Summary The morphology of the circumoral nerve ring of an ophiuroid, Ophiura texturata, is described. Particular attention is given to a system of fibres which are giant by echinoderm standards, and which occur both in the ectoneural and hyponeural parts of the nerve ring. The giant fibres in the ectoneural tissue do not show the complicated pattern of distribution present in the segmental ganglia of the radial nerves. The main areas of neuropil in the ectoneural tissue are associated with small axon bundles which leave the nerve ring to innervate the gut and disc. The hyponeural tissue is exclusively motor and is involved in the innervation of the main radial and inter-radial muscles of the disc. Branches of the motor nerves are also associated with juxtaligamental tissue, the secretory products from which are thought to influence the plasticity of collagenous connective tissue. The structure of the circumoral nerve ring suggests that it serves as a functional connection between the nerve cords in adjacent radii. The ultrastructural evidence does not support the view that the circumoral nerve ring represents a central nervous system.  相似文献

Timing of fission in the fissiparous starfish Allostichaster capensis under laboratory conditions is described. A. capensis generally splits across the disc along the fission plane during the spring, and then each half regenerates the missing arms during the rest of the year. The fission process can last eight hours. The healing process starts immediately after fission. A. capensis has impressive regeneration ability, including a comet, without signs of disc, regenerated two new arms.  相似文献

Ophioderma peruana sp. n. is a new species of Ophiodermatidae, extending the distribution of the genus Ophioderma to Lobos de Afuera Island, Peru, easily distinguishable from its congeners by its peculiarly fragmented dorsal arm plates. Dense granules, rounded or polygonal cover the disc, the radial shields may be naked or completely covered by granules. A good character for recognizing this species in the field is the dorsal side of the disc which is brown with disc granules lighter cream and brown, the arms are mottled with whitish spots and the ventral part of the disc on the interradial part is brown and the radial part bright yellow.  相似文献

Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) ofSalmonella typhi strains, isolated from carriers and patients suffering from typhoid fever, were characterised according to their biochemical properties, morphological structure and degree of aggregation of complexes. All preparations of LPS, regardless of their origin, were morphologically heterogeneous. Free electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoresis demonstrated that LPS preparations were composed of components possessing different mobilities in electric fields. LPS of bacterial strains isolated from both carriers and patients, split upon reaction in immunoelectrophoresis with specific antiserum 73, rabbit antiserum toSalmonella typhi Vi Bhatnagar and 0–901 split into anodic and cathodio fractions. The anodic fraction reacted similarly as Vi antigen. LPS fromSalmonella typhi Ty-2 yielded only the cathodic fraction, typical for O antigen. LPS from strains whioh were passaged twice in nutritional medium possessed identical properties as LPS from fresh cultures ofSalmonella typhi. Electron microscopy revealed that LPS appears as long bands, rods, ellipsoid forms and amorphous material. Contrary to amorphous material, the bands, rods and ellipsoid forms possessed three-layer structure.  相似文献

Ant colonies can reproduce by two strategies: independent foundation, wherein the queen starts a new colony alone, and dependent foundation, in which workers assist the queen. In the queenless species Dinoponera quadriceps (Santschi), the colony reproduces obligatorily by fission, a type of dependent foundation, but this process is not well understood. This study describes a colony fission event of D. quadriceps in the field and analyzes the influence of the fission process on workers’ extra-nest behavior. Based on observations of workers outside the nest, five distinct stages were identified: monodomic stage, polydomic stage, split stage, conflict stage, and post-conflict stage. The colony was initially monodomic and then occupied a second nest before it split into two independent colonies, indicating a gradual and opportunistic dependent foundation. After the fission event, the daughter colony had aggressive conflicts with the parental colony, resulting in the latter’s disappearance. Colony fission affected workers’ extra-nest behavior by increasing the frequency of rubbing the gaster against the substrate (which probably has a chemical marking function) and by decreasing the frequency of foraging during the split stage. After the fission event, the number of foragers was halved and foragers remained nearer to the nest during extra-nest activity. The spatial closeness of the parental and daughter colonies led to competition that caused the extinction or migration of the parental colony. Intraspecific competition was indicated by foraging directionality at the colony level, whereby areas of neighbor colonies were avoided; this directionality was stronger while both colonies coexisted.  相似文献

