change
of trace elements in serum and tissue might be useful and significant as biomarkers involving the initial plastic process. 相似文献

Varicocele has been associated with decrease in seminal parameters. Selenium (Se), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) are trace elements
essential for normal spermatogenesis of mammals and play a critical role as antioxidant defense system enzymes. Se, Cu, and
Zn are associated with sperm quality in fertile and infertile men. However, there is little information about Se, Cu, and
Zn concentrations in semen in patients with varicocele and its association with seminal parameters. The purpose of this study
was to determine the concentrations of Se, Cu, and Zn in semen of patients with varicocele and the relationship with seminal
parameters. Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence was used for the fist time in the seminal fluid analysis. The concentration
of selenium in men with varicocele was smaller than the normozoospermic group, while no differences were observed for both
concentrations of zinc and copper. A significant positive correlation between zinc and selenium concentration was observed.
Selenium in seminal plasma correlates with a good spermatozoa concentrations, motility, and morphology. Additionally, a significant
positive correlation was observed between zinc levels and sperm count. In conclusion, a decrease in selenium concentration
was associated with detriment of seminal parameters. A study should be conducted to evaluate the benefits of both zinc and
selenium supplementation to improve seminal parameters in patients with varicocele. 相似文献

Plasma zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and magnesium (Mg) concentrations, copper/zinc ratio, and selenium (Se) status were studied
in 44 vegetarians (22 males and 22 females) and their age- and sex-matched nonvegetarians in the Bratislava region (Slovakia).
Vegetarians had statistically significant lower levels of plasma Zn and Cu than nonvegetarians, which may be the result of
lower bioavailability of Zn and Cu from this type of diet. No differences in plasma Mg levels were found between vegetarians
and nonvegetarians.
Se status, as expressed by plasma and erythrocyte concentrations and plasma and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activities
(GPx), was significantly lower in vegetarians when compared to nonvegetarians. In the series as a whole, there were significantly
higher correlations between plasma and erythrocyte Se concentrations and between plasma and erythrocyte GPx activities. Significant
positive correlations were also found between plasma Se concentrations and erythrocyte GPx activities, and between erythrocyte
Se concentrations and erythrocyte GPx activities.
A vegetarian diet does not provide a sufficient supply of essential antioxidant trace elements, like Zn, Cu, and especially
Se. Se supplementation should be recommended to this risk group of the population. 相似文献

Selenium, iron, copper, and zinc levels and copper-to-zinc ratios in serum of patients at different stages of viral hepatic diseases 总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
Viral hepatic diseases, especially those induced by the hepatitis B virus, can progress into more serious pathological outcomes
and eventually to hepatocellular carcinoma. A growing body of evidence indicates that many trace elements play important roles
in a number of carcinogenic processes that proceed through various mechanisms. To examine the status of trace elements during
the development of hepatic carcinoma, we determined the selenium, iron, copper, and zinc levels and copper-to-zinc ratios
in the serum of patients at different stages of viral hepatic disease. We observed significant changes in the selenium, iron
copper, and zinc levels in the serum of patients having hepatocellular carcinoma, relative to those of healthy controls (p<0.05). The mean serum copper level in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma was significantly higher than that of the control
group. In contrast, the mean selenium, iron, and zinc levels in patients having hepatocellular carcinoma were significantly
lower than those of the control group. In addition, the mean zinc level in the serum of patients with hepatic cirrhosis was
significantly lower than that of the control group (p<0.05). Moreover, we found markedly elevated Cu: Zn ratios (p<0.05) in patients having hepatic cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Our findings imply that the levels of some trace
elements, such as selenium, iron, copper, and zinc, and Cu:Zn ratios, might serve as biomarkers for the increased severity
of viral hepatic damage. 相似文献

Valproic acid (VPA) may affect thyroid hormone profile, causing alteration in serum trace elements concentrations. The aim of this study was to prospectively investigate this relationship in children receiving VPA monotherapy for a period up to 6 months. Serum thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroglobuline (TG), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) levels were evaluated at baseline and at the 6th month in all the patients and in the control group. The mean Cu concentration in the 6th months of VPA therapy was significantly lower than that of the control group. TSH level was significantly increased in the patient group whereas FT4 was significantly decreased. The mean TSH level in the 6th month of VPA therapy was significantly higher than that of the control group, whereas mean T4 level was significantly lower. The Cu level in the 6th months of VPA therapy was positively correlated with T4 level. Δlog Cu and ΔTSH were negatively correlated. This study suggests that the alteration in the serum thyroid hormone profile during VPA therapy may result from the reduction in serum Cu levels. 相似文献

