150 years “Biogenetic Law” The zoologist Ernst Haeckel is one of the most well‐known, but also one of the most controversial scientists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was one of the earliest Darwinists and a forceful advocate of evolutionary theory. Together with “Darwin's Bulldog” Thomas Henry Huxley, Haeckel was a central figure in the early history and popularization of Darwinism. But his name is not only a symbol for the disputes about the theory of evolution and its popularization, but also for a campaign for monism, a world‐view or philosophy created by Haeckel himself. Together with Fritz Müller, Ernst Haeckel was one of the first to formulate a “Biogenetic Law”. He also created several concepts and terms still in use in biology today, such as “ontogeny”, “phylogeny”, “ecology”, “cholorogy” and “phylum” in his first, and maybe most important book “General Morphology of Organism”, which was published in 1866, 150 years ago.  相似文献

Despite recent progress defining the morphological and genetic characteristics of forms of the bottlenose dolphin inhabiting offshore waters, little is known of their behavior or ranging patterns. Reports suggest that an “offshore form” exists between the 200- and 2,000-m isobaths in distinct Gulf of Mexico and western North Atlantic stocks, while one or more coastal forms inhabit the waters inshore. Two opportunities to track rehabilitated adult male bottlenose dolphins with satellite-linked transmitters occurred in 1997. “Rudy” stranded in NW Florida and was released in the Gulf of Mexico off central west Florida. He moved around Florida and northward to off Cape Hatteras, NC, covering 2,050 km in 43 d. “Gulliver” stranded near St. Augustine and was released off Cape Canaveral, FL. He moved 4,200 km in 47 d to a location northeast of the Virgin Islands. Gulliver swam through 5,000-m-deep waters 300 km offshore of the northern Caribbean islands, against the North Equatorial Current. These records expand the range and habitat previously reported for the offshore stock of bottlenose dolphins inhabiting the waters off the southeastern United States, underscore the difficulties of defining pelagic stocks, illustrate the success of rehabilitation efforts, indicate the value of follow-up monitoring of rehabilitated and released cetaceans, and expand our understanding of the long-range movement capabilities of a dolphin species more commonly thought of as a resident in coastal waters.  相似文献

Electrical activity in response to light stimuli was recorded from the brain of the cricket (Gryllus domesticus) using stainless steel microelectrodes. Four basic types of elements were observed as follows: (1) units which registered ambient light intensity by frequency of firing as well as responding with transient changes in rate to stepwise increases or decreases in intensity; (2) units which fired at a higher frequency in dark than in light; (3) units which fired continuously at low level in light and responded with a transient high frequency burst to light off; and (4) units which responded with a brief burst to on and off, but tended to be “on-dominant” or “off-dominant.” Also observed were synchronized spikes in mushroom body responding primarily to light off, but also on occasion to light on, and often accompanied by single unit responses. The units registering intensity are probably homologous with units showing similar properties recorded from the visual systems of several other arthropods and usually referred to as “sustaining units.” On-off, off, and dark units are also known from other forms. The mushroom body light responses were similar to synchronized spikes recorded in cockroach mushroom body following antennal stimulation.  相似文献

Armand de Ricqlès has had a long, successful career. From his start as an Assistant in the University of Paris in 1961, he defended his doctoral thesis in 1963, became Maître-Assistant (Assistant Professor) in 1970 (tenured 1971), defended his “doctorat d’état” (habilitation thesis) in 1973, was nominated Professor in the University Paris 7, was promoted to first class (Full Professor) in 1987, and was finally nominated to the prestigious chair “Biologie Historique et Évolutionnisme” (Historical and Evolutionary Biology) of the Collège de France in 1996. He lectured on a wide range of topics, especially in comparative and evolutionary biology, and assumed important administrative responsibilities, including responsibility of various master's programs, leadership of the team “Formations squelettiques” (1973–2002; till Professor Jacques Castanet took over leadership of the team), involvement in various committees, and in organizing scientific meetings. He served on several editorial committees and was co-editor of the “Annales des Sciences Naturelles”, as well as co-editor-in-chief of the “Comptes Rendus Palevol”. His scientific research always emphasized bone histology, especially paleohistology, but he also made contributions to systematic paleontology, phylogenetics, history of paleontology, and biological nomenclature, in decreasing order of importance. He has so far published over 100 scientific papers and 120 semi-popular papers.  相似文献

