Are young songbirds ready to learn virtually any song, or are they predisposed to learn songs of their own species? To explore this question tests were conducted on the equipotentiality of auditory song learning stimuli in the song sparrow. 23 males reared as nestlings were exposed to tape recordings of their own and other species songs in early life and subsequent song production was analyzed for imitations. Birds exposed to natural song sparrow songs, including their fathers', and equal numbers of swamp sparrow songs, strongly preferred conspecific songs. They neither favored nor eschewed paternal songs despite having had access to them for 6–10 days as nestlings. In three other experiments synthetic songs were used in which some properties were held constant and others were systematically varied. Birds were exposed to 1–4 segmented songs varying in phrase order, tempo and syllable number, each synthesized in two versions, one from conspecific and the other from heterospecific (swamp sparrow) song syllables. With one-segmented songs (alien syntax) subjects favored conspecific over heterospecific syllable songs. Heterospecific syllables were rendered more acceptable by incorporation into two-segmented trilled songs (more song sparrow-like syntax). Heterogeneous summation of phonological and syntactical cues appeared to occur. There was also evidence of interaction between phonology and syntax. When another phrase type, the note complex, was added, in three- and four-segmented songs, a preference for conspecific syllables reappeared. Heterospecific syllables may be more readily accepted as a trilled sequence than without repetition, as in a note-complex. When phrase structure within four-segmented songs was varied, birds favored patterns most like normal conspecific song. We conclude that there are innate learning preferences in the song sparrow, based on note and syllabic structure (phonology and syllabic syntax), and temporal organization of phrases (segmental syntax), differing from those of the closely related swamp sparrow, Melospiza georgiana, in which song syntax plays no role in learning preferences.  相似文献

In males of several songbird species, the morphology of forebrain nuclei that control song changes seasonally. The only seasonally breeding songbird in which seasonal changes in the structure of song control nuclei have been reported not to occur is the nonmigratory Nuttall's subspecies of white-crowned sparrow. In the present study, we manipulated photoperiod and plasma testosterone concentrations in captive male white-crowned sparrows of the migratory Gambel's subspeices. Males exposed to photoperiods and plasma testosterone concentrations typical of those experienced by wild breeding males had larger song control nuclei than males held on a winter photoperiod. We also found seasonal change in stereotypy of spectral and temporal parameters of song in wild Gambel's white-crowned sparrows. We hypothesize that seasonal changes in song control nuclei may correlate with seasonal changes in song stereotypy. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Cultural Evolution of Puget Sound White-Crowned Sparrow Song Dialects   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The songs of male Puget Sound white‐crowned sparrows currently form about 12 dialects along the Pacific Northwest coast. In his survey of 1970, Baptista (Condor 1977; 79: 356–370) defined six of the dialects based on the song's terminal trill because most males at each locality shared the simple syllables (SSs) in this trill. The complex syllables (CSs) in the song's introduction varied among males at a locality, and were often shared among localities. From 1997 to 2004 we revisited nine of the sites Baptista studied to determine whether the SSs and CSs had changed over the 30‐yr interval. Using Baptista's catalogs of SS and CS types as bases for comparison, we found that the relative proportions of CS types changed significantly more over time than did the proportions of SS types. These results suggest that SSs and CSs evolve independently. Observations were also made on the developmental mechanisms that either produce diversity or maintain uniformity in song phrases. In a survey of 670 field‐recorded songs, unique improvizations occurred significantly more often in CSs than in SSs. In a laboratory experiment using hand‐reared males and multiple song tutors, males were significantly more accurate in imitating SSs than CSs. In choosing their final song to keep from their overproduced repertoire, yearling males tended to retain the song type that matched the SSs in the song played back to them. We conclude by discussing how differences in the functions served by these two song phrases may have led to their different rates of cultural evolution.  相似文献

Six female song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) and six female swamp sparrows (Melospiza georgiana) were treated with oestradiol, and their response to song measured by frequency and intensity of copulation-solicitation display. Test stimuli were synthetic songs composed of either song sparrow or swamp sparrow syllables assembled in either song-sparrow-like or swamp-sparrow-like temporal patterns. Female song sparrows responded preferentially to songs containing their own species' syllables and to songs containing their own species' temporal patterns. Swamp sparrows were also sensitive to both syllable type and temporal, pattern, in contrast to male swamp sparrows, which show no preference for swamp sparrow temporal patterns.  相似文献

