The invasion of Llyn Coron in North Wales by the American immigrant Dugesia tigrina resulted in the almost entire displacement of the native Polycelis tenuis and P. nigra populations. Because competition for food is the most important factor controlling and regulating populations of British lake-dwelling triclads, the diets of the invasive and native triclads in the lake were examined in an attempt to explain the successful invasion.A serological technique, the precipitin test, identified the gut contents of field-collected triclads. Niche breadth, electivity and niche overlap indices were used in analysis of the data. A broad food niche was recorded for all the triclad species. Oligochaetes predominated in the diet of D. tigrina followed by Asellus and chironomids, in almost equal proportions, snails and caddisflies, with mayflies scarcely eaten. Both Polycelis species fed heavily on oligochaetes followed by Asellus. P. tenuis ate slightly higher proportions of chironomids and caddisflies than snails and mayflies, whilst P. nigra consumed similar proportions of these four prey taxa. Gammarus, scarce in Llyn Coron, and cladocerans were not eaten by the Polycelis species and by only a few D. tigrina.To-date there has been no apparent shift in the diet of the Polycelis species as a consequence of the invasion by D. tigrina. In the absence of any evidence for the partitioning of food on the basis of prey size or condition, the considerable overlap in the diets of D. tigrina and the Polycelis species suggests the potential for severe inter-specific competition for food. The superior exploitation by D. tigrina of the available food resource requires explanation.  相似文献

A new species of cycad allied to theC. circinalis group,Cycas pranburiensis, is described from the southeast karst area of Thailand near Pranburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan province. It is distinguished by its short leaves with broad, coriaceous leaflets and mostly unarmed petioles, and the extended, gently curved sterile apices of the microsporophylls. The cone beetle fauna of the new species, believed to be involved in pollination, is distinct from that of other southeast Asian species ofCycas.  相似文献

1. A survey of lakes in Anglesey and Snowdonia, Wales, in the summer of 1997 recorded changes in the triclad fauna which had occurred since earlier studies in the 1950s and in 1973. Two native species, Polycelis tenuis and Dugesia polychroa, and two immigrants, Planaria torva and especially Dugesia tigrina, have increased their range. The triclad fauna has remained unchanged with time in eleven out of sixteen lakes in Snowdonia, in contrast to only one out of fourteen lakes on Anglesey. This supports the hypothesis produced in the 1950s, that the triclad fauna of the ion-poor, unproductive lakes in Snowdonia would change little with time, being maintained by ecological interactions, whereas the ion-rich, productive lakes on Anglesey, from which native Dugesia spp. and Dendrocoelum lacteum are historically absent, would increase in triclad diversity. 2. An examination of national records for the distribution of D. tigrina and Pl. torva indicated their continuing dispersal in both still and running waters in mainland Britain, with the former species having the greater frequency of occurrence. 3. The reasons for this may be that D. tigrina is (a) more easily dispersed, (b) a more opportunistic, catholic feeder, (c) a more vigorous competitor, (d) able to reproduce asexually and (e) able to prey to some extent on other triclad species, as shown in the laboratory but not yet confirmed in the field. The absence of D. tigrina and Pl. torva from unproductive lakes may be explained in terms of low temperature and feeding mode, and a low standing crop of gastropods, respectively. 4. Seven surveys (1961–1997) of the triclad fauna (six species) of Colemere, England, revealed that D. tigrina was confined to one small area of the littoral zone until the mid-1980s, after which it spread fairly rapidly to occupy the entire shore by 1997. Its expansion has been to the detriment of all the native species, particularly P. tenuis, except Dd. lacteum. The possible extinction of Pl. torva may be linked to a numerical reduction in snails, particularly Potamopyrgus jenkinsi. 5. Dugesia tigrina has an adverse effect on the native triclad fauna in lakes, particularly when only a few species are present. This has been explained in terms of the availability of a wider variety of food. The presence of a larger number of triclad species denies the immigrant food items, particularly crustaceans and snails, the food refuges of Dd. lacteum and Dugesia spp., respectively. However, the long-term study of Colemere has shown that more diverse triclad faunas may also be vulnerable to this immigrant. The effect of Pl. torva on native triclads remains uncertain.  相似文献

