Nuclear genes that appear to encode both cytosolic and plastid isozymes of phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI), an essential glycolytic enzyme, have been isolated from three diploid species of the annual wild flower genus Clarkia (Onagraceae). The genes do not contain introns and are expressed to varying degrees in Escherichia coli when cloned in either Charon 35 phage or pUC plasmid vectors. The PGI proteins synthesized in E. coli form dimers, are catalytically active, and their electrophoretic mobilities are similar to those of appropriate Clarkia PGIs. The nucleotide sequence of a gene encoding a plastid isozyme of C. unguiculata is described.  相似文献

The phytohormone jasmonic acid (JA) plays a core role in plant defence against herbivores. When attacked by herbivores, JA and its bioactive derivatives are accumulated at the damage site, and subsequently perceived by the jasmonate co-receptors COI1 and JAZ proteins. The (+)-7-iso-jasmonoyl-L-isoleucine (JA-Ile) is known to be the main active JA derivative controlling vascular plant responses to herbivores as well as other JA-regulated processes. However, whether other endogenous JA-amino acid conjugates (JA-AAs) are involved in herbivore-induced defence responses remain unknown. Here, we investigated the role of herbivore-elicited JA-AAs in the crop plant rice. The levels of five JA-AAs were significantly increased under the armyworm, leaf folder and brown planthopper attack. Of the elicited JA derivatives, JA-Ile, JA-Val and JA-Leu could serve as ligands to promote the interaction between rice COI1 and JAZs, inducing OsJAZ4 degradation in vivo. JA-Val or JA-Leu treatment increased the expression of JA- and defence-related pathway genes but not JA-Ile levels, suggesting that these JA-AAs may directly function in JA signalling. Furthermore, the application of JA-Val or JA-Leu resulted in JA-mediated plant growth inhibition, while enhancing plant resistance to herbivore attack. This study uncovers that JA-Val and JA-Leu also play a role in rice defence against herbivores.  相似文献

Aims Geographic patterns of the intensity of plant herbivory in relation to climate factors have garnered little general support and appear to be species specific. However, plant–herbivore interactions are also driven by resource availability, such as soil nutrient content, and it remains unclear whether broad-scale variation in soil factors is reflected in herbivore consumption rates across species’ ranges. Additionally, we know little of how intraspecific variation in tissue quality associates with edaphic and climatic factors, and how this variation controls herbivore consumption. The resource availability hypothesis (RAH) predicts that plant individuals growing in low-resource environments will have lower leaf nutritional quality and more constitutive defenses, which will result in lower rates of leaf consumption.  相似文献

Interactions between plants and their herbivores are often multidimensional, complicating interpretation of herbivore‐impact studies. A previous study, directed toward understanding variation in incidences of flower bud abscission among cotton plants attacked by Lygus plant bugs, revealed an unanticipated correlation between levels of phosphorus nutrition and the propensity of plants to abscise developing flower buds. Here, we further investigate the relationship between phosphorus nutrition and cotton [Gossypium hirsutum Tod. (Malvaceae)] plant responses to herbivory by tarnished plant bugs, Lygus hesperus Knight (Hemiptera: Miridae). Complementary experimental approaches and survey data both suggest that levels of phosphorus nutrition falling within the normal range of variation can influence the manner by which plants respond to herbivory. In particular, higher levels of phosphorus nutrition resulted in elevated bud abscission rates when buds were damaged. Interestingly, increased levels of abscission under high‐phosphorus regimes did not translate into a decrease in overall cotton lint yield, suggesting that the ‘phosphorus effect’ may ultimately reflect how environmentally contingent differences in the allocation of vegetative vs. reproductive investments can provide parallel pathways to equal yields.  相似文献

Mutualistic interactions are dynamic associations that vary depending on the costs and benefits to each of the interacting parties. Phenotypic plasticity in mutualistic interactions allows organisms to produce rewards to attract mutualists when the benefits of their presence outweigh the costs of producing the rewards. In ant–plant defensive mutualisms, defences are indirect as plants produce extra‐floral nectaries (EFN) to attract predatory ants to deter herbivores. Here we demonstrate that in broad bean, Vicia faba, the overall number of EFNs on a plant increases dramatically following leaf damage. In two damage treatments, removal of: (1) one‐third of one leaf in a single leaf pair or (2) one‐third of both halves of a single leaf pair, resulted in a 59 and 106% increase in the number of EFNs on the plants, respectively, over 1 week. We suggest that the increased production of visually conspicuous EFNs is an adaptive inducible response, to attract predatory arthropods when risk of herbivory increases.  相似文献

