Field observations on Anabaena circinalis Rabenhorst over six summer seasonal appearances in two dams have shown that the frequency of occurence of heterocysts became fairly constant soon after the appearance of the species and decreased just before the end of the growing season. By contrast, akinete frequency reached a maximum, very early in the season, then decreased rapidly. Drought led to a decrease in occurrence of both Anabaena and of akinetes in several dams; this was possibly associated with an increasing concentration of NOx in the water. At Carcoar dam this akinete reduction was shown first in end-of-season figures. Drought also led to an end-of-season decrease there in the occurrence of heterocysts. Variations in morphology were noted. The coiling of the trichome, shape of akinete and relative position of heterocyst were all variable, although these characters are often assumed to be of taxonomic importance.  相似文献

The psaI gene encoding the 5.2 kDa protein component (PsaI) of the photosystem I complex was cloned from the cyanobacterium Anabaena 29413. The gene is present in single copy in this cyanobacterial genome. The nucleotide sequence of a 500 bp region of the cloned DNA revealed the presence of an open reading frame encoding a 46 amino acid long polypeptide. The N-terminal 11 residues are absent in the mature polypeptide and thus represents the first identified cleavable presequence on the PsaI protein. We suggest that this presequence directs the N-terminus of the protein to the thylakoid lumen.  相似文献

Hydrogen production rates by Anabaena sp. strain TU37-1 obtained after an initial 1-day incubation period were approximately 70 to 80 and 3 to 9 µmol (mg chl)–1 h–1 under argon and nitrogen atmospheres, respectively. Hydrogen production under argon was not enhanced by addition of carbon dioxide, but was enhanced to some extent under nitrogen by increasing the initial carbon dioxide concentration. Rates of hydrogen and oxygen production during the initial 7-hour period were 15 and 220 µmol (mg chl)–1 h–1, respectively, in vessels with 18.5% initial carbon dioxide. Hydrogen production under nitrogen was enhanced by addition of carbon monoxide (1%). The rate obtained from the initial 1-day incubation period was about 40 µmol (mg chl)–1 h–1, which corresponded to about 60% of that under argon. On the basis of these observations, a possible strategy for hydrogen production by nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria under nitrogen in the presence of carbon monoxide is indicated.  相似文献

Hypecoum sect.Hypecoum comprises 8 species, one with 2 additional subspecies, in the Mediterranean area and the Middle East. Five of these are recognized for the first time, viz.Hypecoum procumbens L. subsp.fragrantissimum Å. E. Dahl,H. procumbens L. subsp.atropunctatum Å. E. Dahl,H. trullatum Å. E. Dahl,H. angustilobum Å. E. Dahl andH. torulosum Å. E. Dahl. H. dimidiatum Delile andH. pseudograndiflorum Petr., which have generally been included inH. imberbe Sm., are reestablished as distinct species. Morphology and variation patterns are described and discussed with special reference to mating systems. Self-incompatibility is dominating butH. procumbens subsp.procumbens andH. torulosum are self-compatible. The broad variation ranges of the former taxon in traits presumably related to mating system (petal, anther and stigma sizes as well as pollenovule ratios) indicate varying rates of outcrossing. SEM micrographs are given of petal and stigma surfaces and of pollen grains. Chromosome counts are presented for seven taxa. All are diploid with 2n = 16.  相似文献

The Biodegradation capabilities of six selected cyanobacterial species for fluometuron, a phenylurea herbicide, as well as its inhibitory effect on chlorophyll a content were investigated. The selected species (three strains of Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena cylindrica, A. flos-aquae and A. spiroides) were subjected to three elevated concentrations of fluometuron (0.14, 0.7 and 1.4 mg/ml) for different exposure times (1–5 days). Results revealed that biodegradation of fluometuron is species-dependent and positively correlated with the exposure time, reaching maximum efficiency after 5 days at all the investigated concentrations. All the species tested showed generally great ability to degrade the compound even at the highest concentration with specific variations among them. Biodegradation efficiencies of fluometuron by the selected species were in the following ranges; 39.2–99.9; 87.5–100; and 93.2–100 at 0.14; 0.7 and 1.4 mg fluometuron/ml respectively. It was noticed that the gradual increase in the pesticide concentration enhances its biodegradability by the selected algal species. Variations according to species as well as exposure time were discussed. The highest fluometuron concentration (1.4 mg/l) showed the highest inhibition of chlorophyll a content in the tested species and toxicity was also species- and time-dependent.  相似文献

