A theoretical synthesis of electrical parameters of interaction between gamma radiation and excited membranes of nervous and muscular tissues suggests a correlation between power (dose-rate, R) and duration of exposure (T), of the liminal stimulation of a neuron by gamma radiation: R = 6 + 8/T. In studying early transient neurologic disorders (ETND) the threshold charges of ionizing radiation have been defined for various probabilities of occurrence of one of the ETND symptoms.  相似文献

The objective of the present report was to investigate the influence of androgen in the neonatal period on the development of ejaculatory and postejaculatory behavior. At birth, male rats were either castrated (neonatally castrated males), implanted with a Silastic tube of the aromatase inhibitor androsta-1,4,6-triene-3,17-dione for the first 10 days (ATD males), or left untreated (normal males). Female rats were either injected with 0.5 mg testosterone propionate (TP) on Days 1 (day of birth) and 2 (androgenized females) or left untreated (normal females). All gonadally intact animals were castrated at 60 days of age. Following TP administration, all animals were tested for ejaculatory and postejaculatory behavior under both shock and nonshock conditions. All animals were capable of showing the intromission pattern; however, the ejaculatory pattern was exhibited regularly only by those animals exposed to androgen at birth (normal males, androgenized females, and ATD males). The normal males required fewer intromissions to achieve ejaculation than the other two groups exhibiting this reflex. This result is discussed in terms of peripheral genital stimulation deficits and the differentiation of neural tissue responsible for masculine copulatory behavior. Androgenized females and ATD males displayed a refractory period, characterized by 22-kHz vocalizations, equal to or longer than that found in normal males. These results indicate that defeminization is not necessary for the display of normal ejaculatory and postejaculatory behavior.  相似文献

In the Azorean rock-pool blenny (Parablennius parvicornis) reproductively active males display alternative morphotypes, which differ in the expression of secondary sexual characters (SSC). Males expressing SSC, the M+ morphotype, have high androgen levels and compete for crevices that will be visited by females to spawn. M+ males holding nests court females and care for the eggs. Males with low expression of SSC, the M- morphotype, have low levels of androgens and reproduce by stealing fertilizations from the M+ males. Based on the hypothesis that androgens are immunosuppressive, we expected these morphotypes to differ in immunocompetence. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a field study in which we collected repeated blood samples to monitor leukocyte populations (blood smears), and to measure the primary antibody response of males that were experimentally challenged with a foreign non-pathogenic antigen (sheep red blood cells). Circulating levels of 11-ketotestosterone and testosterone were higher in M+ males than in M- males. Neither granulocyte nor thrombocyte counts did covariate with androgens or male tactic. In contrast, lymphocyte counts and humoral antibody response were negatively correlated with body size, and as expected, both were lower in M+ than in M- males. Interestingly, in M+ males androgen levels decreased after immunization, and this was less in nest-holder males than in M+ males that were floating around in the pools. Within each morphotype we found no relationship between androgens and immunocompetence. The latter result is not supportive for androgen regulated immunosuppression in M+ males. A possible alternative is enhancement of immunity in M- males. These males had relatively high levels of injuries in comparison with M+ males. High immunity might be a consequence of high infection rate because of such injuries.  相似文献

In the African cichlid fish, Haplochromis burtoni, males are either territorial or nonterritorial. Territorial males suppress reproductive function in the nonterritorial males, and have larger gonads and larger gonadotropin-releasing hormone- (GnRH) containing neurons in the preoptic area (POA). We describe an experiment designed to establish the causal relationship between large GnRH neurons and large testes in these males by determining the feedback effects of gonadal sex steroids on the GnRH neurons. Territorial males were either castrated or sham-operated, 4 weeks after which they were sacrificed. Circulating steroid levels were measured, and the GnRH-containing neurons were visualized by staining sagittal sections of the brains with an antibody to salmon GnRH. The soma areas of antibody-stained neurons were measured with a computer-aided imaging system. Completely castrated males had markedly reduced levels of circulating sex steroids [11-ketotestosterone (11KT) and testosterone (T)], as well as 17 beta-estradiol (E2). POA GnRH neurons in castrates showed a significant increase in mean soma size relative to the intact territorial males. Hence, in mature animals, gonadal steroids act as a brake on the growth of GnRH-containing neurons, and gonadal products are not responsible for the large GnRH neurons characteristic of territorial males.  相似文献

