In many birds, the middle ears are connected through an air-filled interaural pathway. Sound transmission through this pathway may improve directional hearing. However, attempts to demonstrate such a mechanism have produced conflicting results. One reason is that some species of birds develop a lower static air pressure in the middle ears when anaesthetized, which reduces eardrum vibrations. In anaesthetized budgerigars with vented interaural air spaces and presumed normal eardrum vibrations, we find that sound propagating through the interaural pathway considerably improves cues to the directional hearing. The directional cues in the received sound combined with amplitude gain and time delay of sound propagating through the interaural pathway quantitatively account for the observed dependence of eardrum vibration on direction of sound incidence. Interaural sound propagation is responsible for most of the frontal gradient of eardrum vibration (i.e. when a sound source is moved from a small contralateral angle to the same ipsilateral angle). Our study confirms that at low frequencies the interaural sound propagation may cause vibrations of the eardrum to differ much in time, thus providing a possible cue for directional hearing. The acoustically effective size of the head of our birds (diameter 28 mm) is much larger than expected from the dimensions of the skull, so apparently the feathers on the head have a considerable acoustical effect.Dedicated to Professor Franz Huber on the occasion of his 80th birthday.  相似文献

Since high-resolution radioautography (dipping technique) might be very useful for the study of indole metabolism in the pineal cells, the retention of [3H]-indoles has to be examined during the preparation of specimens for electron microscopy (EM). The pineal organ of the parakeet (Melopsittacus undulatus) was used in the present work. 1) Indole metabolism: following uptake of [3H]-5-hydroxytryptophan ([3H]-HW) in vivo and [3H]-5-hydroxytryptamine ([3H]-HT) in vitro in similar seasonal and nycthemeral conditions--all the known pineal indolic metabolites were recovered by thin layer chromatography. [3H]-5-methoxyindoles were also formed from [3H]-melatonin ([3H]-aMT). 2) The radioactivity of fluids used in the processing of pineal organs in EM was determined by liquid scintillation counting: (a) no exogenous [3H]-indoles could be revealed in EM solutions after [3H]-HW in vivo uptake. (b) 8.8 to 13.4% of [3H]-indoles were washed out by glutaraldehyde after [3H]-HT in vitro uptake. (c) most of the 5-methoxyindoles after in vitro uptake of [3H]-aMT were lost in glutaraldehyde. Our chromatography procedures did not permit the identification of [3H]-indoles extracted by the glutaraldehyde fixative. In previous experiments, [3H]-HW and [3H]-HT uptake showed the presence of selective radioautographic reactions in the cells of the receptor line; however, silver grains were scarce and diffusely distributed in the pineal parenchyma after [3H]-aMT uptake.  相似文献

Males of many animal species are reproductively limited by the difficulty and time costs of finding mates. Males of such species should be selected to take advantage of any cues that might reveal the location of prospective mates. Cues to female location are not restricted to those produced by females, but might also include the highly apparent courtship displays of males that have already found a female. By “eavesdropping” on these courting rivals, initiating sexual displays when courting rivals are detected (i.e., social facilitation of displays); males might effectively exploit the mate-searching efforts of their rivals. We tested the possibility that male Schizocosa ocreata wolf spiders exhibit social facilitation of courtship behaviors using a combination of live behavioral trials and video playback with single stimulus presentations. When exposed to visual cues from another male, male S. ocreata can discern the presence of another individual whether that individual is courting or not. However, we found no evidence of social facilitation of courtship or chemoexploratory behaviors in response to seismic or visual cues presented in isolation or combined. While complex, multimodal, male courtship signals are important in mate choice by female S. ocreata, males do not appear to use these cues to socially facilitate their own courtship.  相似文献

Sarcocysts in cardiac and skeletal muscles of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) were examined transmission electron microscopically 5 to 168 days after experimental infection with Sarcocystis falcatula. The ultrastnicture of the primary cyst wall, amorphous substance, metrocytes and bradyzoites in developing, degenerating and mature sarcocysts is described and compared with precystic merozoites studied previously. Sufficient morphologic differences between precystic rnerozoites, metrocytes and bradyzoites (cystozoites) were found which seem to justify their semantic differentiation. Significant differences in immature and mature primary cyst wall morphology were encountered. If primary cyst wall morphology is to be used in determination and differentiation of species of Sarcocystis , then caution must be used to employ only mature sarcocysts.  相似文献

