Genetic variation of 1017 specimens of codworm, Pseudoterranova decipiens, collected from fish and seals at 23 sampling locations in the North Atlantic and Norwegian and Barents Seas, was analysed on the basis of 16 enzyme loci. Three reproductively isolated species, provisionally designated P. decipiens A, B and C, were detected, showing distinct alleles at the following loci: Mdh-1, 6Pgdh, Np, Pgm, Est-2 (between species A and B); Mdh-3, 6Pgdh, Np, Sod-1, Adk, Pgm, Est-2, Mpi (between A and C); Mdh-1, Mdh-3, Sod-1, Adk, Pgm, Est-2, Mpi (between B and C). One F1 hybrid was observed between P. decipiens A and B, but this apparently does not lead to any gene exchange between the two species, which do not show any evidence of introgression. No hybrids or introgressed individuals were observed between P. decipiens C and either A or B. Genetic distances among conspecific populations were low (average Nei's D 0.001-0.005), even though they were collected thousands of kilometres apart, indicating high levels of gene flow within each of the three species. The values of Nei's index D were 0.44 between P. decipiens A and B, 0.57 between B and C, and 0.79 between A and C. Estimated evolutionary divergence times, using Nei's formula, range from 2 to 4 million years. Differences between P. decipiens A, B and C were also found with respect to genetic variability, morphology, geographical distribution and hosts. Mean heterozygosity values of 0.08, 0.05 and 0.02 were obtained for P. decipiens A, B and C, respectively. Preliminary morphological examination of adult males, previously identified by multilocus electrophoresis, revealed differences in the relative size and pattern of caudal papillae. P. decipiens B is widespread in the study area, whereas P. decipiens A was found only in the North-East Atlantic and Norwegian Sea. In this area P. decipiens A is most common in the grey seal, Halichoerus grypus, while the common seal, Phoca vitulina, is the main host for P. decipiens B. In Canadian Atlantic waters, where P. decipiens A is apparently absent, P. decipiens B infects both grey and common seals; a few specimens were also found in the hooded seal, Cystophora cristata. The only definitive host so far identified for P. decipiens C is the bearded seal, Erignathus barbatus; P. decipiens C appears to be widespread, occurring in both the North-West Atlantic and Barents Sea.  相似文献

Third larval stages (L3) removed from fish fillets, fourth larval stages (L4) raised in in vitro culture, and adults of Pseudoterranova decipiens, collected from grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) stomachs, were exposed to the broad spectrum anthelmintic, ivermectin. L3 and L4 parasites were exposed, in vitro, to 500, 100, 50, 20, 5 and 1 micrograms/ml concentrations of the drug, in culture media. Adult P. decipiens were exposed in vitro to a concentration of 500 micrograms/ml ivermectin, only. Controls consisted of parasites placed in culture media alone or culture media plus drug vehicle. These three developmental stages of P. decipiens were all found to be susceptible to the effects of ivermectin.  相似文献

Recent unidirectional climatic trends and changes in top predator population ecology suggest that long-term modifications may be happening in Hudson Bay, Canada. Effects of such changes on ice-obligated seal populations are expected but long-term studies are required to differentiate climate-induced changes from natural variation. We conducted strip-transect surveys in late spring in 1995–1997, 1999–2000 and 2007–2008 to estimate distribution, density and abundance of ice-obligated ringed (Phoca hispida) and bearded (Erignathus barbatus) seals in western Hudson Bay. When hauled out, ringed seals preferred land-fast and consolidated pack ice, whereas bearded seals preferred unconsolidated pack ice. Bearded and ringed seal density estimates varied from 0.0036 to 0.0229 seals/km2 of ice and from 0.46 to 1.60 seals/km2 of ice, respectively. Strong inter-annual variations were recorded in the abundance estimates of both species, with the largest abundance estimates in 1995 (104,162 and 1,494 ringed and bearded seals, respectively) and the lowest in 2008 for ringed seals (33,701) and 1997 for bearded seals (278). A sine function best described seal density estimates in western Hudson Bay and suggested a decadal cycle. Previous studies that reported low ringed seal demographic parameters in the 1990s and a recovery in the 2000s supported our interpretation of the survey results. We discuss our results in the context of climate warming and suggest that a long-term decline in ice-obligated seal density estimates may overlay a possible natural decadal cycle.  相似文献

