The elastic behaviors of stratum corneum, viable epidermis, dermis, and whole skin were investigated by nano/microindentation techniques. Insignificant differences in reduced elastic modulus of skin samples obtained from three different porcine breeds revealed breed type independent measurements. The reduced elastic modulus of stratum corneum is shown to be about three orders of magnitude higher than that of dermis. As a result, for relatively shallow and deep indentations, skin elasticity is controlled by that of stratum corneum and dermis, respectively. Skin deformation is interpreted in the context of a layered structure model consisting of a stiff and hard surface layer on a compliant and soft substrate, supported by microscopy observations and indentation measurements.  相似文献

The morphological characteristics of the dorsal skin of trunk in two species of hynobiid salamanders, Batrachuperus pinchonii and Hynobius chinensis were examined by light microscopy. The basic structures of the skin in the two species are similar and consist of two layers: epidermis and dermis. The epidermis consists of stratum corneum, stratum intermedium and stratum germinativum, while the dermis is composed of a stratum spongiosum and stratum compactum. However, some species-specific variation has been identified(e.g., the distribution of capillary vessels and gland cells, and the thickness of skin). H. chinensis is a terrestrial species and only lives in water during breeding period, but B. pinchonii is aquatic and remains aquatic throughout its lifetime. The differences in the distribution of capillary vessels and gland cells are related to their different habitats, and show a morphological adaptation.  相似文献

Most birds develop brood patches before incubation; epidermis and dermis in the brood patch region thicken, and the dermal connective tissue becomes increasingly vascularized and infiltrated by leukocytes. However, current dogma states that waterfowl incubate without modifications of skin within the brood patch region. The incubation periods of lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens; hereafter called snow geese) and Ross’s geese (C. rossii) are 2–6 days shorter than those of other goose species; only females incubate. Thus, we hypothesized that such short incubation periods would require fully developed brood patches for sufficient heat transfer from incubating parents to eggs. We tested this hypothesis by analyzing the skin histology of abdominal regions of snow and Ross’s geese collected at Karrak Lake, Nunavut, Canada. For female snow geese, we found that epidermis and dermis had thickened and vascularization of dermis was 14 times greater, on average, than that observed in males (n=5 pairs). Our results for Ross’s geese (n=5 pairs) were more variable, wherein only one of five female Ross’s geese fully developed a brood patch. Our results are consistent with three hypotheses about brood patch development and its relationship with different energetic cost–benefit relationships, resulting from differences in embryonic development and body size.  相似文献

The dorsal and ventral skin in amphibians plays an important role in osmoregulation. Prolactin hormone is involved in regulation of amphibian skin functions, such as water and electrolyte balance. Therefore, amphibians may be useful as a model for determining the sites of the prolactin receptor. In this study, prolactin receptor was detected in frog dorsal and ventral skin using immunohistochemical staining method. Prolactin receptor immunoreactivity was localized in all epidermal layers except stratum corneum of dorsal skin epidermis, stratum germinativum layer of ventral skin epidermis, myoepithelial cells, secretory epithelium and secretory channel cells of granular glands in both skin regions. The mucous glands and secretory granules of granular glands did not show immunoreactivity for the prolactin receptor. According to our immunohistochemical results, the more widespread detection of prolactin receptor in dorsal skin epidermis indicates that prolactin is more effective in dorsal skin. Presence of prolactin receptors in epidermis points out its possible osmoregulatory effect. Moreover, detection of receptor immunoreactivity in various elements of poison glands in the dermis of both dorsal and ventral skin regions suggests that prolactin has a regulatory effect in gland functions.  相似文献