The highveld mole-rat, Cryptomys hottentous pretoriae is a social, subterranean, co-operative breeder with a high reproductive skew. The relationship between reproductive status and reproductive physiology in male highveld mole-rats was investigated. Testicular morphometrics, histological parameters, plasma testosterone concentrations and sperm motility parameters were studied in 31 males (14 reproductive and 17 non-reproductive males). Reproductive males were significantly larger than non-reproductive males, with testicular mass and volume corrected for body mass considerably larger for the reproductive males. Circulating plasma testosterone concentrations of reproductive males were not significantly higher than non-reproductive males (reproductive males 10.3±1.8 nmol l−1 vs non-reproductive males 7.3±1.74 nmol l−1). Sperm motility parameters were measured, but no significant differences were found between reproductive and non-reproductive males. All 14 reproductive males had motile sperm, whereas 13 of the 17 (76%) of non-reproductive males possessed motile sperm. A typical ejaculate of a reproductive male contains 48.3% motile sperm characterized by a high percentage of flagellar defects, whereas the non-reproductive male has an ejaculate containing 45.6% motile sperm with a high percentage of head defects. It is apparent that non-reproductive males are not physiologically suppressed from reproducing. Moreover, the non-reproductive males are excluded from incestuous matings as a result of being the offspring of the reproductive female.  相似文献

A 4-year study (1989–1992) of a population of Lipophrys pavo living in a brackish lagoon (Maugio, France) revealed three types of male during the spawning season (April to September): (i) nest-breeder males which are territorial, and have well-developed secondary sexual characteristics; (ii) non-functional males which were abundant only in 1991 when population density was very high and (iii) 1-year-old kleptogamic males with small body size which possess neither secondary sexual organs nor a testicular gland, although their testes are functional and hyperdeveloped (up to 10.5% of carcass weight). The percentage of kleptogamic males was fairly stable in the population (from 7.9 to 10.0%) and highly variable in their age class (from 8.5 to 51.3%). It is suggested that kleptogamy is a conditional strategy adopted by smaller males.  相似文献

Factors leading to the separation of mating behaviours were investigated in the sand-bubbler crab, Scopimera globosa. The crabs mated on the surface (surface copulation, SC) and underground (UC). UC males were large (old) whilst SC males were small (young). Burrowless females bred in the UC males' burrows. These females accepted UC in exchange for access to a burrow. UC occurred much more frequently than SC in the burrow area in which females oviposited. Most SC occurred in the water-saturated area affording a rich diet. SC was accepted by most large and small females in both areas and most UC by small females in the burrow area. SC was an alternative to UC for males in that there was a size dependence between types of copulation. These two mating behaviours involved different degrees of interaction with neighbouring males. Males attempting to carry a female to their burrows for UC were more often disturbed by other males than were males attempting SC. In the interaction for both UC and SC, larger males were likely to resist the disturbances. UC males needed their own burrows, but these burrows were not enlarged before mating. UC males have a higher paternity of eggs than SC males, because SC males' sperm is often displaced by other males. Thus, UC was a behaviour with relatively higher costs and benefits for male crabs than SC behaviour. Alternative mating behaviours in male S. globosa are conditional, and explained by intrasexual interactions and a male life history strategy with a trade-off between growth and reproduction. It is not likely that the size dependence of male mating behaviour is caused by mate preference of females for UC males in the burrow area.  相似文献

