ABSTRACT

The Northern White Rhinoceros Ceratotherium simum cottoni is a subspecies of the White Rhino that is almost extinct in the wild. We studied the last reproducing herd kept in Zoo Dvur Kralove to describe its vocal repertoire. The calls produced by eight individuals were recorded and analysed as concerned both sound properties and behavioural contexts in which they were emitted. We distinguished 11 calls belonging to four categories: (1) tonal harmonic sounds, (2) puffing sounds, (3) growling sounds, and (4) repetitive sounds. We found an apparent similarity between acoustic parameters of homologous calls recorded in both white rhino subspecies. We further confirmed that the repertoire of white rhino calls is much larger than that reported in other rhino species. We tentatively interpret this finding as an adaptation to increased sociality. Four calls reach the infrasound range; nevertheless, they are probably not used for communication over distance. This is obvious in the case of the grouch call, which contains the highest infrasound component. There are, however, other candidates for such a communication function: the repetitive pant sound, which is not known in other rhino species. We hypothesise that the repetitions may enhance their audibility in the typical open habitats of white rhinos.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Five distinct song types of the genus Mecopoda were found in Southern India. Four were morphologically indistinguishable. Some of them were both sympatric and had synchronous breeding seasons. The songs of these five song types ranged from simple short chirps to highly complex songs with multiple components. The temporal patterns of the songs of the five song types were very distinctive, whereas their spectral features were similar. Component elements of the different songs were distinct despite overall similarity. The song types possibly represent sibling species.  相似文献

Modern advances in acoustic technology have made possible new and broad ranges of research in bioacoustics, particularly with regard to echolocating bats. In the present study, we present an acoustic guide to the calls of 15 species of bats in the Arava rift valley, Israel, with a focus on their bioacoustics, habitat use and explaining differences between similar species. We also describe a potential case of frequency separation where four bat species using six call types appear to separate the frequencies of their calls to minimize overlap. The studied community of bat species is also found in other Middle Eastern deserts including the deserts of Jordan, Syria and Saudi Arabia and we hope that data gathered will benefit other bat researchers in the region.  相似文献

Echolocation calls of four species of insectivorous bats of central Chile were recorded and characterized to determine vocal signatures that allow their identification in the field. Pulses of Tadarida brasiliensis were characterized by the highest duration and the lowest values for all frequencies, which do not overlap those of the remaining species. Tadarida emits narrowband, shallow frequency-modulated search calls. All three vespertilionid species studied (Histiotus montanus, Lasiurus varius and Myotis chiloensis) showed similar echolocation design to one another, consisting of a downward frequency modulation at the beginning of the signal followed by a narrowband quasi-constant frequency component; however, their calls differ by their spectral characteristics. Discriminant function analysis of six acoustic parameters (duration, initial frequency, slope frequency modulation, peak frequency, minimal and maximal frequencies) gave an overall classification of 87.4%, suggesting species could be correctly classified based on echolocation calls. Call duration and minimal frequency were the variables most important for species identification.  相似文献

Research on African elephant (Loxodonta africana) vocal communication has increased in recent years, yet there has been very little data collected on the vocal production of infant African elephants. Vocalizations were recorded from a group of five adult female African elephants and 3 dependent offspring (1 male and 2 female) at Disney's Animal Kingdom, Florida, U.S.A., using custom-designed audio-recording collars worn by the adult females. We measured both source and filter features of infant ‘rumble’ vocalizations made during affiliative social interactions and after cessation of nursing from adult females. Rumble vocalizations produced in the ‘nurse cessation’ context exhibited an upward shift in formant frequency locations, compared to rumbles produced during the ‘affiliation’ context. Additionally, call duration increased and fundamental frequencies decreased after nurse cessations for the male, but both females showed the opposite acoustic response. When infant rumbles accompanied nurse cessations, nursing was more likely to resume within 30 seconds compared to nurse cessations without vocalizations. These results suggest that infant rumbles associated with cessation of nursing reflect the motivational state of infants and may influence maternal responsiveness.  相似文献

