East coast geelbek exist as a single stock comprising three distinct age/size structured subpopulations. The subadults (1-4 years) occur in the SW Cape, South Africa. They feed principally on anchovy Engraulis capensis , which they follow inshore in summer and offshore in winter. The adults (5-9+ years) undergo a seasonal inshore and longshore migration to Natal where they spawn offshore in spring. During this migration they feed mainly on the pilchard Sardinops sagax , which also move north-eastwards during this time, facilitated by regional oceanographic conditions. 'Adolescent' fish (4/5 years) appear to undergo limited gonadal growth and partially accompany the spawning stock on their migration. It is suggested that the eggs, larvae and early juveniles are transported southwards by the peripheral inshore waters of the Agulhas Current. Juveniles (<2 years) use the SE Cape region as a nursery area for about 1 year, initially feeding on mysids and then switching to anchovy, before moving south-westwards to join the Subadults in the SW Cape region. 相似文献

Life history of the salema, Sarpa salpa, off the Canarian archipelago was studied from samples collected between January 1998 and December 1999. Fish ranged from 119 to 452 mm in total length and from 24.9 to 1491.7 g in weight. The species was characterized by a protandric hermaphroditism. The overall sex ratio was unbalanced in favour of males (1 : 0.41). The reproductive season extends from September to March, with a peak in spawning activity in December–January. Males reached maturity at a smaller length (226 mm, 2 years old) than females (294 mm, 3 years old). Males, females and all fish showed an isometric growth. The morphometric relationship between length and mass for the whole population was described by the parameters: a = 0.0000134 and b = 3.01. A concentric pattern of opaque and translucent zones was readily distinguishable on the otoliths. Two rings, one opaque and one translucent, were laid down each year on the otoliths; the opaque zone was formed during the summer months, and the translucent zone during the winter months. Individuals aged 0 to 11 years were found. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation for all individuals were: L = 479 mm, k = 0.212 year–1, and t0 = –1.08 year. 相似文献

Roule's goby Gobius roulei in the Kvarner area of the northern Adriatic Sea attained ≥ 87.5 mm L T and an age of 7 years. In both sexes gonad development began in their second year. All males were mature by 3 years, and females by 4 years. Fecundity was related to L T and varied between 1200 and 8000 eggs. The breeding season lasted from April to August. Nests were built under empty shells of Pitaria chione or stones. Roule's goby was a predator and picker, feeding mostly on mobile benthic fauna, including bivalves, gastropods, polychaets, pagurids, mysids, gammarids and fishes. Larger specimens ate mainly macrofauna, while smaller specimens ate both meiofauna and macrofauna. 相似文献

The genus Sarcophyton is an abundant soft coral on the marginal, high-latitude reefs in KwaZulu-Natal. A 2-year study on reproduction in the most
common species,S. glaucum, revealed that gametogenesis in male and female colonies takes 9–10 and 16–18 mo, respectively, in this gonochoric, seasonal,
broadcast spawner. Gametogenesis and spawning are synchronised in and between colonies, and with other common soft corals
on the reefs. Spawning occurs annually in March between full and new moon with the release of spermsacs and the mature oocytes,
the smaller oocytes being retained for further development. Thus far, the reproductive attributes of S. glaucum are comparable with other studies on the genus. However, the KwaZulu-Natal population of S. glaucum manifested the unusual attribute of hermaphroditism in 9% of the colonies, these having Stage I and II spermaries and predominantly
Stage III and IV oocytes in their polyps. Small numbers of Stage I and II oocytes indicated that such colonies may be simultaneous
hermaphrodites but this could not be confirmed. The complex reproductive strategy and associated measure of hermaphroditism
in S. glaucum on KwaZulu-Natal reefs are discussed in terms of the species’ recruitment success in this marginal, high-latitude environment. 相似文献

The feeding periodicity of three species of fishes in floodplain lagoons of the Macintyre River varied during 24 h cycles, however, peak feeding activity (around midday and late afternoon) was similar among the species studied, despite differences in their trophic position. In contrast, sampling season and site seemed to have a stronger effect on the composition of the diet than time of day. These findings have implications for studies of trophic dynamics and food web structure in floodplain lagoons. 相似文献