Mixed populations of the twospotted spider mite (TSM),Tetranychus urticae (Koch), and the Banks grass mite (BGM),Oligonychus pratensis (Banks), occur on corn and sorghum plants in late summer in the Great Plains. Interspecific matings between these arrhenotokous species occur readily in the laboratory but yield no female offspring. The effect of interspecific mating on female: male sex ratios was measured by examining the F1 progeny of females that mated with both heterospecific and conspecific males in no-choice situations. TSM females that mated first with BGM males and then with TSM males produced a smaller percentage of female offspring than TSM females that mated only with TSM males (43.1±5.8 and 78.9±2.8% females, respectively). Similarly, BGM females mated with heterospecific males and then with conspecific males produced fewer female offspring than females mated only with BGM males (55.7±5.2 and 77.5±2.5%, respectively). Lower female: male sex ratios were produced also by BGM females that mated with TSM males after first mating with conspecifics (62.4±3.4%). In mixed populations containing males of both species, females also produced lower female: male sex ratios, but these ratios were not as low as expected based on mating propensities and progeny sex ratios observed in no-choice tests. These data suggest that interspecific mating may substantially reduce female fitness in both mite species by reducing the output of female offspring, but in mixed populations this effect is mitigated by unidentified behavioral mechanisms.  相似文献

The fruitless mutants fru(3) and fru(4) were assessed for sex-specific reproductive-behavioral phenotypes and compared to the previously reported fru mutants. Among the several behavioral anomalies exhibited by males expressing these relatively new mutations, some are unique. fru(3) and fru(4) males are less stimulated to court females than fru(1) and fru(2). No courtship pulse song is generated by either fru(3) or fru(4) males, even though they perform brief wing extensions. fru(3) and fru(4) males display significantly less chaining behavior than do fru(1) males. The hierarchy of courtship responses by fru males directed toward females vs. males, when presented with both sexes simultaneously, is that fru(1) males perform vigorous and indiscriminant courtship directed at either sex; fru(4) males are similarly indiscriminant, but courtship levels were lower than fru(1); fru(2) males prefer females; fru(3) males show a courtship bias toward males. fru(3) and fru(4) males essentially lack the Muscle of Lawrence (MOL). On several reproductive criteria, there was no difference between fru-variant females and fru(+). The increases in phenotypic severity measured for the new mutants are discussed in the context of the emerging molecular genetics of fru and with regard to the gene's position within the sex-determination pathway.  相似文献

Pregnancy block by male pheromones in mice differs in incidence depending on the combination of strains. Female mice of BALB/cA strain mated with BALB/cA males show a 100% pregnancy block when exposed to males of inbred strain DDK shortly after copulation (Chung et al., Biol Reprod 1997; 57:312-319). In the present study, BALB/cA females mated with the males of other strains--CBA/J, C3H/HeN, C57BL/6Cr, and IXBL--showed higher pregnancy rates (66.6-87. 5%) even when they were exposed to DDK males. In the pharmacological induction of pregnancy block with dopamine agonist (bromocriptine, 4 mg/kg BW), BALB/cA females mated with BALB/cA males showed a 100% pregnancy block. In contrast, BALB/cA females mated with CBA/J, C3H/HeN, and C57BL/6Cr males showed higher pregnancy rates (40-70%). These results suggest that the better pregnancy rate of BALB/cA females mated with alien males may be due to the stronger viability of F(1) embryos. This interpretation was confirmed by an embryo transfer experiment in which a higher implantation rate was observed when BALB/cA embryos grown in BALB/cA females exposed to BALB/cA males were transferred into recipient BALB/cA females exposed to DDK males. These results suggest that the embryonic genotype or viability of the embryo is one factor contributing to the occurrence of pregnancy block by male pheromones in mice.  相似文献

