Summary There is an ontogenetic increase in the time that garter snakes (Thamnophis s. sirtalis) can maintain maximum activity at 25°C. Newborn snakes are exhausted by 3–5 min of activity while adults can be active for 20–25 min. The increased endurance of adult snakes results from ontogenetic increases in both aerobic and anaerobic energy generation. At rest juvenile and adult snakes have the same whole-body lactic acid concentrations, but at exhaustion adult lactic acid concentrations are 1.5 times those of juveniles. This increase in anaerobic energy production accounts for part of the endurance of adult snakes, but increased aerobic metabolism appears to be more important. Among the mechanisms increasing aerobic metabolism are more effective pulmonary ventilation and a 3-fold ontogenetic increase in blood oxygen capacity.The rapid exhaustion of small garter snakes probably limits the microhabitats they can occupy and the sorts of hunting methods they can employ. Small garter snakes feed only on small prey that are easily subdued. There is an ontogenetic increase in the relative size of prey eaten by garter snakes that parallels the ontogenetic increase in endurance. Adult feeding habits are adopted at the same body size at which adult blood oxygen capacity and endurance are attained.  相似文献

Shifting Escherichia coli from aerobic to anaerobic growth caused changes in the ratio of [ATP]/[ADP] and in negative supercoiling of chromosomal and plasmid DNA. Shortly after lowering oxygen tension, both [ATP]/[ADP] and supercoiling transiently decreased. Under conditions of exponential anaerobic growth, both were higher than under aerobic conditions. These correlations may reflect an effect of [ATP]/[ADP] on DNA gyrase, since in vitro [ATP]/[ADP] influences the level of plasmid supercoiling attained when gyrase is either introducing or removing supercoils. When the supercoiling activity of gyrase was perturbed by a mutation in gyrB, a shift to anaerobic conditions resulted in plasmid supercoil relaxation similar to that seen with wild-type. However, the low level of supercoiling in the mutant persisted during a time when supercoiling in wild-type recovered and then exceeded aerobic levels. Thus, changes in oxygen tension can alter DNA supercoiling through an effect on gyrase, and correlations exist between changes in supercoiling and changes in the intracellular ratio of [ATP]/[ADP].  相似文献

The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that, in groups of highly trained endurance athletes (first and junior national teams), the final blood lactate concentration at maximum aerobic performance decreased as their training status increased. This study was performed with 20 physically active volunteers and 45 highly trained middle- and long-distance endurance athletes (speed skaters, triathletes, and cross-country skiers). Significant negative correlations (r = ?0.59 to ?0.87) between the final blood lactate concentration after incremental tests until exhaustion and aerobic performance (anaerobic threshold (AT)) were found only for the groups of highly trained endurance athletes, but not for the group of physically active subjects. It was shown for highly trained speed skaters that the final lactate concentration in their blood decreased and the oxygen consumption at AT increased with an increase in the volume of type I muscle fibers in the working muscle (r = ?0.84 and r = 0.7, respectively).  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare nutritionally enriched JavaFit coffee (JF) to commercially available decaffeinated coffee (P) with regard to impact on endurance and anaerobic power performance in a physically active, college-aged population. Ten subjects (8 men, 2 women) performed two 30-second Wingate anaerobic power tests and 2 cycle ergometer tests (75% VO2 max) to exhaustion. Mean VO2 was measured during each endurance exercise protocol. Excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) were recorded for 30 minutes following all exercise sessions. Area under the curve analysis was used to compare EPOC between JF and P for all exercise sessions. No differences were seen between JF and P in any of the power performance measures. However, time to exhaustion was significantly (p = 0.05) higher in JF (35.3 +/- 15.2 minutes) compared with P (27.3 +/- 10.7 minutes). No difference between JF and P were seen in EPOC in either the aerobic or anaerobic exercise sessions. A significant (p < 0.05) difference in average 30-minute postanaerobic power exercise RER was seen between JF (0.87 +/- 0.04) and P (0.83 +/- 0.03), but not following endurance exercise. A nutritionally-enriched coffee beverage appears to enhance time to exhaustion during aerobic exercise, but does not provide an ergogenic benefit during anaerobic exercise.  相似文献

