Data on the sexual maturation of a transported natural troop of Japanese macaques were collected during the 1973–74 and 1974–75
breeding seasons. Analysis of the data revealed that the sexual maturation of many monkeys was delayed one to two years. It
is suggested that the delay of sexual maturation is related to a failure of the pubescent-aged monkeys to attain appropriate
weight levels after transportation.

A series of encounters between a transplanted troop of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) and one or more bobcats (Lynx rufus) is described. One incident of predation was observed and four additional cases assumed. Reactions of identified individuals and groups of monkeys as well as general troop reactions are noted. The effects of breeding season behavior, troop size, differences in mother care, behavior of the bobcat, and the structure of the south Texas environment are explored. After the observed predation incident, intervention by the researchers affected the behavior of the monkeys and the bobcat, and reduced encounters. 相似文献

Self-wrist biting in the Arashiyama-B troop of Japanese monkeys was observed during a nearly 4-year study. In all, six monkeys
were seen performing this behavioural pattern. Medium ranking monkeys belonging to the age class 2–7 years performed this
behavioural pattern most frequently. A slight tendency for the diffusion of this behaviour along kinship lines was also observed. 相似文献

Seasonal variations in levels of serum testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), reproductive behavior, and social behavior were investigated in 12 adult males (5 to 20+ years of age) of the Oregon troop of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Blood samples were collected at 2- to 4-month intervals, and behaviors were monitored twice weekly over a 15-month period. Significant seasonal variations in levels of testosterone and DHT, and in frequencies of mount series, ejaculations, number of female partners, displays, courtship, and aggression were observed. Seasonal variations in reproductive and social behaviors did not correlate with seasonal variations in androgen levels because seasonal increases in these behaviors followed seasonal increases in the androgens with a 1- to 2-month delay. However, significant correlations between increased androgen levels and the onset of mating activity occur when mean monthly frequencies of mount series are shifted 1 to 2 months earlier to coincide with the rise in serum androgen levels. The frequency of adult male play and male-male mounting increased significantly when androgen levels were low. We suggest that photoperiod changes may function as a proximate cue in male Japanese macaques which induces a state of biological readiness for mating, and the behavioral consequences (i.e., mating) are then dependent upon the presence of receptive females. 相似文献

The social and sexual behaviors of four groups of males (4, 5, 9, and 10 years old) were compared throughout one complete mating season in a confined troop of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). The aim of this research was to document social behavior changes that occurred during adolescence and to relate them to changes in sexual behavior that occurred at puberty. The 4-year-old males all mounted females and ejaculated but they had significantly fewer ejaculations and female partners than did the older males. The 4-year-old males also showed a pattern of delayed development in tail carriage and courtship, and they played more frequently than the older males. There were no significant differences in the frequency of aggression among the groups, but both 4-year-old and 5-year-old males were displaced by adult males and females more frequently than were the older males. We concluded that the development of adult patterns of social behavior in this genus is not climactic, but occurs slowly one to two years after physiological puberty has been reached. 相似文献

This report contains detailed data on the sexual behavior of the 60 sexually mature females of the Arashiyama West troop of
Japanese macaques.
The study group was a natural troop transported intact in 1972 to a ranch in South Texas. Since transplantation, the monkeys
have been free to roam and feed within a 42.2 ha enclosure. Analysis of data collected on the 140 monkeys that composed the
troop during the 1973–74 and 1974–75 breeding seasons revealed: (1) Female-male mounting is an important aspect of Japanese
macaque sexual behavior; (2) All females had preferred partners and most avoided both heterosexual and homosexual interactions
with close kin; (3) Pubescent and adult females exhibit different patterns of sexual behavior; (4) Pubescent and adult females
were affected somewhat differently by the transportation from Japan to their current home in South Texas. These behavioral
patterns and their implications are discussed.

