Although the nation, as a named community of history and culture, possessing a common territory, economy, mass education system and common legal rights, is a relatively modern phenomenon, its origins can be traced back to pre‐modern ethnic communities. Such named ethnies with their myths of common descent, common memories, culture and solidarity, and associations with a homeland, are found in both the ancient and the medieval periods in many areas of the world. Two kinds of ethnie are important for the origins and routes of the formation of nations. Territorial, ‘civic’ nations tend to develop from aristocratic ‘lateral’ ethnies through a process of ‘bureaucratic incorporation’ of outlying regions and lower classes into the ethnic culture of the upper classes, as occurred in France, England and Spain. The more numerous ‘ethnic’ nations, on the other hand, have emerged from demotic ‘vertical’ ethnies through processes of cultural mobilization that turn an often religiously defined and passive community into an active, politicized nation. Here the intellectuals and professionals replace the state as agents of popular mobilization, creating new ‘maps’ and ‘moralities’ through the uses of landscape and golden ages of a rediscovered and reconstructed communal past, as in Ireland, Finland and Switzerland. It is from these often ancient ties and sentiments that modern nations draw much of their power and durability today.  相似文献

We have developed a method to place an EF‐lobe in a coordinate system that recognizes the similarity of its two EF‐hand domains as well as their relationship by a pseudo‐two fold axis, z. The x‐axis connects the center of mass, calculated from α‐carbons of helices E1 and F1, with the center of mass of E2 and F2. The resulting coordinate system is intrinsic to each EF‐lobe and requires no comparison with other EF‐lobes. It has provided an intuitive and informative way to compare EF‐lobes and especially those changes associated with calcium and/or target binding. We analyzed the EF‐lobes of calmodulin and of other subfamilies with four EF‐hands. We have rationalized a complex pattern of changes of conformation associated with calcium coordination and effector binding as observed in different subfamilies of EF‐hand proteins. Castanera, D., Pascual, C., Canudo, J.I., Hernández, N. & Barco, J., 2012: Ethological variations in gauge in sauropod trackways from the Berriasian of Spain. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 476–489. Two sauropod trackways from the Early Cretaceous (Berriasian) of the Cameros Basin (Spain) show important variations in trackway gauge, along the same trackway. These variations seem to be associated with different behaviours; on the one hand with a significant variation in the direction of travel (turning phenomena) and on the other hand with a decrease in speed, probably associated with the properties of the substrate. These variations in sauropod trackways provide the trackway gauge debate with new data, supporting the hypothesis that the walking style and substrate properties may in some cases determine this sauropod character. Invasions mediated by humans have been reported from around the world, and ships’ ballast water has been recognized as the main source of marine invaders worldwide. Some invasions have dramatic economic and ecological consequences. On the other hand, many invasions especially in the marine realm, can go unnoticed. Here we identify a human mediated, worldwide introduction of the hydrozoan species Turritopsis dohrnii. The normal life cycle of hydrozoans involves the asexual budding of medusae from colonial polyps. Medusae of Turritopsis, however, when starved or damaged, are able to revert their life cycle, going back to the polyp stage through a process called transdifferentiation. They can thus easily survive through long journeys in cargo ships and ballast waters. We have identified a clade of the mitochondrial 16S gene in Turritopsis which contains individuals collected from Japan, the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Panama, Florida, Spain, and Italy differing from each other in only an average of 0.31% of their base-pairs. Fifteen individuals from Japan, Atlantic Panama, Spain, and Italy shared the same haplotype. Turritopsis dohrnii medusae, despite the lack of genetic differences, are morphologically different between the tropical and temperate locations we sampled, attesting to a process of phenotypic response to local conditions that contributes to making this grand scale invasion a silent one.  相似文献

The dehesa is a silvopastoral system of a high economic and ecological significance in the Iberian Peninsula that is protected under the EEC/92/43 Habitat Directive. One of the most serious problems the dehesa system is currently facing is oak decline. This tree decay process is largely caused by three xylophagous cerambycids of which Prinobius myardi is the least known. In this study, we used a capture-mark-recapture method to identify the models best fitting the behaviour of this species with a view to estimating basic population parameters such as survival rate (phi), recapture rate (p) and transiency index (T). Prinobius myardi adults were captured by hand following visual detection in the trees of a cork oak (Quercus suber) plot located in the close vicinity of the Doñana National Park (SW Spain). Males exhibited a constant survival rate exceeding 85.4% throughout their flight period, a maximum transiency index of 1.82% and a recapture rate ranging from 42.50% to 76.90%. These results are suggestive of a sedentary behaviour in P. myardi males. By contrast, the small number of females captured precluded calculation of the previous parameters for this gender; in any case, field observations revealed a fleeing, less sedentary behaviour with respect to the males.  相似文献

