ABSTRACT

The “zeep” complex consists of nine birds that produce nocturnal flight calls with similar acoustic features. Our inability to distinguish these calls inhibits the acoustic monitoring of these species. We test the hypothesis that flight calls of nine warblers in the “zeep” complex show sufficient acoustic differences to allow differentiation. We investigate divergence in these vocalizations by recording birds held for banding and collecting additional recordings from sound libraries. We used three approaches to compare calls between species: analysis of variance in acoustic properties, discriminant analysis of acoustic properties, and spectrographic cross-correlation. The first approach revealed five species that were different in one or more acoustic properties. The second approach revealed a level of assignment to the correct species (73%) that exceeded levels expected by chance (36%). The third approach revealed calls of seven species to be significantly more similar to conspecific calls than heterospecific calls. Our results suggest the calls of many members of the “zeep” complex exhibit species-specific differences in structure, which may allow differentiation of at least five “zeep” species based on call alone. We advocate for the combined use of these three approaches for the comparison of “zeep” calls in future flight call studies.  相似文献

The present 7-year study was conducted on a capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) lek. The study included four years of continuous monitoring of reproductive behaviour of capercaillie in spring and a 3-year study of hen-cock relationships. We used a factorial Correspondence Analysis (CA) to assess the relationship between variables such as weather, release activity and cock display behaviour, as well as the presence and activity of hens. The statistical correlations between these factors were also summarized, showing that: there is no direct relationship between daily activity of hens on the lek and photoperiod; the behavioural interactions between cocks, their spatial and territorial organization, on the one hand, and hen activity and receptivity on the other, are reinforced by reciprocal interactions between the sexes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Two zebra finches and two budgerigars were trained, by operant conditioning, to detect autogenous (self-generated) distance calls in the presence of masking noise. For both species, there were no differences in detection thresholds for normal calls compared to time- reversed calls. Thresholds for autogenous calls were also compared with thresholds of the other species of birds listening to the same call. When detecting a zebra finch call, budgerigars had slightly lower thresholds than that of the zebra finch. On the other hand, when detecting a budgerigar call, zebra finches showed significantly higher thresholds than the budgerigar. From these results, and from what is known about basic hearing capabilities in these species, we conclude that these birds are not using a mechanism which utilizes “matched” or cross-correlational filtering. It is more likely that they are using “frequency-based” filtering in detecting calls in noise.  相似文献

Acoustic signals play a key role in shaping the relationships in birds. Common cuckoos Cuculus canorus are known to produce various call types, but the function of these calls has only been studied recently. Here, we used a combination of field recordings (conducted in 2017) and playback experiments (conducted in 2018) to investigate the functional significance of common cuckoo calls. We found significant differences in the characteristics between male two‐element “cu‐coo” and three‐element “cu‐cu‐coo” calls, with these two call types being used in different contexts. The three‐element male “cu‐cu‐coo” calls were associated with females emitting their “bubbling” call. Playback experiments revealed that both males and females exhibit stronger responses to playing female “bubbling” calls than with the calls of the Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipter nisus) serving as a control, suggesting a significant intraspecific communication function for this call type. However, we did not find any evidence to support mate attraction in male calls, as females were not stimulated by playback of male calls compared with sparrowhawk calls in the control group.  相似文献

Crocodilians and birds are the modern representatives of Phylum Archosauria. Although there have been recent advances in our understanding of the phylogeny and ecology of ancient archosaurs like dinosaurs, it still remains a challenge to obtain reliable information about their behaviour. The comparative study of birds and crocodiles represents one approach to this interesting problem. One of their shared behavioural features is the use of acoustic communication, especially in the context of parental care. Although considerable data are available for birds, information concerning crocodilians is limited. The aim of this review is to summarize current knowledge about acoustic communication in crocodilians, from sound production to hearing processes, and to stimulate research in this field. Juvenile crocodilians utter a variety of communication sounds that can be classified into various functional categories: (1) “hatching calls”, solicit the parents at hatching and fine‐tune hatching synchrony among siblings; (2) “contact calls”, thought to maintain cohesion among juveniles; (3) “distress calls”, induce parental protection; and (4) “threat and disturbance calls”, which perhaps function in defence. Adult calls can likewise be classified as follows: (1) “bellows”, emitted by both sexes and believed to function during courtship and territorial defence; (2) “maternal growls”, might maintain cohesion among offspring; and (3) “hisses”, may function in defence. However, further experiments are needed to identify the role of each call more accurately as well as systematic studies concerning the acoustic structure of vocalizations. The mechanism of sound production and its control are also poorly understood. No specialized vocal apparatus has been described in detail and the motor neural circuitry remains to be elucidated. The hearing capabilities of crocodilians appear to be adapted to sound detection in both air and water. The ear functional anatomy and the auditory sensitivity of these reptiles are similar in many respects to those of birds. The crocodilian nervous system likewise shares many features with that of birds, especially regarding the neuroanatomy of the auditory pathways. However, the functional anatomy of the telencephalic auditory areas is less well understood in crocodilians compared to birds.  相似文献