Prasanna K. Mohanty, a great scientist, a great teacher and above all a great human being, left us more than a year ago (on March 9, 2013). He was a pioneer in the field of photosynthesis research; his contributions are many and wide-ranging. In the words of Jack Myers, he would be a “photosynthetiker” par excellence. He remained deeply engaged with research almost to the end of his life; we believe that generations of researchers still to come will benefit from his thorough and enormous work. We present here his life and some of his contributions to the field of Photosynthesis Research. The response to this tribute was overwhelming and we have included most of the tributes, which we received from all over the world. Prasanna Mohanty was a pioneer in the field of “Light Regulation of Photosynthesis”, a loving and dedicated teacher—unpretentious, idealistic, and an honest human being.  相似文献

Henri Cartier‐Bresson (born Paris, 1908) is arguably the best‐known photographer of the Twentieth Century. He, along with Robert Capa and David Seymour, pioneered the medium of photo‐reportage using the 35mm camera. Cartier‐Bresson's theory of photography requires that the photographer be as inconspicuous as possible in order to capture the subject more‐or‐less unawares in a series of “decisive moments”. His idea that the camera is an “extension of the eye”, used to evoke a certain “truth”, is reminiscent of the Soviet filmmaker Dziga Vertov's theory of kinoki, the cine‐eye. In 1947 Cartier‐Bresson helped found the famed Magnum agency in Paris, with a view to freeing creative photographers from the exploitation of agents. Although he rarely grants an interview, recently Cartier‐Bresson gave the following interview to the French journalist Michel Guerrin.1  相似文献

The proteins and polysaccharides which are left adherent to the tissue culture substrate after EGTA-mediated removal of normal, virus-transformed, and revertant mouse cells (so-called SAM, or substrate-attached material), and which have been implicated in the cell-substrate adhesion process, have been characterized by SDS-PAGE and other types of analyses under various conditions of cell growth and attachment. The following components have been identified in SAM: 3 size classes of hyaluronate proteoglycans; glycoprotein Co (the LETS glycoprotein); protein Ca (a myosin-like protein); protein Cb (MW 85,000); protein C1 (MW 56,000, which is apparently not tubulin); protein C2 (actin); proteins C3–C5 (histones) which are artifactually bound to the substrate as a result of EGTA-mediated leaching from the cell; and proteins Cc, Cd, Ce, and Cf. The LETS glycoprotein (Co) and Cd appear in newly-synthesized SAM (which is probably enriched in “footpad” material – “footpads” being focal areas of subsurface membranous contact with the substrate) in greater relative quantities than in the SAM accumulated over a long period of time (which is probably enriched in “footprint” material – remnants of footpads left behind as cells move across the substrate). Co and Cd turn over very rapidly following short radiolabeling periods during chase analysis. The SAM's deposited during a wide variety of cellular attachment and growth conditions contained the same components in similar relative proportions. This may indicate well-controlled and coordinate deposition of a cell “surface” complex involving the hyaluronate proteoglycans, the LETS glycoprotein, actin-containing microfilaments with associated proteins, and a limited number of additional proteins in the substrate adhesion site. Evidence indicates that SAM is the remnant of “footpad” vesicles by which the cell adheres to the substrate and that EGTA treatment weakens the subsurface cytoskeleton, allowing these footpad vesicles to be pinched off from the rest of the cell. Three different models of cell-substrate adhesion are presented and discussed.  相似文献

