1. 1.|Pineal gland removal (PX) performed on Wyoming ground squirrels (Spermophilus elegans) during the summer significantly lowered their non-shivering thermogenic (NST) response and impaired their ability to hibernate the subsequent winter.

2. 2.|This impairment was not observed in previous studies on squirrels PX'd later in the season. A period of responsiveness for involvement of the pineal gland in NST and hibernation is, therefore, presented.

3. 3.|Environmental signals translated by the pineal gland which influence the NST response do not appear to be thermal cues but are more than likely photic information.

4. 4.|Reduced impairment of the NST response was observed in squirrels PX'd for 3 yr compared to the 1st PX'd group. However, this may simply be a result of the 3-yr PX'd group being tested later in the hibernation cycle.

1. 1.|Oil caused a substantial decrease in the insulative value of polar bear (Ursus maritimus) pelts measured in vitro.

2. 2.|Following oil contamination the calm air heat transfer coefficient increased by a factor of 2 to 5: the wind coefficient averaged 290% greater and the solar utilization increased by 55%.

3. 3.|Conductance through oil-covered furs remained high at winter temperatures (Ta = 0.6°C) but decreased with time at summer temperatures (Ta = 24.7°C).

4. 4.|The most viscous of the three oils tested had a more consistently negative effect on insulation.

1. 1.|Progresterone concentrations in peripheral plasma, corpus luteum, uterus and placenta were determined by radioimmunoassay, in pregnant heat-acclimated (HA) and control (C) rats.

2. 2.|Concentration of progesterone in plasma and uterus of HA rats were lower than C from day 5 to 18 and day 5 to mid-gestation respectively.

3. 3.|Number and weight of pups born to HA rats were lower than C by 11.1% and 12.3% respectively.

4. 4.|It is concluded that aberration in pregnancy development observed in HA rats is associated with lower progesterone concentration in plasma and uterus from day of implantation to mid-pregnancy.

1. 1.|The thermal resistance of the activity of frontal cilia in the median gills of the fresh water mussel Anodonta anatina was studied.

2. 2.|The resistance acclimation appeared in 2 days in the gills of intact animals, but not in the isolated gills kept at 4, 14 and 24°C, for between 1 to 3 days.

3. 3.|Warm-acclimation increased the ACh sensitivity of the gills of intact mussels.

4. 4.|Isolation of the gills enhanced the thermal resistance.

5. 5.|ACh, choline and tetramethylammonium enhanced the thermal resistance in the isolated gills. whereas atropine and physostigmine diminished it.

6. 6.|It is concluded that in A. anatina the control if the thermal resistance is probably neural.

1. 1.|Cold acclimation apparently favours an increase of water content in fat body, but not in coxal muscle, of cockroaches.

2. 2.|A remarkable enhancement in the accumulation of total protein in fat body characterizes the cold acclimation of cockroaches, particularly adult males (175% increase in protein/DNA ratio). The increase in protein content of coxal muscle during acclimination to 15°C, observed in nymphs (16%) and males (16%) but not in females, is less pronounced than that of fat body.

3. 3.|A diminution (28–32%) in the free amino acid/DNA ratio due to cold acclimation has been recorded in both coxal muscle and fat body of nymphs and females, but not in males.

4. 4.|No qualitative change occurs in the free amino acid spectrum of haemolymph and tissues of this insect during acclimation to 15 and 35°C.

5. 5.|An augmentation (15–30%) of the RNA/DNA ratio occurs in fat body and coxal muscle of nymphs and males but in fat body alone of females following cold acclimation.

6. 6.|The glycogen reserve has been shown to increase by up to 30% in fat body and coxal muscle of cold acclimated cockroaches compared to warm acclimated ones.

1. 1.|Heat hardening in a transitory increase in heat tolerance following a sublethal exposure to lethal high temperatures.

2. 2.|Within 1–2 h of an initial exposure to the critical thermal maximum (CTM), the CTM of two species of amphibians and two species of fish had increased significantly above the initial level and then decreased to the initial level within 24 h.