Xenobalanus globicipitis, a unique type of small pseudo‐stalked barnacle occurs on the appendages of cetaceans, including the common bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus. In this study, we examined attachment structures of X. globicipitis and modifications to the skin of T. truncatus in areas of attachment compared to skin nearby an attachment site. Barnacles and their six calcareous footplates were measured for their length and width. There was a positive correlation of barnacle width and length to footplate width and length. The thickness of the stratum corneum increased significantly in areas of attachment compared to skin nearby a footplate. The mitotic stratum germinativum at the base of the dermal papillae did not change significantly in areas of attachment compared to skin nearby a footplate. The stratum germinativum lining the lateral walls of the dermal papillae was significantly thicker in areas of skin nearby a footplate compared to in areas of attachment. Skin of T. truncatus nearby a footplate, displayed dermal papillae extending from the dermis and pointing roughly perpendicular to the epidermal stratum corneum. At sites of X. globicipitis attachment, the dermal papillae were forced to extend laterally, parallel to the stratum corneum, and the dermal papillae length to width ratio at an attachment site was significantly higher than on skin near an attachment site. Our results show that attachment of X. globicipitis through production of footplates organized into calcareous rings, leads to a thickened stratum corneum of the epidermis, a thinner lateral mitotic stratum germinativum and displaced structures of the upper dermis. These resulting modifications to the epidermis and dermis of the host may add to securing barnacle attachment to its host. J. Morphol., 2012. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to describe the histological structure of the skin of greater rhea (Rhea americana), a ratite bird native to South America. Skin samples were taken from three regions of the trunk (alar, dorsal and pelvic) in 14 specimens which ages ranged from 7 days to adulthood. Serial sections were obtained and subjected to different staining procedures (haematoxylin and eosin, orcein, Masson's trichrome and Gomori), and a morphometric analysis was carried out on stained slides. In general, both epidermis and dermis showed increased thickness of its layers with age. Some differences between regions can be detected both in epidermis and in dermis; for example in adults and 7‐day‐old birds, the stratum corneum of the alar region was thicker than of the dorsal region. In general, the skin of greater rhea was similar to that described in ratites and other birds (a thin epidermis compared to dermis, dermis with scarce elastic fibres, a slender and vascularized stratum superficiale, collagen fibres arranged in three directions). The scarcity of elastic fibres and the general cross‐weaved arrangement of the collagen fibres in the dermis of the adult greater rhea provide strength and flexibility to the dermis, two important features in leather industry.  相似文献

The thermoregulatory function of the skin differs in adult cold-acclimated and heat-acclimated rock pigeons (Columba livia). In general, the cutaneous evaporative cooling mechanism is not activated by appropriate stimuli in cold-acclimated pigeons in contrast to heat-acclimated pigeons. We studied with electron microscopy whether the differences in the function of the skin are reflected in the structure of the epidermal water barrier of these two extreme acclimation states. The epidermis of cold-acclimated pigeons is attenuated, and the underlying dermis lacks any intimate vascularization. Both the extracellular and the intracellular domains in the stratum corneum contain organized lamellar lipids. At the stratum transitivum-stratum corneum interface, multigranular body secretion is indicated by the highly convoluted cell membranes and membraneous sacculae enclosing the multigranular bodies. Alternatively, multigranular bodies retain in the corneocytes, and the lipoid material originated from them is reprocessed to broad lamellae. The keratohyalin (KH) granules are spotlike and oriented as cortical bands beneath the plasma membrane. In heat-acclimated pigeons, the epidermis displays modified patches side by side with basic structural type of epidermis. The modified areas are characterized by hypertrophy and abundance of dermal capillaries adjacent to the hypertrophied patch. No lamellar lipids are discerned in the dilated extracellular space. The structure of multigranular bodies is abnormal, and the numbers of lipid droplets in the outer viable epidermis and stratum corneum are decreased. The transitional cells contain stellate KH granules, which form a network throughout the cell. It is concluded that cold-acclimated pigeons have a lamellar, extracellular water barrier, the cutaneous water evaporation is minimized, and heat is stored in the body core. Acclimation to heat leads to formation of structurally heterogeneous skin. The structurally modified skin patches show disruption of the barrier-forming machinery in the multigranular bodies and marked reorganization of fibrillar proteins and electron-dense KH masses in the transitional layer. Thus water barrier adjustments in cold- and heat-acclimated pigeons manifest the dynamic function of avian skin as a thermoregulatory organ.  相似文献

Skin tissue may be engineered in a variety of ways. Our cultured skin substitute (Graftskin, living skin equivalent or G-LSE), Apligraftrade mark, is an organotypic culture of skin, containing both a "dermis" and "epidermis." The epidermis is an important functional component of skin, responsible for biologic wound closure. The epidermis possesses a stratum corneum which develops with time in culture. The stratum corneum provides barrier function properties and gives the LSE improved strength and handling characteristics. Clinical experience indicated that the stratum corneum might play an important role in improving the clinical utility of the LSE. Handling and physical characteristics improved with time in culture. We examined the LSE at different stages of epidermal maturation for barrier function and ability to persist as a graft. LSE grafted onto athymic mice before significant development of barrier function did not withstand bandage removal at 7 days postgraft. LSE grafted after barrier function had been established in vitro were able to withstand bandage removal at day 7. Corneum lipid composition and structure are critical components for barrier function. Media modifications were used in an attempt to improve the fatty acid composition of the stratum corneum. The barrier developed more rapidly and was improved in a serum-free, lipid-supplemented condition. Lipid lamellar structure was improved with 10% of the stratum corneum exhibiting broad-narrow-broad lipid lamellar arrangements similar to human skin. Fatty acid metabolism was not appreciably altered. Barrier function in vitro was 4- to 10-fold more permeable than human skin. Epidermal differentiation does not compromise engraftment or the wound healing ability of the epidermis. The stratum corneum provides features beneficial for engraftment and clinical use. Time-dependent deformation of porcine skin was studied in vitro using specialized microprobe instruments. The deformation behavior of stratum corneum, dermis, and whole skin is examined in the context of results of creep strain, elastic stiffness, and viscoelastic constants obtained in terms of the hold time, loading/unloading rate, and maximum indentation depth (load). Skin time-dependent deformation is significantly influenced by dermis viscoelasticity up to a critical indentation depth (load) beyond which it is controlled by the outermost hard epidermis, particularly stratum corneum. Skin viscoelastic behavior under constant load (creep) and constant displacement (stress relaxation) is interpreted in the light of phenomenological observations and experimental trends.  相似文献

