“Sea grapes” is a collective term for the edible varieties of the green seaweed genus Caulerpa. Here we conduct comparative analyses of the biomass productivities and biochemical properties of C. lentillifera and C. racemosa from tropical Australia. Commercial-scale production was evaluated using 1 m2 culture units with high stocking densities (>5 kg m?2). Productivity of C. lentillifera in a 6-week period yielded, on average, 2 kg week?1, whereas C. racemosa yielded <0.5 kg week?1. Morphometric comparisons of the harvestable biomass revealed that C. lentillifera had a higher proportion of fronds (edible portions) to horizontal runners (stolons) and a higher density of fronds per unit area. C. racemosa fronds, however, were significantly longer. The nutritional value of C. racemosa was higher than C. lentillifera for both polyunsaturated fatty acids (10.6 vs. 5.3 mg g?1 DW) and pigments (9.4 vs. 4.2 mg g?1 DW). The content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and β-carotene decreased with increasing frond size in both species. Trace element contents also varied substantially between the species, including higher levels of zinc, magnesium and strontium in C. lentillifera, and higher levels of selenium in C. racemosa. Some less desirable elements were higher in C. lentillifera, including arsenic (1 vs. 0.1 ppm) and cadmium, whereas others were higher in C. racemosa, including lead, copper and vanadium. Overall C. lentillifera has a high biomass production potential in monoculture and distinct nutritional properties that warrant a focus on its commercialisation as a new aquaculture product in tropical Australia and in Southeast Asia more broadly.  相似文献

An edible green algal species Caulerpa lentillifera J. Agardh is reported from China for the first time. The species was collected from the southwest of Hainan Island and morphologically identified to be C. lentillifera based on the grape-like branches arising from cylindrical stolons. Phylogenetic analysis using tufA and rbcL DNA sequences also confirmed the monophyly of C. lentillifera-microphysa clade.  相似文献

A new red alga from Jeju Island, Korea is described. The alga is assigned to Acanthopeltis, Gelidiaceae by the characteristics of terete erect axes, sympodial growth, and suborbicular branchlets that are amplexi‐caul at the base. Acanthopeltis longiramulosaY. Lee et Kim is characterized by a discoid holdfast with a few stolons, rhizoids arising from the apex of the branchlet, an erect terete axis diverging into a few branches, longish obpyriform to lanceolate branchlets with smooth surfaces, and tetrasporangial stichidia or sper‐matangial and cystocarps appendages on the marginal region of the branchlet. A. longiramulosa is more closely related to Acanthopeltis japonica than Acanthopeltis hirsuta in terms of thallus morphology. However, A. longiramulosa is easily distinguished from A. japonica, which has suborbicular branchlets with setaceous processes on both surfaces.  相似文献

Cupin superfamily of proteins, including germin and germin-like proteins (GLPs) from higher plants, is known to play crucial roles in plant development and defense. To date, no systematic analysis has been conducted in soybean (Glycine max) incorporating genome organization, gene structure, expression compendium. In this study, 69 putative Cupin genes were identified from the whole-genome of soybean, which were non-randomly distributed on 17 of the 20 chromosomes. These Gmcupin proteins were phylogenetically clustered into ten distinct subgroups among which the gene structures were highly conserved. Eighteen pairs (52.2%) of duplicate paralogous genes were preferentially retained in duplicated regions of the soybean genome. The distributions of GmCupin genes implied that long segmental duplications contributed significantly to the expansion of the GmCupin gene family. According to the RNA-seq data analysis, most of the Gmcupins were differentially expressed in tissue-specific expression pattern and the expression of some duplicate genes were partially redundant while others showed functional diversity, suggesting the Gmcupins have been retained by substantial subfunctionalization during soybean evolutionary processes. Selective analysis based on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in cultivated and wild soybeans revealed sixteen Gmcupins had selected site(s), with all SNPs in Gmcupin10.3 and Gmcupin07.2 genes were selected sites, which implied these genes may have undergone strong selection effects during soybean domestication. Taken together, our results contribute to the functional characterization of Gmcupin genes in soybean.  相似文献