Mitochondria are essential organelles for cell survival, programmed cell death, and autophagy. They undergo cycles of fission and fusion, which are subverted by infectious pathogens and altered in many human diseases. Mitochondrial fission is mediated by the dynamin‐related protein Drp1, but the precise mechanism of its action is not well understood. In the last and current issues of EMBO Reports, two new studies 1 2 reveal that the filamentous septin GTPases interact directly with Drp1, promoting mitochondrial fission. Moreover, mitochondria were found to promote the assembly of septin filaments into cages around cytosolic Shigella flexneri bacteria 2 , which are targeted for autophagy. Thus, septins emerge as integral components of the machinery of mitochondrial fission and may pose a novel link between mitochondria and autophagy.  相似文献

The larval chondrocranium of the pelobatoid anuran Pelodytes punctatus was studied, using Alcian blue-alizarin stained and cleared whole preparations, serial sections, and gross dissections. This beaked tadpole is an unspecialized pond dweller and its chondrocranium closely resembles those of other ecologically similar tadpoles of diverse systematic relationships. Detailed analysis, however, shows many differences among the chondrocrania of anuran larvae. Among other features, these include the configurations of suprarostrals, fronto-parietal fenestrae, palatoquadrate suspensoria, the ligamentum or cartilago tectum of the muscular process of the quadrate and the circumoral ligaments. The lateral circumoral ligament permits differentiation of beaked discoglossoidean and ranoidean larvae. Microhyloids conform to the ranoidean pattern in this feature. Pipoids either lack it or seem to conform to the discoglossoidean pattern. Use of these larval features as key characters enables assignment of Pelodytes to an uncertain position among pelobatoid frogs. This is totally congruent with previous assignments based on adult features and is used to support the hypothesis that anuran phylogenies based on larval characters will closely resemble, in major features at least, those based solely on adult characters.  相似文献

The mouth cone and mouth ring of the tardigrade Echiniscus viridissimus are described and their primary homology is assessed by comparing them to structures considered to be homologous in other heterotardigrades, eutardigrades, and ecdysozoans. In E. viridissimus the mouth cone is divided into anterior and posterior regions that differ in the ultrastructure of their cuticle. The mouth ring of the buccopharyngeal apparatus lies just anterior to the buccal tube. It is connected to it by a narrow flange or ridge of cuticle that allows the rostral end of the mouth tube to telescope part way into the mouth ring. Sensilla innervating the mouth cone and mouth ring in E. viridissimus correspond to sensilla of the circumoral and suboral sensory regions described for eutardigrades. The sensory fields, of both the mouth cone and mouth ring, exhibit two planes of mirror image or biradial symmetry. Although the relative dimensions of mouth ring differ markedly between E. viridissimus and eutardigrades, homologous areas can be identified easily. For example, the supporting rods of the mouth ring in E. viridissimus appear to be homologous to the supporting plates in the lamellae of eutardigrades. The widespread occurrence of the mouth cone and mouth ring in hetero- and eutardigrades suggests that these structures were present in the last common ancestor of all tardigrades. Expression of these characters in other ecdysozoans is more problematic. Tentatively the mouth cone and mouth ring are considered to be homologous to the circumoral plates of onychophorans and the ring of radiating plates found in the ‘Peytoia’ apparatus of Cambrian arthropods. These structures are not thought to be homologous to the introverts of scalidophorans or the circumoral structures of nematodes or nematomorphs, and are considered to be absent in these taxa. Thus, the mouth cone and mouth ring are potentially key synapomorphies for Panarthropoda.  相似文献

Characterization of proteolytic activity in preparations or fermentation broth is accomplished by methods based on a combination of disc electrophoresis and visualization of the activity. The methods permit a direct, comparison with reference preparations. All alkaline proteases studied, including the three subtilisins, were found to consist of several proteolytic components. The zymograms of the subtilisin type preparations show an irregular pattern. At least 14 different components may be observed, belonging to 6 types of mobility pattern, 3 of which could be assigned to the subtilisins. None of the components belongs to the group of metalloproteases. A quite regular pattern is shown by the zymogram of protease preparations produced by the alkalophilic Bacillus strains. A few of the components of the subtilisin preparations Maxatase and protease A were isolated by preparative disc electrophoresis and by disc electrofococusing, allowing a further characterization. Special attention was directed to the determination of properties specific for the application of subtilisins as additives in household detergents. Thermostability in sodium tripolyhosphate solution was found to range from about 10% for one of the minor components to 80% for the main component of Maxatase. Three types of curves representing the effect of pH on the activity were observed. The curve of the main component of Maxatase shows a characteristic shape with a maximum at pH 10.3: with other components lower pH optima were observed. Isoelectric points of the component were found to range from pH 7 to 10.  相似文献