On the life history of the lesser gurnard (Scorpaeniformes: Triglidae) inhabiting the Agulhas Bank, South Africa 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Growth analysis based on sectioned sagittal otoliths revealed the lesser gurnard Chelidonichthys queketti on the Agulhas Bank to be relatively fast growing and long lived, with ages of up to 7 years being recorded. Total length at age (mm) was described best by the specialized von Bertalanffy growth model as L T =306·1 (1 − e0·53(t+0·18) ). First approximations of total, natural and fishing mortality rates were determined at 0·73, 0·38 and 0·35 year−1 respectively. The adult population was male dominated with a sex ratio of 1 female: 1·2 males with the mean size of males and females being similar. The lesser gurnard is an iteroparous species with females maturing by the end of the first year of life (195 mm L T ), thereafter spawning throughout the year with reproductive activity peaking over spring and late summer. The lesser gurnard appears to exhibit similar life-history patterns to other triglid species in that it can be classified as a generalist. Generalistic life-history characteristics such as a fast growth rate, early sexual maturity at a relatively large size, a non-seasonal spawning pattern, feeding on a variety of prey organisms and the ability to inhabit various substrata could all contribute to it maintaining a high biomass on the Agulhas Bank. 相似文献

The life histories of two globally endangered hammerhead sharks, Sphyrna lewini and Sphyrna mokarran, were examined using samples collected from a range of commercial fisheries operating along the east coast of Australia. The catch of S. lewini was heavily biased towards males, and there were significant differences in von Bertalanffy growth parameters (L(∞) and k) and maturity [stretched total length (L(ST)) and age (A) at which 50% are mature, L(ST50) and A(50)] between those caught in the tropics (L(∞) = 2119 mm, k = 0·163, L(ST50) = 1471 mm, A(50) = 5·7 years) and those caught in temperate waters (L(∞) = 3199 mm, k = 0·093, L(ST50) = 2043 mm, A(50) = 8·9 years). The best-fit estimates for a three-parameter von Bertalanffy growth curve fit to both sexes were L(∞) = 3312 mm, L(0) = 584 mm and k = 0·076. Males attained a maximum age of 21 years and grew to at least 2898 mm L(ST). The longevity, maximum length and maturity of females could not be estimated as mature animals could not be sourced from any fishery. Length at birth inferred from neonates with open umbilical scars was 465-563 mm L(ST). There was no significant difference in length and age at maturity of male and female S. mokarran, which reached 50% maturity at 2279 mm L(ST) and 8·3 years. Sphyrna mokarran grew at a similar rate to S. lewini and the best-fit estimates for a two-parameter von Bertalanffy equation fit to length-at-age data for sexes combined with an assumed mean length-at-birth of 700 mm were L(∞) = 4027 mm and k = 0·079. Females attained a maximum age of 39·1 years and grew to at least 4391 mm L(ST). The oldest male S. mokarran was 31·7 years old and 3691 mm L(ST). Validation of annual growth-band deposition in S. mokarran was achieved through a mark, tag and recapture study. 相似文献

Aspects of the biology of the Natal mountain catfish, Amphilius natalensis, including gametogenesis, spawning season, size-at-maturity, sex ratio, diet and feeding morphology were determined from fish collected in the Songimvelo Game Reserve, South Africa, between 1989 and 1990. Female sexual maturity was established at 63 mm total length. A. natalensis is an asynchronous, iteroparous spawner, breeding throughout summer from August to February. Sex ratio of females to males was 2.2:1, with females attaining a significantly larger size than males. Gametogenesis followed a pattern similar to that of other freshwater teleosts peaking over the spawning period. Stomach content analysis and observations on feeding morphology revealed that A. natalensis was an opportunistic predator with large fish consuming larger prey from a greater variety of taxonomic groups. The most abundant prey items eaten were dipteran (particularly Chironomidae) and ephemeropteran (particularly Baetidae) larvae. 相似文献