Summary

Ten species of Rhopalostroma are currently known and all are from either Africa or Asia. Rhopalostroma gracile D. Hawksw. and R. kanyae Whalley &; Thienhirun have previously been reported from Thailand. A further species, R. lekae sp. no v., is now described from Thailand. Thus three out of the eleven known species of Rhopalostroma are from Thailand.  相似文献

Our aim has been to determine whether carbohydrate distribution in the oviducts of progesterone-treated animals is comparable with that of seasonal breeders in Rana tigrina. Like many other anurans, R. tigrina oviduct exhibits a short straight portion (pars recta, pr) at the beginning followed by a long, highly coiled portion (pars convoluta, pc). Histologically, the oviduct of this species revealed some unique features, one of which was intense toluidine blue staining, specifically in the upper mucosal glands of pc4. Based on lectin reactivities in the epithelial cells and mucosal glands, patterns of lectin staining in the seasonal breeders were classified into seven types: R1-R3 (for pr) and C1-C4 (for pc). Typically, some lectins reacted selectively either with ciliated cells (concanavalin A) or non-cialiated cells (Ricinus communis agglutinin I and wheatgerm agglutinin); however, Bandeiraea simplicifolia agglutinin I reacted with both cell types. These staining patterns were different in the progesterone-treated animals. Differences in glycan distribution in the oviductal secretions were revealed by lectin blotting. Compared with the seasonal breeders, an enhanced staining of some lectins was noted in the hormone-treated animals: either an increased staining intensity of existing protein bands or additional staining of new protein bands. Inversely, the staining of wheatgerm agglutinin was markedly diminished in the hormone-treated animals, suggesting the inhibitory effect of progesterone on oviductal glycan distribution. Whether alteration in glycan distribution upon progesterone treatment affects the physiological properties of the released jelly substances remains to be addressed. Abstract

Comparative studies of sound production and sound emission in seven species of European tettigoniids have been carried out. The species chosen were two Tettigoniines (Tettigonia cantans, Tettigonia viridissima), two Ephippigerines (Ephippiger discoidalis, Ephippiger ephippiger), and three Decticines (Decticus albifrons, Decticus verrucivorus, Psorodonotus illyricus). The factors which determined the choice of species were the different morphology (for example body shape and weight, and wing size) of the three subfamilies. The parameters of the different songs (e.g. dominant frequency, intensity) are normally not correlated to any of the investigated morphological characteristics of the animals. In the brachypterous species intraspecific correlations exist between wing size and the dominant low frequency band of the call. This frequency band is also observable at related higher frequencies in the ultrasonic range (20–60 kHz), the observed band width increasing with frequency. Sound emission in all species is to some extent directional. This directionality is related to body size and wing structure. The song structure of the different species does not appear to be related to any observable characteristic of the habitat of die animals. A possible exception may be the song of Psorodonotus illyricus with a particularly low dominant frequency band. The phylogenetic development of the songs seems to be determined by relationships between the different species rather than to any factors contributed by the habitat.  相似文献

Rana tigrina andTomopterna breviceps occur as sympatric species at Dharwad, India. Sexually mature males produce advertisement calls. The advertisement call of both the species consist of a number of calls produced in series forming a call group. Each call group ofRana tigrina comprises 10–40 calls, whereas that ofTomopterna breviceps consists 13–141 calls. Each call consists of a pulse group with variable number of pulses which lack pulse interval. Calls of both the species exhibit similarities in (i) call consisting of series of calls with a pulse group in each call, (ii) absence of pulse interval within the pulse group, (iii) the amplitude of the first pulse being always small, and (iv) the frequency spectrum beginning from 200 Hz. Based on the similarities in the spectral features of the calls, it is suggested that the two species may be closely related to each other.  相似文献

Blastema growth and functional maturation of the pharynx during regeneration in various planarian species were compared. The intensity of blastema growth was highest in Polycelis tenuis; the lowest, in Schmidtea mediterranea. In the sexual and asexual races of Girardia tigrina blastema growth differed inconsiderably. The function of the pharynx during the regeneration of caudal fragments lacking pharynx was manifested in G. tigrina in the usual amount of time, while in the regeneration of head fragments lacking pharynx, this function occured earlier. In other planarian species of the other two typed, the times of pharynx regeneration had no regular character and took longer compared to the same process in G. tigrina.  相似文献

