Fourteen men aged 73-94 showed a fall in leucocyte ascorbic acid levels during five days'' treatment with 1 g of tetracycline daily. A control group of nine men aged 74-90 showed no fall in leucocyte ascorbic acid levels. Of the control group, three were treated with phenobarbitone 60 mg thrice daily, three with phenylbutazone 200 mg thrice daily, and three with aloxiprin 1,200 mg four times a day. A further two men aged 87 and 90 showed increased urinary excretion of ascorbic acid while receiving 1 g of tetracycline daily. 相似文献

Fourteen elderly patients aged 58 to 91 with varying leucocyte ascorbic acid levels had urinary hydroxyproline/creatinine ratios measured before, during, and after treatment with ascorbic acid 1 g. daily for six days. The ratio increased during treatment in those patients whose initial ascorbic acid levels were below 15μg./108 white blood cells. It is suggested that collagen metabolism may be impaired in these patients, and that all such patients should receive ascorbic acid supplements. 相似文献

Leucocyte and plasma ascorbic acid values were measured in healthy students, adult factory employees, and old people not receiving supplementary vitamin C and in healthy old people receiving 500 mg of vitamin C daily. Significant positive correlations between leucocyte and plasma ascorbic acid were found in all the groups. The regression lines differed significantly between one another within the sexes, but the pooled lines for each sex did not differ significantly in the unsupplemented groups. The relationship between plasma and leucocyte ascorbic acid values in the supplemented group differed significantly from that in the pooled unsupplemented groups.There was a limited range of variation in leucocyte ascorbic acid values compared with the range in plasma values in the supplemented group, whereas there was a wider range of variation in the leucocyte values in the unsupplemented groups. Leucocytes can therefore achieve a saturation level of ascorbic acid. Measurement of leucocyte ascorbic acid concentrations alone does not provide a reliable guide for the estimation of tissue status of ascorbic acid in normal individuals. Leucocyte concentrations provide a measure of the availability of ascorbic acid for storage, and plasma levels give an indication of its metabolic turnover rate. When these values are related the regression lines provide information about the storage and metabolism of ascorbic acid in normal individuals. 相似文献

The site of localization and concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) in a number of tissues of the pigeon were studied by a modified histochemical method coupled with cytophotoelectrometric determinations. It was evident from the data that significant variations were found in AA concentrations of different tissues of the pigeon. The brain possessed the highest content of AA/cell. The liver, ovary, pancreatic acini, kidney, adrenal and testis followed in order, whereas, the pancreatic islet region was the poorest in AA. On the basis of the synchronization of the high AA content of these tissues with their well known high level of metabolic activity, it is suggested that AA participates in the metabolic turnover by serving as an electron donor via the formation of its free radical. Considering the fact that these organs are very rich in ascorbic acid, there is also a possibility for the biosynthesis of AA in tissues like the liver and kidney of the pigeon as in other bird species. Background
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become one of the most prevalent chronic liver disease all over the world. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between dietary vitamin C intake and NAFLD.Method
Subjects were diagnosed with NAFLD by abdominal ultrasound examination and the consumption of alcohol was less than 40g/day for men or less than 20g/day for women. Vitamin C intake was classified into four categories according to the quartile distribution in the study population: ≤74.80 mg/day, 74.81–110.15 mg/day, 110.16–146.06 mg/day, and ≥146.07 mg/day. The energy and multi-variable adjusted odds ratio (OR), as well as their corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI), were used to determine the relationship between dietary vitamin C intake and NAFLD through logistic regression.Result
The present cross-sectional study included 3471 subjects. A significant inverse association between dietary vitamin C intake and NAFLD was observed in the energy-adjusted and the multivariable model. The multivariable adjusted ORs (95%CI) for NAFLD were 0.69 (95%CI: 0.54–0.89), 0.93 (95%CI: 0.72–1.20), and 0.71 (95%CI: 0.53–0.95) in the second, third and fourth dietary vitamin C intake quartiles, respectively, compared with the lowest (first) quartile. The relative odds of NAFLD was decreased by 0.71 times in the fourth quartile of dietary vitamin C intake compared with the lowest quartile. After stratifying data by sex or the status of obesity, the inverse association remained valid in the male population or non-obesity population, but not in the female population or obesity population.Conclusion
There might be a moderate inverse association between dietary vitamin C intake and NAFLD in middle-aged and older adults, especially for the male population and non-obesity population. 相似文献10.