Song learning in birds is paradoxical. Without tutoring, songbirds do not develop normal songs. Yet despite this inability, birds possess extensive foreknowledge, in a mechanistic sense, about the normal song of their species. When given a choice of tape recordings, young, n?ive songbirds select sounds of their own species for imitation. We tape-tutored white-crowned sparrows, Zonotrichia leucophrys oriantha, with a set of manipulated songs to investigate whether the introductory whistle universally present in white-crowned sparrow song guides selective song learning in this species. Our results confirm that this whistle serves as a cue for song learning, enabling acquisition of normally rejected sounds of other species, including hermit thrush, Catharus guttatus, notes, which have a sound quality distinct from that of natural white-crowned sparrow phrases. Our results support the conclusion that sensory mechanisms rather than motor constraints are primarily responsible for the selectivity seen in song learning. Bird song has the potential to convey a variety of information about the singer, including the singer’s current motivational state. A recent review by Searcy & Beecher (2009) (Anim. Behav. 78, 2009; 1281) emphasized how little is currently known about whether song functions as an aggressive signal in territorial interactions. A recent observational study of song length variation in the Puget Sound white‐crowned sparrow reported that males shorten the terminal trill in their single song type while singing close by another male, and shorten the trill even further immediately before chasing the opponent. Here, we report the results of two song playback experiments designed to test whether males distinguish the differences in song length that occur in agonistic and non‐agonistic contexts. We found that males gave stronger responses, as measured by close approach distances, to either a series of songs increasing in duration (compared to a series decreasing in duration), or to long loud songs (compared to short soft songs). In both experiments, males gave weaker responses to the stimuli hypothesized to be more aggressive. Males shortened their songs in response to both simulated intrusions. Combined with the observational data on song variation in different contexts, these experiments support the conclusion that song length variation contains information about aggressive motivation in the white‐crowned sparrow.  相似文献

In song learning, white-crowned sparrows ( Zonotrichia leucophrys ) begin memorizing conspecific song models at around 20 d of age. Even prior to song memorization, however, between 10 and 20 d of age, these birds respond differently to playbacks of conspecific and heterospecific songs. To investigate the acoustic cues underlying this early song discrimination, we measured the vocal responses of newly fledged young to playbacks of modified conspecific and heterospecific songs. Fledgling white-crowned sparrows responded more strongly to songs containing conspecific notes than to songs containing notes from other species. In contrast, the presence or placement of an introductory whistle, present in all white-crowned sparrow songs, did not affect response levels. A whistle has previously been shown to serve as an acoustic cue for song memorization and production in this species. Such different responses to the species-typical introductory whistle at different stages suggests that developmental changes occur in the template system underlying song learning, the factors governing song recognition, or both.  相似文献

Song of passerine birds is one of the few animal signals that is learned and that improves with practice. Vocal practice is crucial early in life to perfect a song imitation, but it also occurs throughout life and may continue to improve aspects of song performance. Differences in song performance among males that share song types, that is sing structurally similar songs may be particularly salient to receivers. We here test the hypothesis that aspects of song performance improve in a songbird species that deletes song types from its repertoire early in the first breeding season to share their final single song type with territorial neighbours. Over 3 yrs, we recorded songs in a population of Puget Sound white‐crowned sparrows Zonotrichia leucophrys pugetensis and measured percentage peak performance and consistency thereof in all of the song types in each male's repertoire. We found that within the first year on territory, percentage peak performance was higher in shared than unshared songs but did not change from first to second recording. Contrary to the hypothesis that song performance improves with age, song performance declined from the first to the second year. Our results support the hypothesis that high‐performance singers share songs. We did not find support for song performance improving within or between years, like it does in some other songbird species.  相似文献

A swamp sparrow song is a 2-s string of about 10 identical syllables, each made up of two to five distinct notes. Naturally-occurring syllables are highly polymorphic. The development of syllable patterning is strongly influenced by imitation. Analysis of 452 songs indicates that, whether simple or complex, all syllables were assembled from the same species-universal set of note types, consisting of six basic categories. Two populations studied intensively, 1000 km apart, differed in the number of notes per syllable and the ordering of note types within a syllable. It appears that song dialects can be defined in the swamp sparrow by reference to these features. The process of song learning in the swamp sparrow thus consists of the selection of a particular number, timing and sequence of notes from a limited set of types. While some degree of selection of within-type note variants is possible, the structure of the major categories of swamp sparrow note types is in large degree genetically preordained.  相似文献