Differences between males and females in the effects of regular physical training on the heart were investigated by echocardiography in 579 male (nonathletes: 122, athletes: 457) and in 336 (nonathletes: 84, athletes: 252) female subjects of variable age. The age groups were: children (<15 yr.), adolescent-young (15-18 yr.), young adult (19-30 yr.), adult (31-45 yr.) and people elder than 45 yr older (45<). Hypertrophy characterised by relative left ventricular muscle mass (rel.LVMM) of the athletic heart was manifest also in the females, but in comparison with the males female values were much lower both in the unconditioned and in the conditioned groups. In people belonging to the oldest groups no differences were seen either between the males and females or between athletes and nonathletes. In comparing nonathletic subjects, females showed smaller left ventricular contractility as reflected by a higher LVET/QT ratio and an increased ability of diastolic relaxation as indicated by a higher E/A ratio. Physical training induced a more marked development when the initial level was lower, namely, in the contractility of the females, and in the compliance of the males. No intersex difference was seen in the modified regulation of the athletic heart, characterised by a lower resting heart rate and slower circumferential shortening velocity (VCF).  相似文献

The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST) in the rat forebrain differs between males and females. To test whether apoptosis may contribute to the development of sex differences in the BST, the incidence of apoptosis was determined in sham-treated males and sham-treated females sacrificed on postnatal days (PN) 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 (PN 1 being day of birth). More apoptotic nuclei were found in the principal nucleus of the BST (BSTpr) in females than in males, whereas the reverse was true for the lateral division of the BST (BSTl). Moreover, the volume of the BSTpr was larger in males than in females, whereas there was no sex difference in the volume of the BSTl. Our results also confirmed earlier reports indicating that the incidence of apoptosis in the central part of the medial preoptic nucleus (MPNc) is higher in females than in males. No sex difference in apoptosis was found in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN). The volume of the MPNc and VMH was larger in males than in females, whereas the PVN volume did not differ between males and females. To test whether sex differences in neonatal levels of gonadal steroids may cause sex differences in the incidence of apoptosis in the BSTpr, the incidence of apoptosis was compared between castrated males and females that were treated with testosterone propionate or vehicle on the day of birth. In the BSTpr of gonadal steroid-treated animals, the incidence of apoptosis was lower when compared to animals treated with vehicle, which was also true for the MPNc. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that gonadal steroids contribute to the sexually dimorphic differentiation of the BST by controlling the incidence of apoptosis.  相似文献

Movements by individual males were examined in the yellow dung fly, Scathophaga stercoraria. Males were observed from their arrival until they found a female (paired males) or departed (unpaired males). The focal variables were the male mating status, body size and the number of males and females at the site. Paired males, independent of size, spent more time in the best mate-searching area (pat and the first up-wind zone) than unpaired males. Paired males in all size classes moved around and attacked other males more often than unpaired males. Among paired males, males that caught a single female and those that took over a female from another male were very similar in their mate-searching behaviour. The total time spent searching at the pat was positively related to its resource value as indicated by the number of pairs. Time spent in the best mate-searching area was negatively related with male numbers. The causes of differences in movements and aggression between paired and unpaired males are discussed. The male distribution around cow pats can be understood only if the differences in movement patterns by paired and unpaired males are taken into account.  相似文献