Synopsis The impact of exploitation on various life-history characteristics of two sex changing, reef-dwelling sparid species was examined by comparing populations protected in a large marine reserve with those adjacent to the reserve. Like other sparids, Chrysoblephus laticeps and C. cristiceps grow slowly and are long lived, reaching ages of 17 and 21 years, respectively. No significant differences in the growth rate of C. laticeps were measured, but growth in C. cristiceps was significantly slower in the exploited population. Observed data showed that sex ratios outside the marine reserve were skewed towards the females, a result of size selective exploitation. Size at sex change was also significantly smaller for C. cristiceps in the exploited area, but not so for C. laticeps. This difference between the species was explained as a function of the size at recruitment into the fishery and the degree of protection afforded both large females and male fish. Considering the possibility that reproduction could be impaired as a result of changes in population structure, the tactic of protection through marine reserves is supported as a hedge against recruitment failure. 相似文献

Geographic variation in the growth of white croaker,Pennahia argentata, off the coast of northwest Kyushu,Japan 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We examined geographic variation in the growth of white croaker,Pennahia argentata, off the coast of northwest Kyushu, Japan, Ariake Sound, Tachibana Bay, Omura Bay and the Goto Sea by examination of otoliths. The outer margins of the otoliths showed that a opaque zone was formed once a year, with its peak in June, and could be used as an annulus. White croaker caught during this study reached a maximum age of 10years in the Goto Sea. The growth curves for both sexes in all localities were expressed by the von Bertalanffy growth equations from back-calculated total length of fish. We found significant sexual differences in growth curves in Ariake Sound, Tachibana Bay and the Goto Sea. For both sexes, white croaker in the Goto Sea reached the largest length at each estimated age of the four localities. The growth curves for both sexes showed significant differences among four localities, suggesting that several stocks may exist in the study area although the greatest distance between each locality was at most 30 km. 相似文献

Aspects of the biology of the panga, Pterogymnus laniarius, a commercially important endemic southern African, demersal sparid fish species, are described from material collected monthly between February 1994 and July 1995 on the Agulhas Bank, South Africa. Growth studies based on sectioned sagittal otoliths revealed that the panga is relatively slow growing with ages of 16 years being recorded. Growth was best described by the von Bertalanffy growth model as Lt = 379.4 (1-e–0.13(t+1.78)). Estimates of total mortality, natural and fishing mortality were estimated at 0.36 year–1 0.28 year–1 and 0.08 year–1, respectively. Detailed histological examination revealed that panga are late gonochorists, males and females maturing after a non-functional intersexual interval. Females mature at approximately 200 mm fork length or 4 years of age. Reproductive activity occurs throughout the year, peaking slightly in winter when small pelagic eggs are spawned. Gametogenesis was found to be similar to that of other sparid fishes and marine teleosts in general. The panga feeds predominantly on crustaceans with a distinct ontogenetic shift in feeding habits. Juvenile fish feed predominantly in the water column on mysids after which they move to the benthos with subadult fish feeding on ophiuroids and amphipods. Adult fish remain on or near the benthos, feeding predominantly on crabs with polychaetes, ophiuroids and fishes also present in the diet in smaller quantities. Several aspects of the panga's biology such as it's late gonochoristic reproductive style, protracted spawning season, maturation before recruitment and the ability to utilise large areas of the Agulhas Bank by feeding on soft substratum prey are thought to enable this species to sustain a higher fishing pressure than other sympatric sparid species. The panga's longevity, slow growth and high natural mortality rate mitigates against these factors and needs to be considered in the development of a management strategy. 相似文献

Feeding periodicity, daily ration and vertical migration of juvenile Cape hake Merluccius capensis are investigated from midwater and bottom trawl collections taken during a 42-h period between 29 February and 2 March 1992 at a fixed position off the west coast of South Africa. Feeding of 10-20 cm hake intensified during the night when they ascended into subsurface layers to prey on recruits of anchovy Engraulis capensis. Larger hake remained close to the bottom, were partially cannibalistic and exhibited no diel feeding periodicity. M. capensis appear to migrate vertically and feed asynchronously in midwater, as individuals, and not as a population, returning to the bottom when satiated. Based upon the exponential rate of decline in stomach fullness throughout the day, the evacuation rate by hake <20 cm was estimated as 0.054 h−1 ; 90% evacuation of anchovy prey required an estimated 43 h. Using the Elliott & Persson and Eggers methods, the daily ration was estimated as 5.51 and 4.15% of wet body weight respectively. The effect of the foraging behaviour of M. capensis on the appropriateness of acoustic sampling for estimates of their abundance is discussed. 相似文献

