The development of insecticide resistance is becoming a threat to many arboviruses control programs worldwide. While this has been attributed to the indiscriminate use of insecticide, a more theoretical study is apparently not available. Using in-silico experiments, we investigated the effects of two different policies: one used by the Brazilian Ministry of Health (which follows the World Health Organization protocol) and a more permissive one, akin to those employed by various gated communities and private companies. The results show that the public policy does not lead to resistance fixation. On the other hand, permissive application of adulticide, such as intensive domestic use mainly during epidemic periods, might lead to the fixation of a resistant population, even when resistance is associated with moderate fitness costs.  相似文献

Background

The current literature establishes the importance of gene functional category and expression in promoting or suppressing duplicate gene loss after whole genome doubling in plants, a process known as fractionation. Inspired by studies that have reported gene expression to be the dominating factor in preventing duplicate gene loss, we analyzed the relative effect of functional category and expression.

Methods

We use multivariate methods to study data sets on gene retention, function and expression in rosids and asterids to estimate effects and assess their interaction.

Results

Our results suggest that the effect on duplicate gene retention fractionation by functional category and expression are independent and have no statistical interaction.

Conclusion

In plants, functional category is the more dominant factor in explaining duplicate gene loss.

持留菌是细菌群体中一小部分具有表型耐药的细菌。自1944年被发现后,近几十年来因其在慢性持续性感染和生物膜感染中的重要作用而得到越来越多的重视。已有的研究结果表明,细菌持留的机理复杂,涉及的相关信号通路有毒素-抗毒素系统、细胞能量代谢及蛋白核酸合成等生理状态的降低、DNA保护修复系统、蛋白酶系统、反式翻译、外排泵系统等。虽然不同细菌的持留机理有一定的相似性和保守性,但不同细菌的持留机制也存在差异,如毒素-抗毒素系统在大肠埃希菌(Escherichia coli)中的过度激活可导致持留菌增加,但在金黄色葡萄球菌(Staphylococcus aureus)中却并无相同作用。本文从持留菌的研究历史出发,综述了当前对革兰氏阴性菌和阳性菌的持留机制方面的研究进展,同时探讨了在持留菌相关感染疾病方面的治疗策略,以期为更好地解决持留菌带来的问题,缩短治疗时间提供新的思路。  相似文献

The annexins are a family of highly homologous phospholipid binding proteins, which share a four-domain structure, with one member of the family - annexin VI - having a duplication consisting of eight domains. Thus far, ten annexins have been described in mammals. Although the biological functions of the annexins have not been definitively established, two human diseases involving annexin abnormalities ('annexinopathies') have been identified as of the time of writing. Overexpression of annexin II occurs in the leukocytes of a subset of patients having a hemorrhagic form of acute promyelocytic leukemia. Underexpression of annexin V occurs on placental trophoblasts in the antiphospholipid syndrome and in preeclampsia. Also, an animal model has been described in which annexin VII is underexpressed and is associated with disease, but the relevance of this animal model to human disease is not yet understood. Future research is likely to elucidate additional 'annexinopathies'.  相似文献

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is one of most successful pathogens of mankind, infecting one-third of the global population and claiming two million lives every year. The ability of the bacteria to persist in the form of a long-term asymptomatic infection, referred to as latent tuberculosis, is central to the biology of the disease. The persistence of bacteria in superficially normal tissue was recognized soon after the discovery of the tubercle bacillus, and much of our knowledge about persistent populations of M. tuberculosis dates back to the first half of the last century. Recent advances in microbial genetics and host immunity provide an opportunity for renewed investigation of this persistent threat to human health.  相似文献

Antibiotics have revolutionized the treatment of infectious disease but have also rapidly selected for the emergence of resistant pathogens. Traditional methods of antibiotic discovery have failed to keep pace with the evolution of this resistance, which suggests that new strategies to combat bacterial infections may be required. An improved understanding of bacterial stress responses and evolution suggests that in some circumstances, the ability of bacteria to survive antibiotic therapy either by transiently tolerating antibiotics or by evolving resistance requires specific biochemical processes that may themselves be subject to intervention. Inhibiting these processes may prolong the efficacy of current antibiotics and provide an alternative to escalating the current arms race between antibiotics and bacterial resistance. Though these approaches are not clinically validated and will certainly face their own set of challenges, their potential to protect our ever-shrinking arsenal of antibiotics merits their investigation. This Review summarizes the early efforts toward this goal.  相似文献

