This article is an attempt to define the concept ‘(Southeast Asian) Indianness’ through a comparative approach based on a local vs. trans-regional perspective. I shall analyse the complex relationships that develop between a translocal, urban and literate Indo-Aryan Great Tradition and a local, rural and oral Little Tradition. First, I shall tackle the question of whether literacy has any socio-religious relevance and endeavour to identify its relationship to orality. I will subsequently analyse the (re-) Indianisation process as a socio-political construct and will finally propose some re-readings of ‘Aryapheresis’ (i.e. ‘Indian [ārya] Transplant’ [phérein]), which I believe has been applied wrongly in some cases, to some Southeast Asian Indian-based socio-cultural realities.  相似文献

Aim We used molecular data to answer the following questions: (1) Is morphology‐based (and to some extent, geography‐based) classification of the freshwater crab family Potamidae congruent with a molecular phylogeny? (2) What historical biogeographical event could have shaped this phylogeny? Location Material from the entire geographical range of the family Potamidae was analysed, including specimens from East Asia (China, Taiwan, the Ryukyus), Southeast Asia, South Asia (northern India, the Middle East and Near East), North Africa, and southern Europe. Methods Mitochondrial DNA sequences encoding 503 base pairs (excluding the variable regions) of the large subunit rRNA (16S rRNA) gene were obtained from 72 species belonging to 49 potamid genera, representing 51% of all known genera in this species‐rich family. Sequences were compared by means of phylogenetic analyses (minimum evolution, Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony) and Bayesian relaxed molecular clock estimates. Results The family Potamidae was found to be monophyletic with two major lineages, and there was support for the recognition of two mostly allopatric subfamilies, Potaminae and Potamiscinae. This is largely consistent with the current classification proposed. The ‘Potamiscinae’ clade comprised three subclades: (1) a well‐supported ‘eastern Asia’ subclade that included species from the eastern part of the range (China, Taiwan, the Ryukyus, the Philippines, Indochina, Malay Peninsula, northern India and Myanmar/Burma); (2) a weakly supported ‘Sunda Shelf islands’ subclade that included species from the larger Southeast Asian islands on the Sunda Shelf (Borneo, Sumatra and Java); and (3) a ‘Socotra’ subclade that comprised only Socotrapotamon from Socotra Island, off the north‐east coast of Africa. Main conclusions The discrete distribution of the two subfamilies in Europe/Asia is hypothesized to be the result of vicariance due to the collision of the Indian tectonic plate with the Asian continent, and the orogeny that caused the separation of the two freshwater crab lineages around 22.8 Ma. Within the Potamiscinae, the ‘Sunda Shelf islands’ subclade separated from other potamiscines around 21.1 Ma; and the endemic fauna of the East Asian islands (Taiwan, the Ryukyus and mainland Japan) was isolated from the Asian continent c. 8.4 Ma, following the opening of the Okinawa Trough. The ‘Socotra’ subclade diverged from the ‘eastern Asia’ subclade at 19.1 Ma during the Miocene. Its taxonomic position, however, remains unclear as the members of this clade possess the key potamine character of a transverse ridge on thoracic sternite 8, suggesting that this may in fact be a relict potamid group.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers are reported for 36 accessions representing 31 species from nine genera of the tribe Vaccinieae, family Ericaceae. The plants are tropical and come from Southeast Asia and Central and South America. The taxonomy of the tribe is outlined in these regions. Genera are often poorly defined and taxa were chosen to reflect the range of variation of the Vaccinieae. Most Southeast Asian Vaccinium species were diploid (2n= 24) as were those of Agapetes subgenus Agapetes (apart from the Himalayan A. flava), Agapetes scortechinii and Costera endertii. All other accessions were found to be polyploid. The correlation between polyploidy, geographical distribution and the possession of an ‘anatomical complex’ of the leaf and stem in Vaccinieae of New Guinea and the neotropics is discussed.  相似文献