The fate of indicator bacteria, a bacterial pathogen, and total aerobic bacteria during aerobic and anaerobic digestion of wastewater sludge under laboratory conditions was determined. Correlation coefficients were calculated between physical and chemical parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, total solids, and volatile solids) and either the daily change in bacterial numbers or the percentage of bacteria in the supernatant. The major factor influencing survival of Salmonella typhimurium and indicator bacteria during aerobic digestion was the temperature of sludge digestion. At 28 degrees C with greater than 4 mg of dissolved oxygen per liter, the daily change in numbers of these bacteria was approximately -1.0 log10/ml. At 6 degrees C, the daily change was less than -0.3 log10/ml. Most of the bacteria were associated with the sludge flocs during aerobic digestion of sludge at 28 degrees C with greater than 2.4 mg of dissolved oxygen per liter. Lowering the temperature or the amount of dissolved oxygen decreased the fraction of bacteria associated with the flocs and increased the fraction found in the supernatant.  相似文献

Aerobic endurance capacity is partly dependent on blood supply to and metabolic capacity of the active muscles. Recordings of lower limb skin postocclusive hyperaemia with laser Doppler flowmetry can differentiate between patients with lower limb atherosclerosis and healthy controls. In this study, we investigated the relationship between aerobic endurance, calf volume, common femoral artery diameter and time properties of the postocclusive laser Doppler curve. A group of 16 healthy male subjects with values for aerobic endurance which varied from those of untrained men to elite endurance trained athletes were examined. Duration of laser Doppler recorded skin postocclusive hyperaemia was significantly correlated to both aerobic power and anaerobic threshold (P less than 0.01). Hyperaemia in subjects with large common femoral artery diameter was of shorter duration (P less than 0.05). The peak and mean body mass related blood flow during hyperaemia was correlated to anaerobic threshold (P less than 0.05). These results were in agreement with previous studies indicating an effect of endurance training on the blood supply to the muscles concerned.  相似文献

Abstract Defined mixed cultures of an obligately aerobic Pseudomonas testosteroni and anaerobic Veillonella alcalescens strain were grown under oxygen and lactate limitation in chemostats with different oxygen supply rates. The aerobic and the anaerobic bacteria were shown to coexist and to complete for common substrates over a wide range of oxygen supply rates. Under similar conditions but with formate as the major substrate chemostat enrichments gave rise to undefined mixed cultures of aerobic, fermentative and methanogenic bacteria. The relevance of these observations to natural mineralization processes is discussed.  相似文献

饥饿对南方鲇幼鱼游泳能力个体变异和重复性的影响   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
为考察肉食性鱼类有氧和无氧运动能力的种内个体变异、重复性及其对饥饿的响应, 研究以南方鲇(Silurus meridionalis Chen)幼鱼为实验对象, 在(250.5)℃条件下测定对照组(n=28)和饥饿组(n=29)的临界游泳速度(Critical swimming speed, Ucrit)、暴发游泳速度(Constant acceleration speed, Ucat)和固定流速耐受时间(Endurance), 分析游泳能力的个体变异、稳定性及饥饿的影响。结果显示: (1)饥饿组的体重、体长和肥满度均分别显著下降了(15.100.86)%、(2.570.40)%和(7.941.59)%(P0.05), 而对照组无明显变化; (2)对照组的Ucat和耐受时间无明显变化(P0.05), 但Ucrit下降(6.632.25)%(P=0.031), 而除耐受时间外饥饿组其Ucrit和Ucat分别显著下降了(26.002.76)%和(13.681.86)%(P0.001), 并饥饿组Ucrit的下降比例显著大于其Ucat(P0.001); (3)并且对照组三个指标的变异系数(Coefficient of variation, CV)变化方向和程度不尽相同, 饥饿组的Ucrit、Ucat和耐受时间的CV全部增加; (4)南方鲇幼鱼Ucrit和Ucat呈正相关且2周的饥饿并未改变此正相关。饥饿明显降低南方鲇幼鱼两种游泳能力并导致游泳能力的个体变异变大, 但没有改变该种鱼的有氧运动能力和无氧运动能力之间的内在正相关关系。研究表明无氧运动能力在环境改变后显得更为保守, 种内个体变异的变动可能有利于在相同自然选择压力下种内个体采取不同的捕食和避敌对策。    相似文献