In August–September 2015 in the southwest part of the Kara Sea, visual censuses of ringed seal (Phoca hispida) and bearded seal (Erignatus barbatus) from research vessels were carried out in the water area of 49 814 km2. For the first time, for calculation of abundance and density on ice-free area the SEAL-CALCULATION (TYULEN-RASCHET) software was used with application of separate extrapolation method by the selected sectors. Calculation for the whole census polygon yielded abundance of ringed seal of 4163 ± 16.9% and abundance of bearded seal of 1026 ± 28.4%. On the basis of the census results, a preliminary estimation of distribution of pinnipeds by various depths is presented.  相似文献

The soundscape is a crucial habitat feature for marine mammals. This study investigates the contribution of bearded seal vocalizations to the soundscape in the western Canadian Arctic, and also the vocal characteristics of bearded seals relative to sea ice conditions. Passive acoustic data were recorded near Sachs Harbour between August 2015 and July 2016. Sound pressure levels (SPL) in the 50–1,000 Hz and 1–10 kHz bands increased as the total duration of all bearded seal vocalizations increased, and this relationship was moderated by sea ice concentration. Bearded seals in this region had an overlapping vocal repertoire with bearded seals in other areas of the Arctic, and had seven additional vocalizations that have not been previously documented for this region. This study is the first detailed assessment of the influence of bearded seal calls on SPL, which shows the high potential of bearded seals to influence underwater sound levels during the mating season. Bearded seals live in a changing Arctic seascape, and their influence on the soundscape may shift as sea ice continues to diminish. It is imperative that acoustic monitoring continues within the Arctic, and this study provides a baseline for future monitoring as the Arctic continues to change.  相似文献

The cumulative effect of individual‐level foraging patterns may have important consequences for ecosystem functioning, population dynamics and conservation. Dietary specialization, whereby an individual exploits a subset of resources available to the rest of the population, can develop in response to environmental or intrinsic population factors. However, accurate assessment of individual diets may be difficult because analyses of recent food intake may misrepresent foraging variability within a heterogeneous environment. We used quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) and a novel index of longitudinal dietary change to examine the individual foraging patterns of 64 polar bears Ursus maritimus successively sampled in Western and Southern Hudson Bay between 1994–2003. Estimated diets varied between and within age and sex classes, with adult male polar bears consuming significantly more bearded seal Erignathus barbatus than adult female or subadult bears, whose diets were dominated by ringed seal Pusa hispida. Among individual adult males, consumption of bearded seal accounted for 0–98% of the diet and bearded seal consumption was positively correlated with individual dietary specialization, as measured by proportional similarity (PSi) to the rest of the population. Most individual diets were consistent from year‐to‐year and were therefore not a product of short‐term heterogeneity in prey distribution. However, a novel dietary change index indicated that adult male polar bears had the most temporally variable diets with 23% of adult males switching their diet from predominantly ringed seal to predominantly bearded seal or vice versa. We conclude that QFASA is well‐suited to analyses of individual‐level foraging because it reflects an animal's diet over the preceding weeks to months. The subpopulations of bears in this study were near the southern limit of their species range and have experienced negative individual‐ and population‐level impacts related to sea ice loss and climate warming. The tightly constrained diets of some individuals, particularly adult females and subadults, may make them especially sensitive to future climate change.  相似文献

Aerial surveys were conducted in 1999 and 2000 to estimate the densities of ringed (Phoca hispida) and bearded (Erignathus barbatus) seals in the eastern Chukchi Sea. Survey lines were focused mainly on the coastal zone within 37 km of the shoreline, with additional lines flown 148–185 km offshore to assess how densities of seals changed as a function of distance from shore. Satellite-linked time-depth recorders were attached to ringed seals in both years to evaluate the time spent basking on the ice surface. Haulout patterns indicated that ringed seals transitioned to basking behavior in late May and early June, and that the largest proportion of seals (60–68%) was hauled out between 0830 and 1530 local solar time. Ringed seals were relatively common in nearshore fast ice and pack ice, with lower densities in offshore pack ice. The average density of ringed seals was 1.91 seals km−2 in 1999 (range 0.37–16.32) and 1.62 seals km−2 in 2000 (range 0.42–19.4), with the highest densities of ringed seals found in coastal waters south of Kivalina and near Kotzebue Sound. The estimated abundance of ringed seals for the entire study area was similar in 1999 (252,488 seals, SE=47,204) and 2000 (208,857 seals, SE=25,502). Bearded seals were generally more common in offshore pack ice, with the exception of high bearded seal numbers observed near the shore south of Kivalina. Bearded seal densities were not adjusted for haulout behavior, and therefore, abundance was not estimated. Unadjusted average bearded seal density was 0.07 seals km−2 in 1999 (range 0.011–0.393) and 0.14 seals km−2 in 2000 (range 0.009–0.652). Levels of primary productivity, benthic biomass, and fast ice distribution may influence the distributions of ringed and bearded seals in the Chukchi Sea. Information on movement and haulout behavior of ringed and bearded seals would be very useful for designing future surveys.  相似文献

