Editorial

As Protist enters its seventh year of publication, we can again look back to a successful year of publishing the most exciting research on our favourate organisms, the protists. Submissions, published printed pages and the impact factor (IF 2002: 2.617; ISI, Philadelphia) are all up from last year and have reached the highest levels since Protist began operation in 1998. To me this shows that research on protists in the twenty-first century is well alive and thriving, and it gives me the opportunity to thank all those involved in the production of a quality journal, namely the Editorial Board, Editorial Office, publisher's staff, expert reviewers, and last but not least all authors, who submit their best work to our journal. In particular, I wish to thank Donald M. Anderson and Egbert Tannich who have resigned from the Editorial Board after four and six years, respectively, of dedicated service to the journal, and I welcome C. Graham Clark and Karen A. Steidinger as new members on the Editorial Board.

Protist 2000

As Protist enters the year 2000, the third year of its existence, it may be appropriate to briefly evaluate the past and look forward to what readers and authors of the journal can expect in the near future.It is fair to say that editing the journal over the past two years has been an enlightening experience, more work but also more fun than I anticipated. Whatever has been achieved, it would not have been possible without the tremendous support I received from my co-editors, the publisher and his staff and my secretarial office. Of no less importance has been the constructive criticism of fellow protistologists, readers and authors alike.I wish to thank Paul Falkowski, Rick A Firtel, and Frances D Gillin who have resigned from the Editorial Board for all their help in getting the journal started, and I welcome Randall S Alberte, Donald M Anderson, Richard Kessin and Peter Upcroft as new Board members.Protist has rapidly become one of the premium international journals for protist research, its impact factor, to be issued later this year will testify to this. The journal is covered by MEDLINE and a full text (PDF) online version is now available free of charge through the year 2000 on the publisher's Web site (http://www.urbanfischer.de/journals/protist).Protist will continue to publish high quality original work in all areas of protist research using the highest quality reproduction methods available today. In addition the highly successful “Protist News” and “From the Archives” sections for which authors are usually invited, will remain regular features of the journal.Protist in the year 2000 opens a new chapter of protist research. I invite you to join in this as a reader and a contributor.     

Potential Conflicts of Interest of Editorial Board Members from Five Leading Spine Journals

Conflicts of interest arising from ties between pharmaceutical industry and physicians are common and may bias research. The extent to which these ties exist among editorial board members of medical journals is not known. This study aims to determine the prevalence and financial magnitude of potential conflicts of interest among editorial board members of five leading spine journals. The editorial boards of: The Spine Journal; Spine; European Spine Journal; Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine; and Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques were extracted on January 2013 from the journals’ websites. Disclosure statements were retrieved from the 2013 disclosure index of the North American Spine Society; the program of the 20th International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques; the program of the 48th Annual Meeting of the Scoliosis Research Society; the program of the AOSpine global spine congress; the presentations of the 2013 Annual Eurospine meeting; and the disclosure index of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Names of the editorial board members were compared with the individuals who completed a disclosure for one of these indexes. Disclosures were extracted when full names matched. Two hundred and ten (29%) of the 716 identified editorial board members reported a potential conflict of interest and 154 (22%) reported nothing to disclose. The remaining 352 (49%) editorial board members had no disclosure statement listed for one of the indexes. Eighty-nine (42%) of the 210 editorial board members with a potential conflict of interest reported a financial relationship of more than $10,000 during the prior year. This finding confirms that potential conflicts of interest exist in editorial boards which might influence the peer review process and can result in bias. Academia and medical journals in particular should be aware of this and strive to improve transparency of the review process. We emphasize recommendations that contribute to achieving this goal.

New short communications section: call for papers

Communications from the Mammal Society , which have been published twice yearly, in June (see pp. 209–244, this issue) and December, will cease from the end of this year. From January 1999, this Section of the Journal of Zoology will be allocated to Short Communications , and contributions will be welcomed on all taxa within the general field of zoological research, both invertebrate and vertebrate. The Most Outstanding Research of the Past Year

Cell Cycle acknowledges the most outstanding cell cycle research of the past year and presents the list of the top ten papers, published in all journals between 2002 and mid 2003. Papers were put forward by and final selections were made by members of the Cell Cycle Editorial Board. More than 40 papers were recommended. Criteria for selection were: the paper will affect future basic research or research in therapy or describes a new technology. This article introduces the authors, who describe the essence of their work.