Captive adult common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) produce whistlelike “phee” calls in two contexts: in the home cage, where phee calls may function as part of territorial marking behavior, and when separated from social companions, where phee calls may function to reunite conspecifics. Natural and synthesized calls representing the acoustic structure of male and female calls in each context were presented to adult marmosets in a playback paradigm. Marmosets demonstrated discriminative abilities according to the context of the call and the caller's sex. Vocal and behavioral responses indicated increased vigilance and territorial behavior, following playbacks of naturally produced calls as well as synthetic calls. All animals scanned more frequently following produced calls as well as synthetic calls. All animals scanned more frequently following natural home cage as well as isolation calls, but only increased contact behavior (trills) in response to home cage calls. The responses were dimorphic according to the sex of the caller, where adult males scanned more following male calls, and adult females were more aggressive following male and female calls. The differential behavioral responses to playbacks of marmoset phee calls suggest a biological relevance to subtle differences found in the acoustic parameters of the phee call. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

In Willow Grouse Lagopus I. lagopus , as in the other Lagopus species, the hen alone incubates the eggs, leaving the nest only to defaecate and feed. The cock stands nearby to defend the nest area against predators and normally takes no direct part in egg or chick care (Johnsgard 1973, Watson & Jenkins 1964). This note discusses two cases of abnormal incubation and chick care by captive Willow Grouse cocks at the University of Tromsø's Wildlife Research Station.  相似文献

Studies of rock ptarmigan Lagopus mutus in northern latitudes have shown that, in the breeding season, the majority of cocks pair monogamously and defend small territories, whilst in most populations, a small proportion of cocks are polygynous or remain unmated. Little is known, however, on spacing behaviour and habitat use of alpine rock ptarmigan populations occurring at low densities at the southern edge of the species’ range. From 1995 to 1997, we trapped, radio-tracked and observed birds in the Central Italian Alps (elevation 2,000–3,000 m) in order to investigate spacing behaviour and habitat use in alpine landscapes where habitats offering rich food and cover are patchy. Both sexes were selective in their habitat use, and cocks did not establish territories on bare ground, artificial or nutrient rich grasslands or bogs. In the breeding season, cocks had larger home ranges than hens (cocks 99 ± 57 ha, hens 50 ± 25 ha) that overlapped with the ranges of neighbouring cocks and hens. Cocks were monogamous and defended relatively large territories (core areas of home ranges: cocks 37 ± 26 ha, hens 24 ± 12 ha), which corresponded with low spring densities (0.47–2.29 cocks km−2 and 0.35–1.60 pairs km−2). Territory size of individual cocks was negatively correlated with the amount of high quality habitat in the core-area. Our results suggest increased home ranges and large breeding territories in low density alpine rock ptarmigan populations, compared to populations occurring at higher densities in the central and northern alps, and on subarctic and arctic grounds at northern latitudes, confirming the predictions of models on food-based territoriality.  相似文献

    ABSTRACT

Observations made on the behaviour and sound recordings made of the calls chiefly in the early part of the breeding season in the South Ukraine indicate that the Great Black-headed Gull Larus ichthyaetus has a limited vocal repertoire, producing only eight different types of call associated with various behavioural contexts. Sonagraphic analysis of these sounds shows that their harmonic structure is confused, like that of the calls of L. melanocephalus and L. relictus and unlike the stronger harmonic organisation of the calls of L. argentatus, L. fuscus and L. marinus. Furthermore, there is no signal warning of approaching danger. This acoustic evidence supports the theory that L. ichthyaetus is more closely related to L.relictus and other “primitive hooded” gulls than to L. argentatus and other “large white- headed” gulls of the genus.  相似文献