Day length is the primary cue used by many mammals to restrict reproduction to favourable spring and summer months, but it is unknown for any mammal whether the seasonal loss of fertility begins at the same time and occurs at the same rate in females and males; nor it established whether the termination of mating behaviour in males and females coincides with the loss of fertility. We speculated that females, owing to their greater energetic investment in reproduction, are the limiting sex in terminating offspring production in short days (SDs). Oestrous cycles and production of young were monitored in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) transferred from long days (LDs) to SDs. Females were mated to LD males after three to eight weeks of SD treatment; in a parallel experiment, males housed in SDs were mated to LD females. After five and eight weeks in SDs, at least twice as many males as females were fertile. Both males and females continued to copulate for several weeks after becoming infertile. The onset of seasonal infertility occurs earlier in females than males and the decline in fertility precedes the seasonal loss of mating behaviour in both sexes.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to establish whether the mobility of sperm of the domestic fowl, as measured by an in vitro assay, predicted the outcome of sperm competition. Thirteen pairs of New Hampshire roosters, comprising one male categorized as having high-mobility sperm and the other as having average-mobility sperm, were used. Each male provided 25 x 10(6) sperm, which were mixed and artificially inseminated into between four and seven New Hampshire hens, each of which produced 2-11 offspring. The experiment was conducted twice, such that the same pair of males inseminated the same females. Paternity was assigned by using microsatellite markers. There was a clear effect of sperm-mobility phenotype on the outcome of sperm competition: in all 13 pairs the high-mobility male fathered the majority of offspring (75.3% overall; p < 0.0001). The proportion of offspring fathered by the high-mobility male within pairs varied significantly between male pairs (p < 0.0005). This effect was associated with the difference in sperm-mobility scores between males within pairs; there was a significant positive relationship between the proportion of offspring fathered by the high-mobility male and the ratio of mobility scores between males (p < 0.05). In addition, compared with their success predicted from the non-competitive situation, in the competitive situation high-mobility males were disproportionately successful in fertilizing eggs compared with average-mobility males. This may occur because female sperm storage is limited in some way and a greater proportion of high-mobility sperm gain access to the female's sperm storage tubules. There was no evidence that female effects accounted for any of the variation in paternity.  相似文献

Propetamphos [(E)-l-methylethyl 3[[(ethylamino)methoxyphosphinothioyl]oxy]-2-bu-tenoate], the active ingredient in Safrotin,® is an organophosphate developed by Sandoz, Ltd.® (Switzerland) as an insecticide (1). Although metabolism of propetamphos has been previously investigated (2,3), there is no pharmacokinetic data available in the literature. The current studies were undertaken to investigate the pharmacokinetics of propetamphos following intravenous administration in male and female Fischer 344 (F344) rats. Rats were dosed via an indwelling jugular cannula at a dose of 12 mg/kg (one-tenth the oral LD-50). Blood samples were withdrawn via the cannula at predetermined timepoints to quantitate plasma concentrations of propetamphos over time. Propetamphos is highly bound to plasma proteins (free fraction = 0.06). Free propetamphos concentration in plasma vs. time data were analyzed by noncompartmental methods. The terminal elimination rate constant, λ, was significantly different for males versus females (0.015 min?1 for males and 0.037 min?1 for females, p = 0.001). Plasma was cleared of unbound propetamphos at rates of 0.559 ± 0.069 and 0.828 ± 0.181 L/min/kg for males and females (mean ± standard error). Mean residence times (MRTs) for propetamphos in the body for males and females were 28.3 ± 5.7 and 14.4 ± 3.5 min, and the volume of distribution at steady state (Vss) was 14.7 ± 2.6 and 12.3 ± 4.5 L/kg. The differences in these parameters, clearance (CI), MRT, and Vss, were not statistically significant at the p < 0.05 level for males versus females, but MRT was nearly significantly different (p = 0.08). Because of the rapid elimination of propetamphos from plasma following intravenous administration, it is unlikely that propetamphos would bioaccumulate in environmentally exposed animals. Although the pharmacokinetic parameters were not statistically different for males and females in these studies, there was a clear clinical difference in their susceptibility to propetamphos toxicity. Female rats presented with overt signs of organophosphate intoxication, whereas males were only slightly effected. The observed gender-related clinical difference in susceptibility to toxicity suggests that there may be a difference in the extent of elimination due to activation versus detoxication of propetamphos in males and females. Another possible explanation for the clinical difference in propetamphos toxicity is that inhibition of acetyl-cholinesterase by the activated, oxygenated form of propetamphos (propetamphos oxon) may be greater in females than in males.  相似文献