Staurozoan cnidarians display an unusual combination of polyp and medusa characteristics and their morphology may be informative about the evolutionary origin of medusae. We studied neuromuscular morphology of two staurozoans, Haliclystus sanjuanensis ’ and Manania handi , using whole mount immunohistochemistry with antibodies against FMRFamide and α‐tubulin to label neurons and phalloidin to label muscles. All muscles appeared to lack striations. Longitudinal interradial muscles are probable homologues of stalk muscles in scyphopolyps, but in adult staurozoans they are elaborated to inwardly flex marginal lobes of the calyx during prey capture; these muscles are pennate in M. handi . Manubrial perradial muscles, like the manubrium itself, are an innovation shared with pelagic medusae and manubrial interradial muscles are shared with scyphozoan ephyra. Marginal muscles of M. handi displayed occasional synchronous contraction reminiscent of a medusa swim pulse, but contractions were not repetitive. The nerve net in both species showed regional variation in density and orientation of neurons. Some areas labeled predominantly by α‐tubulin antibodies (exumbrellar epidermis), other areas labeled exclusively by FMRFamide antibodies (dense plexus of neurites surrounding the base of secondary tentacles, neuronal concentration at the base of transformed primary tentacles; gastrodermal nerve net), but most areas showed a mix of neurons labeled by these two antibodies and frequent co‐labeling of neurons. Transformed primary tentacles had a concentration of FMRFamide‐immunoreactive neurons at their base that was associated with a pigment spot in M. handi; this is consistent with their homology with rhopalia of medusae, which are also derived from primary tentacles. The muscular system of these staurozoans embodies characteristics of both scyphopolyps and pelagic medusae. However, their nerve net is more polyp‐like, although marginal concentrations of the net associated with primary and secondary tentacles may facilitate the richer behavioral repertoire of staurozoans relative to polyps of other medusozoans. Wild, habituated, Japanese monkeys were observed from 1975 to 1979 on Yakushima Island, Southern Japan. The monkey troops had a continuous distribution in a warm temperate forest. Demographic data on local populations was collected. The population density was 33 animals/km2. The growth rate of the studied troop was 3.0% per year. A significant correlation between home range areas (R) and troop size (P) was found (r=0.955,p<0.005), using anR-P equation,R=1.84P. One troop split into three troops through two successive fissions. Twenty-one intertroop encounters were observed. Five types of encounters were distinguished. The encounters were apparently territorial defence. Increases in birth rate and socionomic sex ratio after the fissions were prominent. The following four factors had a direct effect upon the dispersion of the troops after fission: (1) dominance relation between the fission troops; (2) social pressure of the neighbors; (3) troop's attachment to its home range; and (4) structure of the environment. The home range of Japanese monkeys is a territory, and territoriality is a population regulating mechanism which serves to reduce competition for food.  相似文献

The small pyramidal neuron of the rat cerebral cortex   总被引:22,自引:0,他引:22
Summary The pyramidal neurons in layers II and III of the rat parietal cortex have dendritic spines which form synapses with axon terminals. These synapses have synaptic clefts containing granular material that is concentrated towards the middle of the cleft to form a plaque. Only a small amount of dense material occurs on the cytoplasmic face of the presynaptic membrane, while there is a prominent dense layer, some 300 Å deep, in the dendritic spine. When the synapses formed by the smallest dendritic spines are examined in a frontal or en face plane of section this postsynaptic density has the form of a disc. In the synapses on larger spines, the disc is perforated to form a ring, and in the largest spines a number of perforations may occur. Because of these perforations, in larger synapses sections passing at right angles to the plane of the synaptic junction may show two or more separate postsynaptic densities. The possible significance of these findings is discussed. This work was supported by United States Public Health Service Research Grant No. NB-07016 from the National Institutes of Neurological Diseases and Blindness. Summary The coronar growth of a cidaroid and an aulodont echinoid are investigated by means of tetracycline labelling. The results are compared with earlier investigations on a stirodont and on a camarodont echinoid in order to evaluate the general features of coronar growth. In all echinoids new coronar plates are added at the apical end of the corona throughout the life cycle. The plates are shifted towards the peristome and they grow peripherically. In cidaroids ambulacral (A-) plates are detached from the firm corona. They are transformed into scales covering the peristomial field. The interambulacral (IA-) plates, however, are partially reabsorbed at the peristomial margin. In this manner the oldest solitary interambulacral plates are lost. The subsequent plates are arranged in pairs. The cidaroids thus show interradial growth even at their peristomial margin. This is unique to echinoids. In non-cidaroids there is a perignathic girdle made up of paired ambulacral auricles with interambulacral ridges in between. In some species the ridge is a solitary element. Therefore interradial growth cannot occur in the peristomial margin. In other species the ridge consists of several elements, but it also grows as a whole. Slight resorption of calcite occurs in places at the peristomial margin. In other places, however, calcite is added onto the peristomial edge. In non-cidaroids, therefore, the widening of the peristome is achieved solely by means of lateral growth in the plates bordering the peristome. The shift of the coronar plates from apicad to orad in noncidaroids is a relative shift only.In all echinoids the coronar plates are arranged in meridional columns. All plates grow up to the peristome. Their growth rates are relatively uniform towards the adambulacral sutures (which run between A- and IA-columns). Their growth rates towards the perradius and the interradius respectively are high in younger plates which are positioned above the ambitus, and decrease rapidly in plates located below the ambitus. Near the peristome the interradiad and perradiad growth rates are always considerably lower than adradiad growth rates. Perradial and interradial growth serve to adjust the plates in size and shape to their respective position in the corona.  相似文献