The article explores a popular volunteer movement in Thailand and its connection to Buddhist morality and contemporary Thai politics. The article argues that volunteering in Thailand is often conceived of as a gift in various ways: as a form of dana or selfless giving; a gift from ‘good people’ to those defined as ‘in need’ in society and a gift to the Thai nation as a whole. Indeed, when volunteering is said to be a gift to the Thai nation, it is not necessarily because of its ability to redistribute resources, but because of its perceived ability to cultivate moral values and ‘good people’ for the Thai nation. The paper explores the implications that stem from presenting volunteering as a gift, with a strong emphasis on morality and ‘good people’, and how this popular discourse on volunteering may contribute to the maintenance of political status quo in Thailand, particularly in the context of the ongoing political struggles in recent years.  相似文献

Migrations of the rice planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Delphacidae) from the Philippines to Taiwan, southern China, and southern Japan were analyzed using three-dimensional migration simulations. The results strongly suggested that the Southeast Asian population of N. lugens mixes with the East Asian population. This highlighted the possibility that planthoppers from the Southeast Asian population, which have properties different from those in the East Asian population such as feeding of resistant rice varieties and wing polymorphism, could migrate to Japan via southern China and Taiwan. This study, therefore, emphasizes the special care that should be taken to monitor the properties of immigrants to Japan.  相似文献

Marcel Mauss's work on the archaic gift contributes to understandings of corporate and government support of arts organisations, or ‘institutional funding’. His approach allows us to see institutional funding as a gift that is embedded in a system of exchange wherein gifts come with a variety of obligations, and self-interest and disinterestedness are inseparable. The institutional gift operates through money and contracts; nevertheless, it entails obligations to give, to receive, and to reciprocate. This system of obligations has been joined, in the contemporary institutional gift, by another obligation: the obligation to ask.

Institutional funding of the arts has acquired additional twenty-first-century elements. The article elaborates these, using the UK as an example. It also argues that the ambivalence felt by some members of the arts world about institutional funding stems, in large part, from the obligations inherent in the gift. The recent imposition of the neo-liberal model into the arts is an intrinsic part of the exchange between institutional funders and arts organisations. Given that Mauss's work is strongly anti-liberal and anti-utilitarian, it is ironic that his ideas should prove so useful for understanding a form of twenty-first-century gift in which neo-liberalism plays such a crucial role.  相似文献

A strict consensus tree based on chloroplast and nuclear sequences (rbcL, matK, trnL, FLint2) from 46 Amorphophallus species, two Pseudodracontium species and six outgroups is used to develop a hypothesis for the evolution of ornamentation and ectexine ultrastructure in the pollen of Amorphophallus. There are four main clades: an exclusively African, largely psilate clade (‘African clade’), an Asian, largely psilate clade (‘Asian psilate clade’) and an Asian, largely striate clade consisting of a mainly continental SE Asian clade (‘continental SE Asian striate clade’) and one centred in Malesia (‘Malesian striate clade’). Ultrastructure provides a valuable contribution towards understanding pollen ornamentation in Amorphophallus. Pollen with a thin psilate ectexine without dark granules might be plesiomorphic in Amorphophallus. Then the diverse striate type would be derived. Within both striate clades, reversals to the psilate type occur. Striate pollen with psilate caps, which is nested in the continental SE Asian striate clade, is a synapomorphy of Pseudodracontium. The fossulate type is also diverse, and its distribution in the tree indicates a polyphyletic origin. Areolate, echinate and verrucate ornamentation, occur in single species in the tree, but are found also in species not included in the molecular analysis. All three are heterogeneous and probably polyphyletic too. Reticulate, scabrate and striate/scabrate ornamentation are autapomorphies, of which the reticulate type and the striate/scabrate type may derive from psilate and striate ornamentation, respectively. Of the four main clades, the Asian psilate and African clade seem to be basal, while both striate clades might have evolved from the Asian psilate clade via a species like A. rhizomatosus. Dark granules evolved more than once, which might explain their diverse size, shape and distribution.  相似文献