(1) Two groups of individually cultured Isotoma viridis were studied. They were given a diet of Tetramin fishfood and Pleurococcus algae respectively, in order to monitor individual changes in oxygen uptake during culture. (2) Growth rate, moulting frequency and the maximal live weight reached were higher when fed on Tetramin. (3) Egg production in the culture fed Pleurococcus was twice that fed on Tetramin, due to the more fertile intermoult periods without oviposition in animals fed Tetramin. The egg quality seemed to be lowered in the algae-fed animals rather less than in those fed with fishfood. (4) In both cultures, an increase of 35–40% of the metabolic rate at the start of the experiment was observed. This increase was maintained with a Tetramin diet, whilst it disappeared in cultures fed Pleurococcus. The F1 generation of both groups showed an increased metabolic rate, that from Tetramin-fed being significantly higher than that from Pleurococcus-fed animals. (5) It is suggested that the initial increase in metabolism is a result of excess food, and the increased level of oxygen uptake in animals on a Tetramin diet the result of inadequacy of the composition of the fishfood for egg production, thus channelling the energy uptake mainly into growth and metabolism. (6) Neither Tetramin nor Pleurococcus are considered to provide an adequate diet for I. viridis, as reproductive success differed considerably from field conditions. 相似文献

Increased industrial activities on the Peace and Athabasca River systems have raised concerns about cumulative impacts on fish and water resources downstream, in the Slave River of Alberta and the Northwest Territories, Canada. Because very little information was available on the fish communities in this system, we examined spatial and temporal patterns of diet for nine species (four piscivores and five invertebrate feeders) from three different types of habitat along the lower Slave River system and assessed trophic relationships within the communities. All actively feeding species exhibited seasonal variations in diet within and among the study areas. Dietary overlap was generally low throughout all seasons and locations. In the lower Slave River and its major tributary, the Salt River, substantial dietary overlap between piscivores (particularly walleye, Stizostedion vitreum), and invertebrate feeders occurred in the spring. In the summer no overlap occurred as walleye shifted to a more piscivorous diet, attaining a moderate degree of overlap with northern pike, Esox lucius. Compared with the Slave River, which is a large but homogeneous system upstream of its delta at Great Slave Lake, there was a greater diversity of actively feeding invertebrate feeders in the Salt River. Three of the latter were benthic feeders exhibiting moderate degrees of diet overlap during spring and summer. During the fall, few fish were feeding. Most fishes in the lower Slave River system are generalist, opportunistic feeders, consuming a number of different prey, the importance of which varies spatially and seasonally, as the abundance of these prey varies in the environment. 相似文献

Embryonic development times of the principal entomostracan zooplankton of Lake le Roux, Orange River, South Africa, are described. Durations decreased monotonically with temperature over the thermal tolerance range and are described using Blehrádek's equation. The present data are compared with other observations on rate-temperature responses of warm-water and temperate zooplankton. Small, but ecologically significant, differences are discerned. The possible significance of species-specific rate-temperature responses to the phenomenon of seasonal succession is explored. 相似文献