The morphological origin of the dark and pink‐orange areas in the skin of the venomous lizard Heloderma suspectum is not known. Histology and electron microscopy show that dark‐grey areas of the skin derived from dermal chromatophores localized in specific areas present underneath the epidermis. A dynamic chromatophoric unit in the dermis is absent. In the darkest areas of the skin, the accumulation of melanosomes in cells of the beta‐layer contributes to increase the black intensity. In the orange‐pink areas, the superficial dermis contains xantophores storing numerous carotenoid vesicles, rare or absent lamellated pterinosomes and a variable number of melanosomes. These xanto‐melanophores predominate over the remaining chromatophores and form a continuous stratum underneath the epidermis. Beneath this lipoid‐rich stratum, iridophores are infrequent and do not form a continuous layer in the dermis. In the paler areas of the skin, melanophores are sparse in both superficial and deeper part of the dermis where irregularly oriented bundles of collagen fibrils are present. The prevalent xanto‐melanophores localized in the pink‐orange areas of the skin contribute to an effective sunlight protection in desert conditions in addition to the darker regions occupied by melanophores.  相似文献

Conspecific brood parasitism (CBP) is a reproductive tactic whereby a parasitic female lays its eggs into the nests of other conspecific females. Genetic‐based data on the occurrence of CBP in birds, however, is still relatively scarce. We analysed prevalence of CBP in a ground‐nesting diving duck, the common pochard Aythya ferina, using a set of 17 microsatellites. Compared to related species, our population showed a relatively high level of CBP, with 39% of genotyped pochard eggs laid parasitically and 89% of nests containing ≥ 1 parasitic egg. In addition, we observed relatively high rates of interspecific brood parasitism (13% of eggs), caused predominantly by mallard Anas plathyrhynchos and tufted duck Aythya fuligula. CBP eggs had decreased hatching success compared to host eggs, with 65% of CBP and 95% of non‐CBP genotyped eggs hatching successfully. Our data suggest that this was probably due to improper timing of parasitic egglaying, which compromised synchronised hatching of CBP and host‐eggs. Despite high rates of CBP in our pochard popu lation, fitness costs associated with this reproductive tactic appear to be low for host females since neither clutch size nor host‐egg hatching probability were reduced due to CBP.  相似文献

Transdermal pathways and targets in the skin for estradiol were investigated using dry-mount autoradiography. 3H-estradiol-17 beta was applied at doses of 30.1 pmol, 120.4 pmol and 301 pmol/cm2 to shaved rat skin in the dorsal neck region. Vehicles were DMSO, ethylene glycol or sesame oil. After 2 h of topical treatment with 30.1 pmol 3H-estradiol x cm-2 dissolved in DMSO a distinct cellular distribution was apparent. Target cells with concentrations of radioactivity were found in epidermis, sebaceous glands, dermal papillae of hair and fibroblasts. After treatment with 120.4 and 301 pmol/cm2, a penetration gradient of radioactivity was recognizable however it masked specific cellular and subcellular uptake. The stratum corneum accumulated and retained radioactivity, apparently forming a depot for the hormone. Strong concentration and retention of the hormone was conspicuous in sebaceous glands for more than 24 h, suggesting that sebaceous glands serve as a second storage site for the hormone. In all autoradiograms two penetration pathways to the dermis were visible: one through the stratum corneum and epidermis, the other through the hair canals and hair sheaths.  相似文献