Despite the great interest for the role played by resident assemblages in regulating biological invasions, few studies have assessed how these can influence the spread of exotic species that have successfully established or have included more than one trophic level. On shallow rocky reefs, we assessed how the effects of different benthic assemblages on the spread of an invasive alga, Caulerpa racemosa, are influenced by alterations in the density and species composition of the resident sea urchin assemblage. In order to simulate herbivore species loss scenarios, assemblages dominated by different morphological groups of algae (i.e. turfs or encrusting corallines) or experimentally cleared plots (i.e. bare rock) were exposed to grazing by different combinations of species (Arbacia lixula and Paracentrotus lividus) and densities (natural, ?50% and ?100% of natural densities) of urchins. Algal turfs and encrusting corallines generally facilitated C. racemosa. Manipulating urchins assemblages did not affect the cover and density of fronds of C. racemosa. In contrast, halving the density of P. lividus favoured the penetration of stolons of C. racemosa, consistently among algal assemblages. Other effects of urchins varied among algal assemblages, indicating interactions between trophic levels. In algal turfs, the total removal of urchins caused a decrease in the penetration of stolons, while it enhanced the length of fronds, indicating a shift in the growth form of this clonal plant and, ultimately, a depression of its spreading ability. In bare or encrusting corallines dominated surfaces, the removal of urchins had positive effects on the penetration of stolons and on the length of fronds of C. racemosa, irrespective of one or two species being manipulated and for the intensity of their removal. Our results show that tradeoffs between negative and positive effects of herbivores, varying according to relative densities of species and to the direction and strength of the effects of resident plant assemblages, can influence local rates of spread of C. racemosa. Thus, not only facilitation of exotics by natives can be key in enhancing the spread of exotic species, but it can occur between organisms at different trophic levels. Finally, our findings have important implications for the management of C. racemosa, in view of the progressive domination of shallow rocky reefs by algal turfs.  相似文献

APorphyropsis-like epiphytic specimen found in the harbour of Helgoland was grown in culture and proved to be identical with the JapanesePorphyra yezoensis. Life history studies on this economically important alga resulted in some interesting and hitherto unknown details. The variability of the adult frond is fundamentally determined by the pattern of spore germination. Settled onChaetomorpha filaments, monospores elongate within 20 minutes; the epiphytic germlings are attached to the substrate by a typical basal cell and give rise exclusively to elongated fronds provided with a cuneate base. Unattached spores, however, germinate into buds with rhizoids; they develop into elongated elliptical to oval fronds provided with round or cordate bases. Only plants with male areas were observed in the cultures, butConchocelis was abundantly produced from cells of aged thalli. Grown in mussel-shells, the filamentous phase liberated conchospores for a long time.

We report here the complete sequence of the mitochondrial genome of the brown alga Laminaria digitata (Hudson) J.V. Lamouroux. L. digitata mtDNA is a circular molecule of 38,007?bp (64.9% A?+?T), encoding 63 genes and 3 ORFs and with only 6.7% of non-coding sequences. Based on gene content and order, its overall organization is very similar to that of the mitochondrial genome of Pylaiella littoralis, another brown alga belonging to a different sublineage of the Phaeophyceae. In particular, the two genomes share unusual features, which hence could be unique to brown algae among the heterokont lineage, namely the presence of a rn5 gene, a short nad11 gene, a cox2 gene with a large in-frame insertion and α-proteobacterial-like promoter sequences. On the other hand, L. digitata lacks the sequences which are thought to have been transmitted horizontally to the P. littoralis genome, that is, the group-II introns in the rnl and cox1 genes, and it features only traces of an ancestral T7-like RNA polymerase. Distance phylogenetic trees inferred from concatenated mitochondrial genes confirm that speciation of brown algae occurred recently compared to other heterokonts.  相似文献

Increasing intramuscular fat (IMF) content can enhance the sensory quality of meat, including tenderness, juiciness, flavor, and color. Genome-wide association study and RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis were used to identify candidate IMF genes in Beijing Black pigs, a popular species among consumers in northern China. Two and three single nucleotide polymorphisms were significantly associated with IMF in SSC13 and SSC15 respectively. Solute carrier family 4 member 7 (SLC4A7) on SSC13 and insulin induced gene 2 (INSIG2), coiled-coil domain containing 93 (CCDC93), and diazepam binding inhibitor acyl-CoA binding protein (DBI) on SSC15 are good candidate genes in this population. Furthermore, RNA-seq analysis was performed between high and low IMF groups, and 534 differentially expressed genes were identified. In addition, based on differentially expressed genes, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis revealed that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors and FoxO signaling pathway pathways might contribute to IMF. Moreover, the DBI gene was identified as a candidate for IMF both by genome-wide association study and RNA-seq analysis, suggesting that it might be a crucial candidate gene for influencing IMF in Beijing Black pigs.  相似文献