Although trachelocercid ciliates are common in marine sandy intertidal zones, methodological difficulties mean that their biodiversity and evolutionary relationships have not been well documented. This paper investigates the morphology and infraciliature of two novel Trachelolophos and one rarely known form, Tracheloraphis similis Raikov and Kovaleva, 1968, collected from the coastal waters of southern and eastern China. The small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene sequences of two of the species are presented, allowing the phylogenetic position of the genus Trachelolophos to be revealed for the first time. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rRNA gene sequences indicate that Trachelolophos branches with Kovalevaia and forms a sister clade with the group including Prototrachelocerca, Trachelocerca and Tracheloraphis. The monophyly of Trachelocerca is not rejected by the approximately unbiased (AU) test (P = 0.209, > 0.05) but that of Tracheloraphis is rejected (P = 3e‐033, < 0.05). The newly sequenced genus Trachelolophos, and recent studies on the morphology and phylogeny of the family Trachelocercidae, suggest two new hypotheses about the evolution of the seven genera within Trachelocercidae, based on either infraciliature or molecular evidence. Both hypotheses suppose the compound circumoral kineties in the oral apparatus is a plesiomorphic feature while the single circumoral kinety is synapomorphic. More evidence is still needed, however, as to whether the closed circumoral kinety with no brosse feature in Trachelocerca is ancestral or secondarily reduced. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

The tetraradial or pentaradial fossil embryos and related hatched individuals from the early Cambrian Kuanchuanpu Formation are of great interest for understanding the early evolution of medusozoans. The phylogenetic and evolutionary significance of their external and internal characters (e.g. manubrium, tentacles, septa and claustra) is still controversial. Here we describe a new pentamerous medusozoan, Hanagyroia orientalis gen. et sp. nov., characterized by five well-developed perradial oral lips around a remarkably large manubrium, a conspicuous equatorial groove, and five short interradial pairs of extensile tentacles at the bell margin. Internally, five broad and stout interradial septa join horizontally to form the claustra. Hanagyroia orientalis lacks the frenula, apertural lappet and velarium seen in coeval microfossils and extant cubozoans. Although H. orientalis resembles extant coronate scyphozoans in its round medusa-like bell margin and equatorial groove, cladistic analysis suggests close affinity with cubozoans. Hanagyroia may represent an intermediate morphological type between scyphozoans and cubozoans. The well-developed oral lips and paired short strong tentacles of Hanagyroia suggest direct development.  相似文献

Spondylosis in the desert sand rat (Psammomys obesus) has been studied as a model for intervertebral disc degeneration. Reducing sugars, which react with protein amino groups to form a diverse group of moieties with fluorescence and cross-linking properties, have been implicated in the structural and functional alterations of proteins that occur during aging and long-term diabetes. This study was undertaken to determine the changes in two matrix cross-links of the intervertebral disc and to study their association with aging. Two types of cross-links were studied: the physiological cross-link, pyridinoline, which is initiated by lysyl oxidase; and the non-enzymatically initiated cross-link, pentosidine. A significant increase in pentosidine, but not pyridinoline, was observed in the intervertebral disc with aging. Radiological, histological and biochemical findings support a hypothesis that subchondral bone responses, marked by increased bone density, contribute to alterations in the intervertebral disc. Cross-link changes in the structural proteins of the disc may contribute to the progressive fibrocartilage degradation typical of intervertebral disc disease as an effect of age.  相似文献

