Visualization tools for biological data are often limited in their ability to interactively integrate data at multiple scales. These computational tools are also typically limited by two-dimensional displays and programmatic implementations that require separate configurations for each of the user's computing devices and recompilation for functional expansion. Towards overcoming these limitations we have developed "ePlant" (http://bar.utoronto.ca/eplant) - a suite of open-source world wide web-based tools for the visualization of large-scale data sets from the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana. These tools display data spanning multiple biological scales on interactive three-dimensional models. Currently, ePlant consists of the following modules: a sequence conservation explorer that includes homology relationships and single nucleotide polymorphism data, a protein structure model explorer, a molecular interaction network explorer, a gene product subcellular localization explorer, and a gene expression pattern explorer. The ePlant's protein structure explorer module represents experimentally determined and theoretical structures covering >70% of the Arabidopsis proteome. The ePlant framework is accessed entirely through a web browser, and is therefore platform-independent. It can be applied to any model organism. To facilitate the development of three-dimensional displays of biological data on the world wide web we have established the "3D Data Display Initiative" (http://3ddi.org).  相似文献

The year 2007 commemorates the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Microbial World, the seminal microbiology textbook that shattered the microbiology world and whose first edition was coauthored by Roger Y. Stanier, Michael Doudoroff and Edward A. Adelberg. The year 2007 marks also twenty-five years of Stanier's passing away. The Spanish Society for Microbiology (SEM) with the support of Fundación Ramón Areces has organized a Symposium, in the frame of the 21st national congress of the SEM (Seville, 17-20 September 2007), to commemorate those anniversaries, and has invited us (Schaechter, Ingraham and Neidhardt) to contribute to this celebration.  相似文献

Despite the availability of rubella vaccine the incidence of the congenital rubella syndrome has been increasing in certain regions of Canada. Perhaps this is not surprising in view of the known irregular cyclic activity of rubella virus in a community and the fact that the percentage of seropositive women of childbearing age has not changed appreciable since the vaccine was introduced. Clearly vaccine is not being administered to sufficient numbers of women at risk. Until a much higher percentage of women of childbearing age possess rubella antibody, the costly problem of congenital rubella syndrome is likely to be with us. Common rubella problems relate to four categories: the exposed pregnant woman, laboratory diagnosis, the infant with suspected congenital rubella and the vaccine. One of the most common questions about the vaccine is the following: Can recently vaccinated individuals disseminate vaccine and infect seronegative contact? The answer is No.  相似文献

An immediate cellular response to DNA damage is the synthesis of poly(ADP-ribose) by the enzyme poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). This nuclear enzyme and the unique post-translational modification it catalyzes have long been considered to function exclusively in cellular surveillance of genotoxic stress. The recent identification of multiple members of a PARP family might force a revision of this concept. The novel primary structures and subcellular localizations for some of these PARPs suggests new and unexpected roles for poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation in telomere replication and cellular transport.  相似文献