The term species by itself is vague because it refers to the species concept, the species category and the species taxon, all of which are distinct although related to one another. The species concept is not primarily a part of systematics, but has always been an integral part of basic biological theory, It is based on evolutionary theory and applies only to sexually reproducing organisms. The species concept and the phyletic lineage concept are quite distinct although they are related to one another. The important aspect of the species concept is lack of gene flow between different species, and hence the defining criterion of the species is genetic isolation. The species concept is often considered as non‐dimensional, both in time and space. Species possess three different major properties, namely genetic isolation, reproductive isolation and ecological isolation; these properties evolve at different times and under the effect of different causes during the speciation process. Speciation requires an external isolating barrier during the initial allopatric phase in which genetic isolation evolves and must reach 100% efficiency. The subsequent sympatric phase of speciation occurs after the disappearance of the external isolating barrier when members of the two newly evolved species can interact with one another and exert mutual selective demands on one another. Much of the reproductive and ecological isolation evolves during this secondary sympatric phase. The species category is a rank in the taxonomic hierarchy and serves as the basis on which the diversity of organisms is described; it is not the same as the species concept. The species category applied to all organisms, sexually and asexually reproducing. The species taxon is the practical application of the species category in systematics with the recognition of species taxa requiring many arbitrary decisions. No single set of rules exist by which the species category can be applied to all organisms. Recognition of species taxa in asexually reproducing organisms is based on amount of variation and gaps in the variation of phenotypic features associated with ecological attributes of these organisms as compared with similar attributes in sympatric species taxa of sexually reproducing organisms. Species taxa are multidimensional in that they exist over space–time and often have fuzzy borders. Because recognition of species taxa, including those in sexually reproducing organisms, depends on many arbitrary decisions especially when dealing with broad geographical and temporal ranges, species taxa cannot be used as the foundation for developing and testing theoretical concepts in evolutionary theory which can only be done with the non‐dimensional species concept.  相似文献

At first glance, obligatory reduplication of monosyllabic lexemes in Kharia appears to be a means of deriving nouns and adjectives from verbs (cf. e.g. Abbi 1985, 1992; Biligiri 1965;76f.; Malhotra 1982) which originates from an earlier phonological constraint requiring all phonological words to be bisyllabic/bimoraic (Anderson and Zide 2002). As we argue in this study, however, although from a diachronic perspective reduplication in Kharia undoubtedly derives from a bisyllabic constraint on phonological words, a purely phonological analysis, as well as one in which reduplication merely serves to derive nouns or adjectives from verbs, is inadequate in our view, as reduplication is used to form the masdar, a grammatical category fulfilling a number of different functions: While the main or unmarked function of the masdar is undoubtedly secondary predication, it is also found in a highly marked construction in primary predication, where the bisyllabic constraint is actually redundant, as all primary predicates are at least bisyllabic even without reduplication. This analysis also differs from most studies dealing with reduplication in that the original function of what Inkelas and Zoll (2005) refer to as “morphological reduplication” was not semantic but rather purely phonological.  相似文献

AIMS: Monitoring of microbial changes during and after application of various disinfection treatments in a model domestic water system. METHODS AND RESULTS: A pilot-scale domestic water system consisting of seven galvanized steel re-circulation loops and copper dead legs was constructed. Culture techniques, confocal laser scanning microscopy after fluorescent in situ hybridization and viability staining with the BacLight LIVE/DEAD kit were used for planktonic and biofilm flora monitoring. Before starting the treatments, the system was highly contaminated with Legionella pneumophila and biofilm populations mainly consisted of beta-proteobacteria. In the water and the biofilm of the loops, continuous application of chlorine dioxide (0.5 mg l(-1)), or chlorine (2.5 mg l(-1)) were very effective in reducing the microbial flora, including L. pneumophila. Heterotrophic bacteria, although strongly reduced, were still detectable after ozone application (0.5 mg l(-1)), whereas with monochloramine (0.5 mg l(-1)) and copper-silver ionization (0.8/0.02 mg l(-1)), the contamination remained significantly higher. Monochloramine and copper-silver did not remove the biofilm. During copper-silver application, Legionella re-growth was observed. Only chlorine dioxide led to detectable effects in the dead leg. Amoebae could not be eliminated, and after interrupting the treatments, L. pneumophila quickly recovered their initial levels, in all cases. CONCLUSIONS: Chlorine dioxide, applied as a continuous treatment, was identified in this study as the most efficient for controlling L. pneumophila in a domestic water system. Chlorine dioxide showed a longer residual activity, leading to improved performance in the dead leg. Amoebae resisted to all the treatments applied and probably acted as reservoirs for L. pneumophila, allowing a quick re-colonization of the system once the treatments were interrupted. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Control of microbial contamination requires maintenance of a constant disinfectant residual throughout the water system. Treatment strategies targeting free-living amoebae should lead to improved control of L. pneumophila. Such treatment strategies still have to be investigated.  相似文献