The number of wind power plants installed in Spain has increased dramatically, and many are located in important wildlife areas. This paper explores the geographical overlap of wind power plants with the ranges of flying vertebrate species. The list of animals studied includes bats, soaring birds, and other birds that may be killed by turbines. Results show that the 10 × 10 km UTM squares occupied by wind power plants fell within the range of more bat and bird species than squares free of these infrastructures. For species included in the Spanish Red List, there were more wind power plants than expected inside the range of two raptors (Neophron percnopterus and Circus pygargus) and less than expected in six species (Ciconia nigra, Aquila adalberti, Hieraetus fasciatus Myotis capaccinii, Rhinolophus mehelyi and Myotis myotis). The rest of endangered species (15) had a range occupation similar to that predicted by random sampling, a result that reflects a poor strategy to prevent the overlap. These patterns may be explained by the small amount of overlap of the range of many of these animals with the windiest areas in Spain, where wind power plants are concentrated today. However, this situation is changing rapidly with the densification and expansion of wind power plants promoted under the Spanish Plan of Renewable Energies. This may produce the occupation of many areas important to bird and bat conservation, and therefore preventive measures should be implemented to protect these species and their habitats.  相似文献

Brazil has great geopolitical importance because of its size, environmental resources, and potential economic power. The organisation of its health care system reflects the schisms within Brazilian society. High technology private care is available to the rich and inadequate public care to the poor. Limited financial resources have been overconcentrated on health care in the hospital sector and health professionals are generally inappropriately trained to meet the needs of the community. However, recent changes in the organisation of health care are taking power away from federal government to state and local authorities. This should help the process of reform, but many vested interests remain to be overcome. A link programme between Britain and Brazil focusing on primary care has resulted in exchange of ideas and staff between the two countries. If primary care in Brazil can be improved it could help to narrow the health divide between rich and poor.  相似文献

Schema design and implementation of the grasp-related mirror neuron system   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
 Mirror neurons within a monkey's premotor area F5 fire not only when the monkey performs a certain class of actions but also when the monkey observes another monkey (or the experimenter) perform a similar action. It has thus been argued that these neurons are crucial for understanding of actions by others. We offer the hand-state hypothesis as a new explanation of the evolution of this capability: the basic functionality of the F5 mirror system is to elaborate the appropriate feedback – what we call the hand state– for opposition-space based control of manual grasping of an object. Given this functionality, the social role of the F5 mirror system in understanding the actions of others may be seen as an exaptation gained by generalizing from one's own hand to an other's hand. In other words, mirror neurons first evolved to augment the “canonical” F5 neurons (active during self-movement based on observation of an object) by providing visual feedback on “hand state,” relating the shape of the hand to the shape of the object. We then introduce the MNS1 (mirror neuron system 1) model of F5 and related brain regions. The existing Fagg–Arbib–Rizzolatti–Sakata model represents circuitry for visually guided grasping of objects, linking the anterior intraparietal area (AIP) with F5 canonical neurons. The MNS1 model extends the AIP visual pathway by also modeling pathways, directed toward F5 mirror neurons, which match arm–hand trajectories to the affordances and location of a potential target object. We present the basic schemas for the MNS1 model, then aggregate them into three “grand schemas”– visual analysis of hand state, reach and grasp, and the core mirror circuit – for each of which we present a useful implementation (a non-neural visual processing system, a multijoint 3-D kinematics simulator, and a learning neural network, respectively). With this implementation we show how the mirror system may learnto recognize actions already in the repertoire of the F5 canonical neurons. We show that the connectivity pattern of mirror neuron circuitry can be established through training, and that the resultant network can exhibit a range of novel, physiologically interesting behaviors during the process of action recognition. We train the system on the basis of final grasp but then observe the whole time course of mirror neuron activity, yielding predictions for neurophysiological experiments under conditions of spatial perturbation, altered kinematics, and ambiguous grasp execution which highlight the importance of the timingof mirror neuron activity. Pathogenicity of some chrysosporium species isolated in France   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In order to appreciate the pathogenicity of several geophilic Chrysosporium species (including Anixiopsis stercoraria, Chrysosporium keratinophilum, C. tropicum, C. pannorum, C. state of Arthroderma curreyi, C. state of A. multifidum, and C. state of A. tuberculatum), the authors have realized two series of experimental infestations. Inoculation of these fungi on the back of guinea pigs produced rare erythematous scaling lesions which spontaneously disappeared 3–5 weeks later. No real hair invasion was observed. In white mice, eight weeks after intraperitoneal inoculation, granulomas with necrotic center were observed in the peritoneal tissue with C. keratinophilum, C. tropicum, C. state of A. curreyi and C. state of A. tuberculatum. Conidia were often intact in necrotic centers and retrocultures were positive. With C. state of A. curreyi, spherical spores associated with rare budding cells were noted. The pathogenic role of these keratinophilic fungi is uncertain. However, their ability to remain viable for several weeks in skin and peritoneal tissue indicates that they could become pathogen in certain circumstances.This paper was presented at the Xth congress of the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology at Barcelona, Spain from June 27 to July 1, 1988.  相似文献

