The commercial harvest of floating kelps has promise as a business opportunity that could be especially valuable for small communities in southeast Alaska. The giant kelp, Macrocystis, is harvested mainly for the commercial herring roe‐on‐kelp harvest in Alaska. In addition, in southeast Alaska the two other species of floating kelps, Nereocystis luetkeana and Alaria fistulosa, have been commercially harvested since 1992 for use as agrochemicals by the Alaska KelpCo. The continued existence of this company and others that may wish to harvest seaweeds on a commercial basis is threatened by the lack of a kelp harvest management system in Alaska. The objective of this research is to develop a reliable and cost effective method for estimating the aerial extent and the standing crop biomass of the floating kelps in SE Alaska. We are employing an aerial multispectral imaging system that can be flown at varying altitudes to achieve spatial resolutions ranging from 0.5 to 2 meters. We are investigating whether the three species have unique spectral or textural characteristics in the multispectral imagery that can be used to differentiate the populations. The end products for this project will be kelp resource maps that delineate the spatial extent and biomass of kelp populations within the beds and a methodology for assessing kelp beds with mixed species composition. These products will find use by resource managers such as the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the Department of Natural Resources.  相似文献

Photographs and maps of the floating canopy of the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, provide an important data source to monitor nearshore water quality in southern California. Declines in water quality related to turbidity from coastal development, ocean discharges, and non-point source runoff have caused reductions in the areal extent of these kelp beds. Historically the kelp beds have been monitored by a variety of methods including small format infrared and color photography. New digital remote sensing instruments combined with geographical information system (GIS) databases offer an efficient method for collecting and analyzing data on changes in kelp bed size and location. SPOT satellite imagery has been found to provide adequate resolution for mapping the larger beds of giant kelp along the California coast. Beds smaller than 10 ha are not resolved well with SPOT imagery and need to be mapped with a resolution greater than the 20 m pixel size provided by the SPOT multispectral imagery. Imagery from a prototype of the Positive Systems ADAR system, an airplane mounted multispectral video sensor, provided a spatial resolution of 2.3 m in 4 spectral bands. ADAR imagery taken on 2 October 1991 of the San Onofre Kelp Bed in northern San Diego County showed 39% more kelp than small format color infrared photography made during the same time period.  相似文献

Kelp species provide many ecosystem services associated with their three-dimensional structures. Among these, fast-growth, canopy-forming species, like giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera, are the foundation of kelp forests across many temperate reefs. Giant kelp populations have experienced regional declines in different parts of the world. Giant kelp canopy is very dynamic and can take years to recover from disturbance, challenging comparisons of standing biomass with historical baselines. The Santa Barbara Coastal LTER (SBC LTER), curates a time series of Landsat sensed surface cover and biomass for giant kelp in the west coast of North America. In the last decade, this resource has been fundamental to understanding the species' population dynamics and drivers. However, simple ready-to-use summary statistics aimed at classifying regional kelp decline or recovery are not readily available to stakeholders and coastal managers. To this end, we describe here two simple metrics made available through the R package kelpdecline. First, the proportion of Landsat pixels in decline (PPD), in which current biomass is compared with a historical baseline, and second, a pixel occupancy trend (POT), in which current year pixel occupancy is compared to the time-series long probability of occupancy. The package produces raster maps and output tables summarizing kelp decline and trends over a 0.25 × 0.25° scale. Using kelpdecline, we show how sensitivity analysis on PPD parameter variation can increase the confidence of kelp decline estimates.  相似文献

Ungava Bay is ice covered 6–7 months of the year and evidence of ice scouring of seaweeds is extensive in the intertidal and shallow subtidal. Maximum tidal amplitudes of 16 m, among the highest in Canadian waters, compound this impact. Despite this level of annual perturbation, very extensive and dense beds of fucoids in the intertidal and laminarians in the subtidal are common on the western shores of Ungava Bay. Ground surveys of 24 intertidal stations combined with satellite images delineated 82,000 tons standing crop of Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus evanescens in Payne Bay, of which 36,000 tons were considered harvestable. Subtidally, kelp cover reached peak biomass at 5–10 m consisting of three primary species, Saccharina longicruris, Laminaria digitata, and Laminaria solidungula. In the area of Payne Bay, kelp beds of 100 ha were common, averaging 9–12 kg m−2 wet weight. The productivity of brown algae at these latitudes has been assumed to be low relative to southern latitudes. Direct measurement of lineal growth indicates productivity is intermediate between arctic and temperate populations. The potential for medium level industrial harvest exists under conservative management strategies within the constraints of subarctic logistics.  相似文献