Thiosphaera pantotropha is capable of aerobic heterotrophic nitrification and both aerobic and anaerobic denitrification. These phenomena have been studied in acetate-limited aerobic and anaerobic continuous cultures supplied with ammonia and nitrate. The internal reaction rates were defined, based on biochemical knowledge. The observable external conversion rates are related through a linear equation on the basis of the specified internal reaction rates. The linear equation is a Pirt relation extended for microbial systems with multiple electron donors (acetate and ammonia) and electron acceptors (oxygen and nitrate). The coefficients in this equation were estimated from the continuous culture measurements, and are composed of parameters involved in ATP production and consumption by the microorganism. It is shown that with realistic values for these parameters, the metabolically structured model describes the aerobic as well as the anaerobic experiments.  相似文献

Honest-signalling theory asserts that threat displays reliably advertise attributes that influence fighting success. Endurance, as measured by treadmill performance, predicts the outcome of agonistic interactions among lizards. If threat displays in lizards function to advertise endurance capacity then variation in threat displays should correlate with endurance. I tested this prediction for the duration of threat posturing in male side-blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana) and examined whether threat displays act as quality handicaps, reliable signals that expend the attribute that is advertised. Individual variation in the duration of threat posturing correlated with endurance, while an experimental reduction of endurance diminished the duration of threat posturing. As expected of a quality handicap, endurance fell below baseline after display production. A restriction of aerobic metabolism can account for this effect. In threat posturing, lateral compression of the thorax may interfere with respiration or with circulation, limiting aerobic metabolism and causing a compensatory increase in anaerobic metabolism, thereby generating lactate and diminishing locomotor capacity. Concentrations of lactate measured after display production were higher than baseline, consistent with the proposed mechanism. By restricting aerobic metabolism, the threat posture can act as a quality handicap, simultaneously advertising and expending the endurance capacity of displaying lizards.  相似文献

These physiological properties may be estimated by three main parameters: power, capacity, and energy efficiency. The specific expression of endurance in athletes is determined by the ratio between these bioenergetic parameters. A mathematical model based on the simulation software AQUASIM was developed to validate an anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) process that enables simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a single reactor by adding external organic carbon to preclude excess aerobic phosphate uptake by polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and provide phosphate for denitrifying PAOs (DNPAOs). Aerobic batch tests after anaerobic phosphate release with different chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations indicated that the effect of COD concentration on the phosphate uptake preclusion could be expressed by a simple formula. The reduction factor reflecting the formula, which retards the aerobic phosphate uptake in the presence of COD, was added to the process rates of aerobic polyphosphate storage and PAOs growth in the model. The improved model, which included the reduction factor, reasonably matched the experimental result regarding aerobic phosphate uptake behavior whereas the model without it did not; thus, the former precisely predicts the AOA process behavior.  相似文献