1. We evaluated the effect of group size on the per capita ingestion rates of three species of flatworm, two of which actively group with conspecifics (Dugesia tigrina, D, dorotocephala) and employ mucus to capture prey, and a third species (Mesostoma ehrenbergii) that does not actively group but does use mucus to capture prey. 2. As flatworm group size increased, daily per capita ingestion first increased and then decreased for D. tigrina and D. dorotocephala. In the case of D. tigrina this pattern was observed even at low predator densities. Ingestion rates of M. ehrenbergii were largely unaffected by group size. 3. Results suggest that the observed changes in per capita ingestion rates with changes in group size previously reported for D. tigrina are related to their tendency for active grouping and are not directly a consequence of prey capture technique or experimental design. 4. We argue that freshwater triclads in general, and D. tigrina in particular, represent an ideal model system for the development and testing of group foraging theory.  相似文献

Information on fungi associated with necrotic leaflets of exotic palms in Thailand is scanty, as previous studies were mainly focused on decaying fronds. This study provides some information regarding fungi associated with necrotic leaflets of exotic palms in Thailand. Specimens in this work were collected from several locations in Chiang Mai province, including natural and planted areas. One new species, Cercospora arecacearum on areca palm (Areca catechu), is described and illustrated. An ITS sequence data analysis confirms the separation of the new Cercospora species from related taxa. Another species, Neorehmia arecae, hitherto only known from areca palm, is newly recorded for Thailand. Furthermore, Wallichia siamensis is a new host for this species.  相似文献

Anuran metamorphosis, the transition from aquatic larvae to terrestrial juveniles, is accompanied by significant morphological, physiological, and behavioral changes. Timing of metamorphosis and final size, which can influence adult fitness, may depend on sufficient energy accumulated during the larval period to support metamorphosis. However, only two species of anurans have been examined for energetic costs of metamorphosis, Rana tigrina and Anaxyrus terrestris. Based on these species, it has been hypothesized that differences in energy expenditure are related to duration of metamorphosis. To compare energetic costs of metamorphosis among species and examine this hypothesis, we quantified the total energy required for metamorphosis of Lithobates palustris tadpoles by measuring oxygen consumption rates over the duration of metamorphic climax using closed-circuit respirometry. Total energy costs for L. palustris were positively related to tadpole mass and duration of metamorphic climax. However, larger tadpoles completed metamorphosis more efficiently because they used proportionally less total energy for metamorphic climax than smaller counterparts. Costs were intermediate to R. tigrina, a larger species with similar metamorphic duration, and A. terrestris, a smaller species with shorter metamorphic climax. The results supported the hypothesis that amphibian species with more slowly developing tadpoles, such as ranids, require more absolute energy for metamorphosis in comparison to more rapidly developing species like bufonids.  相似文献

Abstract

Two species of Protura, Berberentulus sp. (aff. nelsoni Tuxen) and Acerentulus kermadecensis n.sp., are described from the Kermadec Islands. They are very similar to South American species, of which Acerentulus nemoralis Najt & Vidal is redescribed. Two additional species-groups are recognised in genus Acerentulus, one for the Australian A. sexspinatus Womersley and the other for A. kermadecensis, A. kisonis Imadaté from Japan, and A. nemoralis from Argentina. A key to distinguish the species of this latter group is given.  相似文献

Abstract

The genus Crassocephalum in Asia, introduced there from Africa, was examined by extensive field work, herbarium studies, analyses of pollen and seed fertility, chromosome counts and ITS and trnL‐F sequencing. We found that Crassocephalum in Asia comprises two species and their interspecific hybrid. The two species are C. crepidioides (Benth.) S. Moore and C. rubens (Juss. ex Jacq.) S. Moore, of which the latter is a new record for Asia (north Thailand). The hybrid between these two species in north Thailand originated from a cross between C. crepidioides (2n = 40) as female and C. rubens (2n = 40) as male parent.  相似文献