The artificial culture of Macrocystis integrifolia in southeastern Alaskan waters has been initiated as a first step in a project to augment the existing herring roe-on-kelp fishery in the state. The growing of Macrocystis in Prince William Sound has the potential of considerably enhancing this fishery by eliminating the costly importation of this kelp from southeast Alaska. In an ongoing feasibility study, Macrocystis has been cultured under laboratory conditions through the embryonic sporophyte stage and outplanted in waters near Sitka, Alaska (57° N). Growth of the outplanted kelps has been monitored as a function of the time and depth of the outplanting. Preliminary results suggest that light is limiting for growth in winter and that the optimal depth for outplanting will vary with the season.  相似文献

In South Africa, more than 7000 t (f wt) of kelp (Ecklonia maxima) fronds are harvested annually to feed cultured abalone. Carpoblepharis flaccida, Gelidium vittatum and Polysiphonia virgata are conspicuous red algal epiphytes on older kelps and provide habitat and food for numerous animals. Over 4.5 y, we examined the effects of one destructive harvest of E. maxima on these 3 epiphytes. Two 20 × 20 m plots of kelp with similar epiphyte loads were demarcated. In one, all E. maxima sporophytes with stipes longer than 50 cm were harvested. The other plot served as a control. After 2.5 y the biomass of E. maxima in the harvested plot had recovered to control levels, but the epiphyte load (g epiphytes. Kg kelp−1) was statistically lower in the harvested plot after 2.5 and 3.5 y, and only recovered after 4.5 y. While most commercial harvesters cut through the “heads” (primary blades) of the kelp, effectively killing them, a new, non-lethal method removes secondary blades 20–30 cm from their bases, leaving the meristems and primary blades intact. At 5 sites studied, G. vittatum and P. virgata were found almost entirely on stipes and primary blades, and harvesting only distal parts of secondary blades limited losses to about 50% of C. flaccida biomass. To protect epiphytes, non-lethal harvesting is recommended and permanent non-harvest zones have been established in addition to limiting kelp yields and disallowing harvesting in Marine Protected Areas.  相似文献

The Asian kelp Undaria pinnatifida was discovered in southern California in the spring of 2000, and by the summer of 2001 had been collected at several California sites from Los Angeles to Long Beach Harbors and Catalina Island as far north as Monterey Harbor. From its native range in the northwestern Pacific, Undaria has now been introduced to the northeastern and southwestern Atlantic and the southwestern and northeastern Pacific, through a combination of intentional transport for cultivation, accidental transport with oysters, as fouling on vessel hulls, and possibly other means. In the northeastern Pacific, water temperatures are suitable for its establishment from at least Baja California to British Columbia, where it is likely to grow well in sheltered and partially sheltered waters.  相似文献