Cultures of the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis PCC 6309 were grown under several iron concentrations, and changes in growth rates and chlorophyll and phycocyanin concentrations were determined. The total amount of ferredoxin present in the cells was found to be dependent on the concentration of iron in the media, as was the pattern distribution of the two different forms of the iron-sulfur protein described in this organism. Flavodoxin was not found to be present in these cells even when they were grown in the absence of added iron, indicating that this flavoprotein does not replace ferredoxin in this particular strain.  相似文献

The taxonomy of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae strain NH-5, a producer of cyanotoxins, was re-evaluated by comparison with six other Aphanizomenon strains using morphological characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequences. Strain NH-5 was concluded to be improperly identified as Aph. flos-aquae based upon (1) lack of bundle formation in the trichomes, (2) location of akinetes next to heterocytes, (3) lower similarities (less than 97.5%) in the 16S rRNA gene sequences relative to Aph. flos-aquae strains, and (4) comparison within a phylogenetic tree constructed from 16S rRNA gene sequences. The Aphanizomenon strains investigated in this study are classified to four morphological groups as described by the classical taxonomy of Komárek & Kovácik (1989). This classification was supported from the phylogenetic results of 16S rRNA gene sequences. This study also discusses the generic boundaries between Aphanizomenon and Anabaena.  相似文献

Komárek has recently reviewed the various species assigned to the green algal genusNeochloris Starr (Chlorococcales, Chlorococcaceae) and removed those with uninucleate vegetative cells to a new genus,Ettlia. Watanabe & Floyd, unaware ofKomárek's work, also reviewed the species ofNeochloris and distributed them among three genera—Neochloris, Chlorococcopsis gen. nov., andParietochloris gen. nov.—on the basis of details of the covering of the zoospore and the arrangement of the basal bodies of the flagellar apparatus. This paper reconciles these two treatments and makes additional recommendations at the ranks of genus, family, order, and class.  相似文献

Anabaena azollae, a presumptive isolate from Azolla filiculoides, was immobilized in polyurethane foam, hydrophilic polyvinyl foam and alginate. When viewed by low-temperature scanning electron microscopy a thick mucilage layer covered the surface of both cells and matrix; this closely resembles the mode of attachment of the symbiont Anabaena in the Azolla leaf cavity. The heterocyst frequency of the immobilized A. azollae doubled relative to free-living cells and reached a level of 14–17%. Immobilization induced increases in both hydrogen production via nitrogenase or hydrogenase and in the rates and stabilization of acetylene reduction (N2-fixation). Ammonia production by immobilized cells with L-methionine-D,L-sulfoximine (MSX) is greater than that of freeliving cells. The genes for ferredoxin from heterocysts (fdx H) and vegetative cells (pet F) of Anabaena sp. strain 7120 were subcloned into plasmid pUC 18/19. Both genes were expressed in Escherichia coli at high levels (10% of total protein). Pet F could be expressed from its own promoter. The ferredoxins were correctly assembled to the holoprotein. Heterocyst ferredoxin was purified from E. coli extracts on a large scale. Its biochemical and biophysical properties were identical to those of the authentic ferredoxin, isolated from Anabaena heterocysts.This paper is dedicated to Prof. A. Isolated heterocysts of Anabaena 7120 evolve H2 in an ATP-dependent nitrogenase-catalyzed process that is inhibited by N2 and C2H2. Heterocysts have an active uptake hydrogenase that only requires an electron acceptor of positive redox potential, e.g., methylene blue, dichlorophenolindophenol or potassium ferricyanide. O2 supplied at low partial pressures is a very effective physiological oxidant for H2 uptake. High concentrations of O2 are inhibitory to H2 uptake. The oxyhydrogen reaction in heterocysts appears to be mediated by a cytochrome-cytochrome oxidase system, and it supports ATP synthesis via oxidative phosphorylation. Attempts to demonstrate acetylene reduction in isolated heterocysts employing H2 as an electron donor were unsuccessful. It is suggested that the uptake hydrogenase functions to conserve reductant that otherwise would be dissipated via nitrogenase-catalyzed H2 evolution.  相似文献

该研究在形态学观察以及统计学分析的基础上,深入研究了山矾科中原氏山矾复合体的叶片形态学结构。结果表明:叶片质地在整个复合体中可分为革质、纸质2种类型,叶片大小变异幅度较大,除中原氏山矾(Symplocos kawakamii)、棱角山矾(S.tetragona)、蒙自山矾(S.henryi)均与其他种差异显著外,其余种均属于连续过度,叶片分形可以初步区分该复合体植物。该研究结果为中原氏山矾复合体的进一步研究提供了依据,对复合体的分类处理具有一定的分类学意义。  相似文献

