The carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic composition of the scalp hair and diet of Gidra-speaking people in four villages in Papua New Guinea is presented. The isotopic composition of hair was measured, while that of the diet was estimated from food consumption survey data and the measured isotopic composition and protein and carbohydrate contents of food items. The average isotopic ratios of the hair samples and of the diet varied among the four study villages, which were selected because of their diverse ecological settings. Comparison was made between hair and calculated dietary isotopic compositions. Two of the four diet-hair enrichment values obtained for 13C (+1.8 and 2.2%‰) were similar to those previously reported (1.4–2.0%‰), but the other two values (3.7 and 4.8%) were greater than in earlier reports. 15N enrichment was systematically greater (by 1%‰) than reported values (∼4.3%‰) except for one village, where a much greater enrichment (6.9%‰) was found. The factors potentially relevant to these deviations are discussed. Possible errors in estimating the dietary isotopic composition and minor modifications of dietary habits revealed by food consumption surveys could explain most of the discrepancies. However, the great enrichment of 15N found in one of the villages remains unexplained. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of a compound diet as a live prey substitute for feeding European sea bass larvae ( Dicentrarchus labrax L.). The effect of a commercial diet (Nippai ML feed) and live prey ( Artemia nauplii) on tryptic enzyme activity, protein content, growth (standard length) and survival rates of sea bass larvae were tested during a 27-day rearing experiment. Sea bass larvae were divided into two groups. The live food group (control group) was fed exclusively on newly hatched Artemia nauplii (Inve AF grade), the test group was fed exclusively with the compound diet from day 15 onwards. As trypsin has been demonstrated to be a useful indicator for evaluating digestibility of food and the nutritional condition of fish larvae, individual tryptic enzyme activity was determined in both feeding groups. Larvae older than 14 days after hatching and fed on live food showed a significantly higher tryptic enzyme activity than larvae fed the compound diet. A similar relationship between tryptic activity and standard length in both test groups was detected only in small larvae (standard length < 7 mm). The usefulness of proteolytic enzyme activity measurements in larval fish research, as well as its use in aquaculture nutrition research, was confirmed. Protein content, increase in length and survival rates of the sea bass larvae were additionally determined in order to evaluate an influence on the diet. The protein content of larvae fed the Artemia nauplii was higher and the growth of larvae fed the compound diet was reduced. Larval mortality was not affected by the diet given.  相似文献

Summary Survival and body composition of starving gypsy moth larvae initially reared on aspen foliage or artificial diet differeing in nitrogen (N) and carbohydrate concentration were examined under laboratory conditions. Diet nitrogen concentration strongly affected starvation resistance and body composition, but diet carbohydrate content had no effects on these. Within any single diet treatment, greater body mass afforded greater resistance to starvation. However, starving larvae reared on 1.5% N diet survived nearly three days longer than larvae reared on 3.5% N diet. Larvae reared on artificial diet survived longer than larvae reared on aspen. Differences in survival of larvae reared on artificial diet with low and high nitrogen concentrations could not be attributed to variation in respiration rates, but were associated with differences in body composition. Although percentage lipid in larvae was unaffected by diet nitrogen concentration, larvae reared on 1.5% N diet had a higher percentage carbohydrate and lower percentage protein in their bodies prior to starvation than larvae reared on 3.5% N diet. Hence, larger energy reserves of larvae reared on low nitrogen diet may have contributed to their greater starvation resistance. Whereas survival under food stress was lower for larvae reared on high N diets, growth rates and pupal weights were higher, suggesting a tradeoff between rapid growth and survival. Larger body size does not necessarily reflect larger energy reserves, and, in fact, larger body size accured via greater protein accumulation may be at the expense of energy reserves. Large, fast-growing larvae may be more fit when food is abundant, but this advantage may be severely diminished under food stress. The potential ecological and evolutionary implications of a growth/survival tradeoff are discussed.  相似文献

