Inputs of terrestrial arthropods (number and mass m–2 d–1 ) from riparian corridors to three streams representing different orders were highly variable among seasons and sites, with significantly greater ( P < 0.05) inputs at the headwater stream during summer months, compared with other sites and seasons.

1. Allochthonous detritus is the major source of energy in forested streams, but less is known of the importance of terrestrial subsidies to open‐canopy streams. Here, we used stable isotope analysis to assess the importance of allochthonous versus autochthonous energy sources to invertebrate shredders in four open‐canopy streams in Sweden. Shredders and potential food sources were analysed at both open sites and those with deciduous trees in the riparian zone. 2. Mixing models showed that allochthonous coarse particulate organic matter was the most important energy source to shredders at both the open and wooded sites, suggesting that terrestrial subsidies may be an important process in open‐canopy streams, just as they are in forested streams. 3. However, shredders at open sites had a larger proportion of biofilm in their diet than at wooded sites, indicating an ability of shredders to adjust their diet with food availability. 4. We also used the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope signatures to assess the size of the feeding niche of shredders. Feeding on both allochthonous and autochthonous sources at open sites was reflected in a larger feeding niche than at wooded sites for one of the three species analysed. The importance of fluvial hydraulics to fish-habitat restoration in low-gradient alluvial streams 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
- 1 A major cause of degradation and loss of stream fish is alteration of physical habitat within and adjacent to the channel. We describe a potentially efficient approach to fish restoration based upon the relationship between fluvial hydraulics, geomorphology, and those habitats important to fish.
- 2 The aquatic habitat in a low-gradient, alluvial stream in the Ozark Plateaus physiographical province was classified according to location in the channel, patterns of water flow, and structures that control flow. The resulting habitat types were ranked in terms of their temporal stability and ability to be manipulated.
- 3 Delineation and quantification of discrete physical spaces in a stream, termed hydraulic habitat units, are shown to be useful in stream restoration programmes if the ecological importance of each habitat unit is known, and if habitats are defined by fluvial dynamics so that restoration is aided by natural forces.
- 4 Examples, using different taxa, are given to illustrate management options.

Effect of riparian land use on contributions of terrestrial invertebrates to streams 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Since terrestrial invertebrates are often consumed by stream fishes, land-use practices that influence the input of terrestrial invertebrates to streams are predicted to have consequences for fish production. We studied the effect of riparian land-use regime on terrestrial invertebrate inputs by estimating the biomass, abundance and taxonomic richness of terrestrial invertebrate drift from 15 streams draining catchments with three different riparian land-use regimes and vegetation types: intensive grazing — exotic pasture grasses (4 streams), extensive grazing — native tussock grasses (6 streams), reserve — native forest (5 streams). Terrestrial invertebrate drift was sampled from replicated stream reaches enclosed by two 1 mm mesh drift nets that spanned the entire channel. The mean biomass of terrestrial invertebrates that entered tussock grassland (12 mg ash-free dry mass m–2 d–1) and forest streams (6 mg AFDM m–2 d–1) was not significantly different (p > 0.05). However, biomass estimated for tussock grassland and forest streams was significantly higher than biomass that entered pasture streams (1 mg AFDM m–2 d–1). Mean abundance and richness of drifting terrestrial invertebrates was not significantly different among land-use types. Winged insects contributed more biomass than wingless invertebrates to both pasture and tussock grassland streams. Winged and wingless invertebrates contributed equally to biomass entering forest streams. Land use was a useful variable explaining landscape-level patterns of terrestrial invertebrate input for New Zealand streams. Evidence from this study suggests that riparian land-use regime will have important influences on the availability of terrestrial invertebrates to stream fishes. 相似文献

Synopsis The spatio-temporal availability to, and use of terrestrial (allochthonous) prey by, a subset of the fish assemblage of a Virginia piedmont stream were investigated during spring and summer. Terrestrial invertebrates were most abundant in drift nets, but least common in fish stomachs, during April. In contrast, during August, terrestrial prey dominated the diet of the major cyprinid fish,Notropis ardens, even though terrestrial prey availability in the stream declined by an order of magnitude. Several other co-occurring fishes only rarely consumed prey of terrestrial origin. Drifting terrestrial invertebrates, were concentrated at the surface near the thalweg, compared to stream margin or substrate locations. This study suggests that morphologial and behavioral constraints of individual fish taxa, including predator avoidance responses, regulate the use of terrestrial prey within a given fish assemblage. 相似文献

PCB congeners, DDT and metabolites were determined in suspended sediments and in the oysterCrassostrea angulata from the upper Sado estuary over two years (1987/88 and 1990) and from Ria Formosa during 1990. Levels of DDT concentrations in suspended sediments collected in both estuarine areas, either in 1988 or 1990, increased in winter. Otherwise, PCB concentrations varied in an erratic way. A DDT enrichment was also recorded inC. angulata in winter and an increase of only PCB concentration levels in oysters of the upper Sado estuary was registered at the same period. These results suggest that, in the absence of important direct sources of PCB and DDT, runoff appears to be the major source of those compounds in both the study areas. Levels of concentrations of these pollutants in oysters reflect either their increase in the environment or changes in particle dynamics in the two estuarine areas. 相似文献