This paper describes the players and the play in a weekly stockmarket in Tana Toraja. South Sulawesi, where up to 600 buffalo bulls are bought and sold for exorbitant prices by any standards. These prices are partly determined by external, global economic forces. The buffaloes are all intended for sacrifice in elaborate funerals. Although contributed by individuals or families they are conceived as part of mana. the common wealth of tongkonan. the origin houses of the Toraja. Live bulls cannot be given away but are able to be lent in ceremonial exchanges at funerals. After sacrifice, their raw meat is distributed to participants in the funeral in a version of potlatch. Bulls mediate all exchange. apart from mundane commodity exchange, and are liquid assets. A mature black bull is an object of general equivalence able to be exchanged as payment for certain symbolic objects. In the past the production, distribution and circulation of buffaloes, both on the hoof and as meat, were controlled by the nobility. Buffaloes were said to be in finite supply. They derived from the Upperworld and accompanied the ancestors of the Toraja nobility to this world and were replenished through the ritual of the ways of the ancestors. Now the advent of the market has democratised buffaloes. There has been a dispersion of wealth and the power that the bulls embody. Any man—noble, commoner or former slave‐who has sufficient cash is able to buy and sell buffaloes: to have a share in the stockmarket. The marketplace has become a new field of power play, one where innovative methods are being found for increasing the supply of buffaloes by importing hundreds of inferior quality buffaloes and by a program of artificial insemination which has been instigated by the local government. In the parlance of Wall Street this is a bull market.  相似文献

Aim To analyse the historical biogeography of the lichen genus Chroodiscus using a phenotype‐based phylogeny in the context of continental drift and evolution of tropical rain forest vegetation. Location All tropical regions (Central and South America, Africa, India, Southeast Asia, north‐east Australia). Methods We performed a phenotype‐based phylogenetic analysis and ancestral character state reconstruction of 14 species of the lichen genus Chroodiscus, using paup * and mesquite ; dispersal–vicariance analysis (DIVA) and dispersal–extinction–cladogenesis (DEC) modelling to trace the geographical origin of individual clades; and ordination and clustering by means of pc‐ord , based on a novel similarity index, to visualize the biogeographical relationships of floristic regions in which Chroodiscus occurs. Results The 14 species of Chroodiscus show distinctive distribution patterns, with one pantropical and one amphi‐Pacific taxon and 12 species each restricted to a single continent. The genus comprises four clades. DIVA and DEC modelling suggest a South American origin of Chroodiscus in the mid to late Cretaceous (120–100 Ma), with subsequent expansion through a South American–African–Indian–Southeast Asian–Australian dispersal route and late diversification of the argillaceus clade in Southeast Asia. Based on the abundance of extant taxa, the probability of speciation events in Chroodiscus is shown to be extremely low. Slow dispersal of foliicolous rain forest understorey lichens is consistent with estimated phylogenetic ages of individual species and with average lengths of biological species intervals in fungi (10–20 Myr). Main conclusions The present‐day distribution of Chroodiscus can be explained by vicariance and mid‐distance dispersal through the interconnection or proximity of continental shelves, without the need for recent, trans‐oceanic long‐distance dispersal. Phylogenetic reconstruction and age estimation for Chroodiscus are consistent with the ‘biotic ferry’ hypothesis: a South American origin and subsequent eastward expansion through Africa towards Southeast Asia and north‐eastern Australia via the Indian subcontinent. The present‐day pantropical distributions of many clades and species of foliicolous lichens might thus be explained by eastward expansion through continental drift, along with the evolution of modern rain forests starting 120 Ma, rather than by the existence of a hypothetical continuous area of pre‐modern rain forest spanning South America, Africa and Southeast Asia during the mid and late Cretaceous.  相似文献

African diploid barbs (‘Barbus’, Clypeobarbus, Barboides, etc.) are a group of small cyprinids with a body size less than 20 cm and widely distributed in drainages across Africa. These species constitute a significant component of African freshwater fish fauna. This study is the first to focus on the molecular systematics and biogeography of African diploid barbs ‘Barbus’ and its African and Asian allies using both mitochondrial and nuclear genes. We test for monophyly of groups, determine interspecific relationships and estimate the time of divergence of 52 species of ‘Barbus’ and allies using two mitochondrial and four nuclear genes. Resulting trees demonstrate that ‘Barbus’ and allies (Systomus, Barboides, Clypeobarbus and African tetraploid barbs) form a strongly supported clade; however, ‘Barbus’ is not resolved as monophyletic. Divergence time analyses identify the separation between Systomus and ‘Barbus’ plus African allies may have occurred around 26 MYA. In addition to the phylogenetic results, these findings highlight the need for more thorough taxonomic and systematic studies on ‘Barbus’ and allies using morphological and additional molecular data and greater taxon sampling, including the type species of the genus Enteromius, ‘Barbus’ potamogalis.  相似文献