Forty-four budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) were administered sporocysts of Sarcocystis falcatula orally and were examined at necropsy intervals from less than 12 hr to 168 days. Tissue were examined by touch preparations (of organ cut surfaces), light microscopy, and electron microscopy. Meront and cyst burdens were determined in various organs and correlated with duration of infection, inoculum, and the meront or cyst burdens of other organs. Host inflammatory tissue reactions were quantitated and correlated with meront and cyst burdens. Quantitation of meronts was more accurate in tissue sections than in touch preparations, but quantitation of merozoites was better in touch preparations. More than 97% of meronts were found in capillary, venular, and venous endothelial cells. Cysts were found only in cardiac and skeletal myocytes. Merogony began in the lamina propria of the small intestine less than 12 hr postinoculation (PI). Meronts were in liver and lung by the second day PI and in other organs by 3-7 days PI. Mean meront burdens were highest in lung (33 meronts/mm2), lower in liver and kidney (1-3 meronts/mm2), and infrequent in other organs (less than 0.9 meronts/mm2). Cysts were first seen in cardiac myocytes 7 days PI. They developed through the metrocyte stage and then degenerated, rarely reaching maturity. Cysts were first noted in skeletal muscle at 8 days PI. In leg, upper esophagus, and tongue, cysts matured between 44 and 77 days PI. In pectoral muscles, the majority of cysts degenerated during the late metrocyte and early intermediate stages (28-42 days PI). In addition to a previously reported and often fatal acute interstitial pneumonitis, S. falcatula-infected budgerigars also sustained a chronic active hepatitis, interstitial myocarditis, myositis, nephritis, splenitis, and encephalitis. These lesions weakly correlated with meront burdens in most sites during early infection (up to 50 days PI).  相似文献

The last decade has witnessed extensive, and widespread, changes in scientific technologies that have impacted significantly upon the study of the life sciences. Arguably, the biggest advances in our comprehension of simple and complex biological processes have come as a consequence of obtaining the complete DNA sequence of organisms. It is likely that we will become accustomed to hearing of quantum leaps in the study and understanding of the biology of higher eukaryotes in the coming years, now that (near) complete genome sequences are available for man, mouse and rat. In this review, we will discuss the impact of genome sequence data, and the use of new scientific technologies that have emerged largely as consequence of the availability of this information, on the study of the master regulator of sporulation, Spo0A, in low G+C Gram-positive endospore-forming bacteria.  相似文献

Background

We investigated the seropositive rates and persistence of antibody against pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus (pH1N1) in pregnant women and voluntary blood donors after the second wave of the pandemic in Nanjing, China.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Serum samples of unvaccinated pregnant women (n = 720) and voluntary blood donors (n = 320) were collected after the second wave of 2009 pandemic in Nanjing. All samples were tested against pH1N1 strain (A/California/7/2009) with hemagglutination inhibition assay. A significant decline in seropositive rates, from above 50% to about 20%, was observed in pregnant women and voluntary blood donors fifteen weeks after the second wave of the pandemic. A quarter of the samples were tested against a seasonal H1N1 strain (A/Brisbane/59/2007). The antibody titers against pH1N1 strain were found to correlate positively with those against seasonal H1N1 strain. The correlation was modest but statistically significant.

Conclusions and Significance

The high seropositive rates in both pregnant women and voluntary blood donors suggested that the pH1N1 virus had widely spread in these two populations. Immunity derived from natural infection seemed not to be persistent well.  相似文献

Summary Female Tephritis bardanae (Schrank) exhibit a characteristic ovipositor-dragging behaviour immediately after laying eggs into a flowerbud of Arctium minus (Hill) Bernh. To establish whether this behaviour is associated with an oviposition-deterring pheromone (ODP), female T. bardanae were presented with clean, unattacked flowerbuds and fly activity was monitored using video recording equipment. The distribution of oviposition and fly behaviour were analysed. Avoidance of attacked buds was revealed by the oviposition pattern becoming overdispersed. Spacing out of eggs continued until, on average, each bud contained one egg-batch, after which the distribution became more random or clumped. Analysis of fly behaviour showed that attacked and unattacked buds received similar numbers of visits, but fewer oviposition attempts were made on attacked buds. This behaviour was consistent with use of a contact pheromone deterring repeated oviposition and applied to the bud surface during ovipositor-dragging. Avoidance of attacked buds should increase the efficiency of resource use by T. bardanae populations in the field; however, distributions of egg-batches in flowerhead samples collected from Monks Wood NNR, Cambridgeshire, during 1983–1985, were highly clumped and did not provide supportive evidence. This suggests that the effectiveness of oviposition deterrence in the field is reduced, because the active life of ODP under natural conditions is short, and/or because wild females frequently experience high oviposition drive due to scarcity of suitable flowerbuds.  相似文献