The effect of ultra violet (UV)-absorbing plastic sheets on the host location ability of three commercially available parasitoids Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Diglyphus isaea Walker (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and Eretmocerus mundus Mercet (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) – was tested in the laboratory and in field trials. The parasitoids’ preference between natural light and UV-filtered light was tested under laboratory conditions in a Y-shaped pipe system. The vast majority of all three species were strongly attracted to non-UV-filtered light. In field trials parasitoid’s ability to locate a host-infested plant from a distance (approximately 10 m.) was tested. Host location by A. colemani and D. isaea, expressed by parasitization rates, was not affected by greenhouse covering plastic type (regular versus UV-absorbing plastic). E. mundus, on the other hand, was unable to locate the host-infested plant when the latter was placed in the center of the UV-absorbing plastic covered greenhouses. When the host-infested plants were located in the corners of the greenhouses and the wasps were released at the center, the parasitization rates were lower under the UV-absorbing plastic than under the regular plastic covered greenhouses. The significance of UV light to E. mundus host location process and the practical implications it has on the parasitoid’s application in the field are discussed.  相似文献

Microtubules, actin filaments, and Golgi apparatus are connected both directly and indirectly, but it is manifested differently depending on the cell organization and specialization, and these connections are considered in many original studies and reviews. In this review we would like to discuss what underlies differences in the structural organization of the Golgi apparatus in animal and plant cells: specific features of the microtubule cytoskeleton organization, the use of different cytoskeleton components for Golgi apparatus movement and maintenance of its integrity, or specific features of synthetic and secretory processes. We suppose that a dispersed state of the Golgi apparatus in higher plant cells cannot be explained only by specific features of the microtubule system organization and by the absence of centrosome as an active center of their organization because the Golgi apparatus is organized similarly in the cells of other organisms that possess the centrosome and centrosomal microtubules. One of the key factors determining the Golgi apparatus state in plant cells is the functional uniformity or functional specialization of stacks. The functional specialization does not suggest the joining of the stacks to form a ribbon; therefore, the disperse state of the Golgi apparatus needs to be supported, but it also can exist “by default”. We believe that the dispersed state of the Golgi apparatus in plants is supported, on one hand, by dynamic connections of the Golgi apparatus stacks with the actin filament system and, on the other hand, with the endoplasmic reticulum exit sites distributed throughout the endoplasmic reticulum.  相似文献

The carnivorous plant Drosophyllum lusitanicum inhabits heathland and ruderal sites in Portugal, Spain and Morocco. In the literature, various theories have been discussed concerning the ability of Drosophyllum to survive the annual dry period in summer. In August 2004, we examined: (1) the microclimate, (2) soil parameters and (3) the physiological conditions of the plants on two sites in Portugal and Spain. First, during the day, plants are exposed to very high air and soil temperatures and very low air humidity. The climatic extremes are not significantly softened by the population, only the wind speed is drastically decreased. During the night, on the other hand, very high air humidity and dew formation could be observed. The harsh climate is accompanied by stressful soil conditions. Second, the soil is completely dry, poor in fine earth, calcium and nutrients and more or less acid. Third, in spite of these climatic and edaphic extremes, all plants were green, produced trapping mucilage and caught numerous animals. Far from being affected by these conditions, Drosophyllum showed even better growth and reproduction on more extreme sites. We analysed the root system and found living fine roots missing. The osmotic value of the plants is rather low and water storage organs are absent. Therefore we conclude that in summer Drosophyllum is nourished by the dew at night.  相似文献