Vitamin K is essential for activation of γ-carboxyglutamate (Gla)-proteins including the vascular calcification inhibitor matrix Gla-protein (MGP). Insufficient vitamin K intake leads to production of uncarboxylated, mostly inactive proteins and contributes to an increased cardiovascular risk. In kidney transplant recipients, cardiovascular risk is high but vitamin K intake and status have not been defined. We investigated dietary vitamin K intake, vascular vitamin K status and its determinants in kidney transplant recipients. We estimated vitamin K intake in a cohort of kidney transplant recipients (n = 60) with stable renal function (creatinine clearance 61 [42–77] (median [interquartile range]) ml/min), who were 75 [35–188] months after transplantation, using three-day food records and food frequency questionnaires. Vascular vitamin K status was assessed by measuring plasma desphospho-uncarboxylated MGP (dp-ucMGP). Total vitamin K intake was below the recommended level in 50% of patients. Lower vitamin K intake was associated with less consumption of green vegetables (33 vs 40 g/d, p = 0.06) and increased dp-ucMGP levels (621 vs 852 pmol/L, p<0.05). Accordingly, dp-ucMGP levels were elevated (>500 pmol/L) in 80% of patients. Multivariate regression identified creatinine clearance, coumarin use, body mass index, high sensitivity-CRP and sodium excretion as independent determinants of dp-ucMGP levels. In a considerable part of the kidney transplant population, vitamin K intake is too low for maximal carboxylation of vascular MGP. The high dp-ucMGP levels may result in an increased risk for arterial calcification. Whether increasing vitamin K intake may have health benefits for kidney transplant recipients should be addressed by future studies. 相似文献

Abstract A study was conducted on 20 “Rahmani” male lambs of 16 kg body weight fed on normal feed level and high vitamin A level (NF-HV); normal feed level and normal vitamin A level (NF-NV); low feed level and high vitamin A level (LF-HV) or low feed level and normal vitamin A level (LF-NV) till slaughter weight of 35–40 kg. Average daily gains of lambs were 211, 148, 117 and 87 g for the NF-HV, NF-NV, LF-HV and LF-NV groups, respectively. The corresponding feed conversions were 4.3, 5.9, 5.0 and 6.4 kg DM/kg gain. Raising feed intake and vitamin A level enhanced nutrients digestibility and nitrogen balance. Rumen liquor reflected higher pH value in animals fed higher intake (NF) in the first two diets. Both feed intake and vitamin A levels enhanced volatile fatty acids and ammonia concentrations in the rumen liquor. Feed intake and vitamin A levels positively affected haemoglobin content, packed cell volume, glucose, urea, total protein, vitamin A, insulin, cholesterol, phospholipids, glutamate oxaloacetate and glutamate pyruvate transaminases and alkaline phosphatase in blood. Vitamin A, insulin, cholesterol and phospholipids in blood increased gradually over the experimental period. Dressing percentages were 56.2, 49.6, 49.1 and 44.6% for the experimental groups, respectively. Liver content of glycogen and vitamin A increased with increasing feed intake and vitamin A levels. It is concluded that higher levels of vitamin A supplementation (than usually recommended) is required during fattening of lambs. Low energy and normal vitamin A levels are not recommended in lambs feeding. 相似文献

Abstract: Large amounts of ascorbic acid were readily removed from neural tissue by washing with warmed saline solutions. In areas where the original level was highest, such as cortex and cerebellum, a higher percentage was removed than from areas of lower concentration, such as pons-medulla. The residual level in both types of tissue was similar. During scurvy, the ascorbic acid retained in the guinea pig brain is more readily removed by washing than is that of the normal brain. 相似文献