I analyzed the temporal organization of individual Japanese macaques’ (Macaca fuscata) grooming sequences in 14 mothers and 13 offspring of different age/sex classes and 4 nonkin females. I hypothesized that
preceding grooming affects subsequent grooming by the same individual. Grooming bouts were likely to be terminated as the
bouts became longer when females groomed nonrelatives. Moreover, the duration of first bouts was longer than that of following
bouts. These effects were also seen in grooming of mothers by their offspring > 1 year old and that of adult and adolescent
female offspring by their mothers. In contrast, neither the duration of first bouts nor the number of preceding bouts had
much effect on the occurrence or duration of subsequent bouts in any subject. 相似文献

Evidence is reviewed that female Japanese macaques have multiple male mating partners when they are available and show a preference
for mating with sexually unfamiliar males. Several lines of evidence suggest that this aspect of female sexual behavior results
in the offspring of an individual female being sired by more than one male thereby maintaining the genetic diversity of the
troop. Evidence is presented in this paper that a decrease in the number of adult troop males and a lack of extra-troop migrant
males in the Arashiyama West troop of Japanese macaques following transplantation to a ranch in south Texas had consequences
for the sexual behavior of the females. 相似文献

Male Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui) in a troop on Yakushima Island frequently groom other males. However, previous studies have not compared the social relations of troop males to those of non-troop males. I followed all troop males and non-troop males in and near a troop during a mating season and during the following non-mating season and recorded their neighbors, grooming, and agonistic interactions. Comparisons of the social relations of troop males and non-troop males with other troop members revealed that grooming and agonistic interactions with females during the mating season were similar between troop and non-troop males. However, troop males groomed each other more often and had fewer agonistic interactions among themselves than did non-troop males. Compared to what occurred in the mating season, troop males groomed females less often and exchanged grooming bouts more often with other troop males during the non-mating season. One non-troop male groomed females more frequently than did any troop male in both seasons, and this male groomed troop males more frequently than did any troop male in the non-mating season. This male immigrated into the troop during the following mating season. Regardless of their competition with respect to reproduction, male Japanese macaques on Yakushima Island maintain affiliative relations, probably to cooperatively defend fertile females from non-troop males. 相似文献

Play is widespread across mammalian taxa, but species strongly vary in the ways they play. In less despotic primate species (i.e., with less steep dominance hierarchies, less severe conflicts, and more reconciliation), play has been described as being more frequent, cooperative, and freely expressed. To study the link between social play and dominance style, we compared play behavior in free-ranging infants, juveniles and subadults of more despotic Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata, N = 24) and less despotic moor macaques (Macaca maura, N = 17). We found interspecific differences in play behavior that corresponded with the contrasting dominance styles of the study species, largely confirming our predictions. In particular, moor macaques spent a larger proportion of time in solitary and social play than Japanese macaques, while Japanese macaques spent a larger proportion of time in grooming interactions. In moor macaques, play sessions included more players, a larger variety of play behaviors, greater play face rates, a greater proportion of time in contact play, and a higher rate of reciprocal play-biting than in Japanese macaques. Aggressive escalations were not common, but more frequent in Japanese macaques. Finally, a higher frequency of play faces during play sessions predicted the occurrence of more reciprocal play-bites, but not the proportion of time spent in contact play behaviors. Additional studies on other groups and species will allow a better understanding of the link between dominance style and social play. 相似文献

When the individual Japanese macaques of the Koshima troop feed on natural food, they usually feed alone. In situations where
animals usually feed without other animals, there is a possibility that subordinate animals may avoid feeding sites at which
dominant animals are feeding. This paper examines whether social relationships such as kinship or dominance exert any influence
on an animal's choice of feeding sites, by analyzing episodes in which an animal approached and climbed into a tree where
other animals were. As a result, it was found that social relationships did not influence whether an animal climbed into a
tree where other animals were feeding, and that no particular age-sex pair co-fed. Agonistic interactions frequently occurred
when the inter-individual distance was less than 1 m. From these findings, the feeding sites were divided into two spaces:
(1) a tolerance feeding space, and (2) an intolerance feeding space. It is presumed that animals can feed without entering
others' intolerance feeding spaces when food is abundant, as it was in the present study period. Thus social relationships
do not influence an animal's choice of feeding sites in such a situation. 相似文献