African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (B.), is one of the promising freshwater fish species in African aquaculture but the expansion of its farming needs more production of its larvae. The use of live food organisms at first feeding for larvae is still obligatory. That increases the cost of larvae production. Hence, the incorporating of exogenous enzymes especially protease in artificial microdiets may provide affordable alternatives for enhancing the larvae performance. The present study was carried out to evaluate the growth and survival of larvae or fingerlings of African catfish fed artificial diets incorporated with different protease levels. Four artificial diets were formulated and enriched with protease enzyme at levels of 0.0, 750, 1,000, and 1,250 unit/kg diet; after that diets were made into crumbles (100–200 µm diameter). After absorption of the yolk sac, diets were offered to fish larvae (3.6 ± 0.2 mg) in triplicates as a starter feed up to apparent satiation every two hours for 30 days. In another treatment, fish larvae were fed on newly hatched Artemia nauplii (2,500 Artemia/L) as a starter food. In another experiment, African catfish fingerlings (10.1 ± 1.6 g) were fed on the same diets up to satiation twice a day for 2 months. It was noticed that the dietary protease improved larval growth and survival but not as Artemia nauplii did where fish larvae fed on Artemia nauplii showed highest growth and survival followed by those fed a diet enriched with 1,250 unit/kg diet of protease. The mortality of larvae fed protease‐enriched diets as well as the control diet was occurred mostly at the first week reaching its maximum at the third week. The poor growth was observed with fish larvae fed the control diet. Meanwhile, catfish fingerlings fed protease‐enriched diets showed higher growth over those fed the control diet. The larvae survival (11.0%–41.7%) was enhanced by increasing protease levels and it was lower than that of fingerlings (95.6%–100.0%). Furthermore, protein retention and digestibility were significantly improved with protease supplementation over the control diet especially at a level of 1,000 unit/kg diet. As compared with the previous studies, live food should be used in larvae rearing for the first week after that a starter diet enriched with protease at levels of 1,250 unit/kg diet should be used. In case of fish fingerlings, the dry diets should be enriched with 1,100 unit/kg diet to improve diet digestibility and subsequently enhance their growth.  相似文献

Populations with different densities often show genetically based differences in life histories. The divergent life histories could be driven by several agents of selection, one of which is variation in per‐capita food levels. Its relationship with population density is complex, as it depends on overall food availability, individual metabolic demand, and food‐independent factors potentially affecting density, such as predation intensity. Here, we present a case study of two populations of a small live‐bearing freshwater fish, one characterized by high density, low predation risk, low overall food availability, and presumably low per‐capita food levels, and the other by low density, high predation risk, high overall food availability, and presumably high per‐capita food levels. Using a laboratory experiment, we examined whether fish from these populations respond differently to food limitation, and whether size at birth, a key trait with respect to density variation in this species, is associated with any such differential responses. While at the lower food level growth was slower, body size smaller, maturation delayed, and survival reduced in both populations, these fitness costs were smaller in fish from the high‐density population. At low food, only 15% of high‐density fish died, compared to 75% of low‐density fish. This difference was much smaller at high food (0% vs. 15% mortality). The increased survival of high‐density fish may, at least partly, be due to their larger size at birth. Moreover, being larger at birth enabled fish to mature relatively early even at the lower food level. We demonstrate that sensitivities to food limitation differ between study populations, consistent with selection for a greater ability to tolerate low per‐capita food availability in the high‐density population. While we cannot preclude other agents of selection from operating in these populations simultaneously, our results suggest that variation in per‐capita food levels is one of those agents.  相似文献