The objective was to examine changes in trace elements due to thyroid cancer in humans. Serum levels and tissue contents of trace elements (Zn, Cu, Mn, Mg, Fe and Se) were measured in 43 patients with thyroid cancer before and 4 days after surgery were compared to normal values. The serum levels of zinc in cancer patients were lower than those of normal subjects. Surgical removal of the cancer resulted in the restoration of these levels. Although serum Cu levels in patients were not different from normal, but post-operatively these levels rose significantly (p < 0.001). Levels of Fe, Mg and Mn were significantly lower (p < 0.001) post-operatively. There was no significant change in Serum Se levels. The thyroid tissue contents of these trace elements did not show a difference between the normal (Juxta-tumor) thyroid tissue and the cancerous lesion. Out of the six trace elements examined, the decrease of serum levels of zinc in cancer patients may be linked to the disease condition. It is suggested that this change: (a) may be used to demonstrate successful cancer surgery and (b) may have implications for a long-term follow-up of thyroid cancer patients. 相似文献

Iodine and zinc, but not selenium and copper, deficiency exists in a male Turkish population with endemic goiter 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Although endemic goiter has been shown to have a high prevalence in Turkey, little is known about the concentration of urinary
iodine, plasma selenium (Se), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in these patients. We studied on 140 male patient with endemic goiter
(mean age: 22.2 ± 0.19 yr) and 140 healthy male subjects (mean age: 21.8 ± 0.28 yr). Daily urinary iodine excretion was determined
by the ionometric method. Plasma Se, Zn, and Cu were determined by using atomic absorption spectrometry. Daily urinary iodine
excretion was found to be significantly lower in the patient group (38.7 ± 2.26 μg/d) than that of controls (50.73 ± 2.56
μg/day,p = 0.001). Plasma Zn concentrations were also found to be significantly lower in the patient group (1.04 ± 0.03 μg/mL) than
that of controls (1.16 ± 0.02 μg/mL,p = 0.001). No significant difference was determined in Se and Cu concentrations between the patient and control groups. Our
study shows that a moderate iodine deficiency exists in both patients with endemic goiter and control subjects, which indicates
the important role of iodine deficiency in the etiopathogenesis of endemic goiter in Turkey. Zinc deficiency may also contribute
to the pathogenesis of endemic goiter. However, Se and Cu do not seem to have any role in the etiopathogenesis of endemic
goiter in Turkey. A community-based iodine fortification program throughout the country may be proposed to take over the problem,
which also can prevent the contributing effects of other element deficiencies that occur when iodine deficiency is the prevailing
factor. 相似文献

A direct method for determination of Fe, Cu, Zn, Mg and Se in erythrocytes was developed. The aim of the present study was to establish a method for examining perioperative levels of the above mentioned elements simultaneously in erythrocytes and plasma by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 11 patients undergoing neurosurgery for acute spinal nerve compressions because of intervertebral disk prolapses. Reference values for erythrocytes were 11.49 +/- 3.48 mmol/mmol Hb; 0.82 +/- 0.087 mmol/mmol Hb; 9.01 +/- 2.20 mmol/mmol Hb; 0.104 +/- 0.032 mmol/mmol Hb; 0.07 +/- 0.050 mmol/mmol Hb for iron, copper, zinc, magnesium, and selenium, respectively. Postoperative erythrocyte concentrations did not differ significantly compared to those obtained preoperatively and remained within the reference ranges perioperatively. For plasma the following reference values were used: 19.0 +/- 8.0 mmol/l (Fe); 20.1 +/- 8.2 mmol/l (Cu); 15.4 +/- 4.6 mmol/l (Zn); 0.9 +/- 0.15 mmol/l (Mg); 1.02 +/- 0.3 mmol/l (Se). There was a significant decrease in the concentration of copper in plasma (13.41 +/- 3.46 mmol/l, p < 0.1) and zinc (10.73 +/- 2.73 mmol/l, p < 0.1) immediately postoperative, iron (10.56 +/- 3.91 mmol/l, p < 0.1) and zinc on day 1 (11.28 +/- 1.88 mmol/l, p < 0.10), and a significant postoperative increase of copper on day 5 (18.81 +/- 3.97 mmol/l, p < 0.1), postoperatively. The mean plasma concentrations of iron, copper, zinc magnesium and selenium remained within the reference ranges during the entire period. 相似文献

It is known that certain trace elements can affect various heart diseases. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the changes in concentrations of certain serum trace elements in patients with chronic rheumatic heart disease (RHD). Serum analysis of selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) trace elements was assayed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. RHD patients had significantly lower serum concentrations of Se and Zn than control subjects (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). However, the serum Cu concentration was significantly higher in RHD patients than in controls (1.93 +/- 0.59 microg/L vs 1.06 +/- 0.29 microg/L; p < 0.001). Similarly, the Cu/Zn ratio in RHD patients was higher than in control subjects (4.70 +/- 0.92 vs 1.68 +/- 0.45; p < 0.001). Additionally, no significant correlation was found among these trace element concentrations and the functional capacity classes (p > 0.05). RHD patients had decreased serum Se and Zn element concentrations and increased serum Cu element concentration. We suggest that Se and Zn deficiency might be contributory factors in the development of rheumatic heart disease, and a high Cu concentration and a high Cu/Zn ratio might reflect an ongoing inflammatory process in this disease. 相似文献