The giant water bug Appasus major exhibits a peculiar reproductive behavior where females lay eggs on the backs of males. A male and female pair performs frequent repeat copulations during the oviposition behavior, and the male carries the deposited eggs until hatching. Such characteristic behaviors predict that the eggs are fertilized by the brooding males. If males carry eggs of other unrelated males, the egg carrying will drastically decrease the fitness of the carriers. In this study, we examined genetic relationships between the 489 eggs and nine males carrying them collected from the field, using microsatellite DNA markers. We revealed that in total, 28.4% of the eggs were of other male origin. This is the first report of frequent brood parasitism in an aquatic egg‐carrying hemipteran insect. The brood parasitism is adaptive for the females probably because it enables them to increase the chance of oviposition, or it can equalize motility risk of the eggs of each mate.  相似文献

Filial cannibalism occurs in a variety of taxa, especially in fish exhibit paternal care. In the Apogonidae, males mouthbrood a cohesive mass of eggs received from a single female, although the males frequently eat the entire brood. It has been recognized that a primary factor concerning entire brood cannibalism is the brood size produced by females, as the parent eats a small egg mass so long as the reproductive return does not exceed the cost of providing care. In Apogon lineatus, approximately 18% of each brood was occupied by abnormal eggs lacking yolk, which were hydrated without the vitellogenesis phase and eventually ovulated with other normal eggs as a single egg mass. By not providing yolk to some eggs within the brood, A. lineatus females may succeed in producing an apparently large brood, reducing the likelihood of entire brood cannibalism by males.  相似文献

Conspecific brood parasitism (CBP) is an alternative reproductive tactic found in many animals with parental care. Parasitizing females lay eggs in the nests of other females (hosts) of the same species, which incubate and raise both their own and the foreign offspring. The causes and consequences of CBP are debated. Using albumen fingerprinting of eggs for accurately detecting parasitism, we here analyse its relation to female condition and clutch size in High Arctic common eiders Somateria mollissima borealis. Among 166 clutches in a Svalbard colony, 31 (19%) contained eggs from more than one female, and 40 of 670 eggs (6%) were parasitic. In 6 cases an active nest with egg(s) was taken over by another female. Many suitable nest sites were unoccupied, indicating that CBP and nest takeover are reproductive tactics, not only consequences of nest site shortage. Similarity in body mass between female categories suggests that condition does not determine whether a nesting female becomes parasitised. There was no evidence of low condition in parasites: egg size was similar in hosts and parasites, and parasitism was equally frequent early and late in the laying season. Meta‐analysis of this and 3 other eider studies shows that there is a cost of being parasitised in this precocial species: host females laid on average 7% fewer eggs than other females.  相似文献

When size‐dependent contests over resources influence reproductive success, the trade‐off between number and size of offspring depends on the frequency of contests. Under these circumstances, clutch size should decrease and offspring size should increase as contests become more frequent. We tested these predictions with the burying beetle Nicrophorus pustulatus through manipulation of rearing densities. Burying beetles reproduce on small vertebrate carcasses, a rare but high quality food source for the larvae. Large beetles are more likely to win contests over carcasses and gain exclusive access to a carcass. The winner of a contest kills eggs and larvae already present on a carcass. As a result of the rarity of carcasses, burying beetles are unlikely to breed more than once. As predicted, brood size of N. pustulatus decreased with increasing rearing density. Despite a negative correlation between brood size and larval mass, larval mass did not increase with increasing rearing density. This may be due to the special biology of N. pustulatus which can use snake eggs for reproduction. Potentially larger supply of resources and generally small population densities of N. pustulatus may weaken selection on body size and thus the correlation between brood size and larval mass. As size‐dependent constraints can limit reproductive phenotypes, we examined whether female size influenced reproductive phenotype. Small females produced larger broods with smaller, but more variable, offspring than large females. Mechanical constraints of egg size seem an unlikely explanation for the differences because burying beetles can compensate for small egg size through parental care. Energetic constraints may impact small females because body mass and brood size of small females decreased with increasing density. Yet, at all density levels small females produced larger, not smaller, broods than large females. The larger and more variable broods of small females seem to be in agreement with a bet‐hedging strategy.  相似文献