Domoic acid (DA) and saxitoxin (STX)-producing algae are present in Alaskan seas, presenting exposure risks to marine mammals that may be increasing due to climate change. To investigate potential increases in exposure risks to four pagophilic ice seal species (Erignathus barbatus, bearded seals; Pusa hispida, ringed seals; Phoca largha, spotted seals; and Histriophoca fasciata, ribbon seals), this study analyzed samples from 998 seals harvested for subsistence purposes in western and northern Alaska during 2005–2019 for DA and STX. Both toxins were detected in bearded, ringed, and spotted seals, though no clinical signs of acute neurotoxicity were reported in harvested seals. Bearded seals had the highest prevalence of each toxin, followed by ringed seals. Bearded seal stomach content samples from the Bering Sea showed a significant increase in DA prevalence with time (logistic regression, p = .004). These findings are consistent with predicted northward expansion of DA-producing algae. A comparison of paired samples taken from the stomachs and colons of 15 seals found that colon content consistently had higher concentrations of both toxins. Collectively, these results suggest that ice seals, particularly bearded seals (benthic foraging specialists), are suitable sentinels for monitoring HAB prevalence in the Pacific Arctic and subarctic.  相似文献

Bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) are pan-Arctic pinnipeds that are often seen in association with pack ice, and are known for their long, loud trills, produced underwater primarily in the spring. Acoustic recordings were collected from August 2008 to August 2010 at two locations and a single year (2008–2009) at a third location, in the western Beaufort Sea. Three recorders in 2008–2009 had a 30 % duty cycle and a bandwidth of 10–4,096 Hz. One recorder in 2009–2010 had a 45 % duty cycle and a bandwidth of 10–4,096 Hz and the second had a 20 % duty cycle and bandwidth of 10–8,192 Hz. Spectrograms of acoustic data were examined for characteristic patterns of bearded seal vocalizations. For each recorder, the number of hours per day with vocalizations was compared with in situ water temperature and satellite-derived daily sea ice concentrations. At all sites, bearded seals were vocally active year-round. Call activity escalated with the formation of pack ice in the winter and the peak occurred in the spring, coinciding with mating season and preceding breakup of the sea ice. There was a change in the timing of seasonal sea ice formation and retreat between the two consecutive years that was reflected in the timing of peak bearded seal call activity. This study provides new information on fall and winter bearded seal vocal behavior and the relationship between year-round vocal activity and changes in annual sea ice coverage and in situ water temperature.  相似文献

鳍脚类主要分布在寒冷水域。我国海域的水温相对较高,已发现的鳍脚类种类和数量都很少,除黄海和渤海的斑海豹外,其他都是离开了正常分布区的漫游个体。对斑海豹Phoca largha已有过几篇报道(汪克贤,1955;李秀朋,1965;李荣光,1980;王者茂,1984)。对另3种鳍脚类只有零星记录(王者茂,1973;诸葛阳,1982;黄圮,1984)。本文首次报道漫游到中国近海的环海豹 Phoca hispida ochotensis Pallas,同时对中国沿岸斑海豹及另3种鳍脚类的漫游个体作简要介绍。  相似文献

Feeding habits of ringed (Phoca hispida), bearded (Erignathus barbatus), spotted (Phoca largha) and ribbon (Phoca fasciata) seals and walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) were studied using stomach contents and stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. Bearded seals fed benthically, primarily crustaceans and mollusks. Both zooplankton and fish were significant prey for ringed seals, while fish was principal spotted seal prey. Few gastric contents were available from ribbon seals. δ15N was positively correlated with age in ribbon seals and δ13C was positively correlated with age in ringed and ribbon seals. δ15N was highest in spotted seals, in agreement with their fish-dominated diet. δ15N was not different between Alaskan-harvested ringed and bearded seals, while δ15N was lowest in ribbon seals and walrus. Carbon-13 was most enriched in bearded seals and walrus reflecting benthic ecosystem use. Canadian ringed seals were depleted in 13C compared to Alaskan pinnipeds, likely because of Beaufort Sea versus Chukchi and Bering seas influence.  相似文献

Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) from the southern Beaufort Sea (SB) subpopulation have traditionally fed predominantly upon ice‐seals; however, as the proportion of the subpopulation using onshore habitat has recently increased, foraging on land‐based resources, including remains of subsistence‐harvested bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) and colonial nesting seabirds has been observed. Adipose tissue samples were collected from this subpopulation during the springs of 2013–2016 and analyzed for fatty acid signatures. Diet estimates were generated for the proportional consumption of ringed seal (Pusa hispida), bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), and beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas), relative to onshore foods, including bowhead whale remains and seabird, as represented by black guillemot (Cepphus grylle mandtii) nestlings and eggs. Quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) estimated that the ice‐obligate prey, ringed seal, remained the predominant prey species of SB polar bears (46.4 ± 1.8%), with much lower consumption of bearded seal (19.6 ± 2.0%), seabird (17.0 ± 1.2%), bowhead whale (15.0 ± 1.4%), and hardly any beluga whale (2.0 ± 0.5%). Adult and subadult females appeared to depend more on the traditional ringed seal prey than adult and subadult males. Diet estimates of SB polar bears showed significant interannual variability for all prey (F12, 456 = 3.17, p < .001). Longer‐term estimates suggested that both types of onshore prey, bowhead whale remains and seabird, have represented a moderate proportion of the food resources used by SB polar bears since at least the start of the 21st Century.  相似文献

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc-dependent enzymes capable of degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) and key player in various inflammatory diseases. We investigated the regulation of MMPs in chronic gastric ulceration in mice. We generated chronic gastric ulcers in mice by indomethacin and examined the activity and expression of MMP-9 and -3 in stomach. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) treatment has also been applied to mice to characterize the changes in expression and activities of MMPs in gastric tissues. We observed significant upregulation of MMP-9 and -3 expressions and activities in stomach with increasing doses and duration of indomethacin that corroborated with increased activity of activator protein (AP)-1. Substantial damage in gastric epithelial layer was found during chronic ulceration. Melatonin suppressed MMP-9 and -3 expressions and activities during prevention and healing of chronic gastric ulcers. It also suppressed protein oxidation, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes. Additionally, expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-8 was significantly high in ulcerated stomachs while melatonin treatment blocked them to control level. We found elevated phosphorylation of extracellular-regulated kinase (ERK)1/2 and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) during chronic gastric ulceration, which were significantly reversed by melatonin. Moreover, expression of NF-κB, c-fos and c-jun were inhibited by melatonin resulting down regulation of MMP-9 and -3 expressions. In summary, oxidative stress is preceded by chronic inflammation that enhances the expression of MMP-9 and -3, while melatonin arrests both of them via reduction of AP-1 activity during protection of ulcer.  相似文献

Effects of glucocorticoid deficiency followed by corticosterone replacement on the healing of gastric erosions and chronic gastric ulcers have been investigated in rats. Glucocorticoid deficiency was induced by adrenalectomy performed after the formation of gastric erosions or ulcers. Gastric erosions were produced by indomethacin (35 mg/kg, i.p.) or by 6 h immobilization at temperature 8 degrees C, chronic gastric ulcers were induced by 60% acetic acid. All ulcerogenic stimuli caused an increase in corticosterone production. Adrenalectomy created corticosterone deficiency and delayed the healing of gastric erosions and chronic gastric ulcers. The effect of adrenalectomy was more evident in the indomethacin ulcerogenic model. Replacement by corticosterone prompted the healing of gastric erosions and ulcers in adrenalectomized animals. These data suggest a participation of endogenous glucocorticoids in a restoration of gastric mucosal integrity.  相似文献

Carbohydrates were extracted from milk of a bearded seal, Erignathus barbatus (Family Phocidae). Free neutral oligosaccharides were separated by gel filtration, anion-exchange chromatography and preparative thin layer chromatography, while free acidic oligosaccharides were separated by gel filtration and then purified by ion exchange chromatography, gel filtration and high performance liquid chromatography. Oligosaccharide structures were determined by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The structures of the neutral oligosaccharides were as follows; lactose, 2'-fucosyllactose, lacto-N-fucopentaose IV, difucosyl lacto-N-neohexaose and difucosyl decasaccharide which contained a lacto-N-neohexaose unit as well as an additional Gal(beta1-4)GlcNAc(beta1-3) unit and two residues of non-reducing Fuc(alpha1-2). The acidic oligosaccharides were thought to contain an Neu5Ac(alpha2-6) residue linked to GlcNAc or a sulfate linked to Gal at OH-3. The sialyl oligosaccharides and sulfated oligosaccharides had a lacto-N-neohexaose unit and two non-reducing Fuc(alpha1-2) residues and some of them had in addition one or two Gal(beta1-4)GlcNAc(beta1-3) units. The milk oligosaccharides of the bearded seal were compared to those of the harbour seal, which had been studied previously.  相似文献