Concentration of selenium in the whole blood and the thyroid tissue of patients with various thyroid diseases 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
We investigated the possible differences between the concentrations of selenium in the whole blood and thyroid tissue of patients
with thyroid disease. The study comprises 41 women with nodular goiter, 19 women and 2 men with thyroid cancer, 18 women with
Graves’ disease, and 7 women with thyroiditis. The concentration of selenium was determined by the TRXRF method. The lowest
mean selenium level was achieved in the whole blood of women with Graves’ disease and the highest in the whole blood of healthy
people. In the thyroid cancer tissue, we found the lowest concentration of selenium and the highest in the thyroid gland of
women with nodular goiter and Graves’ disease. The low selenium levles in the thyroid tissue may increase thyroid cancer risk. 相似文献

This study investigated the effects of a single dose of intravenously administered sodium 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonate
(DMPS) on the essential elements copper, zinc, and selenium in human blood and urine. The possible role of dental amalgam
was also addressed. Eighty individuals, divided in four groups according to the presence or absence of dental amalgam fillings
and symptoms self-related to such fillings, were given DMPS (2 mg/kg body wt) and 500 mL Ringer’s acetate intravenously. Urine
and blood were collected prior to the injection, and thereafter at intervals over a 24-h period. Cu, Zn, and Se concentrations
were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry methods.
A statistically significant increase in the concentrations of Cu and Zn in urine was observed 30 and 120 min after the DMPS
injection compared to the preinjection concentrations. The concentrations of Se were not affected. The cumulated excretion
over 24 h after DMPS injection constitutes only from 0.1% to 0.7% of the body content of these elements. There was no effect
of different amalgam statuses on Cu and Zn excretion.
We found a temporary decrease (4–7%) in the concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Se in blood 15 and 30 min after DMPS, but this seems
to be the result of dilution factors. Administration of a single dose of DMPS does not affect the body stores of the essential
elements Cu, Zn, and Se. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to measure the alterations in serum selenium (Se), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) concentrations
and their carrier proteins, ceruloplasmin (Cp), transferrin (Tf) albumin, and related antioxidant enzyme activities, erythrocyte
Cu-Zn Superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) activities in patients with cutaneous
leishmaniasis (CL). Erythrocyte Cu-Zn SOD activities, serum Cu concentrations, and Cp levels were found to be significantly
higher in the patients group than those of controls. However, GSH-Px and CAT activities and Se, Zn, Fe, and Tf levels were
lower in patients than in the control subjects. There were positive important correlation’s between Cu-Zn SOD and Cp, Cu-Zn
SOD and Cu, Cp and Cu, GSH-Px and Se, and Fe and CAT in the patients group. Our results showed that serum essential trace
elements Se, Zn, Cu, and Fe concentrations and their related enzymes Cu-Zn SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT activities change in CL patients.
The changes may be a part of defense strategies of organism and are induced by the hormonelike substances. 相似文献

In previous studies based on indirect procedures, we reported that Mg deficit increased the bioavailability of a number of elements such as calcium, zinc, iron, copper, manganese and decreased selenium absorption. The present study was designed to verify these findings by direct methods. We investigated the effect of dietary magnesium deficiency on enterocyte Ca, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and Se concentrations. Male Wistar rats were fed a Mg-deficient diet (129 mg Mg/kg food) for 70 days. Whole enterocytes from the upper jejunum were isolated and Ca, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and Se were determined. The results were compared with findings in a control group that was pair-fed with an identical diet except that it covered this species's nutritional requirements for Mg (480 mg Mg/kg food). The Mg-deficient diet significantly increased enterocyte content of Ca, Fe, Zn, Cu and Mn; however, we found no significant changes in the Se content of these cells. These data support the results obtained by indirect methods. 相似文献