The Japanese kelp Undaria pinnatifida was found on 7th September 2005 in Ría Deseado (Santa Cruz, Argentina). This invasive algae was registered from the lower intertidal to the upper levels of the subtidal zone. The sporophytes were fixed to slabs, gravel and rocks of variable sizes and were also present as epibionts of tunicates. The sporophytes total length ranged between 3 and 88 cm, with a mean of 28.75 cm in the intertidal and 38.3 cm in the subtidal. The density and biomass increased from the intertidal to the subtidal. The kelp population showed a higher number of small immature individuals in the intertidal than␣subtidal where the organisms were bigger and with more individual biomass. This first record of U. pinnatifida in Southern Patagonia extends its southern distribution limit in Argentina, showing progressive expansion in the southwestern Atlantic. More surveys must be conducted to understand the evolution of U. pinnatifida invasion and its impact on the native benthic community.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was designed to test the effects of two kelp(Macrocystis integrifolia andEcklonia maxima) concentrates, when prepared as foliar sprays, upon bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) growth and N nutrition under three soil moisture regimes. Plant growth and developmental responses in this greenhouse experiment have demonstrated the effectiveness of the two kelp foliar sprays as plant growth regulating substances. Bean growth and developmental responses to the kelp foliar spray treatments were dependent upon the soil moisture regime to which they have been subjected. Although the two kelp foliar sprays had varying and sometimes contrasting effects on bean growth and N nutrition, which were dependent on the soil moisture treatment, their developmental effects upon the number of nodes, shoot/root ratio, leaf area ratio and specific leaf area were quite similar. A soybean callus bioassay demonstrated the presence of cytokinin-like substances and a callus growth antagonist in the kelp concentrate. Increasing dilution of the kelp concentrate disproportionately reduced the callus growth antagonist relative to the growth promoting or cytokinin-like activity.  相似文献

Coastal marine ecosystems are threatened by a range of anthropogenic stressors, operating at global, local, and temporal scales. We investigated the impact of marine heatwaves (MHWs) combined with decreased light availability over two seasons on the ecophysiological responses of three kelp species (Laminaria digitata, L. hyperborea, and L. ochroleuca). These species function as important habitat-forming foundation organisms in the northeast Atlantic and have distinct but overlapping latitudinal distributions and thermal niches. Under low-light conditions, summertime MHWs induced significant declines in biomass, blade surface area, and Fv/Fm values (a measure of photosynthetic efficiency) in the cool-water kelps L. digitata and L. hyperborea, albeit to varying degrees. Under high-light conditions, all species were largely resistant to simulated MHW activity. In springtime, MHWs had minimal impacts and in some cases promoted kelp performance, while reduced light availability resulted in lower growth rates. While some species were negatively affected by summer MHWs under low-light conditions (particularly L. digitata), they were generally resilient to MHWs under high-light conditions. As such, maintaining good environmental quality and water clarity may increase resilience of populations to summertime MHWs. Our study informs predictions of how habitat-forming foundation kelp species will be affected by interacting, concurrent stressors, typical of compound events that are intensifying under anthropogenic climate change.  相似文献

Chile is an important producer of brown seaweeds representing 10% of world supply. Landings of Chilean kelp fluctuated between 40,000 t.year−1 in the early ‘80s to 250,000 t.year−1 more recently. Commercialized algae come from natural populations and no mass-cultures of involved species have been established. Four species of brown algae are commercially collected in the country: Lessonia trabeculata, L. nigrescens, Macrocystis pyrifera and M. integrifolia. Since 2000, the demand of alginate sources and food for cultivated abalones dramatically raised the harvesting of these species. Direct evaluations of Lessonia spp. and Macrocystis standing-stocks were made along 700 km of coast in northern Chile. Lessonia spp. estimated populations exceed 900,000 t, whereas M. integrifolia does not exceed 300 t. The insights provided indicate that sustainability of Chilean kelp subjected to intense harvesting would require management programs including the following bio-ecological recommendations: (1) to harvest the entire plant including the holdfast; (2) to harvest plants larger than 20 cm in diameter; (3) to harvest plants sparsely, selecting mayor specimens; (4) rotation of harvesting areas; and (5) for Macrocystis, to cut the canopy 1–2 m from the surface. They must be implemented in a National Program of Kelp Management, elaborated by government, scientists, fisherman, and industry.  相似文献

This study assessed the possibility of using drift and subtidal seaweeds from St Lawrence Island, Alaska (lat. 63°N) for sale by the native population after simple processing. Over 125 km of coastline were surveyed for distribution of both drift and subtidal seaweeds. Drift seaweed wet weight densities ranged from 0.2 to over 9 kg m−2, with an average of over 4 t km−1 in the areas sampled. Attached, benthic seaweed densities ranged from 0.15 to 0.32 kg m−2. Thirty and 35% of the biomass was composed of Agarum cribrosum and species of Laminaria, respectively, both as drift and as benthic seaweed. Data from tagged Laminaria indicated that growth rates were relatively slow for most of the year. The drift seaweed resource on the coasts south and west of the city of Gambell appeared to have good potential for a small-scale commercial harvest. (*author for correspondence)  相似文献

