Six non-anaesthetized Large White pigs (mean body weight 59 +/- 1.7 kg) were fitted with permanent catheters in the portal vein, the brachiocephalic artery and the right hepatic vein and with electromagnetic flow probes around the portal vein and the hepatic artery. The animals were provided a basal none-fibre diet (diet A) alone or together with 6% guar gum (diet B) or 15% purified cellulose (diet C). The diets were given for 1 week and according to a replicated 3 x 3 latin-square design. On the last day of each adaptation period test meals of 800 g were given prior to blood sampling. The sampling was continued for 8 h. Guar gum strongly reduced the glucose absorption as well as the insulin, gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) production. However, the reduction in peripheral blood insulin levels caused by guar gum was not associated with a change in hepatic insulin extraction. IGF-1 appeared to be strongly produced by the gut. The liver had a net uptake of the peptide. Ingestion of guar gum increased the hepatic extraction coefficient of gut produced IGF-1. Guar gum ingestion also appeared to decrease pancreatic glucagon secretion. Cellulose at the level consumed had very little effect on the parameters considered. It is suggested that the modulation of intestinal mechanisms by guar gum was sufficient to mediate the latter internal metabolic effects.  相似文献

Forty-eight hours after undergoing a successful right carotid endarectomy a patient complained of headache in and behind the right eye radiating to the temple and forehead. The onset of headache was sudden, and the pain was severe and throbbing. After three weeks of regular four- to eight-hour attacks each day the headaches gradually became less frequent. Two months after operation they had disappeared completely. Headache as a complication of endarterectomy is rare, but typically it is vascular and subsides spontaneously in one to six months. If a predisposition to migraine were a precipitating factor many more cases would be expected. No possible explanation for for headache after carotid prearterectomy can account adequately for its apparent rarity.  相似文献

Carbamoylethylation of guar gum was carried out with acrylamide in presence of sodium hydroxide under different reaction conditions. Variables studied were concentration of sodium hydroxide, acrylamide, guar gum as well as reaction temperature and time. The nitrogen content, carboxyl content and total ether content were determined. Rheological properties of carbamoylethyl guar gum solutions showed non-Newtonian pseudoplastic behavior regardless of the %N. At a constant rate of shear, the apparent viscosity of carbamoylethyl guar gum solutions decreases with the increase in %N of the product.  相似文献

The rheological properties of aqueous solutions of guar gum (GG) and hydroxyethyl guar gum (HEG) have been investigated. The flow properties of these polysaccharide solutions were studied at the shear rate in the range 1.5–1310s−1 using a Rheotest-2 viscometer. The flow of these polysaccharide solutions was described by equation of state based on Cross model. The basic rheological parameters, like zero shear rate viscosity (ηo), elasticity modulus (Go) and relaxation time (glo) were calculated using simple and established relations. Master viscosity curves indicated that the molecular weight distribution of native guar gum has been changed by hydroxyethylation under specified reaction conditions. The effect of concentration and temperature on ηo and λo has been studied, and the relations among these were established by simple equations.  相似文献

The dietary effect of the water-soluble dietary fibers (WSDF), guar gum, partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG), glucomannan, highly methoxylated (HM) pectin, on the serum lipid level and immunoglobulin (Ig) production of Sprague-Dawley rats was compared with that of water-insoluble cellulose. Although serum total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly lower in the rats fed with WSDF than in those fed with cellulose, a decrease in the level of phospholipids was only observed in the rats that had been fed on guar gum or glucomannan. In addition, all WSDF feeding enhanced IgA productivity in the spleen and mesenteric lymph node lymphocytes, although the increase in serum IgA level was only observed in the rats fed on WSDF, and not on PHGG. When mesenteric lymph node lymphocytes were cultured in the presence of various concentrations of guar gum or glucomannan, no significant increase in Ig production was apparent. These data suggest that WSDF indirectly enhanced the Ig production of lymphocytes, and that serum lipid reduction and IgA production-enhancing activities of WSDF were dependent on their molecular sizes.  相似文献

Twenty men had their cerebral function measured preoperatively and three months after carotid endarterectomy using the Halstead-Reitan neuropsychological test battery. Thirteen patients were cerebrally impaired preoperatively, but 12 of them improved appreciably after surgery. Changes in internal carotid arterial blood flow measured preoperatively showed no significant correlation with the improvement in neuropsychological status. We think that carotid endarterectomy carries an even better prophylaxis for the brain as a whole than had been thought.  相似文献