Recent years have seen the development of molecular‐based methodologies to investigate hybridization and its impact on the evolutionary process. However, morphological characterization of hybrid zones has only scantily been considered, especially in zootaxa. Thus, the level of congruence between molecular and morphological characters when attempting to detect hybrids remains a poorly tackled area. The genets (genus Genetta) provide an ideal case study for further investigation of the respective contribution of morphology and DNA in hybrid zone characterization because (1) their morphology has recently been exhaustively explored and (2) the existence of hybrid zones in southern Africa was proposed in the literature. We assessed levels of hybridization among the southern African genets, and questioned the role of ecological factors on the hybridization patterns detected. We used an integrative approach involving nine discrete morphological characters and a diagnostic discriminant function, geometric morphometrics and sequences of cytochrome b including collection specimens. The combination of independent materials allowed us to accurately reassess the level of hybridization in southern African genets, and revealed cryptic, interspecific gene flows. Morphology unambiguously detected a low number of G. maculata × G. tigrina hybrids and rejected the hypothesis of a large intergradation zone in KwaZulu‐Natal, thus supporting the species status of the two genets. Cytochrome b analyses revealed: (1) cryptic, massive hybridization between G. tigrina and the sympatric G. felina, and (2) a trace of reticulation (one sequence) between G. tigrina and the allopatric G. genetta. The type specimen of G. mossambica Matschie, 1902 is considered to be a morphological hybrid between G. maculata and G. angolensis. Remarkably, the morphological approaches (discrete characters and morphometrics) proved complementary to conclusions derived from cytochrome b sequences. Whilst morphometrics was generally unable to accurately identify all putative hybrids, this approach revealed diagnostic cranial shape differences between recognized species as well as the cryptic G. ‘letabae’ (included in the super‐species G. maculata). Morphometrics also confirmed the diagnostic value and age dependency of discrete characters. Our integrative approach appeared necessary to the detection of cryptic hybridizations and to the comprehensive characterization of hybrid zones. The recurrent detection of hybrids exhibiting tigrina‐like coat patterns may suggest (1) asymmetric hybridization of G. tigrina males to females of other species and (2) positive selection for tigrina‐like phenotype in South African habitats, but these hypotheses will have to be further tested using other sources of evidence. Despite the precise mosaic of hybrid zones identified in southern African genets, the environmental factors that shape patterns of distribution of hybrids remain unclear. Nevertheless, in the light of our range reassessment, it appears that seasonality of precipitation and periods of annual frost may play stringent roles in the distribution of genets. The complementarity of our results based on morphology and molecules is regarded as encouraging for the further development of integrative approaches in order to better understand the complex phenomena that underlie hybridization processes. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005, 86 , 11–33.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of complex acoustic structures in mammalian vocalisations can make it difficult to quantify frequency characteristics. We describe two methods developed for the frequency analysis of a complex swift fox Vulpes velox vocalisation, the barking sequence: (1) autocorrelation function analysis and (2) instantaneous frequency analysis. The autocorrelation function analysis results in an energy density spectrum of the signal's averaged amplitude and frequency information. This analysis was used for locating possible formant structures and quantifying the energy distribution of single barks in the barking sequence. The instantaneous frequency analysis is applied to individual continuous frequency bands and generates frequency contours with a resolution of a couple of Hertz. It was used to quantify frequency modulation and calculate average frequencies of harmonic bands in individual barks and to estimate fundamental frequencies. This second method of analysis had to be evaluated with spectrographic analysis to gauge its reliability for each band analysed. The algorithms used should make both of these methods applicable to other complex vocalisations.  相似文献

Histamine-immunoreactivity was investigated in the planarians Dugesia tigrina and Polycelis nigra. Specific antisera against a histamine-protein conjugate were used, and 1-ethyl—3 (3-dimethyl-aminopropyl) carbodiimide was used both as coupling agent to prepare the antigen and as a tissue fixative. In D. tigrina, histamine-immunoreactivity was restricted to photoreceptor cells in the cerebral eye. In P. nigra, nerve fibers were found in the ventral nerve cord and nerves running laterally from these. The epidermal eyes did not display histamine-immunoreactivity. The results suggest that histamine may be a transmitter in some of the most primitive animals. They also suggest that the distribution of histamine may differ in planarians.  相似文献
