Eighteen species of the genus Oncaea, four of them polymorphic,have been collected from the inshore and offshore waters ofthe Lebanon. Three species are new additions to the Mediterraneanfaunal list, O.shmelevi, O.pumilis and O.rufa. The males ofthree poorly described species, O.bathyalis, O.ovalis and O.similis,the female of O.shmelevi and both sexes of O.tenella are redescribed.Oncaea media and O.mediterranea were the two most common representativesof the genus in the study area. Oncaea were most abundant inDecember and January and between March and May; they were mainlymesopelagic and oceanic. Many of the species recorded here havecosmopolitan distributions; some of the smaller ones are lesswell-known, but may prove in time to be as widespread as thelarger taxa.  相似文献

Preexisting receiver biases have been shown to affect how femalesdetect and respond to new conspecific traits in a mate choicecontext. Although preexisting biases have often been discussedin the context of female mate choice, these biases need notbe sex limited. In the genus Xiphophorus, swordtail males possessa sexually selected trait, the sword. Here I consider evidencethat the state of a bias favoring sworded conspecifics maybe generally shared by the sexes in taxa in which the sword has not arisen. In three unsworded species of poeciliid fishes,both males and females prefer members of the other sex withswords. In a fourth species, males and females share the absenceof a response to a sword. This congruity between the sexessuggests that response biases may not be sex limited and thatthe sexes could historically share common mechanisms producingshared mating responses. Alternatively, selection may tendto result in parallel changes in biases in the sexes. Thiswork expands our understanding of receiver biases by usinga phylogenetic approach to examine whether biases are historicallyshared by the sexes and suggests that there can be general congruence between the sexes in such biases.  相似文献

The reproductive and developmental biology of the sessile gastropodVermicularia spirata (Philippi, 1836), collected from the FloridaKeys, was studied from living and preserved material. Individualsof this species attach themselves to a variety of substrata,but were mainly found embedded in the white sponge Geodia gibberosa.Pallial reproductive structures of both sexes of V. spiratawere found greatly to resemble those of Turritella communis,a free-living member of the same family. In both species, animalsof both sexes have open pallial ducts formed by two wide, recurvedlaminae. In the female of V. spirata, the laminae of the pallialoviduct serve as a capsule gland; a pair of side pockets representa fertilization pouch (possibly doubling as a copulatory bursa)and a seminal receptacle. The functional significance of theextensive, open, pallial sperm duct is not yet clear. Vermiculariaspirata is a protandrous hermaphrodite, and small males arefree-living; they become attached at about the time they undergosex reversal. Fertilization is probably brought about by malescrawling close to the apertures of the large, sessile femalesbefore releasing sperm. Egg capsules are brooded in the females'mantle cavities. Ova of about 300 µm diameter give riseto large (about 600 µm long) swimming-crawling veligerlarvae with shells of two and a half whorls. The veligers arecapable of metamorphosis at the time of hatching, but siblingsfrom one brood metamorphosed over a two-week period in the laboratory.Juvenile snails grew rapidly by filtering phytoplankton addedto their culture water. The life history of V. spirata is welladapted to assure fertilization and recruitment in a speciesotherwise committed to a sessile, filter-feeding existence. Seasonal dry weights of female and male Cyclops bicuspidatusthomasi, Diaptomus ashlandi and Diaptomus minutus were studiedin southeastern Lake Michigan during 1975–1981. Smallestanimals occurred during summer and early fall, and largest animalsin winter and spring, a pattern reported for other copepods.The range of weights for the species and sexes decreased fromwinter to summer, and converged in summer to a value of approximately2 µg/animal. Surface water temperature and abundancesof young-of-the-year (YOY) fish were inversely correlated withweights of males and females of the three copepod species. Standingstocks of important phytoplankton groups, especially pennatediatoms and flagellates, were positively correlated with copepodweight. Seasonal change of copepod body size appears to be morethan simply a function of temperature; seasonal predation byYOY fish may be a factor influencing sizes of adult copepods.  相似文献