We examined the importance of nitrogen inputs from groundwater and runoff in a small coastal marine cove on Cape Cod, MA,
USA. We evaluated groundwater inputs by three different methods: a water budget, assuming discharge equals recharge; direct
measurements of discharge using bell jars; and a budget of water and salt at the mouth of the Cove over several tidal cycles.
The lowest estimates were obtained by using a water budget and the highest estimates were obtained using a budget of water
and salt at the Cove mouth. Overall there was more than a five fold difference in the freshwater inputs calculated by using
these methods.
Nitrogen in groundwater appears to be largely derived from on site septic systems. Average nitrate concentrations were highest
in the region where building density was greatest. Nitrate in groundwater appeared to behave conservatively in sandy sediments
where groundwater flow rates were high (> 11/m2/h), indicating that denitrification was not substantially reducing external nitrogen loading to the Cove.
Nitrogen inputs from groundwater were approximately 300 mmol-N/m3/y of Cove water. Road runoff contributed an additional 60 mmol/m3/y. Total nitrogen inputs from groundwater and road runoff to this cove were similar in magnitude to river dominated estuaries

There are currently 1590 terrestrial arthropod species identified as alien to Europe. Of these, 513 are predators or parasites. The largest group is the insects (409 species), followed by spiders (47 species), myriapods (34 species) and mites (23 species). The species within these alien groupings are extremely diverse, as highlighted by the large number of families represented (115 families). The majority (66.1%) of alien arthropod predator and parasite species arrived unintentionally, but at least 174 (33.9%) have been introduced intentionally, mainly for biological control purposes. Assessment of the major invasion pathways is difficult due to the lack of comprehensive information but it is likely that the majority of predatory or parasitic alien arthropods arrive through leading-edge dispersal or as contaminants and stowaways. The number of new species arriving in Europe has progressively increased since 1500, with the increase in global trade over the last century accelerating this rate of increase. Only a small number of alien predatory and parasitic arthropods in Europe have been shown to cause either an ecological or economical impact, yet knowledge is severely limited by a paucity of data. 相似文献

We report the first detailed study of the terrestrial invertebrate fauna of the Byers Peninsula SSSI, Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands. Fourteen micro-arthropod taxa (10 Acari, four Collembola) and two Diptera are recorded, including the first record of the mite Edwardzetes dentifer from the maritime Antarctic. The first record of the midge Belgica antarctica from neighbouring Snow Island is also given. Population composition and density were described in samples from a wide range of terrestrial and freshwater habitats. There was no strong relationship between habitat and microarthropod species occurrence, although comparison of completely vegetated and more stony sites revealed greater population densities at the vegetated sites, and different species proportions at each. Some individual samples contained a wide range of species with none achieving numerical dominance, whilst others from superficially similar sites were dominated by one species. Dipterans were limited to a small number of lakes, streams and seepage areas, where they were sometimes abundant. Population density data and species occurrence are compared with previously published studies from the maritime Antarctic and elsewhere. 相似文献

Nematomorph parasites alter the behavior of their orthopteran hosts, driving them to water and creating a source of food for stream salmonids. We investigated whether nematomorphs could explain variation in terrestrial subsidies across several streams. In nine study streams, orthopterans comprise much of the stomach contents of trout (46 ± 31% on average). Total mass of ingested prey per trout biomass positively correlated with the mass of orthopterans ingested, suggesting that the orthopterans enhanced absolute mass of prey consumption by the trout population. The orthopterans ingested per trout biomass positively correlated with the abundance of nematomorphs in the stream, but not with the abundance of camel crickets (the dominant hosts) around the streams. Streams in conifer plantations had fewer nematomorphs than streams in natural deciduous forests. These results provide the first quantitative evidence that a manipulative parasite can explain variation in the allochthonous energy flow through and across ecosystems. 相似文献