For the rural Sundanese of West Java who identify with Nahdatul Ulama Islam, the tingkeban is considered a mandatory ritual to be conducted for a woman who is seven months pregnant. However, like other local practices around birth, the tingkeban has come under state and urban modernising influences that have attempted to displace some of its elements as ‘culture’ rather than ‘religion’ and to discredit many of these as superstitious and backward. This paper examines the ritual elements of the tingkeban that produce and reinforce local cosmological and ontological ideas about the nature of personhood and society, and, in particular, how the ritual highlights the ambivalent status of the villagers within broader relations of power such as the Indonesian State and other forms of Islam existing in Indonesia. The paper also explores how the assumptions within the ideology of modernisation propagated under the last years of the Suharto regime coincide with assumptions in scholarly work such as those underlying Geertz's depiction of the syncretic nature of Javanese religion.  相似文献

This article examines ‘Asian electronic music’, a generally progressive diasporic South Asian scene which fuses electronic dance music beats with instruments/sounds traditionally associated with the subcontinent, and how it became embedded into ‘majoritarian’ Indian nationalism. In India, the music's perceived ‘fusion’ aesthetic became emblematic of an emergent India which was economically prosperous while ‘respecting’ its cultural heritage. Using the case of an album which remixed India's national song, Vande Mataram, this article explores the convergences and divergences between Asian electronic musicians in Delhi and Hindu nationalists. The article concludes that the musicians in Delhi did not lend to Hindu nationalism. However, they perhaps gave secular Indian nationalism a ‘cool’ gloss. Ultimately, the production and consumption of Asian electronic music in Delhi raises significant questions regarding the scene's relationship to Indian nationalisms.  相似文献

In the seedlings of three cultivars of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), ‘Prince,’‘Masterpiece’ and ‘Pinto’, co-infection by Sunn-hemp mosaic virus (SHMV) with either of the vascular wilt pathogens, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoh (Fop) or f. sp. tracbeiphilum (Fot) caused greater losses in total fresh weight and in leaf area compared with uninfected plants or plants infected singly with any one of these pathogens. Co-infection of a fourth cultivar (‘Canadian Wonder’) had no greater effects on growth reduction than single infection. The concentration of SHMV in the leaves of ‘Prince’ and to a greater extent in the leaves of ‘Masterpiece’ increased more after double infection than with infection by the virus alone. The nature and possible mechanisms of the pathogenic effects in French bean are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess the invasive potential of introduced non‐native and translocated fishes in Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace) by applying the Fish Invasiveness Screening Kit (FISK), a risk identification tool for freshwater fishes. From independent evaluations by two assessors of 35 species, calibration of FISK for Turkey identified a threshold score of 23, which reliably distinguished between potentially invasive (high risk) and potentially non‐invasive (medium to low risk) fishes for Anatolia (Asia) and Thrace (Europe). No species was categorized as ‘low risk’, 18 species were categorized as ‘medium risk’ and 17 as ‘high risk’ (two being ‘moderately high risk’, nine ‘high risk’, and six ‘very high risk’). The highest scoring species was gibel carp Carassius gibelio, whereas the lowest scoring species was Caucasian dwarf goby Knipowitschia caucasica, a translocated species. Assessor certainty in their responses averaged overall between ‘mostly uncertain’ and ‘mostly certain’, with red piranha Pygocentrus nattereri and topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva achieving the lowest and highest certainty values, respectively, and with overall significant differences in certainty between assessors. The results of the present study indicate that FISK is a useful and viable tool for identifying potentially invasive non‐native fishes in Turkey, a country characterized by natural biogeographical frontiers.  相似文献

Aims: The dynamics of Escherichia coli near the maximum temperature for growth in a rich medium are analysed. The effects of temperature history, medium composition and physiological state of the inoculum are evaluated. Methods and Results: Kinetics of E. coli K12 MG1655 is studied in ‘brain–heart infusion’ broth in a temperature controlled environment. Based on viable counts, ‘smooth’ growth curves are observed at 40, 41, 42 and 43°C. The exponential growth phase at 44 and 45°C is interrupted. At 46°C, a period of exponential growth is followed by inactivation. Neither the physiological state of the inoculum nor medium enrichment alters the dynamics, whilst temperature pre‐adaptation or chemical chaperones restore regular cell growth and division (‘smooth’ exponential growth). Conclusions: Atypical, nonexponential growth at 44, 45 and 46°C seems related to protein destabilization and can (partly) be restored by an appropriate medium design (i.e. addition of chemical chaperones) or temperature history (i.e. selection of a more resistant subpopulation). Significance and Impact of the Study: This study indicates that the maximum temperature for growth is dependent on the temperature history and the chemical environment. These observations and the nonexponential kinetics have important implications for the development of predictive models for food safety and quality.  相似文献