Razorbills (Alca Undo) engaged in extrapair copulations (EPCs)during two phases of their breeding cycle when fertilizationof eggs was not possible, suggesting that EPCs provide nongeneticbenefits. Females actively pursued extrapair mountings afterthey completed egg laying, the first monogamous species reportedto do so. Mountings were performed in mating arenas outsideof the breeding colony, where attendance by postlaying femalesindicated that they sought encounters with extrapair males whiletheir mates were incubating. Postlaying females always successfullyresisted insemination yet positioned themselves to receive mountings.These findings support the hypothesis that resistance to inseminationis a ploy used by females to appraise males. At the end of thebreeding cycle, when males escorted the fledgling to sea, femalesremained at the colony where they consorted and sometimes copulatedwith other males. Nonfertilizable extrapair copulations mayserve two social functions for razorbills: female appraisalof males for future fertilizable EPCs and the appraisal andacquisition of new mates by both sexes.  相似文献

Cucurbita pepo carries male and female flowers on the same plant,and is pollinated by nectar-collecting bees. The nectaries aredimorphic in the two sexes and pollen is loaded and unloadedas the bees gain access to the nectar. Both types of flowerare open for only 6 h (from 0600 h to 1200 h); male flowersopen and close half an hour earlier than female flowers. Thelatter produce more nectar and are visited more often by thebees than the male flowers. Pollen viability determined by fluoresceindiacetate (fluorochromatic reaction) decreases by 20% duringanthesis and more rapidly after the flower closes. This decreaseis due to dehydration of the grain, especially around the porewhere the intine is exposed. An unusual feature of this speciesis that the grains do not dehydrate before anther dehiscence.Female receptivity has two aspects, that of the stigma lasting4 d, and that of the ovules lasting 2 d. The differences in potential reproductive rate between the sexescan be used to predict the operational sex ratio and the patternsand intensity of mating competition and hence sexual selectionin a population. This article describes how one environmentalcomponent, temperature, affects potential reproductive ratesof the two sexes in the paternally brooding, sex-role reversedpipefish (Syngnathus typhle). Males brooded embryos much longer(on average 58 days) in cold water (about 10°C) than inwarmer water (35 days at about 15°C). As a consequence,the potential reproductive rate (number of eggs brooded perday) of males was significantly higher in warm water. In females,however, potential reproductive rate, i.e., number of eggs producedper day given an unlimited access to mates, was not significantlydifferent between temperatures. In both sexes, potential reproductiverate was positively related to body size. At both temperatures,females had the potential to reproduce faster than males. Asa result, the operational sex ratio will become female biasedand sex-roles reversed, as is the case in this species. Sincetemperature differently influenced the potential reproductiverates of males and females, with the sexual difference largerat lower temperatures, more intense female-female competitionis predicted at low temperatures.  相似文献

Changes in gonadal histology were used to determine the reproductivecycles of three trochid gastropods commonly found along theTranskei coast. They were dioecious, the sexes being evenlydistributed both in terms of numbers and size. Despite someasynchrony, Monodonta australis had a distinct reproductivecycle with a short inactive period during the winter, gonadaldevelopment coincided with increasing sea temperatures and spawningtook place from late summer to autumn. Both Oxystele tabularisand O. variegata exhibited asynchronous intermittent spawningthroughout the study period. However, intensified spawning activityby O. tabularis was noted between April and September. The reproductivecycles and mechanisms of these trochids are compared with thoseelsewhere. The idea that territorial aggression is regulated by androgensand that aggression itself can modulate androgen levels is wellestablished in males. In many species, females also displayaggressive behavior, yet little work has been conducted on theeffects of female aggression on hormone levels. In this study,we compared the effects of a simulated territory intrusion (amethod for testing the Challenge Hypothesis) on males and femalesof the fish, Neolamprologus pulcher. This cichlid fish fromLake Tanganyika is a particularly useful species to examinesex differences in the behavioral mediation of hormones as breedingpairs remain in a territory year round and both sexes defendthis territory against conspecific and heterospecific intruders.In our study, both sexes indeed aggressively defended theirterritory against a simulated territory intruder. In responseto intruders, both males and females displayed elevated levelsof circulating 11-ketotestosterone, but only females exhibitedincreases in testosterone. Neither aggressing male nor femalefish showed changes in estradiol levels compared to control(nonaggressing) fish. Residents were more aggressive than theintruders and won most of the interactions. However, residents(or winners) did not show higher hormone levels than intruders(or losers). We suggest that aggression commonly modulates androgenlevels in both male and female teleost fish.  相似文献