We collected pearly razorfish, Xyrichtys novacula (Labridae), from a sandy bottom of Capo dOrlando (Tyrrhenian Sea) to study their feeding habits. We caught fish by hand-lines and seine nets and identified, counted and weighed food items in their stomachs. We evaluated the importance of the different prey types by calculating the frequency of occurrence, abundance and mass. We used these values to calculate the index of relative importance (IRI) for each taxonomic category and a modified index (MI) which did not incorporate %N into the formula. Gammarideans were dominant food items in terms of %F but showed a very low MI value; the bivalve Acanthocardia tubercolata was the dominant species in terms of %W and MI value. The prey items were mostly benthic organisms belonging to the assemblage of fine, well-sorted sands showing that X. novacula is a benthic feeder. Despite the large number of prey taxa found, few species accounted for most of the prey consumed, indicating specialist feeding, as confirmed by the low value of the Levins standardised index. We found significant differences in prey distribution among size classes, with the highest prey diversity recorded in 120–140 mm TL size classes. Correspondence analysis showed a trend of increasing predator size classes among prey items, with small prey, such as copepods and amphipods, in the smallest predator size classes and bigger prey in the larger ones. Prey caught by larger predators differed significantly in weight from those taken by smaller specimens. There was a significant positive correlation of fish length with bivalves, decapods and echinoids, and a negative one with copepods, ostracods, caprellids, gammarideans. There were no significant differences between males and females of overlapping sizes. Juveniles are able to exploit only small, vulnerable prey, while adults take few, large prey, thereby avoiding competition with juveniles. 相似文献

In this paper, the population biology of the velvet belly lanternshark Etmopterus spinax was studied and life‐history coefficients determined. Age was estimated from sections of the second dorsal spine and validated by marginal increment analysis. Males attained a maximum age of 8 years while 11 year‐old females were found. Several growth models were fitted and compared for both size‐at‐age and mass‐at‐age data, showing that even though this is a small‐sized species, it has a relatively slow growth rate. This species matures late, specifically at 49·6 and 42·5% of the maximum observed ages for males and females, respectively. It has a low fecundity, with a mean ovarian fecundity of 9·94 oocytes and a mean uterine fecundity of 7·59 embryos per reproductive cycle. This species seems to have a long reproductive cycle, and even though no conclusive data were obtained, a 2–3 year cycle is possible. The estimated coefficients indicate that this species has a vulnerable life cycle, typical of deepwater squalid sharks. Given the high fishing pressures that it is suffering in the north‐east Atlantic, this fish may already be facing severe declines or in risk of facing them in the near future. 相似文献

In the Iberian endemic loach Cobitis paludica , in a small seasonal tributary of the Guadalquivir River, 65–70% of the total growth in length occurred in the first year of life. The maximum ages observed were 3+ years in males and 4+ years in females. Both sexes matured at the beginning of their second year of life. There was a significant difference from 1: 1 in the overall sex ratio of 412 males to 674 females. Spawning began in late March and ended in July. Cobitis paludica is a multiple spawner that releases a minimum of two batches of eggs per female each year. Once spawning had started, however, there was no recruitment from the stock of transparent oocytes to the mature stock. The number of eggs decreased from the first batch to the second, but there was no significant difference in the mean egg diameter between batches. Compared with other populations of this species, the present population, from a low latitude, is characterized by a low number of age groups, fast growth, early maturity and high fecundity in multiple spawnings. These life-history characteristics are typical of species in unstable environments, where adult mortality is high, variable or unpredictable. 相似文献

Paramesochra mielkei sp.n. is described and figured from the interstices of subtidal sandy sediments off the SW Dutch coast. Kunz' (1981) phylogenetic scheme of the Paramesochridae Lang, 1948 is re-examined and it is suggested that the family comprises two phyletic lines which originated early in paramesochrid evolution. Translation into Linnean hierarchies implies the establishment of two new sub-families. Within the primitive Diarthrodellinae subfam. n., Tisbisoma Bozic, 1964 is ancestral to Diarthrodella Klie, 1949 s.l. and Rossopsyllus Soyer, 1975. Remanea Klie, 1929 is transferred to the Paramesochrinae subfam. n. which comprises the genera of both the Scottopsyllus- and the Paramesochra-group. The aberrant genus Caligopsyllus Kunz, 1975, standing close to Apodopsyllus, is removed from the Paramesochra-group. P. brevifurca Galhano, 1970 is splitted into two subspecies and replaced in the genus Paramesochra. An attempt is made to assess the phyletic interrelationships of the Paramesochra-species and the resulting cladogram splits the genus into four species-groups. P. mielkei sp.n. is referred to the dubia-group and seems to be closely related to P. borealis Geddes, 1981. Finally, an amended diagnosis and a revised key to the species of the genus Paramesochra are presented. 相似文献