Although Cyperaceae are considered anemophilous, some species exhibit features that are attractive to pollinators, such as the white UV‐reflecting involucral bracts of Rhynchospora ciliata. But how effective are these conspicuous adaptations? To address this question, we tested the hypothesis that species such as R. ciliata are visited by greater numbers of pollinating insects than similar species with green involucral bracts, such as R. pubera. We compared the floral biology of both species and the number of visits to sympatric populations of each species, associating them with the availability of pollen and the pollination system. We verified that species with white involucral bracts are preferred, because there were more visits to R. ciliata in the first 2 h the flowers were open. The peak visitation in R. pubera was 2 h after the flowers opened, when the pollen of R. ciliata was exhausted. Although the involucral bracts of R. pubera are green, the spikelet scales and anthers are white and reflect ultraviolet light. Overall, flowers of R. pubera exhibit fewer white or reflective surfaces and are probably less conspicuous to a bee than those of R. ciliata. It is possible that R. pubera is a second option for visitors after the first 2 h of anthesis. The two different peaks in visitation minimize interspecific competition for pollinators, suggesting that R. ciliata and R. pubera together could attract more generalist pollinators and, instead of competing, facilitate the pollination of both species. Although R. pubera is autogamous and self‐compatible, both wind and insects are important to its reproductive success.  相似文献

Accumulation of misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) causes ER stress and activates inositol-requiring protein-1 (IRE1), among other ER-associated signaling proteins of the unfolded protein response (UPR) in mammalian cells. IRE1 signaling becomes attenuated under prolonged ER stress. The mechanisms by which this occurs are not well understood. An ER resident protein, Bax inhibitor-1 (BI-1), interacts with IRE1 and directly inhibits IRE1 activity. However, little is known about regulation of the BI-1 protein. We show here that bifunctional apoptosis regulator (BAR) functions as an ER-associated RING-type E3 ligase, interacts with BI-1, and promotes proteasomal degradation of BI-1. Overexpression of BAR reduced BI-1 protein levels in a RING-dependent manner. Conversely, knockdown of endogenous BAR increased BI-1 protein levels and enhanced inhibition of IRE1 signaling during ER stress. We also found that the levels of endogenous BAR were reduced under prolonged ER stress. Our findings suggest that post-translational regulation of the BI-1 protein by E3 ligase BAR contributes to the dynamic control of IRE1 signaling during ER stress.  相似文献

To explore the roles of biogenic amines in reproduction in workers in primitively eusocial societies, correlations between brain levels of biogenic amines and ovarian development or oviposition in workers of the paper wasp Polistes chinensis were investigated. Several workers in queenright colonies developed ovaries and were potential egg-layers. Maximum ovarian width was significantly correlated with brain levels of dopamine, serotonin and their metabolites (N-acetyldopamine and N-acetylserotonin). Individuals with developed ovaries proceeded with yolk formation had significantly higher levels of brain dopamine, serotonin and N-acetyldopamine compared with individuals with undeveloped ovaries. Brain dopamine levels were higher in egg-laying individuals than in other individuals with developed ovaries. Thus, the workers of the paper wasp showed quantitative differences in brain dopamine levels correlated with reproduction. These results suggest that the brain levels of biogenic amines in paper wasp workers correspond to their tasks, and that there is a mechanism for promoting reproduction by dopamine, as previously reported in the workers of eusocial bees.  相似文献

As part of their social sound repertoire, migrating humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) perform a large variety of surface‐active behaviors, such as breaching and repetitive slapping of the pectoral fins and tail flukes; however, little is known about what factors influence these behaviors and what their functions might be. We investigated the potential functions of surface‐active behaviors in humpback whale groups by examining the social and environmental contexts in which they occurred. Focal observations on 94 different groups of whales were collected in conjunction with continuous acoustic monitoring, and data on the social and environmental context of each group. We propose that breaching may play a role in communication between distant groups as the probability of observing this behavior decreased significantly when the nearest whale group was within 4,000 m compared to beyond 4,000 m. Involvement in group interactions, such as the splitting of a group or a group joining with other whales, was an important factor in predicting the occurrence of pectoral, fluke, and peduncle slapping, and we suggest that they play a role in close‐range or within‐group communication. This study highlights the potentially important and diverse roles of surface‐active behaviors in the communication of migrating humpback whales.  相似文献