In a study of the time course and nature of the sensory loss after cryosurgery the forearms of nine normal subjects were treated with liquid nitrogen using freeze times currently employed in clinical practice in Britain. Ability to appreciate touch, pinprick, and cold in the treated areas was tested at regular intervals and biopsy samples taken to investigate the pathogenesis. Appreciation of all three modalities of sensation was initially reduced in all nine subjects for all freeze times, yet complete recovery occurred in the seven patients completing follow up. This recovery, however, took up to one and a half years for the longest freeze, with even a 10 second freeze taking up to 10 months. Patients may be reassured that sensory loss after cryosurgery for up to two periods of 30 seconds will almost certainly recover, though it may take up to 18 months to do so.  相似文献

Thirty men treated in childhood with cyclophosphamide for a mean of 280 days were assessed at a mean of 12.8 years after treatment for hormone concentrations and spermatogenesis. Four were azoospermic, nine oligospermic, and 17 normospermic. There was a significant inverse correlation of sperm density with cyclophosphamide dosage and duration of treatment. After a further mean follow up of 7.2 years three patients who were previously oligospermic and one who was azoospermic had normal sperm counts. All patients had normal sexual characteristics and libido. Serum androgen and prolactin concentrations did not differ significantly between patients and controls. Raised basal and stimulated follicle stimulating hormone concentrations were in keeping with impaired spermatogenesis. All patients had significantly raised luteinising hormone responses on stimulation with luteinising hormone releasing hormone. The results suggest compensated Leydig cell failure, and patients with this condition require long term evaluation of testicular function. Potential recovery of spermatogenesis with time requires appropriate counselling and contraceptive advice.  相似文献

The rheological properties of aqueous solutions of hydroxyethyl guar gum, a synthetic derivative of guar gum, have been studied under continuous and oscillatory shear flow conditions. Data obtained from both experimental techniques were satisfactorily fitted according to Cross-type models. The effect of polymer concentration, molecular weight and temperature on the rheological behavior of hydroxyethyl guar gum systems have been investigated and discussed in terms of rheological parameters like the zero-shear viscosity η0 and the characteristic times λ and λ′.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To examine the long term survival of critically ill patients admitted to an intensive therapy unit and to ascertain the effects of age, severity of illness, and diagnostic category at admission on survival. DESIGN--Retrospective observational study with prospectively gathered data on all patients admitted to the unit between June 1985 and July 1987 and followed up until 1 January 1989. SETTING--Regional intensive therapy unit. PATIENTS--513 critically ill adult patients, 16 of whom were excluded because measurements on severity of illness scoring were not available. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Age, severity of illness (determined with the acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II score), and diagnostic category on admission; deaths in the unit; and long term survival after discharge. Details of the survivors were sent to the Registrar General for Scotland, who issued copies of death certificates for the patients who had died between discharge and 1 January 1989. RESULTS--Of 497 patients, 119 (24%) died in the intensive therapy unit and 120 (24%) after discharge, leaving 258 (52%) who were still alive at two years. The median (APACHE II) score was 13 and about half of the patients were aged 55 years or more. A wide range of critical illnesses, except neurosurgical emergencies, were treated. Survival analysis showed that only 41 (34%) of 122 patients with an APACHE II score of greater than or equal to 20 were alive at one year (95% confidence interval 25 to 42) compared with 124 (80%) of 155 patients with a score of less than 10 (73 to 87). Of the 144 patients aged 65 or more, only 68 (47%) survived to one year (39 to 55) but 90 (83%) of the 109 patients aged between 18 and 34 survived a similar period (76 to 71). Mortality was also related to diagnostic category; 71% of trauma victims survived to one year compared with only 41% of those admitted with gastrointestinal pathology. Univariate analysis of the results showed that age, severity of illness, and diagnosis were all predictors of long term survival. Multivariate analysis, however, showed that only age and severity of illness were independent prognostic factors. CONCLUSIONS--Long term survival of patients treated in an intensive therapy unit is related to severity of illness and to age. The outcome from critical illness in the elderly population is poor.  相似文献

Commercial guar gum (GG) was purified by four different methods and characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis and the determination of monosaccharides composition, protein and copper content, turbidity, intrinsic viscosity and rheological parameters. The first method was based on enzymatic hydrolysis with porcine pancreatin. In the second method successive gum dissolution, centrifugation and precipitation with acetone and ethanol were carried out. Precipitation with Fehling solution was employed in the third method. In the fourth method, the gum was purified by method 2 and then by method 3. All methods led to a reduction in protein content, arabinose and glucose residues, considered as sugar contaminants, and also in intrinsic viscosity and molar mass. Total elimination of protein was only achieved by method 4. Using methods 3 and 4, the gum was contaminated with small amounts of Cu(II) from the Fehling solution. Methods 2 and 4 apparently provided purer guar gum. If the amount of protein is a crucial parameter in the biological application and the guar will be taken in low amounts, method 4 is recommended. Taking into account the purity, thermal stability, rheological parameters of the purified gum and also the cost and simplicity of the procedure, method 2 has wider biological application.  相似文献