Abstract:  Several studies have shown that the mainly granivorous carabid beetles, e.g. Amara spp., include animal food in their diet to a considerable extent. We therefore hypothesized that the performance of these beetles would be enhanced by dietary mixing including both seeds and animal food. In order to test this, we conducted laboratory feeding experiments with adults and larvae of Amara similata . Both adults and larvae were subjected to different diet treatments including: seeds, houseflies, grasshoppers, earthworms, slugs and snails in pure and mixed diets. Larval survival, development time, pupal and teneral weights were used as indicators of food quality for the larvae. For the adult beetles, mass change was used as an indicator of food quality. We found seeds to be high-quality food, while all pure animal diets were of low quality for both adults and larvae. Animal foods added to the seed diet had both positive and negative effects. A mixed diet of all foods enhanced the mass gain of adults compared with the seed diet, but reduced larval performance dramatically. Earthworms and grasshoppers added to seeds increased the pupal and teneral weights, while reduced larval survival. Thus, A. similata is omnivorous with a mainly granivorous feeding habit. It may gain benefits on some fitness parameters and incur costs on others from preying or scavenging on animal food. Therefore, the overall fitness consequences of a mixed seed-animal diet are uncertain.  相似文献

The insidious flower bug, Orius insidiosus (Say) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) is an important surrogate species for assessing potential effects of plant-incorporated protectants (PIPs) on nontarget heterotrophic predators. In this study, a continuous dietary exposure system was optimized by assessing the effect of diet composition and age on the survival and development of nymphs of O. insidiosus. Greater than 85% control survival and an acceptable rate of development from nymph hatching to adult was achieved using 5-d-old nymphs at test initiation and a bee pollen-based diet supplemented with 25% Ephestia eggs. There was an unacceptable level of mortality (>40%) and/or a significantly prolonged development time when nymphs were <5 d old at test initiation. When 5-d-old nymphs were fed a bee pollen diet containing 25% Ephestia eggs and 100 μg/g potassium arsenate, time-dependent mortality was observed with a median lethal time (LT50) of 4.4 d and 100% mortality was observed after 10 d of feeding, indicating the effectiveness of the test system to detect adverse effects by dietary exposure. It is recommended that well-defined 5-d-old nymphs and an encapsulated bee pollen-based diet containing 25% ground Ephestia eggs be used in a Tier-I dietary feeding exposure assay for detecting potential effects of PIPs on O. insidiosus nymphs.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of inhibition of mevalonate biosynthesis on fertility and embryonic survival in laying chickens. White Leghorn hens were fed for 5 weeks with a control diet alone or a diet supplemented with one of two concentrations (0.03 or 0.06%) of the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitors atorvastatin, lovastatin or simvastatin. The hens were artificially inseminated once a week and eggs that were not analysed for cholesterol content were incubated. When averaged across dietary groups and expressed as a percentage of all eggs incubated, the incidence of unfertilized eggs was 1.6% (controls), 29.1% (atorvastatin), 4.4% (lovastatin) and 7.9% (simvastatin). In contrast, with the exception of lower values for birds fed 0.06% atorvastatin, all groups had comparable hatchabilities of fertilized eggs. Hatchability of all eggs incubated was decreased in both atorvastatin groups compared with the other treatments. However, embryonic mortality of fertilized eggs was unaffected (P > 0.05) by diet. Compared with controls, maximum decreases in egg cholesterol of 46, 22 and 7% were obtained with atorvastatin, lovastatin and simvastatin, respectively. Although the overall correlation of egg cholesterol content with hatchability was high (r = 0.82), the hatch rate of eggs containing approximately 105 mg cholesterol ranged from 0 to 67%, indicating that egg cholesterol content was not the only factor influencing embryo survival. This is the first study to indicate that a mevalonate-derived product or products plays an important role in avian fertility. In addition, this work challenges the contention that virtually all of the cholesterol in chicken egg yolk is essential for embryonic development and survival.  相似文献

Ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) are important components of soil ecosystems in temperate zones, but our knowledge regarding the ecology of many species is limited. This study examined larval food habits in the ground beetle Amara (Curtonotus) gigantea (Motschulsky) using laboratory‐rearing experiments. Because this beetle is a member of the tribe Zabrini, which includes several species that exhibit granivory during larval and/or adult stages, three diet types were tested, with starvation as a control: Tenebrio larvae, mixed seeds (Bidens pilosa (Asteraceae), Setaria spp., Digitaria ciliaris (both Poaceae), and Humulus scandens (Moraceae)), and Tenebrio larvae + mixed seeds. Because of high larval mortality during overwintering under laboratory‐rearing conditions, survival and the duration of development through pre‐overwintering stages (first and second instars) were compared. Larvae fed the diet of Tenebrio larvae + mixed seeds showed the highest survival (89%), followed by the diet of Tenebrio larvae (83%), but the difference between the two treatments was not significant; similarly, developmental durations did not differ between these two diets. Larvae fed the mixed‐seeds diet showed markedly lower survival, and no larvae reached the second instar. Therefore, for A. gigantea larvae, animal food results in high larval performance, whereas seeds provide a low value diet; animal food is essential for larval development, but seeds provide no benefit, even as a dietary supplement. Overall, the present results suggest that A. gigantea larvae are omnivorous but with a mainly carnivorous food habit.  相似文献

The diet of entomophagous coccinellids is mainly based on aphids and other food sources such as pollen, nectar, or fungal spores. Knowledge of their foraging behavior on plants infected by powdery mildew and their survival on fungal spores is currently limited. In this study, we investigated the olfactory response of Coccinella septempunctata to odor emission of barley plants infected by powdery mildew and their survival on fungal spores in the presence or absence of aphids. Odors released by powdery-mildew infected plants were more attractive for ladybirds compared to those of uninfected controls. After 3 days, the survival rate of ladybirds feeding only on powdery-mildew spores was less than 50%, while for ladybirds feeding exclusively on Rhopalosiphum padi aphids, the survival rate was close to 90%. After 15 days, the highest survival rate (almost 80%) was observed for ladybirds feeding on plants with both aphids and powdery mildew. Molecular analyses confirmed the presence of fungal spores in ladybird guts when feeding either on powdery mildew or on a mixed diet. Our results provide new insights into foraging behavior of entomophagous coccinellids revealing the potential of powdery mildew to be utilized as important non-essential food in a mixed diet, but also its lethal effect if consumed alone.  相似文献

  • 1 The effect of tannins and monoterpenes on the development, mortality and food utilization of spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was investigated under laboratory conditions using an artificial diet. Tannins were extracted from balsam fir foliage of thinned and unthinned stands to reproduce stand thinning related variations in tannins. A mixture of synthetic monoterpenes was utilized to simulate the concentration found in young and old balsam fir trees.
  • 2 Longer development time and lower pupal weight were observed for insects fed on diets with a lower nitrogen concentration and a higher tannin concentration (unthinned treatment). Tannins induced higher insect mortality at a low nitrogen concentration compared with the diet with a higher nitrogen concentration.
  • 3 Approximate digestibility was higher for larvae fed on diets with high concentrations of nitrogen at both low and high concentrations of tannins. Efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) decreased with an increase in tannin concentration. Tannins reduced both the relative consumption and growth rate (RCR and RGR).
  • 4 Monoterpenes increased spruce budworm mortality and this mortality reached almost 50% under concentrations of monoterpene typical of the young trees compared with 20% under monoterpene concentrations found in old trees.
  • 5 A higher digestibility was observed for larvae fed on diet with a higher concentration of monoterpenes, whereas efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), ECD, RCR, and RGR decreased with an increase in monoterpenes in the diet.
  • 6 The results obtained in the present study are consistent with the defensive role of secondary compounds such as tannins and monoterpenes in the spruce budworm–balsam fir system.