This study focuses on eugenics in Spain, and more specifically on the 'official' eugenics whose platform was the Primeras Jornadas Eugénicas Espa?olas (First Spanish Eugenic Days, FSED). The aim of this paper is to relate eugenics to 'governmentality' rather than to State politics alone and to 'Latin eugenics' rather than to 'mainline eugenics'. On the one hand, the FSED were largely centred on the development of a new sexual code which would set Catholic sexual morality aside. For this reason, sexual pedagogy was one of the most relevant topics during the FSED, personal responsibility becoming the first step to social change. The concern about making people play an active role in their own self-regulation is typical of governmentality. The latter refers to societies where power is decentered and where the objective is to structure the field of action of others (the conduct of conduct). On the other hand, the FSED emphasised preventive eugenics such as welfare programmes and health campaigns rather than negative eugenics such as the sterilisation of the unfit. The situation in Spain was mirrored in countries such as Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, which allows us to think about them in terms of 'Latin eugenics' rather than 'mainline eugenics' from countries such as Great Britain, Germany and the USA.  相似文献

We use the transnational adoption screening process as a lens for examining the co‐production of the home and the family in Spain. We propose the term ‘homework’ to describe the efforts of adoption applicants to perform an appropriate home and thus receive approval to adopt. The transnational adoption screening process is a key site of state‐individual interaction for communicating a set of classed, gendered norms. Through that process, participants ratify the authority of professionals to distinguish between adequate and inadequate ways to live. As such, our analysis demonstrates how moral authority is ascribed to material objects, as we document the strong link between ‘appropriate’ housing and growing families as an explanatory factor for the demographic effects of economic crises.  相似文献

Rhodopseudomonas viridis was grown in the presence and in the absence of yeast extract. The cells grown under this latter condition present a ten fold diminished bacteriochlorophyll (bchl) content. This decrease was paralleled by a similar increase in the ratio lipid phosphorous/bchl, whereas the ornithine lipid/bchl ratio remains constant. Some quantitative differences in the fatty acid composition are also reported.The protein composition of both membranes was also studied, only indicating quantitative differences.An active reaction center preparation was obtained from both types of cells. When isolated from cells grown in the presence of yeast extract, this reaction center preparation shows the presence of proteins a, b, c and d. Further treatment of this active reaction center results, in cells grown under either condition, in the isolation of green (oxidized behl) and brown (inactive reaction center) bchl containing fractions.The protein composition and absorption spectrum of the inactive reaction centers obtained from both types of cells were identical (proteins a, c and d).On the other hand the green complexes differ in their protein composition as well as in their absorption spectrum.  相似文献

Small-game hunting plays an important economic role in central Spain and some game species are key food resources for threatened predators. Small carnivores may reduce numbers of important game species. To alleviate predation pressure on game populations, management is often focused on predator control. Control methods can be non-selective, and so could potentially have a negative impact on non-target carnivore species, affecting carnivore guild composition and diversity. Using data on carnivore diversity in 70 quadrants (5 × 5 km) in a large area of central Spain with two main land uses (small-game hunting and a mixture of big-game hunting and forestry), we assessed how game management was related to carnivore diversity. Carnivore species richness was significantly lower in those areas managed for small-game hunting than in areas where other land uses predominated. The apparently least affected species by predator control was the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), the main target species of predator control. Results suggested that low carnivore species richness was linked to small-game hunting activities, which was probably associated with non-selective predator control practices. Therefore, in order to reconcile carnivore conservation and economic goals it is imperative to develop and to evaluate selective predator control techniques.  相似文献