We hypothesized that the anaerobic power and aerobic power outputs during all-out runs of any common duration between 10 and 150 s would be proportional to the maximum anaerobic (E(an-max)) and aerobic powers (E(aer-max)) available to the individual runner. Seventeen runners who differed in E(an-max) and E(aer-max) (5 sprinters, 5 middle-distance runners, and 7 long distance runners) were tested during treadmill running on a 4.6 degrees incline. E(an-max) was estimated from the fastest treadmill speed subjects could attain for eight steps. E(aer-max) was determined from a progressive, discontinuous, treadmill test to failure. Oxygen deficits and rates of uptake were measured to assess the respective anaerobic and aerobic power outputs during 11-16 all-out treadmill runs that elicited failure between 10 and 220 s. We found that, during all-out runs of any common duration, the relative anaerobic and aerobic powers utilized were largely the same for sprint, middle-distance, and long-distance subjects. The similar fractional utilization of the E(an-max) and E(aer-max) available during high-speed running 1) provides empirical values that modify and advance classic theory, 2) allows rates of anaerobic and aerobic energy release to be quantified from individual maxima and run durations, and 3) explains why the high-speed running performances of different event specialists can be accurately predicted (R(2) = 0.97; n = 254) from two direct measurements and the same exponential time constant.  相似文献

Genome-based Flux Balance Analysis (FBA) and steady-state isotopic-labeling-based Metabolic Flux Analysis (MFA) are complimentary approaches to predicting and measuring the operation and regulation of metabolic networks. Here, genome-derived models of Escherichia coli (E. coli) metabolism were used for FBA and 13C-MFA analyses of aerobic and anaerobic growths of wild-type E. coli (K-12 MG1655) cells. Validated MFA flux maps reveal that the fraction of maintenance ATP consumption in total ATP production is about 14% higher under anaerobic (51.1%) than aerobic conditions (37.2%). FBA revealed that an increased ATP utilization is consumed by ATP synthase to secrete protons from fermentation. The TCA cycle is shown to be incomplete in aerobically growing cells and submaximal growth is due to limited oxidative phosphorylation. An FBA was successful in predicting product secretion rates in aerobic culture if both glucose and oxygen uptake measurement were constrained, but the most-frequently predicted values of internal fluxes yielded from sampling the feasible space differ substantially from MFA-derived fluxes.  相似文献

A soil bacterium, Pseudomonas sp. strain P136, was isolated by selective enrichment for anaerobic utilization of o-phthalate through nitrate respiration. o-Phthalate, m-phthalate, p-phthalate, benzoate, cyclohex-1-ene-carboxylate, and cyclohex-3-ene-carboxylate were utilized by this strain under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. m-Hydroxybenzoate and p-hydroxybenzoate were utilized only under anaerobic conditions. Protocatechuate and catechol were neither utilized nor detected as metabolic intermediates during the metabolism of these aromatic compounds under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Cells grown anaerobically on one of these aromatic compounds also utilized all other aromatic compounds as substrates for denitrification without a lag period. On the other hand, cells grown on succinate utilized aromatic compounds after a lag period. Anaerobic growth on these substrates was dependent on the presence of nitrate and accompanied by the production of molecular nitrogen. The reduction of nitrite to nitrous oxide and the reduction of nitrous oxide to molecular nitrogen were also supported by anaerobic utilization of these aromatic compounds in this strain. Aerobically grown cells showed a lag period in denitrification with all substrates tested. Cells grown anaerobically on aromatic compounds also consumed oxygen. No lag period was observed for oxygen consumption during the transition period from anaerobic to aerobic conditions. Cells grown aerobically on one of these aromatic compounds were also adapted to utilize other aromatic compounds as substrates for respiration. However, cells grown on succinate showed a lag period during respiration with aromatic compounds. Some other characteristic properties on metabolism and regulation of this strain are also discussed for their physiological aspects.  相似文献

Innovative fermentation processes are necessary for the cost-effective production of bulk chemicals from renewable resources. Current microbial processes are either anaerobic processes, with high yield and productivity, or less-efficient aerobic processes. Oxygen utilization plays an important role in energy generation and redox metabolism that is necessary for product formation. The aerobic productivity, however, is relatively low because of rate-limiting volumetric oxygen transfer; whereas the product yield in the presence of oxygen is generally low because part of the substrate is completely oxidized to CO?. Hence, new microbial conversion processes for the production of bulk chemicals should be anaerobic. In this opinion article, we describe different scenarios for the development of highly efficient microbial conversion processes for the anaerobic production of bulk chemicals.  相似文献