Turbinaria ornata (Turner) J. Agardh is a tropical alga that disperses by detached, reproductively mature floating fronds. Material properties (breaking stress, breaking extension), buoyancy, and the proportion of reproductive tissue per frond were measured for juvenile, adult, and old fronds of T. ornata. Correlations between these factors indicate that as fronds age and become more reproductively mature, the tissue in their stipes (where they break) becomes weaker, more brittle, and the overall buoyancy of the frond increases. Measurement of drag force experienced by fronds from each ontogenetic stage allowed calculation of the environmental stress factor (ESF), which indicates the likelihood of detachment of a frond in the flow environment of its habitat. The ESF for fronds of each ontogenetic stage predicted that reproductively mature fronds (adult and old) break more readily than immature (juvenile) fronds. Increased proportions of reproductively mature fronds in floating rafts following storms compared with the proportion of mature fronds attached to the substratum support the ESF predictions. This combination of ontogenetic changes in material properties, buoyancy, and reproductive maturity in combination with the life history of T. ornata may contribute to the dispersal of this alga throughout French Polynesia.  相似文献

Chondrus crispus Stackhouse (Gigartinales) is a red seaweed found on North Atlantic rocky shores. Electrophoresis of RNA extracts showed a prominent band with a size of around 6,000 bp. Sequencing of the band revealed several sequences with similarity to totiviruses, double‐stranded RNA viruses that normally infect fungi. This virus‐like entity was named C. crispus virus (CcV). It should probably be regarded as an extreme viral quasispecies or a mutant swarm since low identity (<65%) was found between sequences. Totiviruses typically code for two genes: one capsid gene (gag) and one RNA‐dependent RNA polymerase gene (pol) with a pseudoknot structure between the genes. Both the genes and the intergenic structures were found in the CcV sequences. A nonidentical gag gene was also found in the nuclear genome of C. crispus, with associated expressed sequence tags (EST) and upstream regulatory features. The gene was presumably horizontally transferred from the virus to the alga. Similar dsRNA bands were seen in extracts from different life cycle stages of C. crispus and from all geographic locations tested. In addition, similar bands were also observed in RNA extractions from other red algae; however, the significance of this apparently widespread phenomenon is unknown. Neither phenotype caused by the infection nor any virus particles or capsid proteins were identified; thus, the presence of viral particles has not been validated. These findings increase the known host range of totiviruses to include marine red algae.  相似文献

[目的] 本研究旨在结合酵母菌蛋白质二硫键异构酶(protein disulfide isomerase,PDI)与其底物蛋白鸡胱抑素C (chicken cystatin C,cC)在酵母中的共表达,理解PDI影响外源蛋白合成与表达的调控规律。运用转录组深度测序技术(RNA-Seq)筛选差异基因,调取并鉴定影响cC表达的关键基因,为解析外源蛋白高效表达机制,改造工程菌株提供理论支撑。[方法] 以巴斯德毕赤酵母GS115、GS115-cC为出发菌株,采用电转的方法将携带PDI编码基因的载体pPIC3.5K转入到GS115/GS115-cC菌株,使其在菌株中过表达,研究过表达PDI对cC表达的影响。采用RNA-Seq深度测序方法,研究重组毕赤酵母基因表达差异情况。并结合KEGG注释结果对数据进行分析,挑选差异显著表达基因进行验证,初步明确其在蛋白表达调控方面的功能。[结果] 本研究通过构建过表达PDI重组毕赤酵母菌株,使得外源蛋白cC的表达量显著增加。利用RNA-seq技术分析过表达PDI菌株与正常菌株的差异,最终筛选了373个差异表达基因,其中有122个差异基因注释到KEGG生物通路,包括12个基因注释到蛋白质转运和分解代谢途径,21个基因注释到蛋白质折叠分选和降解途径,以及24个基因参与蛋白质的翻译途径等。[结论] 在毕赤酵母中过表达PDI能显著增加外源蛋白cC的表达量。通过对过表达与正常表达PDI的毕赤酵母基因的表达谱分析,初步确定了其中一些转录情况变化显著的基因,明确了它们参与的细胞途径和信号通路,为改造具有高效率表达淀粉样蛋白的酵母菌株奠定基础。  相似文献