In this study we used a Doppler ultrasonic device, in combination with a sonographic contrast medium, to test whether free-living bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus) pups have a closed (anatomically or functionally) foramen ovale. A total of 17 examinations were performed on 12 individual pups with a body mass range of 29-103 kg (0-21 days old). These examinations showed that young bearded seal pups dive with a patent foramen ovale (PFO), and that this structure starts to close, at least functionally, during the 2nd week of life. The wide range in the timing of closure (one animal 21 days old still had a PFO) indicates that a closed foramen ovale is not crucial for the diving that these seals perform at this age. The primary function of diving during the 1st week of life is to avoid surface predation and only moderate diving ability is sufficient to achieve this goal. However, some of the diving performed by bearded seal pups with a PFO would likely be sufficient to create intravenous bubble formation during breath-hold diving in humans. Special adaptations in the seals, such as collapsible lungs and diving with minimal lung air volume, probably prevent this from happening.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of gastric ulcers on somatic nociception in conscious rats. The formation of kissing gastric ulcers was induced by luminal application of 60% acetic. Somatic pain sensitivity was tested by tail flick latency. Application of acetic acid resulted in gastric ulcer formation, somatic hyperalgesia and the appearance of typical signs of chronic stress (a long-lasting increase of plasma corticosterone level, adrenal gland hypertrophy and thymus gland involution). Natural healing of gastric ulcers was accompanied by restoration of pain sensitivity and attenuation of typical signs of chronic stress. Both natural healing of gastric ulcers and restoration of pain sensitivity were prevented by daily indomethacin administration. The results suggest that the formation of chronic gastric ulcers may trigger somatic hypersensitivity.  相似文献

The effect of oxytocin (1 mg/kg s.c) on gastric acid secretion and on different experimentally induced gastric and duodenal ulcers was studied. The acute gastric ulcer models used were pylorus ligation, indomethacin, ethanol and histamine induced acute gastric ulcers. Chronic gastric ulcers were induced using acetic acid and duodenal ulcers by cysteamine hydrochloride. Oxytocin showed significant antisecretory and antiulcer activity in pylorus ligated rats. Similarly oxytocin reduced the ulcer index in histamine induced gastric ulcers in guinea pigs and cysteamine induced duodenal ulcers in rats. The antiulcer and antisecretory effect was comparable to that of ranitidine (50mg/kg, i.p) though less in intensity. However, it did not show any gastric cytoprotective effect in ethanol and indomethacin induced ulcer models but ranitidine showed protection (p<0.05) in later model. Oxytocin enhanced gastric ulcer healing in acetic acid induced chronic gastric ulcer model. The reversal of oxytocin effect by atosiban, an oxytocin receptor antagonist indicates a role for oxytocin receptors. The antiulcer activity of oxytocin can be attributed to its antisecretory effect.  相似文献

Lesions and antibody kinetics produced by inoculation of Gnathostoma binucleatum larvae into dogs are described, as well as the morphology of the recovered parasites. In four out of five infected bitches parasite phases were found in the stomach. Only one bitch eliminated eggs and adult parasite phases in feces. In this bitch, the prepatency period lasted 22 weeks and the patency period 14 weeks. Necropsy results showed a copiously vascularized 8-cm diameter fibrous nodule lodged in the greater curvature of the stomach. Two bitches that eliminated no eggs showed 1- to 2-cm diameter nodules on the gastric wall, with five juvenile phases in each. One bitch that eliminated no eggs and exhibited no gastric nodules showed juvenile parasites on the gastric wall. Results confirm dogs as definitive hosts of this parasite. New data on the pathological and parasitological aspects of canine gnathostomosis are presented.  相似文献

A basic understanding of current food web dynamics and baseline data from which to measure future change is necessary to understand species re-distribution and altered competition for food with climate change. We use mercury (Hg) and carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope ratios as biomarkers to understand species diet differences and age class differences among ringed (Phoca hispida), bearded (Erignathus barbatus), and harbour (P. vitulina) seals in a subarctic marine ecosystem. Adult bearded seals had significantly lower δ15N and muscle Hg than bearded seal pups, whereas the opposite was observed in ringed seals where pups had lower δ15N than adults, suggesting age specific foraging differences in trophic food level for both species. For harbour seals, δ15N did not differ significantly among ages while Hg and δ13C did. The δ13C in muscle supports that bearded seals in this study are benthic feeders and are part of a separate food web from ringed seals and harbour seals. Harbour seals had the highest levels of mercury and δ15N, indicating they feed at a higher trophic level relative to the other two seal species. Carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios and Hg levels illustrate how resources are partitioned among three seal species and offer evidence for separation based on life stages within species.  相似文献