A multiple character analysis was undertaken of a broadly representativesample of three species:Canis lupus (wolf), C. latrans (coyote),and C. familiaris (dog). These species are clearly and significantlydistinguished by the technique of linear discrimination. Theanalysis provides a basis for the identification of skulls notobviously distinguishable by size or other diagnostic characters. Early populations of Canis n. niger and C. n. gregoryi (redwolf) are compared with the three species above and are foundto form a cluster with lupus and to be sharply distinct fromthe other two species. Additional comparisons show that whilelupus lycaon and niger both overlap with lupus, they are distinctfrom each other. This entire cluster is quite distinct fromlatrans, with niger being the farthest removed. A sample populationof C. n. gregoiyi, from the edge of the extending range of C.latrans, was examined and found to show too great a range ofvariation to be attributed to a single species.  相似文献

Mercurialis annua L. is a dioecious anemophilous species thatflowers all year round in central and southern Italy. The flowersof both sexes are dimorphic: the female flower has a vestigialcalyx; the male flower consists only of a calyx that opens atanthesis. The anthers always dehisce after anthesis. The anthesisof male flowers seems to be temperature dependent, whereas antherdehiscence is related to relative humidity. The pollen grainsvary in volume according to the season: they are smaller whenrelative humidity is low and vice versa. They always decreasein volume after anther dehiscence and have the capacity to varyin volume and reach equilibrium with a changing environment.Viability is high, but may drop suddenly during heavy rain orhail that damage the exposed male flowers. The number of pollengrains per stigma varies from 0 to 300. Feeding rates and mass loss during chick rearing were comparedfor individually marked parents of male and female Common Murre(Uria aalge) chicks at Great Island, Newfoundland, Canada, from1997–2001. Both parents in this socially monogamous seabirdspecies share parental care duties until colony departure, afterwhich the single chick is fed only by its father. Because murresprovision their single chicks with one clearly visible fishper trip, it is possible to accurately determine whether parentsdifferentially feed male and female chicks. Based on slightlygreater mass of males in adulthood, possibly favored by sexdifferences in breeding roles, we predicted that male nestlingswould be fed more than females. Fathers' feeding rate to sons,but not daughters, increased with chick age, whereas maternalfeeding rate increased with chick age for both sexes. When year-correctedfeeding rates of pairs rearing both sexes were compared, bothmothers and fathers fed their sons significantly more than theirdaughters in the later part of the chick-rearing period. Moreover,parents rearing male chicks lost mass at a significantly higherrate than those rearing females. There was no difference infledging age for sons and daughters. These results indicatethat differential parental allocation occurs and has measurablecosts even in a species with only slight adult sexual dimorphism.  相似文献

The cestode Schistocephalus solidus uses copepods as first andsticklebacks as second intermediate hosts. For transmission,an infected copepod has to be preyed upon by a stickleback.We used copepods of the species Macrocy albidus to test whetherinfected and uninfected copepods differ in their reaction totwo kind of simultaneously presented odors: odors of sticklebacksand odors of sticklebacks and conspecificz. By giving this choice,we attempted to force the copepods to make a trade-off betweenthe benefit of risk dilution and possible predator confusionand the costs of food competition and other disadvantages inducedby conspecifics. Within 1–8 h after last feeding, uninfectedcopepods clearly preferred the odors of conspeciflcs under thechemically simulated threat of predation. This was in contrastto the infected copepods, who tended to avoid the odor of conspecifics.When the time between experiment and last feeding varied, infectedcopepods showed an increas preference for fish water only (oravoided conspecthcs) with increasing hunger level This suggeststhat S. solidus benefits from hunger-induced behavioral changesof its copepod host by influencing its microhabitat selection.The same effect could be found in both sexes; however, it wassignificantly more pronounced in male than in female copepods.We propose several hypotheses that could explain the differencebetween the sexes in their infection-dependent microhabitatselection.  相似文献