Senior Managing Editor, Journal of Integrative Plant Biology Journal of Integrative Plant Biology (JIPB) is a monthly plant biological journal that reports scientific discoveries by using integrative genetic, chemical, cell and molecular biological approaches. As one of Wiley-Blackwell's leadingjournals, JIPB is available in over 7,800 libraries worldwide and indexed by 45 databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, SCI, CA, BA and BIOSIS (www.jipb.net). We are looking for a Senior Managing Editor to be fully in-charge of the Editorial Office, to work under the supervision of the chief editor and the board members to promote the journal in the plant science community, to bridge the communication between the editorial board, the reviewers, the authors and the publisher. The ideal candidate should be creative in increasing the journal’s visibility through organizing special issues, setting up a user-friendly public access system, and ensuring an efficient publication cycle. The annual salary range will be 100,000 RMB to 180,000 RMB, depending on the qualification. This position opens opens for application from 1 September, 2009, till the position is filled. Qualifications: 1. PhD degree in plant molecular biology-related area; 2. What is the purpose of launching World Journal of Biological Chemistry?

The first issue of World Journal of Biological Chemistry (WJBC), whose preparatory work was initiated on July 01, 2009, will be published on January 26, 2010. The WJBC Editorial Board has now been established and consists of 341 distinguished experts from 37 countries. Our purpose of launching WJBC is to publish peer-reviewed, high-quality articles via an open-access online publishing model, thereby acting as a platform for communication between peers and the wider public, and maximizing the benefits to editorial board members, authors and readers.

The first issue of World Journal of Stem Cells (WJSC), whose preparatory work was initiated on September 27, 2008, will be published on December 31, 2009. The WJSC Editorial Board has now been established and consists of 281 distinguished experts from 28 countries. Our purpose of launching WJSC is to publish peer-reviewed, high-quality articles via an open-access online publishing model, thereby acting as a platform for communication between peers and the wider public, and maximizing the benefits to editorial board members, authors and readers.     

Biophysical Reviews: 2020—looking back,going forward

After first describing the issue contents (Biophysical Reviews—Volume 12 Issue 6), this Editorial goes on to provide a short round-up of the activities of the journal in 2020. Directly following this Editorial are two obituaries marking the recent deaths of Prof. Fumio Oosawa (Japan) and Dr. Herbert Tabor (USA)—two major figures in Biophysical/Biochemical science from the last 100 years.

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 has been a testing year for all. Filled with a myriad combination of personal tragedies and work/life inconveniences, circumstances have required many difficult decisions to be made at the personal, family, organizational and society levels with the results of these difficult choices amplifying the general level of stress within communities. Scientists have certainly not been immune from such pressures. For working scientists, this year has presented a number of challenges. Those scientists heavily involved in teaching have had to engage with remote teaching methodologies and the necessarily rapid preparation of additional online teaching materials. Research-focused scientists have had to cope with the closing or restriction of work facilities and the loss of personnel, which has certainly impacted (and often disrupted) scientific progress. For the many itinerant working scientists living away from home and family, the restrictions on worldwide travel have caused additional dilemmas and necessitated difficult career decisions. Student scientists have had to deal with other problems. Oftentimes educational institutions have maintained the steep fee requirements associated with enrolment despite the year being a virtual write-off in terms of focusing on academic performance. Overseas students have also faced problems related to maintaining interdependent attendance and residence requirements.Irrespective of the stage of their career progression, scientists (like all members of society) have tried their best to make the most of a bad situation. In 2020, the Biophysical Reviews’ Editorial Board and the specifically dedicated professional officers from Springer-Nature have similarly pushed on with our journal related duties. From 2018, Biophysical Reviews moved to a six Issue per year format. The current Issue (Issue 6) is the last for 2020, and as such, the first duty of this Editorial is to describe the contents of the twelve articles appearing within it. After providing a precis of these articles, we then move on to describe some of the highlights of this year and finish by welcoming some new members to the Editorial Board.