Despite the regular decrease in fertility observed in hens, especially in “meat” lines, little is known about genes affecting fertility. We used the Affymetrix microarray to search for oocyte genes whose expression would vary in relation to fertility rate in both “laying” and “meat” line hens. We focused on oocyte genes because several of them have been found to be involved in fertility in other species. Based on microarray analysis, 54 and 84 genes were differentially expressed between germinal disc regions (GDR) of F1 maturation stage oocytes from hens exhibiting either high (100%) or low (from 22% to 80%) fertility rate from laying and meat lines respectively. Most of these differentially expressed genes were distributed between “laying” and “meat” lines indicating that mechanisms involved in the decrease in fertility rates in these two cases were independent. Real time RT‐PCR performed on the same samples which were used for microarray confirmed in several cases differences in gene expression levels detected by microarray. Moreover the correlations between gene expression levels and fertility rates were evaluated for the 10 most interesting genes at different stages of follicular maturation and early embryo development on individual GDR samples from hens exhibiting different fertility rates. In total, we identified five genes whose expression levels correlated with fertility rate in accordance with findings of microarray analysis and real time RT‐PCR: VWC2, CR407412, TAPA, FGL2, and TRAP6. The biological significance of these genes sheds light on potential mechanisms influencing fertility and could provide candidates for fertility markers in the hen. Mol. Reprod. ABSTRACT

Phonemic restoration, a form of temporal induction, occurs when the human brain compensates for masked or missing portions of speech by filling in obscured or nonexistent sounds. We tested for temporal induction and related abilities in females of the Gray Treefrog Hyla versicolor. The number of pulses in calls is used by females for assessment of males. Accordingly, an ability to “restore” or interpolate between masked or otherwise sonically degraded portions of calls could help females during mate choice in noisy choruses. In phonotaxis experiments, we employed unmodified calls and those that had a centrally placed gap, a region overlapped by a portion of another call or filtered noise, or replaced with filtered noise. When offered call alternatives with equivalent numbers of clear pulses, we found that females discriminated against calls with gaps two or more times greater than the natural 25 ms interpulse interval. When a gap was replaced with a zone of call overlap or noise (so, again the call durations of the alternatives were unequal), females discriminated either in favour (overlap) of the modified stimuli or failed to discriminate (noise). However, when the unmodified and modified stimuli were the same duration, females discriminated against the latter. Normal calls were also chosen when paired against calls with multiple noise sections. Pulses formed from noise bursts were attractive, but less so than normal pulses. In single speaker tests, standardized rates of movement did not differ between calls containing noise segments of different duration. Our results therefore do not indicate that females of the Gray Treefrog employ a form of temporal induction that is fully restorative. However, the data indicate that acoustically anomalous sections of calls can retain attractive potential provided acoustic energy and pulses are present.  相似文献

Different mechanisms have been proposed for encoding information into vocalizations: variation of frequency or temporal characteristics, variation in the rate of vocalization production, and use of different vocalization types. We analyze the effect of rate variation on the dual function of chip calls (contact and alarm) produced by White‐eared Ground‐sparrows (Melozone leucotis). We conducted an acoustic playback experiment where we played back 1 min of four chip call rates (12, 36, 60, 84 calls/min). We measured the response of territorial pairs using behavioral responses, and fine structural features of calls produced in response to those playbacks. White‐eared Ground‐sparrows showed more intense behavioral responses to higher than lower call rate playbacks. Both individuals of the pair approached the source of the playback stimulus faster, produced the first vocalization faster, produced more vocalizations, and spent more time close to the stimulus in higher call rate than in lower call rate playbacks. Frequency and duration characteristics of calls (chip and tseet) were similar in response to all call rate playbacks. Our playback experiment elicited different intensity of behavioral responses, suggesting that risk‐based information is encoded in call rate. Our results suggest that variation in the rate of chip call production serves a dual function in this species; calls are used at lower rates for pair contact and at higher rates for alarm/mobbing signals.  相似文献