3. 3.|Experiments with exposure to sub-CTM temperatures and multiple exposures to the CTM indicated that hardening requires exposure to the CTM and may be the maximum CTM attainable by the animal.

4. 4.|Diel and seasonal variation had significant effects on hardening ability.

5. 5.|Field evidence suggests that heat hardening is adaptive in that it provides an acute means of adjustment to extreme fluctuations in diurnal temperatures.

1. 1.|The influence of temperature changes on Ca2+-binding to brain ganglioside mixtures of different polarity, to single gangliosides (GM1, GD1a, GT1b) and to their deceramide was investigated potentiometrically by means of ion-selective electrodes.

2. 2.|Following cooling (3.5°C/min.) from 37 to 13°C the Ca2+-binding to gangliosides, except GM1, was increased (7–30%).

3. 3.|Subsequent rewarming from 13 to 37°C resulted in up to 100% release of previously-bound Ca2+.

4. 4.|When comparing the maximal absolute binding difference of Ca2+ to gangliosides during temperature changes a decrease of these differences could be stated which corresponds to an increase in the polarity of the gangliosides.

5. 5.|From these experiments it is concluded that a higher polarity of neuronal gangliosides is responsible for a lower thermal sensitivity of Ca2+-binding to these compounds. This may be involved in the process of thermal adaptation of ectothermic vertebrates.

1. 1.|Oesophageal temperature (Tes) has been recorded at four vertical levels in the oesophagus of human subjects during exercise and during passive body heating.

2. 2.|The temperature increased with depth.

3. 3.|The rate of increase in Tes during exercise was greatest at the level of the diaphragm.

4. 4.|During passive heating of the body Tes increased most rapidly, and with shortest latency time, at the level adjacent to the left atrium of the heart.

5. 5.|During exercise, when breathing is deeper than at rest, Tes should be measured at a deeper level than that which is used during passive heating.

1. 1.|To determine the thermoregulatory prowess of altricial nestlings, we conducted both equilibrium and transient analyses of white-crowned sparrow nestings, a representative fringillid.

2. 2.|For an individual nestling at thermal equilibrium, feather development is the major factor reducing heat loss after 2 days of age; tissue- and boundary-layer resistances are of minor importance.

3. 3.|The nest substantially reduces wind speeds near the nestlings. Heat transfer through the nest material is of only moderate importance. Evaporation also appears to be a small proportion of total heat loss during hypothermia in natural environments.

4. 4.|Net long-wave radiant exchange is also minor, but short-wave radiation is potentially a major component of the nestling's energy budget, approaching the magnitude of maximal metabolic heat production.

5. 5.|When nestlings cool, their body mass and metabolic rate are also major importance in determining the rate of cooling, and (for metabolism) the equilibrium temperature as well.

6. 6.|The huddling together of nestlings is perhaps the single most important factor affecting heat transfer.

2. 2.|Supercooling ability varied among the species, being the greatest in G. armifera.

3. 3.|Prolonged exposure of winter animals to high temperatures resulted in only a modest increase in SCP.

4. 4.|Low temperature survival of D. cronkhitei and G. armifera was slightly poorer than predicted by the mean SCP.

1. 1.|The purpose of this study was to determine the threshold specific absorption rate (SAR) during exposure to 2450 MHz continuous wave (CW) microwaves that affected thermoregulatory behaviour in mice.

2. 2.|A Plexiglas shuttle box was placed inside a waveguide imposed with a temperature gradient. The temperature gradient allowed the mice to select a particular section of the shuttle box which was, presumably, related to their state of thermal comfort. Exposing the mice to 2450 MHz inside the waveguide at SARs of 0–5.3 W kg−1 for 1 h caused no significant change in their preferred ambient temperature.

3. 3.|Increasing SAR from 5.3 to 18.1 W kg−1 caused the animals to shift their position to the cooler end of the shuttle box.

4. 4.|Following termination of microwave exposure animals that had selected a cool ambient temperature returned to the warm side of the shuttle box.