Kelp are important primary producers that are colonized by diverse microbes that can have both positive and negative effects on their hosts. The kelp microbiome could support the burgeoning kelp cultivation sector by improving host growth, stress tolerance, and resistance to disease. Fundamental questions about the cultivated kelp microbiome still need to be addressed before microbiome-based approaches can be developed. A critical knowledge gap is how cultivated kelp microbiomes change as hosts grow, particularly following outplanting to sites that vary in abiotic conditions and microbial source pools. In this study we assessed if microbes that colonize kelp in the nursery stage persist after outplanting. We characterized microbiome succession over time on two species of kelp, Alaria marginata and Saccharina latissima, outplanted to open ocean cultivation sites in multiple geographic locations. We tested for host-species specificity of the microbiome and the effect of different abiotic conditions and microbial source pools on kelp microbiome stability during the cultivation process. We found the microbiome of kelp in the nursery is distinct from that of outplanted kelp. Few bacteria persisted on kelp following outplanting. Instead, we identified significant microbiome differences correlated with host species and microbial source pools at each cultivation site. Microbiome variation related to sampling month also indicates that seasonality in host and/or abiotic factors may influence temporal succession and microbiome turnover in cultivated kelps. This study provides a baseline understanding of microbiome dynamics during kelp cultivation and highlights research needs for applying microbiome manipulation to kelp cultivation.  相似文献

Sustainable fisheries require (1) viable stock populations with appropriate harvest limits and (2) appropriate habitat for fish to survive, forage, seek refuge, grow and reproduce. Some deep-water habitats, such as those formed by deep-water stands of coral, may be vulnerable to fishing disturbance. The rate at which habitat can be restored is a critical aspect of fishery management. The purpose of this study was to characterize growth rates for a habitat-forming deep-sea coral. Two nearly complete colonies of red tree coral (Primnoa resedaeformis) collected from waters off southeast Alaska were used for an analysis of age and growth characteristics. CAT scans revealed that colonies consisted of multiple settlement events, where older basal structures provided for settlement of new colonies. The decay of 210Pb over the length of the colony was used to validate age estimates from growth ring counts. Age estimates were over 100 yr for sections near the heavily calcified base. Based on validated growth ring counts, growth of red tree coral ranged from 1.60 to 2.32 cm per year in height and was approximately 0.36 mm per year in diameter. These growth rates suggest that the fishery habitat created by red tree coral is extremely vulnerable to bottom fishing activities and may take over 100 years to recover.  相似文献

Recent changes in kelp distribution along the north coast of Spain are described and analysed through a long-term population study focused on Saccorhiza polyschides. The main purpose of this work was to understand which population processes are more sensitive to increased sea surface temperatures and reductions in the intensity of upwelling episodes in the current scenario of global warming. Data on the distribution of kelp species (old and recent data) were obtained from the literature and compared with current species distributions assessed by field sampling between 2007 and 2010 and covering a transition coastline of 200 km. The long-term population study of Saccorhiza polyschides was conducted at a site close to the edge of its current distribution. Data for recruitment, growth and survival, as well as density and supported biomass of populations collected since the 1990s were analysed using data from the late 1970s for comparison. Kelps on the north coast of Spain have shown a westward retreat since the 1980s. Dense populations of Saccorhiza polyschides, the most important species, and Laminaria ochroleuca have been reduced to small patches and isolated individuals east of Peñas Cape (43° 39.4′ N; 5° 50.8′ W). The long-term study of Saccorhiza polyschides populations showed a collapse in the growth of the sporophyte and very low recruitment from the beginning of this century. The possible causal factors of this population decline and its consequences are considered, suggesting that long warm summer periods (more than 30 consecutive days of seawater temperature?>?20°C) could alter kelp performance.  相似文献