Lacalli, T. C. and Gilmour, T. H. J. 2001. Locomotory and feeding effectors of the tornaria larva of Balanoglossus biminiensis . — Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 82 : 117–126
The tornaria ciliary bands and oesophagus were examined ultrastructurally to identify the neural components that control larval behaviour. The circumoral ciliary band is known to be innervated in part by fibres from the apical plate and adoral nerve centres. Within the band itself, however, the only neurones we could find were multipolar cells, an unusual cell type with apical processes that traverse the surface of the band. Similar cells occur in the circumoral bands of echinoderm larvae. The tornaria telotroch has a much larger nerve, but no neurones were found either in the band or nearby, so the source of the fibres in the telotroch nerve remains unknown. In addition to having different innervation, the two bands also respond differently to cholinergic agonists, which elicit telotroch arrests but have no visible effect on the circumoral band. The oesophagus has a well-developed musculature and an extensive nerve plexus. During feeding, the oesophagus repeatedly contracts, forcing excess water out along two lateral channels prior to swallowing. These channels are also sites of gill slit formation, so there is evidently a continuity between the water bypass mechanism of the larva and that of the postmetamorphic juvenile.  相似文献

During a field study on habituated groups of wild Nilgiri langurs (Presbytis johnii),four cases of group fission were observed which differed markedly from group changes reported in other species of the same genus. All fissions occurred in groups with more than one mature male and roughly coincided with the onset of loud call vocalization by the second mature male group member. As a result of the fission the founder group factions acquired the structure of a onemale group. The filial factions consisted of both mature males and females and occupied, at least temporarily, a part of, or an area adjacent to, the founder group. During fission, the amount of aggressive interactions between the two mature males increased. However, the majority of agonistic interactions involved ritualized threat and intimidation behavior without physical aggression. In at least three cases the two mature males involved in the fission had not joined recently but had lived in these groups for three years or more. Although the presence of all male bands and single males in the two study populations indicate that male replacement by invasive takeovers may occur, it is suggested that in Nilgiri langurs, noninvasive fissions are probably another common mechanism for the foundation and maintenance of bisexual one-male groups.  相似文献

The study troop of chacma baboons (Papio cynocephalus ursinus) at Mkuzi Game Reserve, Zululand, South-Africa, comprised of about 76 members that split into two new troops. The events leading to this troop fission will be described and its possible causes will be discussed. Troop fission among baboons is generally attributed to the withdrawal of low-ranking females from the main group, as a result of the cost of food competition and its effect on their reproductive success. At Mkuzi, no evidence for food competition among females was recorded in terms of rank-related time spent feeding or other time—budget components, feeding-bout length, diet composition or context of female aggression. Moreover, no evidence for rank-related differential reproductive success was found in terms of inter-birth intervals or infant survival. Female mortality was, however, related to dominance rank, with circumstantial evidence suggesting that cause of mortality was predation by leopards. Rate of female disappearances, aggression levels among females, and the percentage of time they spent in proximity to other adult troop members increased after fission. Relatively short inter-birth intervals and extremely low infant mortality rate at Mkuzi resulted in a small number of receptive females at any one time, and therefore in high costs of male sexual competition as expressed in the high levels of male aggression and woundings, both reduced after fission. It is suggested that this troop fission may have been initiated by the resident males, triggered by the high cost of sexual competition, and forced on the females, who were, consequently, subjected to higher risk of predation. The troop fission was preceded by a long process of increasing tendency for sub-trooping. It was initiated by the four resident males who kept a large distance apart from each other, herded oestrous female associates away from others and were followed by other females. The females generally tended to stay close to associates, males and females. These parties were followed by the peripheral and immigrant males who had no female associates, and eventually two distinct daughter troops were formed.  相似文献

Acoel worms in the genus Convolutriloba are remarkable in that closely related, morphologically very similar species reproduce asexually by dramatically different processes. Transverse fission, longitudinal fission, and reversed-polarity budding all occur within this genus, indicating an unparalleled ability to alter the A-P axis. Convolutriloba thus offers an exceptional opportunity to investigate the development and evolution of asexual reproduction. Molecular phylogenetic analysis indicates that reversed-polarity budding is ancestral and fission is derived for the genus. A clear difference between budding and fission is indicated by the development of the nervous system, which forms de novo during budding, but regenerates largely by extensions of remaining components of the nervous system during both types of fission. Despite this and other differences between fission and budding, localized muscle disorganization coupled with behaviorally mediated tearing are characteristic of both transverse fission and reversed-polarity budding (though not longitudinal fission), suggesting that a homologous tissue-separation mechanism underlies these two outwardly quite different asexual reproductive modes. We suggest that the ability to split the posterior axis field into two adjacent fields, manifested during both reversed-polarity budding and longitudinal fission, may have been a driving force behind the diversification of asexual reproductive mode in this group.  相似文献