研究了同域分布的中华菊头蝠(Rhinolophus sinicus)与中菊头蝠(Rhinolophus affinis)的食性、形态、回声定位声波及捕食时间.中华菊头蝠与中菊头蝠均属于中等体型的菊头蝠,前臂长分别为(51.25±0.22) mm和(52.40±0.37) mm;悬挂状态下的回声定位声波均为典型的调频-恒频-调频(FM-CM-FM)型叫声,峰频分别为(82.07±0.17) kHz和(84.41±0.48) kHz.粪便分析显示中华菊头蝠与中菊头蝠分别捕食9目和7目昆虫,均以鳞翅目(Lepidiptera)和鞘翅目(Coleoptera)昆虫为主要食物(体积百分比总和> 90%),捕食鳞翅目昆虫的体积百分比差异显著,对猎物大小(以鞘翅目昆虫体长衡量)的选择无显著差异.中华菊头蝠与中菊头蝠的营养生态位宽度分别为2.38和2.28,重叠度达0.91,营养生态位未发生明显分化,但充足的食物资源促进了二者的共存.另外,2种菊头蝠的感官生态位和时间生态位未发生明显分化.由2种菊头蝠的翼载和峰频的差异推测二者发生了空间生态位和捕食微生境的分化,这也可能促进了二者的共存.  相似文献

Logging activities and the associated creation of roads and tracks can disturb and fragment forests, which may lead to a loss of forest‐dependent species and possibly favour nonforest generalists and edge species. The effects of such disturbance are poorly known for African insectivorous bats. We studied the activity patterns of insectivorous bats in a tropical African forest at Kibale National Park, Uganda, using an Anabat bat detector. The echolocation calls of the vespertilionid bat Neoromicia nana were the most frequently detected. This species was most active in the first 5 h after sunset with activity declining rapidly after midnight until sampling finished at 01:00 h. There was no difference in activity of N. nana levels between logged or undisturbed forest; however, this species exhibited higher levels of activity along the wide tracks running through the two forests than either 30 m off these tracks or along the narrow forest trails. The wing morphology and echolocation call of N. nana may be constraining it to flying in uncluttered space on the edge of the forest, penetrating mostly along wider tracks and roads. Further research (in particular radio‐telemetry) is required to test and validate these data.  相似文献

Female greater wax moths Galleria mellonella display by wing fanning in response to bursts of ultrasonic calls produced bymales. The temporal and spectral characteristics of these callsshow some similarities with the echolocation calls of batsthat emit frequency-modulated (FM) signals. Female G. mellonellatherefore need to distinguish between the attractive signalsof male conspecifics, which may lead to mating opportunities,and similar sounds made by predatory bats. We therefore predictedthat (1) females would display in response to playbacks of male calls; (2) females would not display in response to playbacksof the calls of echolocating bats (we used the calls of Daubenton'sbat Myotis daubentonii as representative of a typical FM echolocatingbat); and (3) when presented with male calls and bat callsduring the same time block, females would display more whenperceived predation risk was lower. We manipulated predationrisk in two ways. First, we varied the intensity of bat callsto represent a nearby (high risk) or distant (low risk) bat.Second, we played back calls of bats searching for prey (lowrisk) and attacking prey (high risk). All predictions weresupported, suggesting that female G. mellonella are able todistinguish conspecific male mating calls from bat calls, andthat they modify display rate in relation to predation risk.The mechanism (s) by which the moths separate the calls ofbat and moth must involve temporal cues. Bat and moth signalsdiffer considerably in duration, and differences in durationcould be encoded by the moth's nervous system and used in discrimination.  相似文献

Understanding the winter behavior of bats in temperate North America can provide insight into how bats react to perturbations caused by natural disturbances such as weather, human‐induced disturbances, or the introduction of disease. This study measured the activity patterns of bats outside of their hibernaculum and asked how this winter activity varied by time, temperature, bat species, body condition, and WNS status. Over the course of three winters (2011–2013), we collected acoustic data and captured bats outside of five hibernacula in Tennessee, United States. During this time, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the causative agent of white‐nose syndrome, became established in hibernacula throughout the region, allowing us to track disease‐related changes in the winter behavior of ten bat species. We determined that bats in the southeastern United States were active during winter regardless of disease. We recorded activity outside of hibernacula at temperatures as low as ?13°C. Although bat activity was best determined by a combination of variables, the strongest factor was mean daily temperature (R 2 = .2879, F 1,1450 = 586.2, p  < .0001). Bats that left the hibernacula earlier in evening had lower body condition than those that left 2–4 hr after sunset (F 7,932 = 7.225, p  < .0001, Tukey HSD, p  < .05). The number of daytime emergences from hibernacula, as determined via acoustic detection, increased the longer a site was P. destructans positive (F 3,17 808 = 124.48, p  < .0001, Tukey HSD, p  < .05). Through the use of passive acoustic monitoring and monthly captures, we determined that winter activity was driven by both ambient temperature and the presence of P. destructans .  相似文献