The acoustic adaptation hypothesis is based on the assumption that senders are directionally selected to maximize transmission and minimize degradation; however, the two aims are not necessarily convergent. In complex habitats, where more effects that might potentially cause attenuation and degradation co‐occur and longer transmission must incur a higher cost, signals should attenuate faster and have shorter transmission ranges. At the same time, such signals should be more resistant to degradation in order to preserve their communicatory function. Based on a sound transmission experiment, we tested the evidence for these predictions using territorial calls of three sympatric species of rails, inhabiting habitats with increasing complexity: Corncrake Crex crex, Spotted Crake Porzana porzana and Water Rail Rallus aquaticus. In the experiment, the calls were broadcasted with similar amplitudes through a heterogeneous habitat inhabited by all three species and rerecorded at different distances up to 320 m. Despite standardized amplitudes and habitats, calls of the species living in simpler habitats had longer transmission ranges but were more susceptible to degradation than calls of the species living in more complex habitats. Our results suggest that narrow frequency bandwidth is an adaptation of species inhabiting complex habitats that helps their calls to degrade less at the cost of stronger attenuation and shorter transmission range. By contrast, wide frequency bandwidth extends the range but increases degradation and thus it is used only by species inhabiting structurally simpler habitats. This study shows that, in more complex habitats, the clarity of the message is preserved at the cost of range.  相似文献

Word responses have been used to dedde whether pictures of expressive faces or postures portray truthful expressions. Previous investigators have assumed words are used only as symbols of “meaning”. They did not appreciate the use of words as symbols of “sorting”. If one viewer calls two photographs “angry” and another viewer calls the same two photographs “happy,” the viewers may disagree in their “meanings” but they agree in their ‘sortings” both agree each photograph portrays the same expression. Sorting groups reveal how the visual system processes photographic images.  相似文献

The responses of male European water frogs (the two species Rana lessonae and Rana ridibunda and their hybrid, Rana esculenta) to playback of their mating and territorial calls were studied during the mating season. In order to select biologically relevant intensities for the presentation of the recorded calls, the sound pressure of the calls produced by the frogs themselves was established prior to the experiment. At a distance of 1 m the most intense calls were those of R. ridibunda, with a sound pressure of 110 dB (peak SPL). The smaller males of R. esculenta gave calls about 5 dB lower in intensity. The calls of R. lessonae, the smallest phenotype, were still less intense, 10 dB lower than those of R. ridibunda. The territorial calls of all three phenotypes elicited territorial calls in all of the males tested, as a rule accompanied by approach to the sound source. The sound pressure required to elicit a vocal response was nearly the same for each of the three different territorial calls. Sometimes encounter calls and warning calls were given in addition to territorial calls. When the mating calls were presented at low intensity, in some cases the males responded with their own mating calls. Mating calls at higher intensity elicited the same behavior that appeared following presentation of territorial calls, but significantly higher sound pressures were required to elicit such a response to mating calls than to territorial calls. The males of R. lessonae and R. esculenta did not respond to the mating calls of R. ridibunda, and each of them had significantly lower thresholds to the mating call of its own phenotype than to that of the other. The males of R. ridibunda responded only to conspecific mating calls. The vocal-response thresholds are compared with those of the electrodermal response reacting to the same stimuli. The significance of the different calls of the European water frogs is discussed.  相似文献

Goshawks and pygmy owls responded to recordings of passerine alarm calls by correctly orienting to their source. The seeet, or “aerial predator” alarm call which is generally assumed to be “non-localizable”, while it elicited fewer responses than did mobbing calls, was nevertheless accurately localized by all birds that did respond. The evolution of alarm calls is discussed in terms of efficient prey communication, following Darwin's “antithesis principle”, rather than predator selection for non-localizability.  相似文献

“Chick-a-dee” calls of the black-capped chickadee (Parus atricapillus) constitute a combinatorial system of animal communication, apparently the only such system yet described. Four note-types, which may be omitted or repeated a variable number of times, occur in a fixed sequence (A–B–C–D) to constitute calls. Quantitative analyses determining the nature of departures from first-order transitional probabilities between successive notes revealed a variety of results that point consistently to two underlying features of calls. (1) Some constraint operates to limit the length of calls, as manifest in shortening of repetition-strings and omitting of note-types expected to follow. (2) There is an opposing tendency to include at least one or two D-notes at the end of a call, regardless of the overall length. The second feature suggests important semantic properties of D-notes, especially the ratio of D s to other note-types and the flock-specific acoustical structure of D-notes. The constraint on length of call does not appear intimately related to semantic causes, but may instead be determined by the maximum duration of continuous phonation, in parallel with the fundamental breath-group of human speech. In this respect, a “chick-a-dee” call resembles an entire “natural sentence” of spoken human language.  相似文献