Disturbances and propagule pressure are key mechanisms in plant community resistance to invasion, as well as persistence of invasions. Few studies, however, have experimentally tested the interaction of these two mechanisms. We initiated a study in a southwestern ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.)/bunch grass system to determine the susceptibility of remnant native plant communities to cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.) invasion, and persistence of cheatgrass in invaded areas. We used a 2 × 2 factorial design consisting of two levels of aboveground biomass removal and two levels of reciprocal seeding. We seeded cheatgrass seeds in native plots and a native seed mixture in cheatgrass plots. Two biomass removal disturbances and sowing seeds over 3 years did not reverse cheatgrass dominance in invaded plots or native grass dominance in non-invaded native plots. Our results suggest that two factors dictated the persistence of the resident communities. First, bottlebrush squirreltail (Elymus elymoides (Raf.) Swezey) was the dominant native herbaceous species on the study site. This species is typically a poor competitor with cheatgrass as a seedling, but is a strong competitor when mature. Second, differences in pretreatment levels of plant-available soil nitrogen and phosphorus may have favored the dominant species in each community. Annual species typically require higher levels of plant-available soil nutrients than perennial plants. This trend was observed in the annual cheatgrass community and perennial native community. Our study shows that established plants and soil properties can buffer the influences of disturbance and elevated propagule pressure on cheatgrass invasion.  相似文献

Human racial classification has long been a problem for the discipline of anthropology, but much of the criticism of the race concept has focused on its social and political connotations. The central argument of this paper is that race is not a specifically human problem, but one that exists in evolutionary thought in general. This paper looks at various disciplinary approaches to racial or subspecies classification, extending its focus beyond the anthropological race concept by providing a comparative analysis of the use of racial classification in evolutionary biology, genetics, and anthropology.  相似文献

The paper examines the admissions practices of the German Society for Racial Hygiene (Gesellschaft für Rassenhygiene) between 1905 and 1916. It assesses the Society’s changing statutes and the various charts (genealogical, anthropological, and clinical) used to vet prospective members. The Society’s admissions procedures were dual-use technologies, at once serving as evidence for both the larger goals of racial science research and the narrower aims of social inclusion/exclusion. But these procedures can also be interpreted as reflexive practices by which members fashioned their sense of racial self and cultivated relations to that self. Finally, the article situates these practices in the context of histories of human experimentation, the self, and biopolitics.  相似文献

The concept and schema of race continue to exert a major influence on studies of human biology. The racial paradigm informs evolutionary studies in spite of evidence indicating that categories based on external phenotype are not valid. Racial thinking is especially prevalent in studies of Africa. It persists in defiance of genetic data that deconstruct such thinking, probably as a result of the sociocultural milieu, linger research traditions, and a lack of appreciation of the implications of modem genetic studies.  相似文献

A human ecosystem model, NUÑOA, simulates the yearly energy balance of individuals, families, and extended families in a hypothetical farming and herding community of Quechua Indians in the high Andes. The yearly energy demand of each family, based on the caloric requirements of its members, is computed by simulation of agricultural and herding activities in response to stochastic environmental conditions. The family energy balance is used in determining births, deaths, marriages, and resource sharing. The model user has the opportunity to investigate the effect of changes in marriage patterns, resource sharing patterns, or subsistence activities on the ability of the human population to survive in the harsh Andean environment. Results from the model suggest that the substructuring of a population into extended families provides a mechanism for sheltering the population from control by exogenous influences. It has frequently been assumed that the persistence of a deleterious mutation (the average number of generations before its loss) and its pervasiveness (the average number of individuals carrying the gene before its loss) are equal. This is true for a particular simple, widely used infinite model, but this agreement is not general. If hs > 1/(4N(e)), where hs is the selective disadvantage of mutant heterozygotes and N(e) is the effective population number, the contribution of homozygous mutants can be neglected and the simple approximate formula 1/hs gives the mean pervasiveness. But the expected persistence is usually much smaller, 2(log(e)(1/2hs) + 1 - gamma) where gamma = 0.5772. For neutral mutations, the total number of heterozygotes until fixation or loss is often the quantity of interest, and its expected value is 2N(e), with remarkable generality for various population structures. In contrast, the number of generations until fixation or loss, 2(N(e)/N)(1 + log(e)2N), is much smaller than the total number of heterozygotes.