Electronmicroscopical investigations of light activated akinetes in different phases before outgrowth of the germinating cell showed two alterations in the akinete envelope, obviously in connection with the germination process. After induction of germination the akinetes show formation of an expanding more or less electron dense layer between the outer cell wall layer (outer membrane, LIV) and the condensed part of the akinete coat (the transformed sheath of the vegetative cell). Between this new formed layer and the mentioned part of the akinete coat thick laminar layers are deposited which contain alternately electron dense and electron transparent strata. The expanding layer is assumed to be a mucous layer which acts as swelling body causing, after bursting of the layered shell, the expulsion of the germinating cell in the manner characteristic for Anabaena variabilis.  相似文献

The genus Procerodes forms a heterogeneous assemblage of taxa. Although it is premature to attempt phylogenetic weighting of the characters, the genus contains three well delimited subgroups, one with a subantarctic, panaustral distribution, one world-wide in distribution, and one occurring principally in the northern hemisphere. Outside of these subgroups, species in this genus are problematic since a number of their features also occurs in other procerodids. All recognized groups exhibit a wide distributional range. Many of the world-wide taxonomic relations lie on the species level and some at the level of genera. Poor dispersal capacity of extant species of Procerodes suggests that the biogeographic patterns may be very old.  相似文献

Two stigma forms occur inChamaecrista andSenna, but only one inCassia. In the common chambered form, a stigma pore is positioned on the reflexed style tip and is the entrance to a tapering chamber. The pore rim is fringed by hairs which vary in number, size, distribution and shape. In the alternative form the stigma is situated at the apex of the curved style and is crateriform. The crater rim is fringed by hairs of variable number and shape. The stigmatic hairs are predominantly unicellular and cutinized. Stigma and hair differences aid in the taxonomy of the genera. Heterocyst development in ammonia-grown cultures of Anabaena variabilis and Anabaena 7120 was fully induced by the amino-acid analog methionine sulfoximine (MSO) at concentrations of 0.5–1.0 M. Glutamine, glutamate, aspartate, and alanine at 0.5 mM blocked the induction of heterocysts by MSO in A. variabilis. With Anabaena 7120, glutamine and glutamate were fully effective and alanine partially effective in preventing MSO-induced heterocyst formation. In MSO-treated algae, glutamine synthetase activity was reduced to less than 15% of control values within 4–6 h. Inactivation of the enzyme was prevented by all four amino acids tested.  相似文献

A set of 24 strains belonging to the genus Anabaena (Phylum Cyanobacteria), isolated from diverse geographic locations in India, were evaluated along with three International type strains of Anabaena (ATCC 29414, ATCC 29208 and ATCC 27899) for their morphological, physiological and biochemical diversity. The morphological dataset, consisting of 58 variants for 15 characters, and SDS-PAGE protein profiles comprising 17 polymorphic bands were utilized to differentiate the selected Anabaena strains and explore the patterns of diversity through cluster analysis. Physiological and biochemical characterization with respect to nitrogen fixation and accumulation of chlorophyll and phycobiliproteins led to the identification of some highly promising Anabaena strains for use as biofertilizers and source of pigments. The study highlighted the tremendous inter and intraspecific diversity within the Anabaena isolates and indicated the potential as well as constraints of the morphological and protein profiling datasets for unambiguous differentiation and analyses of diversity among the Anabaena strains.  相似文献

Seven strains of aerobic carbon monoxide-oxidizing bacteria (carboxydebacteria) when growing on CO as sole source of carbon and energy had doubling times which ranged from 12–42 h. The activity profiles obtained after discontinuous sucrose density gradient centrifugation indicated that the CO-oxidizing enzymes are soluble and the hydrogenases are membrane-bound in all strains examined. The CO-oxidizing enzymes of Pseudomonas carboxydohydrogena, Pseudomonas carboxydoflava, Comamonas compransoris, and the so far unidentified strains OM2, OM3, and OM4 had a molecular weight of 230,000; that of Achromobacter carboxydus amounted to 170,000. The molecular weights of the CO-oxidizing and H2-oxidizing enzymes turned out to be identical. The cell sonicates were shown to catalyze the oxidation of both CO and H2 with methylene blue, thionine, phenazine methosulfate, toluylene blue, dichlorophenolindophenol, cytochrome c or ferricyanide as electron acceptors. Methyl viologen, benzyl viologen, FAD+, FMN+, and NAD(P)+ were not reduced. The spectrum of electron acceptors was identical for all strains tested. Neither free formate, hydrogen nor oxygen gas were involved in the CO-oxidation reaction. Methylene blue was reduced by CO at a 1:1 molar ratio. The results indicate that CO-oxidation by carboxydobacteria is catalyzed by identical or similar enzymes and that the reaction obeys the equation CO+H2OCO2+2H++2e- as previously shown for Pseudomonas carboxydovorans.Dedicated to Otto Kandler remembering almost three decades of enjoyable cooperation  相似文献