Background
Weather is a potentially important determinant of physical activity. Little work has been done examining the relationship between weather and physical activity, and potential modifiers of any relationship in older people. We therefore examined the relationship between weather and physical activity in a cohort of older community-dwelling people.Methods
We analysed prospectively collected cross-sectional activity data from community-dwelling people aged 65 and over in the Physical Activity Cohort Scotland. We correlated seven day triaxial accelerometry data with daily weather data (temperature, day length, sunshine, snow, rain), and a series of potential effect modifiers were tested in mixed models: environmental variables (urban vs rural dwelling, percentage of green space), psychological variables (anxiety, depression, perceived behavioural control), social variables (number of close contacts) and health status measured using the SF-36 questionnaire.Results
547 participants, mean age 78.5 years, were included in this analysis. Higher minimum daily temperature and longer day length were associated with higher activity levels; these associations remained robust to adjustment for other significant associates of activity: age, perceived behavioural control, number of social contacts and physical function. Of the potential effect modifier variables, only urban vs rural dwelling and the SF-36 measure of social functioning enhanced the association between day length and activity; no variable modified the association between minimum temperature and activity.Conclusions
In older community dwelling people, minimum temperature and day length were associated with objectively measured activity. There was little evidence for moderation of these associations through potentially modifiable health, environmental, social or psychological variables. 相似文献19.
High Levels of Ascorbic Acid, Not Glutathione, in the CNS of Anoxia-Tolerant Reptiles Contrasted with Levels in Anoxia-Intolerant Species 总被引:5,自引:2,他引:5
Abstract: Ascorbic acid and glutathione (GSH) are antioxidants and free radical scavengers that provide the first line of defense against oxidative damage in the CNS. Using HPLC with electrochemical detection, we determined tissue contents of these antioxidants in brain and spinal cord in species with varying abilities to tolerate anoxia, including anoxia-tolerant pond and box turtles, moderately tolerant garter snakes, anoxia-intolerant clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis), and intolerant Long-Evans hooded rats. These data were compared with ascorbate and GSH levels in selected regions of guinea pig CNS, human cortex, and values from the literature. Ascorbate levels in turtles were typically 100% higher than those in rat. Cortex, olfactory bulb, and dorsal ventricular ridge had the highest content in turtle, 5–6 µmol g?1 of tissue wet weight, which was twice that in rat cortex (2.82 ± 0.05 µmol g?1) and threefold greater than in guinea pig cortex (1.71 ± 0.03 µmol g?1). Regionally distinct levels (2–4 µmol g?1) were found in turtle cerebellum, optic lobe, brainstem, and spinal cord, with a decreasing anterior-to-posterior gradient. Ascorbate was lowest in white matter (optic nerve) in each species. Snake cortex and brainstem had significantly higher ascorbate levels than in rat or guinea pig, although other regions had comparable or lower levels. Frog ascorbate was generally in an intermediate range between that in rat and guinea pig. In contrast to ascorbate, GSH levels in anoxia-tolerant turtles, 2–3 µmol g?1 of tissue wet weight, were similar to those in mammalian or amphibian brain, with no consistent pattern associated with anoxia tolerance. GSH levels in pond turtle CNS were significantly higher (by 10–20%) than in rat for several regions but were generally lower than in guinea pig or frog. GSH in box turtle and snake CNS were the same or lower than in rat or guinea pig. The distribution GSH in the CNS also had a decreasing anterior-to-posterior gradient but with less variability than ascorbate; levels were similar in optic nerve, brainstem, and spinal cord. The paradoxically high levels of ascorbate in turtle brain, which has a lower rate of oxidative metabolism than mammalian, suggest that ascorbate is an essential cerebral antioxidant. High levels may have evolved to protect cells from oxidative damage when aerobic metabolism resumes after a hypoxic dive. 相似文献