Riparian forests play an important role in stream ecosystems, as they support biodiversity, reduce water erosion, and provide litter that fuels aquatic biota. However, they are affected by great array of anthropogenic threats (e.g., fire, logging, and organic pollution), which alter species composition and their physical structure. Although forest recovery after disturbance such as logging can take decades, the legacy of forest clear-cut logging on key processes in tropical riparian ecosystems is mostly unknown. Here, we investigated how litter inputs (leaves, twigs, and reproductive parts) and storage, key processes for carbon and nutrient recycling and for forest and stream biota, are influenced by riparian vegetation undergoing succession (after 28 years from logging) through the comparison of reference and logged forest sites in the Cerrado biome. Litterfall was overall similar between forest types, but litterfall of twigs was twofold higher at logged than reference sites. Similarly, litter inputs from the bank to the stream (i.e., lateral inputs) and streambed storage were 50–60% higher at logged than reference sites. The higher litterfall observed in logged forests could be related to higher proportion of tree species that are characteristic of primary and secondary successional stages, including fast-growing and liana species, which often are more productive and common in anthropogenic areas. Our results showed that the legacy impact of clear-cut logging, even if residual woody vegetation is maintained in riparian buffers, can shift the type, quantity, and seasonality of litter subsidies to tropical streams. This knowledge should be considered within the context of management and conservation of communities and ecosystem processes in the forest-stream interfaces. 相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. In regional studies of surface-water acidification, annual means of chemical variables are often used to describe differences and change. Outputs from hydrochemical models are often in the form of mean values, which are used in biological models, and these, in turn, are usually derived from responses to mean conditions. Thus, biological forecasts are constrained to ignore the possible effects of the short-term variations in water chemistry which characterize acid streams. This approach requires appraisal.
2. Here, regional Welsh data and daily records from a smaller number of streams were used to investigate the estimation of pH parameters. Variations in aluminium concentration in relation to pH were also assessed. Empirical relationships between invertebrate assemblages, fish populations, mean stream chemistry and measures of fluctuation in pH and aluminium concentration were explored.

In general, pH or Al variability and mean pH or Al in Welsh streams were closely related, so that the biological influences of episodes could not easily be separated from those of chronic conditions. Mean pH and mean aluminium concentration were the most effective pH and aluminium statistics used in multivariate models of trout density, which were not improved by including other pH or aluminium variables. For models of invertebrate assemblages based on mean pH or mean aluminium, the inclusion of variables related to episodicity (e.g. pH minimum, aluminium maximum) gave moderate increases in precision.

Four arthropod datasets of different taxonomic detail were compared on their discriminatory power for various environmental
characteristics in a lowland floodplain area along the river Rhine. The arthropod datasets comprised ground-dwelling arthropods
at class-order level (n = 10), beetle families (n = 32), ground beetle genera (n = 30) and ground beetle species (n = 68). Environmental characteristics included vegetation characteristics, hydro-topographic setting, physical–chemical soil
properties and soil contamination levels. Relations between arthropod assemblages and environmental factors were assessed
with variance partitioning: a multivariate statistical approach that attributes variation in community composition to specific
explaining variables. The variance partitioning showed comparable results for the four datasets. A substantial part of the
variation (31–38%) could be ascribed to vegetation characteristics. Variance could further be attributed to physical–chemical
soil properties (7–10%), hydro-topographic setting (3–7%) and soil metal contamination (2–4%). Thus, in strongly heterogeneous
landscapes like lowland river floodplains, relatively coarse taxonomic data can already provide a valuable indication of the
relative importance of different environmental factors for structuring arthropod communities. However, the ground beetles
showed a higher specificity for different vegetation types and a more distinct relation to soil contamination levels than
the other arthropod datasets. Hence, a higher degree of taxonomic detail will be beneficial for investigating the consequences
of for example environmental pollution or vegetation characteristics in terms of taxonomic diversity or community composition. 相似文献

As an addendum to a recent publication on the terrestrial arthropod fauna of the Byers Peninsula Site of Special Scientific
Interest (SSSI), which included preliminary identification of four Collembola, we now present detailed information on Collembola
occurring within the SSSI. Five species were recorded [Friesea grisea (Schaffer), Tullbergia mixta Wahlgren, Isotoma (Folsomotoma) octooculata (Willem), Cyptopygus antarcticus Willem, and Cryptopygus sp. nov.]. Species occurrence and abundance differed between samples collected from poorly vegetated stony ground and vegetation
cores. F. grisea was both the commonest (58% of individuals) and the most widely distributed (18/19 samples) springtail in the former habitat.
Cryptopygus sp. nov. was recorded only in the vegetation core samples. All five species were more evenly distributed in vegetation samples,
although C. antarcticus and Cryptopygus sp. nov. were again the least abundant. A list of the terrestrial arthropods of the SSSI is presented.

Sources,fates, and impacts of nitrogen inputs to terrestrial ecosystems: review and synthesis 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The relative importance of nitrogen inputs from atmospheric deposition and biological fixation is reviewed in a number of diverse, non-agricultural terrestrial ecosystems. Bulk precipitation inputs of N (l–l2 kg N ha–1 yr–1) are the same order of magnitude as, or frequently larger than, the usual range of inputs from nonsymbiotic fixation (< 1=" –=" 5=" kg=" n=">–1 yr–1), especially in areas influenced by industrial activity. Bulk precipitation measurements may underestimate total atmospheric deposition by 30–40% because they generally do not include all forms of wet and dry deposition. Symbiotic fixation generally ranges from 10–160 kg N ha–1 yr–1) in ecosystems where N-fixing species are present during early successional stages, and may exceed the range under unusual conditions.Rates of both symbiotic and nonsymbiotic fixation appear to be greater during early successional stages of forest development, where they have major impacts on nitrogen dynamics and ecosystem productivity. Fates and impacts of these nitrogen inputs are important considerations that are inadequately understood. These input processes are highly variable in space and time, and few sites have adequate comparative information on both nitrogen deposition and fixation.