Outer inflammatory protein A (OipA) is an important virulence factor associated with gastric cancer and ulcer development; however, the results have not been well established and turned out to be controversial. This study aims to elucidate the role of OipA in Helicobacter pylori infection using clinical strains harbouring oipA “on” and “off” motifs. Proteomics analysis was performed on AGS cell pre‐infection and postinfection with Hpylori oipA “on” and “off” strains, using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. AGS apoptosis and cell cycle assays were performed. Moreover, expression of vacuolating cytotoxin A (VacA) was screened using Western blotting. AGS proteins that have been suggested previously to play a role or associated with gastric disease were down‐regulated postinfection with oipA “off” strains comparing to oipA “on” strains. Furthermore, oipA “off” and ΔoipA cause higher level of AGS cells apoptosis and G0/G1 cell‐cycle arrest than oipA “on” strains. Interestingly, deletion of oipA increased bacterial VacA production. The capability of Hpylori to induce apoptosis and suppress expression of proteins having roles in human disease in the absence of oipA suggests that strains not expressing OipA may be less virulent or may even be protective against carcinogenesis compared those expressing OipA. This potentially explains the higher incidence of gastric cancer in East Asia where oipA “on” strains predominates.  相似文献

Response characteristics and trigger features are described for five operational classes of visual interneurons in the optic nerve of the hermit crab. The units were initially segregated on the basis of response sign (“on”, “off”, “on-off”) and duration (phasic, tonic). Tonicon” and tonicoff” units were observed to be indistinguishable from the previously described sustaining and dimming fibers of other decapod crustacea. Phasicoff” units closely resemble either jittery motion or novelty detectors also previously documented. Phasicon” units are characterized by an excitable antagonistic surround, a slow rate of habituation, and a sustained low level discharge during periods of increasing luminous flux at any point within their receptive fields. Highly sensitive to moving contours, they occasionally revealed a directional preference. The phasicon” units are also capable of following brief stimuli at rates of up to 20/sec. Phasicon-off” units were characterized by coextensive receptive fields for “on” and “off” responses and movement sensitivity independent of contrast.  相似文献

Early French discoveries of insect parasitoids and various aspects of their life cycle are discussed in this paper. Parasitism in insects first attracted the attention of French scientists in the 18th century, despite indifference of the famous encyclopedists of “the Age of Enlightenment” to this group of animals. Fortunately, a distinguished scientist of many talents, R.A. Ferchault de Réaumur (1683–1757), was interested in the study of insects. His work on insects, “Mémoires pour servir à l’histoire des insectes” published in six volumes, remains his most well known opus. He was the first person in France to describe an entomophagous insect (probably a Cotesia species) as well as several aspects of the biological characteristics of parasitoid life in 1736. Together with Latreille (1762–1833), he may be considered one of the founding fathers of entomology in France.  相似文献

The updated examination of the symbolic ocher drawing applied on a mammoth's skull which has been discovered at the Mezhyrich Paleolithic site, has led us to suggest its new interpretation – the drawing reflects an utterly stylized reproduction of a mammoth. The style of the drawing (acute angles) as well as the specific Mezhyrich décor (chevrons, rhombus) are probably based on the V-shaped lower jaw of mammoths which might have been associated with the “female's” triangle. The drawing of a mammoth has been implemented in the manner of “flattened untwisted reproduction” of its two profile projections – that is the method to create a 3-D image on a flat surface.  相似文献

A relationship between medium composition and the opposite photoperiodic responses of L. perpusilla 6746 and L. gibba G3. Amer. Jour. Bot. 48(5): 413–419. Illus. 1961.—In a simple Hoagland-type medium, L. perpusilla 6746 flowers, irrespective of daylength; L. gibba G3 does not flower under any daylength, as long as the medium is changed frequently. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) prevents the flowering of L. perpusilla in long days but not in short, and brings about the flowering of L. gibba in long days but not in short. The same results are obtained with medium “aged” by the growth in it of L. gibba for several weeks (in any photoperiod) as well as with tartaric acid. The effectiveness of both EDTA and “aged” medium is greater at pH levels near 5 than at 4 or below, probably reflecting action through metal-chelation. These results are most easily interpreted as effects on photoperiodic sensitivity, and suggest a central role of metals in photoperiodism.  相似文献