Herbivore foraging decisions are closely related to plant nutritional quality. For arboreal folivores with specialized diets, such as the vulnerable greater glider (Petauroides volans), the abundance of suitable forage trees can influence habitat suitability and species occurrence. The ability to model and map foliar nitrogen would therefore enhance our understanding of folivore habitat use at finer scales. We tested whether high‐resolution multispectral imagery, collected by a lightweight and low‐cost commercial unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV), could be used to predict total and digestible foliar nitrogen (N and digN) at the tree canopy level and forest stand‐scale from leaf‐scale chemistry measurements across a gradient of mixed‐species Eucalyptus forests in southeastern Australia. We surveyed temperate Eucalyptus forests across an elevational and topographic gradient from sea level to high elevation (50–1200 m a.s.l.) for forest structure, leaf chemistry, and greater glider occurrence. Using measures of multispectral leaf reflectance and spectral indices, we estimated N and digN and mapped N and favorable feeding habitat using machine learning algorithms. Our surveys covered 17 Eucalyptus species ranging in foliar N from 0.63% to 1.92% dry matter (DM) and digN from 0.45% to 1.73% DM. Both multispectral leaf reflectance and spectral indices were strong predictors for N and digN in model cross‐validation. At the tree level, 79% of variability between observed and predicted measures of nitrogen was explained. A spatial supervised classification model correctly identified 80% of canopy pixels associated with high N concentrations (≥1% DM). We developed a successful method for estimating foliar nitrogen of a range of temperate Eucalyptus species using UAV multispectral imagery at the tree canopy level and stand scale. The ability to spatially quantify feeding habitat using UAV imagery allows remote assessments of greater glider habitat at a scale relevant to support ground surveys, management, and conservation for the vulnerable greater glider across southeastern Australia.  相似文献

This paper describes a method to study the diversity of young kelp sporophytes that are recruited from the bank of microscopic stages. Small samples of rocky substratum (0.5 cm2) were collected from the low intertidal zone, which was dominated by the kelp Laminaria digitata. Samples were cultivated in the laboratory under conditions permitting gametogenesis. Sporophyte recruits in the cultures were isolated and identified at the species level using the barcoding mitochondrial marker rpl31–rns. Sixty per cent of the collected samples had at least one to a maximum of 30 kelp recruits, belonging to five different species (L. digitata, L. hyperborea, L. ochroleuca, Saccharina latissima and Sacchorhiza polyschides). As the examination of freshly collected rocky samples under a stereo microscope did not reveal any kelp sporophytes, the recruitment in these samples after culture probably occurred from the bank of microscopic forms present on the substratum. Despite the dominance of L. digitata in the field, the young sporophytes obtained after culturing were mainly S. polyschides. This study illustrates the suitability of culturing in combination with molecular identification of young sporophytes to address several key aspects of kelp ecology related to the existence of a bank of microscopic stages in the field.  相似文献

Climate change is affecting marine ecosystems in many ways, including raising temperatures and leading to ocean acidification. From 2014 to 2016, an extensive marine heat wave extended along the west coast of North America and had devastating effects on numerous species, including bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana). Bull kelp is an important foundation species in coastal ecosystems and can be affected by marine heat waves and ocean acidification; however, the impacts have not been investigated on sensitive early life stages. To determine the effects of changing temperatures and carbonate levels on Northern California's bull kelp populations, we collected sporophylls from mature bull kelp individuals in Point Arena, CA. At the Bodega Marine Laboratory, we released spores from field-collected bull kelp, and cultured microscopic gametophytes in a common garden experiment with a fully factorial design crossing modern conditions (11.63 ± 0.54°C and pH 7.93 ± 0.26) with observed extreme climate conditions (15.56 ± 0.83°C and 7.64 ± 0.32 pH). Our results indicated that both increased temperature and decreased pH influenced growth and egg production of bull kelp microscopic stages. Increased temperature resulted in decreased gametophyte survival and offspring production. In contrast, decreased pH had less of an effect but resulted in increased gametophyte survival and offspring production. Additionally, increased temperature significantly impacted reproductive timing by causing female gametophytes to produce offspring earlier than under ambient temperature conditions. Our findings can inform better predictions of the impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems and provide key insights into environmental dynamics regulating the bull kelp lifecycle.  相似文献