Serum and tissue levels of six trace elements and copper/zinc ratio in patients with cervical cancer and uterine myoma 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between trace elements and the incidence of cervical cancer. Tissue
and serum levels of six elements (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ca, and Se) and the Cu/Zn ratio in 40 cases of patients with cervical cancer,
30 cases of uterine myoma, and 50 healthy subjects were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry; the selenium content
was determined by atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The results showed that the tissue contents of Zn, Se, and Ca were significantly
lower and the Cu and Fe concentrations and Cu/Zn ratio were significantly higher in cervical cancer tissue than that for paired
nonlesion tissue (p<0.02 and p<0.001, respectively). The serum levels of Zn, Se, Ca, and Fe were lower and Cu and Mn levels and Cu/Zn ratio were higher
in patients with cervical cancer than in healthy subjects (p<0.01 and p<0.001, respectively) and in the uterine myoma group compared with healthy subjects (p< 0.05–0.001). There are no significant differences in the contents of six elements and the Cu/Zn ratio between uterine myoma
tissue and paired nonlesion tissue. The results showed also that the Fe level and Cu/Zn ratio were significantly higher and
the Zn and Se levels were significantly lower in cervical cancer tissue than in uterine myoma tissue (p<0.01 and p<0.001, respectively). The serum Cu level and Cu/Zn ratio were significantly higher in the cervical cancer group than the
uterine myoma group (p<0.01). Data were also analyzed using multivarate logistic regression. After adjustment for age, occupation, life habit, and
other covariates for the development of cervical cancer, the odds ratios were 22.64 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.64–90.88,
p=0.001) for Cu, 0.11 (95% CI: 0.034–0.373; p=0.005) for Zn, and 0.60 (95% CI: 0.36–0.99, p=0.01) for Se. Thus, the serum and tissue levels of Cu increase and the deficiency of Zn and Se may be risk factors for the
development of cervical cancer. 相似文献

Selenium (Se), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) concentrations were determined in plasma of 64 mothers at delivery, 58 nonpregnant women, 64 neonates, and 12 infants, aged 2–12 mo. Se and Zn concentrations in mothers at delivery were significantly lower, and Cu higher than in nonpregnant women. Mean Se and Cu concentrations in newborns were statistically lower than those in mothers at delivery, and Zn and Cu concentrations in preterm infants (n=13) were significantly higher than in fullterm infants (n=51). Maternal parity had no significant influence on the distribution of plasma trace element levels. No significant differences were observed in Se and Zn levels in maternal and cord blood plasma according to birth weight, contrary to maternal Cu concentration. Significant correlations were found between maternal and cord blood Se content, and between maternal plasma Cu concentration and birth weight of neonates. 相似文献

In recent years, a great number of studies have investigated the possible role of trace elements in the etiology and pathogenesis
of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoartritis (OA). We studied synovial fluid and plasma concentrations of selenium (Se),
zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) in patients with RA and OA and compared them with sex- and age-matched healthy subjects.
Plasma albumin levels were measured as an index of nutritional status. Plasma Se, Cu, and Zn concentrations were determined
by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and Fe concentrations were determined by the colorimetric method. Although plasma and
synovial fluid Se concentration were found to be significantly lower (p<0.05, and p<0.05, respectively), Cu concentrations were significantly higher in patients with RA than those of healthy subjects and OA
(p<0.05 and p<0.05, respectively). There were no significant differences in plasma and synovial fluid Zn concentrations and albumin levels
among three groups (p>0.05). On the other hand, synovial fluid Cu and Fe concentrations were significantly higher in patients with OA than those
of healthy subjects (p<0.05). There was a significantly positive correlation between synovial fluid Se−Cu values and Zn−Fe values in patients with
RA. Our results showed that synovial fluid and plasma trace element concentrations, excluding Zn, change in inflammatory RA,
but not in OA. These alterations in trace element concentrations in inflammatory Ra might be a result on the changes of the
immunoregulatory cytokines. 相似文献

Trace elements are known to have a key role in myocardial metabolism. The accumulation (cobalt, arsenic, copper) or deficiency
(selenium, zinc) of trace elements may be responsible for idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. We investigated the trace element
concentrations (Cu, Zn, Mg) in sera from patients with dilated cardiomyopathy by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. We observed
that patients with dilated cardiomyopathies have higher copper and lower zinc concentrations in serum than healthy controls.
The magnesium concentrations of patients did not differ significantly from that of control subjects. 相似文献

The most common histological variants of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), classical (CPTC) and follicular (FPTC), have different diagnostic features, molecular biology, and prognosis. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) endopeptidase which degrades the components of the extracellular matrix is essential in the invasive growth and metastasizing of malignant tumors. The serum copper (Cu)/zinc (Zn) ratios are sensitive diagnostic and prognostic indicators in oncology since Cu- and Zn-dependent enzymes play important roles in the genesis and the progression of tumors. The aim of this study was to examine the expressions of MMP-9 in tissues of CPTC and FPTC, as well as to determine the Cu/Zn ratios in the same samples. MMP-9 was determined immunohistochemically, and the concentrations of copper and zinc in thyroid tissue were determined by means of flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The results obtained revealed significantly higher expressions of MMP-9 in CPTC in comparison with FPTC, as well as higher Cu/Zn ratios in CPTC than in FPTC. Thus, determining MMP-9 activities and the Cu/Zn ratios could improve the accuracy of the standard histopathological diagnosis of these two types of PTC. 相似文献