A new guar gum derivative containing amino group was synthesized through nucleophilic substitution of p-toluenesulfonate activated hydroxypropyl guar gum with ethanolamine. For the preparation of p-toluenesulfonate esters hydroxypropyl guar gum, the results showed that the reaction rate was optimal at 25°C and the reaction could reach equilibrium state when it was carried out for 10h at 25°C. For the nucleophilic substitution of tosyl group with ethanolamine, the reaction was completed after 10h reaction at 50°C. The structures of products were characterized by NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. The results showed that the p-toluenesulfonate esters can be effectively substituted by ethanolamine to form the hydroxyethyl amino hydroxypropyl guar gum (EAHPG). The content of nitrogen of EAHPG was determined by acid-base titration and element analysis.  相似文献

While cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death in elderly women, relatively little is known regarding the influence of menopause on atherogenesis. We tried to characterize postmenopausal changes in the arterial properties. A group of 72 postmenopausal women were classified into subgroups based on duration of the postmenopausal period (PMP): Group PM1 (1-2 years; n = 16), PM4 (2-6 years; n = 16), PM8 (6-10 years; n = 25), and PM12 (10-15 years; n = 15). The control group consisted of 24 volunteers with regular menstruation (PM0). The diameter pulse waveform and intima-media thickness (IMT) of the common carotid artery (CCA) was measured using a phase-locked echo tracking system coupled with B-mode ultrasonography. The stiffness index was calculated from the waveform and the systemic blood pressure. The cardiac contractile force and the cerebral perfusion were also estimated using the maximum incremental velocity (MIV) and the calculated blood flow, as well as the fasting lipid profile. When compared to control, significant and progressive increases were noted in total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (PM1, PM4, PM8, PM12), IMT (PM8, PM12), and SI (PM1, PM4, PM8, PM12). Further significant and progressive reductions were noted in pulse amplitude of CCA diameter (PM1, PM4, PM8, PM12) and MIV and cerebral perfusion (PM8, PM12). The postmenopausal increase in CCA stiffness as well as lipid profile occurs earlier than the increase in IMT and may be a more sensitive predictor of disorder on arterial property.  相似文献

Administration of LiCl (2-4 mmol/kg/day, po) to adult male albino rats for 7 consecutive days increased the catabolism of dopamine (DA) in striatum (ST) and noradrenaline (NA) in hypothalamus (H). Extension of the period of treatment with LiCl (2-4 mmol/kg/day, po) to 14 consecutive days increased catabolism of DA in CX (cerebral cortex) and PM (pons-medulla) and NA in H, and decreased metabolism of DA in ST and NA in PM. Further prolongation of treatment with LiCl (2 or 4 mmol/kg/day, po) for 21 consecutive days greatly affected DA and NA metabolism in the respective brain regions. These results, thus suggest that LiCl produces region specific differential action depending on its dosage and duration of treatment in catecholaminergic activity in rat brain.  相似文献

Noncatalytic hydrolysis of guar gum under hydrothermal conditions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Guar gum, a naturally occurring heteropolysaccharide made of mannose and galactose, was hydrolytically degraded without a catalyst in a batch reactor to produce water-soluble (WS) saccharides including mono- and oligosaccharides. The degradation was carried out under hydrothermal conditions over ranges of temperature from 180 to 240 degrees C and of reaction time from 3 to 60min. Guar gum was readily dissolved and hydrolyzed, and the major products identified in the WS components were oligosaccharides with degrees of polymerization up to about 20, monosaccharides containing mannose and galactose, and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF). At 200 degrees C, the oligosaccharide yield, obtained from the difference between the yields of the total WS saccharides and monosaccharides, showed the highest value of 94.4% at 7min among all conditions studied, on the basis of the saccharide content in the initial sample. The oligosaccharide yield decreased with reaction time, and the yield of monosaccharides correspondingly increased, and reached the highest value of 34.5% (mannose 22.8%, galactose 11.7%) at 60min. The monosaccharides produced were further decomposed to secondary products such as 5-HMF. The maximum yield of 5-HMF obtained was 26.3% at 220 degrees C and 30min. The production and the decomposition of galactose somewhat preceded those of mannose.  相似文献