Among avian species that communicate using vocalization, songbirds (oscine Passeriformes), hummingbirds (Trochiliformes), and parrots (Psittaciformes) are vocal learners. Early studies showed that songbirds require auditory feedback for song development in young and maintenance in adults. To determine whether auditory feedback is also necessary for adult song maintenance in non-passerine species, we deprived adult male budgerigars (Psittaciformes) of auditory input by surgical cochlear removal. Songs of the deafened birds changed within 6 months after auditory deprivation. In postoperative songs, high narrowband syllables, which comprised frequency-modulated narrowband elements with relatively high fundamental frequencies of 2–4 kHz, decreased significantly. High harmonic broadband syllables, with fundamental frequencies ≥2 kHz, also decreased. The altered proportions of syllables were subsequently retained, and maintained 12 months after deafening. The sequence linearity score, a parameter representing the stereotypy of the syllable sequence, was higher than that before deafening. The inter-syllable silence was prolonged. Little change was observed in the songs of intact and sham-operated birds. The significant decrease in high-frequency syllables and song alteration followed by stabilization resembled the results with songbirds, although song stabilization took a long time in budgerigars. Therefore, our results suggest that psittacine budgerigars and oscine songbirds require auditory feedback similarly for adult song maintenance.  相似文献

Cellular responses to DNA damage require the formation of protein complexes in a highly organized fashion. The complete molecular components that participate in the sequential signaling response to DNA damage remain unknown. Here we demonstrate that vaccinia-related kinase 1 (VRK1) in resting cells plays an important role in the formation of ionizing radiation-induced foci that assemble on the 53BP1 scaffold protein during the DNA damage response. The kinase VRK1 is activated by DNA double strand breaks induced by ionizing radiation (IR) and specifically phosphorylates 53BP1 in serum-starved cells. VRK1 knockdown resulted in the defective formation of 53BP1 foci in response to IR both in number and size. This observed effect on 53BP1 foci is p53- and ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM)-independent and can be rescued with VRK1 mutants resistant to siRNA. VRK1 knockdown also prevented the activating phosphorylation of ATM, CHK2, and DNA-dependent protein kinase in response to IR. VRK1 activation in response to DNA damage is a novel and early step in the signaling of mammalian DNA damage responses.  相似文献

Summary Host finding by the entomophagous parasite,Venturia canescens (Grav.), parasitizingAnagasta kühniella (Zeller) was studied. Studies utilizing fixed densities and dispersion patterns of the hosts where no choice of density groupings was offered showed that within the experimental conditions used, host density relationships were more important than dispersion. Decreasing the time hosts were exposed to a parasite from 72 hours to 24 hours did not alter the overall parasitization. In both cases progressively less hosts were parasitized as host density increased, which exemplified aHolling-type of response. However, when host densities were varied within the same universe, independent of dispersion patterns, and the parasites were given a “choice” of host densities to attack, an increasing percentage of hosts in the higher host density groups were parasitized; thus a density-dependent behavioral response was exhibited. These studies were conducted as a partial fulfillment in the Ph. D. program of one of us (B. M. Matsumoto) and form a part of a broad investigation into the processes operating in the dynamics of arthropod populations under grants toC. B. Huffaker from the U. S. Myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) is an adaptor protein that transduces intracellular signaling pathways evoked by the Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and interleukin-1 receptors (IL-1Rs). MyD88 is composed of an N-terminal death domain (DD) and a C-terminal Toll/IL-1 receptor (TIR) domain, separated by a short region. Upon ligand binding, TLR/IL-1Rs hetero- or homodimerize and recruit MyD88 through their respective TIR domains. Then, MyD88 oligomerizes via its DD and TIR domain and interacts with the interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinases (IRAKs) to form the Myddosome complex. We performed site-directed mutagenesis of conserved residues that are located in exposed regions of the MyD88-TIR domain and analyzed the effect of the mutations on MyD88 signaling. Our studies revealed that mutation of Glu183, Ser244, and Arg288 impaired homodimerization of the MyD88-TIR domain, recruitment of IRAKs, and activation of NF-κB. Moreover, overexpression of two green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged MyD88 mini-proteins (GFP-MyD88151–189 and GFP-MyD88168–189), comprising the Glu183 residue, recapitulated these effects. Importantly, expression of these dominant negative MyD88 mini-proteins competed with the function of endogenous MyD88 and interfered with TLR2/4-mediated responses in a human monocytic cell line (THP-1) and in human primary monocyte-derived dendritic cells. Thus, our studies identify novel residues of the TIR domain that are crucially involved in MyD88 homodimerization and TLR signaling in immune cells.  相似文献