Plant‐soil feedbacks (PSFs) have been shown to strongly affect plant performance under controlled conditions, and PSFs are thought to have far reaching consequences for plant population dynamics and the structuring of plant communities. However, thus far the relationship between PSF and plant species abundance in the field is not consistent. Here, we synthesize PSF experiments from tropical forests to semiarid grasslands, and test for a positive relationship between plant abundance in the field and PSFs estimated from controlled bioassays. We meta‐analyzed results from 22 PSF experiments and found an overall positive correlation (0.12 ≤ r¯ ≤ 0.32) between plant abundance in the field and PSFs across plant functional types (herbaceous and woody plants) but also variation by plant functional type. Thus, our analysis provides quantitative support that plant abundance has a general albeit weak positive relationship with PSFs across ecosystems. Overall, our results suggest that harmful soil biota tend to accumulate around and disproportionately impact species that are rare. However, data for the herbaceous species, which are most common in the literature, had no significant abundance‐PSFs relationship. Therefore, we conclude that further work is needed within and across biomes, succession stages and plant types, both under controlled and field conditions, while separating PSF effects from other drivers (e.g., herbivory, competition, disturbance) of plant abundance to tease apart the role of soil biota in causing patterns of plant rarity versus commonness.  相似文献

Melissotarsus ants have an extremely specialized set of behaviours. Both workers and gynes tunnel galleries in their host tree bark. Workers walk with their mesothoracic legs pointing upwards and tend Diaspididae hemiptera for their flesh. The ants use their forelegs to plug the galleries with silk that they secrete themselves. We hypothesised that the ants’ energetic needs for nearly constant gallery digging could be satisfied through the absorption of host tree tissues; so, using basic techniques, we examined the digestive capacities of workers from two species. We show that workers are able to degrade oligosaccharides and heterosides as well as, to a lesser degree, polysaccharides. This is one of the rare reports on ants able to digest plant polysaccharides other than starch.  相似文献

丛枝菌根真菌对加拿大一枝黄花生长的影响不受氮形态的调节 越来越多的研究结果表明,入侵植物能通过改变土壤真菌群落直接或间接的促进自身生长。土壤氮含量高低影响植物与丛枝菌根真菌(AMF)的共生关系,进而影响植物生长。然而,氮形态是否会改变入侵植物- 相互作用,以及被改变的AMF群落是否影响入侵植物和本地植物对不同氮形态的依赖性尚未可知。鉴于此,本研究以加拿大一枝黄花(Solidago canadensis)为研究对象,结合野外驯化和室内接种实验,探讨了群落水平上该入侵植物的生长,以及入侵植物-AMF相互作用对不同形态氮添加的响应。首先,选择30对加拿大一枝黄花入侵群落和相近的非入侵群落,并用湿筛法从土壤中获取入侵AMF孢子和非入侵AMF孢子,同时构建两种人工群落:加拿大一枝黄花群落(N = 4)和本地植物群落(N = 4);然后 将入侵和非入侵AMF孢子接种至两种人工群落中,并在生长期间分别供应3种形态氮(NO3-N、NH4-N、Gly-N);生长结束后收获各植物群落地上、地下生物量,测定加拿大一枝黄花的形态特征。研究结果发现,加拿大一枝黄花未表现出显著的氮形态依赖性,本地植物则表现出较弱的氮形态依赖性;但入侵AMF可消除氮形态对本地植物的影响。在无氮源供应时,AMF不影响两种植物群落的生长,而提供任一形态氮源时,入侵AMF均显著促进该入侵植物的地下生物量和总生物量而不改变本地植物的生长。加拿大一枝黄花-AMF正相互作用强度显著大于本地植物-AMF相互作用的强度,且这种正的相互作用是通过直接或间接调节加拿大一枝黄花的表型特征(如株高、叶数、根状茎数量等)来实现的。该研究强调了植物-AMF相互作用在入侵中的重要性,并揭示了加拿大一枝黄花特殊的氮获取策略,为进一步研究入侵机制提供了重要的依据。  相似文献

Invasion of native habitats by alien or generalist species is recognized worldwide as one of the major causes behind species decline and extinction. One mechanism determining community invasibility, i.e. the susceptibility of a community to invasion, which has been supported by recent experimental studies, is species richness and functional diversity acting as barriers to invasion. We used Scandinavian semi-natural grasslands, exceptionally species-rich at small spatial scales, to examine this mechanism, using three grassland generalists and one alien species as experimental invaders. Removal of two putative functional groups, legumes and dominant non-legume forbs, had no effect on invasibility except a marginally insignificant effect of non-legume forb removal. The amount of removed biomass and original plot species richness had no effect on invasibility. Actually, invasibility was high already in the unmanipulated community, leading us to further examine the relationship between invasion and propagule pressure, i.e. the inflow of seeds into the community. Results from an additional experiment suggested that these species-rich grasslands are effectively open to invasion and that diversity may be immigration driven. Thus, species richness is no barrier to invasion. The high species diversity is probably in itself a result of the community being highly invasible, and species have accumulated at small scales during centuries of grassland management.  相似文献