There is no such thing as an accidental sacrifice. Sacrifice is always pre-meditated, and if not entirely goal-oriented, at the very least inherently meaningful as a process in itself. This paper is about how we might begin to understand sacrifices that do not conform to these rules. It concerns the question: does sacrifice exist outside of its (often) dramatic, self-conscious elaboration? Within the Brazilian Catholic tradition everyday life – ideally characterised by monotonous, undramatic, acts of self-giving – is ‘true sacrifice’. For ordinary Catholics, the challenge is not how to self-sacrifice, but how to make one's mundane life of self-sacrifice visible whilst keeping one's gift of suffering ‘free’. In this paper I describe, ethnographically, the work entailed as one of ‘revelation’ and use the problems thrown up to reflect upon both the limits and advantages of Western philosophical versus anthropological understandings of Christian sacrificial practices to date.  相似文献

The peroxyoxalate reaction is utilized in a wide variety of analytical applications; however, its mechanism is still not very well understood, especially with respect to the excitation step, where the ‘chemical energy’ is transformed into ‘excitation energy’. This base‐catalysed reaction of activated oxalic phenyl esters with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of highly fluorescent aromatic hydrocarbons with low oxidation potentials is the only known chemiluminescence system for which exists experimental evidence for the occurrence of the intermolecular chemically initiated electron exchange luminescence (CIEEL) mechanism of proven high efficiency for excited state formation. We report here the singlet quantum yields and relative rate constants of the excitation step (kCAT/kD), obtained in the peroxyoxalate reaction, utilizing steroid‐substituted oxazolinylidenes as activators. In agreement with the CIEEL mechanism, a linear correlation of ln(kCAT/kD) with the oxidation potential of the activators is obtained, and the singlet quantum yields can be rationalized in terms of the free energy balance of the back electron transfer, leading to the formation of the activator's excited state. Thus, these results contribute to the experimental validation of the widely employed, thus still controversial, CIEEL mechanism. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the absence of a comprehensive pre‐Oligocene fossil record, the origin and early evolution of hystricognathous rodents have long been the subject of much uncertainty. Baluchimyinae (Rodentia) were initially interpreted as a subfamily of the ctenodactyloid Chappatimyidae (sciurognathous), a group considered to be endemic to the Indian subcontinent and to be closely related to hystricognathous rodents. A newly discovered early Oligocene hystricognathous rodent, Bugtimys zafarullahi gen. n. et sp. n., described herein, from the Bugti Hills (Balochistan, Pakistan) sheds new light on the higher level taxonomy of the previously described Baluchimyinae. As a contribution to the phylogenetic debates regarding the origin of Hystricognathi, we present a cladistic assessment of the dental evidence for the Palaeogene hystricognathous rodent cladogenesis. Our phylogenetic results consistently support the monophyly of the Hystricognathiformes clade (including Tsaganomyidae plus Hystricognathi) of which baluchimyine rodents are clearly members. There is, however, no support for the monophyly of a baluchimyine clade. Nonetheless, ‘baluchimyines’ are for the moment reinterpreted as Hystricognathi incertae sedis. Hystricognathous rodents appear to be well diversified at least since the early Oligocene, both in Africa and South America (phiomorphs and caviomorphs, respectively), and also now in south Asia. Furthermore, our phylogenetic results support close relationships between early hystricognathous and Asian ‘ctenodactyloid’ rodents, which clearly points to an Asian origin for Hystricognathi. In this phylogenetic framework, ‘baluchimyines’ and tsaganomyids are representatives of an initial phase of diversification of hystricognathous rodents in Asia. Oligocene phiomorphs and caviomorphs (sister groups) seem therefore to share a common ‘Asian’ hystricognathous ancestor. This reinforces the possibility that the early dispersal of hystricognathous rodents to South America was not from Africa but from Asia.  相似文献
