Malignant hyperthermia: human stress triggering

Letter to the Editor concerns the question of a discussion of awake porcine malignant hyperthermia that erroneously omits the awake human stress reaction of malignant hyperthermia.

Answer to “Reevaluation of the conclusion that IRES-activity reported within the 5′ leader of the TIF4631 gene is due to promoter activity”

The accuracy of the data we reported in an RNA Letter to the Editor earlier this year on the promoter activity within the 5′ leader of the TIF4631 gene is questioned by V.P. Mauro and others in this issue. We reply here that we see no inaccuracy in our data.     

Latent splice sites and stop codons revisited

The accuracy of the data we reported in an RNA Letter to the Editor earlier this year on the possible relationship between stop codons and splicing is questioned by Miriami et al. (this issue). We reply here that we see no inaccuracy in our data presentation and offer a possible explanation for their interpretation.     

Spotlight on phytochrome nomenclature

These recommendations for genes encoding phytochromes were developed independently by Quail et al., but are broadly consistent with the Commission's guidelines. Their original article, kindly provided in advance of publication, appeared as a Letter to the Editor inPlant Cell (6:468–471, 1994) and is published with permission of the American Society of Plant Physiologists.     

Letter to the editor: Current progress in patient-specific modeling by Neal and Kerckhoffs (2010)

A recent review article on 'Current progress in patient-specific modeling' in Briefings in Bioinformatics contains the statement summarizing the results of our previous study 'On the unimportance of constitutive models in computing brain deformation for image-guided surgery' published in Biomechanics and Modeling in Mechanobiology as confirmation of adequacy of linear elastic model for such computation. The purpose of this Letter to the Editor is to clarify this statement by informing the Readers of Briefings in Bioinformatics that our study indicates the following: (i) a simple linear elastic constitutive model for the brain tissue is sufficient when used with an appropriate finite deformation solution (i.e. geometrically non-linear analysis); and (ii) Linear analysis approach that assumes infinitesimally small brain deformations leads to unrealistic results.

We are responding to a Letter to the Editor addressing the Method section of our paper “Different measures of ‘genome-wide’ DNA methylation exhibit unique properties in placental and somatic tissues.” The letter raised concerns that the protocol for Epigentek’s MethylFlash kit was followed incorrectly based on the wording of an online publication of our article. We admittedly made an error in the language used to describe the MethylFlash protocol in our initial submission and thus this was corrected as soon as it was brought to our attention. However, the error was only in language and not procedure. We are confident that the protocol was followed as stated in the insert provided with the MethylFlash^TM Methylated DNA Quantification kit (Colorimetric).

GOTreePlus: an interactive gene ontology browser

Summary: We developed an interactive gene ontology (GO) browsernamed GOTreePlus that superimposes annotation information overGO structures. It can facilitate the identification of importantGO terms through interactive visualization of them in the GOstructure. The interactive pie chart summarizing an annotationdistribution for a selected GO term provides users with a succinctcontext-sensitive overview of their experimental results. Wetested our GOTreePlus using a proteome profiling dataset obtainedon differentiation of retinal pigment epithelial cells where399 proteins were quantified. Synthesis and biological properties of thiazole-analogues of pyochelin,a siderophore of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Pyochelin is a siderophore common to all strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa utilized by this Gram-negative bacterium to acquire iron(III). FptA is the outer membrane transporter responsible of ferric-pyochelin uptake in P. aeruginosa. We describe in this Letter the synthesis and the biological properties (⁵⁵Fe uptake, binding to FptA) of several thiazole analogues of pyochelin. Among them we report in this Letter the two first pyochelin analogues able to bind FptA without promoting any iron uptake in P. aeruginosa.