There are nine “giant vertical” neurons in the lobula plate of the fly optic lobe. Intracellular recordings were obtained from the three most peripheral of these cells. These cells respond to a light flash with graded changes in the membrane potential. The response consists of an “on” transient, a sustained depolarization, an increase in membrane potential fluctuations, and an “off” transient. Signal averaging showed that only the “on” and “off” transients are correlated to the stimulus. A pattern of horizontally oriented stripes moving in the vertical direction evokes a response larger than the response to a stationary pattern. The response is most sensitive to vertical movement; motion in the downward direction evokes a net membrane potential depolarization, and upward motion results in a net hyperpolarization. We conclude that the giant vertical cells function primarily as vertical motion detectors and that the direction of the motion is encoded in the polarity of the shift in the membrane potential.  相似文献

PurposeTo develop a real-time alignment monitoring system (RAMS) to compensate for the limitations of the conventional room-laser-based alignment system. To verify the feasibility of the RAMS, reproducibility and accuracy tests were conducted.MethodsRAMS was composed of a room laser sensing array (RLSA), an electric circuit, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and a control PC. The RLSA was designed to arrange photodiodes in a pattern that results in the RAMS having a resolution of 1 mm. The photodiodes were used for quantitative assessment of the alignment condition. To verify the usability of the developed system, we conducted tests of temporal reproducibility, repeatability, and accuracy.ResultsThe results of the temporal reproducibility test suggested that the signal of the RAMS was stable with respect to time. Further, the repeatability test resulted in a maximum coefficient of variance of 1.14%, suggesting that the signal of the RAMS was stable over repeated set-ups. The accuracy test confirmed that the “on” and “off” signals could be distinguished by signal intensity, considering that the “off” signal was below 75% of the “on” signal in every case. In addition, we confirmed that the system can detect 1 mm of movement by monitoring the pattern of the “on” and “off” signals.ConclusionWe developed a room laser based alignment monitoring system. The feasibility test verified that the system is capable of quantitative alignment monitoring in real time. We expect that the RAMS can propose the potential of the room laser based alignment monitoring method.  相似文献

Govindjee (one name only), who himself is an institution, has been recognized and honored by many in the past for he is a true ambassador of “Photosynthesis Research” to the World. He has been called “Mr. Photosynthesis”, and compared to the Great Wall of China. To us in T?eboň, he has been a great research collaborator in our understanding of chlorophyll a fluorescence in algae and in cyanobacteria, and more than that a friend of the Czech “Photosynthesis” group, from the time of Ivan ?etlík (1928–2009) and of Zdeněk ?esták (1932–2008). Govindjee’s 80th (really 81st) birthday was celebrated by the Institute of Microbiology, Laboratory of Photosynthesis, by toasting him with an appropriate drink of a suspension of green algae grown at the institute itself. After my presentation, on October 23, 2013, of Govindjee’s contributions to photosynthesis, and his intimate association with the photosynthetikers (in Jack Myers’s words) of the Czech Republic, Govindjee gave us his story of how he began research in photosynthesis in the late 1950s. This was followed by a talk on October 25 by him on “Photosynthesis: Stories of the Past.” Everyone enjoyed his animated talk—it was full of life and enjoyment. Here, I present a brief pictorial essay on Govindjee at his 80th (really 81st) birthday in T?eboň during October 23–25, 2013.  相似文献

Maternal inheritance of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was originally thought to prevent any response to selection on male phenotypic variation attributable to mtDNA, resulting in a male‐biased mtDNA mutation load (“mother's curse”). However, the theory underpinning this claim implicitly assumes that a male's mtDNA has no effect on the fitness of females he comes into contact with. If such “mitochondrially encoded indirect genetics effects” (mtIGEs) do in fact exist, and there is relatedness between the mitochondrial genomes of interacting males and females, male mtDNA‐encoded traits can undergo adaptation after all. We tested this possibility using strains of Drosophila melanogaster that differ in their mtDNA. Our experiments indicate that female fitness is influenced by the mtDNA carried by males that the females encounter, which could plausibly allow the mitochondrial genome to evolve via kin selection. We argue that mtIGEs are probably common, and that this might ameliorate or exacerbate mother's curse.  相似文献