Shell shape and growth of two unionacean species, Villosa villosaand Elliptio icterina, are analyzed with univariate and multivariatetechniques. The relationship of shape variables to size variablesis examined. Under the lognormal assumption, parametric testsof these allometric relationships are valid. Variables describingthe ventro-posterior region of the shell are shown to be thebest of those tested for discriminating between the sexes ofboth species regardless of statistical method. Neither speciesexhibits size sexual dimorphism. Shape sexual dimorphism ofV. villosa is constant during adult growth, but the more subtledimorphism of E. icterina changes as adults continue to grow. Ontogenetic conflict arises when optima for alleles governingfitness variation differ between juveniles and adults or betweenadult sexes. Loci that govern development of alternative phenotypesin the sexes, hereafter termed morph-determining loci, mediatedevelopment through the endocrine system. Morphotypic selectionis defined to be multivariate selection favoring discrete alternativemorphotypes (e.g., optima). When the optimal combinations ofalleles for alternative morphs differ between the sexes, itgenerates conflicting selection pressure and thus ontogeneticconflict. Selection on morph alleles promotes ontogenetic conflictbecause it perturbs physiological epistasis that governs theexpression of male versus female traits. Expression of physiologicaltraits arises from homeostasis that maintains trait expressionwithin a normal range. The genetic basis of homeostasis is likelyto arise from interactions among several genes (e.g., geneticepistasis) or protein products (e.g., physiological epistasis).For example, endocrine regulation arises from interactions betweengondatropins, which are protein hormones produced by the hypothalamic-pituitaryglands, and steroid hormones, which are produced by the gonads(e.g., HPG axis). The side-blotched lizard system is discussedwith respect to physiological bases of ontogenetic conflict.We also describe a novel molecular marker strategy for uncoveringgenome-wide physiological epistasis in nature. Finally, ontogeneticconflict exerts selection on females to evolve mate selectionor cryptic choice that is reflected in different sires beingchosen for son versus daughter production. We describe how side-blotchedlizard females ameliorate ontogenetic conflict by cryptic choiceof male genotypes to produce sons versus daughters.  相似文献

We investigated the adaptive significance of a sexually monomorphicornament in the black swan Cygnus atratus. Both sexes grow curledfeathers on their wings (range 7–22 curled feathers perwing), which are displayed prominently in a range of socialinteractions. The number of curled feathers increased untilthe birds reached sexual maturity (at 2 years of age) but didnot vary with age thereafter. We found evidence for both sexualand social functions of the ornament. Paired, mature individualsof both sexes had higher numbers of curled feathers than unpaired,mature birds, and individuals paired assortatively with respectto curled feather number, suggesting the feathers may be involvedin mutual sexual selection. More ornamented individuals weredominant in agonistic interactions with birds of the same sexand pairing status. Highly ornamented pairs were also more likelyto maintain extended tenancy of preferred cygnet feeding areas,which resulted in improved offspring survival. The curled feathersthus appear to function as a signal of social dominance, whichis highly correlated with reproductive success and is thereforea reliable signal of parental quality in mate choice.  相似文献

We investigated the factors controlling the relative abundancesof two Daphnia species, D.pulex and D.laevis, in a small Wisconsinpond. D.pulex was the dominant Daphnia species in fall 1977and summer-fall 1978; D.laevis was the only Daphnia speciespresent in summer 1979. The abundance of D.laevis was positivelycorrelated with the abundance of the notonectid, Buenoa confusa.In predation trials, notonectides exhibited a distinct preferencefor D.pulex over similarly-sized D.laevis, but Chaoborus larvaefed at similar rates on both Daphnia species. Behavioral observationsrevealed that Buenoa adults were much less efficient at capturingD.laevis than D.pulex. Quantitative results of these predationtrials were combined with estimates of predator and prey densityand distribution to evaluate the effect of predation on thedaphnid populations. The effect of predation varied throughtime and microhabitat, and only infrequently could predationaccount for total prey mortality. D.laevis was most abundantat times and in places where Buenoa predation was most intense.Competition experiments illustrated the competitive superiorityof D.pulex over D.laevis. D.pulex was able to competitivelyexclude D.laevis in long term experiments, and D.pulex's fecunditywas higher than that of D.laevis in shorter experiments. Inlong-term experiments, Chaoborus larvae at natural densitieswere able to keep both Daphnia species at low, constant levelsand neither species clearly dominated when Chaoborus was present.The relative abundances of D.pulex and D.laevis were controlledby a complex of biotic and abiotic factors. Pond depth and predatordensity determined the intensity of predation on daphnid populations.When notonectid predation was intense, D.laevis dominated; whenthe intensity of predation by notonectids was low, D.pulex dominateddue to its superior competitive abilities.