The interactions among white spruce, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, purified acetone tannin extracts (hydrolyzable and condensed tannin), Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki Cry1A(c) delta-endotoxin strain HD-73 (Btk), and spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) on larval survival, growth, and development were investigated over the whole larval feeding period by using artificial diet supplemented with three concentrations of Btk toxins per milliliter of diet (0, 0.021, and 1.72 microg/ml) and three concentrations of foliar tannin extract (0, 8, and 15% dry mass basis). At high Btk concentration, tannin antagonized Btk potency against spruce budworm by lowering Btk-related larval mortality from 83 to 43%. At moderate Btk concentration tannin did not affect Btk potency. Host tree tannins antagonized not only the lethal effects of Btk toxin but also sublethal Btk-related impacts in terms of larval development, pupal weight, relative consumption rate, and growth rate. When alone in the diet, tannin negatively affected larval survival, growth, and development. Maximum potency of tannins against spruce budworm larvae (60% mortality) was reached at dietary concentrations corresponding to what is found in the plant (8% dry mass). The addition of Btk toxin in food containing tannin reduced percentage of larval mortality by one-third, indicating that Btk toxin can antagonize tannin potency against the insect. Development of Btk transgenic spruce trees should consider the antagonistic effect the toxin may have on the resistance conferred by tannins that have evolved naturally in spruce trees.  相似文献

Increased terrestrial pup mortality in small colonies due to harassment by subadult males has been proposed as a mechanism to explain the stagnation of South American sea lion populations after sealing ended. To test this hypothesis, pup survival rate was assessed in five northern Patagonia colonies with different sizes. Female diet quality as well as pup growth rate and immune status from the largest and smallest of these colonies were also assessed. Results indicated that the pup survival rate increased with colony size and pup‐to‐subadult male ratio. Furthermore, pups grew faster in the smallest colony, although female diet composition and pup immune status did not differ between the two colonies. Inverse relationship between pup growth rate and survival rate indicated that mortality was independent of food supply. In absence of terrestrial predators, infanticide by subadult males is the only mortality source other than starvation and illness and the relationship between pup survival rate and pup‐to‐subadult male ratio approached a type II functional response curve. Thus, infanticide stands as the most likely reason for the observed positive relationship between colony size and pup survival rate, supporting the hypothesis that post‐sealing population stasis was caused by inverse density dependence.  相似文献

Background

Dietary factors are known to influence colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, however, their association with CRC survival is unclear. Therefore, we prospectively examined the association between diet quality scores, dietary patterns and colorectal cancer (CRC) survival.

Methods

1201 women diagnosed with stage I–III CRC between 1986 and 2008, were followed through 2010. Diet was assessed via a food frequency questionnaire administered at least 6 months after diagnosis. We computed the Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010), alternate Mediterranean Diet score (aMED) and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension score (DASH) and derived two dietary patterns, Western (unhealthy) and prudent (healthy), by principal component analysis for each woman.

Results

During follow-up, we documented 435 deaths, including 162 from CRC. After adjusting for potential confounders, only a higher AHEI-2010 score was significantly associated with lower overall mortality (HR comparing extreme quintiles = 0.71, 95% CI 0.52–0.98, p trend = 0.01) as well as borderline significantly with lower risk of CRC mortality by the trend test (HR Q5 vs Q1 = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.43–1.21, p trend = 0.07). When AHEI-2010 components were examined separately, inverse associations for overall mortality were primarily accounted for by moderate alcohol intake (HR comparing abstainers vs 5–15 g/d = 1.30, 95%CI = 1.05–1.61) and lower intake of sugar sweetened beverages and fruit juices combined (HR for each additional serving = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.01–1.23). No other diet quality score or dietary pattern was associated with overall or CRC-specific mortality.