The copulatory system of green anoles is highly sexually dimorphic. Males possess bilateral copulatory organs called hemipenes, each independently controlled by two muscles: the transversus penis (TPN) and retractor penis magnus (RPM). The TPN everts the hemipene through the cloaca and the RPM retracts it. Adult females do not possess hemipenes or either of these two muscles. The spinal nucleus projecting to the TPN and RPM contains more and larger motoneurons in males than females. Because anoles breed seasonally, two experiments were designed to test whether adult copulatory morphology varies with environmental condition, and if so, whether the effect is mediated by testicular androgens. Three groups of adult males were used in each experiment: males from breeding environmental conditions with reproductive testes (BS); males in breeding conditions with regressed testes (BS-X); and males in nonbreeding conditions with regressed testes (NBS). Experiment 1 compared gonadally intact males and Experiment 2 compared castrated males treated with either testosterone (T) or an empty implant. In both experiments, copulatory and control motoneurons appeared smaller in NBS males, but T did not affect their size. In contrast, while hemipene and RPM muscle fiber size were not plastic across season in gonadally intact males, T in castrated males significantly increased both measures under BS and BS-X, but not NBS, conditions. These results demonstrate that neuron soma size might change on a general level and environmental cues can mediate T-induced changes in peripheral structures, suggesting that plasticity across copulatory system components is regulated by different mechanisms.  相似文献

We studied habitat choice, distribution and reproductive success in the Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca in relation to the spatial structure of a fragmented forest area. Two hierarchical levels of forest habitat structure were used: (1) forest patch size (macrohabitat) and (2) vegetative structure within forest patches (microhabitat). In spring, both males and females settled preferentially in large and medium-sized forest stands (>1 ha) where breeding density was also higher than in small stands (<1 ha). Stands <5 ha were occupied later, and the proportion of unpaired males was higher there than in large stands (>5 ha). The known age distributions of breeding birds and breeding success were independent of forest patch size. Nest predation rate was not associated with stand size or nest distance from the forest edge. The preference of breeding birds for large forest patches was presumably related to the higher amount of resources (nest sites, mates, food) a large patch can offer for reproduction compared with a small patch. At the microhabitat level, territories of old males were characterized by relatively more deciduous trees that contained more invertebrate food than coniferous tree-dominated territories of yearling males. The reproductive success of old males, as measured by the number of fledged young per male, was higher than that of yearling males. This suggests that the larger body size and blacker plumage of old males possibly contributed to male dominance and that old males excluded younger males from preferred habitats through territorial behaviour. Our results suggest that habitat choice of the Pied Flycatcher was affected by both micro- and macrohabitat. On the basis of settlement pattern, density and reproductive success, the distribution of Pied Flycatchers across forest stands of different sizes followed the ideal-free distribution model, whereas at the microhabitat level, age-related unequal distribution of males followed the ideal-despotic model of Fretwell and Lucas.  相似文献

Harderian glands of Syrian hamsters contained measurable levels of immunoreactive somatostatin. After an extraction procedure, serial dilutions of tissue were assayed and showed parallelism in the displacement curve with dilutions of purified somatostatin standard in the radioimmunoassay. Somatostatin concentrations were higher in female hamsters (10.0 +/- 2.1 ng/mg protein) than in males (2.6 +/- 0.4 ng/mg protein). Castrated males had somatostatin values in the range of females (12.4 +/- 2.3 ng/mg protein) at 1 month after gonadectomy. Testosterone implants prevented the rise of Harderian gland somatostatin in castrated males. Gonadectomized males had lower somatostatin content in the gland than did control males (1.0 +/- 0.2 ng/mg protein) at 2 months after castration. Somatostatin values in females were unaffected by gonadectomy, but there were variations during the oestrous cycle, with a nadir detected at dioestrus-1 and maximal values coincident with the day of the ovulation.  相似文献