The white‐crowned sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys, has served as a model species for studies of song and reproductive physiology. Here, we describe primers for 21 novel microsatellite loci isolated from the Puget Sound subspecies, Zonotrichia leucophrys pugetensis, which will be useful for parentage and population genetic analyses. Based on genotypes from seven to 22 adult birds from one population, the average number of alleles per locus was 10.9 (four to 21 alleles) and observed heterozygosity varied from 0.50 to 1.00. All loci also amplified products in at least one of three other passerine species tested.  相似文献

Song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) songs are composed largely of pure-tonal sounds. This paper investigates the role that learning plays in the development of the tonal structure of song sparrow songs, as well as the role that tonal quality plays in determining the suitability of songs as models for learning. 20 birds were trained with both normal pure-tonal songs and modified songs that included harmonic overtones. The harmonic-modified songs were obtained from birds singing in a helium atmosphere, the result of which is to perturb vocal tract resonances and thus alter a song's tonal quality. Subjects learned equally well from normal and harmonic models. Birds that learned material from harmonic models reproduced some of this material with harmonic overtones, but the majority of notes learned from harmonic models were subsequently reproduced as pure-tonal copies. Thus, the tonal structure of songs does not influence young song sparrows in their selection of song models, but there is a strong tendency to reproduce songs in a pure-tonal fashion, even if learned from harmonic models.  相似文献

Territorial male veeries (Catharus fuscescens) were presented with three series of reorganised songs to determine the functional properties of song structure. Songs consist of three parts: a low frequency initial phrase, a higher frequency middle phrase, and again a lower frequency end phrase. The latter two consist of vibrato syllables. Three series of experiments were performed, using various combinations of song syllables. In Series I, songs consisted of repetitions of a single syllable, one from each part of the song. Veeries responded to syllables from the middle and end phrases as to normal songs, both in localisation and in vocal responses. However, they showed little localisation and vocalisation responses to the introductory syllables. In Series II and III, veeries responded significantly more to songs in which syllables from the middle and end phrases were presented in proper sequence, rather than not. The minimum requirements for intraspecific recognition were determined in relation to the number and order of syllables in the song.  相似文献

Male songbirds approach females by using their songs. Knowing what females perceive and prefer in male songs is an important aspect of understanding courtship behavior. Male Bengalese finches (Lonchura striata var. domestica) sing complex sequence patterns with their own variety of elements. We tested female preference with phonologically different songs and sequentially different songs using an operant selection task. In the first experiment we presented the father’s song and an unfamiliar song that were phonologically different. Females clearly preferred the father’s song over a novel song. In the second experiment, we used the father’s song and its element order reversed song to test female preference for the difference in element sequence. In the third experiment, we presented different sequence complexity songs edited from the same unfamiliar song elements to test female preference for complex sequence. Females did not show a significant preference in either the second or third experiment. Results show that female Bengalese finches discriminated the difference in song elements, preferred familiar songs, and did not show preference for difference of sequence. This study did not support evidence that female Bengalese finches prefer a complex sequence. However, in future research, we should carefully investigate female preference for choosing mates in a natural context.  相似文献

The advertising vocalization of the clamorous reed warbler, one of the least studied representatives of the genus in the Palearctic, has been analyzed. In this species, advertising vocalization consists of compact acoustic constructs (songs) separated by pauses. The duration of songs (median 3.6 s) and pauses (median 2.9 s) varies only slightly. Each song consists of three to four different or identical syllables. Syllables (stereotyped acoustic constructs) consist of two to four notes. Each male has from 5 to 25 syllables in his repertoire. A sharp contrast between low-frequency and high-frequency notes and strict sequence of these notes in syllables (low-frequency notes come first, then follow high-frequency notes) are characteristic of this song. All types of syllables in the song of a given male can be divided into two groups: initiator syllables and other syllables. Initiator syllables most often occur at the beginning, while others occur in the middle or at the end of the song. Stable links between syllables have been revealed: the majority of them occur in the song together with certain syllables (one or two) of other types. The whole range of songs of each individual can be divided into several classes. A certain type of initiator syllable and a certain set of subsequent syllables are characteristic of each class. However, the variability of songs within each class is quite high. Modes of immediate and eventual variety alternate in the sequence of songs from different classes. Thus, 47.4% of songs are followed by a song from the same class (eventual variety), while 52.6% of songs are followed by a song from a different class (immediate variety). The advertising vocalization of the clamorous reed warbler is compared with that of other representatives of the genus Acrocephalus.  相似文献