Intraclutch egg size variation may non‐adaptively result from nutritional/energetic constraints acting on laying females or may reflect adaptive differential investment in offspring in relation to laying/hatching order. This variation may contribute to size hierarchies among siblings already established due to hatching asynchrony, and resultant competitive asymmetries often lead to starvation of the weakest nestling within a brood. The costs in terms of chick mortality can be high. However, the extent to which this mortality is egg size‐mediated remains unclear, especially in relation to hatching asynchrony which may operate concomitantly. I assessed effects of egg size and hatching asynchrony on nestling development and survival of Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus), where the smaller size and later hatching of c‐eggs may represent a brood‐reduction strategy. To analyze variation in egg size, I recorded the laying order and laying date of 870 eggs in 290 three‐egg clutches over a 3‐yr period (2010–2012). I measured hatchlings and monitored growth and survival of 130 chicks from enclosed nests in 2011 and 2012. The negative effect of laying date (β = ?0.18 ± SE 0.06, P = 0.002) on c‐egg size possibly reflected the fact that late breeders were either low quality or inexperienced females. The mass, size, and condition of hatchling Herring Gulls were positively related to egg size (all P < 0.0001). C‐chicks suffered from increased mortality risk during the first 12 d, identified as the brood‐reduction period in my study population. Although intraclutch variation in egg size was not directly related to patterns of chick mortality, I found that smaller relative egg size interactively increased differences in relative body condition of nestlings, primarily brought about by the degree of hatching asynchrony during this brood‐reduction period. Thus, the value of relatively small c‐eggs in Herring Gulls may lie in reinforcing brood reduction through effects on nestling body condition. A reproductive strategy Herring Gulls might have adopted to maintain a three‐egg clutch, but that also enables them to adjust the number of chicks they rear relative to the prevailing environmental conditions and to their own condition during the nestling stage.  相似文献

Frozen longitudinal skin sections taken from the dorsal thoraco-lumbar region of adult Merino sheep that were infested with the sheep-chewing louse were examined by light microscopy. The epidermis of infested sheep exhibited acanthosis due to hyperplasia of the stratum spinosum, and orthokeratosis. The thickness of the uncornified epidermis, the stratum corneum, and the sudanophilic region were significantly greater (P less than 0.005) than equivalent regions in louse-free Merinos and the results suggest that a positive correlation exists between the thickness of each region and the level of louse infestation. The results indicate that the variance in region thickness was greater in lousy than in louse-free sheep (P less than 0.005).  相似文献

Conspecific brood parasitism (CBP), females laying eggs in the nest of other ‘host’ females of the same species, is a common alternative reproductive tactic among birds. For hosts there are likely costs of incubating and rearing foreign offspring, but costs may be low in species with precocial chicks such as waterfowl, among which CBP is common. Waterfowl show strong female natal philopatry, and spatial relatedness among females may influence the evolution of CBP. Here we investigate fine‐scale kin structure in a Baltic colony of barnacle geese, Branta leucopsis, estimating female spatial relatedness using protein fingerprints of egg albumen, and testing the performance of this estimator in known mother‐daughter pairs. Relatedness was significantly higher between neighbour females (nesting ≤ 40 metres from each other) than between females nesting farther apart, but there was no further distance trend in relatedness. This pattern may be explained by earlier observations of females nesting close to their mother or brood sisters, even when far from the birth nest. Hosts and parasites were on average not more closely related than neighbour females. In 25 of 35 sampled parasitized nests, parasitic eggs were laid after the host female finished laying, too late to develop and hatch. Timely parasites, laying eggs in the host’s laying sequence, had similar relatedness to hosts as that between neighbours. Females laying late parasitic eggs tended to be less related to the host, but not significantly so. Our results suggest that CBP in barnacle geese might represent different tactical life‐history responses.  相似文献

We studied egg‐pecking behaviour in males and females of three cowbird species: the shiny cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis), a host generalist brood parasite, the screaming cowbird (M. rufoaxillaris), a host specialist brood parasite, and the bay‐winged cowbird (Agelaioides badius), a non‐parasitic species. We conducted three experiments in which we offered each bird an artificial nest with two plaster eggs and recorded whether egg pecking occurred and the number of pecks on each egg. In expt 1, we tested if there were species and sex differences in egg‐pecking behaviour by offering the birds two spotted eggs of similar pattern. Shiny and screaming cowbirds responded in 40.3% and 44% of the trials, respectively, with females and males presenting similar levels of response. In contrast, bay‐winged cowbirds did not show any response. In expt 2, we tested if shiny cowbirds responded differentially when they faced a choice between one host and one shiny cowbird egg, while in expt 3, we tested if screaming cowbirds responded differentially when they faced a choice between one shiny and one screaming cowbird egg. Shiny cowbirds pecked preferentially host eggs while screaming cowbirds pecked more frequently shiny cowbird eggs. Our results show that egg‐pecking behaviour is present in both sexes of parasitic cowbirds, but not in non‐parasitic birds, and that parasitic cowbirds can discriminate between eggs of their own species and the eggs of their hosts or other brood parasites.  相似文献