The noninvasive collection of animal cells is crucial for DNA analyses in wild populations that cannot be disturbed by capture. We describe the collection of 68 semen samples following copulation and masturbation events in wild habituated and nonhabituated troops of Japanese macaques on the protected island of Yakushima. We used this DNA to amplify 390 base pairs (bp) of the mitochondrial DNA control region in 16 individuals from eight troops, and found a monomorphic pattern in agreement with the low variability imposed by geographic isolation and female philopatry. We also amplified two microsatellite loci from samples collected after the resident males of a focal troop had copulated with different females. We found several different allele combinations in samples collected after the observed mating of a single male, indicating the presence of contaminant DNA, presumably from males that had previously mated with the same female. This discovery made it impossible to assign a given sample to a specific male except when the samples were recovered after masturbation events. Thus, it was not possible to test for kinship or estimate allele frequencies from the semen samples. The mixing of semen, and the pattern of sample collection observed in morphologically identified individuals support the notion that strong mating and sperm competition exists among resident and nonresident males. 相似文献

A case of food-washing tradition is reported in a captive group of Japanese macaques. Two techniques are employed, with one
or both hands being used to wash food under water flowing from watering spouts. Processes of diffusion of the behaviour in
the group follow the patterns previously described by Japanese scientists observing this species. It is suggested that development
of such a behaviour could be related to particular environmental conditions. 相似文献

From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, many congenitally malformed infants were born into provisioned Japanese macaque troops. Although the exact cause of this problem was not determined, the occurrence of malformations decreased thereafter. We examined possible factors such as total population size, number of adult females, birth rate, and volume of provisioned food. Agrichemicals attached to provisioned food are suspected as the main cause, as other factors were found to have no influence. Many more malformations were seen in males compared with females, in feet compared with hands, and in the fourth compared with other digits. We confirmed that the frequency of congenital malformation was high during the 1960s through to the mid-1970s when increased levels of provisioned food were given and that the incidence of congenital malformations was also elevated among wild macaques during this time. 相似文献

Seasonal changes in the spermatogenic epithelium of adult Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata fuscata)

A histological study was undertaken to clarify seasonal changes in the spermatogenic epithelium of Japanese macaques. Testicular
tissue samples were excised by biopsies from five adult laboratory-maintained males in mating and non-mating seasons. The
samples were fixed with Bouin's solution, embedded in paraffin, and stained with PAS and hematoxylin. Microscopic observations
on cross-sections of seminiferous tubules revealed that the seminiferous epithelium in the mating season was thicker than
in the non-mating season. PAS-stained granules were found in some of the dark A-type spermatogonia, which significantly increased
in the non-mating season. Spermatids of the steps preceding the appearance of the acrosomic cap in stages I to III were observed
significantly more often than those in the step coinciding with the formation of the acrosomic cap in stage IV. In stage I,
the ratio of mature spermatids or spermatozoa to immature spermatids in the mating season was higher than that in the non-mating
season. These findings suggest that spermiogenesis, as well as spermatocytogenesis, is inhibited in the non-mating season. 相似文献

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), which is transmitted by mosquitoes, infects many animal species and causes serious acute encephalitis in humans and horses. In this study, a serosurvey of JEV in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) reared in Aichi Prefecture was conducted using purified JEV as an antigen for ELISA. The results revealed that 146 of 332 monkeys (44 %) were seropositive for JEV. In addition, 35 of 131 monkeys (27 %) born in the facility were seropositive, and the annual infection rate in the facility was estimated as 13 %. Our results provide evidence of the frequent exposure of many Japanese macaques to JEV, suggesting that there is a risk of JEV transmission to humans by mosquitoes. 相似文献

This study demonstrates that the reproductive seasonality ofMacaca fuscata seems to be more affected by environmental temperature than by photoperiod. Mean conception dates for 25 groups of Japanese
macaques species did not correlate with latitude. Instead, they were positively related to mean fall and winter temperatures
and negatively related to the magnitude of the decrease in the mean temperature from summer to fall. Evidence from transplanted
groups supports the hypothesis that environmental temperature is a decisive factor in determining the timing of mating activities
of Japanese macaques. These results are also consistent with the concept that, in temperate zones, environmental temperature
is probably the best indicator of local climatic characteristics. 相似文献