The anterior forebrain (AF) pathway of songbirds has an essential but poorly understood function during song learning, a process requiring auditory experience. Consistent with a role in processing auditory information, two nuclei of the AF, the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (lMAN) and Area X (X), contain some of the most complex auditory neurons known. In adult zebra finches, these neurons are strongly selective for both spectral and temporal properties of song: They respond more robustly to the bird's own song (BOS) than to songs of conspecific individuals, and they respond less well to BOS if it is played in reverse. lMAN and X neurons of young finches early in the process of song learning (30–45 days of age) are also song responsive, but lack the song and order selectivity present in adult birds. By an intermediate stage of learning (60 days), when birds have experience of both tutor song and their own developing (plastic) song, AF neurons have significant song and order selectivity for both tutor song and BOS (in this case, plastic song). The degree of BOS selectivity is still less than that found in adults, however. In addition, neurons at 60 days are heterogenous in their preference for BOS versus tutor song: Most prefer BOS, some prefer tutor song, and others respond equally to both songs. The selectivity of adult AF auditory neurons therefore arises rapidly during development from neurons that are initially unselective. These neurons are one of the clearest examples of experience-dependent acquisition of complex stimulus selectivity. Moreover, the neural selectivity for both BOS and tutor song at 60 days raises the possibility that experience of both songs during learning contributes to the properties of individual AF neurons. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Song divergence between closely related taxa may play a critical role in the evolutionary processes of speciation and hybridization. We explored song variation between two Ecuadorian subspecies of the gray‐breasted wood‐wren (Henicorhina leucophrys) and tested the impact of song divergence on response behaviors. Songs were significantly different between the two subspecies, even between two parapatric populations 10 km apart. Playback experiments revealed an asymmetric response pattern to these divergent subspecies specific songs; one subspecies responded more to songs of its own subspecies than to the other subspecies’ songs, whereas the second responded equally strongly to songs of both subspecies. While song parameters revealed a mixed pattern of divergence between allopatric and parapatric populations, the majority of spectral characteristics showed increased divergence in parapatry, suggestive of character displacement. This increased song divergence in parapatry appeared to affect behavioral responses to playback as discriminating responses were most prominent in parapatry and against parapatric songs. The clear behavioral impact of subspecies‐specific song differences supports a potential role for song as an acoustic barrier to gene flow. The asymmetric nature of the responses suggests that song divergence could affect the direction of gene flow and the position of the subspecies‐specific transition.  相似文献

Female songbirds are thought to make mate choices based on aspects of male song quality. Male canaries (Serinus canaria) produce songs with “special” syllables that have been shown to be highly salient to female listeners – eliciting high rates of sexual displays and enhanced immediate early gene (IEG) expression. Immunohistochemistry for the IEG ZENK was used to examine the effects of experience with these syllables on activity in the caudal mesopallium (CMM) and nidocaudal mesopallium (NCM), two auditory areas important in processing conspecific song. Photostimulated female canaries were housed in sound attenuated chambers and played pseudosongs containing either three special syllables or three non‐special syllables, an intro, and an outro sequence. Females that heard special syllable pseudosongs exhibited higher ZENK expression in CMM. To assess the effects of experience, photostimulated females were pair housed and exposed to playback of song with or without special syllables for 14 days. After transfer to individual housing, birds were played one of the aforementioned stimuli or silence. ZENK expression in CMM and NCM was equivalent for song with and without special syllables, but significantly lower for silence. Females who experienced song with special syllables had lower plasma estradiol concentrations after final song playback. This study indicates that CMM exhibits an IEG response bias to special syllables in limited acoustic contexts, but not in full song, which may contain additional biologically relevant information. Furthermore, estradiol concentrations may mediate changes in song responses, serving as a mechanism for modulating mate choice in differing song environments.  相似文献

Song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) songs are composed largely of pure-tone notes. Song sparrows raised in acoustic isolation (i.e. never hearing conspecific songs) tend to produce half of their notes with harmonic overtones, an atypical tonal structure, suggesting that exposure to pure tones is necessary for the development of normal tonal quality. The experiment presented here directly investigated the influence of early exposure to songs with different tonal qualities on subsequent production. Seven young song sparrow males were exposed to 16 normal, pure-tone song sparrow songs and 6 males were exposed to the same 16 song types with added harmonic overtones. Birds in both groups learned equally well, confirming an earlier finding that tonal quality does not influence selection of models during the sensitive period for song acquisition. Birds exposed exclusively to harmonic song models, however, produced over 85% of their learned notes in a pure-tone fashion, even though they had never heard pure-tone sounds. Thus, pure tones do not need to be experienced directly by song sparrows, but exposure to some features of species-typical song models appears to facilitate the reproduction of models in a pure-tone fashion.  相似文献