5. 5.|It is concluded that for mice exposed to radiation at 2450 MHz the thermoregulatory behaviour is significantly affected at SARs of 5.3 to 9.9 W kg−1.

1. 1.|Regional differences in the frequency of electrical activity in rat epididymis were maintained at all temperatures below 39°C.

2. 2.|The change in frequency per deg C increased with temperature and was highest in the temperature region of 34–39°C and the Arrhenius plots of the frequency were linear and parallel in all parts of the epididymis.

3. 3.|The Q10 of the frequency varied between 2.2.–4.3.

4. 4.|The conduction velocity at the cauda epididymis was highest (2.8 mm/s) at 37°C. The Q10 of the conduction velocity was 2.3 in the temperature region of 24–37°C.

1. 1.|Cultured Chinese hamster V79 cells were trypsinized plated and grown attached or inoculated into spinner flasks and grown in suspension from exponnential growth to plateau-phase growth and their thermal sensitivity was measured after various growth times.

2. 2.|For attached cells, cultures were trypsinized and replated either 2 h before or after heating and the results were qualitatively the same: the thermal sensitivity remained approximately the same for the first 20 h and then increased and reached a maximum at 40–70 h. During this time, cells were in an exponential growth phase, and little or no change was observed in the cell-cycle age distribution as measured by flow cytometry (FMF) or [3H]thymidine pulse ([3H]Tdr) labelling.

3. 3.|At longer times after plating, cells grew into plateau phase, and thermal sensitivity decreased and became less than for the cells in exponential growth phase at the beginning of the experiment.

4. 4.|FMF and [3H]Tdr labelling showed that cells were accumulating in G1 phase as the population density increased and that this accumulation was maximum at about 120–140 h as cells grew into plateau phase. This would account for the decrease in heat sensitivity and the increase in radiosensivity observed in plateau-phase cells.

5. 5.|For cells cultured in suspension there was no change in thermal sensitivity while cells were in exponential growth phase, As cell entered plateau phase, thermal resistance increased and most of the cell population had accumulated in G1 as measured by FMF.

1. 1.|Fourteen male volunteers were examined under passive heating.

2. 2.|Electrical skin resistance (ESR) and rectal temperature (Tre) were measured during the whole period of exposure.

3. 3.|It was found that:

• —|ESR decreases rapidly with increasing air temperature. Assuming an exponential curve yields a mean time constant of 14 min.

• —|There is a correlation between the individual ESR time constants and Tre increases (r = 0.695, P < 0.005).

• —|Additional changes of ESR were noted in 8 subjects at a constant air temperature of 42°C.

4. 4.|It is concluded that ESR may be a useful indicator of the sweating response of the human thermoregulatory system during exogenous heat load.

1. 1.|Hypothalamic and rectal temperatures were recorded in 8 warm-reared (wr) and in 12 warm-acclimated control rats during resting in the heat and during 30 min running under thermoneutral conditions.

2. 2.|Brain and body temperatures of wr rats were significantly higher (P < 0.001) than control rats, both in normothermia as well as in hyperthermia; at rest, and also during exercise.

3. 3.|Warm-reared rats were more tolerant to heat.

4. 4.|During normothermia a weak selective brain cooling was present in control but absent in wr rats. During hyperthermia, however, the cooling intensified in control and occurred in wr rats.

5. 5.|The main strategy of adaptation to heat in wr rats is an upward resetting of the temperature set-point and increased passivity.

1. 1.|Temperatures at four sites along the ventral nasal concha were recorded in four unrestrained rabbits exposed to ambient temperatures from 0 to 35°C.

2. 2.|The nasal temperatures decreased and temperature gradients from proximal to distal parts of the concha increased in cold-exposed rabbits.

3. 3.|The temperature gradients increased also during panting in heat-stressed rabbits.

4. 4.|The ventral nasal concha is suggested to be an efficacious heat exchanger both in cold and hot ambient, due to its geometry and vascularization.