Sudden changes in the variability of natural populations can result in increased likelihood of extinction or in greater frequency and intensity of pest outbreaks. These changes could be associated with changes in some relevant population parameters such as the equilibrium density or the maximum population growth rate. However, changes in these parameters have very different consequences. An increase in equilibrium density results in a higher variance in population fluctuations according to the relationship between mean and variance described by Taylor's power law, but does not modify the stability properties of the system. On the other hand, changes in the maximum growth rate induce changes in the dynamic regimes and stability properties of the population. In this study, using statistical and mathematical methods borrowed from econometrics and engineering, we identify structural changes to the variance in the population dynamics of the sycamore aphid Drepanosiphum platanoidis and the green spruce aphid Elatobium abietinum in the UK. Some localities showed strong changes in their population parameters, such that their dynamic regime changed completely. These changes in the population dynamic regimes increase the expected frequency of outbreaks, which has enormous economic and ecological consequences. Through this study we show the application of methods that could be helpful to pest and wildlife managers in the task of evaluating changes in the risk of outbreaks or extinction of animal populations under changing global environmental scenarios.  相似文献

Question: Which is the best model to predict the habitat distribution of Buxus balearica Lam. in southern Spain? Location: Málaga and Granada, Spain, across an area of 38 180 km2. Methods: Prediction models based on 17 environmental variables were tested. Six methods were compared: multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS), maximum entropy approach to modelling species' distributions (Maxent), two generic algorithms based on environmental metrics dissimilarity (BIOCLIM and DOMAIN), Genetic Algorithm for Rule‐set Prediction (GARP), and supervised learning methods based on generalized linear classifiers (support vector machines, SVMs). To test the predictive power of the models we used the Kappa index. Results: Maxent most accurately predicted the habitat distribution of B. balearica, followed by MARS models. The other models tested yielded lower accuracy values. A comparison of the predictive power of the models revealed that climate variables made the highest contributions among the environmental variables studied. The variables that made the lowest contributions were the insolation models. To examine the sensitivity of the models to a reduction in the number of variables, a test showed that accuracy of over 0.90 was maintained by applying just three climatic variables (spring rainfall, mean temperature of the warmest month, and mean temperature of the coldest month). Maps derived from the algorithms of all models tested coincided well with the known distribution of the species. Conclusions: Model habitat prediction is a preliminary step towards highlighting areas of high habitat suitability of B. balearica. These data support the results of previous research, which show that MaxEnt is the best technique for modelling species distributions with small sample sizes.  相似文献

The insertion of managed care into Medicaid services for the mentally ill has created contention about clinical decision making. At the center of this debate is the matter of what constitutes a medical necessity. Employing ethnographic methodology, this study examines utilization review (UR), the context in which decisions concerning the authorization of mental health care services are made. Interviews carried out in the study contrast ideological underpinnings of providers and advocates of the mentally ill, on the one hand, with employees and administrators of managed care institutions, on the other. The result is an exploration into the ways discourses surrounding the mental health care needs of New Mexico's Medicaid population are being constructed and are determining the actual care they receive.  相似文献

With debate escalating in regard to the prolonged contemporaneity of neandertal and modern human groups in the Franco-Cantabrian region on the one hand, and the late persistence of neandertals (until ca. 28-30,000 B.P.) and Mousterian industries in southern Iberia on the other; sites with Mousterian-Upper Paleolithic sequences from northern Spain play a pivotal role in the ongoing investigation of the Middle-Upper Paleolithic transition in western Europe. An important line of inquiry into the nature of social and economic change from the Middle to Upper Paleolithic is the monitoring of shifts in land use and resource procurement patterns. The recognition of short-term, seasonal patterning in settlement and resource provisioning may provide insights into changes in mobility, territoriality, and social organization that might otherwise be missed. This paper presents results of a seasonality study of fauna from archaeological levels spanning the Middle-Upper Paleolithic transition from the sites of El Castillo, El Pendo, and Cueva Morín in Cantabrian Spain. Data concerning season of death and age at death of prey animals presented here are derived from dental growth mark (increment, annuli) analysis. These data, along with other artifactual and faunal evidence suggest to us that: (1) economic strategies and technologies pervasive in the Upper Paleolithic are rooted in the Cantabrian Middle Paleolithic; and, (2) the apparent increase in deposits from the Middle through Upper Paleolithic may be the signature of a gradual increase in logistical economic strategies including the heightened level of social organization required for their implementation.  相似文献