Conclusion

Higher AHEI-2010 score may be associated with lower overall mortality, moderate alcohol consumption and lower consumption of sugar sweetened beverages and juices combined appeared to account for most of the observed associations.  相似文献

Mediterranean amberjack Seriola dumerili (Risso 1810) has aquaculture potential. The growth rate and food conversion ratio of S. dumerili on three different types of food (A: 100% frozen sardines; B: 50% frozen sardines and 50% pellet; C: 100% pellet) were measured, and analysed with respect to temperature, condition index and chemical composition of the fish fillet. Wild S. dumerili, average body weight 248 g and average total length 26.9 cm were caught in August and September 1994 in the South Adriatic Sea near Dubrovnik, Croatia and kept in three tanks (n=15 in each tank; duration of experiment, 226 days). The fish that were fed on diet A [initial weight, 252 ± 71 g; total length (TL), 24.3 ± 2.6 cm] started feeding immediately; however, fish assigned to diet C began to feed entirely on the pelleted diet 1 month after the start of the experiment. The mortality of fish fed on diet A was negligible, the registered growth rate was 313 ± 74 g (124.2%), specific growth rate was 0.32% day?1 and the food conversion rate was 6.7. The fish fed on diet B (initial weight, 246 ± 74 g; TL, 28.2 ± 2.5 cm) started to feed on day 3 and achieved a total growth rate of about 98% (final weight gain, 241 ± 69 g) and specific growth rate of 0.24% day?1 (feed conversion rate of 9.00 and mortality 13%). The fish fed on diet C (initial weight, 246 ± 74 g; TL, 28.2 ± 2.5 cm) started to feed on the pellets after 1 month and had a growth rate of 87% (weight gain 214 ± 85 g), a specific growth rate of 0.24% day?1 and a food conversion rate of 10.6 with considerable mortality (27%). In all three diet groups the fish grew with considerable variation in food consumption and growth rate, depending on seasonal temperature variations of the ambient sea water supplied to the rearing tanks. Chemical analysis showed that the protein level (amount) in the fish meat exceeded 20% in all three fish fillet samples.  相似文献

Abstract:  The quality of two aphid species ( Rhopalosiphum padi and Sitobion avenae ) as food for the staphylinid generalist predator Tachyporus hypnorum was investigated. Fruit flies ( Drosophila melanogaster ) were used as prey for comparison. T. hypnorum has been reported to prey on aphids, to consume large quantities and to show a high preference for aphids. This study showed that compared with fruit flies aphids are not high-quality prey for neither adult females nor larvae of T. hypnorum . Larvae were less able to utilize aphids than adult females. Reproduction was affected by both aphid species; a diet of S. avenae reduced fecundity, and a diet of R. padi reduced egg hatching success and prolonged the time spent in the egg stage compared with a fruit fly diet. For the T. hypnorum larvae pure diets of both S. avenae and R. padi resulted in high larval mortality. Overall ranking of the three prey types based on several fitness parameters differed between larvae and adults. The adult fitness parameters gave rather conflicting rankings of all three prey types though the two aphid species were of approximately the same overall value, whereas the larval fitness parameters gave identical rankings: D. melanogaster  >  S. avenae  >  R. padi . In the larval stage survival was greatly reduced by both aphid diets, while this was not the case for the adult females.  相似文献

A 4-week feeding trial on 22 grey partridges Perdix perdix was conducted in this study. Seven birds were fed commercial poultry food, seven natural food and eight commercial poultry food containing 6% of quebracho-tannin. Our results suggest that 6% dietary tannin, when added to a commercial food with high protein content, effects the grey partridge only slightly. No difference was seen in food consumption and body mass remained stable. However, birds fed tannin had longer small intestines, which most probably indicate gastrointestinal detoxication. They also excreted a high amount of tannin in their faeces. In addition, no between-group variation was seen in cytochrome P450 enzymes. Birds fed natural food had high concentration of nitrogen in intestinal excreta and high plasma alanine concentrations. They also suffered a rapid decrease in body mass after the change in diet and their body mass remained low. This may indicate increased protein excretion and/or catabolism of endogenous nutrient reserves. Potential short-term effects of the change in diet were seen in plasma. These findings coincide with the high mortality period of birds released into the wild.  相似文献