The need for open, reproducible science is of growing concern in the twenty-first century, with multiple initiatives like the widely supported FAIR principles advocating for data to be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. Plant ecological and evolutionary studies are not exempt from the need to ensure that the data upon which their findings are based are accessible and allow for replication in accordance with the FAIR principles. However, it is common that the collection and curation of herbarium specimens, a foundational aspect of studies involving plants, is neglected by authors. Without publicly available specimens, huge numbers of studies that rely on the field identification of plants are fundamentally not reproducible. We argue that the collection and public availability of herbarium specimens is not only good botanical practice but is also fundamental in ensuring that plant ecological and evolutionary studies are replicable, and thus scientifically sound. Data repositories that adhere to the FAIR principles must make sure that the original data are traceable to and re-examinable at their empirical source. In order to secure replicability, and adherence to the FAIR principles, substantial changes need to be brought about to restore the practice of collecting and curating specimens, to educate students of their importance, and to properly fund the herbaria which house them.  相似文献

Aim

Introduced species spreading to natural ecosystems is a leading cause of environmental change and a key feature of the Anthropocene. While there have been many studies of the traits of introduced and invasive species, less is known about the traits that affect a species' chances of reaching and establishing in new areas. We asked whether British species that are present in Australia have different traits to British species that are not present in Australia.

Location

Great Britain and Australia.

Methods

We compiled a list of all vascular plant species from Great Britain and divided them into those that are present in Australia (395 species) and those that are not present in Australia (1171 species). We compiled data for each species' seed mass, seedbank longevity, maximum plant height, flower size, flower colour and geographical extent in the British Isles. We conducted independent sample t-tests for continuous variables and Chi-squared tests for categorical variables to determine differences between groups.

Results

We found British species present in Australia have, on average, larger geographic extents in the British Isles, longer periods of seed bank longevity (mean ~3 months as opposed to ~3 weeks), and maximum heights that are on average 36% taller than British species that are not present in Australia. However, British species present in Australia did not have significantly different flower size, flower colour or seed mass from British species that are not present in Australia.

Main Conclusions

British species that are present in Australia and British species that are not present in Australia differ in several traits. These differences likely result from a combination of factors including introduction biases, environmental filters during establishment and stochasticity. Our results suggest that humans may be consciously and unconsciously selecting species for introduction. Some of the traits that are associated with an increased chance of a species being transported to/establishing in a new range also contribute to invasiveness. Thus, anthropogenic introduction biases could contribute to an increased risk of ecosystem invasion.  相似文献

Arabidopsis thaliana brassinosteroid signaling kinases (BSKs) constitute a receptor‐like cytoplasmic kinase sub‐family (RLCK‐XII) with 12 members. Previous analysis demonstrated a positive role for BSK1 and BSK3 in the initial steps of brassinosteroid (BR) signal transduction. To investigate the function of BSKs in plant growth and BR signaling, we characterized T‐DNA insertion lines for eight BSK genes (BSK1–BSK8) and multiple mutant combinations. Simultaneous elimination of three BSK genes caused alterations in growth and the BR response, and the most severe phenotypes were observed in the bsk3,4,7,8 quadruple and bsk3,4,6,7,8 pentuple mutants, which displayed reduced rosette size, leaf curling and enhanced leaf inclination. In addition, upon treatment with 24‐epibrassinolide, these mutants showed reduced hypocotyl elongation, enhanced root growth and alteration in the expression of BR‐responsive genes. Some mutant combinations also showed antagonistic interactions. In support of a redundant function in BR signaling, multiple BSKs interacted in vivo with the BR receptor BRI1, and served as its phosphorylation substrates in vitro. The BIN2 and BIL2 GSK3‐like kinases, which are negative regulators of BR signaling, interacted in vivo with BSKs and phosphorylated them in vitro, probably at different sites to BRI1. This study demonstrates redundant biological functions for BSKs, and suggests the existence of a regulatory link between BSKs and GSK3‐like kinases.  相似文献

Abstract Hart (1977) constructed a model to explain the rarity of biennials in the North American flora. However, Hart's model is inadequate, because: 1) biennials were not compared with annuals, 2) facultative biennials were not included, and 3) the range of general perennial life histories was not considered. Revision of Hart's model shows that strict and facultative biennials are rare, because they compete most successfully against annuals and general perennial life histories only in a narrow range of juvenile and adult survivorship values.  相似文献
